Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the visual and anatomical results of surgery for macular hole-related retinal detachment (MHRD) after phacoemulsification cataract extraction. METHODS Data for all patients who underwent surgery for MHRD after phacoemulsification cataract extraction from 1 December 1998 to 30 September 2008 in one hospital were evaluated. Patient characteristics, best-corrected visual acuity (VA) preoperatively and at last examination, surgical technique, anatomical success, and follow-up period were extracted and analysed statistically. RESULTS A total of 13 625 eyes of 10 076 patients who had phacoemulsification cataract surgery were included. In the follow-up period, 10 cases of MHRD in nine patients were observed, of which seven eyes had high myopia. The mean axial length was 30.97 ± 1.36 mm (29.19, 32.97) and mean myopia was-19.35 ± 1.93 (-7.5,-3.5) dioptres. Overall anatomical success was achieved in 90% (9 out of 10 eyes). There was no statistically significant difference (P=0.240) between the logarithm of the MAR VA before the phacoemulsification cataract extraction and after MHRD surgical repair. VA increased in three eyes but decreased in the other seven after MHRD surgery. CONCLUSIONS As a primary procedure, vitreous surgery combined with other necessary adjunct procedures such as membrane peeling and retinal tamponade seems to be successful in achieving anatomical success. However, VA improvement is dependent on the type of macular lesion and not the surgical procedure.

Abstract
It has been suggested that a sequence in the RNA transcript that can form a stem and loop structure, followed by the sequence CAAUCAA, is the signal for rho-dependent transcription termination. We tested this hypothesis by synthesizing a DNA duplex whose sequence corresponds to a region of the lambda tR1 terminator that contains these structural features. We cloned this synthetic DNA fragment under the control of the lacUV5 promoter, and showed that it does not cause rho-dependent termination in vitro. RNA polymerase pauses during in vitro transcription across the synthetic sequence, although less efficiently than at the corresponding sequence on the lambda template. No rho-mediated termination was detected even under conditions that prolonged transcriptional pausing at the synthetic site, indicating that the synthetic sequence is defective as a transcript release site. We suggest that unlike rho-independent terminators, rho-dependent terminators require sequences in addition to those immediately before the sites of termination.

Abstract
Intracellular polyamine pools are partially maintained by an active transport apparatus that is specific for and regulated by polyamines. Although mammalian transport activity has been characterized by kinetic studies, the actual protein itself has yet to be identified, purified, or cloned. As one approach to this problem, we attempted photoaffinity labeling of plasma membrane proteins using two specifically designed and synthesized polyamine conjugates as photoprobes. The first is a spermidine conjugate bearing the photoreactive moiety 4-azidosalicylic acid at the N4 position via an alkyl linkage, and the second is a norspermine conjugate with 4-azidosalicylic acid at the N4 position via an acyl linkage. Labeling of murine L1210 lymphocytic leukemia cells was carried out at 4 degrees C to promote selective alkylation of cell surface proteins. Separation of plasma membrane proteins from cells cross-linked with the N4-spermidine conjugate by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed two heavily labeled proteins at approximately 118 and approximately 50 kDa (designated p118 and p50, respectively). Band p118 was more well defined and much more intensely labeled. Analogous proteins were also observed in human U937 lymphoma cells. Specificity of labeling was strongly suggested by competition with polyamines and analogs during labeling and further indicated by the nearly identical labeling of the same protein by the N1-norspermine photoprobe but not by the unconjugated photoreagent. Neuraminidase pretreatment of L1210 cells increased mobility of the p118, suggesting that it was glycosylated and, thus, of plasma membrane origin. In transport-deficient L1210 cells, p118 and p50 were found to have a slightly higher molecular mass and were accompanied by a less distinct protein band (approximately 100 kDa). These findings indicate the presence of a polyamine binding protein at the surface of murine and human leukemia cells, which could be directly or indirectly related to the polyamine transport apparatus.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the accuracy of high-pitch prospectively electrocardiogram (ECG)-triggering low-dose, dual-source computed tomography (CT) coronary angiography for assessing coronary artery stenosis compared with conventional coronary angiography. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and three patients undergoing high-pitch CT coronary angiography (CTCA) and conventional coronary angiography (CCA) within 30 days were enrolled. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of high-pitch CTCA for detecting >50 and >70% stenosis were evaluated using CCA as the reference standard on a per-segment, per-vessel, and per-patient basis. Two experienced radiologists independently rated high-pitch CTCA images for quality using a four-point scale (1 = excellent, 4 = non-diagnostic) on a per-segment basis. The effective dose was calculated by multiplying the conversion coefficient of 0.028 by the dose-length product. RESULTS The mean heart rate of patients was 57 ± 6 beats/min. For detecting >50% stenosis, the sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV of high-pitch CTCA were 89, 97, 87, and 97% on a per-segment basis; 91, 92, 92, and 91% on a per-vessel basis; and 99, 85, 96, and 94% on a per-patient basis. For detecting >70% stenosis, the sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV of high-pitch CTCA were 96, 98, 90, and 99% on a per-segment basis. Coronary segments were rated as diagnostic in 98.6% (1355/1375) of cases (score 1, 72.5%; score 2, 23.1%; score 3, 3%; score 4, 1.4%). The effective dose of high-pitch CTCA was 1.51 ± 0.31 mSv. CONCLUSION High-pitch prospectively ECG-triggering dual-source CTCA provides good image quality and high diagnostic accuracy with a 1.51 mSv radiation dose.

Abstract
A simple, precise, stability-indicating reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic method for norfloxacin glutamate and norfloxacin glucuronate in liquid and solid dosage forms is described. Chloronitrodiazepine was used as the internal standard. The eluent used with a C18 bonded phase column was methanol-water-diethylamine (50:50:0.4, v/v/v) (pH* 5.5). The effects of the eluent pH*, the ratio of methanol to water, and the quantity of diethylamine on the retention times of the sample and internal standard were investigated. The method showed good linearity in the range 1-45 micrograms ml-1 for norfloxacin. Solid samples were ground, dissolved in the eluent, filtered, and then determined by this method. Liquid samples were dissolved in the same solvent. The average recoveries of norfloxacin glutamate and norfloxacin glucuronate in their simulated preparations were 99.5% for solid products and 99.8% for liquid products. The method was applied to the study of the thermal stability of the drugs by following the degradation of norfloxacin glutamate and glucuronate in the four products in accelerated tests at 37-80 degrees C for up to 3 months. Shelf-lives at 25 degrees C of the four products were predicted from the results assuming zero- and first-order kinetics of decomposition, and were at least 1.5 years for liquid products and 2 years for solid products.

Abstract
Drosophila melanogaster contains two genes encoding glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, Gapdh-1 and Gapdh-2. The two genes are highly conserved in their coding sequences but not in their noncoding and flanking sequences. We report that both genes are expressed at higher levels in larval, late pupal, and adult stages than in embryonic, early, and midpupal stages. However, a major difference in the expression of the two genes is observed in the adult stage, during which the level of the Gapdh-1 transcript decreases over fourfold, while that of the Gapdh-2 transcript remains at a constant high level. In addition, the Gapdh-1 transcript appears highly enriched in the thorax section compared with the head and abdomen sections, while the Gapdh-2 transcript is evenly distributed. Analyses of the expression patterns of the two Gapdh hybrid genes, GAP1/2 and GAP2/1, revealed that the two genes have a distinct organization of their regulatory sequences. The principle regulatory sequences of Gapdh-2 reside upstream of the translation start, while the principle sequences specifying the level and developmental pattern of Gapdh-1 expression reside downstream of the translation start.

Abstract
Phorbol ester is a strong inducer for both cell cornification and squamous-cell marker SPRR1 gene expression in conducting airway epithelial cells. However, the signaling pathways involved in the regulation of both events have not been completely elucidated. The current study focuses on the common and divergent pathways involved in the induction of these two activities by phorbol-13-myristate-12-acetate (PMA). Using a protein kinase (PK) C inhibitor, bisindolylmaleimide I, PMA-induced cell cornification and SPRR1 gene expression were abolished. Further, a PKC activator, indolactam V, induced cell cornification in the absence of PMA treatment. These results suggest a PKC-dependent signaling pathway for both gene induction and enhanced cell cornification by PMA. However, a mitogen-activated protein kinase-specific inhibitor, PD98059, could only block the gene induction event but failed to prevent cell cornification induced by PMA. These results suggest that diverse signaling pathways after PKC activation by PMA are involved in the regulation of these two events.

Abstract
The construction of two new derivatives of the bacteriophage cloning vector M13mp2 is described. One derivative, mWJ22, contains a new HindIII site while the other, mWJ43, contains a new BamHI site. These new sites were both introduced at the EcoRI site at amino acid five of the 145 amino acid-long fragment of Escherichia coli beta-galactosidase within the phage. The new restriction sites do not disrupt the blue color detection system of M13mp2; therefore insertion of cloned fragments results in colorless plaques on indicator plates for the new derivatives.

Abstract
Phosphoglycosylation catalyzed by UDP-GlcNAc:Ser-protein N-acetylglucosamine-1-phosphotransferase (Ser:GlcNAc phosphotransferase) adds GlcNAcalpha-1-P to peptidyl-Ser of selected Dictyostelium discoideum proteins. Lysosomal cysteine proteinase (CP), proteinase-1(CP7), is the major phosphoglycosylated protein in bacterially grown amoebae. GlcNAc-1-P is added within a Ser-rich domain containing SSS, SGSG, or SGSQ repeated motifs that are not found in other papain-like CPs. We studied the substrate specificity of the transferase using peptides containing these motifs and 12 other peptides with one or more Ser residues. Phosphoglycosylation is comparable for all three Dictyostelium CP motifs, but it is not restricted to them. Flanking residues in the other peptides strongly influence phosphoglycosylation efficiency. Dictyostelium microsomal membranes also phosphoglycosylate endogenous acceptors, and some of these acceptors occur as an 18 S complex with the transferase. CP-serine motif peptides inhibit endogenous acceptor phosphoglycosylation weakly (30-40%) at 800 microM, whereas catalytically inactive proteinase-1(CP7) and other non-phosphoglycosylated eukaryotic CPs, lacking the serine domain, inhibit transferase activity at 1-4 microM. SDS denaturation destroys the inhibitory potential of all CPs showing that transferase recognizes a conformation-dependent feature that is shared by all. Proteinase-1(CP7) expressed in Escherichia coli lacks GlcNAc-1-P, but it is a substrate for Ser:GlcNAc phosphotransferase, Km = 5.6 microM. Thus, Ser:GlcNAc phosphotransferase recognizes both acceptor peptide sequences and a conformational feature of eukaryotic CPs. This may be physiologically important for establishing or maintaining non-overlapping groups of GlcNAc-1-P- and Man-6-P-modified Dictyostelium proteins that reside in functionally distinct endo-lysosomal vesicles.

Abstract
Increased serum levels of mucin-associated antigen have been previously demonstrated in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and interstitial pneumonia, and in lung-transplant recipients. The present study assessed the serum airway mucin levels in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method with a human-airway-mucin-specific monoclonal antibody (17Q2) was used to measure serum mucin levels in normal subjects, chronic smokers, patients with chronic bronchitis and other pulmonary diseases, patients with acute cardiogenic lung edema, and patients with ARDS. The serum mucin levels measured 9.9 +/- 0.8 ng/ml (mean +/- SEM, n = 59) in normal subjects, 12.7 +/- 1.6 ng/ml (n = 29) in chronic smokers, 21.8 +/- 1.9 ng/ml (n = 28) in patients with chronic bronchitis and other pulmonary diseases, 9.0 +/- 3.1 ng/ml (n = 5) in patients with acute cardiogenic lung edema. The serum mucin level was 53.8 +/- 6.6 ng/ml (n = 13) in patients with ARDS (p < 0.05, as compared with the four other groups). Serial measurements of serum mucin levels were obtained in patients with ARDS. Statistical analysis showed an inverse correlation of serial measurements of serum mucin with static respiratory-system compliance (p = 0.021), an inverse correlation of sequential serum mucin levels and log(Pa(O2)/Fl(O2)) (p = 0.016), and a positive correlation of sequential serum mucin levels and lung injury score (LIS) (p = 0.019). Gel-filtration analysis showed that mucin-associated antigens in ARDS sera were polydispersed and smaller than the antigens in normal sera. This study indicates that an increasing amount of degraded mucin occurs in patients with ARDS.

Abstract
A simple method has recently become available for sequence analysis of large oligonucleotide fragments. Sequences are derived from the characteristic mobility shifts of the sequential partial degradation products of the oligonucleotide on two dimensional homochromatography. We have now developed an empirical formula for predicting the relative mobilities of each of the partial products in the first dimension (electrophoresis on cellulose acetate gel). The formula allows a more precise interpretation of the sequence of the oligonucleotide. It eliminates the ambiguities present in the method previously reported for sequence analysis by simple inspection of the mobility shifts. In order to amplify the mobility shifts so that they may be more easily and accurately measured, methods have been developed for preparing and fractionating the oligonucleotides on 40 x 40 cm DEAE-cellulose plates. Both improvements have proven valuable for direct sequence analysis by mapping.

Abstract
The sequences of RNA-3 and RNA-4 of rice hoja blanca tenuivirus isolates from Colombia and from Costa Rica were determined and analyzed. These isolates were 98.9% and 98.6% identical in the coding and non-coding regions of RNA-3, and 96.9 and 91.5% identical in the coding and non-coding regions of RNA-4, and are therefore strains of the same virus. There is about three times as much variation between isolates (based on consensus sequences) as there is within isolates (based on sequences of individual clones). There is also considerably more variation for RNA-4 (both between and within isolates) than there is for RNA-3, even though between tenivirus species RNA-3 has diverged more than RNA-4, implying that the evolution of the tenuivirus RNAs is not necessarily dependent on the amount of variation found for these RNAs.

Abstract
A study was performed to compare the ONLINE and EMIT II immunoassays with gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric (GC/MS) analysis of methaqualone metabolites on urine using samples obtained from a clinical study. Urine was collected over a 72 h period from six healthy adults (4 male, 2 female) after oral dosing with 200 mg methaqualone (MTQ). Each urine sample was analyzed by ONLINE and EMIT II. The samples were then analyzed by GC/MS, hydrolyzed with beta-glucuronidase and again analyzed by GC/MS. Both immunoassays showed greater than 600 ng/ml concentrations of drug in each sample by the second void and remained highly positive for the rest of the 72 h. Unhydrolyzed samples analyzed by GC/MS showed both low concentrations of MTQ as well as its five major hydroxylated metabolites. The hydrolyzed samples analyzed by GC/MS showed high concentrations of the hydroxylated metabolites with the 2'-hydroxy and 3'-hydroxy metabolites being present at the highest concentrations, the 4'-hydroxy metabolite at a lower amount and the 6-hydroxy and 2-hydroxy metabolites at the lowest concentrations. The GC/MS data coupled with the antibody cross-reactivity data indicate that the major species in clinical samples that cross-react in both immunoassays are the conjugated forms of the hydroxylated metabolites of MTQ. Therefore when confirming by GC/MS after an immunoassay screen it would be prudent to confirm for the major hydroxylated metabolites as glucuronides of MTQ instead of the parent drug.

Abstract
In the brain, the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) level is primarily controlled by the activity of its synthesizing enzyme, L-glutamate decarboxylase (GAD). At present, mechanisms responsible for regulation of GAD activity remain largely unknown. Here we report that GAD activity is inhibited by conditions favoring protein phosphorylation, and this inhibition can be reversed by phosphatase treatment. Furthermore, this inhibition appears to result from the suppression of a Ca(2+)-dependent phosphatase. Phosphorylation of GAD is demonstrated by direct incorporation of (32)P into the GAD protein. These results suggest that GAD activity in the brain is inhibited by phosphorylation and activated by dephosphorylation. Abstract
BACKGROUND The risks for infants and young children receiving inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) therapy are largely unknown. Recent clinical studies indicate that ICS therapy in pre-school children with symptoms of asthma result in decreased symptoms without influencing the clinical disease course, but potentially affect postnatal growth and development. The current study employs a primate experimental model to identify the risks posed by ICS therapy. OBJECTIVE To (1) establish whether ICS therapy in developing primate lungs reverses pulmonary pathobiology associated with allergic airway disease (AAD) and (2) define the impact of ICS on postnatal lung growth and development in primates. METHODS Infant rhesus monkeys were exposed, from 1 through 6 months, to filtered air (FA) with house dust mite allergen and ozone using a protocol that produces AAD (AAD monkeys), or to FA alone (Control monkeys). From three through 6 months, the monkeys were treated daily with ICS (budesonide) or saline. RESULTS Several AAD manifestations (airflow restrictions, lavage eosinophilia, basement membrane zone thickening, epithelial mucin composition) were reduced with ICS treatment, without adverse effects on body growth or adrenal function; however, airway branching abnormalities and intraepithelial innervation were not reduced. In addition, several indicators of postnatal lung growth and differentiation: vital capacity, inspiratory capacity, compliance, non-parenchymal lung volume and alveolarization, were increased in both AAD and Control monkeys that received ICS treatment. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Incomplete prevention of pathobiological changes in the airways and disruption of postnatal growth and differentiation of airways and lung parenchyma in response to ICS pose risks for developing primate lungs. These responses also represent two mechanisms that could compromise ICS therapy's ability to alter clinical disease course in young children.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate, in vitro, the influence of non-penetrating glaucoma surgery (NPGS) and the influence of tightly suturing the superficial scleral flap on the aqueous outflow facility of isolated porcine eyes. MATERIALS AND METHODS The anterior chambers of 12 enucleated porcine cadaver eyes were cannulated and perfused. NPGS was performed by the same surgeon. The overall ocular aqueous outflow facilities were assessed before and after the surgical interventions of NPGS, as well as after scleral flap closure. RESULTS The mean (SD) aqueous outflow facility, which was 0.164 (0.014) microl/min/mm Hg before surgery, increased significantly after NPGS to 1.584 (0.217) microl/min/mm Hg, p<0.001. When the superficial flap was closed, the aqueous outflow facility significantly decreased (0.754 (0.107) microl/min/mm Hg, p<0.001) but remained significantly higher than preoperatively (p<0.01). After suturing the superficial flap, the overall resistance increased to 1.625 (0.210) microl/min/mm Hg. The difference in the resistance to outflow before and after flap closure was 0.848 (0.169) microl/min/mm Hg. CONCLUSION After NPGS suturing the scleral flap can modulate aqueous outflow resistance. The experimental set up described might provide an efficient model for the technical training of glaucoma surgeries.

Abstract
Protein expression of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) was studied in gastric carcinoma patients in relation to clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis. Fifty-four samples of gastric carcinoma tissue and 15 samples of adjacent normal gastric mucosal tissue were examined immunohistochemically. Expression rates of VEGF-A (66.7%) and MMP-9 (63.0%) in carcinoma tissue were significantly higher than in normal tissue (6.7% for both proteins). VEGF-A and MMP9 expression was associated with tumour size, invasion depth, lymph node metastasis, degree of histological differentiation and pathological stage, but not age or sex. VEGF-A expression was positively correlated with that of MMP-9. Expression of VEGF-A and MMP-9 were each inversely correlated with 5-year survival. VEGF-A and MMP-9 were overexpressed in tumours compared with normal tissue; they may act together to increase carcinogenesis and the progression, invasion and metastasis of gastric carcinoma, and could be used as biomarkers for the prognosis of gastric carcinoma.

Abstract
Analysis of the sequence of the 2336 nucleotide RNA-3 of Echinochloa hoja blanca tenuivirus shows that it is closely related to RNA-3 of rice hoja blanca tenuivirus, the principal virus disease of rice in Latin America. This is especially true for the coding regions, where the viruses are almost 90% similar. However, the non-coding regions of RNA-3 of these viruses, principally the intergenic region separating the two ambisense open reading frames, are only about 50% similar, suggesting that these are distinct viruses. The results closely resemble those obtained for the analysis of RNA-4 of these viruses, both in the absolute and relative percentage similarities of the coding and non-coding regions. This implies a coordinated evolution of the different tenuivirus RNA segments. The features of the RNA and the comparisons with the sequences of RNA-3 of RHBV, rice stripe virus (RStV) and maize stripe virus (MStV) are discussed.

Abstract
Oxidized low density lipoproteins (oxLDL) stimulated human blood T cells to a specific cytotoxic response with autologous PHA activated blood mononuclear cells which had been pre-incubated with oxLDL. The cytotoxic reaction was exerted by CD8+ enriched cells but not by CD4+ enriched cells. Allogeneic target cells from HLA mismatched donors were not damaged and the reaction was consistently inhibited by monoclonal antibody against HLA class I. Antigen-specific cytotoxic T cells might contribute to lysis of cells in the atherosclerotic plaque that have taken up oxLDL and thus participate in the inflammatory process associated with atherosclerosis.

Abstract
To study the expression and regulation of a rice glycine-rich cell wall protein gene, Osgrp1, transgenic rice plants were regenerated that contain the Osgrp1 promoter or its 5' deletions fused with the bacterial beta-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene. We report here a detailed histochemical analysis of the Osgrp1-Gus expression patterns in transgenic rice plants. In roots of transgenic rice plants, GUS expression was specifically located in cell elongation and differentiation regions, and no GUS expression was detectable in the apical meristem and the mature region. In shoots, GUS activity was expressed only in young leaves or in the growing basal parts of developing leaves, and little GUS activity was expressed in mature leaves or mature parts of developing leaves. In shoot apices, GUS activity was detected only in those leaf cells which were starting to expand and differentiate, and GUS expression was not detected in the apical meristem and the young meristematic leaf primordia. GUS activity was highly expressed in the young stem tissue, particularly in the developing vascular bundles and epidermis. Thus, the expression of the Osgrp1 gene is closely associated with cell elongation/expansion during the post-mitotic cell differentiation process. The Osgrp1-Gus gene was also expressed in response to wounding and down-regulated by water-stress conditions in the elongation region of roots. Promoter deletion analysis indicates that both positive and negative mechanisms are involved in regulating the specific expression patterns. We propose a simple model for the developmental regulation of the Osgrp1 gene expression.

Abstract
AIM To assess the potential of texture analysis (TA) applied in T1 maps and extracellular volume (ECV) obtained using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) in the diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and hypertensive heart disease (HHD) compared with normal controls (NC). Strain parameters were analysed to compare with final TA models. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study included 66 HCM patients, 39 HHD patients, and 41 NC. Step-wise dimension reduction and feature selection were performed by reproducibility, machine learning, collinearity, and multivariable regression analysis to select the texture features that enable diagnosis of and differentiation between HCM and HHD. Strain parameters were calculated by short-axis and three long-axis cine sequences. RESULTS Independent features in T1 maps and ECV analysis allowed for the differentiation between patients (HCM and HHD) and NC. Of the best-calculated model, the areas under the receiver operating curve (AUCs) were as follows: 0.969 for T1 map and 0.964 for ECV. To distinguish HCM from HHD, two independent features were screened out for both T1 and ECV maps. The AUCs were as follows: 0.793 for T1 map and 0.894 for ECV. Radial, circumferential, and longitudinal strain parameters could differentiate patients from NC, but only longitudinal strain parameters was significantly different between HCM and HHD. CONCLUSIONS Texture analysis of T1 maps and ECV shows high accuracy in differentiating hypertrophic myocardium from NC, and HCM from HHD. Strain parameters are able to demonstrate the difference between patients and NC, but were less impressive in differentiating HCM and HHD.

Abstract
We sought to determine if failure to thrive in pediatric patients with the human immunodeficiency virus could be explained based on endocrine dysfunction. Fourteen human immunodeficiency virus-infected pediatric patients, all of whom had adequate nutritional status, underwent endocrine evaluation. Growth hormone and cortisol responses to glucagon stimulation were adequate. Despite this, eight of the 12 subjects had low somatomedin C levels. Although all patients were clinically and biochemically euthyroid, 36% (5/14) demonstrated elevated baseline and peak thyrotropin levels in response to thyroid releasing hormone, suggesting a state of compensated hypothyroidism. Although the importance of these findings is unclear, it is possible that subtle alterations of thyroid regulation may contribute to failure to thrive in some pediatric patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus and may represent a potentially correctable defect.
