Intensified electrochemiluminescence and photoluminescence via supramolecular anion recognition interactions

Herein, intensified electrochemiluminescence (ECL) and photoluminescence (PL) via supramolecular anion recognition interactions are demonstrated. A bisindolylpyrrole derivative with a structure containing two indole groups and 2-hexyl-pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,3(2H,5H)-dione, BIPPD, was designed and synthesized de novo to induce the enhanced ECL and PL emission based on hydrogen bonding interactions with the dihydrogen phosphate anion. Remarkably, the ECL quantum efficiency and PL quantum yield were discovered to increase up to 5.5-fold and 1.5-fold, respectively, via this anion coordination. Dopant PF6 - was found not to form hydrogen bonds, while HSO4 - doping does slightly with the receptor molecule. There was no enhancement in either ECL or PL in both scenarios, revealing great recognition selectivity of the synthesized BIPPD. Mechanistic studies via 1H NMR, ECL, and PL spectra illustrated that the ECL processes varied in the presence and absence of H2PO4 - doping, thus leading to the understanding of enhanced efficiency. The bisindolylpyrrole derivative will find applications in supramolecular and analytical chemistry via controlled hydrogen bonding interactions.

Assessing morinidazole for surgical site infection in class III wounds prevention: a multi-centre, randomized, single-blind, parallel-controlled study

INTRODUCTION

Surgical site infections (SSIs) are significant postoperative risks; antibiotic prophylaxis is crucial due to the presence of anaerobic bacteria. This study investigated the efficacy and safety of a novel nitroimidazole, morinidazole, in SSI reduction in class III wounds, as there is currently a lack of evidence in the existing literature.

METHODS

A multi-centre randomized clinical trial was conducted from December 2020 to October 2022 in the general surgery departments of 12 tertiary hospitals in China, including 459 patients in two treatment groups using morinidazole plus ceftriaxone or ceftriaxone alone. Efficacy and safety were evaluated including SSI incidence, adverse events, and compliance. Statistical analysis employed SAS 9.4 software. Data analysis was performed from February to May 2023.

RESULTS

A total of 440 participants (median (interquartile range, IQR) age, 63.0 (54.0, 70.0) years; 282 males (64.09%); 437 patients were of Han race (99.32%) and were randomized. The experimental group exhibited a significantly lower SSI rate compared with the control group (31 (14.49%) vs 52 (23.01%); risk difference, 1.76%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.08-2.88%; P=0.0224). The superficial incisional site infections revealed a marked reduction in the experimental group (12 (5.61%) vs 31 (13.37%); risk difference, 2.68%; 95% CI 1.34-5.36%; P=0.0042). Non-surgical site infections, severe postoperative complications, and total adverse events showed no statistically significant differences between the groups (P>0.05).

CONCLUSION

The significant decrease in SSI rates and superficial incisional infections demonstrates morinidazole to be a valuable prophylactic antibiotic. Our findings provide valuable insights for clinical practice, where this new-generation nitroimidazole can play a crucial role in SSI prevention.

Synergetic effects and inhibition mechanisms of the polysaccharide-selenium nanoparticle complex in human hepatocarcinoma cell proliferation

BACKGROUND

Active components from natural fungal products have shown promising potential as anti-tumor therapeutic agents. In the search for anti-tumor agents, research to overcome the drawbacks of high molecular weight and low bioavailability of pure polysaccharides, polysaccharide-conjugated selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) has attracted much attention.

RESULTS

A novel polysaccharide-selenium nanoparticle complex was produced, in which SeNPs were decorated with polysaccharide obtained from fermented mycelia broth of Lactarius deliciosus (FLDP). Transmission electron microscope, dynamic light scattering, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were utilized to characterize the FLDP-SeNPs; and human hepatocarcinoma cell line (HepG2) was used to assess growth inhibition efficacy. The FLDP-SeNPs that were prepared had a spherical shape with the smallest mean diameter of 32 nm. The FLDP-SeNPs showed satisfactory dispersibility and stability after combination, demonstrating that a reliable consolidated structure had formed. The results revealed that FLDP-SeNPs had notable growth inhibition effects on HepG2 cells. They reduced the membrane potential of mitochondria significantly, increased the generation of reactive oxygen species, enhanced levels of both Caspase-3 and Caspase-9, and led to the nucleus in a wrinkled form.

CONCLUSION

The FLDP-SeNPs could exert a synergetic toxicity reduction and inhibition enhancement effect on HepG2 cells by inducing early apoptosis, through mitochondria-mediated cytochrome C-Caspases and reactive oxygen species-induced DNA damage pathways. These results indicate that FLDP-SeNP treatment of HepG2 cells induced early apoptosis with synergetic efficacy, showing that FLDP-SeNPs can be useful as natural anti-tumor agents. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Enhancing corannulene chemiluminescence, electrochemiluminescence and photoluminescence by means of an azabora-helicene to slow down its bowl inversion

Aromatic system extension of corannulene (Cor) is a synthetic challenge to access non-planar polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Herein, we report the design and synthesis of azaborahelicene corannulene 1 through hybridization of an azabora[5] helical structure and subsequent luminescence studies. Significant enhancement in chemiluminescence (CL), electroluminescence (ECL) and photoluminescence (PL) is achieved compared to those of pristine Cor. Specifically, hybrid 1 shows a notable augmentation in absolute luminescence quantum efficiencies: 25-fold for CL, up to 23-fold for ECL with BPO as a coreactant, and 30-fold for PL, respectively, compared to those of pristine Cor. Intriguingly, the blue light emission observed in all three luminescence types suggests the presence of a single excited state. As revealed by variable-temperature (VT) 1H NMR experiments, the bowl inversion frequency apparently decelerates by the steric effect of the helix motif in 1, which could contribute to the enhanced luminescent properties by reducing excited energy losses non-radiatively through fewer molecular motions; these enhanced luminescence observations could be categorized alongside the aggregation induced emission (AIE) and crystallization-induced emission (CIE) phenomena. This work not only provides fundamental insights into improved luminescence quantum efficiencies via strategic modulation of the molecular structure and geometry, but the work also reveals Cor's inherent potential to build efficient blue-light emitting materials and devices.

[Identification of potential biomarkers and immunoregulatory mechanisms of rheumatoid arthritis based on multichip co-analysis of GEO database]

OBJECTIVE

To identify the biomarkers for early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) diagnosis and explore the possible immune regulatory mechanisms.

METHODS

The differentially expressed genesin RA were screened and functionally annotated using the limma, RRA, batch correction, and clusterProfiler. The protein-protein interaction network was retrieved from the STRING database, and Cytoscape 3.8.0 and GeneMANIA were used to select the key genes and predicting their interaction mechanisms. ROC curves was used to validate the accuracy of diagnostic models based on the key genes. The disease-specific immune cells were selected via machine learning, and their correlation with the key genes were analyzed using Corrplot package. Biological functions of the key genes were explored using GSEA method. The expression of STAT1 was investigated in the synovial tissue of rats with collagen-induced arthritis (CIA).

RESULTS

We identified 9 core key genes in RA (CD3G, CD8A, SYK, LCK, IL2RG, STAT1, CCR5, ITGB2, and ITGAL), which regulate synovial inflammation primarily through cytokines-related pathways. ROC curve analysis showed a high predictive accuracy of the 9 core genes, among which STAT1 had the highest AUC (0.909). Correlation analysis revealed strong correlations of CD3G, ITGAL, LCK, CD8A, and STAT1 with disease-specific immune cells, and STAT1 showed the strongest correlation with M1-type macrophages (R=0.68, P=2.9e-08). The synovial tissues of the ankle joints of CIA rats showed high expressions of STAT1 and p-STAT1 with significant differential expression of STAT1 between the nucleus and the cytoplasm of the synovial fibroblasts. The protein expressions of p-STAT1 and STAT1 in the cell nuclei were significantly reduced after treatment.

CONCLUSION

CD3G, CD8A, SYK, LCK, IL2RG, STAT1, CCR5, ITGB2, and ITGAL may serve as biomarkers for early diagnosis of RA. Gene-immune cell pathways such as CD3G/CD8A/LCK-γδ T cells, ITGAL-Tfh cells, and STAT1-M1-type macrophages may be closely related with the development of RA.

Clinical efficacy and safety evaluation of Dermatophagoides farinae drops in the treatment of allergic rhinitis with epistaxis

Summary

Background. Epistaxis is frequently observed in allergic rhinitis (AR) patients. However, few studies focus on the outcome of epistaxis with treatment of AR patients. This study aimed to retrospectively analyze the efficacy and safety of AR patients with epistaxis treated with sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT). Methods. A total of 74 patients aged 4-60 years with house dust mite (HDM)-induced AR accompanied by epistaxis and who completed 1 year of SLIT treatment with standard Dermatophagoides farinae (D. farinae) drops were enrolled in this study. The symptom scores, total medication scores (TMS), combined symptom and medication score (CSMS), visual analog scales (VAS), and bleeding score (BS) were assessed, as well as the nasal endoscopic examinations were performed to observe nasal signs. Results. The levels of symptom scores, TMS, CSMS, VAS, and BS at 0.5 year and 1 year of SLIT treatment were significantly lower than those at the baseline (all p less than 0.01). Also, statistical differences were seen in CSMS (p less than 0.05) and VAS (p less than 0.01) between 0.5 year and 1 year. As expected, BS was positively correlated with CSMS (r = 0.617, 95% CI 0.517-0.699) and VAS (r = 0.777, 95% CI 0.719-0.822) at all three time points. Conclusions. SLIT with D. farinae drops was effective and safe for AR patients with epistaxis, resulting in improving the symptoms of rhinitis while relieving the symptoms of epistaxis.

Spectroscopy and absolute quantum efficiency of near-infrared electrochemiluminescence for a macrocyclic palladium complex

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is widely applied as a reliable tool in clinical diagnosis, including immunoassays, cancer biomarker detection, etc. Metal complexes with emission in the near-infrared (NIR) range possess distinct features such as high transmission and minimal tissue auto-absorption, making them versatile for applications in biosensing and other fields. Through ECL spectral studies of an O-linked nonaromatic benzitripyrrin (C^N^N^N) macrocyclic palladium complex (Pd1) with multiple pyrrole structures, we observed emission peaks from the Qx(0,0) and its vibronic Qx(0,1) bands during both photoluminescence (PL) and ECL. Notably, the emission from the Qx(0,1) band was significantly enhanced in the ECL spectrum, demonstrating higher selectivity for near-infrared light at 743 nm. In the ECL annihilation pathway, the appearance of ECL signals showed a strong correlation with the redox processes of the tri-pyrrin structure, revealing a cyclic tri-pyrrin ligand-centered nature with contributions from the metal center. Upon the introduction of tripropylamine (TPrA) and benzoyl peroxide (BPO) coreactants, the ECL signals exhibited enhancements ranging from several hundred to tens of times. Various reaction routes within different coreactant systems are extensively discussed. Additionally, the absolute quantum efficiencies of the Pd1/TPrA coreactant system were determined, showing efficiencies of 0.0032% ± 0.0005% and 0.000074% ± 0.000016% during pulsing and CV scan processes, respectively. This work addresses gaps in the study of palladacycle complexes in ECL and provides insights into the design of NIR luminescent structures that contribute to the fast screening and deep tissue penetration bioimaging techniques.

[Dosimetric analysis of different optimization algorithms for three-dimensional brachytherapy for gynecologic tumors]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the dosimetric difference between manual and inverse optimization in 3-dimensional (3D) brachytherapy for gynecologic tumors.

METHODS

This retrospective study was conducted among a total of 110 patients with gynecologic tumors undergoing intracavitary combined with interstitial brachytherapy or interstitial brachytherapy. Based on the original images, the brachytherapy plans were optimized for each patient using Gro, IPSA1, IPSA2 (with increased volumetric dose limits on the basis of IPSA1) and HIPO algorithms. The dose-volume histogram (DVH) parameters of the clinical target volume (CTV) including V200, V150, V100, D90, D98 and CI, and the dosimetric parameters D2cc, D1cc, and D0.1cc for the bladder, rectum, and sigmoid colon were compared among the 4 plans.

RESULTS

Among the 4 plans, Gro optimization took the longest time, followed by HIPO, IPSA2 and IPSA1 optimization. The mean D90, D98, and V100 of HIPO plans were significantly higher than those of Gro and IPSA plans, and D90 and V100 of IPSA1, IPSA2 and HIPO plans were higher than those of Gro plans (P < 0.05), but the CI of the 4 plans were similar (P > 0.05). For the organs at risk (OARs), the HIPO plan had the lowest D2cc of the bladder and rectum; the bladder absorbed dose of Gro plans were significantly greater than those of IPSA1 and HIPO (P < 0.05). The D2cc and D1cc of the rectum in IPSA1, IPSA2 and HIPO plans were better than Gro (P < 0.05). The D2cc and D1cc of the sigmoid colon did not differ significantly among the 4 plans.

CONCLUSION

Among the 4 algorithms, the HIPO algorithm can better improve dose coverage of the target and lower the radiation dose of the OARs, and is thus recommended for the initial plan optimization. Clinically, the combination of manual optimization can achieve more individualized dose distribution of the plan.

Stable Interfacial Ruthenium Species for Highly Efficient Polyolefin Upcycling

The present polyolefin hydrogenolysis recycling cases acknowledge that zerovalent Ru exhibits high catalytic activity. A pivotal rationale behind this assertion lies in the propensity of the majority of Ru species to undergo reduction to zerovalent Ru within the hydrogenolysis milieu. Nonetheless, the suitability of zerovalent Ru as an optimal structural configuration for accommodating multiple elementary reactions remains ambiguous. Here, we have constructed stable Ru0-Ruδ+ complex species, even under reaction conditions, through surface ligand engineering of commercially available Ru/C catalysts. Our findings unequivocally demonstrate that surface-ligated Ru species can be stabilized in the form of a Ruδ+ state, which, in turn, engenders a perturbation of the σ bond electron distribution within the polyolefin carbon chain, ultimately boosting the rate-determining step of C-C scission. The optimized catalysts reach a solid conversion rate of 609 g·gRu-1·h-1 for polyethylene. This achievement represents a 4.18-fold enhancement relative to the pristine Ru/C catalyst while concurrently preserving a remarkable 94% selectivity toward valued liquid alkanes. Of utmost significance, this surface ligand engineering can be extended to the gentle mixing of catalysts in ligand solution at room temperature, thus rendering it amenable for swift integration into industrial processes involving polyolefin degradation.

Quantification strategy of absolute chemiluminescence efficiency for systems of luminol with hydrogen peroxide

An important feature to be determined in mechanistic studies on chemiluminescence (CL) is its quantum efficiency, which can give significant chemical reaction information on the influence of the reactant structures and reaction conditions. However, most of the previous quantitative measurements of luminescence and quantum efficiencies are complex and incomplete. To overcome the inconvenience and underestimated quantum efficiency in each measurement, we report a simple and highly effective strategy to determine the absolute CL quantum efficiencies for three systems of luminol with hydrogen peroxide by means of a spectrometer along with an integrating sphere. The integrating sphere facilitated collection of all the emitted light and then transferred it to the spectrometer via an optical fiber proportionally. The CL quantum efficiency was determined by taking the ratio of total photons generated in the reaction system to the number of the limiting reactant molecules consumed. Absolute CL efficiencies of three luminol-H2O2 reaction systems with varied reactant concentrations or coreactants were found to be 37 %, 7.0 % and 6.6 % in a time course, which are much higher than those previously reported values of 1.0-1.3 %. Due to our complete photon collection design, a higher absolute CL efficiency can be realized. Furthermore, spooling CL spectra also provided a powerful visualization tool to observe the real-time CL evolution and devolution, allowing the study on kinetics of CL reaction systems. The above investigations are anticipated to promote further development of CL methodologies and their applications.

The Shape Trail Test Is Sensitive in Differentiating Older Adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Culture-neutral Five-minute Test

INTRODUCTION

The Shape Trail Test (STT) was developed based upon the Trail Making Test, as a culture-neutral test for measuring processing speed and mental flexibility. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy and validity of this five-minute test for differentiating individuals with normal cognition (NC), subjective memory impairment (SMI), and mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

METHOD

The study included 210 participants aged 50-80 years, with 70 participants in each group matched for age, education, and gender.

RESULTS

No significant difference in STT measures was found between the NC and SMI groups. In contrast, both the NC and SMI groups exhibited significantly better performance (shorter completion time in STT-A and STT-B and fewer STT-B errors) than the MCI group. No significant group differences were found in STT-A errors. Stepwise regression analysis identified three significant predictors for classifying the MCI group from the NC and/or SMI groups, including the STT-B completion time, the STT-A errors, and the interaction between STT-B completion time and STT-B errors. The composite score of these three predictors demonstrated good discriminatory power for classifying the MCI group from the other groups, with area under the curves (AUCs) of 0.76 - 0.79 (p < 0.001), sensitivities of 78.6% - 80%, and specificities of 60% - 61.4%. However, none of the STT measures or their interactions were significant predictors for differentiating the SMI group from the NC group. Besides, the STT measures were significantly correlated with age, education, and executive function measures.

DISCUSSION

The STT could be a culture- and language-free, reliable test for assessing executive function and a sensitive test for predicting MCI.

Leveraging Deep Neural Networks for Estimating Vickers Hardness from Nanoindentation Hardness

This research presents a comprehensive analysis of deep neural network models (DNNs) for the precise prediction of Vickers hardness (HV) in nitrided and carburized M50NiL steel samples, with hardness values spanning from 400 to 1000 HV. By conducting rigorous experimentation and obtaining corresponding nanoindentation data, we evaluated the performance of four distinct neural network architectures: Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Long Short-Term Memory network (LSTM), and Transformer. Our findings reveal that MLP and LSTM models excel in predictive accuracy and efficiency, with MLP showing exceptional iteration efficiency and predictive precision. The study validates models for broad application in various steel types and confirms nanoindentation as an effective direct measure for HV hardness in thin films and gradient-variable regions. This work contributes a validated and versatile approach to the hardness assessment of thin-film materials and those with intricate microstructures, enhancing material characterization and potential application in advanced material engineering.

Amelioration of Acute Alcoholic Liver Injury via Attenuating Oxidative Damage and Modulating Inflammation by Means of Ursodeoxycholic Acid-Zein Nanoparticles

Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) has been broadly adopted for the clinical treatment of hepatic and biliary diseases; however, its poor water-solubility becomes an obstacle in wide applications. To overcome these challenges, herein, a two-tier UDCA-embedded system of zein nanoparticles (NPs) along with a polyelectrolyte complex was designed under facile conditions. Both the UDCA-zein NPs and their inclusion microcapsules showed a spherical shape with a uniform size. A typical wall plus capsule/core structure was formed in which UDCA-zein NPs distributed evenly in the interior. The UDCA inclusion microcapsules had an encapsulation rate of 67% and were released in a non-Fickian or anomalous transport manner. The bioavailability and efficacy of UDCA-zein NPs were assessed in vivo through the alcoholic liver disease (ALD) mouse model via intragastric administration. UDCA-zein NPs ameliorated the symptoms of ALD mice remarkably, which were mainly exerted through attenuation of antioxidant stress levels. Meanwhile, it notably upregulated the intestinal tight junction protein expression and improved and maintained the integrity of the mucosal barrier effectively. Collectively, with the improvement of bioavailability, the UDCA-zein NPs prominently alleviated the oxidative damage induced by alcohol, modulating the inflammation so as to restore ALD. It is anticipated that UDCA-zein NPs have great therapeutic potential as sustained-nanovesicles in ALD treatment.

Integrated Photochromic-Photothermal Processes for Catalytic Plastic Upcycling

Incorporating high-energy ultraviolet (UV) photons into photothermal catalytic processes may enable photothermal-photochemical synergistic catalysis, which represents a transformative technology for waste plastic recycling. The major challenge is avoiding side reactions and by-products caused by these energetic photons. Here, we break through the limitation of the existing photothermal conversion mechanism and propose a photochromic-photothermal catalytic system based on polyol-ligated TiO2 nanocrystals. Upon UV or sunlight irradiation, the chemically bonded polyols can rapidly capture holes generated by TiO2 , enabling photogenerated electrons to reduce Ti4+ to Ti3+ and produce oxygen vacancies. The resulting abundant defect energy levels boost sunlight-to-heat conversion efficiency, and simultaneously the oxygen vacancies facilitate polyester glycolysis by activating the nucleophilic addition-elimination process. As a result, compared to commercial TiO2 (P25), we achieve 6-fold and 12.2-fold performance enhancements under thermal and photothermal conditions, respectively, while maintaining high selectivity to high-valued monomers. This paradigm-shift strategy directs energetic UV photons for activating catalysts and avoids their interaction with reactants, opening the possibility of substantially elevating the efficiency of more solar-driven catalysis.

Materials for Electrochemiluminescence: TADF, Hydrogen-Bonding, and Aggregation- and Crystallization-Induced Emission Luminophores

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is a rapidly growing discipline with many analytical applications from immunoassays to single-molecule detection. At the forefront of ECL research is materials chemistry, which looks at engineering new materials and compounds exhibiting enhanced ECL efficiencies compared to conventional fluorescent materials. In this review, we summarize recent molecular design strategies that lead to high efficiency ECL. In particular, we feature recent advances in the use of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters to produce enhanced electrochemiluminescence. We also document how hydrogen bonding, aggregation, and crystallization can each be recruited in the design of materials showing enhanced electrochemiluminescence.

[Electroencephalographic microstates in vestibular schwannoma patients with tinnitus]

OBJECTIVE

To explore the biomarkers of tinnitus in vestibular schwannoma patients using electroencephalographic (EEG) microstate technology.

METHODS

The EEG and clinical data of 41 patients with vestibular schwannoma were collected. All the patients were evaluated by SAS, SDS, THI and VAS scales. The EEG acquisition time was 10-15 min, and the EEG data were preprocessed and analyzed using MATLAB and EEGLAB software package.

RESULTS

Of the 41 patients with vestibular schwannoma, 29 patients had tinnitus and 12 did not have tinnitus, and their clinical parameters were comparable. The average global explanation variances of the non-tinnitus and tinnitus groups were 78.8% and 80.1%, respectively. The results of EEG microstate analysis showed that compared with those without tinnitus, the patients with tinnitus had an increased frequency (P=0.033) and contribution (P=0.028) of microstate C. Correlation analysis showed that THI scale scores of the patients were negatively correlated with the duration of microstate A (R=-0.435, P=0.018) and positively with the frequencies of microstate B (R=0.456, P=0.013) and microstate C (R=0.412, P=0.026). Syntax analysis showed that the probability of transition from microstate C to microstate B increased significantly in vestibular schwannoma patients with tinnitus (P=0.031).

CONCLUSION

EEG microstate features differ significantly between vestibular schwannoma patients with and without tinnitus. This abnormality in patients with tinnitus may reflect the potential abnormality in the allocation of neural resources and the transition of brain functional activity.

Profiling H2O2 from single COS-7 cells by means of scanning electrochemical microscopy

We report quantitative determination of extracellular H₂O₂ released from single COS-7 cells with high spatial resolution, using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). Our strategy of depth scan imaging in vertical x-z plane was conveniently utilized to a single cell for obtaining probe approach curves (PACs) to any positions on the membrane of a live cell by simply drawing a vertical line on one depth SECM image. This SECM mode provides an efficient way to record a batch of PACs, and visualize cell topography simultaneously. The H₂O₂ concentration at the membrane surface in the center of an intact COS-7 cell was deconvoluted from apparent O₂, and determined to be 0.020 mM by overlapping the experimental PAC with the simulated one having a known H₂O₂ release value. The H₂O₂ profile determined in this way gives insight into physiological activity of single live cells. In addition, intracellular H₂O₂ profile was demonstrated using confocal microscopy by labelling the cells with a luminomphore, 2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate. The two methodologies have illustrated complementary experimental results of H₂O₂ detection, indicating that H₂O₂ generation is centered at endoplasmic reticula.

Nitrogen- and sulfur-doped graphene quantum dots for chemiluminescence

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), as one of the most promising luminescent nanomaterials, have been receiving increasing attention in various applications. However, it is still a challenge to improve their chemiluminescence (CL) quantum efficiency. Herein, the CL emissions of nitrogen- and sulfur-doped GQDs (NS-GQDs), nitrogen-doped GQDs (N-GQDs) and undoped GQDs synthesized through one-pot high-temperature pyrolysis are investigated in their chemical reactions with bis(2-carbopentyloxy-3,5,6-trichlorophenyl) oxalate (CPPO) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). A bright blue emission, and yellowish green and yellowish white light from NS-GQDs, N-GQDs and GQDs can be observed, respectively, in the mixture solutions with CPPO and H₂O₂. For the first time, spooling CL spectroscopy was used to investigate the CL reaction mechanisms, illuminant decays and the absolute CL efficiencies of these three GQD systems. Compared with the same system of undoped GQDs, it has been found that the NS-GQDs not only present slower illuminant decay, but also display an absolute CL quantum efficiency of 0.01%, 5-fold enhancement, due to the increase in N and S doping for a well-defined band gap energy. Moreover, three peak wavelengths attributed to intrinsic emission at 425 nm, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) at 575 nm and S-doped emissive surface states at 820 nm are observed for the first time in the NS-GQD system. The CL spectrum of N-GQDs displays two emission peaks at 395 and 575 nm attributed to intrinsic emission and AIE, whereas the CL spectrum of undoped GQDs demonstrates 500 nm and 600 nm peak wavelengths attributed to core emission and AIE. Absolute CL quantum efficiencies from these emissions at these various peaks can be determined quantitatively. This study provides guidance on tuning the surface states of GQD for more conducive injection of electrons and holes, facilitating the production of CL emission, which is beneficial for promoting the development of optical, bioassay and energy conversion applications.

Elucidation of an Aggregate Excited State in the Electrochemiluminescence and Chemiluminescence of a Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF) Emitter

The electrochemistry, electrochemiluminescence (ECL), and chemiluminescence (CL) properties of a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitter 4,4'-(1,2-dihydroacenaphthylene-5,6-diyl)bis(N,N-diphenylaniline) (TPA-ace-TRZ) and three of its analogues were investigated. TPA-ace-TRZ exhibits both (a) delayed onset of ECL and (b) long-persistent luminescence, which we have attributed to the formation of an aggregate excited state in excimer or exciplex form. The evidence of this aggregate excited state was consistent across ECL annihilation and coreactant pathways as well as in CL. The absolute ECL efficiency of TPA-ace-TRZ using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as a coreactant was found to be 0.028%, which was 9-fold stronger than the [Ru(bpy)₃]²⁺/BPO reference coereactant system. Furthermore, the absolute CL quantum efficiency of TPA-ace-TRZ was determined to be 0.92%. The performance and flexibility of the TADF emitter TPA-ace-TRZ under these various emissive pathways are highly desirable toward applications in sensing, imaging, and light-emitting devices.

[Treatment of orbital vascular malformations with intralesional bleomycin injection and N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate glue embolization]

Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of bleomycin lavage combined with N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate glue embolization and resection in the treatment of orbital vascular malformations. Methods: It was a retrospective case series study. Patients with orbital vascular malformations diagnosed at the Ophthalmology Division of Chinese PLA General Hospital from January 2018 to October 2021 were included and divided into exophthalmos group and non-exophthalmos group based on whether the patients had postural exophthalmos. Intralesional bleomycin injection and N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate glue embolization were performed. The preoperative and postoperative visual acuity, the dosages of bleomycin and isobutyl cyanoacrylate glue, pathological results, imaging findings and remission rate were recorded and analyzed. The Chi-square test, Wilcoxon signed rank analysis and Mann-Whitney U test were used for statistical analysis. Results: A total of 58 patients (58 eyes)were included, and there were 22 males (37.9%)　and 36 females (62.1%). Nineteen (32.8%) patients had postural exophthalmos, and 39 (67.2%) patients did not suffer postural exophthalmos. The patient's age of the two groups was 39.0 (28.0, 54.5) years vs. 14.0 (5.7, 26.5) years, with a statistically significant difference (Z=-3.96, P<0.001). There was no significant difference in gender, eye laterality, follow-up time and the disease course between the two groups (all P>0.05). During the operation, the dosage of bleomycin was 15 000 (13 500, 15 000) U in the exophthalmos group, and 15 000 (9 000, 16 500) U in the non-exophthalmos group (Z=-0.70, P=0.944). The dosages of N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate glue were 2.8 (1.0, 3.0) ml and 1.7 (1.0, 2.2) ml, respectively, in the two groups, with no significant difference (Z=-1.11, P=0.268). There was no visual impairment in both groups, while the visual acuity in 5 patients without postural exophthalmos was improved postoperatively. The imaging examination results showed no difference in the malformed vascular area before and after the treatment in the exophthalmos group [384.0 (329.0, 458.0) mm² vs. 330.5 (271.6, 356.7) mm²; Z=-1.26, P=0.208], but a significantly decreased area after the treatment in the non-exophthalmos group [960.8 (822.1, 1058.3) mm² vs. 311.6 (164.6, 361.6) mm²; Z=-2.67, P=0.008]. All patients had no obvious local or systemic adverse reactions during the follow-up. The pathology reports showed vascular malformations in all 15 specimens obtained from the exophthalmos group, as well as vascular malformations in 41.0% (16/39) of specimens and venous lymphatic malformations in 59.0% (23/39) of specimens from the non-exophthalmos group. Thirty-nine patients had complete remission (67.2%), 19 patients had partial remission (32.8%), and the effective treatment rate was 100%. Conclusion: Bleomycin lavage combined with N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate glue embolization can achieve good therapeutic effects on orbital vascular malformations.

Nanocluster Transformation Induced by SbF6- Anions toward Boosting Photochemical Activities

The interactions between SbF₆^- and metal nanoclusters are of significance for customizing clusters from both structure and property aspects; however, the whole-segment monitoring of this customization remains challenging. In this work, by controlling the amount of introduced SbF₆^- anions, the step-by-step nanocluster evolutions from [Pt₁Ag₂₈(S-Adm)₁₈(PPh₃)₄]Cl₂ (Pt₁Ag₂₈-Cl) to [Pt₁Ag₂₈(S-Adm)₁₈(PPh₃)₄](SbF₆)₂ (Pt₁Ag₂₈-SbF₆) and then to [Pt₁Ag₃₀Cl₁(S-Adm)₁₈(PPh₃)₃](SbF₆)₃ (Pt₁Ag₃₀-SbF₆) have been mapped out with X-ray crystallography, with which atomic-level SbF₆^- counterion effects in reconstructing and rearranging nanoclusters are determined. The structure-dependent optical properties, including optical absorption, photoluminescence, and electrochemiluminescence (ECL), of these nanoclusters are then explored. Notably, the Pt₁Ag₃₀-SbF₆ nanocluster was ultrabright with a high phosphorescence quantum yield of 85% in N₂-purged solutions, while Pt₁Ag₂₈ nanoclusters were fluorescent with weaker emission intensities. Furthermore, Pt₁Ag₃₀-SbF₆ displayed superior ECL efficiency over Pt₁Ag₂₈-SbF₆, which was rationalized by its increased effectively exposed reactive facets. Both Pt₁Ag₃₀-SbF₆ and Pt₁Ag₂₈-SbF₆ demonstrated unprecedented high absolute ECL quantum efficiencies at sub-micromolar concentrations. This work is of great significance for revealing the SbF₆^- counterion effects on the control of both structures and luminescent properties.
