Abstract
Ewes were immunized against androstenedione (Fecundin) and assigned to be mated 14 days (179 ewes Group C) or 25 days (174 ewes Group B) after a booster immunization with Fecundin. The anti-androstenedione titres at these times were 6790 and 3240 respectively (P less than 0.01). The remaining 169 ewes were untreated controls (Group A). Ewes were mated to entire rams (12 rams to 180 ewes) at their second oestrus after synchronization of oestrus. Immunization against androstenedione caused a shortening of the time from sponge removal to mating (Day 0) and a decrease in the percentage of ewes mated by the rams. Also, ovulation rate was increased after immunization (P less than 0.01), being 1.42, 2.16 and 1.93 for Groups A, C and B respectively. Egg recovery rates on Day 2 were lower in immunized ewes and there was some indication that fertilization rates were lowered. On Day 13 after mating a higher proportion of blastocysts was recovered from ewes in Group A than from those in Groups B and C. Immunization resulted in lower fertilization rates and smaller blastocysts with lower mitotic indexes (P less than 0.01). At Days 24-32 of pregnancy fetal weight was lower in the immunized ewes. At all sampling stages, the proportion of ewes pregnant (fertility) was lowered in immunized ewes. The results of the present study show that significant reproductive wastage occurs in androstenedione-immunized Merino ewes, with lower rates of embryo recovery and delayed embryonic development being found in comparison to controls.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
A literature review has addressed the two major factors in disease progression in sick sinus syndrome: atrioventricular block and atrial fibrillation. An incidence of atrioventricular block of 8.4 percent in a follow-up period of 34.2 months is considered clinically significant and sufficient to justify use of a ventricular lead in pacemaker management. Atrial fibrillation occurs much more commonly (22.3%) in ventricular pacing than with atrial demand pacing (3.9%) in a 2 1/2 year observation period. Coincident with the reduction in arrhythmia achieved by atrial demand pacing is a significant reduction in systemic embolism (1.6% vs. 13%). This is considered largely to be due to the improved rhythm control with AAI pacing but also possibly to the avoidance of retrograde atrioventricular conduction. The benefits of AAI pacing in terms of mortality in sick sinus syndrome have not yet been fully assessed. In the future, DDI pacing is recommended with, in some patients, the addition of another sensor to provide rate responsiveness on exercise.

Abstract
A within patient double blind prospective study of symptoms and exercise tolerance was designed to determine the preferred pacing mode in 10 patients with programmable dual chamber pacemakers who also had angina pectoris. Patients were randomly allocated to one month in each of the following modes: ventricular pacing at 70 beats/min (VVI) or atrioventricular synchronous upper rate 150 beats/min (DDD 150) or 100 beats/min (DDD 100). Medications were unchanged throughout the study; none was taking beta blockers. At the end of each month patients underwent an exercise test. During each month patients recorded symptoms and their preferred pacing mode. DDD 100 was the preferred mode (seven patients). There was significantly less chest pain with this mode than with either of the other modes. There were significantly more episodes of dizziness in VVI, and two patients who developed pacemaker syndrome were unable to complete the pacing period. Three patients developed angina during exercise testing in DDD 150. Atrial synchronous ventricular pacing is better than ventricular pacing for the control of symptoms in patients with angina pectoris provided that the upper atrial tracking rate is limited.

Abstract
Cytogenetic examination was made of 103 13-14-day-old blastocysts and 116 24-32-day-old fetuses from untreated and androstenedione-7-HSA-immunized Merino ewes. There were no differences in the chromosome composition of blastocysts or fetuses from treated or untreated ewes and so the data were combined. At Days 13-14 a 1N/2N mosaic and a 2N - 1/2N/4N mosaic embryo were observed. In addition, 52 of the blastocysts were 2N/4N mosaics, with 8 of these also containing 8N cells, and one blastocyst was a 2N/8N mosaic. No aneuploid fetuses were observed, but 80 of the 116 fetuses contained polyploid cells, including 4N, 6N and 8N cells. The polyploid cells observed in the blastocysts and fetuses should not be considered as abnormal cells as they appear to be a normal part of the developmental processes leading to trophoblast formation and fetal differentiation.

Abstract
A recently described method for isolation of islets of Langerhans from the human pancreas has been adapted to the cynomolgus monkey pancreas. The mean yield of islets obtained from 13 monkey pancreata was 1319 islets per gram of pancreatic tissue (range 533-1800) and the usual purity of the preparation varied from 5 to 15 per cent islet tissue. Twelve cynomolgus monkeys underwent total pancreatectomy, preparation of islets from the excised pancreas and autotransplantation to either the spleen or the liver. Three animals received no transplant and became immediately diabetic, surviving 4-8 days. Four animals became normoglycaemic after intrasplenic islet transplantation, and survived 6 weeks, at which time splenectomy was performed with immediate onset of diabetes. Splenic vein insulin sampling confirmed the spleen as the source of insulin, and histological examination showed implanted islet tissue in all cases. Five animals became normoglycaemic after intrahepatic islet implantation. Three animals subsequently became diabetic at 4 and 5 months and two animals still have functioning grafts, the longest function being 9 months. These results suggest that in the cynomolgus monkey sufficient islets can be extracted from a single donor pancreas to reverse diabetes.

Abstract
In 14 cyclic ewes, the oestrus-associated glycoprotein in the oviducal fluid was never detected between Days 7 and -2 of the oestrous cycle and it was present in 5% of fluid samples collected on Day -1, 59% on Day 0, 96% on Day 1, 100% on Day 2, 79% on Day 3, 31% on Day 4, 16% on Day 5, and 4% on Day 6. Its presence generally coincided with the period of high flow rate of oviducal fluid which occurs around oestrus. The duration of detectable levels of the oestrus-associated glycoprotein did not vary significantly during the breeding season from a mean (+/- s.d.) of 3.9 +/- 1.0 days. However, the peak flow rate of oviducal fluid dropped from 1.63 +/- 0.50 (early) to 1.38 +/- 0.40 (mid-) and to 0.85 +/- 0.21 ml/day late in the season. Anoestrous ewes (3) induced to ovulate by treatment with progesterone implants and gonadotrophin showed low peak fluid flow rates (0.92 +/- 0.30 ml/day) and the presence of the oestrus-associated glycoprotein for a shorter period (2.7 +/- 0.7 days). Pregnancy (N = 3) did not appear to prolong the production of the protein. The injection of 25 micrograms oestradiol benzoate into 3 anoestrous, 2 mid-cycle and 9 ovariectomized ewes caused an increase in fluid flow rate and appearance of the glycoprotein 1-2 days later. The glycoprotein was present for a longer period in response to the exogenous oestrogen--6.8 +/- 1.6 days in the ovariectomized ewes, 7.9 +/- 1.3 days in anoestrous ewes, and 8.4 +/- 0.8 days in the dioestrous ewes.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Head-up tilt, a recognised stimulus to vasovagal syncope, was used to investigate syncope that remained unexplained despite full clinical and electrophysiological assessment in fifteen patients, mean age 65 +/- 10 years, who had had 15 +/- 19 episodes of unexplained syncope over periods of a week to 26 years. After overnight fast systolic blood pressure and heart rate were continuously monitored during 40 degrees head-up tilt for 60 min. Ten control subjects with no history of syncope were studied similarly. In ten patients (67%) and one control vasovagal syncope developed after 29 +/- 19 min (p less than 0.001). In symptomatic patients systolic blood pressure fell from 150 +/- 32 to 56 +/- 9 mm Hg (p less than 0.001) and heart rate from 62 +/- 9 to 38 +/- 12 beats per min (p less than 0.01). In each case symptoms during the test reproduced those previously experienced. No clinical findings predicted development of syncope during tilt. Baseline systolic blood pressure and heart rate did not differ significantly between patients and controls. Pacemakers were implanted in seven patients who have remained symptom-free since implant (follow-up 10 +/- 3 mo).

Abstract
Peroperative retrograde saphenography was used to study 80 incompetent long saphenous veins (LSV) in 60 patients with primary varicose veins. In 53 limbs presentation was uncomplicated (group A, 40 patients); in 27 limbs there was ulceration (group B, 20 patients). All limbs in group B had a normal deep system as shown pre-operatively by ascending and descending venography. Varicose changes were found in 52 (65 per cent) of 80 LSV; the overall mean length of normal vein seen was 16 cm. The incompetent LSV appears unlikely to be suitable for arterial replacement. All valves identified on operative saphenography above the knee appeared incompetent. In only 9 LSV of group B were there recognizable valves either above or below the knee, significantly fewer than 34 of group A (P less than 0.05). This finding suggests that a deficiency of saphenous valves may contribute to the development of venous ulceration. Hunterian perforators of variable size were seen on 70 saphenograms (87 per cent) passing directly from the LSV to the superficial femoral vein. Stripping of the incompetent LSV will disconnect such perforators from an incompetent system and may thus reduce the incidence of both recurrent varicose veins and persistent ulceration.

Abstract
The effect of phosphate on the inhibition by 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzofurazan of the ATPase activity of the proton-translocating ATP synthase in heart submitochondrial particles was investigated. Binding of phosphate protected strongly against the inhibition. A dissociation constant of 0.2 mM was determined for the enzyme X Pi complex and shown to be independent of pH in the range 7.0-8.0. The protective effect of phosphate was mimicked by arsenate but not by sulphate or malonate. Similar results were obtained for the enzyme from Paracoccus denitrificans. 2,4-Dinitrophenol enhanced phosphate binding to the mitochondrial enzyme since the protective effect of phosphate was increased. The data are compatible with protection arising from binding of phosphate to a catalytic site.

Abstract
Dual-chamber pacemakers interact with cardiac rhythms in complex ways. The resultant surface electrocardiograms (ECGs) are often very difficult to interpret. A simple and automatic diagnostic diagram is described that graphically illustrates pacemaker-heart interactions. Pacemaker operation is explained by a continuous series of lines and symbols that interconnect any sequence of paced and sensed events in both chambers. Fixed, programmable, and adaptive pacemaker timing intervals are all shown in a simple format. The pacemaker diagnostic diagram is plotted directly below the ECG to help users interpret the paced cardiac rhythm. The pacemaker diagnostic diagram is generated by software in a pacemaker programmer from: (1) telemetered real-time event markers; (2) fixed and programmable timing parameters (lower rate, AV interval, etc.); (3) pacemaker conditional logic. If this computer analysis of the telemetered event markers is not consistent with normal pacemaker operation, a specific error-message is printed. The pacemaker diagnostic diagram should be useful for instruction, pacemaker follow-up, and troubleshooting.

Abstract
Chromosome counts were obtained from 73 out of 177 (41%) early cleavage-stage Merino embryos. A further 13 embryos were classified as probably diploid. Chromosome aberrations were found in 8 (11%) embryos, one of which was aneuploid and the remainder (9.6%) had euploid abnormalities. If the probable diploid embryos are included, the incidence of euploid aberrations falls to 8.1%. Of the abnormal embryos there was one aneuploid with 2N = 55, two haploids, four haploid/diploid mosaics and one zygote with 4 haploid metaphase plates. Two additional zygotes had 4 interphase pronuclei. Four of the euploid abnormalities were attributable to the entry of two or more spermatozoa and therefore polyspermy is the largest single factor leading to chromosomally aberrant embryos in this population of Merino ewes.

Abstract
A peptide containing an essential tyrosine residue, modified with the nitrobenzofurazan group, has been purified from bovine heart mitochondrial ATPase. The composition of the peptide indicates that this tyrosine is residue 311 in the sequence of a beta chain. The problem of the instability of the tyrosyl-nitrobenzofurazan bond was overcome by working throughout at relatively acidic pH and using pepsin digestion of the enzyme.

Abstract
A tetrapetide containing an essential lysine residue chemically modified with the nitrobenzofurazan group has been purified from bovine heart mitochondrial ATPase. The composition of the peptide indicates that this lysine is residue 401 in the sequence of a beta chain. The modification was achieved by incubation at pH 9 of ATPase that had been previously labelled on a single essential tyrosine residue by reaction of the enzyme with 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzofurazan. The specific transfer of the nitrobenzofurazan group from the tyrosine residue to a particular lysine residue is consistent with the previously demonstrated intramolecular character of this transfer reaction.

Abstract
The effects of active immunization against oestradiol-17 beta on the ovarian response to pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) was investigated in Merino ewes. Immunized (79) and control (41) ewes were synchronized with intravaginal sponges, given either 750 or 1500 i.u. PMSG and then mated to rams or inseminated laparoscopically with fresh diluted semen. All control ewes mated naturally exhibited oestrus and 40 out of 41 control ewes ovulated. The ovulation rate was higher in the controls receiving 1500 i.u. PMSG than in those ewes which received 750 i.u. PMSG (10.2 v. 3.3). Immunization against oestradiol-17 beta resulted in antibody titres varying from 100 to more than 100 000 in plasma taken 1-4 days after mating. The ovarian response increased significantly in the lowest titre group (100-1000) in conjunction with stimulation with 1500 i.u. PMSG. In these ewes the ovulation rate increased over controls (16.7 v. 10.2) as did the total ovarian response, which includes follicles greater than 10 mm diameter (22.3 v. 11.1). The total ovarian response was also increased in those ewes given 750 i.u. PMSG which had titres in the 1000-10 000 and 10 000-100 000 range, but this was not accompanied by significant increases in the ovulation rate. In general, the higher titre levels (greater than 1000) were correlated with decreases in the proportion of ewes showing oestrus and ovulating and in the embryo recovery rate. The 1500 i.u. PMSG treatment group with the highest titres (greater than 10 000) also showed a significant drop in the ovulation rate as compared to the 1500 i.u. PMSG controls.

Abstract
A diagramming system has been developed to assist in interpreting dual chamber pacemaker electrocardiograms. The system is based on the ladder diagram principle but uses two separate ladders, one for the ECG allowing proper representation of atrial A-V and ventricular activation, and a second ladder diagram below it for pacemaker events. The system is applicable to all current single and dual chamber pacing modes and is easy to draw. The ladder diagram allows the logical sequence of timing events to be easily illustrated, and pacemaker malfunction becomes clearly recognizable as a conflict between the ECG events ladder and the pacemaker timing ladder. The system is easy to apply and may eventually prove suitable for automatic generation by computer utilizing sophisticated pacemaker telemetry.
