Abstract
Background Rising HIV infection rates have been observed among elderly people in Guangxi, China. Inexpensive aphrodisiacs are available for purchase in suburban and rural areas. This study aims to investigate the association between aphrodisiac use and increased HIV risk for middle-aged and elderly men in Guangxi. Methods A matched case-control study of aphrodisiac use-associated HIV infection was performed among male subjects over 50 years old who were clients of low-cost commercial sex venues in Guangxi. The cases were defined as clients who were HIV-positive and two controls were selected for each case. The cases and the controls were matched on the visited sex venue, age (±3 years), number of years of purchasing sex (±3 years), and educational attainment. Subjects were interviewed and tested for HIV. Paired t-test or McNemar Chi-squared test were used to compare the characteristics between the cases and controls. A stepwise conditional logistic regression was used to identify risk factors associated with HIV infection. Findings This study enrolled 103 cases and 206 controls. Aphrodisiac use (P = 0.02, odds ratio (OR) = 1.81, 95% CI = 1.08–3.04), never using condom during commercial sex encounter (P = 0.03, odds ratio (OR) = 1.82, 95% CI = 1.08–3.07), and lacking a stable partner (P = 0.03, odds ratio (OR) = 1.76, 95% CI = 1.05–2.98) were found to be risk factors for HIV infection among the study groups. For subjects reporting aphrodisiac use, the frequency of purchasing sex was positively correlated with the frequency of aphrodisiac use (r = 0.3; p = 0.02). Conclusions Aphrodisiac use was significantly associated with increased HIV infection risk in men over 50 years old who purchased commercial sex in the suburban and rural areas of Guangxi. Further research and interventions should address the links between aphrodisiac use, commercial sex work, condom use, and increased HIV transmission.

Abstract
AIM The study assessed whether the addition of monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) to first-line chemotherapy for advanced colorectal cancer (CRC) increases the complete response (CR) compared with controls. METHOD PubMed was reviewed for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) with approved MoAbs (bevacizumab, cetuximab and panitumumab) vs non-MoAbs as first-line therapy for patients with advanced CRC. The incidence and ratio of CR events were calculated in patients assigned to MoAbs compared with controls. RESULTS A total of 3790 patients from nine RCTs were included for analysis. The overall incidence of CR in patients treated with MoAbs was 2.4% (95% CI: 1.7-3.3%) compared with 1.3% (95% CI: 0.8-2.2%) in controls. Comparison of the different types of MoAbs showed that the incidence of CR was higher for bevacizumab (3.1%, 95% CI: 2.1-4.3%) than for cetuximab (0.8%, 95% CI: 0.4-1.8%). The addition of MoAbs to chemotherapy significantly increased the OR of obtaining a CR compared with controls (OR = 1.96; 95% CI: 1.12-3.46; P = 0.02). No significant differences in the OR were observed in any of the subgroups. CONCLUSION The CR is a rare event in advanced CRC; however, the addition of MoAbs to first-line chemotherapy significantly increases the curative rate of metastatic disease compared with controls.

Abstract
Background Men who have sex with men (MSM) represent the fastest growing key population for incident HIV cases in China. We examined five consecutive years of HIV and syphilis prevalence and risk factors data among MSM in Guangxi Province with the second highest estimated number of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs) in China in 2011. Methods We collected demographic and behavioral data from national sentinel surveillance and HIV/syphilis blood samples in five annual cross-sectional surveys from 2008 to 2012. We analyzed HIV and syphilis prevalence trends stratified by social/behavioral characteristics. Results HIV prevalence climbed steadily from 1.7% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.0 to 3.0) in 2008 to 3.7% (95% CI: 3.0 to 5.0) in 2012. Syphilis prevalence increased steadily from 5.1% (95% CI: 4.0 to 6.0) in 2008 to 8.4% (95% CI: 7.0 to 10.0) in 2012. HIV prevalence rose notably among MSM who were ≤25 years of age, never married, did not engage in sexual intercourse with women in the past six months, and had not been tested for HIV in the past year. Syphilis prevalence rose notably among MSM who were >25 years of age, ever married or living with a partner, and engaged in sexual intercourse with women in the past six months. HIV prevalence was much higher in MSM with current syphilis than without. Finally, current syphilis was the most significant predictor of HIV infection, and age was the most significant predictor of syphilis infection. Conclusions HIV and the syphilis prevalence expansion among MSM suggest an urgent public health prevention challenge for Guangxi provincial health officials. Risk factors for each infection differed such that all MSM, each of whom might be at risk of HIV, syphilis or both, should be targets for heavy intervention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Highly-active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) was scaled up in Guangxi, China in 2005. The number of individuals receiving free HAART increased dramatically from June 2010 under the Guangxi Government's anti-HIV programme. We aimed to determine the prevalence of HIV-transmitted drug resistance (TDR) of Guangxi. METHODS HIV-positive, antiretroviral-naive individuals were recruited from the east (Hezhou), south (Qinzhou), west (Baise), north (Guilin) and centre (Laibin) of Guangxi. The pol gene of the virus from the individuals was analysed. RESULTS The overall prevalence of HIV TDR was 3.2% (7/216, 95% CI 0.9-5.5). The prevalence rates in Baise, Guilin, Hezhou, Qinzhou and Laibin are 4.9% (2/41, 95% CI -1.7 to 11.5), 2.3% (1/44, 95% CI -2.1 to 5.7), 4.7% (2/43, 95% CI -1.6 to 11.0), 2.6% (1/38, 95% CI -2.5 to 7.7) and 2.0% (1/50, 95% CI -1.9 to 5.9), respectively. No significant difference in the prevalence was found among them. No factors were found to be associated with TDR, including CD4 cell counts, viral loads and genotypes. The subtypes CRF01_AE, CRF07_BC, CRF08_BC and B were found. Subtype CRF08_BC is the predominant subtype in Baise while CRF01_AE is the predominant subtype elsewhere in Guangxi. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of TDR in antiretroviral-naive patients in Guangxi remains low 8 years after scale-up of HAART.

Abstract
Limited data are available regarding risk factors that are related to intimate partner violence (IPV) against female sex workers (FSWs) in the context of stable partnerships. Out of the 1,022 FSWs, 743 reported ever having a stable partnership and 430 (more than half) of those reported experiencing IPV. Hierarchical multivariate regression revealed that some characteristics of stable partners (e.g., low education, alcohol use) and relationship stressors (e.g., frequent friction, concurrent partnerships) were independently predictive of IPV against FSWs. Public health professionals who design future violence prevention interventions targeting FSWs need to consider the influence of their stable partners.

Abstract
Gastric cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Oridonin, a diterpenoid isolated from Rabdosia rubescens, has attracted considerable attention as a potential treatment for gastric cancer based on its anti-tumor effects in many tumor cell lines. However, detailed anti-tumor mechanisms of oridonin remain a matter of speculation. In the present study, a gastric carcinoma cell line harboring c-Met gene amplification SNU-5 was used to investigate the underlying mechanisms. The results showed that in vitro, oridonin potently inhibited c-Met phosphorylation and c-Met-dependent cell proliferation (IC50 value, 36.8 μM), meanwhile down-regulated the expression of the downstream signaling molecules including phospho-c-Raf, phospho-Erk, and phospho-Akt. In vivo, oridonin showed efficacy at well-tolerated doses, including marked cytoreductive anti-tumor activity in SNU-5 subcutaneous xenograft model. The anti-tumor efficacy of oridonin was dose-dependent and showed strong inhibition of c-Met phosphorylation. Additional mechanism of action studies showed dose-dependent inhibition of c-Met-dependent signal transduction, tumor cell proliferation (Ki67), and reduction of microvessel density (CD31). These results suggested that the anti-tumor activity of oridonin may be mediated by direct effects on tumor cell growth or survival as well as anti-angiogenic mechanisms. In summary, the results indicated that oridonin exerted anti-tumor growth on human gastric cancer SNU-5 in vitro and in vivo by direct regulation of c-Met signaling pathway and the anti-tumor effects was mainly based on its anti-proliferation and anti-angiogenesis.

Abstract
Background Guangxi has become one of the provinces with the most severe HIV-1 epidemic in China, where heterosexual contact is the dominant transmission route. However, data of acute HIV infections and HIV incidence among female sex workers (FSWs) from low-grade venues are scant. Methods A cross-sectional survey was performed among FSWs from low-grade venues in Guangxi. HIV antibody screening was performed by rapid testing (RT). HIV antibody–negative specimens were screened by pooled nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) for acute HIV infections. HIV antibody-positive specimens were further analyzed by Western blot (WB), followed by an HIV-1 BED capture enzyme immunoassay (BED-CEIA) to identify the recent infections. HIV-1 incidence was estimated by the data of pooled NAAT and BED-CEIA, respectively. Results A total of 7936 FSWs were recruited and answered the questionnaires. We successfully collected the blood samples from 6469 (81.5%) participants, of which 139 (2.1%) were HIV antibody–positive and 6330 (97.9%) were HIV antibody-negative by RT. With pooled NAAT, 7 cases were found to be HIV RNA positive, representing an additional 5.0% of HIV-infected persons and an estimated HIV incidence of 1.45 (95% CI: 1.17–1.76) per 100 person years. There were 137 positive and 2 indeterminate by WB, of which 124 (90.5%) positive specimens were subjected to BED-CEIA testing identifying 28 recent infections. The HIV incidence determined by BED-CEIA testing was 1.04 (95% CI: 0.65–1.43) per 100 person years. The overall prevalence of HIV among FSWs from low-grade venues in Guangxi was 2.2% (95% CI: 1.9–2.6). Conclusions We found that the addition of HIV RNA screening to routine HIV antibody testing significantly improved the detection of HIV infection among FSWs from low-grade venues in Guangxi. Our findings also provided the useful baseline data of HIV incidence among this population for targeting local HIV prevention, intervention, monitoring and treatment.

Abstract
Aim: This study aimed to determine whether nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 antagonized the oxidative stress induced by di- N-butylphthalate (DBP) in testicular Leydig cells. Methods: Mouse TM3 testicular Leydig cells were treated with Nrf2 knockdown (KD) or overexpression in the presence and absence of DBP. Oxidative profiles were examined. Nrf2 target antioxidant genes were studied, and the effects of Nrf2 inducer sulphoraphane (SFN) were tested. Results: DBP induced intracellular oxidative stress to a similar extent with Nrf2 KD. Expression and protein levels of Nrf2 were increased together with its target genes, namely heme oxygenase 1, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate quinone oxidoreductase 1 and peroxiredoxin 6, following DBP stimulation. Use of SFN not only restored the intracellular oxidative toxicity but also cell proliferation and testosterone secretion in response to DBP. Conclusion: Increased Nrf2 activity, for example, by SFN can effectively antagonize the oxidative stress in testicular Leydig cells caused by DBP.

Abstract
Representing a basal branch of arachnids, scorpions are known as ‘living
fossils’ that maintain an ancient anatomy and are adapted to have survived
extreme climate changes. Here we report the genome sequence of Mesobuthus
martensii, containing 32,016 protein-coding genes, the most among sequenced
arthropods. Although M. martensii appears to evolve conservatively, it has a
greater gene family turnover than the insects that have undergone diverse morphological
and physiological changes, suggesting the decoupling of the molecular and morphological
evolution in scorpions. Underlying the long-term adaptation of scorpions is the
expansion of the gene families enriched in basic metabolic pathways, signalling
pathways, neurotoxins and cytochrome P450, and the different dynamics of expansion
between the shared and the scorpion lineage-specific gene families. Genomic and
transcriptomic analyses further illustrate the important genetic features associated
with prey, nocturnal behaviour, feeding and detoxification. The M. martensii
genome reveals a unique adaptation model of arthropods, offering new insights into the
genetic bases of the living fossils. Scorpions have maintained the primary anatomical features of their
Paleozoic arthropod ancestors. Here, the authors report the genome sequence of
Mesobuthus martensii and highlight evidence of genetic and morphological
evolution that represents a unique adaptation model of arthropods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The symptoms of major depression (MD) are clinically diverse. Do they form coherent factors that might clarify the underlying nature of this important psychiatric syndrome? METHOD Symptoms at lifetime worst depressive episode were assessed at structured psychiatric interview in 6008 women of Han Chinese descent, age ⩾30 years with recurrent DSM-IV MD. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatoryfactor analysis (CFA) were performed in Mplus in random split-half samples. RESULTS The preliminary EFA results were consistently supported by the findings from CFA. Analyses of the nine DSM-IV MD symptomatic A criteria revealed two factors loading on: (i) general depressive symptoms; and (ii) guilt/suicidal ideation. Examining 14 disaggregated DSM-IV criteria revealed three factors reflecting: (i) weight/appetite disturbance; (ii) general depressive symptoms; and (iii) sleep disturbance. Using all symptoms (n = 27), we identified five factors that reflected: (i) weight/appetite symptoms; (ii) general retarded depressive symptoms; (iii) atypical vegetative symptoms; (iv) suicidality/hopelessness; and (v) symptoms of agitation and anxiety. CONCLUSIONS MD is a clinically complex syndrome with several underlying correlated symptom dimensions. In addition to a general depressive symptom factor, a complete picture must include factors reflecting typical/atypical vegetative symptoms, cognitive symptoms (hopelessness/suicidal ideation), and an agitated symptom factor characterized by anxiety, guilt, helplessness and irritability. Prior cross-cultural studies, factor analyses of MD in Western populations and empirical findings in this sample showing risk factor profiles similar to those seen in Western populations suggest that our results are likely to be broadly representative of the human depressive syndrome.

Abstract
Previous literature suggests a high rate of HIV infections among older female sex workers (FSWs) in China. However, limited data are available regarding HIV- related behavioral risk factors among this population. In the current study, we aim to examine the demographic and behavioral factors that place older FSWs at a high risk of HIV infection. We conducted secondary analysis of the 2010 National Sentinel Surveillance (NSS) data from Guangxi, China. A self-administered, standard behavioral surveillance survey was completed by a total of 12,622 FSWs in Guangxi, China. The Guangxi 2010 NSS sample included 19.4% FSWs aged 35 years or older ("older FSWs"). The overall HIV prevalence was 1.0% for the entire sample with 2.0% among older FSWs and 0.8% among younger ones. Older age was an independent predictor of unprotected sex, injection drug use, and a self-reported history of syphilis infection. Future HIV prevention interventions targeting FSWs should consider older FSWs' vulnerable status. Efforts are needed to address their financial needs and invest in skills for socio-economic empowerment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The family of polypeptide N-acetylgalactosaminyl transferases is responsible for the altered O-linked glycosylation occurring during the development of various cancers and their progression via altering O-glycan biosynthesis. Our studies were designed to investigate the expression and prognostic values of GalNAc-T5 and improve the risk stratification in patients with gastric cancer. METHODS Tissue samples from a training set and a validation set of patients with gastric adenocarcinoma from China were used for analyses. GalNAc-T5 expression was retrospectively analysed by immunohistochemistry. Results were assessed for association with clinicopathological parameters and overall survival by using Kaplan-Meier analysis. Prognostic values of GalNAc-T5 expression and clinical outcomes were evaluated by Cox regression analysis. A molecular prognostic stratification scheme incorporating GalNAc-T5 expression was determined by using receiver operating characteristic analysis. RESULTS GalNAc-T5 expression was markedly reduced in gastric cancer tissues compared with non-malignant gastric mucosa. Low intratumoral GalNAc-T5 density, which was associated with tumour cell differentiation, T classification, N classification, and TNM stage in the two independent sets, was an independent prognosticator for poor prognosis of gastric cancer patients. Applying the prognostic value of intratumoral GalNAc-T5 density to the conventional clinicopathologic TNM stage system showed a better prognostic value in patients with gastric cancer. CONCLUSIONS Intratumoral GalNAc-T5 expression was recognised as an independent prognostic marker for the overall survival of gastric cancer patients. Detection of GalNAc-T5 expression in gastric cancer tissues might add some prognostic information for patients with this disease and lead to a more accurate classification under the TNM stage system.

Abstract
The toxicity of metal oxide nanomaterials and their antimicrobial activity is attracting increasing attention. Among these materials, MgO is particularly interesting as a low cost, environmentally-friendly material. The toxicity of MgO, similar to other metal oxide nanomaterials, is commonly attributed to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). We investigated the toxicity of three different MgO nanoparticle samples, and clearly demonstrated robust toxicity towards Escherichia coli bacterial cells in the absence of ROS production for two MgO nanoparticle samples. Proteomics data also clearly demonstrate the absence of oxidative stress and indicate that the primary mechanism of cell death is related to the cell membrane damage, which does not appear to be due to lipid peroxidation.

Abstract
Routine necropsies of 27 asymptomatic juvenile chinchillas revealed a high prevalence of gastric ulcers with microscopic lymphoplasmacytic gastroenteritis and typhlocolitis. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis using Campylobacter genus-specific partial 16S rRNA primers revealed the presence of Campylobacter spp. DNA in the faeces of 12 of 27 animals (44.4%). Species-specific partial 16S rRNA PCR and sequencing confirmed that these animals were colonized with Campylobacter lanienae, a gram-negative, microaerophilic bacterium that was first identified on routine faecal screening of slaughterhouse employees and subsequently isolated from faeces of livestock. Campylobacter lanienae was isolated from the faeces of six PCR-positive animals and identified with species-specific PCR and full 16S rRNA sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis showed that these isolates clustered with C. lanienae strain NCTC 13004. PCR analysis of DNA extracted from gastrointestinal tissues revealed the presence of C. lanienae DNA in the caecum and colon of these chinchillas. Gastrointestinal lesions were scored and compared between C. lanienae-positive and C. lanienae-negative animals. There was no correlation between colonization status and lesion severity in the stomach, liver, duodenum, or colon. Possible routes of C. lanienae infection in chinchillas could include waterborne transmission and faecal-oral transmission from wild mice and rats or livestock. Based on these findings, the authors conclude that C. lanienae colonizes the lower bowel of chinchillas in the absence of clinical disease. This is the first report of C. lanienae in any rodent species. Campylobacter lanienae isolates from different mammalian species demonstrate heterogeneity by 16S rRNA sequence comparison. Analysis using rpoB suggests that isolates and clones currently identified as C. lanienae may represent multiple species or subspecies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the feasibility of RNA pooling technique in the diagnosis on acute HIV infection among female sex workers (FSWs) working at the low-grade venues. METHODS Plasma samples from the low-grade-venue FSWs in Guangxi, in 2011 were tested for HIV antibody using the rapid testing method. All samples which were HIV antibody negative in the rapid testing were tested for HIV RNA with RNA pooling technique. FSWs who showed HIV RNA positive were tested for HIV antibody by Western blot method in 3 months. The HIV incidence in the low-grade venue FSWs was counted under the estimation formula. RESULTS There were 6 469 cases of FSWs who were recruited in this study. Through rapid testing, results showed that HIV antibody was positive in 139 cases, with the positive rate as 2.15%. 6 330 FSWs with HIV antibody negative were tested by HIV RNA pooling method, with 7 of them showing HIV RNA positive, in which 6 cases showed HIV-1 antibody seroconversion, thus were diagnosed as acute HIV infection. HIV incidence in low-grade FSWs appeared to be 1.45 per 100 person years (95%CI:1.17-1.76 per 100 person years) in Guangxi. CONCLUSION Other than regular routine HIV antibody testing, it seemed necessary to adopt the HIV RNA pooling strategy in high-risk groups such as FSWs, so as to early detect the HIV infection and to timely perform the intervention or treatment programs to prevent sexual transmission of HIV.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to examine prevalence of HIV, syphilis and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection as well as related risk factors among a group of male clients of low-paying female sex workers (FSW) (eg, women who usually encounter their clients on the street or small establishments in rural or less developed areas, or who charge low fees for each sexual service) in a rural county of China. METHOD Cross-sectional study conducted in 2011 in a rural county of Guangxi in China. A total of 102 clients who reported information on demographics and HIV risks (eg, inconsistent condom use) and provided blood sample to test for HIV, HCV and syphilis were included in the data analysis. Both bivariate and multivariate analyses were employed to explore risk factors of HIV, HCV and syphilis infection. RESULTS Most of participants were of Han ethnicity with a mean age of 61.8 years. The majority of them lived in rural areas and worked as farmers with limited disposable cash incomes. The sample reported a high rate of unprotected sex with FSW in the last sex episode (83.7%) and inconsistent condom use in the last 6 months (95.9%). The overall prevalence of HIV, HCV and syphilis was 1.9%, 1.0% and 18.4%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest that male clients, especially the elderly ones, are at a high risk of HIV infection given prevalent unprotected sex and high prevalence of syphilis. Culturally-appropriate, age-specific interventions are urgently needed to curb the HIV/sexually transmitted infection epidemic among this at-risk population in China.

Abstract
In March 2013, an influenza outbreak caused by the novel avian-origin H7N9 influenza A virus emerged in eastern China and had caused 43 fatalities by 31 July 2013, although the basis for disease pathogenesis still remains unclear. To assess the immunological and viral factors associated with disease severity, viral RNA and inflammatory cytokines were quantified for 18 H7N9 patients in Shanghai, China. Detailed clinical information was collected and clinical laboratory investigations were performed for all patients. H7N9 infection is characterized by high pharyngeal virus load and frequent detection of viral RNA in blood. High pharyngeal virus load persisted through the first 10 days of antiviral therapy in fatal cases. Genetic characterization of the H7N9 virus revealed an Arg292Lys mutation in the neuraminidase gene associated with oseltamivir-resistance. Pronounced lymphopenia and high chemokine and cytokine levels were observed in H7N9-infected patients, particularly in those where disease was fatal. Serum levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8 and macrophage inflammatory protein-1β in our subjects also correlated positively with pharyngeal virus load. Lymphocyte counts <0.5 × 10(9) cells/L, and serum IL-6 >97 pg/mL, IL-8 >40 pg/mL and C-reactive protein >90 mg/L were identified as being connected with adverse clinical outcome through univariate logistic analysis. Significant survival differences were also observed between patients with serum C-reactive protein <90 mg/L or creatinine <90 μmol/L and those with higher levels. Our data demonstrated that high viral load, and the resulting intense inflammatory responses, played an important role in H7N9 pathogenesis. Though immunomodulatory treatment has potential benefits, the focus of clinical management should be on preventing the intense cytokine response by early diagnosis and effective antiviral treatment.

Abstract P1-01-13: Intraoperative evaluation of sentinel lymph nodes using touch imprint cytology in patients with early-stage breast cancer: A series of 4367 procedures. Cancer Res 2013. Abstract
Abstract
Background: As the screening for breast cancer becomes common in China, an increasing number of early-stage breast cancer has been detected. For those patients, especially the ones with cliniaclly negetive lymph nodes, sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) plays an important role in the assessment of the axillary status, while minimizing the mobidity of axillary lymph node dissection(ALND). Accurate intraoperative assessment of SLN metastases enables the selection of patients for ALND during the same operation. Touch imprint cytology (TIC) serves as a main intraoperative evaluation of SLNs in our institute since Feb-2005. The purpose of this study is to evaluate its clinical value.
Methods: Early-stage breast cancer patients treated in our institute between Feb-2005 and Apr-2013 enrolled in this study. To avoid breast tissue contamination, all patients had an intraoperative SLNB performed before undergoing lumpectomy or mastectomy. The fresh SLNs were sectioned into 1.5-3.0mm pieces along the short axis, TIC was performed on both surfaces of each piece, its result was correlated with the histological assessments with Hematoxylin-Eosin (H&E) staining, which considered as the gold standard.
Results: A total of 4,367 early-stage breast cancer patients enrolled in the study, and 14,112 SLNs were successfully harvested. Among those, 917 (21.0%) patients were confirmed to have at least one SLN positive for metastases, and 1343 (9.5%) positive SLNs were removed. Based on the final H&E report, the sensitivity, specificity and overall accuracy of TIC was 71.4%, 99.2% and 93.6%, respectively on a per patient basis, and 69.6%, 99.5% and 96.6%, respectively on a per node basis. The sensitivity for macrometastasis and micrometastasis was 74.8% and 26.5%, respectively on a per patient basis, and 78.9% and 25.2%, respectively on a per node basis. To discuss the influence of error results on the surgery procedure, we further reviewed the detail medical records of the patients enrolled in the recent 3 years. Of all the 3290 patiens treated between Jun-2010 and Apr-2013, 207(6.5%) patients needed a second opereation to have the ALN dissected. Meanwhile, 20(0.6%) patients had undergone extra ALND because of the false positive results of TIC.
Conclusion: The sensitivity of TIC seems a little lower then the ones reported previously, but the overall accuracy still remains acceptable. In addition, only 7.1% patients were influenced by the error results of TIC, along with the advantages, such as the shorter preparation time and the less cost of cytological specimens, we consider TIC a feasible method, and believe it can serve well in the intraoperative evaluation of SLNs for early-stage breast cancer patients.
