Abstract
To systematically summarize the evidence on the effectiveness of measures regarding tobacco control in China. Papers on several databases published between 1990 and 2009 were systematically searched. Methods in American Guide to Community Preventive Services were used to evaluate the quality and strength of evidence on the effectiveness of tobacco control programs. Overall, 282 studies were included in this paper, but only 75 (26.41%) studies had acceptable execution quality. Items as pharmaceutical therapy and behavior intervention in the smoking population that would show sufficient evidence on the effectiveness of the programs. In general population, multi-component intervention programs appeared to be effective. However, the effectiveness regarding items as clinical consultation, therapy with traditional Chinese medicine, education programs alone, non-smoking related laws and regulations etc. were of insufficient evidence. The overall execution quality of intervention studies on tobacco control in China was considered to be poor and few of them would show the evidence on the effectiveness of the programs. Only few studies on non-smoking related laws and regulations touched upon the positive effectiveness on this issue. We suggested that the execution and evaluation on non-smoking related laws and regulations be strengthened.

Abstract
This pilot study evaluated the effects of coadministration of metformin with clomiphene citrate (CC) and human menopausal gonadotrophin (HMG) in women with CC-resistant polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Sixty women with PCOS were randomly assigned to receive 3 months' treatment with metformin or placebo together with CC and HMG. Transvaginal ultrasound was used to monitor follicular development and ovulation was induced by human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG). The number of dominant follicles, the oestradiol level on the day HCG was given and the amount of HMG required were significantly lower in the metformin group than in the placebo group, whereas the mono-ovulatory rate and pregnancy rate in the third cycle were significantly higher. The cumulative pregnancy rate in the metformin group (43.3%) was higher than in the placebo group (20.0%), but this difference did not reach statistical significance. In conclusion, coadministration of metformin with CC and HMG reduced the amount of HMG required and increased the mono-ovulatory rate and pregnancy rate.

Abstract
Background In recent years, problems like insufficient coordination, low efficiency, and heavy working load in national communicable disease surveillance systems in China have been pointed out by many researchers. To strengthen the national communicable disease surveillance systems becomes an immediate concern. Since the World Health Organization has recommended that a structured approach to strengthen national communicable disease surveillance must include an evaluation to existing systems which usually begins with a systematic description, we conducted the first survey for communicable disease surveillance systems in China, in order to understand the situation of core and support surveillance activities at province-level and county-level centers for disease control and prevention (CDCs). Methods A nationwide survey was conducted by mail between May and October 2006 to investigate the implementation of core and support activities of the Notifiable Disease Reporting System (NDRS) and disease-specific surveillance systems in all of the 31 province-level and selected 14 county-level CDCs in Mainland China The comments on the performance of communicable disease surveillance systems were also collected from the directors of CDCs in this survey. Results The core activities of NDRS such as confirmation, reporting and analysis and some support activities such as supervision and staff training were found sufficient in both province-level and county-level surveyed CDCs, but other support activities including information feedback, equipment and financial support need to be strengthened in most of the investigated CDCs. A total of 47 communicable diseases or syndromes were under surveillance at province level, and 20 diseases or syndromes at county level. The activities among different disease-specific surveillance systems varied widely. Acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), measles and tuberculosis (TB) surveillance systems got relatively high recognition both at province level and county level. Conclusions China has already established a national communicable disease surveillance framework that combines NDRS and disease-specific surveillance systems. The core and support activities of NDRS were found sufficient, while the implementation of those activities varied among different disease-specific surveillance systems.

Abstract
Background Decoding neural activities associated with limb movements is the key of motor prosthesis control. So far, most of these studies have been based on invasive approaches. Nevertheless, a few researchers have decoded kinematic parameters of single hand in non-invasive ways such as magnetoencephalogram (MEG) and electroencephalogram (EEG). Regarding these EEG studies, center-out reaching tasks have been employed. Yet whether hand velocity can be decoded using EEG recorded during a self-routed drawing task is unclear. Methods Here we collected whole-scalp EEG data of five subjects during a sequential 4-directional drawing task, and employed spatial filtering algorithms to extract the amplitude and power features of EEG in multiple frequency bands. From these features, we reconstructed hand movement velocity by Kalman filtering and a smoothing algorithm. Results The average Pearson correlation coefficients between the measured and the decoded velocities are 0.37 for the horizontal dimension and 0.24 for the vertical dimension. The channels on motor, posterior parietal and occipital areas are most involved for the decoding of hand velocity. By comparing the decoding performance of the features from different frequency bands, we found that not only slow potentials in 0.1-4 Hz band but also oscillatory rhythms in 24-28 Hz band may carry the information of hand velocity. Conclusions These results provide another support to neural control of motor prosthesis based on EEG signals and proper decoding methods.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To construct a stable HCV-producing cell model for anti-HCV drug research. METHODS The HCV-ribozyme recombinant plasmid pJFH1-Rbz was constructed to generate the exact 5' and 3' ends of HCV genomic RNA by placing two self-cleaving ribozymes at both ends of the HCV JFH-1 cDNA. The plasmid was then transfected into HepG2 cells and the resultant clones were screened with G418. Subsequently, immunofluorescence and Western blot were performed to detect the expression of HCV core protein, HCV RNA level was quantitated by TaqMan real-time PCR method and HCV particles was detected by electron microscopy. RESULTS HCV core protein was detected in the screened cell clone, and the level of HCV RNA was up to 1000,0000 copies/ml in the culture medium. Electron microscopy showed the viral particles in the culture suspension were approximately 55 nm in diameter. IFN-treating experiment demonstrated that the HCV RNA level decreased with the increasing concentration of IFN alpha. CONCLUSION We constructed a stable HCV-producing cell model which can be used for anti-HCV drug research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the correlation of rs2106809 from angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 gene with antihypertensive effects of benazepril, as well as its interactions with polymorphisms of angiotensinogen(AGT) and angiotensin II type 1 receptor(AGTR1) gene. METHODS Correlation between rs2106809 and blood pressure reduction was estimated based on a field trail with 1 831 hypertensive patients using benazepril for 2 weeks. Generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction (GMDR) was used to explore the interactions of rs2106809 and 8 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of AGTR1 gene and 3 SNPs of AGT gene. RESULTS rs2106809 was found to be associated with reduction in systolic blood pressure and pulse pressure in women, as well as pulse pressure reduction in men. T allele carriers presented more blood pressure reduction (1.4, 1.3 and 0.9 mmHg/T allele respectively). Gene-gene interactions involving rs2106809 were found in systolic blood pressure reduction of men, and the response to benazepril of non-sensitive genotypes carriers was 8.2 (95% confidence interval: 6.6-9.7) mmHg, lower than that of sensitive genotypes carriers. CONCLUSION rs2106809 might act as an independent influencing factor or component of gene-gene interaction in blood pressure reducing effects of benazepril.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To develop an adherence rating score (ARS) system specific for tuberculosis (TB) patients. METHODS A cross-sectional survey of 124 TB patients was conducted to figure out risk factors for adherence to treatment. The step-wise logistic regression models were used for selecting adherence-related variables. ARS was developed based on the weighting scores of the parameters of all the predicted variables in the logistic model. The reliability and responsibility of ARS was evaluated by using external data from an open label randomized controlled trial on 574 TB patients. The patients were grouped as adherence group (247 patients) and non-adherence group (327 patients) based on the predicted ARS. And the non-adherence group was randomized divided into a trail group (146 patients) and a control group (181 patients). The intervention for the trail group was custom health educational material aimed to reduce ARS, while the intervention for control groups was general TB education material, which was routinely used in the current local TB control settings. The cumulative non-adherence rates of the three groups were compared with each other after six-month follow-up period of treatment. RESULTS The ARS system had 7 items which covered the following domains: disease status, psychology, patients' KAP (knowledge, attitude, and practice), regularly life-style and social supports. The score of ARS was 2.38+/-0.18 (mean+/-SD) for adherence patients, and 4.69 +/-0.20 (mean+/-SD) for non-adherence patients (t=8.52, P<0.01). In the randomized controlled trial, the six months cumulative non-adherence rates ware 24.7% for the trail group and it was 41.4% for the control group(P<0.01); while the six months cumulative non-adherence rates were not statistical significant difference between trail group and adherence group (P>0.05). CONCLUSION The ARS system was reliability and validity for evaluating the adherence of TB treatment in the stop TB settings in China.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the role of genetic and environmental factors in the onset of smoking in Chinese male twins. METHODS Retrospective data on initiation and age at onset of smoking, reported by 1,006 adult twin pairs [aged 18 year-old or more, 638 pairs of monozygotic (MZ) twins and 368 pairs of dizygotic (DZ) twins] were analyzed to calculate the heritability of smoking behavior and smoking initiation. RESULTS Different from western culture, 66.8% of males in this Chinese sample are smokers or have the experience of smoking, but only 0.2% of females do so. In the MZ twins, 88.7% (566/638 pairs) of them are both smokers or have smoking experience or both non-smokers, while the number is 63.6% (234/368 pairs) in the DZ twins. The heritability of smoking in this Chinese twin sample is 69.0%+/-4.1%. The smokers usually started their smoking at the age of 20.4+/-5.3 years old. The correlation coefficient for age at onset of smoking in male MZ twin smokers is 0.393, compared to correlation coefficient 0.860 in male DZ twin smokers. CONCLUSION The moderate level of heritability shows that genetic factors have influence on smoking choice; when the smokers start their smoking, however, this depends more on individual environmental variation in our Chinese twin sample.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To find out the economic laws regulating medical service demand in accordance with influencing factors at the township level, thus to provide references for further adjusting the medical service demand reasonably in the future. METHODS The model of medical service demand was established to measure the elasticity of demand in 49 township health clinics in 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007. RESULTS The price elasticity of outpatient and inpatient demand was stable during the four periods, and the average value was -0.029 and -0.132 respectively; the average value of income elasticity was 0.973 and 0.977, registering a downward trend in general. CONCLUSION The medical service demand at the township level is price inelastic, indicating that it is a necessity for rural residents. The downward trend of income elasticity under the influence of some health policies illustrates a lightening in economic burden for medical service demand among rural residents in township health clinics.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of histamine receptor antagonists on vasoconstriction induced by electrical stimulation (ES) on posterior auricular nerve, and to explore the pre- and post-synaptic effects of sympathetic histamine on the vasomotor responses of vascular smooth muscle in rabbit ear. METHODS ES was applied to posterior auricular nerves of the whole rabbit ear at 10 Hz, 20 Hz and 40 Hz, respectively. Besides, the whole ear was perfused with different histamine receptor antagonists under constant perfusion pressure, and the changes in the flow rate of perfusate were observed. RESULTS The flow rate of venous outflow was decreased by ES at all the 3 frequencies. The ES-induced vasoconstriction at 20 Hz and 40 Hz could be partly inhibited by H(1) receptor antagonist chlorpheniramine (P < 0.05). After exhaustion of histamine in mast cells by pretreatment with specific mast cell degranulator compound 48/80, chlorpheniramine could still inhibit the ES-induced flow rate reduction. In contrast, H(2) receptor antagonist cimetidine could enhance the 40-Hz ES-induced flow rate reduction (P < 0.05). Moreover, ES-induced vasoconstriction at the 3 frequencies could all be enhanced by H(3) receptor antagonist thioperamide (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Stimulation on the auricular nerve may evoke histamine release from sympathetic nerves rather than from mast cells. Moreover, the functions of sympathetic histamine vary from pre-synaptic modulation to post-synaptic vasoconstriction or vasodilatation, via activation of different histamine receptors.

Abstract
A 2-yr study was conducted to evaluate the tillering and yield response of rice, Oryza sativa L., whose culms were injured artificially or by larval sugarcane borers, Diatraea saccharalis (F.). Artificially injured plants produced approximately 0.49 more tillers than uninjured plants, similar to what has previously been reported for larval injured plants. In contrast, artificial injury did not affect yield per tiller, whereas larval injury did. The proximity of larval injury to the panicle had a negative impact on tiller yield, whereas artificial injury did not. Artificial injury apparently resulted in less injury to vascular tissue than did sugarcane borer larval injury. Until an artificial method of injury is developed that mimics the effects of larval feeding, further injury studies will continue to require sugarcane borer larvae.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the feasibility of a simple random sampling on surveys at the community level and to evaluate the quality of samples under survey. METHODS A simple random sample of households was taken, based on the electronic listings of community households from Gongshu and Xiacheng districts of Hangzhou city. One of the adults aged 18 to 64 years in the sampled households was identified with KISH method to finish a questionnaire survey. More than 500 people from the sample size was required in each district. RESULTS Of 950 sampled households in Xiacheng district, 511 (53.8%) finished the survey while 506 (36.7%) out of the 1380 sampled households in Gongshu district did. The proportions of non-response due to the following reasons as: none with eligible age in the households, relocation of the original household, mass relocation of the community, and errors in the household listings etc. were 38.3% and 43.5% respectively, in the two districts. Proportions attributed to non-response and refusal to response of sampled household or individual were 8.0% and 19.9% respectively. No statistical significant differences in age and gender were found between the surveyed samples and the population in the sampled households, or in gender between the populations in the sampled households and in Hangzhou city. However, the population in the sampled households showed a more aging population structure than the population in Hangzhou city. CONCLUSION In a geographically limited area, using a simple random sampling method to do the survey is feasible, based on the electronic listings of household. Enough time spent during the household visit guarantees the interviewers to get a representative sample of the sampling frame. There is an urgent need for the timeliness, completeness and accuracy of electronic household listings to be improved.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the relationship between types of social support and roles of supporters, on people living with HIV/AIDS, in rural areas of Henan province. METHODS A rural area from Henan province where the main route of HIV transmission was through blood collection was selected as the research site. Survivors registered in that area were randomly selected as subjects. Questionnaire on social support related to social network analysis paradigm was designed and face-to-face interview was used to collect information. Correspondence analysis method was adopted to analyze the relationship between types of social support and roles of social supporters. RESULTS 204 questionnaires were sorted out with 2227 pairs of bind between types of social support and roles of social supporters analyzed. According to scatter plot of row and column points, our data showed that support from the spouses was mainly associated with caring for daily life and companionship for medical treatment on the patients. The research subjects stated that they would primarily discuss over the major issues or chat with their parents and children as they were the ones that they could trust the most. However, they would turn to their brothers, sisters or other relatives to borrow money or asking for other kinds of help. Non-relatives were the resources on social interaction, like going-out together or borrowing life necessities. CONCLUSION Supporters with different social roles on HIV/AIDS issues, appeared to be corresponded to specific types of social support in rural areas of Henan province.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the protective effect of losartan against angiotensin II (AngII)-induced beta cell (RIN-m) impairment and explore its mechanism. METHODS In vitro cultured RIN-m cells were divided into control group, 100 nmol/L AngII group and losartan pretreatment group. After cell incubation with the corresponding agents for 24 h, the amount of basal (3.3 mmol/L) and glucose-stimulated (16.7 mmol/L) insulin secretion (GSIS) was detected by radioimmunoassay, and the cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) was assayed by flow cytometry with DCFH-DA staining; the mRNA and protein expressions of uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) were determined by RT-PCR and Western blotting, respectively. RESULTS The basal insulin secretion showed no significant differences between the 3 groups (P>0.05). The GSIS in 100 nmol/L AngII group was significantly lower than that of the control group (P<0.001), but losartan pretreatment markedly restored the insulin secretion function to a level comparable to that of the control group (P<0.05). Compared with the control group, 100 nmol/L AngII significantly increased the cellular ROS level and the mRNA and protein expressions of UCP2 (P<0.05), and these changes were eliminated by losartan pretreatment. CONCLUSIONS Losartan pretreatment offers protective effect against AngII-induced impairment of the GSIS of beta cells possibly by antagonizing the effects of AngII that causes increased ROS level and UCP2 expressions in beta-cells.

Abstract
LINGO-1 (leucine-rich repeat and Ig domain-containing, Nogo receptor-interacting protein) is an important component of the NgR receptor complex involved in RhoA activation and axon regeneration. The authors report on passive immunization with LINGO-1 polyclonal antiserum, a therapeutic approach to overcome NgR-mediated growth inhibition after spinal cord injury (SCI). The intrathecally administered high-titer rabbit-derived antiserum can be detected around the injury site within a wide time window; it blocks LINGO-1 in vivo with high molecular specificity. In this animal model, passive immunization with LINGO-1 antiserum significantly decreased RhoA activation and increased neuronal survival. Adult rats immunized in this manner show recovery of certain hindlimb motor functions after dorsal hemisection of the spinal cord. Thus, passive immunotherapy with LINGO-1 polyclonal antiserum may represent a promising repair strategy following acute SCI.

Abstract
Copy number variation (CNV) is common in genomic regions encoding immune-related genes and can impact polygenic autoimmunity. FCGR3B CNV is associated with susceptibility to systemic autoimmunity in Caucasian populations. In this study, we examined FCGR3B CNV in patients with the autoimmune disease lupus nephritis (LN) in a Chinese population. The study includes 202 patients with histologically verified LN and 146 geographically matched healthy controls. To identify CNV at the FCGRB locus, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was done with TaqMan( TM) probes and relative copy number was estimated with relative quantitative 2(-DeltaDeltaCt) method. The distribution of FCGR3B relative copy number did not differ significantly between the LN patients and the controls (1.17 +/- 0.42 for LN; 1.15 +/- 0.37 for controls; p = 0.627). The difference was still not significant when the data were stratified by gender. There was no significant difference when the LN patients were divided by pathological phenotype (proliferative LN compared with non-proliferative p = 0.511; AI < 12 compared with AI > or = 12, p = 0.401; and chronicity index (CI) < 4 compared with CI > or = 4, p = 0.058) or lupus disease activity index (SLEDAI < or = 10 compared with SLEDAI > 10, p = 0.996). The data suggest that FCGR3B CNV was not associated with LN development or progression in this Chinese population. These results were surprising given the strong in a Caucasian population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To express and purify the fusion protein of extracellular domain of human Ig domain-containing, neurite outgrowth inhibitor (Nogo) receptor-interacting protein-1 (LINGO-1(aa76-319)) in prokaryotic cells and prepare the rabbit anti-LINGO-1 polyclonal antibody (pAb). METHODS The 732 bp DNA sequence of hLINGO-1(aa76-319) was obtained from pCMV-SPORT6 by PCR and inserted into pET30a(+) plasmid to construct the prokaryotic expression plasmid pET30a(+)-hLINGO-1(aa76-319), which was subsequently transformed into E.coli. The target fusion protein was expressed with IPTG induction and purified by Ni(2+)-NTA affinity chromatography column. The antiserum against hLINGO-1(aa76-319) was obtained from the rabbits immunized with hLINGO-1(aa76-319), and the titer of the pAb was determined using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and its specificity identified using Western blotting. RESULTS The prokaryotic expression plasmid pET30a(+)-hLINGO-1(aa76-319) was constructed successfully. Efficient expression of the target fusion protein was achieved with IPTG induction at the optimal concentration of 0.4 mmol/L and culture temperature at 37 degrees celsius; for 2.5 h. The hLINGO-1(aa76-319) fusion protein was effectively expressed in E.coli as inclusion bodies, and the soluble protein was obtained through denaturation and refolding procedures, and the purified fusion protein showed a purity above 90%. The titer of the anti-hLINGO-1(aa76-319) pAb obtained by immunizing the rabbits with the purified protein reached 1:1.6x10(6), and Western blotting confirmed its good specificity. CONCLUSION The fusion protein hLINGO-1(aa76-319) with high purity has been obtained and the anti-hLINGO-1(aa76-319) pAb obtained shows a high titer and good specificity, which provide important experimental basis for further functional investigation of LINGO-1.

Abstract
The role of neoadjuvant therapy in the treatment of locally advanced esophageal carcinoma still remains controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy on pathological staging and prognosis in the patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Between January 1991 and December 2000, 473 patients with advanced esophageal carcinoma diagnosed by endoscopic biopsy underwent surgical resection in our center. With informed consent, they were randomized into four groups: neoadjuvant chemotherapy, neoadjuvant radiotherapy, neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy, and surgery alone (control group). The preoperative computed tomography staging criteria were the following: Stage I, the tumor limited to the esophageal lumen or the thickness of the esophageal wall varied between 3-5 mm; Stage II, the thickness exceeds 5 mm but no invasion to the mediastinum or distant metastasis; Stage III, the tumor invades adjacent mediastinal structure; and Stage IV, there is distant metastasis. The tumor resection rate, pathological stage, treatment-related complication, and survival among groups were compared. The radical resection rate for the patients in radiotherapy and radiochemotherapy groups was increased in comparison with the control group (P < 0.05). Their pathological stage after esophagectomy was regressed significantly than that of the control group (50.85%, 55.08% vs. 0%, P < 0.05). The adjuvant chemotherapy group did show significant improvement on resection rate and pathological staging compared with the control group. The treatment-related complication in the three neoadjuvant groups had no significant difference from that of the control group (P > 0.05). The 3-year survival rate of radiotherapy and radiochemotherapy groups were significantly higher than that of the control group (69.49%, 73.73% vs. 53.38%, P < 0.05). The 5-year survival rate of radiochemotherapy group was higher than that of the radiotherapy group although did not show a statistical difference (P > 0.05). Rational application of neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy seems to provide a modest benefit in radical resection and survival in patients with locally advanced esophageal carcinoma.

Abstract
A cell line BmN-SWU1 was established from the ovarian tissues of 3-day-old fourth instar Bombyx mori larvae of the 21-872nlw variety by performing primary cultures in Grace's medium supplemented with 20% fetal bovine serum (FBS). The cell line primarily consisted of short spindle cells and round cells. The frequency of cells with chromosome number 2n=56 was 80.5%; therefore, the cell line was considered to be a diploid cell line. The population-doubling time (PDT) at 45th passage line was 57.7h. This cell line was susceptible to the B. mori nuclear polyhedrovirus (BmNPV), and the median tissue culture infective dose (TCID(50)) at a cell density of 10(5) cells/ml was 16.3 OBs/ml. The transient expression efficiency of the green fluorescent protein (GFP) gene in this cell line was 54.8%. We used the BmN-SWU1 cell line to select and establish a GFP transgenic cell line.

Abstract
AIM Previous studies have shown that tenuigenin, a crude extract of Polygala tenuifolia Willd. that is commonly used in traditional Chinese herbal medicine for memory loss, can reduce the secretion of Abeta from cultured cells. However, the mechanism underlying this effect and the active compound derived from tenuigenin is unknown. In this study, a purified component of tenuigenin, tenuifolin, was examined and revealed to be an effective compound in vitro. METHODS Abeta secretion from three sets of COS-7 cells, each carrying a plasmid expressing a different form of APP was examined following the treatment with tenuifolin. Initially, tenuifolin was determined to have no inherent toxicity to either the transfected or wild type cells at the effective concentrations. Cells were then treated with 0.5-2.0 microg mL(-1) tenuifolin for 12 h and their media were examined via an ELISA for Abeta1-40 and Abeta-42. RESULTS We found that treatment with 2.0 microg mL(-1) tenuifolin significantly decreased Abeta secretion from COS-7 cells without altering the ratio of Abeta1-40 and Abeta-42. This effect is most probably due to inhibition of the beta-site APP cleaving enzyme as Abeta secretion was not inhibited from cells expressing the C99 fragment. CONCLUSION Tenuifolin is an effective compound from tenuigenin. We believe that this finding should lead the way for future experiments to determine the exact mechanism for tenuifolin's effect on Abeta secretion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In China, 30 human cases of avian influenza A (H5N1) virus infection were identified through July 2008. We conducted a retrospective case-control study to identify risk factors for influenza H5N1 disease in China. METHODS A questionnaire about potential influenza H5N1 exposures was administered to 28 patients with influenza H5N1 and to 134 randomly selected control subjects matched by age, sex, and location or to proxies. Conditional logistic regression analyses were performed. RESULTS Before their illness, patients living in urban areas had visited wet poultry markets, and patients living in rural areas had exposure to sick or dead backyard poultry. In multivariable analyses, independent risk factors for influenza H5N1 were direct contact with sick or dead poultry (odds ratio [OR], 506.6 [95% confidence interval {CI}, 15.7-16319.6]; P<.001), indirect exposure to sick or dead poultry (OR, 56.9 [95% CI, 4.3-745.6]; P=.002), and visiting a wet poultry market (OR, 15.4 [95% CI, 3.0-80.2]; P=.001). CONCLUSIONS To prevent human influenza H5N1 in China, the level of education about avoiding direct or close exposures to sick or dead poultry should be increased, and interventions to prevent the spread of influenza H5N1 at live poultry markets should be implemented.

Abstract
AIM: To analyze clinical features of interferon alpha-induced severe thrombocytopenia.
METHODS: Twenty six cases with interferon alpha-induced severe thrombocytopenic purpu-ra were collected from Medline and CNKI and another case from our clinical practice, and all cases were classified into two groups: immune thrombocytopenic purpura group and throm-botic thrombocytopenic purpura group accord-ing to their mechanism. Clinical manifestations, results of laboratory examinations, treatment and prognosis of different groups were observed and analyzed.
RESULTS: Twenty four cases of ITP presented hemorrhagic tendency, severe thrombocytope-nia, elevated antiplatelet antibody or platelet related IgG, megacaryocyte hyperplasia. The platelet counts increased after discontinuation of IFNα and treatment with immune suppression agents for 1 or 2 weeks and the prognosis of ITP was good. Three cases of TTP presented fever, decreased platelet count, hemolytic anemia, neu-ropsychological symptoms and renal disorder. Plasma transfusion was the main therapy with poor prognosis and high mortality. ITP and TTP usually occurred in the process of anti- HCV treatment of IFNα.
CONCLUSION: Two kinds of IFNα-induced se-vere thrombocytopenia could occur during the process of anti-virus. Physicians should recog-nize and treat them in time correctly.

Abstract
AIM: To evaluate BIG on HBV recurrence after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT), and to investigate prevention strategies for liver transplantation with YMDD.
METHODS: One hundred and twenty four cases who underwent orthotopic liver transplantation and fulfilled the enrollment criteria, were retrospectively analyzed. HBV reinfection was analyzed and compared between long-term intramuscular hepatitis B virus immunoglobulin & entecavir group and intramuscular hepatitis B virus & immunoglobulin and Lamivudine group. The effect of the prophylaxis for HBV reinfection in patients with YMDD mutants was investigated. HBV markers in serum, HBV DNA and the ratio of HBV reinfection were analyzed.
RESULTS: Entecavir group with a follow- up period of 19.5 ± 9.4 mo, showed no HBV reinfection. However, 10 patients had been traced for 18.1 ± 6.4 mo in lamivudine group. The rate of HBV reinfection in entecavir group was significantly lower than lamivudine group (0% vs 11.9%, P < 0.05). The patients with YMDD mutants before transplantation in Entecavir group had been traced no postoperative HBV reinfection.
CONCLUSION: Entecavir and intramuscular HBIG as the prophylaxis of HBV reinfection is more effective than the lamivudine and intramuscular HBIG, especially for patients with preoperative YMDD mutants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An effective, systematic program of screening, diagnosis and intervention against hearing loss in infants could help them avoid developmental impediments and could help society stem preventable healthcare burdens. We assessed the feasibility and outcomes of a new public health universal newborn hearing screening program (UNHSP) for neonates born in Shanghai. METHODS From March 2002 to June 2007, we conducted a two-stage hearing loss screening program for neonates born at all 105 delivery hospitals in Shanghai. Institutional participants in the program followed standardized testing criteria and procedures. The first stage of screening occurred in the hospital during the third day post-birth; positive infants underwent a second-stage outpatient screening on Day 42. Positive infants were examined at clinical diagnosis centres, and interventions were conducted at rehabilitation centres. In 2003, a random sample of parents were interviewed about the program, and their level of stress over learning their child screened positive were recorded and analyzed. FINDINGS Overall, our program screened 72.98% of eligible infants and provided effective interventions within six months to 86.31% of those with hearing oss. During the 5-year study, first-stage screenings assessed 90.85% of 616,880 eligible infants and found 12.16% positive. Day 42 screenings had a 65.68% participation rate and a positive rate of 14.75%. Of these, 0.146% were deemed permanently hearing impaired within three months of birth. Parental satisfaction measures exceeded 90%. INTERPRETATION A government-sponsored public health program to screen, diagnose, treat and provide interventions for all newborns with permanently hearing impairment can be effectively implemented and can achieve outcomes that surpass comparable clinical initiatives.

Abstract
The physiological activities of the cardiovascular system are under the control of autonomic nervous system (ANS). Recent researches have found that autonomic dysfunction, especially the withdrawal of vagal activity, was closely related to the etiology, course and prognosis of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Based on the current status and our achievements in this area, we discuss vagal regulation of different parts of the heart and the mechanism of vagal protection of myocardium. Using a force transducer and standard microelectrodes recording technology, we found that the vagus nerve transmitter--acetylcholine (ACh) had direct effects on ventricular myocytes in mammals: It inhibited the contractility and shortened the action potential duration of cardiac myocytes. We proved the existence of muscarinic receptors and vagal nerves innervation in ventricle with histochemical staining and molecular biological methods. Furthermore, ACh-activated potassium channel (KACh) was found in the ventricles of some animals by patch-clamp. Fade of the current (IK.ACh) to ACh in atrium was found in previous research, which was related to the muscarinic receptors and phosphorylation of G protein or potassium channel. However, the mechanism of the fade in ventricle needs to be further investigated. Combined with autonomic nervous evaluation methods (heart rate variability analysis) and relevant animal models, we studied the regulation of ANS during normal and morbid state, and proved the age-associated changes and compensatory effects of vagal control of hemodynamics after unilateral vagotomy. By increasing the vagal tension (ACh induced-preconditioning/postconditioning, aerobic exercise, beta receptor antagonist), we demonstrated protective effects of the vagus nerve on the ischemic myocardium and mechanism of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory effects on the inflammatory reaction induced by reperfusion injury. Evaluating cardiac autonomic nervous regulation and improving balance between sympathetic and vagal nerve will provide an important basis for the prevention and treatment of CVD.

Abstract
To present statistical methods on appropriate data analysis from complex surveys and errors arising from ignorance of weights or design of samples. We took Chinese National Nutrition and Health Survey in 2002 as an example to analyze the prevalence of hypertension among population aged 15 and over. We used four combinations of analyses, including with or without weighting or considering sample designs. If weights is omitted, it would result in biased prevalence estimates and also influence the estimates of standard errors. While omitting sample designs would result in underestimating the standard error estimates and then testing the false positive hypothesis. Through appropriate analysis, we found Chinese people in large-sized cities had the highest prevalence of hypertension (28.77%, 95%CI: 25.69% - 31.84%) while people in the poorest rural area having the lowest prevalence of hypertension (14.21%, 95%CI: 12.64% - 15.79%). The prevalence of hypertension among people in small and medium-sized cities and other rural areas ranged from 20.48% to 24.37% with statistically insignificant difference. It is necessary to use appropriate methods to analyze data from complex surveys.

Abstract
A 3-yr field experiment was conducted to evaluate the tolerance and compensatory response of rice (Oryza sativa L.) to injury caused by sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis (F.), as affected by cultivar (Cocodrie, Francis, and Jefferson), stage of crop growth during which the injury occurred (third tiller stage, panicle differentiation stage, and heading stage), and sugarcane borer density. The proportion of rice tillers with sugarcane borer injury (leaf and leaf sheath injury and/or stem injury) was lower when injury occurred at the third tiller stage (0.05) than at panicle differentiation (0.19) and heading (0.18). When injury occurred at the two latter stages, both the proportion of tillers with injury and the proportion of tillers with stem injury were negatively correlated with rainfall. Rainfall resulted in dislodgement and mortality of sugarcane borer eggs and larvae before the larvae entered the stems. Rice plant density in this study (111.1 plants/m2) was higher than recorded for previous research on rice compensation using potted rice or conducted in low-density hill production systems (26.7-51.3 plants/m2). Two mechanisms of within-plant tolerance/compensation were observed. Stem injured plants produced approximately 0.69 more tillers than uninjured plants, whereas tillers with leaf and leaf sheath injury produced larger panicles, up to 39.5 and 21.0% heavier than uninjured tillers, when injury occurred at third tiller stage and at panicle differentiation, respectively. Rice yield was not reduced with up to 23% injured tiller and up to 10% injured stems at the third tiller stage, 42% injured tillers and 17% injured stems at panicle differentiation, and 28% injured tillers and 14% injured stems at heading. Significant between-plant compensation was not detected, suggesting competition between adjacent plants is not significantly reduced by injury. Our results suggest that rice can tolerate and/or compensate for a level of stem borer injury previously considered to be economically damaging.

Abstract
The role of acetylcholine in the central and peripheral nervous systems is well established in adults. Cholinergic modulation of vascular functions and body fluid balance has been extensively studied. In the embryo-fetus, cholinergic receptors are widespread in the peripheral and central systems, including smooth muscle and the epithelial lining of the cardiovascular, digestive, and urinary systems, as well as in the brain. Fetal nicotine and muscarinic receptors develop in a pattern (e.g., amount and distribution) related to gestational periods. Cholinergic mechanisms have been found to be relatively intact and functional in the control of vascular homeostasis during fetal life in utero at least during the last third of gestation. This review focuses on the development of fetal nicotine and muscarinic receptors, and provides information indicating that central cholinergic systems are well developed in the control of fetal blood pressure and body fluid balance before birth. Therefore, the development of cholinergic systems in utero plays an important role in fetal vascular regulation, gastrointestinal motility, and urinary control.

Abstract
To clarify the necessity of applying appropriate statistical methods to calculate sampling error from data of cluster sample survey, we take a two-stage cluster sample survey developed from a population aged 15 and over as example. We use statistical methods based on the assumption of simple random samples and methods considering complex sample design to analyze our data, respectively. Through comparison, we hope to show the potential effects of using improper statistical methods to estimate sampling error on parameter estimation and hypothesis testing. Using standard error algorithms based on the assumption of simple random samples, the standard errors calculated often underestimate sampling error and the hypothesis testing even gets wrong conclusion. When the statistical methods and statistics package for complex survey data are already available, it is necessary for us to use appropriate methods to analyze and report the sampling errors of data from cluster sample survey.

Abstract
Have you felt frustration when fetal blood is needed for your studies in rats, or have you been concerned about fetal rat "blood" collected from decapitation? The traditional approach has been to collect fetal blood from decapitation of fetuses. The new method of collecting fetal blood is from the fetal heart, and makes it possible to obtain pure fetal blood at near-term in rodents for fetal studies. This study also demonstrated a significant difference of fetal blood oxygen levels between the traditional and new methods of blood collection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between haplotypes of S447X and Hind III polymorphisms of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) gene and serum lipids in a population-based twin cohort study in China. METHODS Twin subjects were collected based on the twin registry system of China. All twins were investigated by a standard questionnaire and physical examinations. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method was used to detect the genotypes of S447X and Hind III polymorphisms. Linkage disequilibrium test and haplotypes were estimated between two polymorphisms. RESULTS Nine hundred and eighty-seven pairs of twins were eligible for analysis. The two polymorphisms of LPL gene were significantly linkage disequilibrium. In female twins, the H- allele of Hind III polymorphism was significantly related to lower levels of triglycerides(TG) and lower risk of high TG dislipidemia, but those associations disappeared after adjusting the polymorphism of S447X. The H- X haplotype of those two polymorphisms was significantly related to lower TG and TG/HDL (decreasing 12.9% and 14.9% respectively), as well as significantly to lower risk of high TG dislipidemia (OR = 0.40). CONCLUSION The haplotypes of S447X and Hind III polymorphisms were significantly related to the favorable effect of lipids, but this effect was mostly determined by the polymorphism of S447X, while the effect of Hind III polymorphism was indirectly influenced by the linkage disequilibrium with S447X polymorphism.

Abstract
The Chinese National Twin Registry is the first and largest population-based twin registry in China. It was established in 2001. The primary goal of this program is the establishment of a population-based twin registry of 45,000 twin pairs from several regions representing north, south, urban, and rural areas in China. A secondary goal is to study genetic contributions to complex diseases, and to test associations of candidate genes with related phenotypes. Seven thousand, four hundred and twenty-three twin pairs have been enrolled in the registry, in which 1613 pairs have undergone detailed questionnaire assessments and physical examination. Based on the baseline registry, a twin cohort was established. Continued research includes studies on intermediate phenotypes of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and psychological studies in adult twins, studies on growth and development in adolescent twins, and so forth. The current state and future plans for the Chinese National Twin Registry will be discussed in this article.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To identify the genetic contribution to the variation in blood pressure (BP) response to angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs), single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the angiotensinogen (AGT), angiotensin receptor 1 (AGTR1), and angiotensin receptor 2 (AGTR2) genes were evaluated for their association with BP response to ACEI in Chinese patients with hypertension in a 2-stage design. METHODS AND RESULTS We selected 1447 hypertensive patients from a 3-year benazepril postmarket surveillance trial and genotyped them for 14 SNPs in the AGT, AGTR1, and AGTR2 genes. The AGT rs7079 (C/T) SNP (3'-untranslated region) was significantly associated with the response of diastolic BP to benazepril (diastolic BP response: -7.4 mm Hg for subjects with the CC genotype, -8.9 mm Hg for CA, and -10.1 mm Hg for AA; P=0.001). Although there was no association of individual SNPs in the AGTR1 gene, there was a graded response between common haplotypes and systolic BP reduction in the order of haplotype 2 (H2)/lack of haplotype 3 (non-H3) (-13.6 mm Hg) > non-H2/non-H3 (-10.9 mm Hg) > H3/non-H2 (-6.6 mm Hg) (P=0.004). The total variations in response to ACEI therapy that were explained by the AGT SNP and AGTR1 haplotype groups were 13% for systolic and 9% to 9.6% for diastolic BP, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AGT SNP rs7079 and AGTR1 haplotypes were associated with BP reduction in response to ACEI therapy in hypertensive Chinese patients. This will be useful in future studies, providing genetic markers to predict the hypertensive response to ACEI therapy.

Abstract
Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), a single-stranded DNA virus, is associated with postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). ORF2 protein (capsid) of PCV2 was recently demonstrated to be a major immunogenable to induce protection in pigs with a prime-boost protocol. In this study, the ORF2 gene of PCV2 was expressed in insect cells. The product self-assembled into particles that were structurally and antigenically indistinguishable from regular PCV2 capsids. To evaluated the immunogenicity of these virus-like particles, PCV2-free piglets were vaccinated with the crude lysate from recombinant baculovirus (Ac.ORF2)-infected insect cells, at doses of 0.1 ml (10(6) cells), 0.5 mL (5 x 10(6) cells) or 1.0 ml (10(7) cells). The immune response was monitored by an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for PCV2 antibody and lymphocyte proliferation assay. The ELISA results indicated that primary immune response was elicited with 0.5 ml or 1.0 ml of crude lysate from Ac.ORF2. After boost immunization, relatively higher levels of PCV2 antibody were elicited in 0.5-ml or 1.0-ml vaccinated groups, compared to the 0.1-ml group. In addition, higher PCV2 specific lymphocyte proliferation response was developed in piglets vaccinated with 0.5 ml or 1.0 ml of crude lysate, especially in those vaccinated with with 1.0 ml of crude lysate. Thus, the expressed ORF2 protein has significant potential as a subunit vaccine against PCV2 infection.
