Abstract
Conjugated polymer extraction (CPE) has been shown to be a highly effective method to isolate high-purity semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (sc-SWCNTs). In both literature reports and industrial manufacturing, this method has enabled enrichment of sc-SWCNTs with high purity (≥99.9%). High selectivity is typically obtained in nonpolar aromatic solvents, yet polar solvents may provide process improvements in terms of yield, purity and efficiency. Using an amphiphilic fluorene-alt-pyridine conjugated copolymer with hydrophilic side chains, we have investigated the enrichment of sc-SWCNTs in polar solvents. Various conditions such as polymer/SWCNT ratio, solvent polarity, solvent dielectric constant as well as polymer solubility and SWCNT dispersibility were explored in order to optimize the purity and yield of the enriched product. Herein, we provide insights on CPE by demonstrating that a conjugated polymer having a hydrophobic backbone and hydrophilic oligo(ethylene oxide) side chains provides near full recovery (95%) of sc-SWCNTs using a multiextraction protocol. High purity is also obtained, and differences in chiral selectivity compared to analogous hydrophobic systems were confirmed by optical absorption and Raman spectroscopy as well as photoluminescence excitation mapping. Taking into consideration the solvent dielectric constant, polarity index as well as polymer solubility and SWCNT dispersibility provides a better understanding of structure-property effects on sc-SWCNT enrichment. The resulting hydrophilic SWCNT dispersions demonstrate long-term colloidal stability, making them suitable for ink formulation and high-performance thin-film transistors fabrication.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the incidence of peri-anesthesia allergy in a tertiary teaching hospital. METHODS This was a retrospective cohort study. Patients who received anesthesia in operation rooms at Peking University First Hospital from January 2012 to April 2017 were enrolled. Researchers reviewed all the patients' electronic records and screened suspect allergy cases. Allergy was diagnosed according to the definition in Consensus on Management of Perioperative Allergy (China) and Scandinavian Clinical Practice Guidelines on the Diagnosis, Management and Follow-up of Anaphylaxis during Anesthesia. After obtaining the electronic records, two researchers began to screen and supplement missing data according medical records independently, then they checked out each other's data. The final data were reviewed by another two researchers. We collected the patients' basic characteristics, surgery type, anesthesia type, peri-anesthesia use of drugs, prognosis and other data. Univariate logistic regression was employed to screen potential factors of allergy. Factors with statistical significance (P<0.05) in univariate Logistic regression were entered into multivariate Logistic regression to identify independent risk factors of allergy. RESULTS In the study, 106 074 patients entered final statistic analysis. The incidence of peri-anesthesia allergy was about 1.5/1 000 (156/106 074). The incidence of Grades I, II and III allergy was 64.1% (100/156), 30.1% (47/156), and 5.8% (9/156) respectively. Multivariate logistic regression showed 5 independent risk factors of allergy including history of allergy (OR=6.836, 95%CI: 4.461-10.474, P<0.001), intraoperative use of sufentanil (OR=1.993, 95%CI: 1.228-3.232, P=0.005), intraoperative use of cis-atracuronium (OR=2.495, 95%CI: 1.599-3.893, P<0.001), intraoperative infusion of antibiotics (OR=2.005, 95%CI: 1.375-2.924, P<0.001) and frozen fresh plasma (OR=3.055, 95%CI: 1.842-5.068, P<0.001). CONCLUSION The incidence of peri-anesthesia allergy is high and further attempt is needed to establish standard operation process of diagnosis and treatment of allergy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) often have multiple comorbidities. Psychiatric disorders in this population have been poorly studied in developing countries. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in adults with ID and whether comorbid psychiatric disorders were associated with health service utilisation. METHODS We obtained data from the Second National Sample Survey on Disability, conducted in 31 provinces of China and selected a subsample of 13 631 adults aged 18 years and above with ID. ID were defined by intelligence quotient score under 70, deficits in two or more adaptive behaviours and age of onset under 18 years. Psychiatric disorders were identified according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision. Logistic regressions were used for data analyses. RESULTS The prevalence of psychiatric disorders in adults with ID was 16.7%. The most prevalent type of psychiatric disorder was dementia. Older adults, females, being minorities, urban residents, being literate, low-income groups and having severe ID, were associated with elevated risk of psychiatric disorder among adults with ID. Compared with individuals without psychiatric disorders, those with comorbid psychiatric disorders were more likely to use medical service and less likely to use rehabilitation service. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of psychiatric disorder in adults with ID was strikingly higher than that in the general population. Health service utilisation among Chinese adults with ID remained a big challenge. There is a possibility of diagnostic overshadowing by local clinicians, which may have resulted in overdiagnosis of dementia and underdiagnosis of common mental disorders. This study informs further investigations regarding common mental disorders among people with ID and has implications for public health strategies and health policies to meet health service need for this population.

Abstract
We demonstrate a 1340 nm mode-locked Bismuth (Bi)-doped fiber laser without any saturable absorber. The effect of pump power on pulse width is studied, and a variation from 1.5 to 3 ns is reported. The output of the mode-locked Bi-doped fiber laser is further amplified using a master oscillator power amplifier configuration, and a peak power of 1.15 W is achieved. Soliton bunching is observed, and a true pulse width of 1.2 ps is reported from the measured autocorrelation trace. Stable operation of the mode-locked laser is verified from the radio-frequency spectrum with a fundamental repetition rate of 6.3 MHz, and SNR of 65 dB.

Abstract
Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease known for its high susceptibility to environmental exposure. Inadvertent inhalation of engineered or incidental nanomaterials is a concern for human health, particularly for those with underlying disease susceptibility. In this review we provide a comprehensive analysis of those studies focussed on safety assessment of different nanomaterials and their unique characteristics on asthma and allergic airway disease. These include in vivo and in vitro approaches as well as human and population studies. The weight of evidence presented supports a modifying role for nanomaterial exposure on established asthma as well as the development of the condition. Due to the variability in modelling approaches, nanomaterial characterisation and endpoints used for assessment in these studies, there is insufficient information for how one may assign relative hazard potential to individual nanoscale properties. New developments including the adoption of standardised models and focussed in vitro and in silico approaches have the potential to more reliably identify properties of concern through comparative analysis across robust and select testing systems. Importantly, key to refinement and choice of the most appropriate testing systems is a more complete understanding of how these materials may influence disease at the cellular and molecular level. Detailed mechanistic insight also brings with it opportunities to build important population and exposure susceptibilities into models. Ultimately, such approaches have the potential to more clearly extrapolate relevant toxicological information, which can be used to improve nanomaterial safety assessment for human disease susceptibility.

Abstract
IL-37, a newly found anti-inflammatory cytokine of the IL-1 family, has both extracellular and intracellular functions. Accumulating evidences indicate that it is also involved in tumor progression. However, the mechanism and its intracellular target are unclear. In this study, clinical data from 84 patients showed that loss or reduced expression of IL-37 in lung adenocarcinoma tissues was significantly associated with tumor metastasis. We further provided evidence that IL-37 inhibited effectively tumor metastasis in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, we uncovered a novel mechanism by which IL-37 suppressed tumor cell migration via its intracellular mature form (amino acids 46-218). Intracellular mature form of IL-37, but not its extracellular form, markedly inhibited migration of multiple kinds of tumor cells through inhibiting Rac1 activation. Mechanistically, intracellular mature IL-37 directly bound to the CAAX motif in the C-terminal hypervariable region of Rac1, and then inhibited Rac1 membrane translocation and subsequent downstream signaling. Our research identifies intracellular mature IL-37 as a novel endogenous inhibitor of Rac1. Given the crucial roles of Rac1 in tumor angiogenesis and metastasis, intracellular mature IL-37 might serve as a potential strategy for the control of Rac1 activity and tumor progression.

Abstract
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) treatment is challenging due to inefficacy and adverse effects of current medications. Probiotic treatment has been shown to promote bone metabolism, reduce pain and inflammatory responses of age-related musculoskeletal disorders, including OA. We aimed to investigate the effect of probiotic Lactobacillus casei Shirota (LcS) on patients with knee OA. 537 patients with knee OA were enrolled in this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, who were randomised to receive skimmed milk containing either LcS or placebo daily for 6 months. Primary outcome was defined as changes in WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index) and VAS (visual analog scale) scores. Secondary outcome was defined as changes in serum levels of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). After 6 months of treatment, both WOMAC and VAS scores were significantly improved in the LcS groups of patients compared to the placebo group. Serum levels of hs-CRP were also significantly lower in patients receiving LcS than placebo. Strong linear correlations were observed between serum hs-CRP levels and WOMAC and VAS scores. LcS consumption could serve as a novel therapeutic option in the clinical management of knee OA, improving treatment outcome likely through reducing serum hs-CRP levels.

Abstract
Amanita exitialis is a lethal mushroom found in China. Knowledge regarding taxonomic characterization, toxin detection, general poisoning conditions, clinical manifestations, laboratory examinations, and clinical treatments for this species is currently lacking. We investigated three A. exitialis mushroom poisoning cohorts in Yunnan Province in 2014 and 2015, involving 10 patients. Mushroom samples were identified by morphological and molecular studies. Ultra performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry was used to detect the peptide toxins in the mushroom samples. Epidemiological information, clinical data, and results of laboratory examinations were collected and analyzed. The mushroom samples were all identified as A. exitialis. The average toxin concentration decreased from the cap to the stipe to the volva, and the average concentration of the peptide toxins decreased in the order of α-amanitin > phallacidin > β-amanitin > γ-amanitin. The latency period between ingestion and the onset of symptoms was 13.9 ± 2.1 h, and the time from ingestion to hospitalization was 49.6 ± 8.5 h. The most common symptoms were nausea and vomiting (100%). Four patients died from fulminant hepatic failure. Laboratory examinations showed that the alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, prothrombin time, and activated partial thromboplastin time levels peaked on the third day post-ingestion. Total bilirubin and direct bilirubin values peaked on day 7. The death group and the survival group had a similar variation trend of serological indexes, but the death group had a greater change. A. exitialis is an extremely dangerous mushroom and there is a need to educate the public to avoid picking and eating wild mushrooms that have not been definitively identified.

Abstract
Gynura formosana Kitam (family Compositae) has traditionally been used for the prevention of diabetes, cancer and inflammation in China. However, there are few reports of its anti-inflammatory effects. In the present study, after assessing the in vitro antioxidant activities of extracts from Gynura formosana Kitam leaves, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities of ethyl acetate extract of Gynura formosana Kitam leaves (EAEG) were further investigated in rats using a cotton pellet-induced model of granuloma. EAEG significantly inhibited the formation of cotton pellet-induced granuloma in rats in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, EAEG treatment significantly decreased the level of plasma C-reactive protein and suppressed the activities of plasma glutamate pyruvate transaminase and lactate dehydrogenase in model groups. Furthermore, EAEG increased the hepatic levels of anti-oxidative enzymes or antioxidants, including catalase, superoxide dismutase and reduced glutathione, and reduced the level of lipid peroxidation in the rat model of inflammation. In addition, EAEG decreased plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β in the rat model of inflammation. Therefore, our results indicated that EAEG had potent anti-inflammatory effects, which was achieved at least in part through activating antioxidant enzyme activities and suppressing the production of proinflammatory mediators by macrophages.

Abstract
Aldose reductase (AR) expression is elevated in the livers of patients with alcoholic liver diseases. However, the role of AR in the development of alcoholic liver diseases remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of AR inhibition on ethanol‑induced hepatosteatosis in vivo and in vitro, and to identify possible underlying molecular mechanisms. Alcoholic fatty livers were induced in C57BL/6 mice by feeding the mice with Lieber‑DeCarli liquid diets. The expression of AR protein was elevated in the liver tissue of C57BL/6 mice fed with an ethanol diet and in mouse AML12 liver cells exposed to ethanol. In addition to the elevation in AR, hepatic steatosis was observed in ethanol diet‑fed mice, and this ethanol‑induced steatosis was significantly attenuated by inhibiting AR activity with a specific inhibitor, zopolrestat. The suppressive effect of AR inhibition was associated with decreased levels of hepatic lipoperoxides, decreased protein expression of hepatic cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1), increased phosphorylation of 5'‑AMP‑activated protein kinase (AMPK) and decreased mRNA expression of tumor necrosis factor‑α (TNF‑α). Treatment with the AR inhibitor attenuated the level of lipid accumulation and oxidative stress, activated AMPK, and suppressed the mRNA expression of TNF‑α, interleukin‑6 and transforming growth factor‑β1 in ethanol‑treated AML12 cells. The results of the present study demonstrated that inhibition of AR ameliorated alcoholic liver disease in vivo and in vitro, in part by activating AMPK, decreasing CYP2E1‑mediated oxidative stress and ameliorating the expression of pro‑inflammatory cytokines.

Abstract
Esophageal cancer is an aggressive disease with poor prognosis because of early metastasis when diagnosed and recurrence after surgery. This study is aimed at investigating the expression of carboxypeptidaseA4 (CPA4) and aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) tumor tissues and analyzed their association and clinical significance. The expression of CPA4 and ALDH1A1 was determined by immunohistochemistry using the corresponding primary antibodies on two commercial tissue arrays. High level of CPA4 was observed in 87/150 (58%) ESCC samples and was significantly associated with histologic grade, lymph node metastasis, and TNM Classification of Esophageal cancer stage. The expression level of ALDH1A1 was much higher in ESCC than their corresponding normal epithelial tissues, with 66% positive rate. And, high levels of ALDH1A1 were significantly associated with lymph nodes metastasis (P < 0.05) and TNM stage (P < 0.05). Correlation analysis showed the expression level of CPA4 positively correlated with that of ALDH1A1 (r = 0.416, P < 0.01). In Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, either CPA4 or ALDH1A1 was significantly correlated with poor overall survival of ESCC patients. Multivariate Cox regression model showed that high expression of CPA4 was an independent prognostic factor for ESCC patients. In conclusion, our present study demonstrated for the first time that CPA4 might be used as an independent poor prognostic factor in ESCC. This study demonstrated for the first time that CPA4 was aberrantly expressed in ESCC tissues. Overexpression of CPA4 was closely associated with the putative cancer stem cell marker ALDH1A1 and might be used as an independent prognostic factor in ESCC.

Abstract
Fluorescence is widely used for cell imaging due to its high sensitivity and rich color choice but limited for in vivo imaging because of its low light penetration. Meanwhile, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely applied for in vivo diagnosis but not suitable for cell imaging because of its low resolution. Compared to 1H-MRI, 19F-MRI is more suitable for clinical application due to its high sensitivity but fabricating 19F-MRI probes is a great challenge. Therefore, it is highly desirable to develop a dual-modal imaging probe for both cell fluorescence imaging and in vivo19F-MRI with high sensitivity and deep penetration. In this study, 19F moiety loaded nanocomposites with an organic fluorescent core were successfully prepared via a facile strategy by encapsulating organic dyes with oleylamine-functionalized polysuccinimide and 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PDTES). The aggregation of organic fluorescent dyes in the core results in significant fluorescence for optical imaging, while the 19F moieties on PDTES allow for simultaneous 19F MRI. Moreover, the nanocomposites exhibited high water dispersibility and excellent biocompatibility. These properties make them promising for both cell imaging and in vivo imaging applications.
