Abstract
Malignant melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer and its incidence has doubled in the last two decades. It represents only 4% of skin cancer cases per year, but causes as many as 74% of skin cancer deaths. Early detection of malignant melanoma is associated with survival rates of up to 90%, but later detection (stage III to stage IV) is associated with survival rates of only 10%. Dysregulation of microRNA (miRNA) expression has been linked to tumor development and progression by functioning either as a tumor suppressor, an oncogene or a metastasis regulator in multiple cancer types. To understand the role of miRNA in the pathogenesis of malignant melanoma and identify biomarkers of metastasis, miRNA expression profiles in skin punches from 33 metastatic melanoma patients and 14 normal healthy donors were compared. We identified a cluster of 14 miRNAs on the X chromosome, termed the miR-506-514 cluster, which was consistently overexpressed in nearly all melanomas tested (30-60 fold, P<0.001), regardless of mutations in N-ras or B-raf. Inhibition of the expression of this cluster as a whole, or one of its sub-clusters (Sub-cluster A) consisting of six mature miRNAs, led to significant inhibition of cell growth, induction of apoptosis, decreased invasiveness and decreased colony formation in soft agar across multiple melanoma cell lines. Sub-cluster A of the miR-506-514 cluster was critical for maintaining the cancer phenotype, but the overexpression of the full cluster was necessary for melanocyte transformation. Our results provide new insights into the functional role of this miRNA cluster in melanoma, and suggest new approaches to treat or diagnose this disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the procedural feasibility and safety of carotid angioplasty and stent placement of carotid artery dissection (CAD) patients who had failed antithrombotic therapy in acute dissection. METHODS A series of 33 consecutive patients (mean age, 40.21 years; 29 men and 4 women) who underwent angioplasty and stent placement for symptomatic carotid artery dissection (sCAD) from May 2005 to December 2010 in the Nanjing Stroke Registry Program (NSRP) was retrospectively reviewed. All the included patients had been diagnosed definitively based on catheter angiography, and had failed to respond to medical therapy during the course of initial hospital admission. The baseline and followed up data of these patients were collected and analyzed. RESULTS Of all the 33 included patients, 32 patients had achieved technical success without any intraoperative complications. Two patients manifested ipsilateral Horner sign on the next day after stenting, and one of them suffered from recurrence of transient ischaemic attack (TIA) during the course of follow up, but completely remission via antithrombotic therapy. CONCLUSION Endovascular stenting is a feasible and safe therapeutic strategy of CAD patients who have failed medical therapy.

Abstract
We examine the exponentiation of the Raman forward scattering instability in modulated plasma channels computationally and analytically. An evolution equation for the complex phases of the Raman scattered waves treating the spatial localization and discrete nature of the channel modes is derived. Simulations with WAKE [P. Mora and T. M. Antonsen Jr., Phys. Plasmas 4, 217 (1997)] verify the theory in the linear growth regime and provide insight into the nonlinear stage of the instability when cascading and pump depletion play a role. We find that the exponentiation in modulated channels depends on two factors: the increase in coupling due to the increased plasma wavenumber in the high-density regions of the channel and a decreased coupling due to the reduced longitudinal spatial coherence. For the parameters considered, simulations show that the finite extent of the pump pulse is more significant in determining the exponentiation than phase mixing due to the transverse variation of the channel. Both the theory and simulations confirm that modulated channels allow for the stable guiding of longer pulses than nonmodulated channels.

Abstract
Brother of CDO (BOC) is a cell surface receptor that derives its name from the structurally related protein, cell adhesion molecule-related/down-regulated by oncogenes (CDO, sometimes CDON). High levels of BOC mRNA and protein expression have been described in embryonic tissues with active cell proliferation and ongoing cellular differentiation(1,2). A microarray-based screen of RNA isolated from 11 different adult equine tissues unexpectedly identified BOC as having an expression pattern restricted to articular cartilage. The objective of this study was to further investigate BOC expression in adult articular cartilage relative to other tissues. Both RT-qPCR and mRNA sequencing confirmed the microarray data. Steady state BOC mRNA levels in articular cartilage were substantially higher than in the other adult tissues tested, neonatal tendon, placenta, and whole embryo. The expression of BOC displayed a pattern of tissue specificity comparable to well established cartilage matrix protein biomarkers. BOC mRNA levels in articular cartilage increased with age, but were rapidly down-regulated when chondrocytes were enzymatically isolated from the cartilage matrix and expanded in monolayer culture. Relative expression patterns of CDO were broadly similar, but displayed lower fold change differences. A functional role in articular cartilage that involves Hedgehog signaling is suggested by the known binding affinity of BOC for all three Hedgehog ligands. These data also extend BOC and CDO biology to a post-mitotic and highly differentiated cell type within a mature tissue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To demonstrate the morphological characteristics of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) by using in vivo laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM). DESIGN Descriptive analysis of VKC by LSCM performed in EENT Hospital of Fudan University. PARTICIPANTS 26 patients diagnosed as VKC and 26 age-matched healthy controls were enrolled in the study. METHODS The HRTII/RCM was used to examine bulbar conjunctiva, tarsal conjunctiva, superior limbus and inferior limbus. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The density of Langerhans cells and inflammatory cells in tarsal and bulbar conjunctiva were calculated. The morphology of Vogt Palisades was analysed and normal rate of Vogt Palisades at superior and inferior limbus was calculated, respectively. RESULTS Infiltration of a larger number of Langerhans cells and inflammatory cells could be identified in both bulbar conjunctiva and tarsal conjunctiva compared with normal subjects. Furthermore, the density of Langerhans cells in tarsal conjunctiva was significantly higher in tarsal form and mix form than that in bulbar form (P = 0.048). Normal Vogt Palisades were visible only in 15 and 23 eyes at superior and inferior limbus respectively. Abnormal Vogt Palisades were characterized by atrophy or absence of stromal papillae and disappearance of bright basal cells, accompanied with the infiltration of more Langerhans cells. At superior limbal area, bulbar form had the highest abnormal rate, followed by mix form, both were significantly higher than tarsal form (P = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS The in vivo morphological characteristics of conjunctiva and limbus in VKC included the infiltration of Langerhans cells and inflammatory cells in epithelium and stroma, and the destruction of Vogt Palisades.

Abstract
ABSTRACTA variety of carbon nanotube films have been fabricated and tested as cold cathodes. A spray deposition technique was developed for processing as-grown bulk nanotubes, both single-walled and multi-walled, into films of randomly oriented nanotubes. Films of randomly oriented multi-walled nanotubes were grown using thermal chemical vapor deposition, and arrays of well-aligned multi-walled nanotubes have been fabricated using a microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique. The emission current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of these nanotube cathodes have been measured. Both multi-walled (random and aligned) and single-walled carbon nanotubes exhibit low turn-on fields (∼ 2 V/μm to generate 1 nA) and threshold fields (< 5 V/μm to generate 10 mA/cm2). Significantly, these cathodes were capable of operation at very large current densities (> 1A/cm2), making them candidates for application in a variety of vacuum microelectronic devices.

Abstract
This study reports comparative evaluations of sugar and ethanol production from a native aspen (Populus tremuloides) between sulfite pretreatment to overcome recalcitrance of lignocellulose (SPORL) and dilute acid (DA) pretreatments. All aqueous pretreatments were carried out in a laboratory wood pulping digester using wood chips at 170°C with a liquid to oven dry (od) wood ratio (L/W) of 3:1 at two levels of acid charge on wood of 0.56 and 1.11%. Sodium bisulfite charge on od wood was 0 for DA and 1.5 or 3.0% for SPORL. All substrates produced by both pretreatments (except DA with pretreatment duration of 0) had good enzymatic digestibility of over 80%. However, SPORL produced higher enzymatic digestibility than its corresponding DA pretreatment for all the experiments conducted. As a result, SPORL produced higher ethanol yield from simultaneous saccharification and fermentation of cellulosic substrate than its corresponding DA pretreatment. SPORL was more effective than its corresponding DA pretreatment in reducing energy consumption for postpretreatment wood chip size-reduction. SPORL, with lower energy input and higher sugar and ethanol yield, produced higher sugar and ethanol production energy efficiencies than the corresponding DA pretreatment.

Abstract
Oxygen is known to be released from plant roots, but has seldom been quantified for wetland plants. Our study aims to quantify oxygen release from the roots of one wetland species in China, and use this knowledge as a basis for future modeling. We measured diurnal fluctuations in oxygen release from the roots of Acorus calamus Linn in a modeled constructed wetland (CW) using a titanium ([image omitted]) citrate buffer. Oxygen release was monitored every two hours. Maximum oxygen release was recorded in the range of 215.2-750.8 μmolg(-1)h(-1) and occurred around 15:00. The maximum value of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was in the range of 1281.8-1712.0 mmolm(-2)s(-1) and occurred around 13:00. Both the oxygen release rate and PAR were found to approach zero at night. Our results indicate that oxygen release depends largely on light intensity and exhibits a diurnal periodicity with release occurring only during daytime. Rate of root oxygen release varied during the daytime and this temporal variation was well described by the Gaussian function. While further validation is needed, we suggest that the Gaussian function may be used as the basis for modeling root oxygen release in natural and constructed wetlands.

Abstract
Cryogenic and high-temperature systems often require compact heat exchangers with a high resistance to axial conduction in order to control the heat transfer induced by axial temperature differences. One attractive design for such applications is a perforated plate heat exchanger that utilizes high conductivity perforated plates to provide the stream-to-stream heat transfer and low conductivity spacers to prevent axial conduction between the perforated plates. This paper presents a numerical model of a perforated plate heat exchanger that accounts for axial conduction, external parasitic heat loads, variable fluid and material properties, and conduction to and from the ends of the heat exchanger. The numerical model is validated by experimentally testing several perforated plate heat exchangers that are fabricated using microelectromechanical systems based manufacturing methods. This type of heat exchanger was investigated for potential use in a cryosurgical probe. One of these heat exchangers included perforated plates with integrated platinum resistance thermometers. These plates provided in situ measurements of the internal temperature distribution in addition to the temperature, pressure, and flow rate measured at the inlet and exit ports of the device. The platinum wires were deposited between the fluid passages on the perforated plate and are used to measure the temperature at the interface between the wall material and the flowing fluid. The experimental testing demonstrates the ability of the numerical model to accurately predict both the overall performance and the internal temperature distribution of perforated plate heat exchangers over a range of geometry and operating conditions. The parameters that were varied include the axial length, temperature range, mass flow rate, and working fluid.

Abstract
PURPOSE To observe morphologic changes and the distribution of dendritic cells in pterygium using in vivo laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM). DESIGN Prospective comparative study. METHODS Twenty-six eyes of 26 patients with pterygium and 17 eyes of 17 healthy subjects were recruited. Using LSCM, in vivo images of the pterygium and adjacent clear cornea were captured. The density of basal corneal epithelial cells and keratocytes in the anterior and posterior stroma and the density of dendritic cells in the pterygium and adjacent clear cornea were determined. In the controls, the central cornea and nasal bulbar conjunctiva were imaged. The density of basal corneal epithelial cells, keratocytes, and dendritic cells was evaluated. RESULTS Morphologic alterations of the sub-basal nerve plexus were observed in pterygium. The density of basal corneal epithelial cells and anterior keratocytes in pterygium was 5359.0 ± 543.1 cells/mm² and 407.4 ± 188.7 cells/mm² respectively, which was significantly lower than that in the controls (P < .001). The density of dendritic cells in the clear corneas of pterygia was 60.3 ± 25.5 cells/mm², which was significantly higher than the 23.6 ± 11.1 cells/mm² in the central corneas of controls (P < .001). The dendritic cell density in the pterygium was significantly higher than the density in the nasal bulbar conjunctiva of controls (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Histopathologic alterations and increased dendritic cells were evident in pterygium and the adjacent clear cornea by in vivo LSCM. In vivo LSCM was found to be an effective method of observing the morphologic alterations of pterygium.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Graves' disease (GD) is a common autoimmune disorder with genetic predisposition. There is strong evidence that the Chr.5q31-33 region, which contains the immune response cytokine genes [interleukin (IL)-3, IL-4, IL-5, IL-9, and IL-13], is linked to autoimmune thyroid disorders in Chinese and Japanese populations. The aim of the present study is to elucidate whether the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) and the interaction of variants in the 5 genes are associated with the development of GD and Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO). MATERIALS AND METHODS GD patients (no.=751), with 190 of GO patients and healthy control subjects (no.=748) were included in this study. Six SNP [rs40401 (IL-3), rs2070874 (IL-4), rs2069812 (IL-5), rs1859430 (IL-9), rs2069868 (IL-9), and rs20541 (IL-13)] were genotyped by SNPstream Genotyping System. RESULTS There was a significant increase of C allele of rs40401 in GD [odds ratio (OR)=1.18 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02-1.36], pallele=0.028] and GO [OR=1.30 (95%CI: 1.04-1.63), pallele=0.022] patients compared with those in the controls. The C allele of the rs2069812 was also significantly associated with GD [OR=1.22 (95%CI: 1.04-1.44), pallele=0.015] and GO [OR=1.45 (95%CI: 1.13-1.86), pallele=0.003] patients. Haplotype analysis showed a predominant increase of the 2 SNP (rs40401-rs2069812, CC) and all the 6 SNP (CCCCCC) haplotype in GD (OR=1.70, OR=3.70, respectively) and even stronger in GO (OR=2.18, OR=7.01, respectively) patients. CONCLUSIONS The results suggested that the polymorphism of IL-3 (rs40401) and IL-5 (rs2069812) were associated with GD and GO susceptibility in Chinese population. The interaction of 6-locus from the 5 genes might confer higher risk for GD and GO than single risk allele.

Abstract
A conceptual model has been developed by using the parameter of influent suspended solids (SS) concentration to estimate the clogging time in constructed wetlands (CWs). The depth of the clogging layer is estimated through the effective porosity vertically along the CWs. The basis of the model to predict the clogging time lies in the fact that, when clogging occurs, the pore spaces were reduced and thus the infiltration rate was reduced. A group of laboratory scale CWs was employed to develop the model and validate its utilization. Good agreement between the experimental data and the predicted clogging time was obtained. This indicates that the model can be used in different operation conditions for estimating clogging time in CWs.

Abstract
Substrate clogging caused by the accumulation of the particulate solids is the worst operational problem for vertical-flow constructed wetlands (VFCW). In this paper, the effects of particulate solids distribution and their accumulation in the substrate with different gravel sizes were investigated. The results demonstrated that the clogging layer can be considered as two parts: one is the blanket-like deposition layer, and the other is the upper substrate clogging layer. Furthermore, the clogging process shall be partitioned as three stages of puncture phase for the pollutants; the formation of the blanket-like deposition layer; and the formation and compaction phase to the whole clogging layer. With reference to the clogging mechanism, it is believed that the particulate solids (< 100 microm) were absorbed firstly by electrostatic forces and van der Waals' forces. This is followed by the "bridging" made by the accumulated solids which act as a "sieve", thus further restricting larger particulate solids to flow through.
