Milk carbohydrates of marsupials. II. Quantitative and qualitative changes in milk carbohydrates during lactation in the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii)

Milk was collected at various stages of lactation from a group of tammar wallabies, M. eugenii, in which parturition had been synchronized. The milk carbohydrate was determined by a phenol-sulfuric acid method which had been modified to give equal colour yields for galactose and glucose. The mean carbohydrate content increased gradually during the first 6 months of lactation to a peak of 13 g hexose/100 ml of milk, but then fell rapidly to much lower values, over the following 2 months. Throughouth lactation, galactose was the predominant monosaccharide constituent of acid hydrolysates of the milk carbohydrate. Glucose, glucosamine, galactosamine and sialic acid were the only other monosaccharides present. Qualitative changes were investigated by gel filtration and thin-layer chromatography. During the first 6 months post partum the milk carbohydrate was composed of a variety of oligosaccharides including lactose, but from 8 months onwards it consisted mainly of free monosaccharides. Between 6 and 8 months an intermediate pattern was observed, i.e. a mixture of lower oligosaccharides and free monosaccharides. In two animals which suckled both a new-born pouch young and a young at foot, the mammary gland supplying the new-born secreted milk which was rich in oligosaccharides, whereas that supplying the young at foot produced milk in which the carbohydrates were mainly free monosaccharides, and which had a much lower carbohydrate content.

Ultrasonographic evaluation of chemotherapeutic response in hepatic metastases

Three hundred and thirty-four hepatic ultrasonograms were obtained in 93 patients to evaluate the chemotherapeutic response of their metastatic lesions. Four patterns of response were noted. The ultrasonographic results were correlated with those of other diagnostic modalities and found to be extremely accurate when lesions were judged to have improved, worsened, or remained unchanged. However, a fourth type of response, a change in the initial ultrasonographic pattern, was difficult to evaluate, and its significance is discussed.

Effect of progesterone pretreatment on the uptake of estradiol-17 beta by the uterine epithelium of the rat

Progesterone pretreatment of ovariectomised rats resulted in a moderate (44%) lowering of the level of nuclear estradiol receptors found in the uterine epithelium 2 h after a single injection of this estrogen.

Comparative red cell metabolism in the domestic dog and the dingo

A comparative study of the red cell characters, glycolytic enzymes and intermediates was made in the domestic dog and the dingo. No significant differences were found in any of the parameters studied except the enzyme level of NADH-MR which was significantly lower in dingoes (P less than 0.05).

Abdominal pansonography in the evaluation of renal cancer

Abdominal pansonography was performed in 34 patients after solid renal tumors were diagnosed. Included were evaluation of the inferior vena cava (IVC), the liver, and the retroperitoneal area. Additional findings including hepatic metastases, IVC extension of tumor, and retroperitoneal nodal masses were discovered in 14 patients. The role of pansonography as a noninvasive adjunctive diagnostic tool for more complete staging and treatment planning of renal cancer is discussed.

Ultrasound manifestations of hepatocellular carcinoma

The ultrasound patterns of primary hepatocellular carcinoma are described. Three types were found: a densely echogenic mass, diffuse disease, and a mixture of the two. These three patterns correspond to the previously reported angiographic and pathological manifestations of disease. The differential diagnosis is discussed.

Energy Requirements and Sodium and Water Turnovers in Two Captive Marsupial Carnivores: the Tasmanian Devil, Sarcophilus Harrisii, and the Native Cat, Dasyurus Viverrinus

Captive Sarcophilus harrisii and Dasyurus viverrinus were fed on rats and provided with water ad libitum. Apparent dry matter digestibility was about 80% and apparent energy digestibility was about 88% in both species. The daily water turnover rate was approximately 130 ml per W*0.82 in both species, but S. harrisii obtained substantially more water by drinking than D. viverrinus. Sodium turnover rates were closely correlated with food consumption.

Renal peripelvic extravasation: a complication of arteriography

Renal peripelvic extravasation is a known complication of intravenous urography in patients with acute ureteral obstruction. A case of bilateral peripelvic extravasation during arteriography is presented. Possible causes for the extravasation are discussed.

Ultrasonography of necrotic hepatic metastases

Twelve patients with sonolucent hepatic metastases studied with gray scale ultrasonography are presented. Extensive necrosis presumably accounts for the sonolucent appearance of the hepatic lesions. The spectrum of ultrasonographic features and correlations, particularly with computed tomography, are presented. The similarity between anechoic hepatic metastases and benign conditions of the liver is emphasized.

Ultrasonography in the evaluation of post-nephrectomy renal cancer patients

The role of ultrasonography in the evaluation of 12 patients who had previously undergone nephrectomy for renal carcinoma is discussed. Ultrasonography is a useful, noninvasive means of evaluating such patients for recurrence of disease. The ultrasonographic features of retroperitoneal recurrence and a potential diagnostic pitfall of bowel loops in the renal bed are emphasized.

The gray scale sonographic appearance of intra-abdominal mesenchymal sarcomas

Twenty-eight patients with intra-abdominal mesenchymal sarcomas were examined with gray scale ultrasonography. Masses were present in the mesentery, abdominal hollow viscera, liver, and retroperitoneal areas. Four different ultrasonic patterns were observed in the extra hepatic abdominal masses: (a) hyperechoic masses intermixed with anechoic zones; (b) hyperechoic masses with central fluid-filled zones; (c) homogeneous hyperechoic masses; and (d) homogeneous hypoechoic masses. Three of 6 patients with hepatic masses were totally anechoic alongside other more typical metastatic patterns. The presence of a large mass with sonographic signs of necrosis should strongly suggest the possibility of sarcoma. The differential diagnosis is discussed.

Ultrasonic detection of renal tumor extension into the inferior vena cava

Five cases of extension of renal carcinoma into the inferior vena cava were detected using gray scale ultrasonography. Two different ultrasonographic appearances reflecting the intracaval tumor were observed. Four patients had one or two intraluminal echogenic nodules or thrombi, and the fifth case manifested generalized caval dilatation with innumerable diffuse low amplitude echoes emanating from the lumen. The role of ultrasonography in the complete evaluation of the patient with renal carcinoma is discussed, and the ultrasonographic features of intracaval tumor are demonstrated.

Gray scale ultrasonographic evaluation of hepatic cystic disease

Eight patients with various forms of hepatic cystic disease studied with gray scale ultrasonography are described. Four had solitary cysts, two had multiple simple liver cysts, and two had congenital polycystic liver and kidney disease. The spectrum of ultrasonographic features in benign cystic disease of the liver is discussed. All eight patients were felt to have malignant disease in the liver prior to ultrasonographic evaluation. The value of gray scale ultrasound as a noninvasive means of differentiating cystic disease from suspected metastatic disease is emphasized.

Gray scale ultrasonography of adrenal neoplasms

Ultrasonic characteristics of 21 adrenal neoplasms (19 patients) examined by gray scale ultrasonography are reviewed. The significance of the adrenal-renal cleavage plane is discussed. In our experience the cleavage plane only has definite localization value when it separates the adrenal gland from the kidney on all ultrasonographic sections. Compression of the posterior wall and/or anterior displacement of the inferior vena cava was seen in about two-thirds of the right adrenal tumors. The difficulty in examining left adrenal masses is emphasized. Ultrasonography has proved to be an excellent screening procedure for adrenal tumors.
