Abstract
PURPOSE The role of uveitis, an uncommon ocular disease, is often neglected in research and treatment of autoimmune conditions. The study described the spectrum of uveitis at a referral center in North Italy, and compared that to a previously published series of patients. METHODS We reviewed all patients with uveitis diagnosed from 2013 to 2015 at the Immunology Eye Unit, Arcispedale S. M. Nuova-IRCCS, Reggio Emilia, Italy. We examined patient characteristics, disease spectrum, and etiologies. RESULTS In total, 990 cases of uveitis were identified, who were mostly female (59%) with a median age at presentation of 44 years (interquartile range = 29-57). Anterior uveitis was most frequent (53.5%), followed by panuveitis (22.8%), posterior (16.2%), and intermediate uveitis (5.5%). Anterior herpetic uveitis (15.6%), Fuchs uveitis (9.7%), and HLA-B27 positive anterior uveitis (7.7%) were the most common specific diagnoses. Compared with the previous series, we observed an increased incidence of uveitis, and a different pattern of diagnoses. Rates of herpetic, HLA-B27 positive uveitis, and presumed ocular tuberculosis were higher, but Fuchs uveitis was less frequent. CONCLUSIONS The pattern of uveitis appears to be changing, very likely due to population-level increases in infectious diseases, to the availability of new diagnostic tests and to the interdisciplinary approach used in patient diagnosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE To study the patterns of intermediate uveitis in the pediatric age group in a referral eye care center in South India. METHODS This is a study of twenty consecutive patients under 16 years of age with intermediate uveitis, conducted at a tertiary referral center. Numerous variables were assessed, including age and gender distribution, laboratory data, the presence of systemic diseases, onset and course of ocular inflammation, clinical features, their complications, therapeutic strategies with their outcomes, remission, final visual acuity (VA), and characteristics associated with poor visual outcome. RESULTS Bilateral involvement was observed in 80% of the patients. Remission was observed in five out of 7 patients (78%) with completed follow-up of 5 years. Final VA improved by at least two lines in 11 patients, remained stable in 6 patients, and worsened in 3 patients. The etiological diagnosis showed one patient with Bechet's disease, one with juvenile idiopathic arthritis, 1 with human leukocyte antigen B27 associated uveitis, 9 with laboratory proven tuberculosis, and 3 with sarcoidosis and 5 where it was idiopathic. The mean follow-up was 4.8 years (range 3-8 years). Cataract was the most frequent complication observed (40%). Glaucoma, choroidal neovascularization, and amblyopia accounted for worsening of vision in three patients. CONCLUSION Median time of development of complications is about 3 years based on our study. Intermediate uveitis of childhood might exhibit a self-limiting course after several years. Visual recovery is good in the majority, and visual loss is limited despite the high rate of ocular complications.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the characteristics of ocular toxocariasis (OT) presenting with intermediate uveitis in the Korean population.We studied intermediate uveitis patients using ocular and systemic evaluations and a Toxocara IgG serology test.Of 50 intermediate uveitis patients, 19 were seropositive for Toxocara IgG. Of the 19 OT patients, 4 presented with recurrence within 6 months and were significantly younger than nonrecurrence patients (P = 0.009). Thirteen patients had a history of eating raw cow liver.There were 14 males and 5 females in the OT group, and 11 males and 20 females in the non-OT group (P = 0.009). There was bilateral involvement in 7 out of 19 patients in the OT group, and 20 out of 31 patients in non-OT group (P = 0.033).Intermediate uveitis patients in OT were predominately male and had more unilateral presentation than non-OT patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the incidence of remission among patients with intermediate uveitis; to identify factors potentially predictive of remission. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study. METHODS Involved eyes of patients with primary noninfectious intermediate uveitis at 4 academic ocular inflammation subspecialty practices, followed sufficiently long to meet the remission outcome definition, were studied retrospectively by standardized chart review data. Remission of intermediate uveitis was defined as a lack of inflammatory activity at ≥2 visits spanning ≥90 days in the absence of any corticosteroid or immunosuppressant medications. Factors potentially predictive of intermediate uveitis remission were evaluated using survival analysis. RESULTS Among 849 eyes (of 510 patients) with intermediate uveitis followed over 1934 eye-years, the incidence of intermediate uveitis remission was 8.6/100 eye-years (95% confidence interval [CI], 7.4-10.1). Factors predictive of disease remission included prior pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) (hazard ratio [HR] [vs no PPV] = 2.39; 95% CI, 1.42-4.00), diagnosis of intermediate uveitis within the last year (HR [vs diagnosis >5 years ago] =3.82; 95% CI, 1.91-7.63), age ≥45 years (HR [vs age <45 years] = 1.79; 95% CI, 1.03-3.11), female sex (HR = 1.61; 95% CI, 1.04-2.49), and Hispanic race/ethnicity (HR [vs white race] = 2.81; 95% CI, 1.23-6.41). Presence/absence of a systemic inflammatory disease, laterality of uveitis, and smoking status were not associated with differential incidence. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that intermediate uveitis is a chronic disease with an overall low rate of remission. Recently diagnosed patients and older, female, and Hispanic patients were more likely to remit. With regard to management, pars plana vitrectomy was associated with increased probability of remission.

Abstract
Purpose The study aims to describe the characteristics and etiologic causes of intermediate uveitis (IU) patients seen by a tertiary eye center in Singapore over 8 years. Methods This was a retrospective analysis of the clinical records of consecutive new cases of IU that presented to the uveitis subspecialty clinic from 2004–2011 at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Data collected included demographics, clinical and laboratory findings. Diagnoses were based on standardized clinical history, ophthalmological examination and investigations. Results There were 66 new cases of IU, comprising 5.7% of 1168 new uveitis patients. The median age of diagnosis was 40 years (mean 39.4±15.9), with largest subgroup of the patients in the age group of 41–60 years (36.4%). The majority was Chinese (57.6%), followed by Asian Indians (18.2%) and Malays (16.7%). The ethnicity distribution was dissimilar to our ethnic distribution in Singapore (p<0.001) with an increased incidence of IU in the Asian Indian population. Most were idiopathic (59.1%) in etiology, followed by tuberculosis (TB) (15.2%). Ocular complications developed in 21 patients (31.8%), with cystoid macular edema (CME) being the commonest (28.8%). Severe vitritis occurred in 9.1% of patients, and was significantly associated with TB-associated IU (p<0.001). There was a downward trend for the incidence of the proportion of IU patients over the total uveitis patients (p = 0.021), with Spearman’s rho of −0.786. Conclusions Despite the downward trend, TB-associated IU was still of higher prevalence compared to less endemic areas, emphasizing the need for increased TB surveillance. A high index of suspicion for TB-associated IU is required in patients with severe vitritis. Comparisons with other countries revealed disparities in the IU etiologies, indicating possible geographical differences. Prevalence of known immune-mediated etiologies of IU is less compared to the western population. Our study also suggests a probable predisposition of the Singapore local Indian population for IU.

Abstract
Round 10-12% of all children who present with signs of uveitis suffer from intermediate uveitis. Compared to uveitis anterior in children, the association of intermediate uveitis to a systemic disease is much more complicated. Most cases of uveitis intermedia are idiopathic and show the signs of a pars planitis. Post-infectious and immunological causes are difficult to detect. In cases of uveitis in children, it is necessary to know the specific symptoms of possible underlying systemic diseases. On this basis, an adequate and specific diagnosis will most probably be successful. This paper presents the different causes of uveitis intermedia in childhood and compares the incidence of the disease in comparison with adults as far as this is mentioned in the literature.

Abstract
PURPOSE To review, with respect to etiology, the efficacy and complications of different immunosuppressants used in a steroid-sparing strategy for children with uveitis. PATIENTS AND METHODS Forty children with uveitis were observed during a 5-year period, from 1997 to 2002. After complete ocular and physical assessment, routine and specific laboratory investigations were conducted along with radiologic examination. All cases underwent local therapy. Systemic corticosteroids were necessary in 75% of cases. Pediatric staff determined the need for initial association or sequential relay with immunosuppressants, depending on the severity of the uveitis. A steroid-sparing strategy was developed. RESULTS The average age was 6.5 years (range, 3 months to 14 years), with a male-to-female ratio of 23 to 17. Uveitis was anterior in 55% of cases, intermediate in 2.5%, posterior in 42.5%, and bilateral in 62.5%. A positive etiology was found in 47.5% of cases, and articular symptoms were present in 25%. Overall, the improvement in visual acuity was 62.2%. Where corticotherapy was associated with azathioprine, a 61% improvement was achieved. Corticosteroid therapy associated with mycophenolate mofetil resulted in a 94% improvement. No complications were present in 42.5% of cases. Ocular complications were present in 57.5% of cases and systemic complications were present in 12.5% of cases, none being directly related to the use of steroids. CONCLUSION The association of systemic corticotherapy and immunosuppressants in pediatric relapsing or steroid-dependent uveitis allows good recovery of visual acuity, fewer complications, and a minimization of side effects, especially those related to systemic corticosteroids. It requires close collaboration between the ophthalmologist and a fully involved pediatrician.

Abstract
AIM To analyse the pattern of uveitis in a referral centre in Tunisia, North Africa. METHODS The study included 472 patients with uveitis examined at the Department of Ophthalmology of Monastir (Tunisia) from January 1992 to August 2003. All patients had a comprehensive ocular and systemic history, including an extensive review of medical systems. Complete ophthalmic examination was performed in all cases, including best-corrected Snellen visual acuity, slit-lamp examination, applanation tonometry, and dilated fundus examination with three-mirror lens. Standard diagnostic criteria were employed for all syndromes or entities of uveitis. RESULTS The mean age at onset of uveitis was 34 years. The male-to-female ratio was 1:1.1. Uveitis was unilateral in 282 patients (59.7%) and bilateral in 190 patients (40.3%). Anterior uveitis was most common (166 patients; 35.2%), followed by posterior uveitis (133 patients; 28.2%), panuveitis (100 patients; 21.2%), and intermediate uveitis (73 patients; 15.5%). A specific diagnosis was found in 306 patients (64.8%). The most common cause of anterior uveitis was herpetic uveitis (56 patients; 33.7%). Toxoplasmosis was the most frequent cause of posterior uveitis (51 patients; 38.3%). Intermediate uveitis was most commonly idiopathic (63 patients; 86.3%). Behçet's disease was the most common cause of panuveitis (36 patients; 36%), followed by Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease (15 patients; 15%). A total of 16 patients (3.4%) suffered from blindness, and 59 (12.5%) from uniocular blindness. CONCLUSIONS In a hospital population in Tunisia, the most common causes of uveitis were Behçet's disease, herpes simplex infection, toxoplasmosis, and VKH disease.

Abstract
PURPOSE To address the clinical pattern and characteristics of uveitis in a tertiary center for uveitis in China and compare the similarity and difference in the distribution of uveitis entities between China and other countries. METHODS A retrospective study was performed on the patients with uveitis referred to the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center from January 1996 to December 2003. The clinical data including category, etiology, gender, and the age of the patients at uveitis presentation were analyzed and compared with studies published previously from other countries. RESULTS There were 902 male and 850 female patients in our series. The mean age of these patients at uveitis presentation was 33.8 +/- 16.5 years. Anterior uveitis (800, 45.6%) was the most common anatomical entity, followed by panuveitis (727, 41.5%), posterior uveitis (119, 6.8%), and intermediate uveitis (106, 6.1%). Further classification with the etiology criteria revealed 16 entities in anterior uveitis, with idiopathic anterior uveitis being the most common entity (473, 27.0%). Twelve entities were identified in panuveitis, of which Behçet disease (289, 16.5%) and Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) syndrome (278, 15.9%) were the predominant ones. No specific entity was recognized in the intermediate uveitis group. Although a number of specific entities were identified in posterior uveitis, toxoplasmosis was noted in only two patients in this group. CONCLUSIONS Idiopathic anterior uveitis, Behçet disease, and VKH syndrome are the most common entities of uveitis in China. Ocular toxoplasmosis, ocular histoplasmosis, and birdshot retinochoroidopathy are less common or absent in China.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Intermediate uveitis affecting pars plana, peripheral retina and underlying choroid affects primarily healthy children and young adults. OBJECTIVE To study the components of intermediate uveitis at Nepal Eye Hospital in the year 2003 August to 2004 March. MATERIALS AND METHODS A prospective study was done in patients with intermediate uveitis visiting Nepal Eye Hospital. Sample size was 50. Specially designed proforma of intermediate uveitis was used to collect particulars of the patients, history, clinical examination findings, investigation reports, management protocols used and the final visual outcome. RESULTS Intermediate uveitis was seen more in 20 to 29 years age group (38%) and more prevalent in males (52%). Among the study population farmers constituted maximum proportion (36%) and Mongoloid origin was mostly affected (30%). High number of patients were from the central development region with highest proportion from Dhading district (34%). Anterior segment affection with keratic precipitates and anterior chamber cells were noted in 72% of involved eyes. Vitreous cells were noted in all affected eyes while 4% had vitreous snow banking and 3% had vitreous snow balls. Most of the patients (52%) received between topical steroid and posterior subtenon injection of Triamcinolone. Visual Acuity was improved in 52% of cases and remained static in 46%.while deteriorated in 2%. CONCLUSION Significantly high number of patients with intermediate uveitis has been reported from the central development region mainly from Dhading Kathmandu and Nuwakot districts People in their third decade were found to be commonly involved and Mongloid origin were more commonly affected Anterior chamber spill over was seen in higher percentage of patients than described in literature As the patients presented in milder forms visual acuity improved is of cases with the treatment protocol followed.

Abstract
PURPOSE To study the patterns of uveitis in various geographic regions. METHODS A systematic literature review was performed using the MEDLINE database, from 1966 to present. Studies that satisfied our described selection criteria were analyzed to provide a global perspective on uveitis. RESULTS Twenty-two studies, which were the best available representatives of Australia, North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, were included in the final analysis. The distribution of uveitis cases according to the anatomical site of inflammation in the various regions, and the causes and clinical disease associations of anterior, intermediate, posterior, and pan-uveitis were studied for each of the regions and a comparative analysis was performed. CONCLUSIONS There are similarities and distinct differences in the patterns of uveitis in the various geographic regions. Such patterns of uveitis are influenced by combinations of geographical, environmental, and genetic factors.

Abstract
Uveitis are a large group of inflammatory diseases involving the iris, the ciliary body and the uvea. Multiple causes can be responsible for ocular inflammation that can result either from infectious or autoimmune disease. The incidence varies from 14 to 28/100,000 habitants. According to the anatomical classification, about 30-60% (average 47%) are related to anterior uveitis. 6-30% average 21%) are posterior uveitis, 7-15% (average 12%) are intermediate uveitis and 7-69% (average 20%) are panuveitis. A specific diagnostic can be established in more than 70% in most series. The most frequently diagnosed entities are HLA-B27 related uveitis, acute anterior uveitis in herpes zoster disease, toxoplasmosis, sarcoidosis and pars planitis.

Abstract
Seroepidemiologic, clinical, and virologic studies were performed to determine whether human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I was closely associated with uveitis in two hospitals. One hospital was in an endemic area of the virus (Miyakonojo, Miyazaki) and the other hospital was in a less endemic area (Kurume). In the endemic area, the seroprevalence of the virus in patients with uveitis without defined causes (35.4%, 62 of 175 patients) was significantly higher than that in patients with nonuveitic ocular diseases (16.1%, 42 of 261 patients), or in patients with uveitis with defined causes (10.3%, eight of 78 patients). The seroprevalence in younger patients (20 to 49 years of age) with uveitis without defined causes in the area was 44.8% (30 of 67 patients), whereas it was only 9.3% (ten of 107 patients) in the other two groups. A similar observation was recorded even in the less endemic area (Kurume). Because the seroprevalence of the virus in the general population is known to be low in younger patients and to increase with age, these findings were interpreted to indicate that the association of human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I with uveitis was significant. Most patients, particularly those aged 20 through 49 years, had an intermediate uveitis characterized by a moderate inflammation in the vitreous body accompanied by an iritis and retinal vasculitis.
