Identification of Epileptic EEG Signals Using Convolutional Neural Networks

Epilepsy is one of the chronic neurological disorders that is characterized by a sudden burst of excess electricity in the brain. This abnormality appears as a seizure, the detection of which is an important research topic. An important tool used to study brain activity features, neurological disorders and particularly epileptic seizures, is known as electroencephalography (EEG). The visual inspection of epileptic abnormalities in EEG signals by neurologists is time-consuming. Different scientific approaches have been used to accurately detect epileptic seizures from EEG signals, and most of those approaches have obtained good performance. In this study, deep learning based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) was considered to increase the performance of the identification system of epileptic seizures. We applied a cross-validation technique in the design phase of the system. For efficiency, comparative results between other machine-learning approaches and deep CNNs have been obtained. The experiments were performed using standard datasets. The results obtained indicate the efficiency of using CNN in the detection of epilepsy.

Impact of machine learning techniques on hand gesture recognition

In this study, we propose a vision-based mouse controller capable of controlling objects from a distant location via hand gestures. The proposed hybrid model constitutes hand detection, prediction of hand states and direction and finally, with the aid of deep learning algorithm, we systematically control hand gestures to reposition objects on computer screen. This hybrid system is explicitly designed to control mouse on computer screen during formal presentation. Random movement of hand from up to down and right to left move the mouse pointer and sends signal to the system utilizing states of the hand. Here, close hand places the mouse button on active mode while open hand releases the button. The proposed hybrid model is made up of two modules: Single Shot Multi Box Detection (SSD) structure utilized to detect hand while Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is utilized for prediction. For comparative purposes, we performed similar experiment where SSD is used for hand detection while Radial Basis Function Network (RBFN) is used for hand states prediction. In the comparative results of hand states prediction, SSD+CNN greatly outperformed SSD+RBFN. The proposed hybrid model is vision-based hence, it does not require additional hardware to perform its task. Overall performance of the framework depicts that the system is accurate and robust.

Application of deep learning in structural health management of concrete structures

Structural health management constitutes an essential factor in ensuring the durability of concrete structures. Cracks in concrete, reinforcement corrosion, alkali–silica reaction and efflorescence attacks are common concrete defects that can be identified visually. However, the detection and classification of these defects in concrete bridges and other high-rise concrete structures is a difficult and expensive process using manual approaches. In this research, a deep learning application is applied to detect and classify concrete defects. Concrete images from the public repository were used to create the explored database. The database was divided into training and validation subsets. The visual geometry group (Vgg19), neural search architecture (nasnetlarge) and residual inception block (vinceptionresnetv2) algorithms were used to analyse the images. The results of the overall performance show that the Vgg19 algorithm recorded higher accuracy in the detection and classification of concrete defects when compared to the nasnetlarge and inceptionresnetv2 algorithms. The efficiency of the proposed approach was evaluated using a new dataset containing images of concrete defects. The outcome of this research shows clearly that deep learning models could enhance the efficiency of concrete structural health monitoring in a multi-classification scenario.

Systematic Literature Review on Machine Learning and Student Performance Prediction: Critical Gaps and Possible Remedies

Improving the quality, developing and implementing systems that can provide advantages to students, and predicting students’ success during the term, at the end of the term, or in the future are some of the primary aims of education. Due to its unique ability to create relationships and obtain accurate results, artificial intelligence and machine learning are tools used in this field to achieve the expected goals. However, the diversity of studies and the differences in their content create confusion and reduce their ability to pioneer future studies. In this study, we performed a systematic literature review of student performance prediction studies in three different databases between 2010 and 2020. The results are presented as percentages by categorizing them as either model, dataset, validation, evaluation, or aims. The common points and differences in the studies are determined, and critical gaps and possible remedies are presented. The results and identified gaps could be eliminated with standardized evaluation and validation strategies. It is determined that student performance prediction studies should be more frequently focused on deep learning models in the future. Finally, the problems that can be solved using a global dataset created by a global education information consortium, as well as its advantages, are presented.

Fetal Health State Detection Using Interval Type-2 Fuzzy Neural Networks

Diagnosis of fetal health is a difficult process that depends on various input factors. Depending on the values or the interval of values of these input symptoms, the detection of fetal health status is implemented. Sometimes it is difficult to determine the exact values of the intervals for diagnosing the diseases and there may always be disagreement between the expert doctors. As a result, the diagnosis of diseases is often carried out in uncertain conditions and can sometimes cause undesirable errors. Therefore, the vague nature of diseases and incomplete patient data can lead to uncertain decisions. One of the effective approaches to solve such kind of problem is the use of fuzzy logic in the construction of the diagnostic system. This paper proposes a type-2 fuzzy neural system (T2-FNN) for the detection of fetal health status. The structure and design algorithms of the T2-FNN system are presented. Cardiotocography, which provides information about the fetal heart rate and uterine contractions, is employed for monitoring fetal status. Using measured statistical data, the design of the system is implemented. Comparisons of various models are presented to prove the effectiveness of the proposed system. The system can be utilized in clinical information systems to obtain valuable information about fetal health status.
