Abstract
Clinical experience with inflammatory cholecystopathy recognized in 137 patients studied by infusion tomography of the gallbladder is presented. Diagnostic accuracy was 96% in positive and 94% in negative histologically proven cases. Our results show that infusion tomography of the gallbladder is an accurate, rapid, and safe diagnostic aid in the evaluation of acute cholecystitis. In cases of chronic cholecystitis, infusion tomography may be confirmatory but should not be relied on as a final diagnostic test due to a high percentage of false negative cases.

Abstract
The composition of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL: d less than 1.019) of New Zealand male rabbits reciving cholesterol (2 g/day) and metformin (135 mg/kg/day) is investigated. These rabbits, while showing only a slight reduction of plasma cholesterol levels, as compared to cholesterol-fed (h.c.) animals, show a marked decrease of the aortic cholesterol esters and atheromatous process. VLDL from the cholesterol + metformin group (h.c. + met), as compared to the h.c. animals, are homogenous in size and not separable into VLDL-1 and VLDL-2 subfractions by Sepharose 4B chromatography. These findings are confirmed by electron microscopy, which shows homogeneity of particle size, as well a decreased tendency of h.c. + met VLDL to aggregate. Chemical composition of h.c. + met VLDL is characterized by increased triglycerides and phospholipids, while the percentage of cholesterol esters is not significantly decreased. Phospholipid distribution of h.c. + met VLDL shows a significant decrease of sphingomyelin and increased phosphatidylinositol, the latter both as compared to h.c. and control VLDL. Apoprotein pattern of h.c. + met VLDL in polyacrylamide gels shows a relative increase of peptides with C mobility and a decrease of proteins corresponding to the arg-rich peptides. These findings exemplify a case of altered lipoprotein composition and decreased atheromatosis, in the presence of marked hypercholesteremia.

Abstract
The dietary and hormonal regulation of the level of glutathione-insulin tranhydrogenase in rat liver was investigated in these studies. In order to make valid comparisons, the assay of glutathione-insulin transhydrogenase was performed at near zero-order kinetics wherein enzyme rate was proportional to enzyme amount. Changing the protein content of the diet or administration of glucagon or cortisone did not significantly affect the specific activity of glutathione-insulin transhydrogenase in microsomes from rat liver. However, the Vmax and Km of this enzyme in the livers of adrenalectomized rats were increased three-and fourfold over these values in microsomes from normal liver. Administration of cortisone resulted in a return to the normal kinetic constants of microsomal GIT within 4 hr.

Abstract
Tomography was useful in the preoperative assessment of twenty-one tibial-plateau fractures. It helped in classifying these fractures more precisely, information which is very important if the results of different methods of treatment are to be compared. It demonstrated clearly the extent of fracture depression or displacement, or both, as well as the site of the fracture and the extent of fracture comminution. The findings were confirmed at operation in the thirteen patients who had surgery.

Abstract
We observed a patient who developed diffuse bronchiectasis subsequent to heroin-induced pulmonary edema. Unlike the previously reported cases, there was rapid clearing of pulmonary infiltrates and little evidence of severe aspiration. The development of bronchiectasis was attributed to a bronchial infection subsequent to clearing of the pulmonary edema. Physiologic dysfunction was characterized by marked obstruction, pulmonary hypertension, and mild hypoxemia.

Abstract
VLDL from hypercholesteremic (HC) rabbits display features which are suggestive of inherent atherogenicity. The lipid composition, compared to that of control VLDL, shows an enrichment of cholesterol esters, which have a very high 18:1/18:2 ratio in their fatty acids, and an increased sphingomyelin content, with decreased PC/Sph ratio. This lipid composition is very similar to that of the atherosclerotic plaqua. Apoprotein peptides of HC VLDL show a predominance of arg-rich proteins, similar to human conditions (Type III hyperlipoproteinemia and hypothyroidism) characterized by early and severe atherosclerosis. Turnover of 125I-labelled HC VLDL is significantly slower than that of control VLDL, both when the lipoprotein is injected into the donor animals and into controls. Conversion of HC VLDL into lipoproteins of higher density is also very small, as compared to control VLDL. Uptake of radioactivity into the aortic wall after injection is about doubled, as compared to control VLDL, when HC rabbits receive HC VLDL. This experimental model suggests that structural modifications of the HC VLDL make them poorly metabolizable, and possible more akin to the recently described arterial lipoprotein complexing factor (ALCF). Metformin was selected as the test compound, because it has been shown to decrease aortic and liver lipid accumulation in cholesterol fed rabbits, while only slightly affecting plasma cholesterol levels. VLDL from rabbits fed cholesterol and metformin (HC+Met), while still enriched in cholesterol esters, have a higher protein content, less sphingomyelin and more phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylinositol than HC VLDL, while fatty acid composition of cholesterol esters does not differ. Turnover of HC+Met VLDL is extremely rapid, with a t1/2 even shorter than that of control VLDL.

Abstract
Isolation and chemical analyses of the cell walls of the yeast (Y form) and mycelial forms (M form) of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis and Blastomyces dermatitidis revealed that their chemical composition is similar and depends on the form. Lipids, chitin, glucans, and proteins are the main constituents of the cell walls of both forms of these fungi. There is no significant difference in the amount of lipids (5 to 10%) and glucans (36 to 47%) contained by the two forms. In both fungi, the Y form has a larger amount of chitin (37 to 48%) than the M form (7 to 18%), whereas the M form has a larger amount of proteins (24 to 41%) than the Y form (7 to 14%). Several properties of the glucan of P. brasiliensis were studied. Almost all of the glucan in the Y form was soluble in 1 n NaOH, was weakly positive in the periodic acid-Schiff reaction, was not hydrolyzed by snail digestive juice, and had alpha-glycosidic linkage. Glucans of the M form were divided into alkali-soluble (60 to 65%) and alkali-insoluble (35 to 40%) types. The alkali-soluble glucan was similar to that of the Y form; the alkali-insoluble glucan was positive in the periodic acid-Schiff reaction and was hydrolyzed by snail digestive juice.

Abstract
Desquamative interstitial pneumonia is a disease characterized by massive alveolar cell proliferation and desquamation with sparse interstitial involvement. The reported case shows an unusually widespread radiographic reticulo-nodular image and abundant alveolar cells in the sputum. Functional studies reveal the expected diffusion defect with practically normal mechanical properties of the lung, in contrast with interstitial fibrosing lung diseases. On the basis of the pathological findings, especially the behaviour of alveolar cells, the individuality of this disease is discussed. We think that it is different from other diseases classed as varieties of a single disease or as different entities under the names of primary interstitial fibrosis or chronic fibrosing alveolitis.

Abstract
A comparative study of the mycelial phase of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis and Blastomyces dermatitidis reveals that both fungi are very much alike, containing multiple nuclei and nuclear pores, mitochondria, ribosomes, scarce endoplasmic reticulum, intracytoplasmic membrane systems, glycogen, and vacuoles. Shadowed cell walls show fine fibrillar surfaces that contrast with those in the yeast phase. The intracytoplasmic membrane system is continuous with the plasma membrane and is similar to bacterial mesosomes. Granules with light cores and dark rims are observed in the plasma membrane. Live hyphae growing inside a dead hypha are found much more frequently in immersed cultures than in solid-medium cultures, suggesting that breakage of the hypha could elicit this phenomenon.
