Abstract
Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) have been utilized to immobilize heavy metals, limiting their translocation in metal contaminated settings. However, studies on the mechanisms and interactions that elucidate how PGPRs mediate Nickel (Ni) tolerance in plants are rare. Thus, in this study we investigated how two pre-characterized heavy metal tolerant isolates of Morganella morganii (ABT9 and ABT3) improve Ni stress tolerance in Arabidopsis while enhancing its growth and yield. Arabidopsis seedlings were grown for five weeks in control/Ni contaminated (control, 1.5 mM and 2.5 mM) potted soil, in the presence or absence of PGPRs. Plant growth characteristics, quantum yield, and antioxidative enzymatic activities were analyzed to assess the influence of PGPRs on plant physiology. Oxidative stress tolerance was quantified by measuring MDA accumulation in Arabidopsis plants. As expected, Ni stress substantially reduced plant growth (shoot and root fresh weight by 53.25% and 58.77%, dry weight by 49.80% and 57.41% and length by 47.16% and 64.63% over control), chlorophyll content and quantum yield (by 40.21% and 54.37% over control). It also increased MDA content by 84.28% at higher (2.5 mM) Ni concentrations. In contrast, inoculation with M. morganii led to significant improvements in leaf chlorophyll, quantum yield, and Arabidopsis biomass production. The mitigation of adverse effects of Ni stress on biomass observed in M. morganii-inoculated plants was attributed to the enhancement of antioxidative enzyme activities compared to Ni-treated plants. This upregulation of the antioxidative defense mechanism mitigated Ni-induced oxidative stress, leading to improved performance of the photosynthetic machinery, which, in turn, enhanced chlorophyll content and quantum yield. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of these tolerance-inducing processes will help to complete the picture of PGPRs-mediated defense signaling. Thus, it suggests that M. morganii PGPRs candidate can potentially be utilized for plant growth promotion by reducing oxidative stress via upregulating antioxidant defense systems in Ni-contaminated soils and reducing Ni metal uptake.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Angelica keiskei is a medicinal and edible plant that has been reported to possess potent antioxidant properties in several in vitro models, but its effectiveness on naturally aging organisms is still lacking. This study explores the antioxidant and health-promoting effects of Angelica keiskei in naturally aging mice. METHODS We treated 48-week-old mice with Angelica keiskei water extract (AKWE) 30 days, and measured indicators related to aging and antioxidants. In addition, we conducted network pharmacology analysis, component-target molecular docking, real-time PCR, and MTS assays to investigate relevant factors. RESULTS The results indicated that administration of AKWE to mice led to decrease blood glucose levels, improve muscle fiber structure, muscle strength, gait stability, and increase levels of glutathione and superoxide dismutase in serum. Additionally, it decreased pigmentation of the heart tissues. Angelica keiskei combats oxidative stress by regulating multiple redox signaling pathways, and its ingredients Coumarin and Flavonoids have the potential to bind to SIRT3 and SIRT5. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicated the potential of Angelica keiskei as a safe and effective dietary supplement to combat aging and revealed the broad prospects of medicinal and edible plants for addressing aging and age-related chronic diseases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Inflammation and oxidative stress play significant roles in the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Given the recognized antioxidant properties of vitamin C, our study aimed to explore the correlation between CKD and serum vitamin C levels. METHODS Data were gathered from the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Participants below 18 years of age, pregnant individuals, those lacking essential data for CKD diagnosis, or individuals with incomplete serum vitamin C data were excluded. Subgroup and weighted multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the potential correlation between serum vitamin C and CKD. RESULTS Our study comprised 4969 participants, revealing an overall CKD prevalence of 15.0%. The results indicated that individuals with reduced serum vitamin C levels were more likely to be male, possess lower educational attainment, have a diminished poverty-income ratio, engage in heavy drinking, and be current smokers. Additionally, they exhibited a higher prevalence of obesity and diabetes. Significantly, participants in the third quartile group experienced a 37.0%, 47.0%, and 46.6% decrease in the risk of developing albuminuria, low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and CKD, respectively. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that individuals between 65 and 80 years of age showed a statistically reduced risk of developing CKD and low eGFR when their serum vitamin C levels fell in the third and fourth quartile groups. CONCLUSIONS Our findings reveal a correlation between elevated serum vitamin C levels and a decreased risk of developing albuminuria, low eGFR, and CKD. Appropriately increasing serum vitamin C levels may hold promise in protecting renal function, particularly among older individuals.

Abstract
While glycoside hydrolase family 1 (GH1) enzymes mostly catalyze hydrolysis reactions, rice Os9BGlu31 preferentially catalyzes transglycosylation to transfer a glucosyl moiety to another aglycone moiety to form a new glycosylated compound through a retaining mechanism. In this study, Os9BGlu31 was used to synthesize eight phenolic acid glucosyl esters, which were evaluated for activities in cholangiocarcinoma cells. The transglycosylation products of Os9BGlu31 wild type and its mutant variants were detected, produced on a milligram scale, and purified, and their structures were characterized by NMR spectroscopy. The transglycosylation products were evaluated by antioxidant and anti-proliferative assays, followed by an anti-migration assay for the selected phenolic acid glucosyl ester. Os9BGlu31 mutants produced higher yield and activity than wild-type enzymes on phenolic acids to produce phenolic acid glucosyl esters. Among these, gallic acid glucosyl ester (β-glucogallin) had the highest antioxidant activity and anti-proliferative activity in cholangiocarcinoma cells. It also inhibited the migration of cholangiocarcinoma cells. Our study demonstrated that rice Os9BGlu31 transglucosidase is a promising enzyme for glycosylation of bioactive compounds in one-step reactions and provides evidence that β-glucogallin inhibits cell proliferation and migration of cholangiocarcinoma cells. KEY POINTS: • Os9BGlu31 transglucosidases produced phenolic acid glucosyl esters for bioactivity testing. • Phenolic acid glucosyl esters were tested for cytotoxicity in cholangiocarcinoma cells. • β-Glucogallin displayed the highest inhibition of cholangiocarcinoma cell growth.

Abstract
Menaquinone-7 (MK-7), a subtype of vitamin K2 (VK2), assumes crucial roles in coagulation function, calcium homeostasis, and respiratory chain transmission. The production of MK-7 via microbial fermentation boasts mild technological conditions and high biocompatibility. Nevertheless, the redox activity of MK-7 imposes constraints on its excessive accumulation in microorganisms. To address this predicament, an adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) protocol was implemented in Bacillus subtilis BS011, utilizing vitamin K3 (VK3) as a structural analog of MK-7. The resulting strain, BS012, exhibited heightened tolerance to high VK3 concentrations and demonstrated substantial enhancements in biofilm formation and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) when compared to BS011. Furthermore, MK-7 production in BS012 exceeded that of BS011 by 76% and 22% under static and shaking cultivation conditions, respectively. The molecular basis underlying the superior performance of BS012 was elucidated through genome and transcriptome analyses, encompassing observations of alterations in cell morphology, variations in central carbon and nitrogen metabolism, spore formation, and antioxidant systems. In summation, ALE technology can notably enhance the tolerance of B. subtilis to VK and increase MK-7 production, thus offering a theoretical framework for the microbial fermentation production of other VK2 subtypes. Additionally, the evolved strain BS012 can be developed for integration into probiotic formulations within the food industry to maintain intestinal flora homeostasis, mitigate osteoporosis risk, and reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease. KEY POINTS: • Bacillus subtilis was evolved for improved vitamin K tolerance and menaquinone-7 (MK-7) production • Evolved strains formed wrinkled biofilms and elongated almost twofold in length • Evolved strains induced sporulation to improve tolerance when carbon was limited.

Abstract
Orychophragmus violaceus (OV) and chicory (Cichorium intybus L., CC) can be used as fresh or dry forage for animals. To determine whether OV and/or CC have beneficial effects on performance and egg quality, a total of 1212 28-wk-old Beijing You Chicken (BYC) laying hens with similar performance were randomly allocated to 4 groups with 3 replicate pens per group, and 101 birds per pen. The birds were fed a basal diet (control), the basal diet + OV (3.507 kg/d/pen), the basal diet + CC (2.525 kg/d/pen), and the basal diet + OV + CC (OVC, 1.7535 kg/d/pen OV + 1.2625 kg/d/pen CC) for 3 wks after one wk of adaptation. The results showed that egg-laying rate was not affected by OV, CC and OVC (p > 0.05), but weekly average egg mass was significantly increased by OV and CC (p < 0.05). The feed egg ratio in the CC group (2.82) was significantly lower than that in the other three groups (p < 0.05). The eggshell thickness (EST), albumen height (AH) and Haugh unit (HU) were decreased by OV and CC (p < 0.05); while yolk color (YC) was increased in the CC and OVC groups (p < 0.05). Egg grade was decreased by OV (p < 0.05). Sensory evaluation showed that there was a trend for increased YC in OV, CC and OVC (p = 0.089). Serum total protein was significantly lower in OV group than those in the control and CC group (p < 0.05); serum albumin content was significantly decreased in OV, CC and OVC groups (p = 0.006). Serum glutathione peroxidase activity in CC and OVC groups was significantly higher than that in the control group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the present study suggests that CC had a better effect on the performance of the native laying hens than OV. The OV and CC affected egg quality, while YC was increased in CC and OVC groups. The OVC improved YC and serum antioxidative properties of native laying hens without affecting the performance.

Abstract
A flexible, antioxidant, biodegradable, and UV-resistant polymeric nanocomposite hydrogel with heteroatom-doped carbon dots (CDs) has been fabricated using a simple one-step in situ free radical gelation process. The hydrogel formation and their physico-mehcanical characteristics have been assessed by rheology, uniaxial tensile and compression testing. The water uptake behaviour of the hydrogels is controlled by the CDs by manipulating their internal morphology and porosity. The porous nature of the hydrogels has been found from their scanning electron microscopic images which are also supported by their anomalous diffusion-based transport mechanism. The rheological signatures of the hydrogels show delayed network rupturing due to the secondary physical crosslinking alleviated by CDs. Moreover, CDs are directly influencing the permeabilites (oxygen and moisture) by lowering the values compared to their neat hydrogel films which are essential for a packing material. The biodegradability of the hydrogel films showed gradual weight loss (<75 %) within 3 weeks. The hydrogel films also have been qualified to be acted as antibacterial and antioxidant material. The shelf-life and non-leaching of CDs from gel matrices are also performed which shows its excellent capability to be used as a potential antibacterial, biodegradable, antioxidant alternative packaging material in food sectors.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of subcritical water (SW) temperatures on the hydrolysis pattern and characteristics of hydrolysates prepared with strong rice (SR) and floury rice (FR). The characteristics of the hydrolysates were generally dependent on the rice cultivar in the SW temperature range of 150-250 °C, while the cultivar dependence was diminished at temperatures greater than 300 °C. Based on brix and reducing sugar content, an optimal production of rice hydrolysates was obtained at a SW temperature range of 200-250 °C. However, thermal conversion of sugar into acids, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural was manifested at 250 °C. The rice hydrolysates prepared at 250 ∼ 300 °C had the highest antioxidant activity with strong umami intensity, but they suppressed the growth of prebiotics. Therefore, the present study demonstrated that controlling the SW temperature is crucial to improve rice hydrolysis efficiency and to regulate the physiological activity of the hydrolysates.

Abstract
In this study, a straightforward approach is presented for the first time to anchor Ir nanoparticles on the surface of uniform polyaniline (PANi) nanotubes (NTs), which can be used as an efficient peroxidase (POD)-like catalyst. The morphology and chemical structure of the PANi-Ir nanocomposite are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. Owing to the strong interaction between Ir nanoparticles and PANi, a remarkable catalytic enhancement is achieved compared to the bare Ir black catalyst and individual PANi NTs, dominating withan electron transfer mechanism. Furthermore, an efficient colorimetric sensor for ascorbic acid (AA) is developed with a low detection limit of 1.0 μM (S/N = 3), and a total antioxidant capacity (TAC) sensing platform is also constructed for the rigorous detection and analysis of fruits and vegetables.

Abstract
Naringenin (NGE), a typical flavanone abundant in citrus fruits, exhibits remarkable antioxidant activities. However, its low solubility in oil restricts its widespread use in inhibiting lipid oxidation. In this study, we present a novel and effective approach to address this limitation by developing a naringenin-phospholipid complex (NGE-PC COM). Comprehensive analytical techniques including Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were employed to confirm the formation of the NGE-PC COM and elucidate the interaction mechanism between NGE and phospholipids molecules. Notably, the oil-solubility of NGE was significantly enhanced by approximately 2700-fold when formulated as a phospholipid complex in soybean oil. The improved oil-solubility of NGE-PC COM enabled effective inhibition of oil thermal oxidation under high temperature conditions. Generally, this investigation proposed a novel and promising strategy for employing flavanones with strong antioxidant activities to enhance the thermal oxidative stability of edible oil during heating processes.

Abstract
Lipid oxidation is a cause of food spoilage, and antioxidants are used to retard it, but the timing of administration is important for this effect. The research aims to evaluate the protective efficiency against oxidative deterioration through the prolonged or complete addition of antioxidants without retention in the matrix. For this purpose, three modes of administration of the synthetic antioxidant BHT and oregano essential oil were evaluated: 100, 50, and 25 in which 100 % was incorporated at the beginning, 50 % in two aliquots, and 25 % in 4 aliquots. After adding the aliquots, all treatments reached 0.02 w/w of antioxidant in oil. An accelerated oxidation study was performed at 60 °C for 12 days, and chemical indicators (Peroxide and Conjugated Dienes value) along with volatiles (2-Heptenal and 2,4-Decadienal EE) were assessed. The order of protection shows that the initial addition of antioxidants yielded the highest efficiency.

Abstract
Iron-copper nanozymes (Fe-Cu NZs) with good peroxidase activity were prepared through hydrothermal method by using copper nitrate as copper source, iron acetate as iron source and 2, 5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid as organic ligand. Upon oxidation of the colourless TMB to light blue products by Fe-Cu NZs, the addition of Norfloxacin (NOR) resulted in a colour change to dark blue. The absorbance of the system correlated linearly with NOR concentration in the range of 3.3 μM to 66 μM, and the detection limit (LOD) was 0.386 μM. A rapid colourimetric assay for the determination of NOR in food matrices was developed, with a detection time of only one minute. Additionally, the assay facilitated the simultaneous catalytic degradation of NOR via Fe-Cu NZs. The primary degradation mechanism of NOR was identified as the transformation of the quinolone ring and the cleavage of the C9 = C10 double bond, which was substantiated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Morinda officinalis How is called "Ba-Ji-Tian" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which belongs to the genus Rubiaceae and is widely used for medicinal purposes in China and other eastern Asian countries. Morinda officinalis How polysaccharides (MOPs) are one of the key bioactive components, and have a variety of biological activities, such as antioxidation, antifatigue, enhanced immunity, antiosteoporosis, ect. AIM OF THE REVIEW This review is aimed at providing comprehensive information of the latest preparation technologies, structural characterization, and pharmacological effects of MOPs. A more in-depth research on the structure and clinical pharmacology of the MOPs was explored. It could lay a foundation for further investigate the pharmacological activities and guide the safe clinical practice of MOPs. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Web of Science, PubMed, Scifinder, Google Scholar, CNKI, Wanfang database, and other online database are used to search and collect the literature on extraction and separation methods, structural characterization, and pharmacological activities of MOPs publisher from 2004 to 2023. The key words are "Morinda officinalis polysaccharides", "extraction", "isolation", "purification" and "pharmacological effects". RESULTS Morinda officinalis has been widely used in tonifying the kidney yang since ancient times, and is famous for one of the "Four Southern Medicines" in China for the treatment of depression, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, infertility, fatigue and Alzheimer's disease. The active ingredients of Morinda officinalis that have been researched on the treatment of depression and osteoporosis are mostly polysaccharides and oligosaccharides. The content of polysaccharides varies with different methods of extraction, separation and purification. MOPs have a wide range of pharmacological effects, including antioxidant, antifatigue, immunomodulatory, antiosteoporosis, and regulation of spermatogenesis activities. These pharmacological properties lay a foundation for the treatment of oxidative stress, osteoporosis, spermatogenic dysfunction, immunodeficiency, inflammation and other diseases with MOPs. CONCLUSIONS At present, MOPs have been applied in the treatment of skeletal muscle atrophy, varicocele, osteoporosis, because of its effects of enhancing immunity, improving reproduction and antioxidant. However, the structure-activity relationship of these effects are still not clear. The more deeply study could be conducted on the MOPs in the future. The toxicology and clinical pharmacology, as well as mechanism of action of MOPs were also needed to deeply studied and clarified. This paper could lay the foundation for the application and safety of MOPs in multifunctional foods and drugs.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE As a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, Glycyrrhiza. URALENSIS Fisch. (licorice root, chinese name: Gancao) has a variety of medicinal values and is widely used clinically. Its main active ingredient, glycyrrhizic acid (GA), is believed to have a neuroprotective effect. However, the underlying biological mechanisms of GA on stress-induced anxiety disorders are still unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY To investigate the anti-anxiety effect of GA and its underlying mechanism. METHODS We selected the anxiety model induced by repeated chronic restraint stress (CRS) for 2 h on each of 7 consecutive days. GA (4, 20, 100 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally once daily for 1 week. The potential GA receptors were identified using whole-cell patches and computer-assisted docking of molecules. High-throughput RNA sequencing, adeno-associated virus-mediated gene regulation, Western blotting, and RT-qPCR were used to assess the underlying molecular pathways. RESULTS GA alleviate depression-like and anxiety-like behaviors in CRS mice. GA decreased synaptic transmission by facilitating glutamate reuptaking in mPFC. Meanwhile, long-term GA treatment increased the expression of clock genes Per1 and Per2. Suppressing both Per1 and Per2 abolished the anxiolytic effects of GA treatment. CONCLUSION Our study suggests that GA may be developed for the treatment of stress-induced anxiety disorders, and its mechanism is related to GLT1 and Per1/2-dependent pathways. This presents a novel approach to discovering potent therapeutic drugs.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Baoyuan Decoction (BYD) was initially recorded in the classic of "Bo Ai Xin Jian" in the Ming dynasty. It is traditionally used for treating weakness and cowardice, and deficiency of vital energy. In researches related to anti-fatigue effects, the reciprocal regulation of AMPK and circadian clocks likely plays an important role in anti-fatigue mechanism, while it has not yet been revealed. Therefore, we elucidated the anti-fatigue mechanism of BYD through AMPK/CRY2/PER1 pathway. AIM OF THE STUDY To investigate the effect and mechanism of BYD in reducing fatigue, using pharmacodynamics, network pharmacology and transcriptomics through the AMPK/CRY2/PER1 signaling pathway. MATERIALS AND METHODS Firstly, the chemical constituents of BYD were qualitatively identified by UHPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap/MS, establishing a comprehensive strategy with an in-house library, Xcalibur software and Pubchem combined. Secondly, a Na2SO3-induced fatigue model and 2,2'-Azobis (2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AAPH)-induced oxidative stress model were developed to evaluate the anti-fatigue and anti-oxidant activities of BYD using AB zebrafish. The anti-inflammatory activity of BYD was evaluated using CuSO4-induced and tail cutting-induced Tg (lyz: dsRed) transgenic zebrafish inflammation models. Then, target screening was performed by Swiss ADME, GeneCards, OMIM and DrugBank databases, the network was constructed using Cytoscape 3.9.0. Transcriptome and network pharmacology technology were used to investigate the related signaling pathways and potential mechanisms after treatment with BYD, which were verified by real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). RESULTS In total, 114 compounds from the water extract of BYD were identified as major compounds. Na₂SO₃-induced fatigue model and AAPH-induced oxidative stress model indicated that BYD has significant anti-fatigue and antioxidant effects. Meanwhile, BYD showed significant anti-inflammatory effects on CuSO4-induced and tail cutting-induced zebrafish inflammation models. The KEGG result of network pharmacology showed that the anti-fatigue function of BYD was mainly effected through AMPK signaling pathway. Besides, transcriptome analysis indicated that the circadian rhythm, AMPK and IL-17 signaling pathways were recommended as the main pathways related to the anti-fatigue effect of BYD. The RT-qPCR results showed that compared with a model control group, the treatment of BYD significantly elevated the expression mRNA of AMPK, CRY2 and PER1. CONCLUSION Herein, we identified 114 chemical constituents of BYD, performed zebrafish activity validation, while demonstrated that BYD can relieve fatigue by AMPK/CRY2/PER1 signaling pathway through network pharmacology and transcriptome.

Abstract
The formation of volatile compounds affects the flavor of processed wheat flour products. Herein, the effects of the composition of fatty acid hydroperoxides and the differences in the antioxidant contents among wheat cultivars on the flavor of wheat flour products were clarified. For this purpose, the volatile compounds in wheat flour doughs, LOX activity, fatty acid hydroperoxide composition from fractionated LOX, and antioxidant content were analyzed. Norin61 exhibited a high LOX activity and 9-fatty acid hydroperoxide production. Unsaturated aldehydes derived from 9-fatty acid hydroperoxides contributed significantly to the volatile compound profile of Norin61. Moreover, the lowest lutein content was observed in Norin61 among the analyzed cultivars. The LOX activity and composition of the fatty acid hydroperoxides produced by LOX affected the production of volatile compounds, whereas carotenoids had a suppressive effect. This study provides useful information for product design with the desired flavor for developing various processed wheat flour products.

Abstract
Given their multifaceted roles, carotenoids have garnered significant scientific interest, resulting in a comprehensive and intricate body of literature that occasionally presents conflicting findings concerning the proper characterization, quantification, and bioavailability of these compounds. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that the pursuit of novel carotenoids remains a crucial endeavor, as their diverse properties, functionalities and potential health benefits make them invaluable natural resources in agri-food and health promotion through the diet. In this framework, particular attention is given to ketocarotenoids, viz., astaxanthin (one of them) stands out for its possible multifunctional role as an antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial agent. It has been widely explored in the market and utilized in different applications such as nutraceuticals, food additives, among others. Adonirubin and adonixanthin can be naturally found in plants and microorganisms. Due to the increasing significance of natural-based products and the remarkable opportunity to introduce these ketocarotenoids to the market, this review aims to provide an expert overview of the pros and cons associated with adonirubin and adonixanthin.

Abstract
RATIONALE N-Nitroso dimethylamine (NDMA) is a mutagenic impurity detected in several ranitidine products. The amino functional group of ranitidine is a risk factor for classical nitrosation-induced NDMA formation in ranitidine drug products during storage conditions. The United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) recommended the use of antioxidants to control NDMA in drug products. Considering the need for sensitive analytics, a liquid chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) method was developed and validated to detect NDMA in this pilot study to demonstrate the antioxidants as inhibitors of nitrosation reactions. METHODS The method, utilizing an EC-C18 column and tuned to atmospheric pressure chemical ionization/selected ion monitoring (APCI/SIM) mode, separated NDMA (m/z: 75.0553; tR: 3.71 min) and ranitidine (m/z: 315.1485; tR: 8.61 min). APCI mode exhibited four times higher sensitivity to NDMA than electrospray ionization (ESI) mode. Classical nitrosation of the dimethyl amino group of ranitidine was studied with sodium nitrite in solid pellets. Antioxidants (alpha-tocopherol, ascorbic acid, and trolox) were evaluated as NDMA attenuators in ranitidine pellets under vulnerable storage conditions. The developed method quantified NDMA levels in samples, extracted with methanol through vortex shaking for 45 min. RESULTS The method achieved a limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) of 0.01 and 0.05 ng/mL, respectively, with linearity within 1-5000 ng/mL (R1: 0.9995). It demonstrated good intra-day and inter-day precision (% RSD [relative standard deviation]: <2) and accuracy (96.83%-101.72%). Nitrosation of ranitidine induced by nitrite was significant (p < 0.001; R2 = 0.9579) at various sodium nitrite levels. All antioxidants efficiently attenuated NDMA formation during ranitidine nitrosation. Ascorbic acid exhibited the highest NDMA attenuation (96.98%), followed by trolox (90.58%). This study recommends 1% ascorbic acid and trolox as potent NDMA attenuators in ranitidine drug products. CONCLUSIONS This study compared the effectiveness of antioxidants as NDMA attenuators in ranitidine under storage conditions susceptible to NDMA generation. The study concluded that ascorbic acid and trolox are potent inhibitors of NDMA formation and nitrosation attenuators in ranitidine drug products.

Abstract
Currently, planting selenium-rich crops using inorganic selenium such as selenate and selenite is used to address human selenium deficiency problems. In this paper, besides the above two traditional inorganic selenium speciation, we chose a new organic selenium speciation of potassium selenocyanoacetate to investigate the different effects of selenium speciation on selenium absorption, selenium transformation and cadmium antagonism via foliar application. Plantingexperiments showed that the selenium content of garlic bulbs treated with organic selenium was 1.8-3.9 times higher than that of inorganic selenium. Additionally, the absorption and transformation efficiency of organic selenium in garlic was also the highest, reaching over 95 %. Importantly, it was noteworthy that the cadmium content in bulbs treated with organic selenium was significantly lower than the Chinese food safety standard (0.2 mg/kg). Hence, this study provides an efficient organic selenium speciation which is beneficial to meet human selenium requirements and ensure safe utilization of cadmium-contaminated soils.

Abstract
In this study, we explored the use of lipid mesophases (LMPs) as a biocompatible and biodegradable material for sustained drug delivery. Our hypothesis centered on leveraging the high surface-to-volume ratio of LMP-based beads to enhance strength, stability, and surface interaction compared to the LMP bulk gel. To modulate drug release, we introduced antioxidant vitamin E into the beads, influencing mesophase topologies and controlling drug diffusion coefficients. Four drugs with distinct chemical properties and intended for three different pathologies and administration routes were successfully loaded into the beads with a drug entrapment efficiency exceeding 80 %. Notably, our findings revealed sustained drug release, irrespective of the drugs' chemical properties, culminating in the development of an injectable formulation. This formulation allows direct administration into the target site, minimizing systemic exposure, and thereby mitigating adverse effects. Our approach demonstrates the potential of LMP-based beads for tailored drug delivery systems with broad applications in diverse therapeutic scenarios.

Abstract
PURPOSE Alzheimer's disease (AD) appears as a result of an increase in the accumulation of amyloid beta peptide (Aβ) and a decrease in neurotransmitters (acetylcholine) within the brain cells which may be due to increase in acetylcholinesterase (AchE) activity and change in expression of Apolipoprotein E4 (ApoE4) and Clusterin (Clu) genes. The aim of the present study was using natural products such as Ginkgo biloba (G. biloba) extract that has the potential to reduce Aβ formation and increase AchE inhibition with its ability to save neuronal DNA from damage. METHODS Sixty male aged rats were divided into six experimental groups exposed to AlCl3 to induce AD model and were treated with G. biloba extract. Collected brain tissues were used to assess the apoptosis rate, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, AchE inhibitory activity, expression alteration in ApoE4 and Clu genes, DNA fragmentations and gutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity.Results: The results exhibited that rats exposed to AlCl3 increased significantly rate of apoptosis, ROS formation, DNA fragmentation, up-regulation of ApoE4 and Clu genes as well as decrease of AchE inhibitory activity and GPx activity compared with those in control rats. However, treatment of AlCl3-rats with G. biloba extract improved the above neurotoxicity results induced by AlCl3 exposure. CONCLUSIONS It is therefore likely that G. biloba extract's protective properties against AD are due to its ability to activate the response against oxidative stress.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder and the most common cause of dementia globally. The pathogenesis of AD remains still unclear. The three main features of AD are extracellular deposits of amyloid beta (Aβ) plaque, accumulation of abnormal formation hyper-phosphorylated tau protein, and neuronal loss. Mitochondrial impairment plays an important role in the pathogenesis of AD. There are problems with decreased activity of multiple complexes, disturbed mitochondrial fusion, and fission or formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, mitochondrial transport is impaired in AD. Mouse models in many research show disruptions in anterograde and retrograde transport. Both mitochondrial transportation and network impairment have a huge impact on synapse loss and, as a result, cognitive impairment. One of the very serious problems in AD is also disruption of insulin signaling which impairs mitochondrial Aβ removal.Discovering precise mechanisms leading to AD enables us to find new treatment possibilities. Recent studies indicate the positive influence of metformin or antioxidants such as MitoQ, SS-31, SkQ, MitoApo, MitoTEMPO, and MitoVitE on mitochondrial functioning and hence prevent cognitive decline. Impairments in mitochondrial fission may be treated with mitochondrial division inhibitor-1 or ceramide.

Abstract
The present study aimed to elucidate the pathway of pigment formation and identify the source of antioxidant activity during sugar smoking. Building upon previous research, this investigation replicated the sucrose cleavage process involved in sugar-smoking through model reactions to obtain distinct model reaction products. The products were analyzed using various techniques such as ultraviolet-visible spectrometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, high-performance liquid chromatography, and high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The findings revealed that the pyrolysis of sucrose at 330 °C yielded glucose and fructose, with fructose pyrolysis producing significantly more 5-HMF than glucose. Moreover, the antioxidant capacity of 5-HMF was found to make a substantial contribution. The primary source of 5-HMF was identified as fructose resulting from the cleavage of sucrose at 330 °C, while the primary pathway for the formation of the sugar-smoking pigment 5-GGMF was attributed to the intermolecular dehydration of 5-HMF and glucose at 150 °C.

Abstract
Mounting evidence suggests that environmental pollutants may affect reproductive health, potentially leading to adverse outcomes like pregnancy loss. However, it remains unclear whether exposure to synthetic phenolic antioxidants (SPAs) correlates with early pregnancy loss (EPL). This study explores SPA exposure's link to EPL and its potential molecular mechanisms. From 2021 to 2022, 265 early pregnant women (136 serum and 129 villus samples) with and without EPL were enrolled. We quantified 17 SPAs in serum and chorionic villus, with AO1010, AO3114, BHT, AO2246, and BHT-Q frequently being detected, suggesting their ability to cross the placental barrier. AO1135 showed a positive relationship with EPL in sera, indicating a significant monotonic dose-response relationship (p-trend <0.001). BHT-Q exhibited a similar relationship with EPL in villi. Inhibitory effects of BHT-Q on estradiol (E2) were observed. Molecular docking revealed SPA-protein interactions involved in E2 synthesis. SPA-induced EPL might occur with specific serum levels of AO1135 and certain villus levels of AO1010, BHT-Q, and AO2246. BHT-Q emerges as a potential biomarker for assessing EPL risk. This study provides insights into understanding of the exposure to SPAs and potential adverse outcomes in pregnant women.

Abstract
Salinity stress badly restricts the growth, yield and quality of vegetable crops. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) is a friendly and effective mean to enhance plant growth and salt tolerance. However, information on the regulatory mechanism of PGPR on vegetable crops in response to salt stress is still incomplete. Here, we screened a novel salt-tolerant PGPR strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa HG28-5 by evaluating the tomatoes growth performance, chlorophyll fluorescence index, and relative electrolyte leakage (REL) under normal and salinity conditions. Results showed that HG28-5 colonization improved seedling growth parameters by increasing the plant height (23.7%), stem diameter (14.6%), fresh and dry weight in the shoot (60.3%, 91.1%) and root (70.1%, 92.5%), compared to salt-stressed plants without colonization. Likewise, HG28-5 increased levels of maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) (99.3%), the antioxidant enzyme activities as superoxide dismutase (SOD, 85.5%), peroxidase (POD, 35.2%), catalase (CAT, 20.6%), and reduced the REL (48.2%), MDA content (41.3%) and ROS accumulation in leaves of WT tomatoes under salt stress in comparison with the plants treated with NaCl alone. Importantly, Na+ content of HG28-5 colonized salt-stressed WT plants were decreased by15.5% in the leaves and 26.6% in the roots in the corresponding non-colonized salt-stressed plants, which may be attributed to the higher K+ concentration and SOS1, SOS2, HKT1;2, NHX1 transcript levels in leaves of colonized plants under saline condition. Interestingly, increased abscisic acid (ABA) content and upregulation of ABA pathway genes (ABA synthesis-related genes NCED1, NCED2, NCED4, NECD6 and signal genes ABF4, ABI5, and AREB) were observed in HG28-5 inoculated salt-stressed WT plants. ABA-deficient mutant (not) with NCED1 deficiency abolishes the effect of HG28-5 on alleviating salt stress in tomato, as exhibited by the substantial rise of REL and ROS accumulation and sharp drop of Fv/Fm in the leaves of not mutant plants. Notably, HG28-5 colonization enhances tomatoes fruit yield by 54.9% and 52.4% under normal and saline water irrigation, respectively. Overall, our study shows that HG28-5 colonization can significantly enhance salt tolerance and improved fruit yield by a variety of plant protection mechanism, including reducing oxidative stress, regulating plant growth, Na+/K+ homeostasis and ABA signaling pathways in tomato. The findings not only deepen our understanding of PGPR regulation plant growth and salt tolerance but also allow us to apply HG28-5 as a microbial fertilizer for agricultural production in high-salinity areas.

Abstract
Tyrosol is a natural phenolic compound with potent antioxidant properties in the field of food manufacturing. However, the low lipophilicity of tyrosol limited its application. Therefore, the construction of tyrosol laurate (Tyr-L) could effectively overcome the limitations of tyrosol. In this work, four ionic liquids (ILs) were applied for TYr-L preparation. Among them, the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate ([Bmim]HSO4) showed the best catalytic performance. The maximum TYr-L yield was achieved (94.24 ± 1.23 %) under the optimal conditions (reaction temperature 119 °C, substrate ratio 1:6.7, IL dosage 9.2 %, and reaction time 12 h). The kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were also evaluated and it was found that Ea, ΔH, ΔS, and ΔG were 80.81 kJ·mol-1, 77.63 kJ·mol-1, -82.08 J·(mol·K)-1, and 109.89 kJ·mol-1, respectively. The acidic [Bmim]HSO4 demonstrated excellent reusability and stability, even after 6 cycles. Furthermore, TYr-L showed superior ABTS radical scavenging ability, which could be further applied in various industrial processes.

Abstract
In this study, we analyzed the tea polyphenol composition, volatile flavor composition and storage stability of steamed beef with black tea. The molecular docking and dynamics were used to elucidate the interaction mechanism between the active components of black tea and myofibrillar proteins. The highest content of caffeine (CAF) was found in black tea steamed beef products, followed by catechin (C), epicatechin gallate (ECG), epicatechin gallate (EGCG) and theaflavins (TF). Steamed beef with black tea showed low ΔE* value, low TBARS value, low carbonyl content as well as high sulfhydryl content during storage. The addition of C, CAF, ECG, EGCG and TF enhanced the oxidative stability of myofibrillar protein. In this study, the effects of active components of black tea on the oxidative stability of myofibrillar protein and their interactions were determined, which could provide a reference for the application of black tea and its active components in meat products. At the same time, it can provide new ideas for the development of new meat products.

Abstract
House crickets are expected to play a significant role in the future food sector. Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) drying offers an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional drying methods. Pulsed electric fields (PEF) is a non-thermal process that facilitates conventional processes. EHD was applied to house crickets with and without PEF pretreatment, and the effect of PEF and EHD on the quality of the insects was evaluated. PEF pretreatment positively affected the oven drying at 60 °C by reducing its duration and thus decreasing the energy consumption by 14.22%. Moisture removal of EHD was not sufficient to replace oven drying, but when combined with oven drying, the overall energy consumption was reduced by >50%. PEF processing also increased the protein solubility (53.07% higher than the respective control) and antioxidant activity (24.05% higher than the respective control) of the oven-dried samples and reduced the histamine content of the EHD-dried samples (25.87% lower than the respective control).

Abstract
Lipophilization of natural antioxidants is a proven strategy to enhance the solubility in bulk oil systems, thereby increasing their efficacy against oxidative degradation. This study aims to synthesize esters of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (3,4-DHPA) using Amberlyst-15 and to study the application of these esters in refined fish oil. Lipophilic esters were synthesized by esterification and transesterification of 3,4-DHPA in various solvent systems. Esters of methanol, butanol and hexanol were obtained with percent conversion of 81.1, 69.3 and 78.8 respectively, and were subjected to molecular characterization and in vitro oxidant assays. The 3,4-DHPA and its methyl ester showed 36% reduction in the TOTOX value over 30 days of storage. The length of the acyl chain in the ester was found to exert a high influence on its efficacy and lipophilicity. This is the first report of 3,4-DHPA and its lipophilic esters studied for enhancing the oxidative stability of fish oil.

Abstract
In this work, shrimp shell-derived magnetic NiFe2O4/N, O co-doped porous carbon nanozyme with superior oxidase (OXD)-like activity was prepared and used for colorimetric/photothermal/smartphone dual-signal triple-mode detection of antioxidants in fruits and beverages. The magnetic NiFe2O4/N, O co-doped porous carbon (MNPC) material was triumphantly fabricated using a combined in-situ surface chelation and pyrolysis method. The resultant MNPC composite exhibits a superior OXD-like activity, which can effectively oxidize 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) for yielding colorimetric/temperature dual-signal (CTDS) in absence of H2O2. This CTDS output sensor was successfully used for the determination of ascorbic acid and tannic acid. The proposed CTDS sensor with good specificity and high sensitivity can satisfy different on-site analysis requirements. Interestingly, the MNPC as a sustainable filler was further used for improving packaging properties of polyvinyl alcohol film. In short, this work offers a large-scale and cheap method to fabricate magnetic carbon-based nanozyme for monitoring antioxidants and ameliorating packaging properties.

Abstract
Different-sized pomegranate seed oil-based emulsions (coarse (CsP) and nanoemulsions (NsP): 1246 and 325 nm) were successfully prepared. Strawberries treated with NsP and CsP showed a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in yeast-mold counts (TMY) by 1.80 log CFU g-1, and mesophilic aerobic bacteria counts (TMAB) decreased (p < 0.05) by 0.91 log CFU g-1, respectively. CsP- and NsP-treated strawberries had a TPC of 74.45 and 82.35 mg GAE kg-1, respectively, while control samples had a TPC of 44.24 mg GAE kg-1. The strawberries treated with NsP exhibited the highest antioxidant capacity with 179.44 mol TEAC g-1. After treatment with a coarse emulsion, severity levels of A. niger and B. cinerea were 60 and 73 % while the nanoemulsion treatment significantly reduced severity levels to 55.3 and 56 %. The coarse and nanoemulsions may have potential use within the food industry owing to their antioxidant and antifungal properties as well as their ability to enhance strawberry quality and function.

Abstract
Both alien plant invasions and soil microplastic pollution have become a concerning threat for terrestrial ecosystems, with consequences on the human well-being. However, our current knowledge of microplastic effects on the successful invasion of plants remains limited, despite numerous studies demonstrating the direct and indirect impacts of microplastics on plant performance. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a greenhouse experiment involving the mixtures of soil and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) microplastic pellets and fragments at the concentrations of 0, 0.5 % and 2.0 %. Additionally, we included Solidago decurrens (native plant) and S. canadensis (alien invasive plant) as the target plants. Each pot contained an individual of either species, after six-month cultivation, plant biomass and antioxidant enzymes, as well as soil properties including soil moisture, pH, available nutrient, and microbial biomass were measured. Our results indicated that microplastic effects on soil properties and plant growth indices depended on the Solidago species, microplastic shapes and concentrations. For example, microplastics exerted positive effects on soil moisture of the soil with native species but negative effects with invasive species, which were impacted by microplastic shapes and concentrations, respectively. Microplastics significantly impacted catalase (P < 0.05) and superoxide dismutase (P < 0.01), aboveground biomass (P < 0.01), and belowground/aboveground biomass (P < 0.01) of the native species depending on microplastic shapes, but no significant effects on those of the invasive species. Furthermore, microplastics effects on soil properties, nutrient, nutrient ratio, and plant antioxidant enzyme activities contributed to plant biomass differently among these two species. These results suggested that the microplastics exerted a more pronounced impact on native Solidago plants than the invasive ones. This implies that the alien invasive species displays greater resistance to microplastic pollution, potentially promoting their invasion. Overall, our study contributes to a better understanding of the promoting effects of microplastic pollution on plant invasion.

Abstract
Perilla meal hydrolysates (PMHs) were prepared by proteases; volatile profiles from heated mixtures of PMH and coconut oil (CO) were evaluated for their application as odor providers. Amino acids composition and degree of hydrolysis, and antioxidant activity in O/W emulsion of PMHs were assessed. PMHs were heated with different concentration of CO or with CO, xylose, and cysteine, which were non-Maillard and Maillard system, respectively. Among PMHs, double enzyme treatment using Alcalase and Flavourzyme showed higher degree of hydrolysis and antioxidant activity compared to PMHs from one type of enzymes. The presence of CO significantly increased oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen-containing volatiles from PMHs in non-Maillard system. In case of Maillard system, PMHs with 10 % (w/w) CO contributed the formation of oxygen and nitrogen-containing volatiles such as furan and 2-methylpyrazine. PMHs might serve as an odor generator in the presence of edible oils like CO.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to develop novel functional stabilizers for Pickering emulsions using phenolic acids-grafted chitin nanofibers (phenolic acids-g-ChNF), which were fabricated by grafting ferulic acid (FA), sinapic acid (SA) and caffeic acid (CA) onto ChNF via free radical-mediated method. The Fourier transform infrared spectrum and Proton nuclear magnetic resonance showed that graft copolymerization occurred between the amino groups of ChNF and the carbonyl of the phenolic acids. Further, it was revealed that CA-g-ChNF and SA-g-ChNF possessed stronger antioxidant and antibacterial properties than the original ChNF and FA-g-ChNF. Additionally, we applied phenolic acids-g-ChNF to develop Pickering emulsions and found that SA-g-ChNF- and CA-g-ChNF-stabilized emulsions displayed reduced droplet sizes compared to FA, the main reason for which was that SA and CA had a rather close bonding relationship with ChNF. Taken together, SA-g-ChNF and CA-g-ChNF as novel multi-functional particles can be employed for facilitating the stability of Pickering emulsions.

Abstract
The proposed research adheres to a certain methodology to ensure that the technique used for analyzing the centrophenoxine drug is sustainable and green. It is important to highlight that several tools that have been recently developed were utilized as potential indicators of environmental sustainability and applicability. The present research presents a novel and entirely innovative method utilizing ultrasensitive spectrofluorimetry for the detection of centrophenoxine (CPX) drug. The employed methodology in this study involved the utilization of one-step, one-pot, and direct spectrofluorimetric technique, which was found to be both efficient and environmentally sustainable in the validation and assessment of the drug. Simply, when CPX and erythrosine B reagent were combined in an acidic environment, the highly resonance Rayleigh scattering product was immediately produced. The sensitivity limits were observed to be within the range of 15-47 ng mL-1, whereas the linearity was assessed to be in the range of 50-2000 ng mL-1. The optimal settings for all modifiable parameters of the system were ascertained through an analysis of centrophenoxine-erythrosine B complexes. Moreover, the system demonstrated compliance with International Council for Harmonization (ICH) specifications without encountering any issues. The suggested process was then rated on different recent environmental safety measuring metrics to see how good it was for the environment. Fortunately, the WAC standards that combine ecological and functional elements utilizing the Green/Red/Blue (RGB 12) design also acclaimed the current analytical technique as a white one. Additionally, a new applicability evaluation tool (BAGI) was employed to estimate the practicability of the planned method in the analytical chemistry field.

Abstract
Navel orange remains metabolized continuously during postharvest storage, but few studies have monitored the changes of these metabolites. Therefore, HS-SPME-GC-MS and UPLC-Q-TOF/MS were used to comprehensively investigate the dynamic changes of the components of Gannan navel orange during storage at room temperature. A total of 62 volatile components and 68 non-volatile components were identified. Principal Component Analysis and Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis showed that navel orange under different storage periods were clearly distinguished. Combined with VIP > 1 and p < 0.05, 19 volatile and 27 non-volatile differential metabolites were obtained. KEGG enrichment analysis revealed that flavonoid biosynthesis (map00941) was the primary metabolic pathway. The middle storage period had a higher antioxidant enzyme activity, but the malondialdehyde content was the opposite. These results reveal the changes of postharvest components of Gannan navel orange, providing a theoretical basis for the storage and product development of navel orange.

Abstract
Spinach tends to deteriorate after harvest due to physiological metabolic activities. As a natural, pollution-free, and environmentally friendly preservative, melatonin (MT) can effectively maintain the quality of fruits and vegetables after harvest and delay senescence. To enhance the preservation effect of MT, this study developed antioxidant films using MT-loaded UiO-66 metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles. This approach effectively extends the shelf life of spinach while preserving its quality. The underlying mechanism involves leveraging the microporous structure and stability of UiO-66 MOF. Experimental results obtained from the packaging films demonstrated significant improvements in both mechanical strength and antioxidant properties when UiO-66 was loaded with MT at a concentration of 0.20 mg/mL and combined with sodium alginate. Freshness preservation experiments also indicated the effective preservation effect of these films on spinach. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that MT-loaded UiO-66 MOF is a promising active packaging material for spinach preservation.

Abstract
This study involved the preparation of Metal Organic Frameworks (MOF)-derived Co8FeS8@Co1-xS nanoenzymes with strong interfacial interactions. The nanoenzymes presented the peroxidase (POD)-like activity and the oxidation activity of reduced glutathione (GSH). Accordingly, the dual activities of Co8FeS8@Co1-xS provided a self-cascading platform for producing significant amounts of hydroxyl radical (•OH) and depleting reduced glutathione, thereby inducing tumor cell apoptosis and ferroptosis. More importantly, the Co8FeS8@Co1-xS inhibited the anti-apoptosis protein B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) and activated caspase family proteins, which caused tumor cell apoptosis. Simultaneously, Co8FeS8@Co1-xS affected the iron metabolism-related genes such as Heme oxygenase-1 (Hmox-1), amplifying the Fenton response and promoting apoptosis and ferroptosis. Therefore, the nanoenzyme synergistically killed anti-apoptotic tumor cells carrying Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog (KRAS) mutations. Furthermore, Co8FeS8@Co1-xS demonstrated good biocompatibility, which paved the way for constructing a synergistic catalytic nanoplatform for an efficient tumor treatment.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Traditional uses of Morus alba L. leaf extracts (MLE) have been reported for treating hyperglycaemia and diabetes. Phytochemical compounds in the leaves demonstrated the ability to enhance insulin sensitivity and β-cell secretory function, suggesting their potential value in reducing blood glucose and treating diabetes. However, the phytochemical constituents and safety of the herbal medicines need to be verified in each experimental field from different growing areas. Studies on the phytochemistry and toxicity of Morus alba leaves in Southeast Asia, especially in Brunei, have never been investigated. AIM OF THE STUDY This study aimed to investigate the bioactivity and phytochemistry of Morus alba ethanolic leaf extract from Brunei Darussalam and its subacute toxic effects in the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) female mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS The phenolic yield and antioxidant of the extract were analysed. Meanwhile, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography were utilised to determine the phenolic compound of the MLE. In the subacute toxicity study, twenty-five female mice were randomly divided into five groups: the control group, which received oral gavage of 5% dimethyl sulfoxide solvent (DMSO), and the MLE treatment group, which received the extract at a dose of 125, 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg. Physiology, haematology, biochemistry, and histology were evaluated during the study. RESULTS Morus alba leaf depicted total phenolic 10.93 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g dry weight (DW), flavonoid 256.67 mg quercetin equivalents (QE)/g DW, and antioxidant bioactivity content of 602.03 IC50 μg/mL and 13.21 mg Fe2+/g DW. Twenty compounds in the Morus alba ethanolic leaf extract were identified, with chlorogenic acid (305.60 mg/100 g DW) as the primary compound. As for subacute toxicity in this study, neither mortality nor haematological changes were observed. On the other hand, administration of 500 and 1000 mg/kg MLE resulted in mild hepatocellular injury, as indicated by a significant (p < 0.05) increase in liver enzyme activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). The histopathological score showed mild hepatocellular necrosis in administering 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg of MLE. The parameters of renal injury were within normal limits, with the increase in eosinophilic cytoplasm observed in the histological scoring at 1000 mg/kg of MLE. CONCLUSIONS Morus alba leaf extract showed abundant polyphenols. In a study on subacute toxicity, MLE caused mild hepatotoxicity in mice. The toxic effect of the extract may be due to kaempferol and chlorogenic acid compounds. The 125 mg/kg MLE dose was safe with no adverse effects.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Medical Uncariae Ramulus Cum Uncis consists of Uncaria rhynchophylla (Miq.) Miq. ex Havil, Uncaria macrophylla Wall, Uncaria sinensis (Oliv.) Havil, Uncaria hirsuta Havil, and Uncaria sessilifructus Roxb, which belongs to the species widely used in the genus Uncaria. These species resource widely distributed in China and abroad, and the hook-bearing stem is the primary constituent enrichment site. There are many different forms and architectures of chemicals, depending on the extraction site. Traditional remedies employing URCU had been used widely in antiquity and were first compiled in renowned ancient masterpiece 'Mingyi Bielu ()' written by Hongjing Tao. In modern pharmacological studies, both the total extracts and the phytoconstituents isolated from URCU have been shown to have neuroprotective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, and autophagy-enhancer properties. AIM OF THE STUDY This review concentrates on the traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, and nanomaterials studies of URCU, with a perspective to assist with further research and advance. MATERIAL AND METHODS The Chinese and English literature studies of this review are based on these database searches including Science Direct, CNKI, Wiley online library, Spring Link, Web of Science, PubMed, Medalink, Google scholar, Elsevier, ACS Publications, iPlant, Missouri Botanical Garden, Plant of the World Online. The pertinent data on URCU was gathered. RESULTS Based on the examination of the genus Uncaria, 107 newly marked chemical compositions have been identified from URCU from 2015 to present, including alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, steroids, and others. Pharmacological studies have demonstrated that URCU has a variety of benefits in diseases such as neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and migraine, due to its neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. According to metabolic and toxicological studies, the dosage, frequency, and interactions of the drugs that occur in vivo are of great significance for determining whether the organic bodies can perform efficacy or produce toxicity. The research on URCU-mediated nanomaterials is expanding and increasing in order to address the inadequacies of conventional Chinese medicine. The alkaloids in URCU have the capability to self-assemble with other classes of components in addition to being biologically active. CONCLUSION URCU plants are widely distributed, abundant in chemical constituents, and widely used in both traditional and modern medicine for a variety of pharmacological effects. The utilization of herbal medicines can be raised by assessing the pharmacological distinctions among several species within the same genus and may accelerate the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine. Controlling the concentration of drug administration, monitoring metabolic markers, and inventing novel nanotechnologies are effective strategies for synergistic influence and detoxification to alleviate the main obstacles that toxicity, low bioavailability, and poor permeability. This review can assist further research and advances.

Abstract
The transient chlorophenol shock under some emergency conditions might directly affect the pollutant removal of bioreactor. Therefore, the recovery of bioreactor performance after transient chlorophenol shock is a noteworthy issue. In the present research, the performance, antioxidant response, microbial succession and functional genes of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) were evaluated under transient 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) shock. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) removal efficiencies decreased sharply in the first 4 days after 60 mg/L 2,4,6-TCP shock for 24 h and gradually recovered to normal in the subsequent 8 days. The nitrogen removal rates and their corresponding enzymatic activities rapidly decreased after transient 2,4,6-TCP shock and then gradually increased to normal. The increase of antioxidant enzymatic activity, Cu-Zn SOD genes and Fe-Mn SOD genes contributed to the recovery of SBR performance. The abundance of genes encoding ammonia monooxygenase and hydroxylamine dehydrogenase decreased after transient 2,4,6-TCP shock, including amoA, amoC and nxrA. Thauera, Dechloromonas and Candidatus_Competibacter played key roles in the restorative process, which provided stable abundances of narG, norB , norC and nosZ. The results will deeply understand into the effect of transient 2,4,6-TCP shock on bioreactor performance and provide theoretical basis to build promising recoveries strategy of bioreactor performance.

Abstract
Light-stabilizing additives may contribute to the overall pollution load of microplastics (MPs) and potentially enter the food chain, severely threatening aquatic life and human health. This study investigated the variation between polystyrene (PS) MPs and phthalocyanine blue (CuPC)-containing MPs before and after photoaging, as well as their effects on Microcystis aeruginosa. The presence of PS-MPs increased cell mortality, antioxidant enzyme activity, and the variation in extracellular components, while the presence of CuPC exacerbated these variations. CuPC-containing MPs caused different increasing trends in superoxide dismutase and malondialdehyde activities due to electron transfer across the membrane. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that the MPs and CuPC affected various cellular processes, with the greatest impact being on cell membranes. Compared with MPs, CuPC negatively affected ribosome and polysaccharide formation. These findings provide insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the cellular response to MPs and their associated light-stabilizer pollution and imply the necessity for mitigating the pollution of both MPs and light-stabilizers.

Abstract
Substituted para-phenylenediamines (PPDs) are synthetic chemicals used globally for rubber antioxidation, with their quinone derivatives (PPD-Qs) raising particular environmental concerns due to their severe toxicity to aquatic organisms. Emerging research has identified a variety of novel PPD-Qs ubiquitously detected in the environment, yet experimental proof for the toxicity of PPD-Qs has not been forthcoming due to the unavailability of bulk standards, leaving substantial gaps in the prioritization and mechanistic investigation of such novel pollutants. Here, we use synthesized chemical standards to study the acute toxicity and underlying mechanism of 18 PPD-Qs and PPDs to the aquatic bacterium V. fischeri. Bioluminescence inhibition EC50 of PPD-Qs ranged from 1.76-15.6 mg/L, with several emerging PPD-Qs demonstrating significantly higher toxicity than the well-studied 6PPD-Q. This finding suggests a broad toxicological threat PPD-Qs pose to the aquatic bacterium, other than 6PPD-Q. Biological response assays revealed that PPD-Qs can reduce the esterase activity, cause cell membrane damage and intracellular oxidative stress. Molecular docking unveiled multiple interactions of PPD-Qs with the luciferase in V. fischeri, suggesting their potential functional impacts on proteins through competitive binding. Our results provided crucial toxicity benchmarks for PPD-Qs, prioritized these novel pollutants and shed light on the potential toxicological mechanisms.

Abstract
Sodium valproate (VPA), a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor, could be a promising candidate to treat acute myocardial infarction (AMI). In this study, AMI was induced in New Zealand White rabbits by occluding the left circumflex coronary artery for 1 h, followed by reperfusion. The animals were distributed into three experimental groups: the sham-operated group (SHAM), the AMI group and the AMI + VPA group (AMI treated with VPA 500 mg/kg/day). After 5 weeks, abdominal aorta was removed and used for isometric recording of tension in organ baths or protein expression by Western blot, and plasma for the determination of nitrate/nitrite (NOx) levels by colorimetric assay. Our results indicated that AMI induced a reduction of the endothelium-dependent response to acetylcholine without modifying the endothelium-independent response to sodium nitroprusside, leading to endothelial dysfunction. VPA treatment reversed AMI-induced endothelial dysfunction and even increased NO sensitivity in vascular smooth muscle. This response was consistent with an antioxidant effect of VPA, as it was able to reverse the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD 1) down-regulation induced by AMI. Our experiments also ruled out that the VPA mechanism was related to eNOS, iNOS, sGC and arginase expression or changes in NOx plasma levels. Therefore, we conclude that VPA improves vasodilation by increasing NO bioavailability, likely due to its antioxidant effect. Since endothelial dysfunction was closely related to AMI, VPA treatment could increase aortic blood flow, making it a potential agent in reperfusion therapy that can prevent the vascular damage.

Abstract
Glutathione (GSH) is a potent antioxidant, fragrance, and anti-browning agent in the field of food chemistry. The accurate GSH evaluation in food and vegetables is critical for instructing the right supplementation of GSH in body. However, most reported GSH fluorescent probes were utilized for the biological imaging. In this study, a new probe DCYP-GSH was developed by coupling of benzopyranonitrile as signal reporter to N-methylpyridine through C = C bond as binding site. Notably, a significant increase in fluorescence intensity and a λmax red-shift of DCYP-GSH in electron spectra were found as a result of the response to GSH. Quantitative detection of GSH in water and milk samples were achieved using probe DCYP-GSH. The development of DCYP-GSH was anticipated to provide an effective toolkit for food safe evaluation.

Abstract
Tert-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ) stand as one of the most widely used antioxidants in food and daily chemical products. Rapid and sensitive monitoring of TBHQ holds considerable importance in safeguarding human health due to its potential risks. In this study, we devised an alcogel-based colorimetric sensor enabling the portable and visual detection of TBHQ. The Ce-UiO-66 nanozyme exhibiting remarkable oxidase-like activity, was synthesized and characterized, facilitating the catalysis of TBHQ oxidation to 2-tert-butyl-1,4-benzoquinone (TBBQ). The ensuing chromogenic reaction between TBBQ and ethylenediamine produced a stable and colored product, serving as a reliable indicator for the rapid and specific detection of TBHQ. Building upon this discovery, a portable and low-cost colorimetric sensor was fashioned by integrating the nanozyme into κ-carrageenan alcogel, thereby enabling on-site TBHQ detection via a smartphone-based sensing platform. The colorimetric sensor exhibited a detection limit of 0.8 μg mL-1, demonstrating robust performance across various matrices such as edible oils, cosmetics, and surface water. Recoveries ranged from 84.9 to 95.5%, with the sensor's accuracy further validated through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Our study presents an effective approach to rapid and convenient monitoring of TBHQ, exhibiting good extensibility and practicability.

Abstract
The capacity differences of seven catechin monomers to produce colors after treating with catechin-free extract were investigated. After 240-min reaction, only (-)-epicatechin (EC) and (+)-catechin (C) presented obvious luminous red color with L* values of 63.32-71.73, a* values of 37.13-46.44, and b* values of 65.64-69.99. Meanwhile, the decrease rate of EC and C was 43.52 %-50.35 %, which were significantly lower than those of other catechin monomers (85.91 %-100 %). The oxidized products of catechin monomers were analyzed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time of flight-mass spectrometry coupled with diode array detector, wherein dehydro-dimers and -trimers (oxidative coupling products of catechins' A-B ring) were found to be the major chromogenic compounds of EC and C. Additionally, the antioxidant capacity of catechin monomers only decreased after 30-min reaction, while along with further enzymatic reaction, catechin monomers presented comparable oxyradical scavenging ability (e.g., the DPPH inhibitory rates of catechin monomers were in the range of 24.42 %-50.77 %) to vitamin C (positive control, DPPH inhibitory rate was 27.66 %). Meanwhile, the inhibitory effects of most catechin monomers on α-glucosidase were enhanced in different degrees. These results provided basis for the development of enzymatically-oxidized catechin monomers as functional food color additives.

Abstract
Micro/nano-plastics (MPs/NPs) represent an emerging contaminant, posing a significant threat to oceanic halobios. While the adverse effects of joint pollutants on marine organisms are well-documented, the potential biological impacts on the food chain transmission resulting from combinations of MPs/NPs and heavy metals (HMs) remain largely unexplored. This study exposed the microbial loop to combined contaminants (MPs/NPs + HMs) for 48h, bacteria and contaminants are washed away before feeding to the traditional food chain, employing microscopic observation, biochemical detection, and transcriptome analysis to elucidate the toxicological mechanisms of the top predator. The findings revealed that MPs/NPs combined with Cd2+ could traverse both the microbial loop and classical food chain. Acute exposure significantly affected the carbon biomass of the top predator Tigriopus japonicus (75.8% lower). Elevated antioxidant enzyme activity led to lipid peroxidation, manifesting in increased malondialdehyde levels. Transcriptome sequencing showed substantial differential gene expression levels in T. japonicus under various treatments. The upregulation of genes associated with apoptosis and inflammatory responses, highlighting the impact of co-exposure on oxidative damage and necroptosis within cells. Notably, NPs-Cd exhibited stronger toxicity than MPs-Cd. NPs-Cd led to a greater decrease in the biomass of top predators, accompanied by lower activities of GSH, SOD, CAT, and GSH-PX, resulting in increased production of lipid peroxidation product MDA and higher oxidative stress levels. This investigation provides novel insights into the potential threats of MPs/NPs combined with Cd2+ on the microbial loop across traditional food chain, contributing to a more comprehensive assessment of the ecological risks associated with micro/nano-plastics and heavy metals.

Abstract
A novel approach consisting of preselection of peptides using bioinformatics tool followed by final selection using Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) - an efficient technique to investigate metal complexing properties of peptides/hydrolysates - was developed. Selected pea hydrolysates and synthetic metal chelating peptides potentially present in pea hydrolysates were investigated for their ability to inhibit the lipid oxidation in emulsions composed of 5 % w/w fish oil and stabilized with Tween® 20. Results indicated that addition of peptides/hydrolysates did not impact the physical stability of emulsions and led to lower level of lipid hydroperoxides. Moreover, peptide KGKSR inhibited the generation of 1-penten-3-ol and hexanal to the same level as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) did and the formation of 2 ethyl-furan was lower than when EDTA was added. Peptide GRHRQKHS showed same concentration of hexanal as EDTA thus confirming efficacy of using SPR for selecting peptides/hydrolysates to use as antioxidants in emulsions.

Abstract
There are complex and diverse substances in traditional vinegars, some of which have been identified as biologically active factors, but the variety of functional compounds is currently restricted. In this study, it was aimed to determine the bioactive compounds in 10 typical functional vinegars. The findings shown that total flavonoids (0.21-7.19 mg rutin equivalent/mL), total phenolics (0.36-3.20 mg gallic acid equivalent/mL), and antioxidant activities (DPPH: 3.17-47.63 mmol trolox equivalent/L, ABTS: 6.85-178.29 mmol trolox equivalent/L) varied among different functional vinegars. In addition, the concentrations of the polysaccharides (1.17-44.87 mg glucose equivalent/mL) and total saponins (0.67-12.46 mg oleanic acid equivalent/mL) were determined, which might play key role for the function of tested vinegars. A total of 8 organic acids, 7 polyphenol compounds and 124 volatile compounds were measured and tentatively identified. The protocatechuic acid (4.81-485.72 mg/L), chlorogenic acid (2.69-7.52 mg/L), and epicatechin (1.18-97.42 mg/L) were important polyphenol compounds in the functional vinegars. Redundancy analysis indicated that tartaric acid, oxalic acid and chlorogenic acid were significantly positively correlated with antioxidant capacity. Various physiologically active ingredients including cyclo (Pro-Leu), cyclo (Phe-Pro), cyclo (Phe-Val), cyclo (Pro-Val), 1-monopalmitin and 1-eicosanol were firstly detected in functional vinegars. Principle component analysis revealed that volatiles profile of bergamot Monascus aromatic vinegar and Hengshun honey vinegar exhibited distinctive differences from other eight vinegar samples. Moreover, the partial least squares regression analysis demonstrated that 11 volatile compounds were positively correlated with the antioxidant activity of vinegars, which suggested these compounds might be important functional substances in tested vinegars. This study explored several new functionally active compounds in different functional vinegars, which could widen the knowledge of bioactive factor in vinegars and provide new ideas for further development of functional vinegar beverages.
