[Effects of sodium salicylate on blood sugar]

The effect of constant perfusion of sodium salicylate on blood glucose has been studied in anestethyzed normale Wistar rats. The sodium salicylate perfused at the rate of 0,148 mg/min for 30 minutes has not statistically significant effect on glycemia.

[Free carbohydrates of the normal liver]

A separation of liver carbohydrates was carried by means of paper chromatography on deproteinized ethanolic extracts of frozen livers. The carbohydrates most frequently observed were Ribose, Xylose, Fructose, Glucose, Maltose, Maltotriose, Maltotetrose; isomaltose was found less frequently.

[Metabolism of glucose-3-H3 during perfusion of sodium salicylate]

The effect of sodium salicylate perfused at constant rate for 30 minutes on Glucose-3-H3 kinetics has been studied in anestethyzed normal Wistar rats, controlling blood glucose levels, Ra and Rd. While blood glucose levels and Rd were not affected, the Ra values were influenced between the 20th and the 30th minute of salicylate perfusion.

[The action of cyclic somatostatin on hypoglycemia due to prolonged fasting in normal animals]

The authors have examined the action of cyclic Somatostatin on blood glucose levels in normal rats and in rats starved for 36 and 50 hours. The infusion of 0,235 gamma/min. of Somatostatin for thirty minutes in the normals induced a slight increase in blood glucose levels that was statistically non significative. Under the same condition, the cyclic Somatostatin increased, in a statistically significant way, the levels of plasma glucose in both starved groups of rats.

[Paper chromatography of the urinary carbohydrates in normal subjects: the aldoses]

The authors describe a method that utilizes paper chromatography for the separation and identification of urinary carbohydrates, especially the Aldoses. Using 5 ml. of urinary extract, it is possible to separate Lactose, Maltose, Galactose, Glucose, Fructose, Mannose + Arabinose, Xilose + Ribose, Glucuronolactone and other unidentified compounds.

Vertex epidural hematomas

Fourteen cases of vertex epidural hematomas encountered in patients admitted over a 12-year period (1964-1976) at the University of Genoa Neurosurgical Clinic are presented. Special emphasis is put on the large number of cases (nine) without a free interval. Clinical and neuroradiological findings, treatment and results are reported. A clinical classification of this traumatic pathology according to the epidural hematoma classification of Pecker et al is proposed.

Magnification angiography of the small vessels in cerebrovascular disease in advanced age

Vascular changes in the cerebral arterioles (150 - 500 mu) were demonstrated by means of magnification serial cerebral angiography (focal spot 0.15 mm) in a consecutive series of 25 hypertensive patients of advanced age suffering from cerebrovascular disease. The changes identified were: (a) arteriosclerotic lesions, (b) arteriolar occlusion, and (c) miliary aneurysms. The enhancement of vascular details obtained is essential to arrive at exact diagnosis and accurate clinical management.

Choline acetyltrasferase activity in the neurointermediate lobe of the rat pituitary

CAT activity was determined in the neurointermediate lobe of the rat's pituitary gland. The level of enzyme activity in the adult rat is of 386.2 +/- 39.1 picomoles/hour/neurointermediate lobe. CAT activity is present in the pituitary gland of the newborn animal and increases with age. In organo-typic cultured neurointermediates lobes CAT decreases progressively and practically disappears after 10 days.

Clinical reduction of gingivitis through the use of a mouthwash containing two quaternary ammonium compounds

A commercially available antimicrobial mouthrinse was evaluated among students in Mexican boarding schools. The application was made daily for 3 months under the direct supervision of the project personnel. The observations indicated that the use of this mouthrinse decreased gingivitis substantially in comparison to the use of a control rinse which consisted of flavored water. It is concluded that this mouthwash, containing the known antimicrobial agents cetylpyridinium chloride and domiphen bromide, can be of clinical benefit if conscientiously applied as an adjunct in an oral hygiene regimen of regular toothbrushing with a dentifrice.

Angiotomographic study of the normal cerebral circulation. II. The vertebrobasilar system

Simultaneous tomography applied to normal vertebral angiography has, by the dissociation of the vascular planes, made a selective and spatial study of the vertebrobasilar circulation possible, and therefore, the identification of the vessels which are partly or totally hidden by other vascular structures. This technique has also led to a better delimitation and sometimes a direct observation and spatial localization of some anatomical structures above and below the tentorium.

[Identification of antigen of hepatitis MS2 in the menstrual blood]

35 samples of menstrual blood were examined and HBAg has been found (with the RIA method) always and only at the same time with venous antigenemia. HBAg has been also found in one only among four samples of cervicouterine secretions taken during antigenemia and far from the menstrual period.
