Abstract
PURPOSE Explore the visual outcome and complications of iris fixation intraocular lenses (IFIOL) and sutureless scleral-fixated intraocular lenses (SSFIOL) in the surgical management of patients without exchanging dislocated posterior chamber intraocular lenses (PCIOLs) in the vitreous. METHODS Retrospectively, 14 IFIOL and 15 SSFIOL reimplantations for dislocated PCIOLs were analyzed. Mean follow-up of reIFIOL group and reSSFIOL group: 11.3±2.0 (range: 9-15) months and 11.8±2.2 (range: 9-16) months, respectively. Preoperative and postoperative outcomes, operative indications, and complications were evaluated. RESULTS Primary surgical indications were pseudoexfoliation (PXE) (21.4%), post-cataract surgery (PCS) (35.7%), trauma (42.8%) in the reIFIOL group, and PXE (26.6%), PCS (40%) trauma (33.3%) in reSSFIOL group, respectively. At the latest follow-up, there was an improvement in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (0.053±0.051 to 0.53±0.13, P<0.0001) in reIFIOL group and (0.05±0.02 to 0.64±0.16, P<0.0001) in reSSFIOL group. Postoperative complications of reIFIOL group and reSSFIOL group included corneal edema (14.2%; nil), IOP elevation (21.4%; 7.1%), bullous keratopathy (14.2%; nil), anterior uveitis (35.7%; 13.3%), cystoid macular edema (CME) (21.4%; 7.1%), pupil ovalization (21.4%; nil), broken haptic (none; 13.3%), IOL exchange (nil; 13.3%), and vitreous hemorrhage (nil; 14.2%). CONCLUSIONS Self-dislocated IOL reimplantation may enable much earlier visual rehabilitation in the reSSFIOL group than in the reIFIOL group. Moreover, the 27G trocar-assisted reSSFIOL technique takes a shorter operation time and relatively lower complication rates. However, further prospective studies with larger series and longer follow-up periods are required.

Abstract
N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is a disinfection byproduct that forms at the presence of an organic nitrogen precursor. Doxylamine, an antihistaminic pharmaceutical, is a precursor of NDMA and has been shown to form NDMA in the presence of chloramine. In this study, the effect of Doxylamine as an NDMA precursor has been further studied during chloramination. The end product and byproducts during chloramination were investigated using a high-resolution mass spectrometer by taking samples at different time intervals. Results suggest that NDMA is not the only end product forming during chloramination of Doxylamine and several transformation products that do not end up as NDMA may form. A group of these transformation products have been selected based on their relative amounts during chloramination with time and notated as Focus Tentative Transformation Products (FTTPn). The identification of these byproducts will make it easier to study the conditions during chloramination that may favour these 'known' transformation products with the use of less sophisticated analytical instruments. Then, it might lead to the establishment of chloramination protocols that will minimise the formation of NDMA from its precursors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Endoscopic balloon dilatation (EBD) offers a safe and non-invasive surgical option for the treatment of subglottic stenosis. Patient selection is important to achieve good results and to detect which patients are more prone to the development of complications. The aim of this study was to determine predictors of postoperative problems and early complications in primary EBD surgeries. METHODS A retrospective analysis was made of patients with acquired subglottic stenosis who were operated on with the EBD technique between January 2010 and December 2019 in the Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Department of Baskent University Hospital. Demographic data including the age and sex of the patients were collected together with etiology, presence of chromosomal or craniofacial anomaly (C/CA), duration of prolonged intubation (DPI), and extubation dilatation timeframe (EDT). Intra and postoperative follow-up data were recorded of the need for intubation or tracheotomy, development of desaturation, and grade and type of stenosis. RESULTS The male to female ratio was 2:1. The patients comprised 42 males and 22 females with a mean age of 296.52 ± 551.93 days. The cause of prolonged intubation was surgery for congenital heart disease in 50 (78.1%) patients and prematurity in 14 (21.9%). The type of lesion was acute granulation in 44 (72.1%) and chronic granulation in 17 (27.9%) patients. C/CA was determined in 13 patients, the mean grade of stenosis was 76.33 ± 15.21%, mean DPI was 25.25 ± 35.49 days, and mean EDT was calculated as 78.23 ± 373.82 days. Desaturation following endoscopic balloon dilatation developed in 26 (40.6%), orotracheal intubation was required in 10 (15.6%), tracheotomy in 10 (15.6%), and cardiopulmonary arrest occurred in 4 (6.25%). Prematurity, a longer duration of preoperative intubation, longer time from extubation to dilatation, older age, and higher grade of stenosis were determined as factors associated with postoperative early respiratory complications. CONCLUSION EBD indication should be carefully considered in children with acquired subglottic stenosis. To achieve better results and minimise complications, EBD should be performed without delay.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Anosmia or hyposmia, often accompanied by changes in taste, is recognized as a common symptom that can assist in the diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The pathogenesis of olfactory dysfunction in COVID-19 is not yet fully understood. MR imaging represents a useful anatomic imaging method for the evaluation of olfactory dysfunction associated with varying etiologies, including viral infection, trauma, and neurodegenerative processes. This case-control study was conducted to compare quantitative measurements of olfactory anatomic structures between patients diagnosed with COVID-19 associated with persistent olfactory dysfunction and healthy controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study has a retrospective design. Cranial MR imaging was performed on all participants in both the patient and control groups. The bilateral olfactory bulb volume, olfactory tract length, and olfactory sulcus depth were measured in all patients. RESULTS A total of 116 people aged 18-60 years, including 36 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and 80 controls, were included in the study. All measured values were compared between the patient and control groups. The right, left, and total olfactory bulb volume values were significantly lower in the patient group than in the control group. The patient group also had significantly lower right and left olfactory sulcus depth and olfactory tract length values compared with those in the control group. CONCLUSIONS MR imaging findings can be used to demonstrate olfactory injury in patients with COVID-19. The olfactory pathway may represent an alternative route for virus entry into the central nervous system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prenatal sex steroids have been associated with autism in several clinical and epidemiological studies. It is unclear how this relates to the autistic traits of the mother and how early this can be detected during pregnancy and postnatal development. METHODS Maternal serum was collected from pregnant women (n = 122) before or during their first ultrasound appointment [mean = 12.7 (SD = 0.7) weeks]. Concentrations of the following were measured via immunoassays: testosterone, estradiol, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate, progesterone; and sex hormone-binding globulin which was used to compute the free fractions of estradiol (FEI) and testosterone (FTI). Standardised human choriogonadotropin (hCG) and pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) values were obtained from clinical records corresponding to the same serum samples. Mothers completed the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) and for their infants, the Quantitative Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (Q-CHAT) when the infants were between 18 and 20 months old. RESULTS FEI was positively associated with maternal autistic traits in univariate (n = 108, Pearson's r = 0.22, p = 0.019) and multiple regression models (semipartial r = 0.19, p = 0.048) controlling for maternal age and a diagnosis of PCOS. Maternal estradiol levels significantly interacted with fetal sex in predicting infant Q-CHAT scores, with a positive relationship in males but not females (n = 100, interaction term: semipartial r = 0.23, p = 0.036) after controlling for maternal AQ and other covariates. The opposite was found for standardised hCG values and Q-CHAT scores, with a positive association in females but not in males (n = 151, interaction term: r = -0.25, p = 0.005). LIMITATIONS Sample size of this cohort was small, with potential ascertainment bias given elective recruitment. Clinical covariates were controlled in multiple regression models, but additional research is needed to confirm the statistically significant findings in larger cohorts. CONCLUSION Maternal steroid factors during pregnancy are associated with autistic traits in mothers and their infants.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer thickness (GCIPLT) in the affected eyes to fellow unaffected eyes of patients with unilateral Fuchs' uveitis syndrome (FUS) and analyze their change over time. METHODS Twenty seven unilateral FUS patients who did not have concomitant systemic or ocular disease were retrospectively enrolled. Central macular thickness (CMT), RNFL thickness, and GCIPLT measurements were evaluated. Data was analyzed using the non-parametric Brunner-Langer model (LD-F2 design) and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. RESULTS The mean age of the patients was 40.2 ± 10.2 years. The median disease duration was 11 (2-62) months. The median best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of the affected eyes and the fellow eyes was 0.22 (0.00-2.50) vs. 0.00 (0.0-0.10) logMAR at the initial visit and 0.05 (0.00-2.50) vs. 0.00 (0.0-0.30) logMAR at the final visit. The change in BCVA was found significant in the affected eyes, but not in the fellow eyes (p < 0.001 and p = 0.287, respectively). The median CMT in the affected eyes at the final visit was not statistically different from the value at the initial visit (255 (157-306) vs. 245 (140-310) µm, p = 0.256). The change in RNFL thickness over time in the affected eyes was similar to the fellow unaffected eyes of the patients with unilateral FUS at all quadrants, with non-significant time and group effects (p > 0.05). However, median GCIPLT in all quadrants (except superonasal) in the affected eyes was statistically lower than the fellow eyes at the initial and final visits (p < 0.05). The most affected quadrant of the ganglion cell complex was inferonasal in the involved eyes (79 (42-97) vs. 75 (43-87) µm) at initial and final visits (p = 0.033 for time effect and p < 0.001 for group effect, respectively). CONCLUSION Median CMT and RNFL thickness did not change during follow-up in the affected eyes of patients with unilateral FUS. Median GCIPLT in the affected eyes declined over time in all quadrants. Ganglion cell loss was also most prominent in the inferonasal quadrant in the affected eyes. FUS patients should be followed up long-term in terms of ganglion cell loss, especially in the inferonasal quadrant.

Abstract
Purpose To manage reattachment of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment using tissue adhesive (fibrin glue) in five patients. Methods Five eyes of five patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment were treated with 23-gauge pars plana vitrectomy and the application of fibrin glue (Tisseel Lyo) into the break under air without laser photocoagulation or cryopexy. Results The median age of patients was 64 (range, 46–82) years, and the median duration of symptoms was 15 (range, 7–60) days. Three eyes had inferior and two had superior rhegmatogenous retinal detachments. Successful retinal reattachment was achieved in all cases and maintained during the followıng 10 to 24 months. The median best-corrected visual acuity improved from 2 / 100 preoperatively to a Snellen visual acuity of 20 / 50 by 6 months postoperatively. No postoperative complications were detected during the follow-up period. Conclusions Excellent adhesive effects of fibrin glue with respect to sealing retinal tears with no side effects were seen in our study. With further prospective studies, this technique could be an alternative method to conventional retinopexy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate central macular thickness (CMT) and choroidal thickness (CT) in the eyes of patients with cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF). METHODS A cross-sectional, prospective observational study of 92 patients with CVRF and 21 healthy individuals was conducted. Patients were divided into four groups according to the SCORE system. CMT was evaluated via spectral-domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). CT at five defined points (subfoveal) [SF] and nasal 500 μm [N0.5] and 1500 μm [N1.5] and 500 μm [T0.5] and temporal 1500 μm [T1.5] from the center of the fovea were measured via enhanced depth imaging (EDI)-OCT. RESULTS Mean SFCT at right eyes (RE) and left eyes (LE) were 311.21 ± 77.7 μm and 303.5 ± 49.6 μm, respectively, in patients with mild CVRF (Group 1); 266.5 ± 63.2 μm and 267.0 ± 62.6 μm, respectively, in patients with moderate CVRF (Group 2); 264.7 ± 57.5 μm and 272.3 ± 64.6 μm, respectively, in patients with high CVRF (Group 3); 272.3 ± 64.6 μm and 271.2 ± 63.4 μm, respectively, in patients with very high-risk CVRF (with coronary arterial disease (CAD) (Group 4); and 352.0 ± 74.4 μm and 363.1 ± 89.0 μm, respectively, in the control group. CT (at both eyes) was significantly lower at the subfoveal location in all study groups (P < 0.05), but at nasal and at temporal quadrants of group 3 and group 4 (P < 0.05). No significant difference in CMT was detected between the study and control groups. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated that CVRF might result in a remarkably thinner CT. Furthermore, subretinal drusenoid deposits were detected at a higher rate in the patients with CVRF than controls, and that rate increased in accordance with the severity of CAD. In the future, changes in CT may be used as a promising novel biomarker as part of the SCORE system prior to the development of CAD.

Abstract
While appendiceal intussusception is an uncommon pathological condition, mucinous cystadenoma of the appendix is a particularly rare entity. We report a case of appendiceal intussusception induced by a mucinous cystadenoma presenting as acute appendicitis. A 37-year-old woman was admitted with a one-day history of acute onset, right lower abdominal pain. Computed tomography showed swelling of the appendix, a pathological mass in the ileocolic region and oedematous pericolonic fat stranding. Emergency laparotomy via a McBurney incision revealed that the base of the appendix was swollen and intussuscepting into the caecum. Palpation of the caecum demonstrated an intraluminal mass, 6cm in size, at the appendicocaecal junction. After extension of the McBurney incision, a caecotomy was performed to investigate the mass, following which a cauliflower-like tumour started to protrude. En bloc excision was undertaken of both the appendix and the tumorous mass with a clear surgical margin to send for frozen section analysis. The biopsy samples indicated a mucinous neoplasm. Ileocaecal resection was therefore performed with ileocolic anastomosis. The resected specimen contained a tumour arising from the appendix. The tumour measured 5.3cm x 5cm x 3cm in the caecal cavity and the appendix had invaginated into the caecum at its base. The cut surface of the appendix showed the mucinous tumour projecting into the caecal cavity. Microscopic examination revealed a low grade mucinous cystadenoma.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to share our experience in the prenatal diagnosis (PND) of organic acidemias (OAs) in our clinic. This study consisted of 10 cases in whom an invasive prenatal diagnostic test (IPNDT) was performed by a single physician for the PND of OAs. Median maternal age, parity, gestational week of IPNDT, prenatal test indications, OA types, method of IPNDT, IPNDT results and gestational outcomes were evaluated. Targeted mutation analysis was performed in fetal DNA for the specific mutations by using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and direct Sanger sequencing. The diagnosis was confirmed by genetic targeted mutation analysis after birth. Median maternal age, parity and gestational week of IPNDT values were 30 (range 21-35), one (range 0-4) and 11.5 (range 11-17), respectively. Indications for IPNDT were mother being a carrier of the disease for one case (10.0%) and at least one child with OA in the family for nine cases (90.0%). Organic acidemia types investigated were maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) and isovaleric acidemia (IVA) in five (50.0%), three (30.0%) and two (20.0%) patients, respectively. Chorion villus sampling (CVS) was done in seven (70.0%) patients and amniocentesis was performed in three (30.0%) patients. Eight fetuses (80.0%) were found to be healthy and two fetuses (20.0%) were found to be affected (one case with IVA and one case with MMA). The two pregnancies (20.0%) with affected fetuses were terminated. Prenatal diagnosis of OAs is critical. Appropriate prenatal counseling should be given to families with known risk factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of mortality in obese patients. We aimed to investigate the influence of significant weight loss following laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) on carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) and epicardial fat thickness (EFT) which are the independent predictors of subclinical atherosclerosis. METHODS AND RESULTS Patients were recruited for standard indications. A total of 105 patients (79 women and 26 men) with the mean age of 43.61 ± 12.42 were prospectively enrolled. On B-mode duplex ultrasound; the mean CIMT at the far wall of both left and right common carotid arteries were measured. EFT was measured on the free wall of the right ventricle at end-diastole from the parasternal long-axis view by standard transthorasic 2D echocardiography. Delta (Δ) values were obtained by subtracting sixth month values from the baseline values. Body mass index (BMI) was significantly reduced from 46.95 ± 7.54 to 33.54 ± 6.41 kg/m2 (p < 0.001) in sixth months after LSG. Both EFT and CIMT were significantly decreased after surgery (8.68 ± 1.95 mm vs. 7.41 ± 1.87 mm; p < 0.001 and 0.74 ± 0.13 mm vs. 0.67 ± 0.11 mm; p < 0.001 respectively). A significant correlation between ΔEFT and ΔBMI (r = 0.431, p < 0.001) was shown. ΔCIMT is significantly correlated with ΔEFT, ΔBMI and Δ systolic blood pressure (r = 0.310, r = 0.285 and r = 0.231 respectively, p < 0.05 for all). In multivariate stepwise linear regression analysis; among variables only ΔBMI was the independent predictor of ΔEFT (β = 153, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION Early atherosclerotic structural changes may be reversed or improved by sustained weight loss after LSG in asymptomatic obese patients.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this study was to assess the association of macular edema (ME) with plasma homocysteine, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and folic acid levels in patients with Type 2 diabetes. Methods Sixty-five diabetic subjects with no retinopathy and nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) (no DR, without ME, with ME: 16, 25, 24, respectively), 28 with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) (with and without ME: 14, 14, respectively), and 19 healthy subjects as control were recruited in this cross-sectional study Plasma homocysteine, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, and folate levels were determined after 8-hour of fasting for all subjects. The levels of serum homocysteine and vitamin B6 were measured using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection, and the levels of serum vitamin B12 and folic acid were measured by electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. Results When diabetic groups with ME were compared with diabetic groups without ME for homocysteine, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, and folic acid, the only significant difference was detected in homocysteine levels (p=0.001). There was no significant difference between NPDR with ME group compared with NPDR without ME group and no DR group for plasma homocysteine, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, and folic acid (p=0.200, p=0.660; p=0.999, p=0.678; p=1.0, p=0.248; p=1.0, p=0.982, respectively). On the other hand, when PDR with ME group was compared with PDR without ME group, there was only significant difference in homocysteine levels (p=0.023). Conclusions Mild to moderate elevation of homocysteine may explain the role of vascular dysregulation and endothelial dysfunction in patients with DR. The present study suggests hyperhomocysteinemia may be one of the crucial risk factors for development of ME.

Abstract
AIMS Maintenance of fluid status within an optimal range and accurate assessment of dry weight (DW) is essential in patients on intermittent haemodialysis (HD) treatment. In this study, we aimed to investigate the association of fluid status measured by bioimpedance analysis (BIA) with N-terminal pro-B natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), blood pressure and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) in hemodialysis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 45 hemodialysis patients were enrolled in the study. N-terminal pro-B natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) was measured by immunoassay. Blood pressure (BP) was recorded. Echocardiographic examinations were performed in all patients. Multifrequency bioimpedance analysis was used to assess pre- and post-dialysis fluid status. Overhydration/ extracellular water (OH/ECW) ratio was used as fluid status index and OH/ECW ratio >0.15 was defined as clinical overhydration. Patients were divided into two groups; overhydrated (OH/ECW>0.15) and non-overhydrated (OH/ECW≤0.15). RESULTS OH/ECW, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), LVMI and NT-proBNP levels were significanly reduced after hemodialysis session. The presence of overhydration was more frequent in pre-HD patients compared to post-HD patients (31.1% vs 13.3%, p=0.004). OH/ECW was positively correlated with pre-and post-HD SBP, DBP, LVMI and NT-proBNP (p<0.05). Overhydrated patients had significantly higher values of pre-HD and post-HD SBP, DBP, LVMI and NT-proBNP compared to non-overhydrated patients. In addition, SBP, DBP, LVMI and NT-proBNP levels were significantly reduced after hemodialysis in both overhydrated and non-overhydrated patients group. CONCLUSIONS This study revealed that OH/ECW ratio was significantly associated with SBP, DBP, LVMI and NT-proBNP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Barotrauma is a frequent problem in aviation medicine. Eustachian tube dysfunction plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of barotrauma. Function of the Eustachian tube can be indirectly assessed by multifrequency tympanometry, which provides valuable information about the resistance and permeability of the middle ear in a wide frequency range. The aim of this study was to research whether multifrequency tympanometry could be used for assessing middle ear impairments in pilots. METHODS There were 140 pilots and pilot candidates between the ages of 20-55 with normal otoscopic examination who were evaluated by audiological test batteries. Body mass index values, flight hours, audiometric pure tone thresholds, tympanometry and multifrequency tympanometry test results were noted. RESULTS There was statistically significant decrease in the multifrequency tympanometry measurements of the left and right ears of the pilots with 200-3000 flight hours compared to pilot candidates, and similarly, the pilots with 3000-10,000 flight hours compared to pilot candidates. DISCUSSION Multifrequency tympanometry values changed between pilot candidates and pilots. However, the values of multifrequency tympanometry did not change due to flight hours. This test battery should not be used for follow up of pilots in the clinic. Tuncer MM, Babakurban ST, Aydin E. Middle ear resonance frequency in pilots and pilot candidates. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Ficolins are complement activating peptides that play a role in the initial host defense against infectious pathogens. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the ficolin 2 gene (FCN2) and chronic adenotonsillitis in pediatric cases. STUDY DESIGN Case-control study. METHODS A total of 101 pediatric patients diagnosed with chronic adenotonsillitis and 100 healthy children were enrolled in the study. Genotypes of FCN2 promoter SNPs - 602 G>A and -4 A>G, and the exonic SNP c.772G>T were determined by light SNP assay after realtime PCR analysis using genomic DNA samples obtained from peripheral blood samples of all participants. RESULTS Of the 101 chronic tonsillitis patients, 38 were girls and 63 were boys; the mean age was 5.2 ± 2.3 years. The c.772G>T SNP frequency was significantly higher in chronic adenotonsillitis cases compared to the control group (p = 0.00); however, no significant difference was determined at positions -602 G>A or -4 A>G (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The FCN2 c.772G>T genotype appears to be associated with predisposition to chronic adenotonsillitis in the pediatric age group. This nucleotide change is likely to influence the level of gene expression and contribute to the development of disease.

Abstract
AIM To report the association between melatonin levels in aqueous humor and serum, and diabetic retinopathy (DR) grade in type 2 diabetic patients. METHODS Aqueous humor and plasma samples from 26 patients with DR (in nonproliferative and proliferative stages) and 14 control subjects were collected during cataract surgery after 6 p.m. Melatonin concentrations were determined using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS Melatonin levels were significantly higher in the aqueous humor of patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) [18.57±2.67 pg/mL (range 15.20-23.06) vs 13.63±2.71 pg/mL (range 10.20-20.20), P=0.0001], but not in those with nonproliferative retinopathy (NPDR) [13.79±2.56 pg/mL (range 9.80-20.10) vs 13.63±2.71 pg/mL (range 10.20-20.20), P=0.961] compared to controls. There was decrement in the plasma melatonin level of patients with PDR, but no significant differences between the plasma melatonin levels of the study groups [5.37±1.74 pg/mL (range 2.85-8.65) vs 6.11±1.90 pg/mL (range 3.13-9.41), P=0.293], or between control and DR groups [NPDR 6.11±1.90 pg/mL (range 3.13-9.41) vs control 6.15±1.91 pg/mL (range 2.18-9.86); PDR (5.37±1.74 pg/mL (range 2.85-8.65) vs control 6.15±1.91 pg/mL (range 2.18-9.86), P=0.808, P=0.264]. CONCLUSION Elevated melatonin levels in aqueous humor in PDR may indicate the level to be associated with DR severity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate influence of mitomycin C on fibrosis in temporomandibular joints of rabbits with mandibular traction. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty rabbits (8 control, 12 mitomycin C group) were included. Titanium screws were placed in the anterior edge of the right masseter tuberosity and the posterior part of the right zygoma. Elastic bands were placed between 2 screws to initiate posterio-superior displacement of the mandible to the right. Animals in the control group (CG) received intraarticular NaCl (0.9%) on the nondrawing (left) side, and animals in the study group (SG) received mitomycin C weekly (0.4 mg/mL) for 6 weeks. Rabbits were decapitated, temporomandibular joints were removed, and histopathological investigation was performed. RESULTS: Microscopically, 4 of 6 rabbits in the CG had fibrosis in the temporomandibular joint, whereas only 1 of 11 rabbits in the SG had fibrosis ( P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Application of mitomycin C to the temporomandibular joint of rabbits significantly reduces formation of intraarticular fibrous adhesions. SIGNIFICANCE: This is the first study in the literature investigating the use of mitomycin C in the joints.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Adenotonsillar hypertrophy and chronic tonsillitis are associated with growth interruption during childhood, while adenotonsillectomy has been associated with growth improvement and increased body mass index (BMI). However, no reported study has investigated the effect of adenotonsillectomy on the proportion of body muscle and fat mass. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the effect of adenoidectomy and adenotonsillectomy on body muscle and fat composition in prepubertal children. METHODS Thirty prepubertal children (22 boys, 8 girls; 3-9 years of age) were followed up for 6 months after adenoidectomy or adenotonsillectomy. Twenty-eight age-matched healthy children (12 boys, 16 girls) were followed for the same period, as controls. Data on dietary habits and physical activity were obtained from parent-completed questionnaires at baseline and 6 months. Height and weight z-scores, the amount and percentage of body fat and muscle mass, BMI z-scores, relative BMI and basal metabolic rate were evaluated before and 6 months after surgery with bioelectrical impedance analysis. RESULTS After 6 months, body muscle mass and basal metabolic rate scores were significantly higher than at baseline in both groups (P<0.05). The rate of increase was not different between the groups. In the study group, the relative BMI scores improved significantly (P<0.05). Increases in body fat mass, body fat percentage, height z-scores, weight z-scores and BMI z-scores were not significantly different between the groups at 6 months (P>0.05). The number of overweight and obese children did not change significantly in either group (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Adenotonsillectomy led to improvement in relative BMI and promoted healthy weight gain without increased body fat percentage in prepubertal children.
