Abstract
Water consumption in a fish-processing industry and high-strength wastewater from such an industry are of great concern world-wide. Liquid effluent regulations are becoming more stringent day by day. Biological treatment is the best option for such a wastewater. Anaerobic processes such as upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, anaerobic filter (AF) and anaerobic fluidized bed (AFB) reactor can achieve high (80-90%) organics removal and produce biogas. Aerobic processes such as activated sludge, rotating biological contactor, trickling filter and lagoons are also suitable for organics removal. Anaerobic digestion followed by an aerobic process is an optimal process option for fish processing wastewater treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Does the K-means algorithm do a better job of differentiating benign and malignant neck pathologies compared to only mean ADC? The objective of our study was to analyze the differences between ADC partitions to evaluate whether the K-means technique can be of additional benefit to whole-lesion mean ADC alone in distinguishing benign and malignant neck pathologies. MATERIAL AND METHODS MR imaging studies of 10 benign and 10 malignant proved neck pathologies were postprocessed on a PC by using in-house software developed in Matlab. Two neuroradiologists manually contoured the lesions, with the ADC values within each lesion clustered into 2 (low, ADC-ADC(L); high, ADC-ADC(H)) and 3 partitions (ADC(L); intermediate, ADC-ADC(I); ADC(H)) by using the K-means clustering algorithm. An unpaired 2-tailed Student t test was performed for all metrics to determine statistical differences in the means of the benign and malignant pathologies. RESULTS A statistically significant difference between the mean ADC(L) clusters in benign and malignant pathologies was seen in the 3-cluster models of both readers (P = .03 and .022, respectively) and the 2-cluster model of reader 2 (P = .04), with the other metrics (ADC(H), ADC(I); whole-lesion mean ADC) not revealing any significant differences. ROC curves demonstrated the quantitative differences in mean ADC(H) and ADC(L) in both the 2- and 3-cluster models to be predictive of malignancy (2 clusters: P = .008, area under curve = 0.850; 3 clusters: P = .01, area under curve = 0.825). CONCLUSIONS The K-means clustering algorithm that generates partitions of large datasets may provide a better characterization of neck pathologies and may be of additional benefit in distinguishing benign and malignant neck pathologies compared with whole-lesion mean ADC alone.

Abstract
Magnetic bioglass ceramics (MBC) are being considered for use as thermoseeds in hyperthermia treatment of cancer. While the bioactivity in MBCs is attributed to the formation of the bone minerals such as crystalline apatite, wollastonite, etc. in a physiological environment, the magnetic property arises from the magnetite [Fe3O4] present in these implant materials. A new set of bioglasses with compositions 41CaO x (52-x)SiO2 x 4P2O5 x xFe2O3 x 3Na2O (2 < or = x < or = 10 mol% Fe2O3) have been prepared by melt quenching method. The as-quenched glasses were then heat treated at 1050 degrees C for 3 h to obtain the glass-ceramics. The structure and microstructure of the samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction and microscopy techniques. X-ray diffraction data revealed the presence of magnetite in the heat treated samples with x > or = 2 mol% Fe2O3. Room temperature magnetic property of the heat treated samples was investigated using a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer. Field scans up to 20 kOe revealed that the glass ceramic samples had a high saturation magnetization and low coercivity. Room temperature hysteresis cycles were also recorded at 500 Oe to ascertain the magnetic properties at clinically amenable field strengths. The area under the magnetic hysteresis loop is a measure of the heat generated by the MBC. The coercivity of the samples is another important factor for hyperthermia applications. The area under the loop increases with an increase in Fe2O3 molar concentration and the. coercivity decreases with an increase in Fe2O3 molar concentration The evolution of magnetic properties in these MBCs as a function of Fe2O3 molar concentration is discussed and correlated with the amount of magnetite present in them.

Abstract
A novel antifungal protein, amaryllin, has been isolated from the underground bulbs of Amaryllis belladonna, purified to homogeneity and crystallized. The protein was extracted using ammonium sulfate fractionation. The purified protein samples indicated a molecular weight of 15 kDa on SDS-PAGE. The protein showed antifungal activity against Aspergillus flavus and Fusarium oxysporum. The N-terminal sequence of the first 15 amino-acid residues was determined using Edman degradation and did not show significant sequence identity to any known protein. The protein was crystallized using the hanging-drop vapour-diffusion method with 30% PEG 8000 as precipitating agent. The crystals diffracted to 2.7 A resolution and belonged to the orthorhombic space group I222 or I2(1)2(1)2(1), with unit-cell parameters a = 48.6, b = 61.9, c = 79.6 A. The complete sequence and structure determination of amaryllin are in progress.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate cases of febrile illnesses in patients who received propofol for sedation during gastrointestinal endoscopy. METHODS Active case finding for patients who underwent endoscopy between 1 April and 30 May 2007 and suffered unexplained fever, chills, or myalgia within 48 hour after the procedure. We reviewed medications and clinical practices to find factors associated with the reactions. RESULTS Seventy-four cases at eight facilities in five states were identified yielding a rate of 36 reactions per 1000 procedures, compared with a baseline rate of 0.6 per 1000. The majority of patients experienced self-limited fever (89.2%), chills (73.0%), or myalgia (63.5%). Blood samples from five patients were collected for culture; no organisms grew. All health care facilities that reported cases and fully participated in the investigation (n = 7) had received a common lot of propofol just before recognition of the first case. Bacterial endotoxin and sterility testing on unopened vials from this lot of propofol showed no abnormalities. Cases terminated after facilities stopped using the associated lot of propofol. CONCLUSIONS We found a temporal association between a particular lot of propofol and an outbreak of febrile illnesses at several healthcare facilities performing endoscopy. When propofol is used to sedate patients for endoscopy, fever is a rare outcome and healthcare professionals should investigate clusters of these reactions. Post-procedure surveillance is important to identify possible medication reactions.

Abstract
The 40 kDa secretory signalling glycoprotein (SPS-40) is the first example with Trp78 in three functional orientations: (i) a resting state with a pinched conformation, (ii) a stacked conformation when bound to hexasaccharide and (iii) an obstructive conformation when inhibited by 2-methylpentane-2,4-diol (MPD). Trp78 is present in the core of the sugar-binding groove. The hexasaccharide N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc(6)) has been shown to bind to SPS-40. As a result of this, the conformation of Trp78 alters from the native pinched conformation (chi(1) = -65.5 degrees , chi(2,1) = -78.8 degrees , chi(2,2) = 97.5 degrees ) to the stacked conformation (chi(1) = -170.0 degrees , chi(2,1) = -114.3 degrees , chi(2,2) = 61.6 degrees ). Further binding experiments showed that saccharide binding does not occur in the presence of 20% MPD. The crystal structure determination of the complex of SPS-40 with MPD revealed the presence of two MPD molecules in the sugar-binding groove. The very tightly bound MPD molecules at subsites -2 and -1 induced an unexpected and a rarely observed conformation of Trp78 (chi(1) = 55.9 degrees , chi(2,1) = 90.2 degrees , chi(2,2) = -88.9 degrees ) which is termed an obstructive conformation. The binding of MPD molecules also twisted the side chains of Glu269 and Ile272 considerably. These residues are also part of the sugar-binding groove. The observed obstructive conformation of the side chain of Trp78 in the present structure is the exact opposite of the stacked conformation. This rarely observed conformation is stabilized by a number of hydrogen bonds between Trp78 and Asn79 through water molecules W49, W229, W269, W547 and W557.

Abstract
To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the structure of product-inhibited mammalian peroxidase. Lactoperoxidase is a heme containing an enzyme that catalyzes the inactivation of a wide range of microorganisms. In the presence of hydrogen peroxide, it preferentially converts thiocyanate ion into a toxic hypothiocyanate ion. Samples of bovine lactoperoxidase containing thiocyanate (SCN(-)) and hypothiocyanate (OSCN(-)) ions were purified and crystallized. The structure was determined at 2.3-A resolution and refined to R(cryst) and R(free) factors of 0.184 and 0.221, respectively. The determination of structure revealed the presence of an OSCN(-) ion at the distal heme cavity. The presence of OSCN(-) ions in crystal samples was also confirmed by chemical and spectroscopic analysis. The OSCN(-) ion interacts with the heme iron, Gln-105 N(epsilon1), His-109 N(epsilon2), and a water molecule W96. The sulfur atom of the OSCN(-) ion forms a hypervalent bond with a nitrogen atom of the pyrrole ring D of the heme moiety at an S-N distance of 2.8 A. The heme group is covalently bound to the protein through two ester linkages involving carboxylic groups of Glu-258 and Asp-108 and the modified methyl groups of pyrrole rings A and C, respectively. The heme moiety is significantly distorted from planarity, whereas pyrrole rings A, B, C, and D are essentially planar. The iron atom is displaced by approximately 0.2 A from the plane of the heme group toward the proximal site. The substrate channel resembles a long tunnel whose inner walls contain predominantly aromatic residues such as Phe-113, Phe-239, Phe-254, Phe-380, Phe-381, Phe-422, and Pro-424. A phosphorylated Ser-198 was evident at the surface, in the proximity of the calcium-binding channel.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the increased clinical use of 3-Tesla (3T) magnets, it becomes important to identify the potential applications of advanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging techniques such as diffusion-weighted imaging in head and neck pathologies. PURPOSE To establish the 3T apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values for normal neck structures, and to examine the utility of ADC values in distinguishing head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) from normal neck anatomy. MATERIAL AND METHODS 3T diffusion-weighted imaging was performed on 10 normal volunteers and 10 patients with known HNSCC. In the volunteers, mean ADC was calculated in the parotid gland, submandibular gland, base of the tongue, pterygoid muscle, masseter muscle, paraspinal muscles, true vocal cord, thyroid gland, thyroid cartilage, cricoid cartilage, and lymph nodes. The mean tumor ADC value was calculated from the 10 patients with HNSCC and compared with the normal ADC values from various neck structures. RESULTS The mean ADC value measured in the HNSCC was 1.101 (+/-0.214) x 10(-3) mm(2)/s. This was significantly lower than ADC values of paraspinal muscles, pterygoid muscle, masseter muscle, thyroid gland, and base of the tongue (P=0.0006, 0.0002, 0.0001, 0.001, and 0.002, respectively). The tumor ADC values were not significantly different from ADC values of parotid and submandibular glands (P=0.057 and 0.14, respectively). CONCLUSION 3T ADC values show potential for distinguishing HNSCC from normal extracranial head and neck structures.

Abstract
Experience in the physical sciences suggests that the only realistic means of understanding complex systems is through the use of mathematical models. Typically, this has come to mean the identification of quantitative models expressed as differential equations. Quantitative modelling works best when the structure of the model (i.e., the form of the equations) is known; and the primary concern is one of estimating the values of the parameters in the model. For complex biological systems, the model-structure is rarely known and the modeler has to deal with both model-identification and parameter-estimation. In this paper we are concerned with providing automated assistance to the first of these problems. Specifically, we examine the identification by machine of the structural relationships between experimentally observed variables. These relationship will be expressed in the form of qualitative abstractions of a quantitative model. Such qualitative models may not only provide clues to the precise quantitative model, but also assist in understanding the essence of that model. Our position in this paper is that background knowledge incorporating system modelling principles can be used to constrain effectively the set of good qualitative models. Utilising the model-identification framework provided by Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) we present empirical support for this position using a series of increasingly complex artificial datasets. The results are obtained with qualitative and quantitative data subject to varying amounts of noise and different degrees of sparsity. The results also point to the presence of a set of qualitative states, which we term kernel subsets, that may be necessary for a qualitative model-learner to learn correct models. We demonstrate scalability of the method to biological system modelling by identification of the glycolysis metabolic pathway from data.

Abstract
We report the structural and magnetic properties of the nanocrystalline Fe75Si15M10 (M-Al and Cr) powders prepared by mechanical alloying. The milling process produced a non-equilibrium solid solutions of bcc alpha-Fe(Si,Cr) and alpha-Fe(Si,Al). The average dislocation density increases and the average crystallite size decreases with increasing milling time. Magnetic property studies show that the coercivity of the sample increases and magnetization of the sample decreases with increasing milling time. The evolution of a non-equilibrium solid solution and the resulting magnetic properties of nanocrystalline powders are explained on the basis of Neel theory and modified random anisotropy model proposed by Shen et al.

Abstract
Sagitoxin, a novel cardiotoxin from the venom of Naja naja saggitifera, has been successfully isolated, purified to homogeneity and crystallized. The toxin was purified using successive separation steps on a CM-Sephadex C-50 column and a reverse-phase column. The 6.75 kDa toxin was sequenced by the Edman method using a PPSQ-21 protein sequencer. It was crystallized using the hanging-drop vapour-diffusion method. The hexagonal-shaped crystals diffracted to 3.0 A resolution and belonged to space group P6(4), with unit-cell parameters a = b = 111.1, c = 137.3 A, gamma = 120 degrees . There are 36 molecules in the unit cell, which has an approximate solvent content of 80%. Structure determination revealed that the molecules of sagitoxin associate in a hexameric form and create a pore in the centre which has functional significance.

Abstract
The mammalian peptidoglycan recognition protein-S (PGRP-S) binds to peptidoglycans (PGNs), which are essential components of the cell wall of bacteria. The protein was isolated from the samples of milk obtained from camels with mastitis and purified to homogeneity and crystallized. The crystals belong to orthorhombic space group I222 with a=87.0 A, b=101.7 A and c=162.3 A having four crystallographically independent molecules in the asymmetric unit. The structure has been determined using X-ray crystallographic data and refined to 1.8 A resolution. Overall, the structures of all the four crystallographically independent molecules are identical. The folding of PGRP-S consists of a central beta-sheet with five beta-strands, four parallel and one antiparallel, and three alpha-helices. This protein fold provides two functional sites. The first of these is the PGN-binding site, located on the groove that opens on the surface in the direction opposite to the location of the N terminus. The second site is implicated to be involved in the binding of non-PGN molecules, it also includes putative N-terminal segment residues (1-31) and helix alpha2 in the extended binding. The structure reveals a novel arrangement of PGRP-S molecules in which two pairs of molecules associate to form two independent dimers. The first dimer is formed by two molecules with N-terminal segments at the interface in which non-PGN binding sites are buried completely, whereas the PGN-binding sites of two participating molecules are fully exposed at the opposite ends of the dimer. In the second dimer, PGN-binding sites are buried at the interface while non-PGN binding sites are fully exposed at the opposite ends of the dimer. This form of dimeric arrangement is unique and seems to be aimed at enhancing the capability of the protein against specific invading bacteria. This mode of functional dimerization enhances efficiency and specificity, and is observed for the first time in the family of PGRP molecules.
