Abstract
The 70% aqueous acetone extracts of ten Taiwanese native plants were evaluated by various antioxidant assays, including 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), hydroxyl (.OH) radicals, and reducing power assay. In the present study, extracts of Acer buerferianum var. formosanum, Cleyera japonica var. morii, Cyclobalanopsis stenophylla var. stenophylloides, and Machilus zuihoensis exhibited stronger activity against DPPH radicals, and their IC50 values ranged from 5.4 to 8.3 microg/ml. The ten selected extracts effectively inhibited the formation of .OH generated in the Fenton reaction system. Among the extracts whose reducing power activities were determined, A. buerferianum var. formosanum, C. japonica var. morii, C. stenophylla var. stenophylloides, Eriobotrya deflex, and M. zuihoensis showed high activity. The results indicate the 70% aqueous acetone extracts of A. buerferianum var. formosanum, C. japonica var. morii, C. stenophylla var. stenophylloides, and M. zuihoensis with great potency in these assay systems and may be candidates for the development of natural antioxidants.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Ternstroemia pringlei represents one of the most widely employed and commercially exploited medicinal plant in Mexico, used popularly as a tranquilizer and for the treatment of insomnia. AIM OF THE STUDY To investigate the sedative constituents of the plant through a bio-guided fractionation of extracts derived from calyx and fruits. MATERIALS AND METHODS Crude extracts with different polarities (CHCl(3), AcOEt, MeOH, aqueous) were prepared and subjected to chromatographic fractionation, leading to the isolation of the sedative compound (1) from the MeOH crude extract. The identity of 1 was unequivocally established by means of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analysis. The sleeping time induced by sodium pentobarbital and the elevated plus-maze models were performed on mice to determine the sedative and anxiolytic activities, respectively. Bioactivity was also investigated though in vitro GABA release experiments using mice brain slices. RESULTS The sedative compound was established as jacaranone (1), and its effect was clearly demonstrated through a dose-dependent response analysis (ED(50) = 25 mg/kg mouse weight). When tested in the elevated plus-maze model, none of the extracts from Ternstroemia pringlei displayed anxiolytic activity. GABA release experiments showed that the MeOH and aqueous crude extracts released this neurotransmitter at a ratio of 217 and 179 pmol/g protein, respectively, evidencing the presence of other bioactive constituents in the extracts apart of 1, whose activity was absent in this model. CONCLUSIONS Although 1 has been isolated and identified in a number of plant species, this is the first time that its sedative effect has been demonstrated. No previous record exists of other sedative compounds having been isolated from Ternstroemia pringlei.

Abstract
CONTEXT Ternstroemia gymnanthera Sprague (Theaceae) possesses various known pharmacological properties. However, its anti-inflammatory activity has not been reported. OBJECTIVE The anti-inflammatory activity of Ternstroemia gymnanthera stem bark aqueous extract (TGSBE) was evaluated using LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cytotoxicity was assessed by MTT assay after 24 h with TGSBE (25-200 μg/mL). Further testing used TGSBE at 100 and 200 μg/mL. Griess and ELISA methods after 24 h with TGSBE determined NO and cytokine levels, respectively; then, mRNA levels (iNOS & cytokines) were analyzed by Quantitative-PCR after 12 h. NF-κB and MAPK were assessed by immunoblotting after TGSBE treatment for 12 h, followed by LPS for 30 min. Immunofluorescence assay was also performed for NF-κB. ROS and MMP, after 12 h with TGSBE, were determined by flow cytometry. The antioxidant potential of TGSBE was analyzed by ABTS assay. The Folin-Ciocalteu method determined the total phenolic content of TGSBE. LPS concentration was 0.5 μg/mL. RESULTS TGSBE at 200 μg/mL showed about 96.2% viability while suppressing the production of NO (88.99%), TNFα (24.38%), IL-6 (61.70%) and IL-1β (55.12%) and gene expression by 67.88, 45.24, 65.84, and 70.48%, respectively. TGSBE decreased ROS (79.26%) and improved MMP (48.01%); it inhibited translocation of NF-κB and MAPK activation. Radical scavenging activity was 50% at 402.17 μg/mL (ascorbic acid standard: 88.8 μg/mL). Total phenolic content was 240.9 mg GAE/g. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION TGSBE suppresses the inflammatory response by inhibiting the NF-κB and MAPK cascades exhibiting therapeutic potential to treat inflammatory diseases associated with increased activation of macrophages.

Abstract
CONTEXT Fruits of Ternstroemia sylvatica Schltdl. and Cham. (Theaceae) are used in Mexican traditional medicine to alleviate anxiety, sleep disorders and seizures; however, the active principles have not been identified. OBJECTIVE To identify the neuroactive principles of T. sylvatica fruits using neuropharmacological tests on mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS The methanol and aqueous extracts of pericarp or seeds of T. sylvatica fruits were intraperitoneally administered (1-562 mg/kg, single doses) to mice. The exploratory cylinder, hole board, open field, Rota-rod and sodium pentobarbital-induced hypnosis tests were used to evaluate the CNS depressant effect after 30 min single administration of extracts. From aqueous seeds extract, triterpene glycoside 28-O-[β-l-6-rhamnopyranosyl]-R1-barrigenol was isolated an active compound. RESULTS Crude extracts of T. sylvatica fruits, separated from seed and pericarp, showed sedative effect in mice. The aqueous (ED50 = 4.9 ± 0.8 mg/kg) seed extracts is the most active among them. This extract also decrease locomotor activity and disrupt motor coordination of mice. This extract was also the most toxic extract (LD50 = 5.0 ± 1.4 mg/kg; i.p.). The triterpene glycoside 28-O-[β-l-6-rhamnopyranosyl]-R1-barrigenol was identified in this extract as one of the active sedative compounds (ED50 = 0.12 ± 0.01 mg/kg) also with toxic effect (LD50 = 1.11 ± 0.23 mg/kg). CONCLUSION The results suggest that T. sylvatica fruits has toxic activity rather than CNS depressant activity in mice and that this effect might be related to the presence of 28-O-[β-l-6-rhamnopyranosyl]-R1-barrigenol, one of the active principles of T. sylvatica fruits with sedative and toxic effect.

Abstract
Emission of particulate matter (PM) during forest fires is a major source of air pollution and hence purification of atmospheric pollution has gained increasing importance. Trees can absorb polluting gases and fine particles by their leaves from the atmosphere and act as a sustainable air purification filter. However, the capture efficiency varies among tree species; thus exploring the ability of forest trees to capture smoke PM released during forest fires provides a basis for assessing net emissions from forest fires and the impact of smoke on forest ecosystems. In this study, the main afforestation tree species, Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook, and a fire-resistant tree species, Schima superba Gardn.et Champ, in southern China were exposed to different smoke concentrations by simulating forest fire. The amount of PM per unit leaf area, absorption of nutrient element, leaf surface characteristics and antioxidant enzyme activities were determined. The main findings were: (1) The total quantity of PM captured by unit leaf area (μg·cm-2) of C. lanceolata was 28.25 ± 1.12, 30.52 ± 3.43 and 33.14 ± 3.00 in low, intermediate and high smoke concentrations, respectively. The corresponding values for S. superba was 5.96 ± 0.56, 10.09 ± 1.13 and 12.27 ± 0.39, respectively. (2) Both species had weak absorption capacity for inorganic ions in the PM. (3) The purification of smoke PM by leaves was mainly related to leaf surface roughness, where it was higher for C. lanceolata than S. superba leaves. (4) Smoke treatment positively affected the contents of chlorophyll and soluble protein as well as increased antioxidant enzyme activities. In conclusion, the findings highlight the importance of leaf structural characteristics in capturing smoke particles and C. lanceolata is better suited for purification of atmospheric smoke particles following forest fire than S. superba.

Abstract
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) was leached from leaves of two trees commonly grown in subtropical regions, Pinus elliottii (commonly known as slash pine) and Schima superba (S. superba), and its degradation pattern and potential for forming disinfection byproducts (DBPs) were evaluated. The leaves were exposed in the field for up to one year before leaching. The DOM leached from slash pine litter contained on average 10.4 mg of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) per gram of dry weight; for S. superba the average was 37.2 mg-DOC/g-dry weight. Ultraviolet and visible light absorbance, fluorescence, and molecular weight analysis indicated that more aromatic/humic and higher molecular weight compounds are formed as leaf litter ages. A 4-component parallel factor analysis of the fluorescence data showed that the intensity of peaks related with protein-like components decreased gradually during biodegradation, while that of peaks attributed to humic-acid-like components increased continuously. Fresh slash pine leachates formed on average 40.0 μg of trihalomethane (THM) per milligram of DOC, while S. superba leachates formed 45.6 μg. THM formation showed peak values of 55.7 μg/mg DOC for slash pine and 74.9 μg/mg DOC for S. superba after 8 months of aging. The formation of haloacetonitrile (HAN) and trichloronitromethane (TCNM) increased with increasing leaf age, while chloral hydrate (CH) formation did not show such a trend. Specific UV absorbance showed some positive correlation with DBPs, but humic-acid-like and protein-like absorbance peaks correlated with CH and TCNM yields in only some leaf samples.

Abstract
Gene tree discordance is a significant legacy of biological evolution. Multiple factors can result in incongruence among genes, such as introgression, incomplete lineage sorting (ILS), gene duplication or loss. Resolving the background of gene tree discordance is a critical way to uncover the process of species diversification. Camellia, the largest genus in Theaceae, has controversial taxonomy and systematics due in part to a complex evolutionary history. We used 60 transcriptomes of 55 species, which represented 15 sections of Camellia to investigate its phylogeny and the possible causes of gene tree discordance. We conducted gene tree discordance analysis based on 1,617 orthologous low-copy nuclear genes, primarily using coalescent species trees and polytomy tests to distinguish hard and soft conflict. A selective pressure analysis was also performed to assess the impact of selection on phylogenetic topology reconstruction. Our results detected different levels of gene tree discordance in the backbone of Camellia, and recovered rapid diversification as one of the possible causes of gene tree discordance. Furthermore, we confirmed that none of the currently proposed sections of Camellia was monophyletic. Comparisons among datasets partitioned under different selective pressure regimes showed that integrating all orthologous genes provided the best phylogenetic resolution of the species tree of Camellia. The findings of this study reveal rapid diversification as a major source of gene tree discordance in Camellia and will facilitate future investigation of reticulate relationships at the species level in this important plant genus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hybridization is generally considered an important creative evolutionary force, yet this evolutionary process is still poorly characterized in karst plants. In this study, we focus on natural hybridization in yellow Camellia species, a group of habitat specialists confined to karst/non-karst habitats in southwestern China. RESULTS Based on population genome data obtain from double digest restriction-site associated DNA (ddRAD) sequencing, we found evidence for natural hybridization and introgression between C. micrantha and C. flavida, and specifically confirmed their hybrid population, C. "ptilosperma". Ecophysiological results suggested that extreme hydraulic traits were fixed in C. "ptilosperma", these being consistent with its distinct ecological niche, which lies outside its parental ranges. CONCLUSION The identified hybridization event is expected to have played a role in generating novel variation during, in which the hybrid population displays different phenological characteristics and novel ecophysiological traits associated with the colonization of a new niche in limestone karst.

Abstract
Based on the field investigation and the data combination from literature, vegetation carbon storage, carbon density, and their spatial distribution were examined across six forest community types (Schima superba--Castanopsis fargesii community, S. superba--C. fargesii with C. sclerophylla community, S. superba--C. fargesii with Distylium myricoides community, Illicium lanceolatum--Choerospondias axillaris community, Liquidambar formosana--Pinus massoniana community and Hedyotis auricularia--Phylostachys pubescens community) in Tiantong National Forest Park, Zhejiang Province, by using the allometric biomass models for trees and shrubs. Results showed that: Among the six communities investigated, carbon storage and carbon density were highest in the S. superba--C. fargesii with C. sclerophylla community (storage: 12113.92 Mg C; density: 165.03 Mg C · hm(-2)), but lowest in the I. lanceolatum--C. axillaris community (storage: 680.95 Mg C; density: 101.26 Mg C · hm(-2)). Carbon storage was significantly higher in evergreen trees than in deciduous trees across six communities. Carbon density ranged from 76.08 to 144.95 Mg C · hm(-2), and from 0. 16 to 20. 62 Mg C · hm(-2) for evergreen trees and deciduous trees, respectively. Carbon storage was highest in stems among tree tissues in the tree layer throughout communities. Among vegetation types, evergreen broad-leaved forest had the highest carbon storage (23092.39 Mg C), accounting for 81.7% of the total carbon storage in all forest types, with a car- bon density of 126.17 Mg C · hm(-2). Total carbon storage for all vegetation types in Tiantong National Forest Park was 28254.22 Mg C, and the carbon density was 96.73 Mg C · hm(-2).

Abstract
The effects of fertilizers and water content on N2O emission were studied using the three most typical plantation soils. Soil incubations were performed and fertilization and water content treatments were designed. At 25% of saturated water content(SWC), N2O emissions from the soil treated with urea, KNO3, (NH4)2 SO4 and KH2 PO4 were compared at application rates of 0, 100, 200, 300 and 500 kg/hm2. At 80% of SWC, similar experiments were carried out but at only one application rate(500 kg/hm2). N2O emissions at various water contents(20%, 35%, 50%, 65%, 80% and 100% of SWC) were studied. At low water content(25% of SWC), neither nitrogen nor phosphorus(or potassium) fertilizers led to a high level of N2O emission, which generally ranged from 2.03 to 29.02 microg/(m2 x h). However, at high water content(80% SWC), the fertilizers resulted in much greater N2O emission irregardless of soil tested. The highest N2O emission rates after 24 h of water addition were 1233 microg/(m2 x h) for S. superba soil, 1507 microg/(m2 x h) for P. elliottii soil and 1869 microg/ (m2 x h) for A. mangium soil respectively. N2O emission from soils treated with urea, (NH4)2 SO4 and KH2 PO4 immediately dropped to a low level but steadily increased to a very high level for the soil treated with KNO3. High NO3- content was a basis of high level of N2O emission. N2O emission rates from soils peaked shortly after flooding, rapidly dropping to a very low level in soil from non-legume plantations, but lasting for a relatively long period in soil from legume plantations. When soil water content increased equaling to or higher than 65%, the accumulated N2O emission over a period of 13 d ranged from 20.21-29.78 mg/m2 for S. superba, 30.57-70.12 mg/m2 for P. elliottii and 300.89-430.51 mg/m2 for A. mangium. The critical water content was 50% of SWC, above which a high level of N2O emission could be expected, and below which very little N2O emissions were detected. The results suggest that, at low water content (< 50% of SWC), the fertilization practice is safe with regard to N2O emissions, but at high water content (> 50% of SWC), nitrogen fertilizer in the form of nitrate could yield a 100-fold increase in N2O emissions. Legume plantations like A. mangium should be avoided in low lands which could easily suffer from flooding or poor drainage.

Abstract
Three acylated saponins and three flavonoid glycosides, along with nine known flavonoids, were isolated from the fruits of Stewartia koreana Nakai ex Rehder (Theaceae) using relative mass defect filtering analysis. The structures of these compounds were determined by performing spectroscopic analyses and using chemical methods. Furthermore, all the isolates were evaluated for their effects on the mRNA expression of the genes for proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) and low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) as well as their inhibitory activities on PCSK9 and LDLR binding. None of the isolates was deemed to be active in PCSK9-LDLR binding inhibition. However, (+)-catechin was found to inhibit PCSK9 expression and increase LDLR expression, suggesting the potential of (+)-catechin to lower cholesterol level via the downregulation of PCSK9 expression.

Abstract
Phitopreparation tiol is offered (5% fatty solution of Tea Leaf lipid complex) as a medicine. To determine gastroprotective effect of tiol generally accepted models of acute gastric ulcer were used: bitadion, atopanove and reserprinove stomach damages. An experiment was conducted on half-matured white mice weighting 140-160 g., which fast 24 hours before the experiment (only water was freely given to them). Animals were killed by immediate decapitation under light ether narcosis. Their stomachs were dissected along greater curvature of stomach and number of injuries were counted. The injuries were subdivided into hemorrhage, erosion and ulcer. Paul's "ulcer index" was calculated for any kind of damage. Each group consisted of 5 mice. Distilled water was used as control and aekol - to collate the gastroprotective effect. Results of the experiment showed that gastroprotective effect of tiol is greater than that of aekol's.

Abstract
In order to understand the interspecific and ecological relationships of Michelia odora (extremely small population) community and strengthen the protection of wild M. odora resources in Junzifeng Nature Reserve, we studied the niche characteristics and interspecific associations of dominant tree species. The results showed that M. odora, Machilus chekiangensis, Schima superba, and Alniphyllum fortunei had obvious niche breadth advantages, which were the constructive species of the community. Among the 190 groups of species pairs among the 20 dominant tree species, 50.5% of species pairs had niche overlap value greater than 0.5. The degree of ecological niche differentiation among species was general. M. odora had large niche overlap with other 19 species, indicating a competitive risk when resources were insufficient. The overall associations of dominant tree species were significantly positive, indicating the community was at the late stage of relatively stable succession. The results ofχ2 test, asso-ciation coefficient, and Pearson correlation coefficient showed that all the significance ratios of interspecific association were lower, and that the independence among species was relatively strong. There was a positive correlation between interspecific association and niche overlap. The M. odora community was relatively mature, with full utilization of resources and stable interspecific relationship. To promote the rejuvenation and create a good habitat of M. odora population, the population size with large overlap with M. odora niche and significant negative association could be appropriately limited, while that with positive interaction could be increased.

Abstract
Global changes caused by the increases of atmospheric CO2 concentration and temperature have important effects on soil biogeochemical processes. The synthesis and release of volatile halogenated organic compounds (VOXs) is an important pathway for soil to participate in the global material cycle and energy flow. In this study, Schima superba and Cunninghamia lanceolata seedlings in the southern subtropics were selected as the research objects. Four treatments, including control (CK), elevated CO2 concentration (EC), elevated temperature (ET) and elevated both factors (EC+ET) were set up. The effects of EC and ET on soil VOXs formation were studied by an open-top chamber system coupled with a purging and trapping gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The results showed that VOXs content in the soil of S. superba seedlings was 0.065-0.252 ng·g-1, which was higher than that of C. lanceolata (0.038-0.136 ng·g-1). At the EC, ET and EC+ET treatments, VOXs contents were reduced in soils of both species. The effect of ET was the most significant, with the decrease rates of 74.2% and 72.1% in both soils, respectively. The change of VOXs content with increasing temperature mainly attributed to the changes of soil moisture and nitrogen content. The content of VOXs in the soils of S. superba seedlings decreased more than that of C. lanceolata under different treatments. In CK, EC, ET and EC+ET treatment, bromodichloromethane (BDCM) (27.5%, 36.7%, 32.9%, 32.6%) and tetrachloromethane (TCM) (9.0%, 16.8%, 22.7%, 15.8%) were the main VOXs in the soil of S. superba seedlings, respectively, while BDCM and dibromomethane (DBM) were the main VOXs in the soil of C. lanceolata seedlings. BDCM accounted for 31.9%, 38.2%, 40.9% and 37.2% of the VOXs content in each treatment, and DBM accounted for 17.9%, 16.5%, 19.2% and 16.0% of the VOXs content, respectively. Simulating elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration and temperature was conducive to more comprehensive reflection of the ecological effect of global climate change, and it could provide data support for improving the VOCs flux model.

Abstract
We analyzed the variation patterns of growth and wood properties of 24 different provenances of 18-year-old Schima superba in Jian'ou, Fujian Province. A total of 11 growth and wood indices were measured, including tree height, diameter at breast height, wood basic density and anatomical structure. We analyzed the geographical variation patterns of growth and wood properties, and the provenance areas were divided. Further, the excellent timber provenances were selected according to different uses. The results showed that the variation of growth traits, which was 17.6%-27.3% with mean value of 22.4%, was larger than that of wood properties (7.0%-21.0%, mean 12.7%). Growth properties and some wood properties (fiber length, fiber lumen diameter and fiber cell wall thickness) had significant differences among provenances. Growth traits were not correlated with fiber traits, and they could be selected independently without emphasis on other traits. There was significant correlation between the longitudinal and radial growth indicators of wood properties, but they were not correlated with the wood basic density, which could be selected independently. In addition, the growth and wood properties were significantly influenced by temperature and precipitation, which showed a latitudinal variation pattern. According to Q-type clustering analysis, 24 provenances could be divided into four categories, of which southern provenances from distribution area of S. superba had vigorous growth and supper wood properties. They had smaller microfibril angle, higher maturity, longer fiber length, and thicker fiber cell wall. Finally, five excellent provenances were selected according to pulpwood and building use.

Abstract
Herbivore leaf consumption of various mangrove species in relation to environmental factors and leaf hardness were studied in the Dagua river estuary, Colombia. Leaf consumption and damage were assessed by measuring the percentage of area attacked by herbivores, distinguishing between consumption and damage. The species that suffered the highest consumption, such as Avicennia germinans (Avicenniaceae) and Laguncularia racemosa (Combretaceae), had softer leaves and less herbivore species when compared with Rhizophora spp. (Rhizophoraceae) and Pelliciera rhizophorae (Theaceae). The abundance and diversity of leaf grazing and its variability among mangrove species in the Dagua River estuary, show the importance of the trophic dynamics of live vegetable matter, in spite of their relatively low contribution to removing organic matter.

Abstract
Leaf litters of Pinus elliottii (needle-leaved) and Schima superba (broad-leaved), which are commonly found in subtropical regions of South China, were decomposed in a field for 0, 30, 60, 90, 150, 210, 240 and 365 d to evaluate changes in concentrations, compositions and properties, and amount of dissolved organic matter (DOM) released and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in soil. Although the concentrations of DOM derived from S. superba were higher than those from P. elliottii, similar variation patterns of DOM characteristics (e.g., concentrations, composition and properties) were observed between the two types of litter during decomposition. The concentrations of DOM showed a downward trend. Upward trends were obtained for the aromatization and molecular mass of DOM, as well as fulvic acid and humic acid levels in DOM, while a downward trend was found for levels of simple aromatic proteins, such as tyrosine, in DOM. During the initial phase of decomposition, DOM was generally composed of hydrophilic neutral and acidic components, which were easily decomposed and transferred, and their effects on surface soil DOC were not significant. At later stages, DOM was mainly composed of humic and fulvic acid and other aromatic, complex structure substances, which could easily adsorb on soil, and decreased the DOC concentration of surface soil.
