Implications of analytical nanoscience in pharmaceutical and biomedical fields: A critical view

This review summarizes recent progress performed in the design and application of analytical tools and methodologies using nanomaterials for pharmaceutical analysis, and specifically new nanomedicines at distinct phases of development and translation from preclinical to clinical stages. Over the last 10-15 years, a growing number of studies have utilized various nanomaterials, including carbon-based, metallic nanoparticles, polymeric nanomaterials, materials based on biological molecules, and composite nanomaterials as tools for improving the analysis of pharmaceutical products. New and more complex nanomaterials are currently being explored to influence different stages of the analytical process. These materials provide unique properties to support the extraction of analytes in complex samples, increase the selectivity and efficiency of chromatographic separations, and improve the analytical properties of many sensor applications. Indeed, nanomaterials, including electrochemical detection approaches and biosensing, are expanding at a remarkable rate. Furthermore, the analytical performance of numerous approaches to determine drugs in different matrices can be significantly improved in terms of precision, detection limits, selectivity, and time of analysis. However, the quality control and metrological characterization of the currently synthesized nanomaterials still depend on the development of new and improved analytical methodologies, and the application of specific and improved instrumentation. Therefore, there is still much to explore about the properties of nanomaterials which need to be determined even more precisely and accurately.

Immobilization of α-amylase onto functionalized molybdenum diselenide nanoflowers (MoSe2-NFs) as scaffolds: Characterization, kinetics, and potential applications in starch-based industries

The current study presents the application of molybdenum diselenide nanoflowers (MoSe2-NFs) as an innovative substrate for immobilizing α-amylase by glutaraldehyde activation. This approach results in the development of a nanobiocatalyst that exhibits remarkable advantages compared to a standalone enzyme. Several physical methods, such as fluorescence microscopy, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, XRD, AFM, and Raman spectroscopy, were used to confirm that α-amylase was successfully attached to MoSe2-NFs. By employing the Box-Behnken design of the RSM, the parameters were optimized, resulting in an immobilization efficiency of roughly 87.33%. The immobilized variant of α-amylase demonstrated superior thermostability, pH stability, reusability, and storage stability in comparison to the soluble enzyme. The catalytic activity of α-amylase was highest when immobilized on MoSe2-NFs at the same pH and temperature as the soluble enzyme. However, there was an expansion in the range of parameters in which this activity was observed. Furthermore, the immobilized enzyme exhibited a retention of nearly 80% residual activity following 12 successive reuses. The immobilized enzyme exhibited around 82% residual activity after being stored for 120 days. It is possible that the immobilization process changed the Michaelis-Menten constant, which means that the substrate could no longer reach certain active sites on the enzyme because it had become longer. The study's findings suggest that the α-amylase-MoSe2-NFs system could be useful in industry because it can work in a wider range of temperature and pH conditions. Furthermore, the intrinsic non-toxic characteristics of the matrix, along with its ability to be kept for prolonged periods and recycled, render nano biocatalysts very well-suited for the effective synthesis of maltose in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

The coefficient of conformism of a correlative prediction (CCCP): Building up reliable nano-QSPRs/QSARs for endpoints of nanoparticles in different experimental conditions encoded via quasi-SMILES

Simulation of the physicochemical and biochemical behavior of nanomaterials has its own specifics. However, the main goal of modeling for both traditional substances and nanomaterials is the same. This is an ecologic risk assessment. The universal indicator of toxicity is the n-octanol/water partition coefficient. Mutagenicity indicates the possibility of future undesirable environmental effects, possibly greater than toxicity. Models have been proposed for the octanol/water distribution coefficient of gold nanoparticles and the mutagenicity of silver nanoparticles. Unlike the previous studies, here the models are built using an updated scheme, which includes two improvements. Firstly, the computing involves a new criterion for prediction potential, the so-called coefficient of conformism of a correlative prediction (CCCP); secondly, the Las Vegas algorithm is used to select the potentially most promising models from a group of models obtained by the Monte Carlo algorithm. Apparently, CCCP is a measure of the predictive potential (not only correlation). This can give an advantage in developing a model in comparison to using the classic determination coefficient. Likely, CCCP can be more informative than the classical determination coefficient. The Las Vegas algorithm is able to improve the model obtained by the Monte Carlo method.

New advances in signal amplification strategies for DNA methylation detection in vitro

5-methylcytosine (5 mC) DNA methylation is a prominent epigenetic modification ubiquitous in the genome. It plays a critical role in the regulation of gene expression, maintenance of genome stability, and disease control. The potential of 5 mC DNA methylation for disease detection, prognostic information, and prediction of response to therapy is enormous. However, the quantification of DNA methylation from clinical samples remains a considerable challenge due to its low abundance (only 1% of total bases). To overcome this challenge, scientists have recently developed various signal amplification strategies to enhance the sensitivity of DNA methylation biosensors. These strategies include isothermal nucleic acid amplification and enzyme-assisted target cycling amplification, among others. This review summarizes the applications, advantages, and limitations of these signal amplification strategies over the past six years (2018-2023). Our goal is to provide new insights into the selection and establishment of DNA methylation analysis. We hope that this review will offer valuable insights to researchers in the field and facilitate further advancements in this area.

Applications of engineered biochar in remediation of heavy metal(loid)s pollution from wastewater: Current perspectives toward sustainable development goals

Environmental pollution of heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) caused adverse impacts, has become one of the emerging concerns and challenges worldwide. Metal(loid)s can pose significant threats to living organisms even when present in trace levels within environmental matrices. Extended exposure to these substances can lead to adverse health consequences in humans. Removing HM-contaminated water and moving toward sustainable development goals (SDGs) is critical. In this mission, biochar has recently gained attention in the environmental sector as a green and alternative material for wastewater removal. This work provides a comprehensive analysis of the remediation of typical HMs by biochars, associated with an understanding of remediation mechanisms, and gives practical solutions for ecologically sustainable. Applying engineered biochar in various fields, especially with nanoscale biochar-aided wastewater treatment approaches, can eliminate hazardous metal(loid) contaminants, highlighting an environmentally friendly and low-cost method. Surface modification of engineered biochar with nanomaterials is a potential strategy that positively influences its sorption capacity to remove contaminants. The research findings highlighted the biochars' ability to adsorb HM ions based on increased specific surface area (SSA), heightened porosity, and forming inner-sphere complexes with oxygen-rich groups. Utilizing biochar modification emerged as a viable approach for addressing lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), and chromium (Cr) pollution in aqueous environments. Most biochars investigated demonstrated a removal efficiency >90 % (Cd, As, Hg) and can reach an impressive 99 % (Pb and Cr). Furthermore, biochar and advanced engineered applications are also considered alternative solutions based on the circular economy.

Signal amplification strategy of DNA self-assembled biosensor and typical applications in pathogenic microorganism detection

Biosensors have emerged as ideal analytical devices for various bio-applications owing to their low cost, convenience, and portability, which offer great potential for improving global healthcare. DNA self-assembly techniques have been enriched with the development of innovative amplification strategies, such as dispersion-to-localization of catalytic hairpin assembly, and dumbbell hybridization chain reaction, which hold great significance for building biosensors capable of realizing sensitive, rapid and multiplexed detection of pathogenic microorganisms. Here, focusing primarily on the signal amplification strategies based on DNA self-assembly, we concisely summarized the strengths and weaknesses of diverse isothermal nucleic acid amplification techniques. Subsequently, both single-layer and cascade amplification strategies based on traditional catalytic hairpin assembly and hybridization chain reaction were critically explored. Furthermore, a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in DNA self-assembled biosensors for the detection of pathogenic microorganisms is presented to summarize methods for biorecognition and signal amplification. Finally, a brief discussion is provided about the current challenges and future directions of DNA self-assembled biosensors.

Determination of metallic nanoparticles in soils by means spICP-MS after a microwave-assisted extraction treatment

Current sample preparation strategies for nanomaterials (NMs) analysis in soils by means single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry have significant constrains in terms of accuracy, sample throughput and applicability (i.e., type of NMs and soils). In this work, strengths and weakness of microwave assisted extraction (MAE) for NMs characterization in soils were systematically investigated. To this end, different extractants were tested (ultrapure water; NaOH, NH4OH, sodium citrate and tetrasodium pyrophosphate) and MAE operating conditions were optimized by means of design of experiments. Next, the developed method was applied to different type of metallic(oid) nanoparticles (Se-, Ag-, Pt- and AuNPs) and soils (alkaline, acid, sandy, clayey, SL36, loam ERMCC141; sludge amended ERM483). Results show that Pt- and AuNPs are preserved and quantitatively extracted from soils in 6 min (12 cycles of 30 s each) inside an 800 W oven by using 20 mL of 0.1 M NaOH solution. This methodology is applicable to soils showing a wide range of physicochemical properties except for clay rich samples. If clay soil fraction is significant (>15%), NMs are efficiently retained in the soil thus giving rise to poor recoveries (<10%). The analysis of labile NMs such as Se- and AgNPs is not feasible by means this approach since extraction conditions favors dissolution. Finally, when compared to current extraction methodologies (e.g., ultrasound, cloud point extraction, etc.), MAE affords better or equivalent accuracies and precision as well as higher sample throughput due to treatment speed and the possibility to work with several samples simultaneously.

Insects to the rescue? Insights into applications, mechanisms, and prospects of insect-driven remediation of organic contaminants

Traditional and emerging contaminants pose significant human and environmental health risks. Conventional physical, chemical, and bioremediation techniques have been extensively studied for contaminant remediation. However, entomo- or insect-driven remediation has received limited research and public attention. Entomo-remediation refers to the use of insects, their associated gut microbiota, and enzymes to remove or mitigate organic contaminants. This novel approach shows potential as an eco-friendly method for mitigating contaminated media. However, a comprehensive review of the status, applications, and challenges of entomo-remediation is lacking. This paper addresses this research gap by examining and discussing the evidence on entomo-remediation of various legacy and emerging organic contaminants. The results demonstrate the successful application of entomo-remediation to remove legacy organic contaminants such as persistent organic pollutants. Moreover, entomo-remediation shows promise in removing various groups of emerging contaminants, including microplastics, persistent and emerging organic micropollutants (e.g., antibiotics, pesticides), and nanomaterials. Entomo-remediation involves several insect-mediated processes, including bio-uptake, biotransfer, bioaccumulation, and biotransformation of contaminants. The mechanisms underlying the biotransformation of contaminants are complex and rely on the insect gut microbiota and associated enzymes. Notably, while insects facilitate the remediation of contaminants, they may also be exposed to the ecotoxicological effects of these substances, which is often overlooked in research. As an emerging field of research, entomo-remediation has several knowledge gaps. Therefore, this review proposes ten key research questions to guide future perspectives and advance the field. These questions address areas such as process optimization, assessment of ecotoxicological effects on insects, and evaluation of potential human exposure and health risks.

Fentogram electrochemical detection of HIV RNA based on graphene quantum dots and gold nanoparticles

This work reports the construction of an HIV-specific genosensor through the modification of carbon screen-printed electrodes (CSPE) with graphene quantum dots decorated with L-cysteine and gold nanoparticles (cys-GQDs/AuNps). Cys-GQDs were characterized by FT-IR and UV-vis spectra and electronic properties of the modified electrodes were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The modification of the electrode surface with cys-GQDs and AuNps increased the electrochemical performance of the electrode, improving the electron transfer of the anionic redox probe [Fe(CN)6]3-/4- on the electrochemical platform. When compared to the bare surface, the modified electrode showed a 1.7 times increase in effective electrode area and a 29 times decrease in charge transfer resistance. The genosensor response was performed by differential pulse voltammetry, monitoring the current response of the anionic redox probe, confirmed with real genomic RNA samples, making it possible to detect 1 fg/mL. In addition, the genosensor maintained its response for 60 days at room temperature. This new genosensor platform for early detection of HIV, based on the modification of the electrode surface with cys-GQDs and AuNps, discriminates between HIV-negative and positive samples, showing a low detection limit, as well as good specificity and stability, which are relevant properties for commercial application of biosensors.

Structural effects of charge destabilization and amino acid substitutions in amyloid fragments of CsgA

The most studied functional amyloid is the CsgA, major curli subunit protein, which is produced by numerous strains of Enterobacteriaceae. Although CsgA sequences are highly conserved, they exhibit species diversity, which reflects the specific evolutionary and functional adaptability of the major curli subunit. Herein, we performed bioinformatics analyses to uncover the differences in the amyloidogenic properties of the R4 fragments in Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica and proposed four mutants for more detailed studies: M1, M2, M3, and M4. The mutated sequences were characterized by various experimental techniques, such as circular dichroism, ATR-FTIR, FT-Raman, thioflavin T, transmission electron microscopy and confocal microscopy. Additionally, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to determine the role of buffer ions in the aggregation process. Our results demonstrated that the aggregation kinetics, fibril morphology, and overall structure of the peptide were significantly affected by the positions of charged amino acids within the repeat sequences of CsgA. Notably, substituting glycine with lysine resulted in the formation of distinctive spherically packed globular aggregates. The differences in morphology observed are attributed to the influence of phosphate ions, which disrupt the local electrostatic interaction network of the polypeptide chains. This study provides knowledge on the preferential formation of amyloid fibrils based on charge states within the polypeptide chain.

Advanced researches of traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and toxicology of medical Uncariae Ramulus Cum Uncis

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE

Medical Uncariae Ramulus Cum Uncis consists of Uncaria rhynchophylla (Miq.) Miq. ex Havil, Uncaria macrophylla Wall, Uncaria sinensis (Oliv.) Havil, Uncaria hirsuta Havil, and Uncaria sessilifructus Roxb, which belongs to the species widely used in the genus Uncaria. These species resource widely distributed in China and abroad, and the hook-bearing stem is the primary constituent enrichment site. There are many different forms and architectures of chemicals, depending on the extraction site. Traditional remedies employing URCU had been used widely in antiquity and were first compiled in renowned ancient masterpiece 'Mingyi Bielu ()' written by Hongjing Tao. In modern pharmacological studies, both the total extracts and the phytoconstituents isolated from URCU have been shown to have neuroprotective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, and autophagy-enhancer properties.

AIM OF THE STUDY

This review concentrates on the traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, and nanomaterials studies of URCU, with a perspective to assist with further research and advance.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The Chinese and English literature studies of this review are based on these database searches including Science Direct, CNKI, Wiley online library, Spring Link, Web of Science, PubMed, Medalink, Google scholar, Elsevier, ACS Publications, iPlant, Missouri Botanical Garden, Plant of the World Online. The pertinent data on URCU was gathered.

RESULTS

Based on the examination of the genus Uncaria, 107 newly marked chemical compositions have been identified from URCU from 2015 to present, including alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, steroids, and others. Pharmacological studies have demonstrated that URCU has a variety of benefits in diseases such as neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and migraine, due to its neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. According to metabolic and toxicological studies, the dosage, frequency, and interactions of the drugs that occur in vivo are of great significance for determining whether the organic bodies can perform efficacy or produce toxicity. The research on URCU-mediated nanomaterials is expanding and increasing in order to address the inadequacies of conventional Chinese medicine. The alkaloids in URCU have the capability to self-assemble with other classes of components in addition to being biologically active.

CONCLUSION

URCU plants are widely distributed, abundant in chemical constituents, and widely used in both traditional and modern medicine for a variety of pharmacological effects. The utilization of herbal medicines can be raised by assessing the pharmacological distinctions among several species within the same genus and may accelerate the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine. Controlling the concentration of drug administration, monitoring metabolic markers, and inventing novel nanotechnologies are effective strategies for synergistic influence and detoxification to alleviate the main obstacles that toxicity, low bioavailability, and poor permeability. This review can assist further research and advances.

Carbon nanotubes buckypapers: A new frontier in wastewater treatment technology

Occurrence of contaminants in water is one of the major global concerns humanity is still facing today: most of them are extremely toxic and dangerous for human health, obliging their removal for a proper and correct process of sanitation. Among wastewater treatment technologies, in the view of development of sustainable and environmentally friendly processes, membrane adsorption has proved to be a fast and simple method in the removal of pollutants, offering great contaminants recovery percentages, fast adsorbent regeneration and recycle, and easy scale-up. Due to their large surface area and tunable chemistry, carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-based materials revealed to be extraordinary adsorbents, exceeding by far performances of ordinary organic and inorganic membranes such as polyethersulfone, polyvinylidene fluoride, polytetrafluoroethylene, ceramics, currently employed in membrane technologies for wastewater treatment. In consideration of this, the review aims to summarize recent developments in the field of carbon nanotubes-based materials for pollutants recovery from water through adsorption processes. After a brief introduction concerning what adsorption phenomenon is and how it is performed and governed by using carbon nanotubes-based materials, the review discusses into detail the employment of three common typologies of CNTs-based materials (CNTs powders, CNTs-doped polymeric membranes and CNTs membranes) in adsorption process for the removal of water pollutants. Particularly focus will be devoted on the emergent category of self-standing CNTs membranes (buckypapers), made entirely of carbon nanotubes, exhibiting superior performances than CNTs and CNTs-doped polymeric membranes in terms of preparation strategy, recovery percentages of pollutants and regeneration possibilities. The extremely encouraging results presented in this review aim to support and pave the way to the introduction of alternative and more efficient pathways in wastewater treatment technologies to contrast the problem of water pollution.

Less is more: A new strategy combining nanomaterials and PGPB to promote plant growth and phytoremediation in contaminated soil

Novel combination strategies of nanomaterials (NMs) and plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) may facilitate soil remediation and plant growth. However, the efficiency of the NM-PGPB combination and interactions among NMs, PGPB, and plants are still largely unknown. We used multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and zero-valent iron (nZVI) combined with Bacillus sp. PGP5 to enhance the phytoremediation efficiency of Solanum nigrum on heavy metal (HM)-contaminated soil. The NM-PGPB combination showed the best promoting effect on plant growth, which also had synergistic effects on the bioaccumulation of HMs in S. nigrum. The MWCNT-PGP5 combination increased the Cd, Pb, and Zn removal efficiency of S. nigrum by 62.03%, 69.44%, and 61.31%, respectively. The underlining causes of improved plant growth and phytoremediation by NMs-PGPB combination were further elucidated. NM application promoted PGPB survival in soil. Compared with each single application, the combined application minimized disturbance to plant transcription levels and rhizosphere microbial community, resulting in the best performance on soil remediation and plant growth. The NM-PGPB-induced changes in the microbial community and root gene expression were necessary for plant growth promotion. This work reveals the "less is more" advantage of the NM-PGPB combination in soil remediation, providing a new strategy for soil management.

Functional nanomaterials as photosensitizers or delivery systems for antibacterial photodynamic therapy

Bacterial infection is a global health problem that closely related to various diseases threatening human life. Although antibiotic therapy has been the mainstream treatment method for various bacterial infectious diseases for decades, the increasing emergence of bacterial drug resistance has brought enormous challenges to the application of antibiotics. Therefore, developing novel antibacterial strategies is of great importance. By producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) with photosensitizers (PSs) under light irradiation, antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has emerged as a non-invasive and promising approach for treating bacterial infections without causing drug resistance. However, the insufficient therapeutic penetration, poor hydrophilicity, and poor biocompatibility of traditional PSs greatly limit the efficacy of aPDT. Recently, studies have found that nanomaterials with characteristics of favorable photocatalytic activity, surface plasmonic resonance, easy modification, and high drug loading capacity can improve the therapeutic efficacy of aPDT. In this review, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism of nanomaterials-mediated aPDT and summarize the representative nanomaterials in aPDT, either as PSs or carriers for PSs. In addition, the combination of advanced nanomaterials-mediated aPDT with other therapies, including targeted therapy, gas therapy, and multidrug resistance (MDR) therapy, is reviewed. Also, the concerns and possible solutions of nanomaterials-based aPDT are discussed. Overall, this review may provide theoretical basis and inspiration for the development of nanomaterials-based aPDT.

Electrochemical and optical (bio)sensors for analysis of antibiotic residuals

Antibiotic residuals in foods may lead to crucial health and safety issues in the human body. Rapid and in-time analysis of antibiotics using simple and sensitive techniques is in high demand. Among the most commonly applicable modalities, chromatography-based techniques like HPLC and LC-MS, along with immunological approaches, particularly ELISA have been exampled in the analysis of antibiotics. Despite being highly sensitive, these methods are considerably time-consuming, thus the presence of skilled personnel and costly equipment is essential. Nanomaterial-based (bio)sensors, however, are de novo analytical equipment with some beneficial characteristics, such as simplicity, low price, on-site, high accuracy, and sensitivity for the detection of analytes. This review aimed to collect the latest developments in NM-based sensors and biosensors for the observation of highly used antibiotics like Vancomycin (Van), Linezolid (Lin), and Clindamycin (Clin). The current challenges and developmental perspectives are also debated in detail for future research directions.

New Ca2+ based anticancer nanomaterials trigger multiple cell death targeting Ca2+ homeostasis for cancer therapy

Calcium ion (Ca2+) is a necessary element for human and Ca2+ homeostasis plays important roles in various cellular process and functions. Recent reaches have targeted on inducing Ca2+ overload (both intracellular and transcellular) for tumor therapy. With the development of nanotechnology, nanoplatform-mediated Ca2+ overload has been safe theranostic model for cancer therapy, and defined a special calcium overload-induced tumor cell death as "calcicoptosis". However, the underlying mechanism of calcicoptosis in cancer cells remains further identification. In this review, we summarized multiple cell death types due to Ca2+ overload that induced by novel anticancer nanomaterials in tumor cells, including apoptosis, autophagy, pyroptosis, and ferroptosis. We reviewed the roles of these anticancer nanomaterials on Ca2+ homeostasis, including transcellular Ca2+ influx and efflux, and intracellular Ca2+ change in the cytosolic and organelles, and connection of Ca2+ overload with other metal ions. This review provides the knowledge of these nano-anticancer materials-triggered calcicoptosis accompanied with multiple cell death by regulating Ca2+ homeostasis, which could not only enhance their efficiency and specificity, but also enlighten to design new cancer therapeutic strategies and biomedical applications.

Exploring the mechanism underlying the antifungal activity of chitosan-based ZnO, CuO, and SiO2 nanocomposites as nanopesticides against Fusarium solani and Alternaria solani

Chitosan-based nanocomposites (CS NCs) are gaining considerable attention as multifaceted antifungal agents. This study investigated the antifungal activity of NCs against two phytopathogenic strains: Fusarium solani (F. solani) and Alternaria solani (A. solani). Moreover, it sheds light on their underlying mechanisms of action. The NCs, CS-ZnO, CS-CuO, and CS-SiO2, were characterized using advanced methods. Dynamic and electrophoretic light scattering techniques revealed their size range (60-170 nm) and cationic nature, as indicated by the positive zeta potential values (from +16 to +22 mV). Transmission electron microscopy revealed the morphology of the NCs as agglomerates formed between the chitosan and oxide components. X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed crystalline structures with specific peaks indicating their constituents. Antifungal assessments using the agar diffusion technique demonstrated significant inhibitory effects of the NCs on both fungal strains (1.5 to 4-fold), surpassing the performance of the positive control, nystatin. Notably, the NCs exhibited superior antifungal potency, with CS-ZnO NCs being the most effective. A. solani was the most sensitive strain to the studied agents. Furthermore, the tested NCs induced oxidative stress in fungal cells, which elevated stress biomarker levels, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and protein carbonyl content (PCC), 2.5 and 6-fold for the most active CS-CuO in F. solani respectively. Additionally, they triggered membrane lipid peroxidation up to 3-fold higher compared to control, a process that potentially compromises membrane integrity. Laurdan fluorescence spectroscopy highlighted alterations in the molecular organization of fungal cell membranes induced by the NCs. CS-CuO NCs induced a membrane rigidifying effect, while CS-SiO2 and CS-ZnO could rigidify membranes in A. solani and fluidize them in F. solani. In summary, this study provides an in-depth understanding of the interactions of CS-based NCs with two fungal strains, showing their antifungal activity and offering insights into their mechanisms of action. These findings emphasize the potential of these NCs as effective and versatile antifungal agents.

Nanotechnology in Orthodontics: Unveiling Pain Mechanisms, Innovations, and Future Prospects of Nanomaterials in Drug Delivery

Orthodontic pain is characterized by sensations of tingling, tooth discomfort, and intolerance. According to the oral health report, over forty percent of children and adolescents have undergone orthodontic treatment. The efficacy of orthodontic treatment involving braces can be compromised by the diverse levels of discomfort and suffering experienced by patients, leading to suboptimal treatment outcomes and reduced patient adherence. Nanotechnology has entered all areas of science and technology. This review provides an overview of nanoscience, its application in orthodontics, the underlying processes of orthodontic pain, effective treatment options, and a summary of recent research in Nano-dentistry. The uses of this technology in healthcare span a wide range, including enhanced diagnostics, biosensors, and targeted drug delivery. The reason for this is that nanomaterials possess distinct qualities that depend on their size, which can greatly enhance human well-being and contribute to better health when effectively utilized. The field of dentistry has also experienced significant advancements, particularly in the past decade, especially in the utilization of nanomaterials and technology. Over time, there has been an increase in the availability of dental nanomaterials, and a diverse array of these materials have been extensively studied for both commercial and therapeutic purposes.

Gate-tunable circular phonon dichroism effect in bilayer graphene

Circular phonon dichroism effect has been proposed in two-dimensional materials; however, the lack of tunability hinders the exploration of the effect. Here, we investigate the role of dual-gating-induced inversion symmetry breaking in the circular phonon dichroism effect in bilayer graphene. We find that the introduction of inversion symmetry breaking modifies the response in the layer-symmetric and layer-antisymmetric channels, and results in the occurrence of phonon dichroism in the cross-channel. In the layer representation, the inversion symmetry breaking breaks the equality of intralayer circular phonon dichroism and enhances the interlayer response. Our results suggest that layer degree of freedom provides possibilities to tune phonon dynamics, which paves a way toward different physics and applications of two-dimensional acoustoelectronics and layertronics.

Co-applied magnesium nanoparticles and biochar modulate salinity stress via regulating yield, biochemical attribute, and fatty acid profile of Physalis alkekengi L

While previous studies have addressed the desirable effects of biochar (BC) or magnesium nanoparticles (Mg NPs) on salinity stress individually, there is a research gap regarding their simultaneous application. Additionally, the specific mechanisms underlying the effects of BC and Mg NPs on salinity in Physalis alkekengi L. remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the synergistic effects of BC and Mg NPs on P. alkekengi L. under salinity stress conditions. A pot experiment was conducted with salinity at 100 and 200 mM sodium chloride (NaCl), as well as soil applied BC (4% v/v) and foliar applied Mg NPs (500 mg L-1) on physiological and biochemical properties of P. alkekengi L. The results represented that salinity, particularly 200 mM NaCl, significantly reduced plant yield (58%) and total chlorophyll (Chl, 36%), but increased superoxide dismutase (SOD, 82%) and catalase (CAT, 159%) activity relative to non-saline conditions. However, the co-application of BC and Mg NPs mitigated these negative effects and improved fruit yield, Chl, anthocyanin, and ascorbic acid. It also decreased the activity of antioxidant enzymes. Salinity also altered the fatty acid composition, increasing saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), while decreasing monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs). The heat map analysis showed that fruit yield, anthocyanin, Chl, and CAT were sensitive to salinity. The findings can provide insights into the possibility of these amendments as sustainable strategies to mitigate salt stress and enhance plant productivity in affected areas.

Evaluating the adverse effects and mechanisms of nanomaterial exposure on longevity of C. elegans: A literature meta-analysis and bioinformatics analysis of multi-transcriptome data

Exposure to large-size particulate air pollution (PM2.5 or PM10) has been reported to increase risks of aging-related diseases and human death, indicating the potential pro-aging effects of airborne nanomaterials with ultra-fine particle size (which have been widely applied in various fields). However, this hypothesis remains inconclusive. Here, a meta-analysis of 99 published literatures collected from electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library; from inception to June 2023) was performed to confirm the effects of nanomaterial exposure on aging-related indicators and molecular mechanisms in model animal C. elegans. The pooled analysis by Stata software showed that compared with the control, nanomaterial exposure significantly shortened the mean lifespan [standardized mean difference (SMD) = -2.30], reduced the survival rate (SMD = -4.57) and increased the death risk (hazard ratio = 1.36) accompanied by upregulation of ced-3, ced-4 and cep-1, while downregulation of ctl-2, ape-1, aak-2 and pmk-1. Furthermore, multi-transcriptome data associated with nanomaterial exposure were retrieved from Gene Expression Omnibus (GSE32521, GSE41486, GSE24847, GSE59470, GSE70509, GSE14932, GSE93187, GSE114881, and GSE122728) and bioinformatics analyses showed that pseudogene prg-2, mRNAs of abu, car-1, gipc-1, gsp-3, kat-1, pod-2, acdh-8, hsp-60 and egrh-2 were downregulated, while R04A9.7 was upregulated after exposure to at least two types of nanomaterials. Resveratrol (abu, hsp-60, pod-2, egrh-2, acdh-8, gsp-3, car-1, kat-1, gipc-1), naringenin (kat-1, egrh-2), coumestrol (egrh-2) or swainsonine/niacin/ferulic acid (R04A9.7) exerted therapeutic effects by reversing the expression levels of target genes. In conclusion, our study demonstrates the necessity to use phytomedicines that target hub genes to delay aging for populations with nanomaterial exposure.

An overview on dispersion procedures and testing methods for the ecotoxicity testing of nanomaterials in the marine environment

Considerable efforts have been devoted to develop or adapt existing guidelines and protocols, to obtain robust and reproducible results from (eco)toxicological assays on engineered nanomaterials (NMs). However, while many studies investigated adverse effects of NMs on freshwater species, less attention was posed to the marine environment, a major sink for these contaminants. This review discusses the procedures used to assess the ecotoxicity of NMs in the marine environment, focusing on the use of protocols and methods for preparing NMs dispersions and on the NMs physicochemical characterization in exposure media. To this purpose, a critical analysis of the literature since 2010 was carried out, based on the publication of the first NMs dispersion protocols. Among the 89 selected studies, only <5 % followed a standardized dispersion protocol combined with NMs characterization in ecotoxicological media, while more than half used a non-standardized dispersion method but performed NMs characterization. In the remaining studies, only partial or no information on dispersion procedures or on physicochemical characterization was provided. This literature review also highlighted that metal oxides NMs were the most studied (42 %), but with an increasing interest in last years towards nanoplastics (14 %) and multicomponent nanomaterials (MCNMs, 7 %), in line with the growing attention on these emerging contaminants. For all these NMs, primary producers as algae and bacteria were the most studied groups of marine species, in addition to mollusca, while organisms at higher trophic levels were less represented, likely due to challenges in evaluating adverse effects on more complex organisms. Thus, despite the wide use of NMs in different applications, standard dispersion protocols are not often used for ecotoxicity testing with marine species. However, the efforts to characterize NMs in ecotoxicological media recognize the importance of following conditions that are as standardized as possible to support the ecological hazard assessment of NMs.

Recent advancements in nanomaterial-mediated ferroptosis-induced cancer therapy: Importance of molecular dynamics and novel strategies

Ferroptosis is a novel type of controlled cell death resulting from an imbalance between oxidative harm and protective mechanisms, demonstrating significant potential in combating cancer. It differs from other forms of cell death, such as apoptosis and necrosis. Molecular therapeutics have hard time playing the long-acting role of ferroptosis induction due to their limited water solubility, low cell targeting capacity, and quick metabolism in vivo. To this end, small molecule inducers based on biological factors have long been used as strategy to induce cell death. Research into ferroptosis and advancements in nanotechnology have led to the discovery that nanomaterials are superior to biological medications in triggering ferroptosis. Nanomaterials derived from iron can enhance ferroptosis induction by directly releasing large quantities of iron and increasing cell ROS levels. Moreover, utilizing nanomaterials to promote programmed cell death minimizes the probability of unfavorable effects induced by mutations in cancer-associated genes such as RAS and TP53. Taken together, this review summarizes the molecular mechanisms involved in ferroptosis along with the classification of ferroptosis induction. It also emphasized the importance of cell organelles in the control of ferroptosis in cancer therapy. The nanomaterials that trigger ferroptosis are categorized and explained. Iron-based and noniron-based nanomaterials with their characterization at the molecular and cellular levels have been explored, which will be useful for inducing ferroptosis that leads to reduced tumor growth. Within this framework, we offer a synopsis, which traverses the well-established mechanism of ferroptosis and offers practical suggestions for the design and therapeutic use of nanomaterials.

Unveiling key mechanisms: Transcriptomic meta-analysis of diverse nanomaterial applications addressing biotic and abiotic stresses in Arabidopsis Thaliana

The potential applications of nanomaterials in agriculture for alleviating diverse biotic and abiotic stresses have garnered significant attention. The reported mechanisms encompass promoting plant growth and development, alleviating oxidative stress, inducing defense responses, modulating plant-microbe interactions, and more. However, individual studies may not fully uncover the common pathways or distinguish the effects of different nanostructures. We examined Arabidopsis thaliana transcriptomes exposed to biotic, abiotic, and metal or carbon-based nanomaterials, utilizing 24 microarray chipsets and 17 RNA-seq sets. The results showed that: 1) from the perspective of different nanostructures, all metal nanomaterials relieved biotic/abiotic stresses via boosting metal homeostasis, particularly zinc and iron. Carbon nanomaterials induce hormone-related immune responses in the presence of both biotic and abiotic stressors. 2) Considering the distinct features of various nanostructures, metal nanomaterials displayed unique characteristics in seed priming for combating abiotic stresses. In contrast, carbon nanomaterials exhibited attractive features in alleviating water deprivation and acting as signaling amplifiers during biotic stress. 3) For shared pathway analysis, response to hypoxia emerges as the predominant and widely shared regulatory mechanism governing diverse stress responses, including those induced by nanomaterials. By deciphering shared and specific pathways and responses, this research opens new avenues for precision nano-agriculture, offering innovative strategies to optimize plant resilience, improve stress management, and advance sustainable crop production practices.

Nanomaterials-induced programmed cell death: Focus on mitochondria

Nanomaterials are widely utilized in several domains, such as everyday life, societal manufacturing, and biomedical applications, which expand the potential for nanomaterials to penetrate biological barriers and interact with cells. Multiple studies have concentrated on the particular or improper utilization of nanomaterials, resulting in cellular death. The primary mode of cell death caused by nanotoxicity is programmable cell death, which includes apoptosis, ferroptosis, necroptosis, and pyroptosis. Based on our prior publications and latest research, mitochondria have a vital function in facilitating programmed cell death caused by nanomaterials, as well as initiating or transmitting death signal pathways associated with it. Therefore, this review takes mitochondria as the focal point to investigate the internal molecular mechanism of nanomaterial-induced programmed cell death, with the aim of identifying potential targets for prevention and treatment in related studies.

Indium nanocubes based recyclable fluorescent chemosensor for sustainable environmental monitoring: pH-induced fluorescence transition and selective detection of Pd(II) ions

Rapid modern industrialization and urbanization have escalated heavy metal pollution, with palladium (Pd2+) raising significant concerns due to its extensive usage in catalysis, hydrogen storage, and electronics, thereby imposing substantial risks on the environment and human health. In this study, we report a highly fluorescent indium nanocubes based chemosensor (InNCs) functionalized with perylene tetracarboxylic acid (PTCA) and 4-(pyridyl)ethenyl benzene (PEB). The InNCs exhibited emission maximum at 415 nm (λex ∼ 350 nm) with robust chemical and photo-stability, and acted as a fluorogenic probe for selective recognition of Pd2+ in aqueous medium. The fluorescence sensing properties of InNCs were thoroughly assessed via different techniques including steady-state absorption, emission and time-resolved emission spectroscopic methods. Among the various competitive analytes, only Pd2+ could induce a significant fluorescence quenching in the probe. This "turn-off" fluorescence sensing demonstrated a remarkably low LoD of ∼65 nM. Notably, with the addition of EDTA, the probe displayed good recyclability upto 4 cycles. The sensory probe was successfully employed as a reusable platform to estimate Pd(II) in different real water and soil samples with considerable accuracy (∼ 5-10 % error). Moreover, the probe exhibited a pH-induced fluorescence transition, indicating its potential to be applied as a pH sensor. The Pd(II) binding and pH-sensing mechanisms have also been elucidated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Innovative approaches to Alzheimer's therapy: Harnessing the power of heterocycles, oxidative stress management, and nanomaterial drug delivery system

Alzheimer's disease (AD) presents a complex pathology involving amyloidogenic proteolysis, neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cholinergic deficits. Oxidative stress exacerbates AD progression through pathways like macromolecular peroxidation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and metal ion redox potential alteration linked to amyloid-beta (Aβ). Despite limited approved medications, heterocyclic compounds have emerged as promising candidates in AD drug discovery. This review highlights recent advancements in synthetic heterocyclic compounds targeting oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and neuroinflammation in AD. Additionally, it explores the potential of nanomaterial-based drug delivery systems to overcome challenges in AD treatment. Nanoparticles with heterocyclic scaffolds, like polysorbate 80-coated PLGA and Resveratrol-loaded nano-selenium, show improved brain transport and efficacy. Micellar CAPE and Melatonin-loaded nano-capsules exhibit enhanced antioxidant properties, while a tetra hydroacridine derivative (CHDA) combined with nano-radiogold particles demonstrates promising acetylcholinesterase inhibition without toxicity. This comprehensive review underscores the potential of nanotechnology-driven drug delivery for optimizing the therapeutic outcomes of novel synthetic heterocyclic compounds in AD management. Furthermore, the inclusion of various promising heterocyclic compounds with detailed ADMET (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion, and Toxicity) data provides valuable insights for planning the development of novel drug delivery treatments for AD.

Critical parameters to standardize the size and concentration determination of nanomaterials by nanoparticle tracking analysis

The size and concentration are critical for the diagnostic and therapeutic applications of nanomaterials but the accurate measurement remains challenging. Nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) is widely used for size and concentration determination. However, highly repeatable standard operating procedures (SOPs) are absent. We adopted the "search-evaluate-test" strategy to standardize the measurement by searching the critical parameters. The particles per frame are linearly proportional to the sample concentration and the measured results are more accurate and repeatable when the concentration is 108-109 particles/ml. The optimal detection threshold is around 5. The optimal camera level is such that it allows clear observation of particles without diffractive rings and overexposure. The optimal speed is ≤ 50 in AU and ∼ 10 μl/min in flow rate. We then evaluated the protocol using polydisperse polystyrene particles and we found that NTA could discriminate particles in bimodal mixtures with high size resolution but the performance on multimodal mixtures is not as good as that of resistive pulse sensing (RPS). We further analyzed the polystyrene particles, SiO2 particles, and biological samples by NTA following the SOPs. The size and concentration measured by NTA differentially varies to those determined by RPS and transmission electron microscopy.

Recent advances in functional nucleic acid decorated nanomaterials for cancer imaging and therapy

Nanomaterials possess unusual physicochemical properties including unique optical, magnetic, electronic properties, and large surface-to-volume ratio. However, nanomaterials face some challenges when they were applied in the field of biomedicine. For example, some nanomaterials suffer from the limitations such as poor selectivity and biocompatibility, low stability, and solubility. To address the above-mentioned obstacles, functional nucleic acid has been widely served as a powerful and versatile ligand for modifying nanomaterials because of their unique characteristics, such as ease of modification, excellent biocompatibility, high stability, predictable intermolecular interaction and recognition ability. The functionally integrating functional nucleic acid with nanomaterials has produced various kinds of nanocomposites and recent advances in applications of functional nucleic acid decorated nanomaterials for cancer imaging and therapy were summarized in this review. Further, we offer an insight into the future challenges and perspectives of functional nucleic acid decorated nanomaterials.

Influence of a nanoscale coating on plucking fingers and stainless steel on attachment and detachment of Salmonella Enteritidis, Escherichia coli and Campylobacter jejuni

Gastroenteritis caused by Campylobacter represents the most common reported foodborne bacterial illness worldwide, followed by salmonellosis. Both diseases are often caused by the consumption of contaminated, insufficiently heated poultry meat. This can result from contamination of the meat during the slaughtering processes. Food contact surfaces like stainless steel or plucking fingers contribute significantly to cross-contamination of poultry carcasses. Modification of these surfaces could lead to a reduction of the bacterial burden, as already proven by successful application in various food industry sectors, such as packaging.In this study, nanoscale silica-coated and uncoated stainless-steel surfaces and plucking fingers were compared on a pilot scale regarding attachment and detachment of Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella Enteritidis and Escherichia coli.The bacteria did not adhere less to the coated plucking fingers or stainless-steel sections than to the uncoated ones. The coating also did not lead to a significant difference in detachment of Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella Enteritidis and Escherichia coli from the investigated surfaces compared to the uncoated ones.Our study did not reveal any differences between the coated and uncoated surfaces with regard to the investigated bacteria. In order to achieve a better adaptation of the coating to slaughterhouse conditions, future studies should focus on its further development based on the investigation of specific coating parameters.

Nanomaterial-based Electrochemical Sensors for Multiplex Medicinal Applications

This review explores the advancements in nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensors for the multiplex detection of medicinal compounds. The growing demand for efficient and selective detection methods in the pharmaceutical field has prompted significant research into the development of electrochemical sensors employing nanomaterials. These materials, defined as functional materials with at least one dimension between 1 and 100 nanometers, encompass metal nanoparticles, polymers, carbon-based nanocomposites, and nano-bioprobes. These sensors are characterized by their enhanced sensitivity and selectivity, playing a crucial role in simultaneous detection and offering a comprehensive analysis of multiple medicinal complexes within a single sample. The review comprehensively examines the design, fabrication, and application of nanomaterial- based electrochemical sensors, focusing on their ability to achieve multiplex detection of various medicinal substances. Insights into the strategies and nanomaterials employed for enhancing sensor performance are discussed. Additionally, the review explores the challenges and future perspectives of this evolving field, highlighting the potential impact of nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensors on the advancement of medicinal detection technologies.

Recent trends in core/shell nanoparticles: their enzyme-based electrochemical biosensor applications

Improving novel and efficient biosensors for determining organic/inorganic compounds is a challenge in analytical chemistry for clinical diagnosis and research in biomedical sciences. Electrochemical enzyme-based biosensors are one of the commercially successful groups of biosensors that make them highly appealing because of their low cost, high selectivity, and sensitivity. Core/shell nanoparticles have emerged as versatile platforms for developing enzyme-based electrochemical biosensors due to their unique physicochemical properties and tunable surface characteristics. This study provides a comprehensive review of recent trends and advancements in the utilization of core/shell nanoparticles for the development of enzyme-based electrochemical biosensors. Moreover, a statistical evaluation of the studies carried out in this field between 2007 and 2023 is made according to the preferred electrochemical techniques. The recent applications of core/shell nanoparticles in enzyme-based electrochemical biosensors were summarized to quantify environmental pollutants, food contaminants, and clinical biomarkers. Additionally, the review highlights recent innovations and strategies to improve the performance of enzyme-based electrochemical biosensors using core/shell nanoparticles. These include the integration of nanomaterials with specific functions such as hydrophilic character, chemical and thermal stability, conductivity, biocompatibility, and catalytic activity, as well as the development of new hybrid nanostructures and multifunctional nanocomposites.

In vivo safety evaluation method for nanomaterials for cancer therapy

Nanomaterials are extensively used in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other diseases because of their distinctive physicochemical properties, including the small size and ease of modification. The approval of numerous nanomaterials for clinical treatment has led to a significant increase in human exposure to these materials. When nanomaterials enter organisms, they interact with DNA, cells, tissues, and organs, potentially causing various adverse effects, such as genotoxicity, reproductive toxicity, immunotoxicity, and damage to tissues and organs. Therefore, it is crucial to elucidate the side effects and toxicity mechanisms of nanomaterials thoroughly before their clinical applications. Although methods for in vitro safety evaluation of nanomaterials are well established, systematic methods for in vivo safety evaluation are still lacking. This review focuses on the in vivo safety evaluation of nanomaterials and explores their potential effects. In addition, the experimental methods for assessing such effects in various disciplines, including toxicology, pharmacology, physiopathology, immunology, and bioinformatics are also discussed.

A novel efficient multi-walled carbon nanotubes/gibberellic acid composite for enhancement vase life and quality of Rosa hybrida cv. 'Moonstone'

The postharvest life of cut flowers is limited, which is a major challenge and varies greatly depending on plant varieties, cut flower stage, flower length of the harvested shoots, and storage conditions including postharvest treatments. As a result, improving the vase life and quality of cut flowers in regulating postharvest characteristics and overcoming these challenges is critical to the horticulture business. Novel engineered nanocomposites were created and tested for possible impacts on flower bud opening, postharvest life extension, longevity regulation, and preservation and enhancement of the strength and appearance of cut flowers. The experiment was conducted as a factorial experiment using a completely randomized design (CRD) with two factors. The first factor was two holding solutions (without or with sucrose at 20 gL-1). The second factor was 12 pulsing treatments for 24 h; distilled water as a control, 75 ppm GA3, multi-walled carbon nanotubes MWCNTs at 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 ppm, and MWCNTs (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 ppm)/GA3 (75 ppm) composites; each treatment had 3 replicates, for a total of 72 experimental units. In the present study, gibberellic acid (GA3) was synthesized in functionalized (MWCNT/GA3 composites) as a novel antisenescence agent, and their effect on the vase life quality of cut rose flowers Rosa hybrida cv. 'Moonstone' was compared by assaying several parameters critical for vase life. The adsorption of GA3 on MWCNTs was proven by performing FTIR spectroscopy which ensures that the formation of the MWCNTs/GA3 composite preserves the nanostructure and was examined by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The results revealed that sucrose in the holding solution showed a significant increase in fresh weight, flower diameter, and vase life by 10.5, 10.6, and 3.3% respectively. Applying sucrose with MWCNTs 20 ppm/GA3 75 ppm composites or MWCNTs 20 ppm alone, was critical for the significant increase in flower opening by 39.7 and 28.7%, and longevity by 34.4 and 23.2%, respectively, and significantly increased chlorophyll a, b, total chlorophyll, anthocyanin, total phenolic content, and 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl scavenging activity as compared to the control.

A review of recent developments in the application of nanostructures for sperm cryopreservation

In the 1970s, sperm cryopreservation was presented as a unique route to fertility preservation. The ability to cryopreserve sperm from all species is challenging. The sperm cryopreservation process encompasses various cellular stresses such as increased osmotic pressure, ice crystal formation, and thermal shock, therefore decreasing the quality of sperm. The nanostructures due to their inherent features such as reactivity, high uptake, active surface area, and antioxidant activity, have contributed to modifying freezing protocols. In this review, the current state of the art with regards to emerging applications of nanotechnology in sperm cryopreservation are reviewed, some of the most promising advances are summarized, and the limitations and advantages are comprehensively discussed.

Detection of H. pylori outer membrane protein (HopQ) biomarker using electrochemical impedimetric immunosensor with polypyrrole nanotubes and carbon nanotubes nanocomposite on screen-printed carbon electrode

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is classified as a class I carcinogen that colonizes the human gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The detection at low concentrations is crucial in combatting H. pylori. HopQ protein is located on H. pylori's outer membrane and is expressed at an early stage of contamination, which signifies it as an ideal biomarker. In this study, we presented the development of an electrochemical impedimetric immunosensor for the ultra-sensitive detection of HopQ at low concentrations. The sensor employed polypyrrole nanotubes (PPy-NTs) and carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-COOH) nanocomposite. PPy-NTs were chosen for their excellent conductivity, biocompatibility, and redox capabilities, simplifying sample preparation by eliminating the need to add redox probes upon measurement. MWCNT-COOH provided covalent binding sites for HopQ antibodies (HopQ-Ab) on the biosensor surface. Characterization of the biosensor was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), contact angle measurements, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), complemented by numerical semiempirical quantum calculations. The results demonstrated a dynamic linear range of 5 pg/mL to 1.063 ng/mL and an excellent selectivity, with the possibility of excluding interference using EIS data, specifically charge transfer resistance and double-layer capacitance as multivariants for the calibration curve. Using two EIS components, the limit of detection is calculated to be 2.06 pg/mL. The biosensor was tested with a spiked drinking water sample and showed a signal recovery of 105.5% when detecting 300 pg/mL of HopQ. This novel H. pylori biosensor offers reliable, simple, portable, and rapid screening of the bacteria.

State of the art and future research directions of materials science applied to electrochemical biosensor developments

Centralized laboratories in which analytical processes are automated to enable the analysis of large numbers of samples at relatively low cost are used for analytical testing throughout the world. However, healthcare is changing, partly due to the general recognition that care needs to be more patient-centered and putting the patient at the center of action. One way to achieve this goal is to consider point-of-care testing (PoC) devices as alternative analytical concepts. This requires miniaturization of current analytical concepts and the use of cost-effective diagnostic tools with appropriate sensitivity and specificity. Electrochemical sensors are ideally adapted as they provide robust, low-cost, and miniaturized solutions for the detection of variable analytes, yet lack the high sensitivity comparable to more classical diagnosis approaches. Advances in nanotechnology have opened up a plethora of different nanomaterials to be applied as electrode and/or sensing materials in electrochemical biosensors. The choice of materials significantly influences the sensor's sensitivity, selectivity, and overall performance. A critical review of the state of the art with respect to the development of the utilized materials (between 2019 and 2023) and where the field is heading to are the focus of this article.

Application and progress of nanozymes in antitumor therapy

Tumors remain one of the major threats to public health and there is an urgent need to design new pharmaceutical agents for their diagnosis and treatment. In recent years, due to the rapid development of nanotechnology, biotechnology, catalytic science, and theoretical computing, subtlety has gradually made great progress in research related to tumor diagnosis and treatment. Compared to conventional drugs, enzymes can improve drug distribution and enhance drug enrichment at the tumor site, thereby reducing drug side effects and enhancing drug efficacy. Nanozymes can also be used as tumor tracking imaging agents to reshape the tumor microenvironment, providing a versatile platform for the diagnosis and treatment of malignancies. In this paper, we review the current status of research on enzymes in oncology and analyze novel oncology therapeutic approaches and related mechanisms. To date, a large number of nanomaterials, such as noble metal nanomaterials, nonmetallic nanomaterials, and carbon-based nanomaterials, have been shown to be able to function like natural enzymes, particularly with significant advantages in tumor therapy. In light of this, the authors in this review have systematically summarized and evaluated the construction, enzymatic activity, and their characteristics of nanozymes with respect to current modalities of tumor treatment. In addition, the application and research progress of different types of nicknames and their features in recent years are summarized in detail. We conclude with a summary and outlook on the study of nanozymes in tumor diagnosis and treatment. It is hoped that this review will inspire researchers in the fields of nanotechnology, chemistry, biology, materials science and theoretical computing, and contribute to the development of nano-enzymology.

Exploring the Therapeutic Potential of Lawsone and Nanoparticles in Cancer and Infectious Disease Management

Lawsone, a naturally occurring compound found in henna, has been used in traditional medicine for centuries due to its diverse biological activities. In recent years, its nanoparticle-based structure has gained attention in cancer and infectious disease research. This review explores the therapeutic potential of lawsone and its nanoparticles in the context of cancer and infectious diseases. Lawsone exhibits promising anticancer properties by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting cell proliferation, while its nanoparticle formulations enhance targeted delivery and efficacy. Moreover, lawsone demonstrates significant antimicrobial effects against various pathogens. The unique physicochemical properties of lawsone nanoparticles enable efficient cellular uptake and targeted delivery. Potential applications in combination therapy and personalized medicine open new avenues for cancer and infectious disease treatment. While clinical trials are needed to validate their safety and efficacy, lawsone-based nanoparticles offer hope in addressing unmet medical needs and revolutionizing therapeutic approaches.

Turning plastics/microplastics into valuable resources? Current and potential research for future applications

Plastics are a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic materials, mainly consisting of polymers. The use of plastics has increased to over 300 million metric tonnes in recent years, and by 2050, it is expected to grow to 800 million. Presently, a mere 10% of plastic waste is recycled, with approximately 75% ended up in landfills. Inappropriate disposal of plastic waste into the environment poses a threat to human lives and marine species. Therefore, this review article highlights potential routes for converting plastic/microplastic waste into valuable resources to promote a greener and more sustainable environment. The literature review revealed that plastics/microplastics (P/MP) could be recycled or upcycled into various products or materials via several innovative processes. For example, P/MP are recycled and utilized as anodes in lithium-ion (Li-ion) and sodium-ion (Na-ion) batteries. The anode in Na-ion batteries comprising PP carbon powder exhibits a high reversible capacity of ∼340 mAh/g at 0.01 A/g current state. In contrast, integrating Fe3O4 and PE into a Li-ion battery yielded an excellent capacity of 1123 mAh/g at 0.5 A/g current state. Additionally, recycled Nylon displayed high physical and mechanical properties necessary for excellent application as 3D printing material. Induction heating is considered a revolutionary pyrolysis technique with improved yield, efficiency, and lower energy utilization. Overall, P/MPs are highlighted as abundant resources for the sustainable production of valuable products and materials such as batteries, nanomaterials, graphene, and membranes for future applications.

Conducting biointerface of spider-net-like chitosan-adorned polyurethane/SPIONs@SrO2-fMWCNTs for bone tissue engineering and antibacterial efficacy

In pursuit of enhancing bone cell proliferation, this study delves into the fabrication of porous scaffolds through the integration of nanomaterials. Specifically, we present the development of highly conductive chitosan (CS) nanonets on fibro-porous polyurethane (PU) bio-membranes. These nanofibers comprise functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (fMWCNTs), well-dispersed superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIONs), and strontium oxide (SrO2) nanoparticles. The resulting porous scaffold exhibits remarkable interfacial biocompatibility, antibacterial properties, and load-bearing capability. Through meticulous in vitro investigations, the CS-PU/SPIONs/SrO2-fMWCNTs nanofibrous scaffolds have demonstrated a propensity to promote bone cell regeneration. Notably, the integration of these nanomaterials has been found to upregulate crucial bone-related markers, including ALP, ARS, COL-I, RUNX2, and SPP-I. The evaluation of these markers, conducted through quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and immunocytochemistry, substantiates the improved cell survival and enhanced osteogenic differentiation facilitated by the integrated nanomaterials. This comprehensive analysis underscores the efficacy of CS-PU/SPIONs/SrO2-fMWCNTs bioscaffolds in promoting MC3T3-E1 cell regeneration within, thereby holding promise for advancements in bone tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Construction of catalase@hollow silica nanosphere: Catalase with immobilized but not rigid state for improving catalytic performances

Enzyme immobilization usually make use of nanomaterials to hold up biocatalysis stability in various unamiable reaction conditions, but also lead large discount on enzyme activity. Thus, there are abundant researches focus on how to deal with the relation of enzyme molecules and supports. In this work, a new state of highly active enzymes has been established through facile and novel in situ immobilization and soft template removal method to construct enzyme contained hollow silica nanosphere (catalase@HSN) biocatalysts where enzymes in the cavity exhibit "immobilized but not rigid state". The obtained catalase@HSN was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy et al. Catalase@HSN exhibits excellent activity (about 80 % activity recovery rate) and stability suffers from extreme pH, temperature, and organic solvents. Moreover, the reusability and storage stability of catalase@HSN also are satisfactory. This proposed strategy provides a facile method for preparing biocatalysts under mild conditions, facilitating the applications of immobilized enzyme in the fields of real biocatalytic industry with high apparent activity and passable stability.

A comprehensive review on enzyme-based biosensors: Advanced analysis and emerging applications in nanomaterial-enzyme linkage

Biosensors with nanomaterials and enzymes detect and quantify specific targets in samples, converting recognition into measurable signals. The study explores the intrinsic synergy between these elements for detecting and quantifying particular targets in biological and environmental samples, with results demonstrated through bibliometric analysis and a comprehensive review of enzyme-based biosensors. Using WoS, 57,331 articles were analyzed and refined to 880. Key journals, countries, institutions, and relevant authors were identified. The main areas highlighted the multidisciplinary nature of the field, and critical keywords identified five thematic clusters, revealing the primary nanoparticles used (CNTs, graphene, AuNPs), major application fields, basic application themes, and niche topics such as sensitive detection, peroxidase activity, and quantum dot utilization. The biosensor overview covered nanomaterials and their primary applications, addressing recent advances and inherent challenges. Patent analysis emphasized the U.S. leadership in the industrial sector, contrasting with China's academic prominence. Future studies should focus on enhancing biosensor portability and analysis speed, with challenges encompassing efficient integration with recent technologies and improving stability and reproducibility in the nanomaterial-enzyme interaction.

A novel biomimetic electrochemical taste-biosensor based on conformational changes of the taste receptor

Taste sensor, a useful tool which could detect and identify thousands of different chemical substances in liquid environments, has attracted continuous concern from beverage and foodstuff industry and its consumers. Although many taste sensing methods have been extensively developed, the assessment of tastant content remains challenging due to the limitations of sensor selectivity and sensitivity. Here we present a novel biomimetic electrochemical taste-biosensor based on bioactive sensing elements and immune amplification with nanomaterials carrier to address above concerns, while taking sweet taste perception as a model. The proposed biosensor based on ligand binding domain (T1R2 VFT) of human sweet taste receptor protein showed human mimicking character and initiated the application of immune recognition in gustation biosensor, which can precisely and sensitively distinguish sweet substances against other related gustation substances with detection limit of 5.1 pM, far less than that of taste sensors without immune amplification whose detection limit was 0.48 nM. The performance test demonstrated the biosensor has the capacity of monitoring the response of sweet substances in real food environments, which is crucial in practical. This biomimetic electrochemical taste-biosensor can work as a new screening platform for newly developed tastants and disclose sweet perception mechanism.

Recent advancements in nanotechnology based drug delivery for the management of cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) constitute a predominant cause of both global mortality and morbidity. To address the challenges in the early diagnosis and management of CVDs, there is growing interest in the field of nanotechnology and nanomaterials to develop innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. This review focuses on the recent advancements in nanotechnology-based diagnostic techniques, including cardiac immunoassays (CIA), cardiac circulating biomarkers, cardiac exosomal biomarkers, and molecular Imaging (MOI). Moreover, the article delves into the exciting developments in nanoparticles (NPs), biomimetic NPs, nanofibers, nanogels, and nanopatchs for cardiovascular applications. And discuss how these nanoscale technologies can improve the precision, sensitivity, and speed of CVD diagnosis and management. While highlighting their vast potential, we also address the limitations and challenges that must be overcome to harness these innovations successfully. Furthermore, this review focuses on the emerging opportunities for personalized and effective cardiovascular care through the integration of nanotechnology, ultimately aiming to reduce the global burden of CVDs.

The combined neurotoxicity of DBP and nano-TiO2 in embryonic zebrafish (Danio rerio) revealed by oxidative activity, neuro-development genes expression and metabolomics changes

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is a commonly used plasticizer that is frequently detected in water samples due to its widespread use. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (n-TiO2) have been found to enhance the harmful effects of organic contaminants by increasing their bioavailability in aquatic environments. However, the combined toxic effects of DBP and n-TiO2 on aquatic organisms remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the neurotoxicity of DBP and n-TiO2 synergistic exposure during the early life stage of zebrafish. The results of the study revealed that co-exposure of DBP and n-TiO2 led to an increase in deformities and a significant reduction in the active duration of zebrafish larvae. Furthermore, the co-exposure of DBP and n-TiO2 resulted in elevated levels of oxidative stress and altered gene expression related to neurodevelopment and apoptosis. Notably, n-TiO2 exacerbated the oxidative damage and apoptosis induced by DBP alone exposure. Additionally, co-exposure of the 1.0 mg/L DBP and n-TiO2 significantly affected the expression of genes associated with neurodevelopment. Moreover, disturbances in amino acid metabolism and interference with lipid metabolism were observed as a result of DBP and n-TiO2 co-exposure. In general, n-TiO2 aggravated the neurotoxicity of DBP in the early life stage of zebrafish by increasing oxidative stress, apoptosis, and disrupting amino acid synthesis and lipid metabolism. Therefore, it is essential to consider the potential risks caused by DBP and nanomaterials co-existence in the aquatic environment.

Nano-based biofuel production from low-cost lignocellulose biomass: environmental sustainability and economic approach

The use of nanomaterials in biofuel production from lignocellulosic biomass offers a promising approach to simultaneously address environmental sustainability and economic viability. This review provides an overview of the environmental and economic implications of integrating nanotechnology into biofuel production from low-cost lignocellulosic biomass. In this review, we highlight the potential benefits and challenges of nano-based biofuel production. Nanomaterials provide opportunities to improve feedstock pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation, and catalysis, resulting in enhanced process efficiency, lower energy consumption, and reduced environmental impact. Conducting life cycle assessments is crucial for evaluating the overall environmental footprint of biofuel production. An economic perspective that focuses on the cost implications of utilizing nanomaterials in biofuel production is also discussed. A comprehensive understanding of both environmental and economic dimensions is essential to fully harness the potential of nanomaterials in biofuel production from lignocellulosic biomass and to move towards sustainable future energy.

Evaluation of antibacterial activity and influencing factors of normal and nanostructured copper-based materials

Background

Copper-based materials have garnered extensive recognition for their effective nature against microorganisms and their minimal toxicity. However, the evaluation for their antibacterial activity is still in its nascent stages, and the evaluation results based on existing criteria are not representative of real-world application.

Aim

To evaluate the antibacterial activity and primary determinants of influence of copper-based materials in order to investigate their practical antibacterial activity and potential mechanisms of such materials.

Methods

Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacterial suspensions were applied via inoculation onto the surfaces of normal and nanostructured copper foil. Following incubation of the inoculated surfaces under diverse experimental conditions-including varying compositions of the bacterial suspension, the use of chemical neutralizers, the existence of organic interferents, and low temperature and humidity-surviving bacteria were enumerated. Using the scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the surface changes of copper-based materials were examined.

Findings

Following 1 h of exposure to 37 °C and 90% relative humidity, Staphylococcus aureus was reduced by 4.45 log10 on normal copper foil, while all of the bacteria were eradicated on nanostructured copper foil. In addition, it was discovered that preparing a bacterial suspension with PBS results in a significant number of Escherichia coli fatalities during the test, whereas using TPS promotes the bacteria's normal growth. Furthermore, the outcomes of the antibacterial activity test were diminished when chemical neutralization was employed, and the presence of organic interferents had distinct impacts on normal copper foil and nanostructured copper foil. Additionally, low temperatures and humidity diminished the antibacterial activity of copper foil, whereas normal copper foil produced significantly better results.

Conclusion

While copper-based materials exhibit robust antibacterial activity as determined by standard assays, their efficacy in real-world applications is subject to various influencing mechanisms. In order to objectively evaluate the antibacterial activity of copper-based materials and provide precise guidance for their development and practical application, it is essential to regulate test conditions with targeted.

Enhanced degradation of Direct Red 80 dye via Fenton-like process mediated by cobalt ferrite: generated superoxide radicals and singlet oxygen

Azo dyes, widely used in the textile industry, contribute to effluents with significant organic content. Therefore, the aim of this work was to synthesize cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) using the combustion method and assess its efficacy in degrading the azo dye Direct Red 80 (DR80). TEM showed a spherical structure with an average size of 33 ± 12 nm. Selected area electron diffraction and XRD confirmed the presence of characteristic crystalline planes specific to CoFe2O4. The amount of Co and Fe metals were determined by ICP-OES, indicating an n(Fe)/n(Co) ratio of 2.02. FTIR exhibited distinct bands corresponding to Co-O (455 cm-1) and Fe-O (523 cm-1) bonds. Raman spectroscopy detected peaks associated with octahedral and tetrahedral sites. For the first time, the material was applied to degrade DR80 in an aqueous system, with the addition of persulfate. Consistently, within 60 min, these trials achieved nearly 100% removal of DR80, even after the material had undergone five cycles of reuse. The pseudo-second-order model was found to be the most fitting model for the experimental data (k2 = 0.07007 L mg-1 min-1). The results strongly suggest that degradation primarily occurred via superoxide radicals and singlet oxygen. Furthermore, the presence of UV light considerably accelerated the degradation process (k2 = 1.54093 L mg-1 min-1). The material was applied in a synthetic effluent containing various ions, and its performance consistently approached 100% in the photo-Fenton system. Finally, two degradation byproducts were identified through HPLC-MS/MS analysis.

Leveraging electrochemical sensors to improve efficiency of cancer detection

Electrochemical biosensors have emerged as a promising technology for cancer detection due to their high sensitivity, rapid response, low cost, and capability for non-invasive detection. Recent advances in nanomaterials like nanoparticles, graphene, and nanowires have enhanced sensor performance to allow for cancer biomarker detection, like circulating tumor cells, nucleic acids, proteins and metabolites, at ultra-low concentrations. However, several challenges need to be addressed before electrochemical biosensors can be clinically implemented. These include improving sensor selectivity in complex biological media, device miniaturization for implantable applications, integration with data analytics, handling biomarker variability, and navigating regulatory approval. This editorial critically examines the prospects of electrochemical biosensors for efficient, low-cost and minimally invasive cancer screening. We discuss recent developments in nanotechnology, microfabrication, electronics integration, multiplexing, and machine learning that can help realize the potential of these sensors. However, significant interdisciplinary efforts among researchers, clinicians, regulators and the healthcare industry are still needed to tackle limitations in selectivity, size constraints, data interpretation, biomarker validation, toxicity and commercial translation. With committed resources and pragmatic strategies, electrochemical biosensors could enable routine early cancer detection and dramatically reduce the global cancer burden.
