Abstract
A comparative evaluation of the mercury distribution in a soil sample from Almaden (Spain) has been performed by applying three different sequential extraction procedures, namely, modified BCR (three steps in sequence), Di Giulio-Ryan (four steps in sequence), and a specific SEP developed at CIEMAT (six steps in sequence). There were important differences in the mercury extraction results obtained by the three procedures according to the reagents applied and the sequence of their application. These findings highlight the difficulty of setting a universal SEP to obtain information on metal fractions of different mobility for any soil sample, as well as the requirement for knowledge about the mineralogical and chemical characteristics of the samples. The specific six-step CIEMAT sequential extraction procedure was applied to a soil profile (Ap, Ah, Bt1, and Bt2 horizons). The distribution of mercury and major, minor, and trace elements in the different fractions were determined. The results indicate that mercury is mainly released with 6 M HCl. The strong association of mercury with crystalline iron oxyhydroxides, present in all the horizons of the profile, and/or the solubility of some mercury compounds in such acid can explain this fact. Minor mercury is found in the fraction assigned to oxidizable matter and in the final insoluble residue (cinnabar).

Abstract
The population structure and habitat selection of Anisakis simplex in 35 harbor porpoises off Denmark are described. The nematodes were collected from the stomach and duodenal ampulla and were categorized as third-stage larvae, fourth-stage larvae, subadults, and adults. The porpoises harbored 8,043 specimens of A. simplex. The proportion of adults and subadults increased with infrapopulation size. The number of development stages across infrapopulations covaried significantly (Kendall's test of concordance). Concordance was higher in hosts with the highest intensities than in those with low and medium intensities. All stages occurred mainly in the forestomach, but this trend was stronger for the adults. Adult and subadult sex ratios did not depart significantly from 1:1. Our data suggested that recruitment and duration of each stage were the main factors accounting for infrapopulation structure. The preference of A. simplex for the forestomach conformed with previous studies, but the narrower distribution of adults relative to other stages might indicate a strategy to enhance mating opportunities. Information on sex ratios of A. simplex is scarce and contradictory. We suggest that the discrepancies might partly reflect differences in categorization criteria and statistical methods.

Abstract
Blood pressure is not adequately controlled in almost 50% of patients with hypertension who are in receipt of antihypertensive therapy. This multicentre, prospective, open-label trial was designed to determine whether or not once-daily telmisartan 80 mg reduced blood pressure during the last 6 h of the 24-h dosing interval in patients with mild-to-moderate hypertension who were unresponsive to previous antihypertensive therapy. The study comprised 100 patients (47 males, 53 females) who had failed to respond satisfactorily to prior treatment given for a minimum of 3 months. At screening, 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) was conducted after the patient had been treated with the currently prescribed antihypertensive medication. Following 5 weeks of telmisartan 80 mg treatment, ABPM was repeated. Telmisartan significantly reduced mean systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and pulse pressure compared with previous antihypertensive therapy over each time interval (24-h, morning, night-time and the last 6 h of the dosing interval [2.00 a.m.-8.00 a.m.]) analysed. In addition, more than 90% of patients responded successfully (clinic DBP <90 mmHg or a >10 mmHg reduction in clinic DBP) at the end of telmisartan treatment. In conclusion, telmisartan provides effective blood pressure control throughout the 24-h dosing interval in patients with mild-to-moderate hypertension who were unresponsive to previous antihypertensive medication.

Abstract
Samples of honeybees (Apis mellifera, n = 92) from 14 beehive monitoring stations located in 3 townships in the province of Bologna were analyzed from April to October 2000. The concentration of 32 organophosphorus pesticides and 5 carbamates was determined through liquid-liquid extraction followed by gas chromatography with a nitrogen-phosphorus detector and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry using atmospheric pressure chemical ionization in positive and negative ion modes. The most contaminated samples were from Granarolo Emilia where cereals (wheat, sorghum, and corn), sugar beets, and potatoes are the main agriculture products. Thirty-five pesticides were detected, with organophosphorus being the most abundant ones. Malathion was detected in 58% of the samples (mean level 0.360 mg/kg) followed by fenithrothion in 53% of the samples (mean level 0.544 mg/kg) and pirimiphos methyl in 48% of the samples (mean level 0.006 mg/kg). Temporal trends showed that the maximum detection frequency occurred in late spring and was associated with the use of treatment products and less rainfall. The obtained results demonstrated the feasibility of using honeybees for assessing pesticide exposure in agriculture settings.

Abstract
Different modalities for imaging cancer-bearing breast tissue samples are described and compared. The images include clinical mammograms and computed tomography (CT) images, CT images with partly coherent synchrotron radiation (SR), and CT and radiography images taken with SR using the diffraction enhanced imaging (DEI) method. The images are evaluated by a radiologist and compared with histopathological examination of the samples. Two cases of lobular carcinoma are studied in detail. The indications of cancer are very weak or invisible in the conventional images, but the morphological changes due to invasion of cancer become pronounced in the images taken by the DEI method. The strands penetrating adipose tissue are seen clearly in the DEI-CT images, and the histopathology confirms that some strands contain the so-called 'Indian file' formations of cancer cells. The radiation dose is carefully measured for each of the imaging modalities. The mean glandular dose (MGD) for 50% glandular breast tissue is about 1 mGy in conventional mammography and less than 0.25 mGy in projection DEI, while in the clinical CT imaging the MGD is very high, about 45 mGy. The entrance dose of 95 mGy in DEI-CT imaging gives rise to an MGD of 40 mGy, but the dose may be reduced by an order of magnitude, because the contrast is very large in most images.

Abstract
Eighteen mature Assaf rams were used to study the effect of undegradable protein (UDP) supply on testicular size, sperm production and quality, testosterone secretion and reproductive behavior. Animals were allocated to three groups of six animals each and fed during 10 weeks with different diets which were designed to supply approximately 0.5MJ of metabolisable energy (ME)/kg LBW(0.75) and 9g of effective rumen degradable protein (ERDP)/MJ of fermentable ME to all animals and to induce differences in rumen UDP intake (0.97, 1.72 and 3.08g of UDP/kg LBW(0.75) for LP, MP and HP diets, respectively). Neither plasma testosterone concentration nor reproductive behavior parameters (number of services, number of mounts without ejaculation and reaction time to first mount) were affected (P > 0.05) by protein intake. Nevertheless, there were significant (P < 0.05) differences between diets in both testicular size and sperm production. Scrotal circumference was lower in LP compared to MP and HP groups, no significant differences being observed between these latter two groups at any time. In relation to sperm production, the lowest and the highest values were always observed in LP and HP groups, respectively. MP group showed intermediate values, significantly different from those of LP and HP groups on Week 5 and only from those of LP group on Week 9. The present results provide a better understanding of the effect of protein nutrition and suggest that UDP should be supplied to Assaf rams during the mating season to improve their reproductive performance.

Abstract
In previous studies we demonstrated that IGF-I induces proliferation of pituitary lactotrophs. In addition to its mitotrophic actions, IGF-I is known to prevent apoptosis induced by diverse stimuli in several cell types. In this study, we investigated the action of IGF-I on pituitary cell survival and the intracellular signaling transduction pathway implicated in this effect. Treatment of cultured male rat pituitary cells with IGF-I (10(-7) M) for 24 h prevented pituitary cell death induced by serum deprivation. The protective effect of IGF-I was blocked by phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3-kinase) inhibitor, LY294002, but was unaffected by PD98059, which inhibits MAP/ERK kinase (MEK1). IGF-I activation of PI3-kinase induced the phosphorylation and activation of the serine/threonine kinase Akt. Moreover, IGF-I increased the phosphorylation of the pro-apoptotic factor Bad and the levels of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 through the PI3-kinase pathway in primary pituitary cells.

Abstract
Hydrophilic polymeric drugs bearing "Triflusal" (4-trifluoromethylsalicylic acid), a drug widely used as antithrombogenic agent (Disgren), have been prepared by free radical copolymerization of methacryloyloxyethyl [2-(acetyloxy)-4-(trifluoromethyl)] benzoate (HTRF) and N,N'-dimethylacrylamide (DMA). The reactivity ratios of both monomers have been determined by 1H NMR spectra by applying non-linear least square treatments to the copolymerization equation (terminal model), and the kinetic parameters obtained indicated that the microstructure of copolymer chains is homogeneous, with a random distribution of the active HTRF units along the copolymer chains. That means that for the copolymer system THDMA22 used in this work, HTRF units are mainly isolated in relatively long DMA sequences. Therefore, in this structure the intramolecular interactions between adjacent HTRF units are negligible. Release of Triflusal from THDMA22 has been studied in vitro using buffered solutions at pH = 2, 7.4 and 10 and 37 degrees C. The system showed an interesting pseudo-zero order release profile at pH = 7.4 during several months. It has been also evaluated the pharmacological activity and the behavior of the system in contact with biological media. In this sense, we have carried out some in vitro studies about the antiaggregant properties and biocompatibility of THDMA22. Results demonstrate that this copolymer inhibits platelet aggregation in its macromolecular form and presents a good biocompatibility with Human Osteoblastic Cells (HOS).

Abstract
Injectable bioactive acrylic formulations based on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and different amounts of bioactive glasses in the system SiO2-CaO-Na2O-P2O5 have been prepared in the presence of the anti-inflammatory analgesic drug fosfosal, the sodium salt of 2-phosphonoxibenzoic acid, to be used in minimally invasive surgery. The injectability of the formulations evaluated according to the established protocol was around 80%. The experimental formulations provided maximum temperatures in the range 50-60 degrees C, which were lower than those of commercial acrylic bone cements currently used in percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP). Residual monomer content of any formulation was inferior to 5%. Compressive yield strength of dry specimens was in the range 80-95 MPa, but it decreased after immersion in SBF to values in the range 30-50 MPa, due to the dissolution of the bioactive glasses and the drug in the medium. The release of fosfosal was evaluated in vitro (pH = 7.0). The release profile against time obtained from a PMMA cement was quasi-linear and the 80% of the initial amount of drug was released in 175 h. However, for bioactive cements, the 80-100% of the fosfosal charged was released in approximately 48 h, due to the dissolution of the glasses in the medium. Values of weight loss of the cements determined gravimetrically ranged between 16% and 26% depending on the initial amount of fosfosal, i.e. 20 or 30 wt%, respectively. The weight loss and the water uptake were simultaneous processes, and values of hydration degree were around 10-14%. The formation of an apatite-like layer was detected on the surface of the cements at different periods of time depending on the composition of the bioactive glasses. The cements containing the glasses with P2O5 produced the growth of the apatite layer in shorter periods of time. The presence of fosfosal accelerated the precipitation of this layer independently on the glasses. The in vivo biocompatibility studied by intramuscular implantation in rats showed the absence of an anti-inflammatory response and a fibrous layer around the implant for the cement prepared with PMMA/fosfosal which is attributed to the therapeutic action of fosfosal acting in situ. The response to cements prepared with bioactive glasses and fosfosal showed a mild inflammatory reaction with the formation of the typical fibrous capsule around the implanted material.

Abstract
The first two genes of the threonine pathway, ask and asd, were cloned and sequenced from the aminoethoxyvinylglycine-producing Streptomyces sp. NRRL 5331. The two genes are organized in a bicistronic operon. ask, encoding the apartokinase (ASK), is located upstream from asd. The presence of a ribosome-binding site within the ask sequence suggests that this open reading frame encodes two overlapping proteins. The formation of both subunits of the aspartokinase from a single gene was studied using antibodies raised against the C-terminal end of the aspartokinase subunits. Disruption of asd results in a significant decrease of aminoethoxyvinylglycine production, thus supporting the involvement of the ask-asd operon in the biosynthesis of this metabolite. This is the first report in which a gene cluster for the first two steps of aminoethoxyvinylglycine biosynthesis is characterized.

Abstract
Two approaches based on sorptive extraction, solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), in combination with liquid chromatography (LC)-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (MS) have been assayed for analyzing chlorpyriphos methyl, diazinon, fonofos, phenthoate, phosalone, and pirimiphos ethyl in honey. In both, SPME and SBSE, enrichment was performed using a poly(dimethylsiloxane) coating. Significant parameters affecting sorption process such as sample volume, sorption and desorption times, ionic strength, elution solvent, and dilution (water/honey) proportion were optimized and discussed. Performance of both methods has been compared through the determination of linearity, extraction efficiencies, and limits of quantification. Relative standard deviations for the studied compounds were from 3 to 10% by SPME and from 5 to 9% by SBSE. Both methods were linear in a range of at least two orders of magnitude, and the limits of quantification reached ranging from 0.04 to 0.4 mg kg(-1) by SBSE, and from 0.8 to 2 mg kg(-1) by SPME. The two procedures were applied for analyzing 15 commercial honeys of different botanical origin. SPME and SBSE in combination with LC-MS enabled a rapid and simple determination of organophosphorus pesticides in honey. SBSE showed higher concentration capability (large quantities of sample can be handled) and greater accuracy (between 5 and 20 times) and sensitivity (between 10 and 50 times) than SPME: thus, under equal conditions, SBSE is the recommended technique for pesticide analysis in honey.

Abstract
A new type of fine-rotation stage has been constructed and tested. It can be attached to standard goniometers used in X-ray and neutron crystallography. The device consists of a shaft and a bar that is fitted tightly to a hole traversing the shaft. The diameter of the shaft is 5 to 10 times larger than the diameter of the bar and the length of the bar is about 5 times larger than the height of the shaft. The bottom of the shaft is attached to the top plate of the goniometer and a goniometer head can be fitted to the other end of the shaft. The free end of the bar is pushed tangentially by a linear actuator to produce a torsion moment at the shaft. The dimensions and materials of the prototype were chosen such that a 1 mm bend of the bar corresponded to a torsion angle of the shaft of about 20 µrad. The rotation angle was measured using a double-crystal diffractometer in the non-dispersive setting, with MoKα1radiation from a fine-focus X-ray tube. Accurately known angular deviations were produced by refraction in a prism and the shifts in the rocking-curve position were measured. The measured torsion angle agreed within 4% with the value calculated from the elastic constants and dimensions of the device. The repeatability of the angle was ±20 nrad (0.004 arcsec).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Specific immunotherapy could be a therapeutic tool for the increasing problem of sensitisation to Natural Rubber Latex (NRL). OBJECTIVE To investigate the tolerability of SLIT for Latex and its effects on skin reactivity. METHODS Twenty-six patients (mean age 35.5 years) with an average history of 7.5 years of cutaneous symptoms plus respiratory symptoms (23/26) due to NRL were studied. All underwent rush sublingual therapy (4 days) with a standardized NRL extract followed by a 9-week maintenance treatment. Local and systemic adverse reactions were monitored throughout the treatment. Skin reactivity to NRL extract was evaluated before, during and at the end of the treatment by latex glove-use test, rubbing test and skin prick test. RESULTS All patients reached the maintenance dose. Out of 1044 administered doses, 257 (24.6%) produced adverse reactions from which 21.4% were local. Only 10.1% of cases required treatment, mainly with antihistamines alone (5.8%), with 2-agonists alone (0.8%) or associated to antihistamines and/or corticosteroids (2.7%). One patient was precautionary treated twice with adrenaline but completed the treatment without further problems. The glove-use test improved significantly after 5 days and 10 weeks of treatment (p = 0.003, p = 0.0004 respectively), whereas the rubbing test improved significantly only after 10 weeks of treatment. Doctor's assessments confirmed the results obtained with the glove-use test (p = 0.003 after 5 days, and p = 0.004 after 10 weeks) but not those obtained with the rubbing test. No change was detected for SPTs. CONCLUSION SLIT for NRL allergy is able to modify skin reactivity to NRL in days as assessed with methods reproducing HCWs normal exposure to the allergen. Tolerance of SLIT is better than tolerance reported for injective therapy with NRL, but the build up phase should be administered under medical surveillance until sufficient experience has been accumulated. The long-term effect of the treatment deserves further investigation.

Abstract
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is an ubiquitous agent and a pathogen in all age groups. Although CMV disease in normal adults is not very usual, the virus is well known to produce severe symptoms, mostly in immunocompromised patients. Chronic hemodialysed patients constitute a risk population for developing CMV infection, nevertheless, clinical manifestations are not usual. One chronic renal failure patient who developed acute and severe colitis due to CMV infection is presented. Of interest are, the rarity of this case, the favorable clinical course after the treatment and the differential diagnosis with other gastrointestinal disorders frequently found in renal patients.

Abstract
When facing any vascular lesion present in the first moments of life, it is necessary to determine whether one is dealing with a tumour or a vascular malformation, given the different evolution of both processes and, hence, the different treatments they require. Diagnosis is basically clinical, based on a correct anamnesis and a detailed physical exploration. The first thing is to establish whether the lesion was present at birth and has changed size significantly, which would lead one to think of a haemangioma or, on the contrary, whether it is congenital and of very slow growth, such as vascular malformations. Facing dubious lesions, it is recommendable to carry out a biopsy with immunohistochemistry for the GLUT-1 antibody, specific to haemangiomas. Amongst the image tests, the first choice is usually ecography-Doppler, which makes it possible to determine whether the lesion is of high or low flow and to distinguish whether one is dealing with a haemangioma or a vascular malformation. Depending on the type of lesion, its localisation and degree of affectation it might be necessary to carry out radiography, magnetic resonance, phlebography, angio-resonance, arteriography or lymphoscintigraphy to complete the study. In more particular cases, such as multiple haemangiomatosis, it is necessary to carry out an hepatic echography, blood concealed in faeces, gastroscopy and colonoscopy, as well a determination of thyroid hormones; and in venous or combined extensive malformations, a haemogram and coagulation tests. On the other hand, the possible repercussions on other organs make a multidisciplinary approach essential, with the participation of different specialists. Due to the wide spectrum covered by vascular anomalies, treatment must be individualised.
