Abstract
BACKGROUND Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. We aimed to investigate the role of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) in the changes of cardiac structures in OSA rabbits treated by mandibular advancement device (MAD). METHODS Eighteen male New Zealand white rabbits aged 6 months were randomly divided into three groups: control group, group OSA and group MAD. Hyaluronate gel was injected into the soft palate of the rabbits in group OSA and group MAD to induce OSA. The cone beam computer tomography (CBCT) of the upper airway and polysomnography (PSG) was performed to ensure successful modelling. CBCT and PSG were applied again to detect the effects of MAD treatment. All animals were induced to sleep in a supine position for 4-6 h a day for 8 weeks. Then the levels of NF-κB, Interleukin 6 (IL-6), Interleukin 10 (IL-10) and the proportion of myocardial fibrosis (MF) were detected. RESULTS The higher activation of NF-κB, IL-6 and IL-10 were found in the OSA group than in the control group, leading to the increase of collagen fibres compared with the control group. Furthermore, the apnoea-hypopnea index (AHI) was positively correlated with the above factors. There were no significant differences between group MAD and the control group. CONCLUSION The NF-κB pathway was activated in the myocardium of OSA rabbits, which accelerated the development of MF. Early application of MAD could reduce the activation of NF-κB in the myocardium and prevent the development of MF.

Abstract
Tyrosol is a natural phenolic compound with potent antioxidant properties in the field of food manufacturing. However, the low lipophilicity of tyrosol limited its application. Therefore, the construction of tyrosol laurate (Tyr-L) could effectively overcome the limitations of tyrosol. In this work, four ionic liquids (ILs) were applied for TYr-L preparation. Among them, the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate ([Bmim]HSO4) showed the best catalytic performance. The maximum TYr-L yield was achieved (94.24 ± 1.23 %) under the optimal conditions (reaction temperature 119 °C, substrate ratio 1:6.7, IL dosage 9.2 %, and reaction time 12 h). The kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were also evaluated and it was found that Ea, ΔH, ΔS, and ΔG were 80.81 kJ·mol-1, 77.63 kJ·mol-1, -82.08 J·(mol·K)-1, and 109.89 kJ·mol-1, respectively. The acidic [Bmim]HSO4 demonstrated excellent reusability and stability, even after 6 cycles. Furthermore, TYr-L showed superior ABTS radical scavenging ability, which could be further applied in various industrial processes.

Abstract
Existing modelling tools, developed to aid the design of efficient molecular wires and to better understand their charge-transport behaviour and mechanism, have limitations in accuracy and computational cost. Further research is required to develop faster and more precise methods that can yield information on how charge transport properties are impacted by changes in the chemical structure of a molecular wire. In this study, we report a clear semilogarithmic correlation between charge transport efficiency and nuclear magnetic resonance chemical shifts in multiple series of molecular wires, also accounting for the presence of chemical substituents. The NMR data was used to inform a simple tight-binding model that accurately captures the experimental single-molecule conductance values, especially useful in this case as more sophisticated density functional theory calculations fail due to inherent limitations. Our study demonstrates the potential of NMR spectroscopy as a valuable tool for characterising, rationalising, and gaining additional insights on the charge transport properties of single-molecule junctions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of CB2 on bone regulation during orthodontic tooth movement. METHODS Thirty male mice were allocated into 2 groups (n = 15 in each group): wild type (WT) group and CB2 knockout (CB2-/-) group. Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) was induced by applying a nickel-titanium coil spring between the maxillary first molar and the central incisors. There are three subgroups within the WT groups (0, 7 and 14 days) and the CB2-/- groups (0, 7 and 14 days). 0-day groups without force application. Tooth displacement, alveolar bone mass and alveolar bone volume were assessed by micro-CT on 0, 7 and 14 days, and the number of osteoclasts was quantified by tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining. Moreover, the expression levels of RANKL and OPG in the compression area were measured histomorphometrically. RESULTS The WT group exhibited the typical pattern of OTM, characterized by narrowed periodontal space and bone resorption on the compression area. In contrast, the accelerated tooth displacement, increased osteoclast number (P < 0.0001) and bone resorption on the compression area in CB2-/- group. Additionally, the expression of RANKL was significantly upregulated, while OPG showed low levels in the compression area of the CB2 - / - group (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS CB2 modulated OTM and bone remodeling through regulating osteoclast activity and RANKL/OPG balance.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION As the proportion of aging adults increases and inguinal hernia repair becomes increasingly popular as a day surgery, the demand for laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair as a day surgery is increasing among patients aged 80 years and older. Relevant research needs to be completed, so we aimed to evaluate laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair as a 24-h day surgery for this group of patients. METHODS In this retrospective cohort study, we utilized propensity score matching to analyze the data of patients who underwent laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair at a day surgery center between January 1, 2019, and March 1, 2022. Patients were divided into ≥ 80 years old and < 80 years old groups. We compared the perioperative laboratory results, perioperative outcomes, and 1-year complications between the two groups. RESULT A total of 554 patients were included in the study. After propensity score matching, 292 patients were included in the matched cohort (98 patients in the ≥ 80 years old group and 194 patients in the < 80 years old group). During hospitalization, there were significant differences in ASA classification, Caprini score, length of hospital stays, risk of thrombosis, and delayed discharge rate. No significant difference was found in the incidence of total postoperative complications between the two groups at the 1-year follow-up (HR: 0.96, 95% CI 0.36-2.54, P = 0.96). CONCLUSION In our study, LIHR as a 24-h day surgery was safe and effective for patients over 80 years old. However, to reduce the rate of delayed discharge, cautious perioperative evaluation is necessary.

Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S) Definitive concurrent chemoradiotherapy (dCCRT) is suggested as the standard treatment for cervical esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (CESCC). This retrospective propensity study compared the eight-year survival outcomes and acute treatment toxicities of these patients treated with elective nodal irradiation (ENI) versus involved-field irradiation (IFI). MATERIALS/METHODS Patients with stage Ⅱ-Ⅳ CESCC treated with dCCRT in our institution between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2020 were enrolled in the study. All the patients were restaged according to the American Joint Commission (AJCC) 8th edition criteria. The propensity score matching (PSM) was used to minimize the effects of treatment selection bias and potential confounding factors including sex, age, ECOG score, clinical T stage (cT), clinical N stage (cN), clinical TNM stage (cTNM) and radiation dose between the ENI group and IFI group. Survival and the prognostic factors were evaluated. RESULTS The 131 eligible patients underwent ENI (60 patients, 45.8%) or IFI (71 patients, 54.2%). The median follow-up time was 95.3 months (range, 28.0-186.2 months) for all the patients. The median OS, 1-, 3-, 5-, and 8-year OS rates were 44.4 months, 87.8%, 55.5%, 39.0%, and 28.3%, respectively. After PSM, there were 49 patients in each group. The median OS, 1-, 3-, 5-, and 8-year OS rates for ENI and IFI group were 32.0 months, 83.7%, 48.9%, 38.8% and 32.4% versus 45.2 months, 89.8%, 52.7%, 38.2%, 26.6%, respectively (P = 0.984; HR 0.99, 95% CI 0.61-1.62). Similar locoregional control was obtained in both groups. The tendency of leukocytopenia and neutropenia was higher in ENI than in IFI (59.2% versus 38.8%; P = 0.068 and 30.6% versus 14.3%; P = 0.089) at the end of dCCRT. CONCLUSION Cervical esophageal squamous cell carcinoma patients undergoing definitive concurrent chemoradiotherapy has a satisfactory prognosis with organ conservation. The involved-field irradiation might be a better alternative owing to similar overall survival outcomes and local control with less toxicity of myelosuppression.

Abstract
This paper aims to explore the effect and mechanism of water-soluble astaxanthin succinate diester (Asta-SD) on ulcerative colitis (UC) induced by dextran sodium sulfate in zebrafish and C57BL/6J mice. Asta-SD was synthesized with hydrophilic fatty acid succinic anhydride and the hydroxyl groups at the ends of F-Asta were synthesized by esterifying. Through the construction of a zebrafish intestinal inflammation model, it was found that Asta-SD could effectively reduce the levels of ROS and increase the number of healthy intestinal lysosomes in zebrafish. After continuous gavage of Asta-SD for seven days, the body weight, disease activity index, colonic length, colonic histopathology, expression of inflammatory factors, and intestinal flora of the mice were measured. The results showed that Asta-SD could significantly alleviate weight loss and colonic shrinkage, as well as reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines and recess injury in UC mice. The 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that Asta-SD significantly increased the beneficial bacteria (Lactobacillus, Anaerotruncus) and decreased the relative abundance of pathogenic bacteria, effectively maintaining intestinal microbiota homeostasis in mice. Based on Pearson analysis, Bacteroides, Parabacteroides, and Butyrimionas were expected to be associated with the significant difference in the expression of inflammatory factors between the UC and the corresponding host. Thus, Asta-SD significantly improves UC and maintains intestinal microbiota homeostasis.

Abstract
The electrical properties of large area molecular devices consisting of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) sandwiched between a double layer of alkanedithiol linkers have been examined. These devices have been fabricated by a facile bottom-up assembly in which an alkanedithiol monolayer is first self-assembled on an underlying gold substrate followed by nanoparticle adsorption and then finally assembly of the top alkanedithiol layer. These devices are then sandwiched between the bottom gold substrates and a top eGaIn probe contact and current-voltage (I-V) curves recorded. Devices have been fabricated with 1,5-pentanedithiol, 1,6-hexanedithiol, 1,8-octanedithiol and 1,10-decanedithiol linkers. In all cases the electrical conductance of the double SAM junctions with GNPs is higher than the corresponding and much thinner single alkanedithiol SAM. Competing models for this enhanced conductance are discussed and it is suggested to have a topological origin arising from how the devices assemble or structure during the fabrication, which gives more efficient cross device electron transport pathways without the GNPs producing short circuits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Compared with free astaxanthin (Asta), docosahexaenoic acid astaxanthin monoester (Asta-C22:6) has higher stability and bioavailability. However, Asta-E is still unable to be used in the water system. Hence it is necessary to build a water-soluble delivery system. In this study, Asta-C22:6 microemulsion and microcapsule using whey protein isolate (WPI) and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβ-CD) as composite wall material were prepared. They were added to three dairy products (milk powder, yogurt and flavored dairy product). A dairy product rich in Asta-C22:6 with high bioavailability was designed by measuring quality characteristics, sensory evaluation and in vivo experiments. RESULTS Compared with spray drying, the freeze-drying microcapsule had a higher encapsulation efficiency (72.5%), water content (4%) and better solubility, and Asta-C22:6 microcapsule (1 g L-1 ) yogurt had the best quality. The bioavailability of Asta-C22:6 microcapsule yogurt was further evaluated. After a single oral dose in mice, the bioavailability of Asta-C22:6 microcapsule in yogurt was significantly increased (Cmax = 0.31 μg mL-1 , AUC0-T = 3.20 h μg mL-1 ). CONCLUSION We successfully prepared Asta-C22:6 microcapsule yogurt, which improved the stability and bioavailability of Asta. The present research is meaningful for delivering unstable bioactive small molecules based on WPI and HPβ-CD. It provides an experimental basis for the application of Asta-C22:6 and the development of functional dairy products. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Astaxanthin ester derived from Haematococcus pluvialis is often used as a functional and nutritional ingredient in foods. However, its utilization is currently limited as a result of its chemical instability and low bioavailability. Food matrix microcapsules are becoming increasingly popular because of their safety and high encapsulation efficiency. In the present study, the effect of protein matrixes on the properties of microcapsules was evaluated. RESULTS We investigated the effects of storage on astaxanthin ester microcapsules and the corresponding rehydration solution at 40 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere, as well as in darkness. The results showed that the stability of products prepared based on whey protein (WP) and corn-gluten was superior to that of products prepared based on lactoferrin, soy protein and sodium caseinate. The bioavailability of astaxanthin ester microcapsules encapsulated with different proteins and examined by means of astaxanthin concentrations in the serum and liver after oral administration was compared. All five protein wall materials could significantly improve the bioavailability of astaxanthin ester. The microcapsules prepared based on WP had the highest bioavailability, with a value of 10.69 ± 0.75 μg·h mL-1 , which was 3.15 times higher compared to that of the control group. CONCLUSION The results of the present study showed that protein encapsulation, especially WP encapsulation, could effectively improve the stability, water solubility and bioavailability of astaxanthin esters. Thus, WP can be used as the main wall material in delivery systems. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Astaxanthin is a carotenoid widely found in marine organisms and microorganisms. With extensive use in nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and animal feed, astaxanthin will have the largest share in the global market for carotenoids in the near future. Owing to its unique molecular features, astaxanthin has excellent antioxidant activity and holds promise for use in biochemical studies. This review focuses on the observed health benefits of dietary astaxanthin, as well as its underlying bioactivity mechanisms. Recent studies have increased our understanding of the role of isomerization and esterification in the structure-function relationship of dietary astaxanthin. Gut microbiota may involve the fate of astaxanthin during digestion and absorption; thus, further knowledge is needed to establish accurate recommendations for dietary intake of both healthy and special populations. Associated with the regulation of redox balance and multiple biological mechanisms, astaxanthin is proposed to affect oxidative stress, inflammation, cell death, and lipid metabolism in humans, thus exerting benefits for skin condition, eye health, cardiovascular system, neurological function, exercise performance, and immune response. Additionally, preclinical trials predict its potential effects such as intestinal flora regulation and anti-diabetic activity. Therefore, astaxanthin is worthy of further investigation for boosting human health, and wide applications in the food industry.

Abstract
The invasive spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae) has caused serious economic losses to the fruit industry. The conventional control methods have many limitations and genetic engineering technologies such as CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene drive are promising approaches. In the CRISPR/Cas9 system, the transcriptional regulatory elements play an important role in the activities of gRNA. Thus, in order to improve the genome editing efficiency of the CRISPR/Cas9 system in D. suzukii, we cloned and tested four endogenous U6 promoters to drive mutagenesis of the white gene. Our results showed that all the four promoters could be used with variable efficiency. The promoter DsU6-3 had the highest genome editing efficiency among the four DsU6 promoters. Compared with the DsU6-3 promoter, the DmU6:3 promoter showed lower efficiency to drive mutagenesis in D. suzukii. These findings expand the range of promoters available to express gRNAs in D. suzukii, facilitating the basic and applied research on this important pest.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Astaxanthin (Asta) is widely used in the nutraceutical and food industry because of its strong antioxidant properties. However, natural Asta mainly exists in the esterified form with various fatty acid chains, making it difficult to understand the particular molecular structure of astaxanthin esters (Asta-Es) that have better antioxidant capacity. In this study, Asta-Es with different molecular structures was systematically prepared, and identified by using thin-layer chromatography (TLC), ultraviolet-visible (UV-visible), high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS), and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1 H-NMR). In addition, their antioxidant properties were evaluated by 2,2'-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ABTS scavenging activity. RESULTS Fourteen Asta-Es with different molecular structures were systematically synthesized. This study used a simple and efficient method for the separation and purification of astaxanthin monoester (Asta-ME) and astaxanthin diester (Asta-DE) with high purity (86%-94%) by silica gel column chromatography. 13-cis-Asta-E and 9-cis-Asta-E were firstly identified from Asta-E. The DPPH clearance rates and ABTS scavenging rates of Asta-C4:0, Asta-C8:0, Asta-C12:0, and Asta-C18:0 were relatively close, but the DPPH and ABTS scavenging rates of Asta-C18:0, Asta-C18:1, Asta-C18:2, and Asta-C22:6 increased gradually. Among all Asta-Es, Asta-C22:6/C22:6 showed the highest antioxidant capacity, with the DPPH and ABTS scavenging rates of 77.22 ± 3.29% and 51.84 ± 1.65%, respectively. CONCLUSION In this study, it was concluded that chemically synthesized Asta-Es contained cis-astaxanthin ester and polyunsaturated fatty acid chain increased the antioxidant activity of Asta, showing less effect of the length of fatty acid chain. These results provide useful information for the production and use of highly efficient Asta-E as functional food and pharmaceutical ingredients. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Astaxanthin ester (Asta-E) is used as functional nutraceuticals in many food products. Unfortunately, Asta-E utilization is currently limited owing to its chemical instability and low bioavailability. The purpose of this study is to investigate the promotion effect of oil matrixes on the stability, antioxidant activity, bioaccessibility and bioavailability of Asta-E. RESULTS The results showed that the stability of Asta-E in six oil matrixes was improved. Based on the 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity experiment, the antioxidant activity of Asta-E was positively correlated with the degree of unsaturation of the oil matrixes, but not with the side chain length. The in vitro gastrointestinal tract (GIT) simulation model and in vivo experiment using mice were also employed to investigate the digestion and absorption characteristics of Asta-E in various oil matrixes. The results demonstrated that the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of Asta-E increased with the increase of fatty acid chain length of oil matrixes (triglyceride oleate > triglyceride caprylate > triglyceride butyrate), as well as with the decrease of unsaturation degree (olive oil > corn oil > fish oil). CONCLUSION Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and long-chain triglyceride (LCT) in an oil matrix were the factors that could efficiently improve the bioavailability of Asta-E. Moreover, the size of the mixed micelles of Asta-E during digestion was the main factor influencing the bioaccessibility of Asta-E. This study provides references for the design of suitable oil matrixes for Asta-E. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE To evaluate the three-dimensional (3D) changes of the upper airway in patients with Class II malocclusion treated with functional appliances (FAs). SEARCH METHODS AND ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA A comprehensive search of seven electronic databases was conducted from the date of inception to 12 July 2020. Manual search was also performed in relevant Chinese and English periodicals. Prospective and retrospective studies evaluating the 3D airway changes after FAs applied on growing patients with skeletal Class II malocclusion were included. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Risk of bias assessment of each included study was performed referring to ROBINS-I. The effects of FAs on upper airway were evaluated by meta-analysis using STATA software. The outcome variables were the changes of oropharyngeal airway volumes (OAVs), nasopharyngeal airway volumes (NAVs), minimum cross-sectional area (MCA) and antero-posterior position of hyoid bone (HB). The overall quality of evidence for each outcome was rated based on Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation recommendations. RESULTS Nine studies were ultimately included in the systematic review and five were included and analyzed in meta-analysis. The results indicated that the pooled mean differences among these studies were 2162.80 [95 per cent confidence interval (CI): 1264.97, 3060.62), 382.20 (95 per cent CI: 140.95, 623.44), 59.91 (95 per cent CI: 41.45, 78.38), and 0.63 (95 per cent CI: -1.97, 3.23) for changes of OAVs, NAVs, MCA, and antero-posterior position of HB, respectively. CONCLUSION Weak evidence suggests that FAs can increase OAVs, NAVs, and MCA in growing patients with Class II malocclusion. Weak evidence also suggests that antero-posterior position of HB cannot be affected by FAs. Further studies are necessary to assess the stability of its effect on the upper airway in the long term. REGISTRATION The review protocol was not registered prior to the study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Hypertension is a growing health concern in people living with HIV (PLWH). However, association between HIV infection and hypertension is equivocal. METHODS In all, 1472 PLWH and 2944 HIV-negative individuals frequency-matched by age and sex were derived from the baseline survey of Comparative HIV and Aging Research in Taizhou (CHART), China. Prehypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure (BP) of 120-139 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure of 80-89 mmHg. RESULTS Despite the fact that prevalence of hypertension was overall lower among PLWH than among HIV-negative people (21.1% vs. 29.1%, P < 0.001), it was similar at ages 18-29 (7.6% vs. 8.5%) and 30-44 years (17.1% vs. 18.5%) but significantly lower in PLWH at ages 45-59 (26.1% vs. 40.7%) and 60-75 years (37.1% vs. 57.3%). Prehypertension prevalence was consistently higher in PLWH across all age groups. In the model adjusting for traditional risk factors, HIV infection was associated with hypertension (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.27, 95% confidence interval: 1.04-1.55) and prehypertension (aOR = 1.77, 95% CI: 1.51-2.08), and attenuated after additional adjustment for abdominal obesity. Age-stratified analysis showed that these associations of HIV with hypertension were observed at ages 18-29 and 30-44 years and associations with prehypertension were observed at ages 18-29, 30-44 and 45-59 years only. Years since HIV diagnosis and stavudine use were the HIV-specific factors independently associated with hypertension or/and prehypertension. CONCLUSIONS HIV infection is independently associated with prehypertension and hypertension especially at younger ages, and this risk may increase as treatment becomes prolonged. Our findings reinforce the urgent necessity for active BP screening and control strategies be adopted for PLWH in China.

Abstract
Atrial fibrillation is associated with atrial remodeling, in which connexin 43 (Cx43) and cell hypertrophy play important roles. In this study, apelin-13, an aliphatic peptide, was used to explore the protective effects of the adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/mTOR signaling pathway on Cx43 expression and autophagy, using murine atrial HL-1 cells. The expression of Cx43, AMPK, B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and pathway-related proteins was detected by Western blot analysis. Cellular fluorescence imaging was used to visualize Cx43 distribution and the cytoskeleton. Our results showed that the Cx43 expression was significantly decreased in HL-1 cells treated with angiotensin II but increased in cells additionally treated with apelin-13. Meanwhile, apelin-13 decreased BNP expression and increased AMPK expression. However, the expression of Cx43 and LC3 increased by apelin-13 was inhibited by treatment with compound C, an AMPK inhibitor. In addition, rapamycin, an mTOR inhibitor, promoted the development of autophagy, further inhibited the protective effect on Cx43 expression and increased cell hypertrophy. Thus, apelin-13 enhances Cx43 expression and autophagy via the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway, and serving as a potential therapeutic target for atrial fibrillation.

Abstract
Blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae), are the primary vectors of Lyme disease in the U.S.A. In this study, adult ticks were observed on public trails exhibiting increasing levels of terrain complexity with a potential host nearby. The goal of this study was to (a) examine the extent to which adult ticks may actively search (vs. sit-and-wait) for a nearby host, (b) determine whether or not ticks could locate the position of the host in natural conditions and (c) determine the role of terrain complexity on the distances ticks travelled in a short period of time (30 min). Results indicate that, when a potential stationary host is within 50 cm, ticks will utilize an active-search strategy. The majority of ticks moved in the direction of the host in natural conditions. Finally, ticks in a less complex terrain were more active and travelled greater horizontal distances than ticks in a more complex terrain. In conclusion, the use of an active-search approach would likely increase the foraging success of ticks, especially in terrains with minimal complexity, near host animals that have stopped to rest or feed, reinforcing that humans should be vigilant about checking for ticks after being outdoors.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of mandibular advancement device (MAD) therapy for obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) on hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), erythropoietin (EPO) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in myocardial tissue. New Zealand rabbits were used to develop OSAHS and MAD models. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) of the upper airway and polysomnography (PSG) recordings were performed with the animals in the supine position. All of the animals were induced to sleep in a supine position for 4-6 h each day and were observed continuously for 8 weeks. The myocardial tissue of the three groups was dissected to measure the expression of HIF-1α, EPO and VEGF. The results showed that there was higher expression of HIF-1α, EPO and VEGF in the OSAHS group than those in the MAD and control groups. MAD treatment significantly downregulated the expression of HIF-1α, EPO and VEGF in the OSAHS animals. We concluded that MAD treatment could significantly downregulate the increased expression of HIF-1α, EPO and VEGF in OSAHS rabbits, improving their myocardial function.

Abstract
The influence of different fatty acid carbon chains on the kinetic interactions of nanocomplexes between esterified astaxanthin (E-Asta) and β-lactoglobulin (β-Lg) were investigated by multi-spectroscopy and molecular modeling techniques. We synthesized ten different E-Asta bound to β-Lg and formed nanocomplexes (< 300 nm). Fluorescence spectroscopy showed moderate affinities (binding constants Ka = 103-104 M-1). Docosahexaenoic acid astaxanthin monoester (Asta-C22:6) had the strongest binding affinity towards β-Lg (Ka = 3.77 × 104 M-1). The fluorescence quenching of β-Lg upon binding of E-Asta displayed a static mechanism, with binding sites (n) equal to 1. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy revealed that E-Asta might enter the β-Lg hydrophobic cavity, leading to unfolding of the peptide chain skeleton. In summary, β-Lg and E-Asta can form stable nanocomplex emulsions to achieve an effective delivery process for E-Asta.

Abstract
To develop hydrophilic astaxanthin with significantly enhanced solubility and stability, astaxanthin polyethylene glycol succinate (APGS) was synthesized by esterification of an astaxanthin succinate diester with polyethylene glycol 1000. The chemical structure of the hydrophilic derivative was confirmed by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectra. APGS showed better solubility than free astaxanthin in water and enhanced bioavailability compared to that of free astaxanthin. Additionally, testing the effects on diabetes and inflammation in a high-fat- and high-sucrose-diet-induced insulin-resistant mouse model demonstrated its benefits, suggesting that APGS maintains the health-promoting properties of astaxanthin. These results suggest that APGS could be a better source of hydrophilic astaxanthin.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to compare banded versus modified appliances for anchorage during maxillary protraction in Class III malocclusions. PATIENTS AND METHODS The sample size consisted of 40 growing patients with Class III maxillary deficiency: 20 patients received maxillary protraction with a modified appliance and 20 patients with a banded appliance. Pre- and posttreatment cephalometric radiographs of all subjects were obtained and analyzed. The paired t‑test and Wilcoxon ranks test were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS The patients in the modified appliance group needed fewer appointments and shorter treatment time than those in the banded appliance group. The modified appliance was superior to the banded appliance with respect to simple structure, comfort, retention, and convenience in maintaining oral hygiene. The modified appliance was as effective as the banded appliance in correcting the Class III malocclusion. However, a greater increase was found in mandibular plane angle, anterior facial height, total facial height, mesialization of maxillary molars, and proclination of maxillary incisors in the banded appliance group compared with that in the modified appliance group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The newly developed modified appliance may be a promising approach in treating growing Class III patients with maxillary deficiency, which could decrease treatment time, increase treatment efficiency, and reduce anchorage loss.

Abstract
Although considerable research highlights the interactions between obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) and cardiovascular diseases, the effect of mandibular advancement device (MAD) treatment on cardiovascular complications in OSAHS patients remains unclear. We evaluated the effect of OSAHS treatment with MADs on the myocardium. All methods in this study were in accordance with relevant guidelines and regulations of the medical ethics committee in Hospital of Stomatology, Hebei Medical University approved the work. Thirty New Zealand rabbits were randomized into three groups: the control group, Group OSAHS, and Group MAD. Hydrophilic polyacrylamide gel was injected into the soft palate of the rabbits to induce OSAHS. In Group MAD, a MAD was positioned after OSAHS induction. All animals were induced to sleep in a supine position for 4–6 h/day for 8 weeks. Echocardiography was used to determine the structure and function of the heart. The histological changes were detected by optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The levels of ET-1(endothelin-1) and Ang II (Angiotensin II) in the plasma were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The expression of ET-1 mRNA in heart tissue was detected by RT-PCR. Histological abnormalities, left ventricular hypertrophy, and left ventricular dysfunctions were demonstrated in Group OSAHS, and the abnormities were rescued with MAD treatment. Higher levels of plasma ET-1 and Ang II and elevated expression of ET-1 mRNA in cardiac tissue were detected in Group OSAHS compared with Group MAD and the control group. The blood oxygen saturation was negatively correlated with the levels of ET-1 and Ang II. OSAHS-induced elevated levels of ET-1 and Ang II may be attributed to myocardial structural abnormalities and dysfunction. Early treatment of MADs may play an important role in preventing myocardial damage in OSAHS rabbit model.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Accumulating evidence showed aberrant expressions of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) strongly correlated to the development of cancers, including pancreatic cancer (PC). Whether lncRNA ABHD11-AS1 (ABHD11-AS1) is involved in PC remains to be elucidated. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the effects of ABHD11-AS1 on PC and the underlying molecular mechanism. PATIENTS AND METHODS RT-PCR was used to detect the expression level of ABHD11-AS1 in both PC tissue and cell lines. Then, the correlation of ABHD11-AS1 expression with clinicopathological features and prognosis was studied. Cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration and invasion abilities were detected by MTT, flow cytometry, and transwell assays. We further investigated the effect of abnormal ABHD11-AS1 expression through the PI3K/AKT and EMT pathway by Western blot assays in treated PC cells. RESULTS We found that the expression of ABHD11-AS1 was significantly increased in both PC tissues and cell lines. The clinical analysis revealed that a high level of ABHD11-AS1 expression was correlated with distant metastasis, TNM stage, and tumor differentiation. The Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that high ABHD11-AS1 expression levels predicted poorer survival. Moreover, univariate and multivariate analyses confirmed that the expression of ABHD11-AS1 was an independent and significant factor associated with poor overall survival rates. Loss-of-function experiments showed that the knockdown of ABHD11-AS1 suppressed PC cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and EMT in vitro. Mechanistically, the knockdown of ABHD11-AS1 decreased phospho(p) AKT and phospho(p) PI3K expression, but did not affect the AKT and PI3K expression in PC cells CONCLUSIONS: This study suggested that ABHD11-AS1 may potentially function as a valuable prognostic biomarker and a therapeutic target for PC patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the diagnostic test accuracy (DTA) of the FRAIL-NH and four frailty screening instruments among institutionalized older adults. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Institutionalized setting, Jinan, China. PARTICIPANTS A total of 305 older adults (mean age 79.3 ± 8.4 years, 57.0% female) were enrolled from nursing homes. MEASUREMENTS Frailty was assessed by the FRAIL-NH, Physical Frailty Phenotype (PFP), FRAIL, Tilburg Frailty Indicator (TFI), and Groningen Frailty Indicator (GFI), respectively. The Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) was used as a reference standard of frailty. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was plotted to examine the DTA of five frailty screening instruments against the CGA. The optimal cut-point was determined by the maximum value of the Youden index (YI, calculated as sensitivity + specificity - 1). RESULTS The prevalence of frailty ranged from 25.9% (FRAIL) to 56.4% (GFI). Areas under the curve (AUCs) against the CGA ranged from 0.80 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.74 - 0.85: FRAIL] to 0.83 (95% CI 0.78 - 0.88: PFP). At their original cut-points, all five frailty screening instruments presented low sensitivity (32.9% - 69.3%) and high specificity (80.0% - 93.8%), as well as high positive predictive values (90.7% - 94.9%) and low negative predictive values (33.2% - 48.1%). At their optimal cut-points, the sensitivity and specificity of the FRAIL-NH, PFP, and FRAIL tended to be balanced, and their correctly classified rates (76.1% - 81.3%) and kappa values (0.465 - 0.523) increased a lot. ROC contrasts showed that all five frailty screening instruments had similarly good diagnostic accuracy (χ2: 0.0003 - 1.38, P > .05). CONCLUSION In the institutionalized setting, the specific FRAIL-NH, self-report FRAIL, TFI, and GFI as well as hybrid PFP, show similarly good diagnostic properties in identifying frailty against the CGA.

Abstract
AIMS Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) can cause postweaning, multisystemic wasting syndrome in pigs, which leads to enormous losses in the swine industry worldwide. Here, a genetically engineered Lactococcus strain expressing the main protective antigen of PCV2, the Cap protein, was developed to act against PCV2 infection as an oral vaccine. METHODS AND RESULTS Expression of the Cap protein was confirmed via western blot, ELISA and fluorescence microscopy. Over 90% of the recombinant pAMJ399-Cap/MG1363 survived a simulated gastrointestinal transit. It also survived the murine intestinal tract for at least 11 days. Then, the safety and immunogenicity of pAMJ399-Cap/MG1363 in orally immunized mice was evaluated. The levels of the sIgA, IgG and cytokines (IL-4 and IFN-γ) obtained from the mice immunized with pAMJ399-Cap/MG1363 were significantly higher than those in the control groups. CONCLUSIONS pAMJ399-Cap/MG1363 can survive in the gastrointestinal transit and effectively induce mucosal, cellular and humoral immune response against PCV2 infection via oral administration. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This study demonstrates the potential of the genetically engineered Lactococcus lactis as a candidate for an oral vaccine against PCV2.

Abstract
AIMS We developed a strategy for localized delivery of the LFCA (lactoferricinlactoferrampin), which is actively synthesized in situ by Lactococcus lactis (pAMJ399-LFCA/LLMG1363), and explored the possibility of using pAMJ399-LFCA/LLMG1363 as an alternative additive diet to antibiotics. METHODS AND RESULTS The antimicrobial activities of the LFCA derived from pAMJ399-LFCA/LLMG1363 were tested in vitro. The results showed that LFCA had an inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Salmonella enteritidis. Then, the pAMJ399-LFCA/LLMG1363 was used as an additive diet for piglets. Our data demonstrated that oral administration of pAMJ399-LFCA/LLMG1363 significantly improved the average daily gain, feed-to-gain ratio, intestinal mucosal integrity and decreased the serum endotoxin and d-lactic acid levels. The mRNA expression levels of intestinal tight junction proteins (including occludin, Claudin-1 and ZO-1) were significantly upregulated by pAMJ399-LFCA/LLMG1363 administration. The serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels, intestinal secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) levels, IL-2, IL-10 and TGF-β levels were significantly increased by pAMJ399-LFCA/LLMG1363. Furthermore, our data revealed that oral administration of pAMJ399-LFCA/LLMG1363 significantly increased the number of general Lactobacillus, and decreased the total viable E. coli counts in the ileum and cecum contents. CONCLUSIONS We developed a novel pAMJ399-LFCA/LLMG1363 secreting LFCA, which had probiotic effects on the growth performance, intestinal morphology, intestinal barrier function and immunological indices of weaned piglets. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY pAMJ399-LFCA/LLMG1363, with probiotic effects on the health of weaned piglets, may be a promising feed additive for weaned piglets.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this paper, the changes in free astaxanthin (F-AST) and astaxanthin esters (AST-Es) in Litopenaeus vannamei during iced storage and frozen storage were investigated. The liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization tandem mass spectrometry method was used to quantify the molecular species of AST-Es in shrimp during storage. RESULTS Based on the analysis of autoxidation products, apo-12-astaxanthinal and apo-13-astaxanthinone docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) ester were identified as the major oxidation products of F-AST and AST-Es in L. vannamei during storage. The total astaxanthin (T-AST) content decreased by 34.51% after 7 days in iced storage. In contrast, the content of T-AST decreased by 43.76% after 12 weeks in frozen storage. The content of F-AST decreased by 29.99% while 13-cis-astaxanthin increased after 3 days in iced storage, which indicated that degradation of AST was accompanied by isomerization. Total volatile basic nitrogen and T-AST content showed a significant negative correlation while in frozen storage, where the concentration of T-AST might be one indicator to evaluate shrimp freshness. CONCLUSION The correlation coefficients between phenol oxidase, lipoxygenase, apo-12-astaxanthinal, and apo-13-astaxanthinone DHA ester were all greater than 0.97 (P < 0.01). This correlation indicates that phenol oxidase and lipoxygenase were the main internal factors to improve oxygenation of astaxanthin in L. vannamei. These results provide a theoretical basis for further study of oxidation and the degradation mechanism in astaxanthin, as well as a new idea for the development and utilization of astaxanthin compounds in Pacific white shrimp. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Objective: To observe the effect of the mandible advanced device on the reproductive system of the male New-Zealand rabbit with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). Methods: Thirty male New-Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into three groups (with 10 rabbits in each group): sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome group (group OSAHS), mandible advanced device group (group MAD) and control group. On the basis of the OSAHS animal model, mandible advanced devices were used for group MAD animals. After intervention for 8 weeks (sleeping by dorsal position, 4-6 hours/d), the samples were gained from the animals under general anesthesia and observed under the transmission electron microscope (TEM) and the AX-80 universal microscope. The cauda epididymis was obtained to be observed the number, viability, motility and abnormal rate of spermatozoa. Results: Compared with the control group, the upper airway space, the saturation of blood oxygen, partial pressure of oxygen, pH, the number, viability rate and motility rate of spermatozoa in cauda epididymis of the group OSAHS were significant decreased (all P<0.05), and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide and the rate of teratospermia was significant increased (both P<0.05). But compared with the control group, these indexes mentioned above in the group MAD showed no statistical significance (all P>0.05). TEM and the light microscope showed that the status of spermatogenic cell, seminiferous tubule and spermatogenic epithelium was improved in the group MAD. The correlation analysis showed that the saturation of blood oxygen had a negative correlation with the rate of teratospermia (r=-0.614, P<0.001). Conclusion: The damage of spermatogenic cells and the decrease of the sperm quality caused by OSAHS in New-Zealand rabbits could be improved by the mandible advanced devices.
