The efficient solution to decline the greenhouses emission and enrich the bacterial community during pig manure composting: Regulating the particle size of cornstalk

In present study, four lengths of chopped cornstalks were amended with pig manure respectively for 100 days aerobic fermentation, which aimed to evaluate the impact of different length of agricultural solid wastes on gaseous emission and dominating bacterial community succession and connection. The result revealed that the maximum ammonia volatilization was observed in 5 cm of straw samples attributed to the prominent mineralization, which was opposite to the emission of CH4 and N2O. As for global warming potential, the minimum value was detected in 5 cm of straw samples, which decreased by 5.03-24.75% compared with other samples. Additionally, the strongest correlation and complexity of bacterial community could be detected in 5 cm of straw treatment, representing the most vigorous bacterial metabolic ability could be recorded by optimizing the microbial habitat. Therefore, in order to decline the greenhouse effect in livestock manure composting, the 5 cm of corn straw was recommended.

Sulfur-aided aerobic biostabilization of swine manure and sawdust mixture: Humification and carbon loss

To investigate how sulfur addition affects humification and carbon loss during swine manure (SM) biostabilisation, various proportions of sulfur, i.e., 0 (CK), 0.2%-0.8% (S1-S4) were added to SM in a 70-day pilot-scale test. Compared to CK (16.07%), sulfur addition resulted in the mineralization of 17.05%-24.27% of the total organic carbon. Sulfur addition also reduced CH4 emissions, which were 3.7%-29.3% lower than that of CK. The total global warming potential values were in the range of 913.1-968.2 g CO2 eq kg-1 for all treatments. Although the sulfur-added treatments showed lower HA/FA ratios than CK after 70 days, no significant impact on the maturity of the final products was observed. Sulfur addition impacted the microbial community, CH4, CO2, N2O emissions, and affected the variation of temperature in biowaste biostabilization. These discoveries provided an important basis for understanding the function of sulfur in regulating the aerobic bio-decomposition of organic waste.

A novel composting system for mitigating ammonia emissions and producing nitrogen-rich organic fertilizer

Ammonia emissions not only lead to environmental pollution but also reduce the quality of compost products. Here, a novel composting system (condensation return composting system, CRCS) was designed for mitigating ammonia emissions. The results showed that the CRCS reduced ammonia emissions by 59.3% and increased the total nitrogen content by 19.4% compared with the control. By integrating the results of nitrogen fraction conversion, ammonia-assimilating enzyme activity, and structural equation modeling, it was found that the CRCS facilitated the conversion of ammonia to organic nitrogen by stimulating ammonia-assimilating enzyme activity and ultimately retained nitrogen in the compost product. Moreover, the pot experiment confirmed that nitrogen-rich organic fertilizer produced by the CRCS significantly increased the fresh weight (45.0%), root length (49.2%), and chlorophyll content (11.7%) of pakchoi. This study provides a promising strategy for mitigating ammonia emissions and producing nitrogen-rich organic fertilizer with high agronomic value.

Influence of biochar on succession of fungal communities during food waste composting

This study aims to examine the effects of biochar on fungal dynamics during food waste composting. The different dosage of wheat straw biochar from 0 to 15% (0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 10%, and 15%) were used as an additive to composting and examined for 42 days. The results showed that Ascomycota (94.64%) and Basidiomycota (5.36%) were the most dominant phyla. The most common fungal genera were Kluyveromyces (3.76%), Candida (5.34%), Trichoderma (2.30%), Fusarium (0.46%), Mycothermus-thermophilus (5.67%), Trametes (0.46%), and Trichosporon (3.38%). The average number of operational taxonomic units were 469, with the greatest abundance seen in the 7.5% and 10% treatments. Redundancy analysis revealed that different concentrations of biochar applied treatments have significantly distinct fungal communities. Additionally, correlation analyses of fungal interactions with environmental elements, performed through a heatmap, also indicate a distinct difference among the treatments. The study clearly demonstrates that 15% of biochar has a positive impact on fungal diversity and improves the food waste composting.

Biochar as functional amendment for antibiotic resistant microbial community survival during hen manure composting

The study aim was to reveal the mechanism of impact of two type biochar on composting of hen manure (HM) and wheat straw (WS). Biochar derived from coconut shell and bamboo used as additives to reduce antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) in HM compost. The results manifested that effect of biochar amendment was significant to reduce ARB in HM composting. Compared with control, the microbial activity and abundance were increased in both biochar applied treatment, and bacterial community was changed. Additionally, network analysis revealed that biochar amendment increased the quantity of microorganisms related to organic matter degrading. Among them, coconut shell biochar (CSB) played a pioneering role to mitigate ARB to better exert its effects. Structural correlation analysis showed that CSB reduce ARB mobility and promote organic matter degradation via improving beneficial bacterial community structure. Overall, composting with participation of biochar amendment stimulated antibiotic resistance bacterial dynamics. These results evidence practical value for scientific research and lay the foundation for agricultural promotion of composting.

Microbial dynamics and nitrogen retention during sheep manure composting employing peach shell biochar

In this study, the effects of peach shell biochar (PSB) and microbial agent (EM) amendment on nitrogen conservation and bacterial dynamics during sheep manure (SM) composting were examined. Six treatments were performed including T1 (control with no addition), T2 (EM), T3 (EM + 2.5 %PSB), T4 (EM + 5 %PSB), T5 (EM + 7.5 %PSB), and T6 (EM + 10 %PSB). The results showed that the additives amendment reduced NH3 emissions by 6.12%∼32.88% and N2O emissions by 10.96%∼19.76%, while increased total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) content by 8.15-9.13 g/kg. Meanwhile, Firmicutes were the dominant flora in the thermophilic stages, while Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, and Bacteroidota were the dominant flora in the maturation stages. The abundance of Bacteroidota and Actinobacteriota were increased by 17.49%∼32.51% and 2.31%∼12.60%, respectively, which can accelerate the degradable organic materials decomposition. Additionally, redundancy analysis showed that Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, and Bacteroidota were positively correlated with NO3--N, TKN, and N2O, but a negative correlation with NH3 and NH4+-N. Finally, results confirmed that (EM + 10 %PSB) additives were more effective to reduce nitrogen loss and improve bacterial dynamics.

Evaluation of fungal dynamics during sheep manure composting employing peach shell biochar

In this study, explored the influence of different proportion (0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%) peach shell biochar (PSB) with microbial agents (EM) on the carbon transformation, humification process and fungal community dynamics during sheep manure (SM) composting. And no additives were used as control. The results manifested that the CO2 and CH4 emissions were effectively reduced 8.23%∼13.10% and 17.92%∼33.71%. The degradation rate of fulvic acid increased by 17.12%∼23.08% and the humic acid contents were enhanced by 27.27%∼33.97% so that accelerated the composting. Besides, the dominant fungal phylum was Ascomycota (31.43%∼52.54%), Basidiomycota (3.12%∼13.85%), Mucoromycota (0.40%∼7.61%) and Mortierellomycota (0.97%∼2.39%). Pearson correlation analysis and network indicated that there were different correlations between physicochemical indexes and fungal community under different additive concentrations. In brief, the two modifiers application promoted the SM degradation and affected the fungal community structure.

Mechanisms and effects of novel ammonifying microorganisms on nitrogen ammonification in cow manure waste composting

It is essential to reduce nitrogen losses and to improve nitrogen conversion during organic waste composting because of environmental protection and sustainable development. To reveal newly domesticated ammonifying microorganisms (AM) cultures on the ammonification and nitrogen conversion during the composting, the screened microbial agents were inoculated at 5 % concentration (in weight basis) into cow manure compost under five different treatments: sterilized distilled water (Control), Amm-1 (mesophilic fungus-F1), Amm-2 (mesophilic bacterium-Z1), Amm-3 (thermotolerant bacterium-Z2), and Amm-4 (consortium: F1, Z1, and Z2), and composted for 42 days. Compared to control, AM inoculation prolonged the thermophilic phases to 9-19 days, increased the content of NH4+-N to 1.60-1.96 g/kg in the thermophilic phase, reduced N2O and NH3 emissions by 22.85-61.13 % and 8.45-23.29 %, increased total Kjeldahl nitrogen, and improved cell count and viability by 12.09-71.33 % and 66.71-72.91 %. AM was significantly associated with different nitrogen and microbial compositions. The structural equation model (SEM) reveals NH4+-N is the preferable nitrogen for the majority of bacterial and fungal growth and that AM is closely associated with the conversion between NH3 and NH4+-N. Among the treatments, inoculation with Amm-4 was more effective, as it significantly enhanced the driving effect of the critical microbial composition on nitrogen conversion and accelerated nitrogen ammonification and sequestration. This study provided new concepts for the dynamics of microbial in the ammonification process of new AM bacterial agents in cow manure compost, and an understanding of the ecological mechanism underlying the ammonification process and its contribution to nitrogen (N) cycling from the perspective of microbial communities.

A critical review on valorization of food processing wastes and by-products for pullulan production

Pullulan is a commercially available exopolymer biosynthesized by Aureobasidium pullulans supplemented with nitrogen, carbon and other vital components through submerged and solid-state fermentation. These nutrients are very expensive and it raises the cost for the production of pullulan. Hence, the need of alternative cost-effective raw materials for its production is a prerequisite. Owing to its unique physicochemical features, pullulan has various applications in the food, pharmacological, and biomedical domains. Food industrial wastes generate a considerable number of by-products which accumulates and has a negative influence on the environment. These by-products are made up of proteins, carbohydrates, and other components, can be employed as substrates for the production of pullulan. The present review briefs on the pullulan production using food processing waste and by-products and the elements that impact it. It provides an insight into versatile applications of pullulan in food industries. Various challenges and future prospects in the field of research on pullulan production have been uncovered.

Biochar-amended compost as a promising soil amendment for enhancing plant productivity: A meta-analysis study

A meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the effect of biochar-amended compost (BAC) on plant productivity (PP) and soil quality. The analysis was based on observations from 47 peer-reviewed publications. The results showed that BAC application significantly increased PP by 74.9 %, the total nitrogen content of soil by 37.6 %, and the organic matter content of soil by 98.6 %. Additionally, BAC application significantly decreased the bioavailability of cadmium (-58.3 %), lead (-50.1 %), and zinc (-87.3 %). However, the bioavailability of copper increased by 30.1 %. The study explored the key factors regulating the response of PP to BAC through subgroup analysis. It was found that the increase in the organic matter content of the soil was the key mechanism for PP improvement. The recommended rate of BAC application for improving PP was found to be between 10 and 20 t ha^-1. Overall, the findings of this study are significant in providing data support and technical guidance for the application of BAC in agricultural production. However, the high heterogeneity of BAC application conditions, soil properties, and plant types suggests that site-specific factors should be considered when applying BAC to soils.

Biochar preparation and evaluation of its effect in composting mechanism: A review

This article provides an overview of biochar application for organic waste co-composting and its biochemical transformation mechanism. As a composting amendment, biochar work in the adsorption of nutrients, the retention of oxygen and water, and the promotion of electron transfer. These functions serve the micro-organisms (physical support of niche) and determine changes in community structure beyond the succession of composing primary microorganisms. Biochar mediates resistance genes, mobile gene elements, and biochemical metabolic activities of organic matter degrading. The participation of biochar enriched the α-diversity of microbial communities at all stages of composting, and ultimately reflects the high γ-diversity. Finally, easy and convincing biochar preparation methods and characteristic need to be explored, in turn, the mechanism of biochar on composting microbes at the microscopic level can be studied in depth.

Effects of magnesite on nitrogen conversion and bacterial community during pig manure composting

The objective of this research was to elucidate the effect of varying proportions of magnesite (MS) addition - 0% (T1), 2.5% (T2), 5% (T3), 7.5% (T4), and 10% (T5) - on nitrogen transformation and bacterial community dynamics during pig manure composting. In comparison to T1 (control), MS treatments amplified the abundance of Firmicutes, Actinobacteriota, and Halanaerobiaeota, bolstered the metabolic functionality of associated microorganisms, and enhanced the nitrogenous substance metabolic pathway. A complementary effect in core bacillus species played a key role in nitrogen preservation. Compared to T1, 10% MS demonstrated the most substantial influence on composting because Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen increased by 58.31% and NH₃ emission decreased by 41.52%. In conclusion, 10% MS appears to be optimal for pig manure composting, as it can augment microbial abundance and mitigate nitrogen loss. This study offers a more ecologically sound and economically viable method for curtailing nitrogen loss during composting.

Advanced approaches for resource recovery from wastewater and activated sludge: A review

Due to resource scarcity, current industrial systems are switching from waste treatment, such as wastewater treatment and biomass, to resource recovery (RR). Biofuels, manure, pesticides, organic acids, and other bioproducts with a great market value can be produced from wastewater and activated sludge (AS). This will not only help in the transition from a linear economy to a circular economy, but also contribute to sustainable development. However, the cost of recovering resources from wastewater and AS to produce value-added products is quite high as compared to conventional treatment methods. In addition, most antioxidant technologies remain at the laboratory scale that have not yet reached the level at industrial scale. In order to promote the innovation of resource recovery technology, the various methods of treating wastewater and AS to produce biofuels, nutrients and energy are reviewed, including biochemistry, thermochemistry and chemical stabilization. The limitations of wastewater and AS treatment methods are prospected from biochemical characteristics, economic and environmental factors. The biofuels derived from third generation feedstocks, such as wastewater are more sustainable. Microalgal biomass are being used to produce biodiesel, bioethanol, biohydrogen, biogas, biooils, bioplastics, biofertilizers, biochar and biopesticides. New technologies and policies can promote a circular economy based on biological materials.

Synergetic effect and mechanism of elementary sulphur, MgSO4 and KH2PO4 progressive reinforcement on pig manure composting nitrogen retention

The potential of sulphur (S), MgSO₄ (Mg), and KH₂PO₄ (P) in nitrogen retention, ammonia emission decrease, and microbial community succession during composting needs to be investigated. To achieve this, different levels of S (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8% in dry weight) plus Mg and P (S + Mg + P) were progressively added in 70 days pig manure aerobic composting. The results revealed that the amendment increased salinity and lowered pH and dephytotoxication of the product with the increase of S amount. However, no significant inhibition effects were observed on the evolution of the thermophilic phase and product maturity. In addition, the amendment significantly reduced the total NH₃ and N₂O emissions by 29.66%-58.83% and 20.89%-56.53%, increased NH₄⁺ level by 17.31%-73.27% in thermophilic phase and NO₃^- content by 37.12%-54.84% in a mature phase, and elevated the total Kjeldahl nitrogen content by 15.49%-37.35% during the composting. In addition, compared to the control, the supplement markedly encouraged the formation of guanite in the compost product. The S addition stimulated the growth of Anseongella, Actinomadura, Chelativorans, Castellaniella, Luteimonas, and Steroidobacter microbial communities which functioned well in the degradation of nitrogen-containing compounds and organic matter. Evidence from Redundancy Analysis, Firmicutes, Myxococcus, Chloroflexi, Gemmatimonadota, and Deinococcota showed positive correlations with pH. These results imply that adding S-Mg-P amendment encourages the population and activity of specific functional microorganisms, and facilitated the ammonia emission reduction by lowering pH and thus reserved nitrogen through the formation of guanite during composting. The investigation of bacterial community abundance and environmental variables at the phylum and genus levels over time revealed that adding of 0.6% S in conjunction with P and Mg minerals was suitable for nitrogen loss mitigation in composting. The findings suggest using S + Mg + P supplement to conserve nitrogen in pig dung aerobic composting.

Exploring gaseous emissions and pivotal enzymatic activity during co-composting of branch and pig manure: the effect of particle size of bulking agents

The purpose of current study was to probe the effect of various length of branch on gaseous emissions and vital enzymatic activity. Four lengths (<2 cm, 2 cm, 5 cm, and 10 cm) of clipped branch were mingled with collected pig manure for 100 days aerobic fermentation. The consequence demonstrated that the amendment of 2 cm of branch showed conducive to decline the greenhouse gas emissions, which the CH₄ emissions decreased by 1.62-40.10%, and the N₂O emissions decreased by 21.91-34.04% contrasted with other treatments. Furthermore, the peak degree of enzymatic activities was also observed in 2 cm of branch treatment by the optimizing living condition for microbes. In view of microbiological indicators, the most abundant and complex bacterial community could be monitor in 2 cm of branch composting pile, which verified the microbial facilitation. Summing up, the strategy of 2 cm branch amendment would be recommended.

Effect of corn pre-puffing on the efficiency of MgO-engineered biochar for phosphorus recovery from livestock wastewater: mechanistic investigations and cost benefit analyses

To improve the phosphorus (P) recovery efficiency from livestock wastewater, a novel MgO doped mildewed corn biochar with thermal pre-puffing treatment (Mg-PBC) and without pre-puffing (Mg-BC) was synthesized and tested. The thermal-puffing pretreatment improved the effectiveness of metal soaking and MgO dispersion. P recovery time with Mg-PBC (7 h) was significantly shorter than that with Mg-BC (12 h). Moreover, Mg-PBC showed significantly higher P recovery capacity (241 mg g−1) than Mg-BC (96.6 mg g−1). P recovery capacity of the Mg-PBC fitted to the Thomas model was 90.7 mg g−1, which was 4 times higher than that of Mg-BC (22.9 mg g−1) under column test conditions. The mechanisms involved in P recovery included precipitation, surface complexation, and electrostatic interaction. After adsorption, both Mg-BC and Mg-PBC showed relatively low regeneration abilities. The P loaded Mg-BC (Mg-BC-P) and Mg-PBC (Mg-PBC-P), the later particularly, obviously increased the available P content and promoted plant growth. The release of P increased with time in the Mg-PBC-P treated soil, while it decreased with time in the P fertilizer treated soil. A cost–benefit analysis revealed that thermal-puffing pretreatment greatly increased the profit of MgO doped biochar from −0.66 to 5.90 US$ kg−1. These findings highlight that biomass pre-puffing is a feasible treatment to produce MgO modified biochar and to recover P from livestock wastewater, and that the Mg-PBC-P can be used as a slow-release P fertilizer.

Elucidating the characteristic of leachates released from microplastics under different aging conditions: Perspectives of dissolved organic carbon fingerprints and nano-plastics

Despite numerous studies that have been devoted to investigating the aging behaviors of microplastics (MPs), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nano-plastics (NPs) released from MPs under different aging conditions were limited. Herein, the characterizations and underlying mechanisms of DOC and NPs leaching from MPs (PVC and PS) in the aquatic environment for 130 days under different aging conditions were investigated. The results showed that aging could reduce the abundance of MPs, and high temperature and UV aging generated small-sized MPs (< 100 μm), especially UV aging. DOC-releasing characteristics were related to MP type and aging condition. Meanwhile, MPs were prone to release protein-like and hydrophilic substances except for 60 °C aging of PS MPs. Additionally, 8.77 × 10⁹-8.87 × 10¹⁰ and 4.06 × 10⁹-3.94 × 10¹⁰ NPs/L were detected in leachates from PVC and PS MPs-aged treatments, respectively. High temperature and UV promoted the release of NPs, especially UV irradiation. Meanwhile, smaller sizes and rougher NPs were observed in UV-aged treatments, implying higher ecological risks of leachates from MPs under UV aging. This study highlights the leachate released from MPs under different aging conditions comprehensively, which could offset the knowledge gap between the MPs' aging and their potential threats.

Bio-assembled MgO-coated tea waste biochar efficiently decontaminates phosphate from water and kitchen waste fermentation liquid

Crystal morphology of metal oxides in engineered metal-biochar composites governs the removal of phosphorus (P) from aqueous solutions. Up to our best knowledge, preparation of bio-assembled MgO-coated biochar and its application for the removal of P from solutions and kitchen waste fermentation liquids have not yet been studied. Therefore, in this study, a needle-like MgO particle coated tea waste biochar composite (MTC) was prepared through a novel biological assembly and template elimination process. The produced MTC was used as an adsorbent for removing P from a synthetic solution and real kitchen waste fermentation liquid. The maximum P sorption capacities of the MTC, deduced from the Langmuir model, were 58.80 mg g−1 from the solution at pH 7 and 192.8 mg g−1 from the fermentation liquid at pH 9. The increase of ionic strength (0–0.1 mol L−1 NaNO3) reduced P removal efficiency from 98.53% to 93.01% in the synthetic solution but had no significant impact on P removal from the fermentation liquid. Precipitation of MgHPO4 and Mg(H2PO4)2 (76.5%), ligand exchange (18.0%), and electrostatic attraction (5.5%) were the potential mechanisms for P sorption from the synthetic solution, while struvite formation (57.6%) and ligand exchange (42.2%) governed the sorption of P from the kitchen waste fermentation liquid. Compared to previously reported MgO-biochar composites, MTC had a lower P sorption capacity in phosphate solution but a higher P sorption capacity in fermentation liquid. Therefore, the studied MTC could be used as an effective candidate for the removal of P from aqueous environments, and especially from the fermentation liquids. In the future, it will be necessary to systematically compare the performance of metal-biochar composites with different metal oxide crystal morphology for P removal from different types of wastewater.

Biochar as smart organic catalyst to regulate bacterial dynamics during food waste composting

The impact of wheat straw biochar (WSB) on bacterial dynamics succession during food waste (FW) composting was analyzed. Six treatments [0(T1), 2.5(T2), 5 (T3), 7.5 (T4), 10 (T5), and 15 %(T6)] dry weight WSB were used with FW and saw dust for composting. At the highest thermal peak at 59 ℃ in T6, the pH varied from 4.5 to 7.3, and electrical conductivity among the treatments varied from 1.2 to 2.0 mScm¹. Firmicutes (25-97 %), Proteobacteria (8-45 %), and Bacteroidota (5-50 %) were among the dominate phyla of the treatments. Whereas, Bacillus (5-85 %), Limoslactobacillus (2-40 %), and Sphingobacterium (2-32 %) were highest among the identified genus in treatments but surprisingly Bacteroides was in greater abundance in the control treatments. Moreover, heatmap constructed with 35 various genera in all the treatments showed that Gammaproteobacterial genera contributed in large proportion after 42 days in T6. Additionally, a dynamic shift from Lactobacillus fermentum to higher abundance of Bacillus thermoamylovorans was reported on 42 days of FW composting. Biochar 15 % amendment can improve FW composting by influencing bacterial dynamics.

Valorization of tropical fruits waste for production of commercial biorefinery products - A review

Tropical fruit wastes (TFW) are considered as the major source of food and nutrition in the topical countries. In the recent years, modernization of agriculture has increased the tropical fruit production. Higher fruit production led to an increasing abundance in the tropical fruit waste. In general, the tropical fruit waste has no economic value and ends up in landfill. But in recent years it was observed that the tropical fruit waste can be valorized to produce value-added products ranging from compost, phytochemicals, and food products to biofuels. The tropical fruit waste has great potential to produce useful products in tropical areas. This review literature is an endeavor to understand the major tropical fruit wastes and their composition. The review presents a detailed investigation on tropical fruit waste composition, its conversion potential, role of microbes in waste valorization, production of commercially valuable products and future perspectives in waste valorization.

Microplastics as an underestimated emerging contaminant in solid organic waste and their biological products: Occurrence, fate and ecological risks

Microplastics (MPs), as an emerging pollutant, have been widely detected in aquatic, terrestrial, and atmospheric ecosystems. Recently, more researchers indicated that solid organic waste is also a crucial repository of MPs and has become a vital pollution source in ecosystems. Although the occurrence and fate of MPs in solid organic waste and the interaction between MPs and biological treatments have been explored, there still needs to be comprehensive summaries. Hence, this study reviewed the occurrence and characteristics of MPs in solid organic waste and organic fertilizers. Meanwhile, this study summarized the influence of MPs on biological treatments (composting and anaerobic digestion) and their degradation characteristics. MPs are abundant in solid organic waste (0-220 ×10³ particles/kg) and organic fertilizer (0-30 ×10³ particles/kg), PP and PE are the prominent MPs, and fibers and fragments are the main shapes. MPs can affect the carbon and nitrogen conversion during biological treatments and interfere with microbial communities. The MP's characteristics changed after biological treatments, which should further consider their potential ecological risks. This review points out the existing problems of MPs in organic waste recycling and provides directions for their treatment in the future.

Insights into carbon loss reduction during aerobic composting of organic solid waste: A meta-analysis and comprehensive literature review

Carbon neutrality is now receiving global concerns for the sustainable development of human societies, of which how to reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions and enhance carbon conservation and sequestration becomes increasingly critical. Therefore, this study conducted a meta-analysis and literature review to assess carbon loss and to explore the main factors that impact carbon loss during organic solid waste (OSW) composting. The results indicated that over 40 % of carbon was lost through composting, mainly as CO₂-C and merely as CH₄-C. Experimental scale, feedstock varieties, composting systems, etc., all impacted the carbon loss, and there was generally higher carbon loss under optimal conditions (i.e., C/N ratio (15-25), pH (6.5-7.5), moisture content (65-75 %)). Most mitigation strategies in conventional composting (CC) systems (e.g., additive supplementary, feedstock adjustment, and optimized aeration, etc.) barely mediated the TC and CO₂-C loss but dramatically reduced the emission of CH₄-C through composting. Among them, feedstock adjustment by elevating the feedstock C/N ratio effectively reduced the TC loss, and chemical additives facilitated the conservation of both carbon and nitrogen. By comparison, there was generally higher carbon loss in the novel composting systems (e.g. hyperthermophilic and electric field enhanced composting, etc.). However, the impacts of different mitigation strategies and novel composting systems on carbon loss reduction through composting were probably underestimated for the inappropriate evaluation methods (composting period-dependent instead of maturity originated). Therefore, further studies are needed to explore carbon transformation through composting, to establish methods and standards for carbon loss evaluation, and to develop novel techniques and systems for enhanced carbon conservation through composting. Overall, the results of this study could provide a reference for carbon-friendly composting for future OSW management under the background of global carbon neutrality.

Composting pig manure with nano-zero-valent iron amendment: Insights into the carbon cycle and balance

The effectiveness of nano-zero-valent-iron (NZVI) addition during composting of pig manure (PM) was investigated. Different dosages of NZVI were mixed with PM substrate during a 50 days composting process. The results revealed that the higher share of NZVI addition, the higher OM degradation rate is. On contrary, it was observed that the higher share of NZVI addition, the lower the fulvic acid and the humin degradation rate is. Meanwhile, NZVI amendment increased the CO₂ and CH₄ emissions by 29-47 % and 53-57 %, respectively. The in-depth analysis showed that NZVI addition increased the activity of Sphaerobacter and Luteimonas, which eventually led to the degradation of hard-to-degrade OM faster. Additionally, NZVI was found to increase the filtration of microorganisms, reducing the toxicity and hygiene of compost products. No significant improvement in humic substance enhancement was observed during composting with NZVI addition but improved OM degradation.

Altered global signal topography in Alzheimer's disease

BACKGROUND

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease associated with widespread disruptions in intrinsic local specialization and global integration in the functional system of the brain. These changes in integration may further disrupt the global signal (GS) distribution, which might represent the local relative contribution to global activity in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

METHODS

fMRI scans from a discovery dataset (n = 809) and a validated dataset (n = 542) were used in the analysis. We investigated the alteration of GS topography using the GS correlation (GSCORR) in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD. The association between GS alterations and functional network properties was also investigated based on network theory. The underlying mechanism of GSCORR alterations was elucidated using imaging-transcriptomics.

FINDINGS

Significantly increased GS topography in the frontal lobe and decreased GS topography in the hippocampus, cingulate gyrus, caudate, and middle temporal gyrus were observed in patients with AD (P_adj < 0.05). Notably, topographical GS changes in these regions correlated with cognitive ability (P < 0.05). The changes in GS topography also correlated with the changes in functional network segregation (ρ = 0.5). Moreover, the genes identified based on GS topographical changes were enriched in pathways associated with AD and neurodegenerative diseases.

INTERPRETATION

Our findings revealed significant changes in GS topography and its molecular basis, confirming the informative role of GS in AD and further contributing to the understanding of the relationship between global and local neuronal activities in patients with AD.
