Abstract
To evaluate the effect of PRL on the male pituitary-gonadal system, serum concentrations of PRL, testosterone, LH and FSH were determined in healthy young men daily before, during, and after 3-day oral administration of bromocriptine, metoclopramide or sulpiride. Bromocriptine (2.5 mg as a single dose) caused, concurrently with a marked suppression of serum PRL, a significant increase of serum testosterone and a transient decrease of serum LH. The changes of PRL and testosterone were negatively correlated. With metoclopramide (10 mg q.i.d.) serum PRL was increased and testosterone inversely decreased. There was no change in LH and FSH. Sulpiride (50 mg q.i.d.) evoked the elevation of serum PRL and LH, but no change in testosterone. A significant increase in serum concentration of testosterone was also observed in a patient with PRL-producing pituitary tumour and four out of seven patients with acromegaly during bromocriptine treatment. These results suggest an inhibitory effect of PRL on testosterone secretion at the gonadal level, or direct dopaminergic stimulatory control of testosterone secretion.

Abstract
Mouse interferon or the induction of mouse interferon with polyriboinosinic acid-polyribocytidylic acid significantly protected mice against herpes simplex and ectromelia viral infections. When polyriboinosinic acid-polyribocytidylic acid was administered 24 h before herpes simplex or ectromelia viral infection and mouse interferon was administered shortly before and 24 h after infection, a combined protective effect against either herpes simplex or ectromelia viral infection in mice was evident. There was a significant decrease in the mortality rate with the combined treatment as compared either with the rate in group treated with interferon or polyriboinosinic acid-polyribocytidylic acid.

Abstract
The sensitivities to human leukocyte interferon of 10 strains of Herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 and 3 strains of type 2 were compared. All the strains were sensitive to interferon, although their sensitivities were less than that of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV). There was no significant difference in the sensitivities to interferon of HSV type 1 and type-2 or among different strains of a given type of HSV. Nor was there any difference between the sensitivities of 5-iodo-2'-deoxyuridine (IDU)-sensitive and resistant strains isolated from the same patients. These results suggest that interferon should be useful in therapy of HSV infection.

Abstract
Mice that were fed a diet containing 400, 200 or 100 microgram of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) per g were significantly more susceptible to Herpes simplex virus than mice that were fed a PCB-free diet. The mortality of mice that were fed a diet containing 400 or 200 microgram of PCB per g and infected with ectromelia virus was higher than that of normal control mice infected with virus. There was no significant difference in inducibility of interferon by polyinosinic acid-polycytoidylic acid between PCB-fed mice and control mice.

Abstract
Intraperitoneal injection of mouse brain interferon into mice 24 hr before inoculation of ectromelia virus, significantly reduced the mortality rate and prolonged the mean day of death (MDD). Intravenous injection of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) 24 hr before virus inoculation, also had significant beneficial effects. Furthermore, combined treatment with interferon and NDV had more protective effect against virus infection than either interferon or NDV treatment alone.

Abstract
An enzyme-linked immunoassay for somatostatin using somatostatin-alkaline phosphatase conjugate as "labeled" antigen was developed. Minimal detectable dose at present was 40 pg per tube. Serial dilutions of rat hypothalamic extract gave a gradual change of antibody-bound alkaline phosphatase activity which was parallel to that with standard somatostatin. Precision and accuracy of the method were comparable to those in radioimmunoassay reported by others. This method will be a useful tool for the determination of somatostatin, especially in tissues.
