Abstract
Tripolar electrodes have been shown to have less mutual information and higher spatial resolution than disc electrodes. In this work, a four-layer anisotropic concentric spherical head computer model was programmed, then four configurations of time-varying dipole signals were used to generate the scalp surface signals that would be obtained with tripolar and disc electrodes, and four important EEG artifacts were tested: eye blinking, cheek movements, jaw movements, and talking. Finally, a fast fixed-point algorithm was used for signal independent component analysis (ICA). The results show that signals from tripolar electrodes generated better ICA separation results than from disc electrodes for EEG signals with these four types of artifacts.

Abstract
We studied the field induced magnetic order in R(2)Ti(2)O(7) pyrochlore compounds with either uniaxial (R=Ho, Tb) or planar (R=Er, Yb) anisotropy, by polarized neutron diffraction. The determination of the local susceptibility tensor {chi(parallel to),chi(perpendicular)} provides a universal description of the field induced structures in the paramagnetic phase (2-270 K), whatever the field value (1-7 T) and direction. Comparison of the thermal variations of chi(parallel to) and chi(perpendicular) with calculations using the rare earth crystal field shows that exchange and dipolar interactions must be taken into account. We determine the molecular field tensor in each case and show that it can be strongly anisotropic.

Abstract
3529 Background: Chidamide (CS055/HBI-8000) is a new benzamide type of histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor with low nanomolar activity against HDAC1, 2, 3 and 10. This Phase I study evaluated the safety and tolerability of chidamide in patients (pts) with advanced solid tumors and lymphomas. Methods: 31 pts with refractory or relapsed advanced solid tumors (22) and lymphomas (9) were enrolled in this study. Escalating doses of 5, 10, 17.5, 25, 32.5 and 50 mg Chidamide (each with 3 to 7 pts) were administered orally either twice or three times per week for 4 consecutive weeks every 6 weeks. Results: No dose limiting toxicities (DLTs) were identified in the 2 x per week cohorts (22 pts) up to 50 mg; G2 and G3 hematological toxicities (leukopenia/neutropenia and thrombocytopenia) were observed at 50 mg. DLTs were reported as G3 diarrhea or vomiting in 2 pts in the 3 x per week cohort at 50 mg. Common adverse events were G1/G2, fatigue (n = 11), thrombocytopenia (n = 9), anorexia (n = 8), nausea/vomiting (n = 7), leukopenia/neutropenia (n = 6), hypochromia (n = 6), and diarrhea (n = 5). No cystitis, pericarditis, pericardial effusion or prolonged QTc intervals were observed. Single dose PK analysis in pts with 25, 32.5 and 50 mg revealed T1/2 of 16.8–18.3 h, Tmax of 1–2 h in most cases, and a dose-related increase in Cmax and AUC. Multiple dose PK analysis in pts with 32.5 mg 3 x per week suggested drug accumulation with this regimen. Significant induction of histone (H3) acetylation was observed in peripheral white blood cells, which lasted for 2–3 days in most pts after single dosing. 25 pts with total treatment cycles of 49 (range 1–6) were evaluable for efficacy. 4 pts with T-cell lymphomas (4/5 evaluable) and 1 pt with submandibular adenoid cystic carcinoma achieved PR, and 11 pts (2 B-cell lymphomas and 9 solid tumors) experienced SD. Conclusions: Chidamide was well-tolerated in pts with advanced solid tumors and lymphomas in the tested regimens. In addition, the compound exhibited a relatively long half-life, a long-lasting biomarker response and encouraging antitumor activity at well-tolerated doses. The overall phase I results recommend the 2 x per week regimen for phase II studies. [Table: see text]

Abstract
4624 Background: MicroRNAs (miRs) are small non-coding transcripts involved in many cellular mechanisms, including tumorigenesis. miR-210, in particular, has been shown to be induced by hypoxia, over-expressed in several different cancers, and correlated with adverse outcomes in breast cancer. Moreover, since pancreatic adenocarcinomas have been previously shown to be extremely hypoxic, we hypothesized that miR-210 may be elevated in the plasma of these patients compared to non-cancer controls. Here, we compared the circulating plasma levels of miR-210 in pancreatic cancer patients and controls using a novel miRNA extraction approach and quantitative PCR. Methods: Pretreatment EDTA plasma samples were obtained from pancreatic cancer patients and age-matched non-cancer controls. miRNA was extracted from 40ul of plasma and reverse transcribed to cDNA. A known quantity of c. elegans miR-54 was added to the sample as a normalization control. miR-210 and cel-miR-54 were then quantified using TaqMan MicroRNA Assays. The procedure was performed on the initial 11 pairs of age-matched pancreatic cancer patients and non- cancer controls, then validated with a second cohort of 12 pancreatic cancer patients and 11 controls. Results: miR-210 was reliably detected and quantified in small amounts of plasma using the approach developed in our study. There is a statistically significant four-fold increase of mir-210 expression in pancreatic cancer patients compared to normal controls (Student's t-test, p <0.0001). This difference was confirmed in the validation group (Student's t-test, p<0.05). Conclusions: Circulating miR-210 levels can be readily measured from a small quantity of plasma using a novel extraction method. Its expression is significantly higher in the blood of pancreatic cancer patients compared to controls and may potentially serve as a useful biomarker for pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation plays a role in the pathogenesis of coronary atherosclerosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Six hundred twenty-three patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) referred for coronary angiography for the first time in our hospital were enrolled in this study. White blood cell and its subtypes were measured on admission. The study population was divided into three groups based on total white blood cell count and followed up. Clinical end points were major adverse cardiac events (MACEs), including cardiogenic death, stroke, heart failure, non-fatal myocardial infarction, rehospitalization for angina pectoris. RESULTS The median age was 68 years (range 31-92) and 64.2% of the patients were men. The median white blood cell count was 6.48 x 10(9 )L(-1) (range 2.34-27.10 x 10(9 )L(-1)). The median follow-up duration was 21 months (range 1-116) and MACEs occurred in 167 patients. The multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression model revealed that neutrophil count [Relative risk = 1.098, 95% Confidence interval (CI): 1.010-1.193, P = 0.029) was a risk factor for MACEs. The logistic regression model revealed that lymphocyte count [Odds ratio (OR) = 1.075, 95% CI: 1.012-1.142, P = 0.018] and monocyte count (OR = 8.578, 95% CI: 2.687-27.381, P < 0.001) were predictive of stenosis >or= 75%; Neutrophil proportion (OR = 1.060, 95% CI: 1.007-1.115, P = 0.026), monocyte count (OR = 12.370, 95% CI: 1.298-118.761, P = 0.029) were predictive of the presence of multivessel disease. Kaplan-Meier analysis of short-term and long-term cumulative survival showed no significant statistical differences among three groups. CONCLUSIONS Neutrophil count adds prognostic information to MACEs in ACS. Monocyte count and lymphocyte count are predictive of severity of coronary atherosclerosis.

Abstract
The difficulty of description of the radiative transfer in disordered photonic crystals arises from the necessity to consider on an equal footing the wave scattering by periodic modulations of the dielectric function and by its random inhomogeneities. We resolve this difficulty by approaching this problem from the standpoint of the general multiple scattering theory in media with an arbitrary regular profile of the dielectric function. We use the general asymptotic solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in order to show that for a sufficiently weak disorder the diffusion limit in disordered photonic crystals is presented by incoherent superpositions of the modes of the ideal structure with weights inversely proportional to the respective group velocities. The radiative transfer and the diffusion equations are derived as a relaxation of long scale deviations from this limiting distribution. In particular, it is shown that in general the diffusion is anisotropic unless the crystal has sufficiently rich symmetry, say, the square lattice in 2D or the cubic lattice in 3D. In this case, the diffusion is isotropic and only in this case can the effect of the disorder be characterized by a single mean free path depending on frequency.

Abstract
The overall herpes simplex virus (HSV)-2 seroprevalence was 5.5% among male rural migrants working in construction sites, markets and factories, 5.4% among those reporting having had sexual intercourse and 5.8% among those reporting no sexual intercourse. Multiple logistic regression analyses indicate that migrants having higher income were more likely to have HSV-2 infection. None of the HSV-2-positives realized their infection status. Future sexually transmitted disease (STD) intervention programmes should target migrants with higher income and migrant market vendors and should not exclude those who self-report no STDs or no history of sexual intercourse.

Abstract
We report neutron diffuse scattering measurements on highly magnetostrictive Fe1-xGax alloys (0.14<x<0.20) with different thermal treatments. This diffuse scattering scales with magnetostriction and exhibits asymmetric peaks at the (100) and (300) reciprocal lattice positions that are consistent with the coexistence of short-range ordered, coherent nanometer-scale precipitates embedded in a long-range ordered, body-centered cubic matrix. A large peak splitting is observed at (300) for x=0.19, which indicates that the nanoprecipitates are not cubic and have a large elastic strain. This implies a structural origin for the enhanced magnetostriction.

Abstract
We have studied the field-induced magnetic structures in Tb2Ti2O7, in a wide temperature (0.3 < T < 270 K) and field (0 < H < 7 T) range, by single crystal polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction, with H parallel[110] axis. A ferromagneticlike structure with k = 0 propagation vector is induced, whose local order at low field and low temperature is akin to spin ice. The four Tb ions separate in alpha and beta chains having different values of the magnetic moments, which is quantitatively explained by taking the crystal field anisotropy into account. Above 2 T and below 2 K, an antiferromagneticlike structure with k = (0,0,1) is induced besides the k = 0 structure. It shows a reentrant behavior and extends over a finite length scale. It occurs together with a broadening of the nuclear peaks, which suggests a field-induced distortion and magnetostriction effect.

Abstract
Yin Chen Hao Tang preparation (YCHTP) is a classic traditional Chinese medicine formula, which is commonly used for clinical treatment of hepatological diseases. In this study, a rapid and validated high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was developed to simultaneously identify 6,7-dimethylesculetin and geniposide in rat plasma. This assay was performed on a Dikma Diamonsil RP(18) column (200 mm×4.6 mm, 5 μm) with acetonitrile-methanol-water (0.1% formic acid) as the mobile phase, showing acceptable linearity, intra- and inter-day precision and accuracy (R.S.D.=5%), and absolute recovery for two analytes (74%); the limits of quantitation were 0.4 and 1.12 μg/ml, and the limits of detection were 0.06 and 0.09 μg/ml for two analytes. The developed method was successfully applied to study the effect of formula compatibility on the pharmacokinetics of 6,7-dimethylesculetin and geniposide in YCHTP when orally administrating an effective human daily dose of YCHTP to rats. We surmise that formula compatibility can significantly influence the pharmacokinetics of YCHTP, and we have elucidated and validated the compatible administration of YCHTP.

Abstract
Our previous study demonstrated that single intrathecal (i.t.) application of fluorocitrate, a glial metabolic inhibitor, synergized electroacupuncture (EA) antagonizing behavioral hypersensitivity in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA)-induced monoarthritic rat. To further investigate the relationship between spinal glial activation and EA analgesia, the present study examined the effects of multiple EA on spinal glial activation evoked by monoarthritis (MA). The results showed that (1) unilateral intra-articular injection of CFA produced a robust glial activation on the spinal cord, which was associated with the development and maintenance of behavioral hypersensitivity; (2) multiple EA stimulation of ipsilateral "Huantiao" (GB30) and "Yanglingquan" (GB34) acupoints or i.t. injection of fluorocitrate (1 nmol) significantly suppressed spinal glial activation; (3) inhibitory effects of EA on spinal glial activation and behavioral hypersensitivity were significantly enhanced when EA combined with fluorocitrate, indicating that disruption of glial function may potentiate EA analgesia in inflammatory pain states. These data suggested that analgesic effects of EA might be associated with its counter-regulation to spinal glial activation, and thereby provide a potential strategy for the treatment of arthritis.

Abstract
Background: In Dunnigan-type familial partial lipodystrophy (FPLD) patients are born with normal fat distribution, but subcutaneous fat from extremities and gluteal regions are lost during puberty. The abnormal fat distribution leads to the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS), a cluster of phenotypes including hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and visceral obesity. The study of FPLD as a monogenic model of MetS may uncover genetic risk factors of the common MetS which affects ~30% of adult North Americans. Two molecular forms of FPLD have been identified including FPLD2, resulting from heterozygous mutations in the LMNA gene, and FPLD3, resulting from both heterozygous dominant negative and haploinsufficiency mutations in the PPARG gene. However, many patients with clinically diagnosed FPLD have no mutation in either LMNA or PPARG, suggesting the involvement of additional genes in FPLD etiology.
Methods: Here, we report the results of an Affymetrix 10K GeneChip microarray genome-wide linkage analysis study of a German kindred displaying the FPLD phenotype and no known lipodystrophy-causing mutations.
Results: The investigation identified three chromosomal loci, namely 1q, 3p, and 9q, with non-parametric logarithm of odds (NPL) scores >2.7. While not meeting the criteria for genome-wide significance, it is interesting to note that the 1q and 3p peaks contain the LMNA and PPARG genes respectively.
Conclusions: Three possible conclusions can be drawn from these results: 1) the peaks identified are spurious findings, 2) additional genes physically close to LMNA, PPARG, or within 9q, are involved in FPLD etiology, or 3) alternative disease causing mechanisms not identified by standard exon sequencing approaches, such as promoter mutations, alternative splicing, or epigenetics, are also responsible for FPLD.

Abstract
Adenoviral vector-mediated gene delivery has been vastly investigated for cystic fibrosis (CF) gene therapy; however, one of its drawbacks is the low efficiency of gene transfer, which is due to basolateral colocalization of viral receptors, immune responses to viral vectors and the presence of a thick mucus layer in the airways of CF patients. Therefore, enhancement of gene transfer can lead to reduction in the viral dosage, which could further reduce the acute toxicity associated with the use of adenoviral vectors. Nacystelyn (NAL) is a mucolytic agent with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and has been used clinically in CF patients to reduce mucus viscosity in the airways. In this study, we show that pretreatment of the airways with NAL followed by administration of adenoviral vectors in complex with DEAE-Dextran can significantly enhance gene delivery to the airways of mice without any harmful effects. Moreover, NAL pretreatment can reduce the airway inflammation, which is normally observed after delivery of adenoviral particles. Taken together, these results indicate that NAL pretreatment followed by adenoviral vector-mediated gene delivery can be beneficial to CF patients by increasing the efficiency of gene transfer to the airways, and reducing the acute toxicity associated with the administration of adenoviral vectors.

Abstract
Chronic HIV infection is associated with T cell abnormalities and altered effector function. Regulatory T cells (Treg) are CD4+ T cells that play a critical role in regulating the immune system. The impact of regulatory T cells on HIV infection and disease progression may be highly significant. We hypothesize that chronic antigenic stimulation from a persistent, high viraemic state may promote a population of Treg that contributes to HIV-associated immune dysfunction. We evaluated the pattern of Treg in chronically infected, HIV-positive individuals over a course of 6 months. Treg are depleted at a distinct rate from that of absolute CD4 cells and loss of Treg is slower in the presence of viral suppression. In vitro depletion of CD25+ CD4+ cells resulted in increased Gag-specific CD4 and CD8 responses. A significant correlation between ex vivo measurement of Treg and Gag-specific CD4 T cell responses was observed (r=-0 x 41, P=0 x 018) with a trend observed with Gag-specific CD8 T cell responses (P=0 x 07). The impact of HIV infection on the Treg population directly complicates the measured effect of Treg on the immune dysfunction although our data support the important role of Treg on modulating the effector T cell response in chronic infection.
