Antigravity posture for analysis of motor unit recruitment: the "45 degree test"

The maximum number of different motor unit action potentials (MUAPs), their firing rates, and total MUAP spikes/second recorded by monopolar needle electrode were determined for the biceps brachii muscle during 45-degree elbow flexion. There were 4.2 +/- 1.6 different MUAPs exceeding 100 microV. Mean firing rate was 10.0 +/- 1.7 Hz, and total MUAP spikes/second were 40.3 +/- 18. Recordings from 16 patients with neurogenic atrophy (NA) and just detectable weakness revealed corresponding values of 3.1 +/- 1.7 different MUAPs, a mean rate of 10.2 +/- 1.5 Hz and 30.6 +/- 19 total MUAP spikes/second, not different from normal. In these patients, increased force of muscle contraction was required to activate high threshold motor units firing at high rates. In each of 4 patients just able to hold the arm against gravity, 1 or 2 "overdriven" motor units firing at a mean rate greater than 20 Hz were recorded. In 8 patients with myopathy and just detectable weakness, greater than 100 total MUAP spikes/second were recorded. Antigravity posture as a reference level of innervation has the advantage that motor unit firing rate is set about that of physiologic tremor (10-13 Hz). Its application was helpful in quantifying recruitment.

Effect of mechanical loading on expiratory and inspiratory muscle activity during NREM sleep

We investigated the effect of acute and sustained inspiratory resistive loading (IRL) on the activity of expiratory abdominal muscles (EMGab) and the diaphragm (EMGdi) and on ventilation during wakefulness and non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep in healthy subjects. EMGdi and EMGab were measured with esophageal and transcutaneous electrodes, respectively. During wakefulness, EMGdi increased in response to acute loading (18 cmH2O.l-1.s) (+23%); this was accompanied by preservation of tidal volume (VT) and minute ventilation (VE). During NREM sleep, no augmentation was noted in EMGdi or EMGab. Inspiratory time (TI) was prolonged (+5%), but this was not sufficient to prevent a decrease in both VT and VE (-21 and -20%, respectively). During sustained loading (12 cmH2O.l-1 s) in NREM sleep, control breaths (C) were compared with the steady-state loaded breaths (SS) defined by breaths 41-50. Steady-state IRL was associated with augmentation of EMGdi (12%) and EMGab (50%). VT returned to control levels, expiratory time shortened, and breathing frequency increased. The net result was the increase in VE above control levels (+5%, P less than 0.01). No change was noted in end-tidal CO2 or O2. We concluded that 1) wakefulness is a prerequisite for immediate load compensation (in its absence, TI prolongation is the only compensatory response) and 2) during sustained IRL, the augmentation of EMGdi and EMGab can lead to complete ventilatory recovery without measurable changes in chemical stimuli.

Electromyogram power spectra frequencies associated with motor unit recruitment strategies

The isolated contributions of motor unit recruitment and firing rate variations to the median frequency of the electromyogram's power density spectrum were determined. Orderly stimulation of the cat gastrocnemius motor units via nerve electrodes gave rise to linearly increasing median frequency regardless of the action potential firing rate of the active motor units. Increase in the discharge rate of all the motor units resulted in nearly constant median frequency. It was concluded that the increasing average conduction velocity during motor unit recruitment is the major contributor to variations in the electromyogram median frequency. The possibility of using the median frequency as the index to identify the recruitment control strategies employed by various muscles during increasing force contraction is suggested.

Short latency vestibular responses to pulsed linear acceleration

Far-field vestibular responses to pulsed linear cranial acceleration have not been reported in detail for any species. In this study, precisely defined pulsed linear accelerations were used to elicit vestibular neural responses recorded from the surfaces of the skulls of 23 White Leghorn chicks. Traditional signal averaging techniques were used to resolve responses. At moderate intensities, responses consisted of a series of four to seven dominant peaks occurring within a period of 8 ms, having amplitudes between 0.3 and 20 microV peak-to-peak. The mean response threshold was 0.120 +/- 0.045 g. Latencies and amplitudes varied systematically as a function of stimulus intensity. Hypothermia prolonged response latencies. Response peaks did not invert on stimulus inversion, were present in response to cranial but not trunk acceleration, were not attenuated by broad-band auditory masking or by ambient light conditions, and disappeared with complete bilateral destruction of the labyrinth. The results rule out major contributions from auditory, somatosensory, and visual modalities and support the hypothesis that the responses reflect bilateral neural activity in the vestibular system. The findings suggest that direct noninvasive assessment of peripheral vestibular function can be achieved using pulsed linear acceleration stimuli.

Peripheral projections of nociceptive unmyelinated axons in the human peroneal nerve

1. Previous knowledge of the anatomical course of unmyelinated (C) axons along a peripheral nerve has been scarce and has led to the concept of the axons in a constantly interchanging position. 2. Results obtained by microneurography in the peroneal nerve at knee or ankle levels in awake humans demonstrated that the receptive fields of neighbouring C units in the nerve cluster in close vicinity on the skin of the foot or the ankle. These findings indicate that C afferents run closely together throughout large portions of the peripheral nerve. 3. Intraneural microstimulation performed at neural sites where nociceptive C units were recorded induced painful sensations projected to the skin. When the stimulus intensity was increased, there was typically a concentric increase in the area of projected pain, rather than recruitment of several scattered pain projections. This finding further supports the hypothesis of a neighbouring relation of nociceptive C axons within nerve fascicles, implying spatial recruitment of adjacent axons in the nerve with adjacent peripheral projections. 4. A pain locognosia test performed during ischaemic block of impulse conduction in myelinated fibres demonstrated a fairly precise cerebral localization of noxious events on the foot from the input of C afferent fibres alone.

The combination of motion signals over time

The improvement in performance with increasing number of frames in a random-dot kinematogram (temporal recruitment) was assessed by measuring threshold signal-to-noise ratios of direction discrimination. At fast frame presentation rates (50 Hz) thresholds fell sharply as the number of frames in the sequence increased, whereas at slow frame presentation rates (20 and 10 Hz) there was a less dramatic fall in thresholds. The similarity between the results at 20 and 10 Hz suggests that the mechanism of this less dramatic rise is relatively independent of temporal factors. The recruitment effect also does not appear to be limited by a maximum spatial range. We propose that temporal recruitment may occur via two mechanisms. One involves stimulating motion detectors with greater spans and delays, whilst the other involves the co-operative interaction of signals from units tuned to similar directions and have similar spans and delays. This distinction is supported by a further experiment which eliminates the first of these recruitment mechanisms by destroying possible correlations between non-adjacent frames.
