Abstract
Total protein patterns of amniotic fluid samples of different age groups, following polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis, showed a wide range of variation in early pregnancy, but no two cases had identical banding, indenticating their genetic variability. An assessment has been made here of the total protein, albumin and transferrin patterns from normal fluids of different age groups by gel electrophoresis, in order to observe the genetic variations and relationship with foetal age, if any.

Abstract
The excitation efficiencies of a few lower order modes in a W-type fiber have been studied when the modes are excited with tilted as well as off-set Gaussian beams. The effect of beam size, angle of incidence, the radius of curvature of the incident wavefront, and the off-axis displacement on the excitation efficiencies has been obtained. It is found that in order to couple maximum power into the fundamental mode, the incident wavefront must be plane and the beam must be incident axially along the fiber with a suitable value of the beam size.

Abstract
Bilateral inked palmar impressions of 150 male tubercular patients and those of 150 normal controls (males) have been studied comparatively. Patients and controls show deviation from each other with respect to 1. biological concordance-disconcordance in line C and hypothenar patterns, 2. bilateral and left-homolateral (not right) differences in Plato's modal types of line C and 3. occurrence of hypothenar (R + L only) and III interdigital patterns (L-homolateral only). It is significant that tubercular patients do not show any difference with the normal controls in a reliable measure like main-line-index and by and large in occurrence of patterns also (with two exceptions only). Natural selection does not seem to be operative on palmar dermatoglyphic traits.

Abstract
The occurrence of different types of hemoglobin variants in India has been well-documented in urban populations and in certain tribal areas. Beta-thalassaemia and hemoglobins D,E,H,S, and rare variants like Hb Lepore, have been found in varying percentages. There is a higher incidence of Hb E in the Eastern region and of Hb D in certain Northern populations. The association of Hb E with beta thalassaemia G6PD deficiency has been established. The relationship with other environmental factors, like malaria, is not yet clear.

Abstract
A series of 200 normal serum samples obtained from healthy blood donors belonging to different religious communities and casters were examined for transferrin phenotypes by vertical polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Of these, 196 showed the common CC phenotype, while 4 showed CD phenotype, without any correlation with the caste or community. In another study involving 102 cases of malignancy, no relationship was observed between th transferrin phenotype and the type of malignancy, except in the case of Hodgkin's disease, which showed B2C phenotype.

Abstract
Thyroidal function in goats as estimated by PBI values of blood serum showed a very high activity in oestrus, followed by that in pregnancy state. There was significant increase in PBI values between oestrus and non-pregnancy groups. The lack of significance between pregnancy and non-pregnancy values has been explained. Mean PBI values in oestrus, pregnancy and non-pregnancy were respectively 5.91, 5.31 and 3.74 mug/100 ml blood serum.

Abstract
The distribution of haptoglobin (Hp) phenotypes in patients with different types of cancer was compared with those in the normal population, with the aid of vertical disc polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The Hp1 gene frequency (0.0647) of the normal population exhibited only a slight difference from that of the cancer patients, as against previous records. The only appreciable difference was in the range of mobility of the Hp2 bands from the origin in individuals with Hp 2-1 and 2-2 phenotypes.

Abstract
Intraclass correlation values have been studied in a sample of 50 MZ and 50 DZ twins with respect to fourteen palmar dermatoglyphic metric traits in binary combinations. The results confirm the general trends already shown in singleton studies. The shape of the palmar surface does not appear to be significantly correlated with other metric traits. Generally speaking, a large independence has been found between the various traits.
