Abstract
Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a mesenchymal tumor involving blood and lymphatic vessels and induced by viral growth factors (HHV8-IL6). This article reviews the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical spectrum (classic KS, iatrogenic immunosuppressive KS, endemic African KS, and AIDS-KS), histological features, staging criteria and treatment of KS. Unlike industrialized countries that have benefited from widespread use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), developing countries continue to have a high incidence of AIDS-KS. Future therapeutic targets for KS are enhancement of immune function and treatment with angiogenesis inhibitors

Abstract
Patients admitted to hospitals in tropical Africa are at increased risk for nosocomial infection. However accurate description of this risk is difficult due to a lack of published data in the literature. The main promoting factors are poor health care facilities, high microbial levels in the hospital and community environment and generally uncertain health status. Most available information is about neonatal infection. The increasing number of reports involving multiresistant bacteria is evidence of poor hospital sanitation. Infections involving operative incision sites, tuberculosis and respiratory virus transmission are grossly underestimated. Infections transmitted by the parenteral route are probably decreasing due to more widespread use of disposal equipment and adequate transfusion safety measures. Epidemics involving viral hemorrhagic fever are rare but highly publicized events that attest to daily neglect of nosocomial risk factors in some health care facilities

Abstract
We present the scaling properties of Lambda, Xi, and Omega in midrapidity Au+Au collisions at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. The yield of multistrange baryons per participant nucleon increases from peripheral to central collisions more rapidly than that of Lambda, indicating an increase of the strange-quark density of the matter produced. The strange phase-space occupancy factor gamma_{s} approaches unity for the most central collisions. Moreover, the nuclear modification factors of p, Lambda, and Xi are consistent with each other for 2<p_{T}<5 GeV/c in agreement with a scenario of hadron formation from constituent quark degrees of freedom.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous epidemiological studies of rural human populations in Gabon reveal a high prevalence of human hepatitis A, B, C and D viruses. In order to investigate the prevalence of the blood-born hepatitis viruses in apes and monkeys living in the same area, we performed an epidemiological survey of HBV, HCV and HDV in wild-born non-human primates. METHODS We tested 441 wild-born non-human primates from Gabon and Congo and 132 imported monkeys for the presence of serological markers of HBV, HCV and HDV infections. RESULTS None of Cercopithecidae monkeys were reactive against HBV/HDV and HCV. In contrast, 29.2% of wild-born great apes (154 chimpanzees and 14 gorillas) were positive for HBV serological markers. Nine chimpanzees were in the replicative phase of HBV infection. None of these HBV infected chimpanzees exhibited symptoms or significant changes in serum clinical chemistry related to HBV infection. CONCLUSIONS The negativity to HCV-related viruses and the negativity of the Cercopithecidae species tested against HBV/HDV do not allow us to definitively rule out the presence of an animal counterpart of human hepatitis viruses in non-human primates.

Abstract
The risk of epidemics and emerging or re-emerging diseases such as avian flu, tuberculosis, malaria and other vector-borne diseases, is rising. These risks can be contained with prevention, early warning, and prompt management. Despite progress in information technology, communication is still a bottleneck for health early warning and response systems in post-disaster situations. This paper presents Satellites for Epidemiology (SAFE), a component-based interoperable architecture for health early warning that employs satellite, radio, and wireless networks, geographic information systems, integration technology, and data mining to promptly identify and respond to a disease outbreak. In a post-disaster situation, a mobile health emergency coordination center is established and integrated to public health services for health monitoring. The added-value of SAFE for post-disaster health management will be demonstrated as part of an earthquake readiness exercise regarding a typhoid fever epidemic, in the island of Crete. Advanced communication and data mining techniques in SAFE offer new tools to the "Epidemic Intelligence" and contribute to advanced preparedness and prompt response by lifting communication barriers, promoting collaboration, and reducing the isolation of affected areas.

Abstract
European or Persian Walnut (Juglans regia) is an important and healthy food as well as base material of timber industry. Several pests (pathogens and insect pests) may cause serious damages on walnut. These are less known on the crop land of the tree. Results of some years of our experiments including bacteriological and mycological studies, are presented in this paper. The optimum time of chemical protection against the walnut blight (Xanthomonas arboricola pv. juglandis) was determined. Occurrences of pathogenic fungi were surveyed in an orchard and on home garden trees in Hungary (18 fungus species were identified). The following experimental results are reported on the pathogenic fungi: cultivar resistance to walnut anthracnose (Gnomonia leptostyla), dying of wood parts in the cultivar collection, application of the spore trap, in vitro fungicide testing against Phomopsis juglandina.

Abstract
The surface properties of films made of p-methoxyphenacyl derivative terpolymers, associated with photocleavage by UV irradiation, and their optical patterning are investigated. The deprotection reaction has been monitored by UV and FTIR spectroscopy, contact angle measurements, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, revealing the photoremoval of the protecting p-methoxyphenacyl group in high yields under mild conditions. Parallel and serial patterning of the films has been performed by selective irradiation through optical masks and by laser irradiation via fiber tips of a scanning near-field optical microscope, respectively. By irradiation of photolabile protected functional groups, free carboxylic groups become exposed to the surface with which fluorescent dyes and proteins can be associated specifically.

Abstract
The STAR Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider reports measurements of azimuthal correlations of high transverse momentum (pT) charged hadrons in Au+Au collisions at higher pT than reported previously. As (pT) is increased, a narrow, back-to-back peak emerges above the decreasing background, providing a clear dijet signal for all collision centralities studied. Using these correlations, we perform a systematic study of dijet production and suppression in nuclear collisions, providing new constraints on the mechanisms underlying partonic energy loss in dense matter.

Abstract
Transverse momentum spectra of pi+/-, p, and p up to 12 GeV/c at midrapidity in centrality selected Au + Au collisions at square root sNN=200 GeV are presented. In central Au + Au collisions, both pi +/- and p(p) show significant suppression with respect to binary scaling at pT approximately >4 GeV/c. Protons and antiprotons are less suppressed than pi+/-, in the range 1.5 approximately < pT approximately < 6 GeV/c. The pi-/pi+ and p/p ratios show at most a weak pT dependence and no significant centrality dependence. The p/pi ratios in central Au + Au collisions approach the values in p + p and d + Au collisions at pT approximately >5 GeV/c. The results at high pT indicate that the partonic sources of pi+/-, p, and p have similar energy loss when traversing the nuclear medium.

Abstract
Measurements of the production of forward pi0 mesons from p + p and d + Au collisions at square root sNN=200 GeV are reported. The p + p yield generally agrees with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The d + Au yield per binary collision is suppressed as eta increases, decreasing to approximately 30% of the p + p yield at eta =4.00, well below shadowing expectations. Exploratory measurements of azimuthal correlations of the forward pi0 with charged hadrons at eta approximately 0 show a recoil peak in p + p that is suppressed in d + Au at low pion energy. These observations are qualitatively consistent with a saturation picture of the low-x gluon structure of heavy nuclei.

Abstract
We report the measurements of Sigma(1385) and Lambda(1520) production in p+p and Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s{NN}]=200 GeV from the STAR Collaboration. The yields and the p(T) spectra are presented and discussed in terms of chemical and thermal freeze-out conditions and compared to model predictions. Thermal and microscopic models do not adequately describe the yields of all the resonances produced in central Au+Au collisions. Our results indicate that there may be a time span between chemical and thermal freeze-out during which elastic hadronic interactions occur.

Abstract
C(59)N magnetic fullerenes were formed inside single-wall carbon nanotubes by vacuum annealing functionalized C(59)N molecules encapsulated inside the tubes. A hindered, anisotropic rotation of C(59)N was deduced from the temperature dependence of the electron spin resonance spectra near room temperature. Shortening of the spin-lattice relaxation time T(1) of C(59)N indicates a reversible charge transfer toward the host nanotubes above approximately 350 K. Bound C(59)N-C(60) heterodimers are formed at lower temperatures when C(60) is coencapsulated with the functionalized C(59)N. In the 10-300 K range, T(1) of the heterodimer shows a relaxation dominated by the conduction electrons on the nanotubes.

Abstract
Cutaneous tuberculosis is now uncommon in industrial countries despite the rising incidence of extrapulmonary tuberculosis in areas with high prevalence of HIV infection. Nevertheless it is still important to know the multiple clinical manifestations of cutaneous tuberculosis and to be aware of new laboratory diagnostic methods such as polymerization chain reaction gene amplification.

Abstract
Non-invasive faecal sampling in the equatorial forest in Gabon allowed the first identification of the hepatitis B virus (HBV-Ch(RC170)) genome in samples collected from wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes). The HBV-Ch(RCl70)sequence clustered with 100% bootstrap support with previous viral sequences obtained from Pan troglodytes subspecies. This is the first evidence of HBV infection in wild apes and confirms that the HBV-like strains thus far characterized in captive apes are directly related to those circulating in the wild.

The morphological diagnosis of small mesothelial lesions in pleural biopsies is gaining importance in view of more aggressive, multimodal therapeutic options and of medicolegal aspects if a malignant mesothelioma is diagnosed. We present a light microscopically and immunohistochemically based morphological classification for the planning of further clinical follow-up procedures. A reactive mesothelial hyperplasia heals without scars. Mesothelial inclusions in pleuritic scars are common in recurrent pleuritis and must not be confused with an epithelioid component of a desmoplastic mesothelioma. In case of atypical mesothelial proliferations, further diagnostic procedures have to be performed to obtain a clear diagnosis of malignancy. Mesothelioma in situ is the first morphological step in neoplastic mesothelial changes, also with regard to medicolegal aspects for the unambiguous diagnosis of a mesothelioma. Early infiltrative growth is characteristic of so called early mesothelioma. A useful immunohistochemical panel for the differential diagnosis consists of anti-cytokeratin, Ck 5/6, calretinin, EMA and MiB-1, whereas the immunohistochemical detection of telomerase is not helpful.
