Abstract
The authors' experience with right-sided diverticulitis is reviewed. The symptoms among 18 patients were continuous right lower quadrant abdominal pain and periumbilical pain radiating to the right lower quadrant. Only three patients had nausea and vomiting. Twelve patients (67 per cent) had an abnormally high white blood cell count; three had granulocytosis. Barium enema examination was not a helpful diagnostic aid; and in only two patients was the preoperative diagnosis correct. The operative procedures undertaken were right colectomy with ileotransverse colostomy (15 patients), partial right colectomy with ileoascending colostomy (two patients), and diverticulectomy and appendectomy (one patient). There were no deaths; the average hospital stay was 14.2 days (range 5 to 30 days). The authors conclude that there is no characteristic clinical pattern pointing to this diagnosis; diagnostic maneuvers are usually unrewarding; right hemicolectomy is a safe and expeditious procedure; and open cecotomy is not favored, as recommended in the medical literature, to establish the diagnosis.

Abstract
A program for training health personnel for the provision of IUD services has been implemented and evaluated with 14 auxiliary nurse-midwives (ANMs) in Turkey and 13 ANMs in the Philippines. Standardized training materials, including a training manual, checklists for contraindications or complications of IUD use, and patient-management instructions, have been developed. The study suggests that similar training programs should use a reference manual as a focus for didactic training and that the acquisition of skills is best accomplished in small groups of two to three trainees per instructor. Trainees should ideally perform a minimum of 50-60 supervised pelvic examinations and 10-15 supervised IUD insertions.

Abstract
A program of IUD insertions by paramedics and physicians was undertaken at the José Fabella Memorial Hospital. Both Lippes C and D were inserted in the postpartum and interval periods. Results show that paramedics can safely and effectively perform IUD insertions, although there are indications of a need to periodically monitor, and perhaps retrain, personnel, be they paramedic or physician, in the techniques of IUD insertion.

Abstract
To determine the wind directions and speeds on Venus, as each Pioneer probe fell to the surface we tracked its motion in three dimensions using a combination of Doppler and long-baseline radio interferometric methods. Preliminary results from this tracking, coupled with results from test observations of other spacecraft, enable us to estimate the uncertainties of our eventual determinations of the velocity vectors of the probes with respect to Venus. For altitudes below about 65 kilometers and with time-averaging over 100-second intervals, all three components of the velocity should have errors of the order of 0.3 meter per second or less.

Abstract
Colonoscopy, when performed for appropriate indications and by experienced, competent personnel, is a remarkably safe procedure. The occasional complications which occur may be the result of pneumatic, mechanical or electrical injuries to the colon or may develop as secondary disorders involving other organ systems. Most complications can be successfully prevented by adequately preparing both the endoscopist and the patient and by avoiding colonoscopy when specific contraindications are present. Should complications occur, their management generally follows established surgical principles. Even though colonoscopy has made a dramatic impact upon the diagnosis of and therapy for disease of the large intestines, it is important for practitioners to be mindful of its limitations. Future developments, applied rationally, can be expected to extend its usefulness and further improve its safety.

Abstract
Gingival biopsy has been advocated as a readily available, safe, rapid histologic confirmation of the clinical diagnosis of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. Eighteen gingival biopsies from 16 patients with proven thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura were reviewed. Seven (39%) showed characteristic histologic changes: [1] subendothelial hyalinelike deposits; [2] intraluminal deposits; [3] lack of inflammatory change in vessels and stroma. To assess specificity, gingival sections from 154 patients with oral pathology only and from 50 unselected autopsies were reviewed: 10% to 20% of biopsies from patients with oral pathology only (primarily inflammation) and three of 50 autopsy specimens showed occasional intraluminal deposits but no subendothelial deposits. In addition, other histologic features permitted them to be distinguished from thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. We conclude that gingival biopsy in thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, although helful in confirming the diagnosis, is less often positive than has been suggested. Biopsy of grossly inflamed gingiva should be avoided.

Abstract
This paper presents the socio-demographic characteristics, medical histories, and clinical data on 651 women sterilized by interval minilaparotomy procedures in Manila, Philippines. About two thirds of the procedures were performed with local anesthesia; the Pomeroy technique was used for tubal ligation. In 2.8% of the patients, salpingectomy or fimbriectomy was performed on one side because of surgical difficulties and complications. Surgical difficulties were encountered in 19.8% of the procedures; adhesions (4.3%) and bowel interference (4.0%) were the most frequent causes of surgical difficulty. Complications occurred during surgery in 1.7% of the procedures. Early postoperative complications were noted in 9.1% of the cases. None of the patients required readmission to the hospital. While 612 women were followed up at 6 months, 299 were followed up at 12 months. One women (0.2%) became pregnant after sterilization; at repeat minilaparotomy, ligation of the left round ligament rather than the tube was observed. Pelvic surgery, other than pregnancy-related surgery, during the year following sterilization was reported for one patient who underwent exploratory laparotomy with appendectomy and oophorocystectomy. Menstrual pattern changes were minimal. The results of this study suggest that tubal ligation via minilaparotomy is practical, safe, and effective.

Abstract
The authors present 9 cases of xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis observed in the "Juan XXIII" Hospital in Tarragona. They emphasize the relationship between lithiasis, chronic urinary infection and antigenic stimulation for the development of this entity, the progressive result of a lesion in the kidney tissue with immobilized infectious calcareous deposits. In the granulomatous lesion they find cells called antigen-antibody quartets, with foamy-type histiocytes, the nodular collections of which constitute the key to X.P. The formation of lymphocytic germinal centres is another antigenic stimulus in some parts of the kidney tissue. These structures are due to the storing of antibodies and therefore the immunoglobulins would not be released towards the blood stream, which would explain changes in the immunoglobulins in these patients' serum.

Abstract
Experience with the LEM intrauterine device in an immediate postpartum program at the Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital, Manila, Philippines, is reported. During a 6-month period, the LEM was inserted in 1359 women immediately after normal term deliveries. The early expulsion rate was high, but removals for bleeding or pain were minimal. Pregnancy rates during the second 6 months of use were higher than those reported previously for postpartum insertions of the LEM device.

Abstract
The results of current investigation into cellular kinetics of both normal and abnormal human genital tissue have stimulated interest in programming chemotherapeutic drug regimens for the treatment of genital cancer. This report outlines the results of cell kinetic studies of normal and abnormal squamous epithelium of the female genital tract and presents preliminary results of a regimen utilizing methotrexate, hydroxyurea, and vincristine in patients with far-advanced squamous-cell cancer of the vulva, vagina, and cervix. A total of 92 patients have received 444 courses of programmed chemotherapy by either pelvic intra-arterial infusion or systemic administration of the drugs. Our results are presented and the theoretical basis of the research is discussed.

Abstract
The authors carried out a survey of information proved by 16 institutions on a series of 1200 cases of epithelioma of the tip of the tongue to present before a meeting of European practitioners of curietherapy. They examined indications for curietherapy using radium and iridium alone or in association with external treatment by telecobaltherapy and gives details of the results -- local cures, cures maintained over three and over five years, necroses -- corresponding to the degree of development of the primary tumour. They indicate the possibilites of curietherapy in lesions of varying size and discuss indications for thorough curettage. They draw attention to the fact that lesions at an advanced stage chiefly require external irradiation (Cobalt 60 and gamma photons) or combined irradiation and chemotherapy.

Abstract
Occult gastrointestinal bleeding was defined as continued bleeding in spite of a normal series of roentgenorgrams of the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract, barium enema, and sigmoidoscopy. Twenty-six such patients were treated. A thorough systematic evaluation, including gastroscopy, colonoscopy, visceral angiography, and isotopic scanning, was done preoperatively. Using colonoscopy and arteriography, nearly 60% of the bleeding sites were identified. Seventy-six percent of the lesions identified were in the terminal part of the ileum or the ascending colon. Exploratory laparotomy should be performed for life-threatening hemorrhage or as a diagnostic test only after a thorough preoperative evaluation. If results of a complete preoperative evaluation including arteriography were normal, then the likelihood of finding a discrete cause of bleeding at laparotomy was high (80%). A systematic evaluation and diligence of both physcian and patient in localizing the site of bleeding are essential.
