Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the application of the Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW) to the development of a family-centred intervention for families of children with hearing loss transitioning into early intervention. DESIGN The BCW was used in a mixed methods design to understand the gaps in family-centred service provision and to identify appropriate intervention functions and implementation options to address these gaps. STUDY SAMPLE Families and health professionals participated in different steps of the BCW. RESULTS The qualitative interviews revealed that families required individualised information and support. The quantitative and interview data suggested inconsistencies in the provision of information and support to some families. It was determined that administration of a needs assessment by the support professionals was the most appropriate target behaviour to address this issue. In the analysis of the professionals' capabilities, opportunities, and motivations for administration of a needs assessment, a resource limitation was identified, and therefore, a Minimum Data Set for a Needs Assessment Tool was developed to facilitate the assessment of families' needs during the transition period. CONCLUSIONS This study provided an example of how the BCW could be successfully applied to the design of a family-centred intervention for families of children with hearing loss.

Abstract
PURPOSE The research objectives were to explore the communication needs pertaining to (a) people with primary progressive aphasia (PwPPA); (b) family members of PwPPA; and (c) the different variants of primary progressive aphasia (PPA), from the perspectives of speech-language pathologists (SLPs). METHOD This investigation used a qualitatively driven concurrent mixed methods research design. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews and mixed methods questionnaires with 14 SLPs. Qualitative content analysis of interview and questionnaire data was used to identify codes and categories related to the research objectives. Quantitative analysis of questionnaire data involved single item summaries and cross item tabulations. RESULT Analysis revealed eight categories of communication need pertaining to PwPPA and six pertaining to their family members. Results regarding communication needs according to variant of PPA revealed limited findings. CONCLUSION SLPs perceived several important areas of communication need for PwPPA and their family members, highlighting key clinical implications for proactive communication care across the continuum of care. Future research can build on the current findings and integrate the perspectives of PwPPA and their family members on this topic, to develop interventions and explore models of service delivery to meet their progressive and complex communication needs.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to explore the impact of childhood hearing loss on the family unit and their resulting intervention needs. MATERIALS & METHODS Qualitative descriptive methodology was used, with in-depth interviews analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Four family units of children with hearing loss participated in the study, including parents (n = 5), grandparents (n = 7), and siblings (n = 5). RESULTS Five themes were developed from interview data: (1) the daily grind; (2) we're all in this together; (3) family dynamics; (4) the early intervention experience and (5) personal growth and adaptations. Family members were impacted in multi-faceted ways and identified informational and emotional intervention needs, with an integrative theme highlighting the emotional toll of childhood hearing loss on families. CONCLUSIONS Early intervention services have a crucial role in addressing third-party disability through a multi-disciplinary service delivery model that addresses the needs of all family members, beyond the child with hearing loss.

Abstract
Providing child and family health (CFH) services that meet the needs of young children and their families is important for a child's early experiences, development and lifelong health and well-being. In Australia, families living in regional and rural areas have historically had limited access to specialist CFH services. In 2019, five new specialist CFH services were established in regional areas of New South Wales, Australia. The purpose of this study is to understand the regional families' perceptions and experiences of these new CFH services. A convergent mixed-methods design involving a survey and semi-structured interviews with parents who had used the service was used for this study. Data collected include demographics, reasons for engaging with the service, perception, and experience of the service, including if the service provided was family centred. Triangulation of the quantitative and qualitative analysis uncovered three main findings: (i) The regional location of the service reduced the burden on families to access support for their needs; (ii) providing a service that is family-centred is important to achieve positive outcomes; and (iii) providing a service that is family-centred advances the local reputation of the service, enabling a greater reach into the community. Providing local specialist CFH services reduces the burden on families and has positive outcomes; however, providing services that are family-centred is key.

Abstract
Pain in hospitalised children is common, yet inadequately treated. Electronic medical records (EMRs) can improve care quality and outcomes during hospitalisation. Little is known about how clinicians use EMRs in caring for children with pain. This national cross-sectional survey examined the perceptions of clinician-EMR users about current and potential use of EMRs in children's pain care. One hundred and ninety-four clinicians responded (n = 81, 74% nurses; n = 21, 19% doctors; n = 7, 6% other); most used Epic (n = 53/109, 49%) or Cerner (n = 42/109, 38%). Most (n = 84/113, 74%) agreed EMRs supported their initiation of pharmacological pain interventions. Fewer agreed EMRs supported initiation of physical (n = 49/113, 43%) or psychological interventions (n = 41/111, 37%). Forty-four percent reported their EMR had prompt reminders for pain care. Prompts were perceived as useful (n = 40/51, 78%). Most agreed EMRs supported pain care provision (n = 94/110, 85%) and documentation (n = 99/111, 89%). Only 39% (n = 40/102) agreed EMRs improved pain treatment, and 31% (n = 32/103) agreed EMRs improved how they involve children and families in pain care. Findings provide recommendations for EMR designs that support clinicians' understanding of the multidimensionality of children's pain and drive comprehensive assessments and treatments. This contribution will inform future translational research on harnessing technology to support child and family partnerships in care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sudden onset hearing loss (SOHL) is rare and presents differently to individuals; hence, it is complex to diagnose. The impact on the quality of life (QoL) varies for individuals and their support structure. However, the exploration of research designs is warranted. OBJECTIVES This study explored the lived experiences of adults post-SOHL diagnosis and the impact on the QoL. Facilitators of emotional and social aspects of counselling provided by audiologists post-SOHL diagnosis were established. METHOD This was a convergent parallel research study. Data were collected from the two primary participants and three secondary participants, face-to-face and telephonically. The Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults (HHIA) screening tool and the semi-structured interviews were used for data collection. The data sets were analysed independently, viz. descriptive analysis and thematic analysis, to confirm the impact on the QoL post-SOHL diagnosis. RESULTS The HHIA scores obtained were 84% and 50% for P1 and P2, respectively. Key themes that emerged from the interviews revealed that communication difficulties mostly impacted the QoL, which in turn influenced their mental and social well-being. Aural rehabilitation was perceived as ineffective support, thus the inability to reduce the impact on the QoL post-SOHL diagnosis. CONCLUSION The integrated findings indicated the impact on the QoL post-SOHL diagnosis. Convergent parallel methods should be considered by researchers to understand rare auditory pathologies and their impact on the QoL.Contribution: Person-centred care (PCC) and family-centred care (FCC) are facilitators of counselling that audiologists can employ as QoL management strategies post-SOHL diagnosis.

Abstract
Most paediatric deaths occur in the neonatal period, many of them in neonatal intensive care units after withdrawal of life support or the decision not to initiate new treatments. In these circumstances, discussions with families and decision-making are fundamental elements of the care and attention given to newborn babies. In this context, bioethical deliberation can help us to identify the values at stake, the different courses of action to be taken, and the means to ensure that family-shared decision-making is appropriate to the patient's situation and in accordance with the family's values.

Abstract
Introduction Parental presence at the bedside during a stressful pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission may improve child comfort, reduce parental anxiety, and enable family engagement. We performed this study to identify factors that parents perceive impact their capability, opportunity, and motivation to be at the bedside in PICU. Methods We conducted a qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured interviews based on the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF). We included parents of children admitted to the PICU for at least 24 h at IWK Health in Nova Scotia, Canada. Interviews were coded independently by two researchers using a directed content approach based on the TDF. We generated themes and subthemes, with the subthemes identified as factors impacting parental presence, and assigned TDF domains to each of the subthemes. Results Fourteen primary caregivers (8 mother figures, 6 father figures) participated in 11 interviews. The factors associated with parental presence were captured by 6 themes: Understanding the Medicalized Child; Maintaining the Parent Role; Life Beyond the Hospital; Parental Intrinsic Responses and Coping; Support Structures; and The PICU Environment. Fifty-two barriers and enablers were identified within 13 TDF domains; 10 TDF domains were determined to be relevant to parental presence, which may be used to guide design of future interventions. Participants emphasized the importance of self-care to enable them to remain physically at their child's bedside and to be engaged in their care. Conclusions Parents perceive multiple factors within 6 themes act as barriers or enablers to presence with their critically ill child in the PICU. Guided by relevant TDF domains, interventions may be designed to optimize presence, particularly engaged presence, which may improve health-related outcomes of children and their parents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The F-words Life Wheel (FWLW) approaches child development by hybridizing a holistic model in the F-words for Child Development, and a coaching model in Occupational Performance Coaching, along with a life-flow approach in the Kawa model. We report the impact of the FWLW as experienced by families. METHODS This was a qualitative interview study of parents of children with developmental needs and experts in child development using reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS From 13 interviews, we developed three themes: 1) overwhelming, 2) power rebalance and 3) connectedness. The overwhelming theme addresses how life with developmental needs is challenging, engaging with the health and disability system is difficult and the focus on deficits can lead to a sense of being overwhelmed. The power rebalance theme addresses the transition from professionals calling the shots to giving agency to the child and family. Holistic goal setting empowers parents and children to direct and prioritize therapy, and helps shift from a deficit-focused to a 'can-do' attitude. The connectedness theme addresses the linkages between psychological health, physical health, the extended family and the planet as a whole. CONCLUSIONS The FWLW approach appears to be empowering and motivating for children and families.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe how family members of critically ill patients experienced the COVID-19 visiting restrictions in Sweden. BACKGROUND In Sweden, the response to COVID-19 was less invasive than in many other countries. However, some visiting restrictions were introduced for intensive care units, with local variations. Although there is a growing body of literature regarding healthcare professionals' and family caregivers' perspectives on visiting restriction policies, there may be inter-country differences, which remain to be elucidated. DESIGN This study has a qualitative descriptive design. Focus group interviews with 14 family members of patients treated for severe COVID-19 infection were conducted. The interviews took place via digital meetings during the months after the patients' hospital discharge. Qualitative content analysis was used to interpret the interview transcripts. Reporting of the study followed the COREQ checklist. RESULTS Two categories-dealing with uncertainty and being involved at a distance-described family members' experiences of coping with visiting restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. These restrictions were found to reduce family members' ability to cope with the situation. Communication via telephone or video calls to maintain contact was appreciated but could not replace the importance of personal contact. CONCLUSIONS Family members perceived that the visiting restriction routines in place during the COVID-19 pandemic negatively influenced their ability to cope with the situation and to achieve realistic expectations of the patients' needs when they returned home. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE This study suggests that, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the visiting restrictions were experienced negatively by family members and specific family-centred care guidelines need to be developed for use during crises, including the possibility of regular family visits to the ICU. PATIENT AND PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION None in the conceptualisation or design of the study.

Abstract
AIM We investigated the historical origins of developmental care for newborn infants using Reference Publication Year Spectroscopy (RPYS), an innovative method of bibliometric analysis. METHODS A Web of Science search query that combined infant and intervention-related synonyms was performed on 2 February 2022. RPYS analysis was performed on this dataset to identify the most referenced historical publications for developmental care in newborn infants. Median deviation analysis identified the peak publication years, including the most cited historical references. Landmark publications were defined as those belonging to the top 10% of the most frequently referenced publications for at least 20 years. RESULTS The RPYS peaks showed an early phase (1936-1986), during which infant development was studied and analysed, leading to a conceptualisation of developmental care for newborn infants. The following years (1987-2020), showed an explosion of interest in developmental care and highlighted two main programmes. The Neonatal Individualized Developmental Care Assessment Program (NIDCAP) and the Infant Health and Development Program (IHDP) inspired numerous publications during those years, which strove to demonstrate evidence of their clinical benefits. CONCLUSION Developmental care has become increasingly important, thanks to the implementation of NIDCAP and IHDP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Collaboration between therapists and parents of children with developmental disabilities is a key element of family-centred care. In practice, collaboration appears to be challenging for both parents and therapists. This systematic review aims to make explicit how therapists can optimise their collaboration with parents of young children with developmental disabilities, according to the perspectives of parents and therapists. METHODS A systematic review was conducted using the following databases: Medline (PubMed), CINAHL (OVID) and PsychINFO (OVID). Those papers were selected, which focused on collaboration using a two-way interaction between therapists and parents, exploring the perspectives of therapists and/or parents of children between 2 and 6 years. Papers needed to be published in English or Dutch between 1998 and July 2021. Included papers were synthesised using a qualitative analysis approach by two researchers independently. Results sections were analysed line-by-line, and codes were formulated and discussed by all authors. Codes were aggregated, resulting in a synthesis of specific collaboration strategies in combined strategy clusters. RESULTS The search generated 3439 records. In total, 24 papers were selected. Data synthesis resulted in an overview of specific strategies organised into five clusters: (1) continuously invest time in your collaboration with parents, (2) be aware of your important role in the collaboration with parents, (3) tailor your approach, (4) get to know the family and (5) empower parents to become a collaborative partner. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review resulted in an overview of concrete strategies for therapists to use in their collaboration with parents of children with developmental disabilities. The strategies formulated enable therapists to consciously decide how to optimise their collaboration with each individual parent. Making these strategies explicit facilitates change of practice from therapist-led and child-centred towards family-centred care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Promoting self-care is the core response strategy of the global health system to the burden of stroke. Although self-care in stroke represents a dyadic phenomenon, the dyadic self-care experience of stroke survivors and their caregivers is often overlooked in clinical practice. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to explore the dyadic self-care experience of stroke survivors and their caregivers. DESIGN A descriptive qualitative design was used to conduct the study. RESULTS The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research was used for study reporting. A total of 21 stroke survivor-caregiver dyads were recruited for this study between May 2022 and September 2022. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. In this study, four themes were identified: (1) poor relationship quality of the dyads, (2) dyadic incongruence in managing stroke, (3) a slow and tiring dyadic self-care process and (4) happy cooperation in coping with dyadic self-care. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Healthcare professionals should give greater consideration to the contradictions and disparities that may arise between stroke survivors and caregivers during the self-care process. It is crucial for them to provide personalized and tailored support and interventions that can assist these individuals in achieving a more optimal balance in their dyadic self-care. PATIENT/PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION Patients were involved in the formulation of interview questions for this study. No members of the public were involved in this study.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to explore nurses' experiences of providing family-centred care in the postresuscitation period. DESIGN An exploratory-descriptive qualitative design was used. METHODS In this qualitative study, in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 nurses in three educational hospitals. There were six participants who completed follow-up interviews to resolve questions generated during initial interviews. Data were analysed using conventional content analysis. RESULTS Five main categories were extracted: continuous monitoring, facilitation of attendance, involvement in care, informing and emotional support. Despite the lack of organizational policies and guidelines, nurses explained how they work to provide family-centred care for families, especially those they assessed as having less possibility of aggressive behaviour and those with a better understanding of their loved one's condition. To provide postresuscitation family-centred care, nurses facilitated family attendance, involved them in some basic nursing care, and provided information and emotional support to the family members. CONCLUSION Nurses attempted to follow the basic principles of family-centred care in the postresuscitation period. However, to improve the provision of care by nurses, it is necessary to embed family-centred care principles in institutional policies and guidelines and to conduct training for nurses. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION Iranian nurses are interested in engaged families in the postresuscitation period. Abstract
AIM We evaluated the effects of a family-centred clinical care pathway and case management programme on short-term clinical outcome in a cohort of very low-birth weight (VLBW) infants. METHODS The programme, named NeoPAss, was developed at the Department of Neonatology Children's hospital Passau in 2013. Short-term outcomes of infants were compared to matched controls from the Bavarian neonatology surveillance database before (n = 111; 2008-2012) and after implementation (n = 170; 2014-2017). RESULTS After implementation the rate of late-onset sepsis was significantly lower (2.5% vs. 10.7%, p = 0.005) and the length of stay was significantly shorter (VLBW 28 to 31 weeks' gestational age (GA) 47.5 vs. 53.1 days, p = 0.047; <28 weeks' GA 79.4 vs. 91.9 days, p = 0.007) in the intervention group compared to controls. Infants were discharged with significantly lower weight (mean 2351 vs. 2539 g, p = 0.013). There was no statistically significant difference in the rate of intraventricular haemorrhage (3.7% vs. 8.2%), necrotizing enterocolitis (0.6% vs. 1.9%) and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (0% vs. 6.9%). CONCLUSION Our data confirm that of other studies demonstrating a beneficial effect of family-centred care programmes and provides evidence that structured parental involvement is not associated with increased risk of infection in a VLBW cohort.

Abstract
From a public health standpoint, a stringent visitation policy was necessary during the COVID-19 pandemic, but it had unforeseen communicative and emotional health consequences for family members. This study explored family members' experiences regarding implementing a restricted visitation policy when a patient was admitted with COVID-19 at public hospitals in the Vhembe district. Researchers used an exploratory, descriptive, and contextual qualitative technique. Twelve family members made up the population. Unstructured telephone interviews were used to obtain the data, and open coding was used to analyse data. Ethics were consistently followed. Before taking part, participants provided verbal informed consent, acknowledging that they could withdraw from the study if necessary. Three themes emerged: inadequate measures for temporary communication channels and techniques, the mental health effects of COVID-19 admission, and poor/lack of standardised visitation policy during the COVID 19-pandemic. There was a need to balance safety from contracting COVID-19 infection and promoting family-centred care. Virtual visits through telecommunication solutions could reduce fear and anxiety as the family could be updated on the progress of the hospitalised relative. Alternatively, hospital managers must allocate a dedicated person in the unit to update families when they call and enquire about the conditions.

Abstract
PURPOSE To better understand and visualise how and why mothers' and service providers' expectations for therapy can change over time spanning their journeys and careers in the paediatric rehabilitation system. METHODS Narrative analysis was used to construct two parallel collective stories that illustrate and explain phases and turning points of developing expectations. Five mothers and nine service providers participated in interviews discussing their expectations when new and more experienced with therapy. RESULTS Each collective story had five chapters illustrating how expectations became more relational, controllable, and informed. For mothers, the chapters were: (1) expecting therapy to be a saviour; (2) being turned away and alone; (3) expecting to advocate from necessity; (4) finding new solutions in the environment; and (5) expecting to combine mother and service provider expertise. For service providers, the chapters were: (1) expecting to rescue and fix; (2) searching for an alternative sense of professional worth; (3) expecting to lose control; (4) being the authentic self before expected self; and (5) expecting the unexpected. CONCLUSIONS Mothers' experiences with feeling alone and learning ways to modify their child's environments, and service providers' experiences with feeling inadequate and embracing authenticity, were essential to the developmental trajectories of expectations.Implications for Rehabilitation:Mapping expectations for therapy on a line graph shaped as a wave shows promise in reflecting the developmental trajectory of mothers' and service providers' expectations over time.Service providers should become aware of how to work with three distinct groups of mothers as determined by the phase of expectations for therapy they are currently experiencing (i.e., hyped, disillusioned, or enlightened).Therapy programmes can optimise expectations for therapy through redesigns that emphasise elements of networking, self-compassion, ethics, and authenticity.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To systematically review interventions and outcomes regarding family participation in essential care in adult intensive care units. BACKGROUND Patients and relatives may benefit from family participation in essential care activities. DESIGN An integrative literature review. METHODS The following databases were systematically searched from inception to January 25, 2021: PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, Cochrane, Web of Science and reference lists of included articles. Studies were included when reporting on family participation in essential care activities in intensive care including interventions and outcomes. Quality of the studies was assessed with the Kmet Standard Quality Assessment Criteria. Interventions were assessed, using the TIDieR framework. Data were extracted and synthesised narratively. RESULTS A total of 6698 records were screened, and 322 full-text studies were assessed. Seven studies were included, describing an intervention to support family participation. Four studies had a pretest-posttest design, two were pilot feasibility studies and one was observational. The quality of the studies was poor to good, with Kmet-scores: 0.50-0.86 (possible score: 0-1, 1 being the highest). Five studies offered various essential care activities. One study provided sufficient intervention detail. Outcome measures among relatives varied from mental health symptoms to satisfaction, supportiveness, comfort level and experience. Two studies measured patient outcomes: delirium and pressure ulcers. Among ICU healthcare providers, perception, comfort level and experience were assessed. Since outcome measures varied, only narrative synthesis was possible. Family participation is associated with a reduction of anxiety and PTSD symptoms. CONCLUSION Intervention descriptions of family participation in essential care activities are generally inadequate and do not allow comparison and replication. Participation of relatives was associated with a significant reduction in mental health symptoms. Other outcome measures varied, therefore, the use of additional outcome measures with validated measurement instruments should be considered. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE The review contributed further insight into interventions aiming at family participation in essential care activities in the intensive care unit and their outcomes. Abstract
PURPOSE Family-centred service is considered best practice in paediatric acquired brain injury (ABI) rehabilitation. However, there is no universal model to guide clinicians and services in implementing this approach with a lack of research evidence informed by the lived experience of families. This study explored experiences of family-centred service during rehabilitation from the perspectives of parents/caregivers, siblings, and children/adolescents with ABI. MATERIALS AND METHODS Semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants from eight families, and included 10 parents/caregivers, five siblings, and four children/adolescents with moderate to severe ABI. Interview transcripts and additional data were analysed using constructivist grounded theory methods. RESULTS Two themes and five sub-themes were developed: (1) Working together as a team: Valuing clinicians' expert knowledge; Doing rehabilitation together; and Sharing family knowledge; and (2) Navigating rehabilitation as a family: Recognising family needs; Juggling family life; and Making rehabilitation work for the family. Participants reflected on the centrality of the child/adolescent with ABI during rehabilitation, and the ways that family needs, life, and involvement in rehabilitation change over time. CONCLUSIONS These findings highlight the importance of clinicians actively seeking to understand families' unique contexts, needs, and priorities during rehabilitation through two-way information sharing with families. Through developing a greater understanding of families' unique contexts, clinicians can be better placed to tailor rehabilitation according to their unique circumstances and needs.Implications for rehabilitationRehabilitation involves active collaboration between families and clinicians that is responsive to changing needs over time.Family involvement in rehabilitation is shaped by family life, and families have unique needs following paediatric acquired brain injury.It is important that clinicians strive to develop an understanding of families' unique needs, values, preferences, and lives to determine how to best support and involve them in rehabilitation.

Abstract
AIMS To describe nurses' perceptions of family nursing practice and to explore the influence of their perceptions of the benefits, barriers and activities of family engagement in care on family nursing practice. DESIGN A cross-sectional correlational study. METHODS In total, 460 nurses from two tertiary hospitals in the central region of Uganda participated. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected between August 2020 and January 2021 using the Family Nursing Practice Scale. Analyses included descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson correlation, analysis of variance and ordinal logistics regression. Quantitative content analysis was carried out on the textual data. RESULTS Nurses who perceived that family engagement in care improves patient and family outcomes were more likely to rate family nursing practice highly. Perceived barriers to family engagement in care particularly time constraints, work overload and family-related conflicts have a negative and significant influence on family nursing practice. Nurse characteristics such as education, usual shift pattern and personal experience of having a family member in hospital are significantly associated with family nursing practice; nurses who work morning shifts were likely to report higher family nursing practice. CONCLUSION The study reveals that several parameters (perceived barriers, perceived benefits and nurse characteristics) influence nursing practice with families. Thus, bearing in mind the diversity of healthcare contexts, the findings show that multiple interacting factors are important for advancing family nursing interventions and practice. IMPACT Probabilistic factor-specific predictions of nursing practice with families are provided in this study - this addresses a gap in the evidence regarding the elements that should be optimized when designing well-informed policies and interventions to advance family nursing practice. A comparison of results in the literature with the present study's findings suggests a need to broaden the scope and context perspective in future research and broaden the understanding of how nurses´ perceptions influence family engagement in care. REPORTING METHOD The study adheres to the STROBE reporting guidelines. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION Family members/caregivers were involved in the design of the study particularly in assessment of validation of the tools used in the study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There is mounting evidence for implementing family-centred care (FCC) in adult audiology services, however FCC is not typically observed in adult clinical practice. This study implemented an intervention to increase family member attendance and involvement within adult audiology appointments. DESIGN The study involved a mixed method design over three key phases: Standard Care, Intervention I (increasing family member attendance), and Intervention II (increasing family member involvement). STUDY SAMPLE Staff from four private audiology clinics within one organisation participated in the intervention. Data was collected from different clients in each phase (n = 27 Standard Care, n = 30 Intervention I, and n = 23 Intervention II). RESULTS Family member attendance increased from 26% of appointments in Standard Care to 40% at Intervention I, and 48% at Intervention II. Family member involvement also showed improvement on some measures (video analysis) although talk time did not significantly increase. Significant improvements in client satisfaction with services were found (Net Promoter Score and Measure of Processes of Care). CONCLUSION The implementation of FCC in audiology clinics needs to be an ongoing, whole-of-clinic approach, including staff in all roles. Increasing family member attendance at adult audiology appointments can lead to benefits to client satisfaction with services.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To explore the perceptions of family-centred care among nurses and the family members of hospitalised children and investigate the facilitators of and barriers to the implementation of family-centred care in Malawi. BACKGROUND In Malawi, approximately 34% of children have long-term illnesses that require hospitalisation. Family-centred care ensures that the delivery of healthcare is grounded in partnerships between healthcare providers, patients and their families, which can improve the psychological well-being of families. However, there is lack a good understanding of how families and nurses perceive this concept, its facilitators and the barriers. DESIGN This was an exploratory qualitative study. Data were analysed deductively and inductively using the five-step qualitative content analysis method. METHODS Twenty-nine nurses and 31 families were recruited. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured and face-to-face individual interviews. The study was reported using the COREQ checklist. RESULTS Both nurses and families of hospitalised children recognised the importance of nurse-family partnerships in family-centred care. Four themes emerged as follows: Perceptions of family-centred care, elements of family-centred care, facilitators of family-centred care and barriers to family-centred care. Specific information to families and the religious beliefs of families were identified as important facilitator and barrier to family-centred care, respectively. CONCLUSION The implementation of family-centred care is promising in Malawi, as it is positively perceived by nurses and families, and its implementation is consistent with the Institute for Patient and Family-Centred Care Framework. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Our findings present the best practices, gaps and challenges in the context of a low-income country regrading implementation of family-centred care. Education programmes on family-centred care are crucial for sustaining the current gains.

Abstract
PURPOSE There is growing emphasis on the importance of involving families in all aspects of the early speech-language pathology intervention process, however, both speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and families have reported that this can be challenging. To better understand how SLPs work together with families in intervention, this study aimed to (a) explore what SLPs do to support families to be actively involved in intervention, both inside and outside sessions, and (b) explore the perspectives of families regarding how SLPs supported their active involvement. METHOD Video-reflexive ethnography (VRE) was used to explore engagement with 21 matched SLP-family dyads in early intervention services. Up to three intervention appointments for each participating family were video recorded. Short video segments were selected and played to participants in individual semi-structured interviews where participants were invited to reflect on the interactions captured (i.e. "video-reflexive sessions"). Interview data were analysed using template analysis. RESULT Participants reported that SLPs supported families to be actively involved in sessions by (1) planning to involve families; (2) setting expectations; (3) modelling and teaching strategies; (4) inviting families to "have a go"; (5) providing feedback; and (6) problem solving together. Participants also reported that families were supported to be involved outside sessions when SLPs: (1) got them to practice in sessions; (2) made home practice achievable and provided resources; (3) asked about home practice; (4) linked home practice to progress; and (5) helped other family members get involved. CONCLUSION The results of this study provide an explicit understanding of how SLPs can support families to take an active role in early intervention, and support the importance of a reflective and individualised approach to supporting engagement.

Abstract
AIM To assess the feasibility and applicability of a standardized programme to facilitate family participation in essential care activities in the intensive care unit. DESIGN Pilot study with a cross-sectional survey design. METHODS A standardized programme to facilitate family participation in essential nursing care activities was implemented in intensive care units of three hospitals in the Netherlands from November 2018 until March 2019. The feasibility and applicability of the programme were assessed with surveys of the patients, relatives and healthcare providers. RESULTS Three intensive care units successfully implemented the standardized programme. Three patients, ten relatives and 37 healthcare providers responded to the surveys. Patients appreciated family participation and recognized that their relatives liked to participate. Relatives appreciated being able to do something for the patient (80%) and to participate in essential care activities (60%). The majority of relatives (60%) felt they had sufficient knowledge and skills to participate and did not feel obliged nor uncomfortable. Healthcare providers felt they were trained adequately and motivated to apply family participation; application was perceived as easy, clear and relatively effortless according to the majority. According to 68% of the healthcare providers, most relatives were perceived to be capable of learning to participate in essential care activities. Some healthcare providers felt uncertain about the patient's wishes regarding family participation, with some indicating the behaviours of relatives and patients discouraged them from offering family participation. Use of a standardized programme to facilitate family participation in essential care activities in the intensive care unit seems feasible and applicable as determined by relatives and healthcare providers.

Abstract
AIM Investigating parent satisfaction with care is important to guide quality development. In this study, we translated and validated a Danish version of the empowerment of parents in the intensive care - neonatology (EMPATHIC-N) questionnaire to determine validity in Danish contexts. METHOD A psychometric study design was applied. Translation was performed according to recommended international standards. Confirmatory factor analyses including standardised factor loadings, Cronbach's α reliability estimates, congruent validity and non-differential validity testing were applied. The study was performed from June 2017 to November 2019 at a 33-bed level IV neonatal intensive care unit. RESULTS Participants were 311 parents (response rate = 42,8%). Confirmative factor analyses disclosed a moderate model fit of the instrument with Comparative Fit Index (CFI) values of 0.83-0.92. Cronbach's α showed good reliability (0.82-0.93). Congruent validity showed good positive correlations (0.48-0.71) between the instrument domains and four overall satisfaction indicators. In search of improved model fit, a version including 27 items was tested. This version showed a better model fit with CFI values of 0.92-0.99 and satisfactory Cronbach's α values. CONCLUSIONS Model fit for the Danish full EMPATIC-N was moderate. The shorter version showed better psychometric properties.
