Abstract
PURPOSE We aim to detect serum DKK1 level of pediatric patients with OI and to analyze its relationship with the genotype and phenotype of OI patients. METHODS A cohort of pediatric OI patients and age-matched healthy children were enrolled. Serum levels of DKK1 and bone turnover biomarkers were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Pathogenic mutations of OI were detected by next-generation sequencing and confirmed by Sanger sequencing. RESULTS A total of 62 OI children with mean age of 9.50 (4.86, 12.00) years and 29 healthy children were included in this study. The serum DKK1 concentration in OI children was significantly higher than that in healthy children [5.20 (4.54, 6.32) and 4.08 (3.59, 4.92) ng/mL, P < 0.001]. The serum DKK1 concentration in OI children was negatively correlated with height (r = - 0.282), height Z score (r = - 0.292), ALP concentration (r = - 0.304), lumbar BMD (r = - 0.276), BMD Z score of the lumbar spine and femoral neck (r = - 0.32; r = - 0.27) (all P < 0.05). No significant difference in serum DKK1 concentration was found between OI patients with and without vertebral compression fractures. In patients with spinal deformity (22/62), serum DKK1 concentration was positively correlated with SDI (r = 0.480, P < 0.05). No significant correlation was observed between serum DKK1 concentration and the annual incidence of peripheral fractures, genotype and types of collagen changes in OI children. CONCLUSION The serum DKK1 level was not only significantly elevated in OI children, but also closely correlated to their skeletal phenotype, suggesting that DKK1 may become a new biomarker and a potential therapeutic target of OI.

Clin Radiol 2024; 79:842-850. Abstract
AIM Due to the rarity of lung cancer with cystic imaging manifestations, we explore the clinical features and survival prognosis of such tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS Imaging characteristics were used to categorize 3,556 patients who underwent surgery for isolated primary lung cancer into one of three groups: those with cystic lung cancer (149), solid lung cancer (1,399), and ground-glass lung cancer (1,160). Propensity score matching by sex and age was performed to analyze the differences in clinical characteristics of lung cancer among the three groups and the correlation between clinical characteristics of cystic lesions and progression-free survival (PFS). RESULTS The three groups of patients differed in various aspects, including pathological type, smoking history, tumor stage, type of surgery, histological grading, and PFS (P < 0.05). The results of the multifactorial analysis indicated that lung cancer type, pathological type, lymph node metastasis, tumor stage, and histologic grading were independent prognostic factors for lung cancer (P < 0.05). After comparison, there was a difference in prognosis between cystic lung cancer and ground-glass lung cancer (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The clinical features of cystic lung cancer are significantly different from those of ground-glass lung cancer and solid lung cancer. Cystic lesions are independent influencing factors affecting lung cancer, and the prognosis of cystic lung cancer is worse than that of ground-glass lung cancer.

Abstract
One of the fundamental goals of particle physics is to gain a microscopic understanding of the strong interaction. Electromagnetic form factors quantify the structure of hadrons in terms of charge and magnetization distributions. While the nucleon structure has been investigated extensively, data on hyperons are still scarce. It has recently been demonstrated that electron-positron annihilations into hyperon-antihyperon pairs provide a powerful tool to investigate their inner structure. We present a method useful for hyperon-antihyperon pairs of different types which exploits the cross section enhancement due to the effect of vacuum polarization at the J/ψ resonance. Using the 10 billion J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, this allows a precise determination of the hyperon structure function. The result is essentially a precise snapshot of theΛ ¯ Σ 0 ( Λ Σ ¯ 0 ) transition process, encoded in the transition form factor ratio and phase. Their values are measured to be R = 0.860 ± 0.029(stat.) ± 0.015(syst.), Δ Φ Λ ¯ Σ 0 = ( 1.011 ± 0.094 ( stat. ) ± 0.010 ( syst. ) ) r a d and Δ Φ Λ Σ ¯ 0 = ( 2.128 ± 0.094 ( stat. ) ± 0.010 ( syst. ) ) r a d . Furthermore, charge-parity (CP) breaking is investigated in this reaction and found to be consistent with CP symmetry.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Our objective was to evaluate the efficacy of expanded non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) that includes both trisomies and copy number variants (CNVs) in high-risk twin pregnancies. MATERIAL AND METHODS A prospective, double-blinded cohort study was conducted, enrolling 73 high-risk twin pregnancies characterized by increased risk of genetic disorders due to factors such as increased nuchal translucency, structural anomalies, fetal growth restriction, and other factors associated with chromosomal abnormality. Participants underwent invasive karyotyping and chromosomal microarray analysis, alongside separate expanded NIPT for research purposes. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of expanded NIPT were calculated. RESULTS The cohort included 24 monochorionic and 49 dichorionic twin pregnancies. The median cell-free fetal DNA concentration in expanded NIPT was 16.7% (range 3.86%-49.1%), with a test failure rate of 1.4% (1/73). High-risk findings for trisomy 21/13/18 were identified in five cases (6.8%), Turner syndrome in one case (1.4%), and CNVs indicative of high risk for clinically significant microdeletion/microduplication syndromes (MMS) in ten cases (13.7%). Of these, 56 cases (76.7%) tested NIPT negative, revealing one false-negative for 45, X and five false-negatives for CNVs. Expanded NIPT achieved a detection rate of 100% (5/5) for trisomy 21/13/18 with a false-positive rate of 0% (0/5), a detection rate of 33.3% (1/3) for sex chromosome abnormalities with a false-positive rate of 0% (0/3), and a detection rate of 66.7% (4/6) for MMS with a false-positive rate of 3.0% (2/67). The positive predictive values for trisomy T21/13/18, sex chromosome abnormalities, and known MMS were 100% (5/5), 100% (1/1), and 66.7% (4/6) in the expanded NIPT, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The expanded NIPT demonstrated high detection rates for common trisomies and moderate detection rates for prenatal MMS in high-risk twin pregnancies. Further studies with large sample sizes in low-risk populations are needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Fetuses with single ventricle physiology (SVP) exhibit reductions in fetal cerebral oxygenation, with associated delays in fetal brain growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes. Maternal supplemental oxygen (MSO) has been proposed to improve fetal brain growth, but current evidence on dosing, candidacy and outcomes is limited. In this pilot study, we evaluated the safety and feasibility of continuous low-dose MSO in the setting of SVP. METHODS This single-center, open-label, pilot phase-1 safety and feasibility clinical trial included 25 pregnant individuals with a diagnosis of fetal SVP. Participants self-administered continuous MSO using medical-grade oxygen concentrators for up to 24 h per day from the second half of gestation until delivery. The primary aim was the evaluation of the safety profile and feasibility of MSO. A secondary preliminary analysis was performed to assess the impact of MSO on the fetal circulation using echocardiography and late-gestation cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging. Early outcomes were assessed, including perinatal growth and preoperative brain injury, and neurodevelopmental outcomes were assessed at 18 months using the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development 3rd edition, and compared with those of a contemporary fetal SVP cohort (n = 217) that received the normal standard of care (SOC). RESULTS Among the 25 participants, the median maternal age at conception was 35 years, and fetal SVP diagnoses included 16 with right ventricle dominant, eight with left ventricle dominant and one with indeterminate ventricular morphology. Participants started the trial at approximately 29 + 2 weeks' gestation and self-administered MSO for a median of 16.1 h per day for 63 days, accumulating a median of 1029 h of oxygen intake from enrolment until delivery. The only treatment-associated adverse events were nasal complications that were resolved typically by attaching a humidifier unit to the oxygen concentrator. No premature closure of the ductus arteriosus or unexpected fetal demise was observed. In the secondary analysis, MSO was not associated with any changes in fetal growth, middle cerebral artery pulsatility index, cerebroplacental ratio or head-circumference-to-abdominal-circumference ratio Z-scores over gestation compared with SOC. Although MSO was associated with changes in umbilical artery pulsatility index Z-score over the study period compared with SOC (P = 0.02), this was probably due to initial baseline differences in placental resistance. At late-gestation cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging, MSO was not associated with an increase in fetal cerebral oxygen delivery. Similarly, no differences were observed in neonatal outcomes, including preoperative brain weight Z-score and brain injury, mortality by 18 months of age and neurodevelopmental outcomes at 18 months of age. CONCLUSIONS This pilot phase-1 clinical trial indicates that low-dose MSO therapy is safe and well tolerated in pregnancies diagnosed with fetal SVP. However, our protocol was not associated with an increase in fetal cerebral oxygen delivery or improvements in early neurological or neurodevelopmental outcomes. © 2024 International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Observation of New Charmonium or Charmoniumlike States in B^{+}→D^{*±}D^{∓}K^{+} Decays. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2024; 133:131902. [PMID: 39392986 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.133.131902] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/06/2024] [Accepted: 08/13/2024] [Indexed: 10/13/2024]
Abstract
A study of resonant structures in B^{+}→D^{*+}D^{-}K^{+} and B^{+}→D^{*-}D^{+}K^{+} decays is performed, using proton-proton collision data at center-of-mass energies of sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb^{-1}. A simultaneous amplitude fit is performed to the two channels with contributions from resonances decaying to D^{*-}D^{+} and D^{*+}D^{-} states linked by C parity. This procedure allows the C parities of resonances in the D^{*±}D^{∓} mass spectra to be determined. Four charmonium or charmoniumlike states are observed decaying into D^{*±}D^{∓}: η_{c}(3945), h_{c}(4000), χ_{c1}(4010), and h_{c}(4300), with quantum numbers J^{PC} equal to 0^{-+}, 1^{+-}, 1^{++}, and 1^{+-}, respectively. At least three of these states have not been observed previously. In addition, the existence of the T_{c[over ¯]s[over ¯]0}^{*}(2870)^{0} and T_{c[over ¯]s[over ¯]1}^{*}(2900)^{0} resonances in the D^{-}K^{+} mass spectrum, already observed in the B^{+}→D^{+}D^{-}K^{+} decay, is confirmed in a different production channel.

Abstract
The Heisenberg uncertainty principle dictates that the position and momentum of an object cannot be simultaneously measured with arbitrary precision, giving rise to an apparent limitation known as the standard quantum limit (SQL). Gravitational-wave detectors use photons to continuously measure the positions of freely falling mirrors and so are affected by the SQL. We investigated the performance of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) after the experimental realization of frequency-dependent squeezing designed to surpass the SQL. For the LIGO Livingston detector, we found that the upgrade reduces quantum noise below the SQL by a maximum of three decibels between 35 and 75 hertz while achieving a broadband sensitivity improvement, increasing the overall detector sensitivity during astrophysical observations.

Strong and Weak CP Tests in Sequential Decays of Polarized Σ^{0} Hyperons. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2024; 133:101902. [PMID: 39303247 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.133.101902] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/10/2024] [Revised: 07/16/2024] [Accepted: 08/07/2024] [Indexed: 09/22/2024]
Abstract
The J/ψ, ψ(3686)→Σ^{0}Σ[over ¯]^{0} processes and subsequent decays are studied using the world's largest J/ψ and ψ(3686) data samples collected with the BESIII detector. The parity-violating decay parameters of the decays Σ^{0}→Λγ and Σ[over ¯]^{0}→Λ[over ¯]γ, α_{Σ^{0}}=-0.0017±0.0021±0.0018 and α[over ¯]_{Σ^{0}}=0.0021±0.0020±0.0022, are measured for the first time. The strong CP symmetry is tested in the decays of the Σ^{0} hyperons for the first time by measuring the asymmetry A_{CP}^{Σ}=α_{Σ^{0}}+α[over ¯]_{Σ^{0}}=(0.4±2.9±1.3)×10^{-3}. The weak CP test is performed in the subsequent decays of their daughter particles Λ and Λ[over ¯]. Also for the first time, the transverse polarizations of the Σ^{0} hyperons in J/ψ and ψ(3686) decays are observed with opposite directions, and the ratios between the S-wave and D-wave contributions of the J/ψ, ψ(3686)→Σ^{0}Σ[over ¯]^{0} decays are obtained. These results are crucial to understand the decay dynamics of the charmonium states and the production mechanism of the Σ^{0}-Σ[over ¯]^{0} pairs.

Abstract
A measurement of time-dependent CP violation in D^{0}→π^{+}π^{-}π^{0} decays using a pp collision data sample collected by the LHCb experiment in 2012 and from 2015 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.7 fb^{-1}, is presented. The initial flavor of each D^{0} candidate is determined from the charge of the pion produced in the D^{*}(2010)^{+}→D^{0}π^{+} decay. The decay D^{0}→K^{-}π^{+}π^{0} is used as a control channel to validate the measurement procedure. The gradient of the time-dependent CP asymmetry ΔY in D^{0}→π^{+}π^{-}π^{0} decays is measured to be ΔY=(-1.3±6.3±2.4)×10^{-4}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, which is compatible with CP conservation.

Integrated transcriptomic analysis and machine learning for characterizing diagnostic biomarkers and immune cell infiltration in fetal growth restriction. Front Immunol 2024; 15:1381795. Abstract
Background Fetal growth restriction (FGR) occurs in 10% of pregnancies worldwide. Placenta dysfunction, as one of the most common causes of FGR, is associated with various poor perinatal outcomes. The main objectives of this study were to screen potential diagnostic biomarkers for FGR and to evaluate the function of immune cell infiltration in the process of FGR. Methods Firstly, differential expression genes (DEGs) were identified in two Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets, and gene set enrichment analysis was performed. Diagnosis-related key genes were identified by using three machine learning algorithms (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator, random forest, and support vector machine model), and the nomogram was then developed. The receiver operating characteristic curve, calibration curve, and decision curve analysis curve were used to verify the validity of the diagnostic model. Using cell-type identification by estimating relative subsets of RNA transcripts (CIBERSORT), the characteristics of immune cell infiltration in placental tissue of FGR were evaluated and the candidate key immune cells of FGR were screened. In addition, this study also validated the diagnostic efficacy of TREM1 in the real world and explored associations between TREM1 and various clinical features. Results By overlapping the genes selected by three machine learning algorithms, four key genes were identified from 290 DEGs, and the diagnostic model based on the key genes showed good predictive performance (AUC = 0.971). The analysis of immune cell infiltration indicated that a variety of immune cells may be involved in the development of FGR, and nine candidate key immune cells of FGR were screened. Results from real-world data further validated TREM1 as an effective diagnostic biomarker (AUC = 0.894) and TREM1 expression was associated with increased uterine artery PI (UtA-PI) (p-value = 0.029). Conclusion Four candidate hub genes (SCD, SPINK1, TREM1, and HIST1H2BB) were identified, and the nomogram was constructed for FGR diagnosis. TREM1 was not only associated with a variety of key immune cells but also correlated with increased UtA-PI. The results of this study could provide some new clues for future research on the prediction and treatment of FGR.

Abstract
Using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at center-of-mass energies ranging from 3.80 to 4.95 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20 fb^{-1}, a measurement of Born cross sections for the e^{+}e^{-}→D^{0}D[over ¯]^{0} and D^{+}D^{-} processes is presented with unprecedented precision. Many clear peaks in the line shape of e^{+}e^{-}→D^{0}D[over ¯]^{0} and D^{+}D^{-} around the mass range of G(3900), ψ(4040), ψ(4160), Y(4260), and ψ(4415), etc., are foreseen. These results offer crucial experimental insights into the nature of hadron production in the open-charm region.

Abstract
As a first step in preparing for the return of samples from the Moon by the Artemis Program, NASA initiated the Apollo Next Generation Sample Analysis Program (ANGSA). ANGSA was designed to function as a low-cost sample return mission and involved the curation and analysis of samples previously returned by the Apollo 17 mission that remained unopened or stored under unique conditions for 50 years. These samples include the lower portion of a double drive tube previously sealed on the lunar surface, the upper portion of that drive tube that had remained unopened, and a variety of Apollo 17 samples that had remained stored at -27 °C for approximately 50 years. ANGSA constitutes the first preliminary examination phase of a lunar "sample return mission" in over 50 years. It also mimics that same phase of an Artemis surface exploration mission, its design included placing samples within the context of local and regional geology through new orbital observations collected since Apollo and additional new "boots-on-the-ground" observations, data synthesis, and interpretations provided by Apollo 17 astronaut Harrison Schmitt. ANGSA used new curation techniques to prepare, document, and allocate these new lunar samples, developed new tools to open and extract gases from their containers, and applied new analytical instrumentation previously unavailable during the Apollo Program to reveal new information about these samples. Most of the 90 scientists, engineers, and curators involved in this mission were not alive during the Apollo Program, and it had been 30 years since the last Apollo core sample was processed in the Apollo curation facility at NASA JSC. There are many firsts associated with ANGSA that have direct relevance to Artemis. ANGSA is the first to open a core sample previously sealed on the surface of the Moon, the first to extract and analyze lunar gases collected in situ, the first to examine a core that penetrated a lunar landslide deposit, and the first to process pristine Apollo samples in a glovebox at -20 °C. All the ANGSA activities have helped to prepare the Artemis generation for what is to come. The timing of this program, the composition of the team, and the preservation of unopened Apollo samples facilitated this generational handoff from Apollo to Artemis that sets up Artemis and the lunar sample science community for additional successes.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the corrective effects of a personalized corneal refractive surgery design that retains mild myopia in patients over 40 years old with refractive errors and presbyopia. Methods: A retrospective case series study was conducted, including 60 patients (120 eyes) over 40 years old who underwent corneal refractive surgery at Peking Union Medical College Hospital l from January 2023 to December 2023. The patients were divided into two groups based on their preference: Group A (retained mild myopia) and Group B (fully corrected), with 30 patients (60 eyes) in each group. Preoperative and postoperative visual acuity, subjective refraction, slit-lamp examination, corneal topography, and intraocular pressure were assessed at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months after surgery. The effectiveness and safety indices were calculated based on visual acuity before and after surgery. The National Eye Institute Refractive Quality of Life questionnaire was used to evaluate patient satisfaction and postoperative visual symptoms. Results: There were no significant differences in preoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), spherical equivalent (SE), corneal thickness, and intraocular pressure between the two groups (all P>0.05). At the final follow-up, the proportions of eyes with UDVA≥0.8 and≥1.0 were 93.3% (56/60) and 60.0% (36/60) in Group A, and 100% (60/60) and 83.3% (50/60) in Group B, respectively. The SE was significantly different between Group A [(-0.35±0.52) D] and Group B [(-0.07±0.55) D] (P<0.05). Near visual acuity was better in Group A than in Group B (P<0.05). The effectiveness indices were 0.96±0.23 and 0.99±0.12, and the safety indices were 1.02±0.11 and 1.02±0.07 for Groups A and B, respectively. Both groups had high overall satisfaction, but Group A had higher scores for near vision, reading, and computer screen viewing. Conclusion: The personalized corneal refractive surgery design that retains mild myopia provides good corrective effects for patients over 40 years old with refractive errors, improving patient satisfaction and quality of life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the genetic etiologies underlying agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) and its pregnancy outcomes in the era of next-generation sequencing. METHODS A retrospective analysis was conducted on prospectively collected prenatal ACC cases in which amniocentesis was performed between January 2016 and December 2022. ACC was divided into non-isolated and isolated according to the presence or absence of ultrasound abnormalities. Chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA), karyotyping and exome sequencing (ES) were performed after genetic counseling. Pregnancy outcomes were assessed by pediatric neurosurgeons and were followed up by telephone through their parents. RESULTS Sixty-eight fetuses with ACC were enrolled in this study. CMA detected eight cases with pathogenic copy number variants (CNVs) and all were non-isolated ACC, with a detection rate of 11.8% (8/68). Among the CMA abnormalities, the majority (6/8) were detectable by karyotyping. ES was performed in 26 cases with normal CMA, revealing pathogenic or likely pathogenic gene variations in 12 cases (46.2%, 12/26), involving L1CMA, SMARCB1, PPP2R1A, ARID1B, USP34, CDC42, NFIA and DCC genes. The detection rates of ES in isolated and non-isolated ACC were 40% (6/15) and 54.5% (6/11), respectively. After excluding cases where pregnancy was terminated (56 cases), there were 12 live births, ranging in age from 15 months to 7 years. Of these, 91.7% (11 out of 12) demonstrated normal neurodevelopmental outcomes. Specifically, all five cases with isolated ACC and negative ES results exhibited normal neurodevelopment. The remaining six cases with favorable outcomes were all isolated ACC, among which ES identified variants of DCC and USP34 gene in one each case. The other four cases were CMA-negative and declined ES. CONCLUSIONS We highlight the efficacy of prenatal ES in determining the genetic etiology of ACC, whether isolated or not. Favorable neurodevelopmental outcomes were observed when ACC was isolated and with normal ES results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish a haplotype-based noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) workflow for single-gene recessive disorders that adapt to dizygotic (DZ) twin pregnancies. METHOD Twin pregnancies at risk of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Becker muscular dystrophy, hemophilia B, spinal muscular atrophy, phenylketonuria, and nonsyndromic hearing loss were recruited. For subsequent analysis, capture sequencing targeting highly heterozygotic single nucleotide polymorphism sites was conducted. Paternal-specific alleles were used to calculate the total and individual fetal fractions and determine zygosity. A two-step Bayes Factor model was applied to clarify the complex genomic landscape in the maternal plasma: the first step involved determining whether the twins inherited the same haplotype, and the second step involved estimating their individual genotypes. NIPT results were subsequently confirmed by invasive diagnosis. RESULTS Nine twin pregnancies were recruited, including five DZ and four monozygotic (MZ) twins. The earliest gestational age was 8+0 weeks, and the minimum fetal fraction was 4.6%. Three twin pregnancies were reported with one affected fetus, while the remaining six were reported without affected fetuses. Two dichorionic diamniotic twin pregnancies were confirmed to be MZ twins. The NIPT results were 100% consistent with those of invasive procedures or diagnostic genetic testing after birth. CONCLUSION This study is the first to perform NIPT for single-gene disorders in twin pregnancies and preliminarily confirm its clinical feasibility. Acknowledging the twins' genotypes in the first trimester is valuable as it empowers obstetric care providers and parents to have adequate time for pregnancy management and decision-making.
