Abstract
In a case control study, serum levels of thrombopoietin (TPO) were determined by a sandwich ELISA in 20 patients (median age, 7 years; range, 2-56 years) with various malignancies who received high-dose chemotherapy and a stem cell rescue operation. The patients received two different transplant modalities: (a) 12 patients received purified autologous peripheral blood CD34+ cells; and (b) 8 patients received cells in the CD34(-) fraction, which still contains many CD34+ cells. No significant differences were observed between the two groups with regard to the duration required to achieve an absolute granulocyte count of >0.5 x 10(9)/liter, the duration of dependence on platelet transfusion, or the number of platelet transfusions. In both groups, the serum TPO levels were inversely correlated with the circulating platelet count. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that significant determinants of the serum TPO level included the circulating platelet count (standardized regression coefficient = -0.5179), transplantation with cells in the CD34(-) fraction (0.2414), solid tumor (0.1420), and the age of the patient (-0.1236; r2 = 0.3021; P < 0.0001). These results suggest that the mode of stem cell support (ie., the presence of accessory cells in the inoculum), age, or the type of preceding chemotherapy affects serum TPO levels after transplantation.

Abstract
In order to investigate the role of insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) in human ovulation, we evaluated the concentrations of IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs) in human follicular fluid (FF). The concentrations of IGFBP-1 in the FFs of 15 women undergoing in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer were measured and related to those of 17beta-estradiol (E2), progesterone and androstenedione in the FFs. IGFBP-1 levels in the FFs were positively correlated with those of E2 and progesterone. No correlation was found between the IGFBP-1 and androstenedione levels in FFs. The concentrations of IGFBP-1 were significantly increased in the FFs which contained mature oocytes compared with those of immature oocytes, whereas IGFBP-3 in FFs tended to decrease as oocytes matured. It is suggested that IGFs may play important roles in human preovulatory processes, and that IGFBP-1 may be a valuable biochemical marker in the evaluation of oocytes.

Abstract
We examined cell culture conditions with various combinations of cytokines including thrombopoietin (TPO) to obtain the most efficient transduction of recombinant retrovirus vectors into G-CSF-mobilized blood CD34+ cells which were obtained from children and purified with an Isolex 50 system (Baxter; Deerfield, IL). Three different 4-day culture conditions for the stimulation of CD34+ cells were compared in terms of a cell-cycle analysis by fluorometry and gene transduction efficiency as determined by resistance to G418 and NeoR polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for individual colony-forming unit-granulocyte/macrophage (CFU-GM) grown in a methylcellulose culture system. The cytokines tested were: A) interleukin (IL)-6 + stem cell factor (SCF); B) IL-3 + IL-6 + SCF, and C) IL-3 + IL-6 + SCF + TPO. Without a cell culture, the percentage of CD34+ cells in the cell cycle (the percentage of cells in phases S and G2/M) was 4.6%. After a four-day culture (n = 5), this value increased with the addition of IL-3 (22%) or IL-3 + TPO (27%, p < 0.05) as compared to that with the baseline cocktail of IL-6 + SCF (15%). The cell number uniformly increased approximately 10-fold in each culture condition. The average efficiency of gene transfer into incubated CD34+ cells with the corresponding combinations of cytokines was, respectively, 57%, 47%, and 30% for G418-screened CFU-GM and 72%, 68%, and 51% for polymerase chain reaction-positive CFU-GM. A statistically significant difference (p < 0.01) was found for G418/CFU-GM with IL-3 + IL-6 + SCF (57%) versus IL-3 + IL-6 + SCF + TPO (30%). Hence, it is likely that the increased cell proliferation produced by the addition of TPO was not necessarily translated into an increased rate of retroviral-mediated gene transduction, possibly because TPO preferentially induced the differentiation of stem cells into mature progenitors in these culture systems.

Abstract
To study the role of vasopressin (VP) in essential hypertension, we examined plasma levels of VP and blood pressure (BP) response to an orally active V1 receptor antagonist, OPC-21268, in hypertensive patients on diets with different sodium contents. Plasma VP was determined in 12 normotensive subjects and 12 patients with mild essential hypertension on a regular sodium diet, and in eight hypertensive patients on a high sodium (250 mmol/day) and a low sodium (25 mmol/day) diet. BP response was examined for 4 h after single oral administration of OPC-21268 (100 mg) or placebo in eight patients on the regular diet, and in six patients on the high and low sodium diets. In four patients on the regular diet, the effects of OPC-21268 on the baroreflex control of heart rate were also examined with intravenous injections of methoxamine. Plasma VP did not differ between the normotensive and hypertensive subjects. Levels of VP in the plasma was higher in the high sodium than in the low sodium period, but the difference was not significant. BP and heart rate did not change significantly after administration of OPC-21268 or placebo under either condition. OPC-21268 also failed to lower BP in salt-sensitive patients on the high sodium diet. The baroreceptor reflex sensitivity was not modified by the administration of OPC-21268. Our results suggest that VP does not play an important role in mild essential hypertension through its action on the V1 receptors regardless of dietary sodium intake.

Abstract
Subjects ranging in age from 50 to 89 years old, either with or without dementia were studied by both ELISA for anti-human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) gag 100-130 antibody and by cranial CT in order to clarify the relationship between HTLV-I infection and dementia. The frequency of anti-HTLV-I antibody was found to be significantly higher in the patients with dementia (24/130, 18.5%) than in those without dementia (11/139, 7.9%) (P=0.0169). Among the various types of dementia, HTLV-I seropositivity was found to be significantly associated with vascular dementia (11/48, 23%) (P=0.0087), but not with Alzheimer type dementia. In addition, HTLV-I seropositivity was also associated with Babinski sign, and the severity of cerebral infarction, ventricular dilatation and periventricular lucency on CT. The presence of HTLV-I therefore appears to be one of the risk factors for vascular dementia in HTLV-I endemic areas.

Abstract
Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) accessory genes including nef, vif, and vpr are important factors that determine the replication and pathogenesis of HIV-1. The state of activation is also important for the replication of HIV-1. We evaluated the properties of nef-, vif-, and vpr-minus macrophage-tropic HIV-1(JR) CSF in primary CD4+ Th1- or Th2-like cell cultures which had been activated through CD3 molecules in the presence of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and IL-12 (Th1-like culture) or IL-4 (Th2-like culture), respectively. In activated Th1- or Th2-like cultures, replication of nef-minus HIV-1(JR-CSF) was markedly lower than that of wild-type HIV-1. Subsequent analysis by site-directed mutagenesis showed that (i) the presence of an acidic amino acid-rich domain (amino acid residues 72 to 75) in the Nef protein was critical for the enhancement of viral DNA synthesis, resulting in increased virus growth rate, and (ii) prolines that form part of Src homology 3 binding domain were not essential for viral replication. We also confirmed the importance of sites by using an HIV-1-infected animal model, the hu-PBL-SCID mouse system, representing HIV-1 replication and pathogenesis in activated CD4+ T cells in vivo. These results indicate that Nef accelerates viral replication in activated CD4+ T cells.

Abstract
It is well known that cardiovascular accidents such as myocardial infarction frequently occur in the morning, but their triggering mechanisms are not clear. The present study investigated circadian variations of hemodynamics and baroreflex functions. Twenty-three patients with essential hypertension were studied. Direct blood pressure (BP) and ECG were recorded by telemeter over 24 h, and then computer-analyzed. The pulse-contour method was used to measure cardiac output (CO) and total peripheral vascular resistance (TPR). The ratio of low to high frequency components (LF/HF) of the RR-interval on ECG was calculated by power spectral analysis. The baroreflex sensitivity index (BRI) was measured on the basis of the ratio delta RR/delta Ps (delta Ps = spontaneous decrease in systolic BP, delta RR = change in RR). Furthermore, 24-h BP changes were transformed algebraically into positive load component (PC) and negative load component (NC) by using a Windkessel model. The circadian variation of hematocrit (Ht) was also measured. The least squares method was used to determine the time at which the maximum and minimum value of each measurement occurred. Whereas the maximum values for BP and CO occurred in the evening (18:30, 17:00), the maximum values for TPR and LF/HF occurred between 06:30 and 08:00, and the minimum value for BRI occurred at 08:00. PC significantly correlated with Ps, heart rate, and CO (r = 0.81, 0.92, 0.67), and NC significantly correlated with BRI and LF/HF (r = 0.71, 0.64). PC (related to cardiovascular function) reached a maximum and NC (related to baroreflex function) reached a minimum in the late morning (11:00). Ht was highest immediately after the subjects got out of bed. These hemodynamic imbalances may negatively influence coronary blood flow in the morning.

Abstract
To clarify the role of genetic factors in atherosclerotic plaque formation in the carotid artery and magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities in the brain, we investigated the association of these abnormalities with the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) genotype. One hundred sixty-nine subjects (age, 59.2+/-0.8 years, mean+/-SE) admitted to our hospital for health checkups underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate lacunar infarction. B-mode ultrasound examinations of the carotid arteries were performed to detect atherosclerotic plaque. The I/D polymorphism of the ACE gene was determined by the polymerase chain reaction method. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to assess the effects of the following variables on the presence of plaque, mean plaque thickness, and number of plaques: fibrinogen, sex, age, body mass index, mean blood pressure, glycosylated hemoglobin, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, hematocrit, and the D allele of the ACE gene. The frequency of carotid atherosclerotic plaque was significantly (P=.034) higher in subjects with the D allele than in those without this allele. However, the frequency of lacunar stroke was similar in these groups. A multivariate regression analysis showed that the presence of plaque was independently associated with the D allele (odds ratio=3.27, P=.016). However, mean plaque thickness and the number of plaques were not associated with the D allele. The D allele of the ACE gene may be involved in the presence of carotid plaque but not in the extent of this plaque or asymptomatic lacunar stroke in Japanese subjects.

Abstract
To investigate the effects of doxazosin on blood pressure and sympathetic nervous activity, we analyzed the circadian variation of blood pressure and the power spectrum of R-R intervals using an ambulatory multibiomedical monitoring system (TM2425) in 10 untreated outpatients with essential hypertension. After a 2-wk placebo period (P-period), we administered 1 to 4 mg of doxazosin mesilate to the patients for 2 to 6 wk (T-period). We measured systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP), heart rate, R-R intervals, posture, and activity with the use of TM2425. Power spectral analysis of R-R intervals was used to calculate the ratio of low to high frequency components (LF/HF). The values were compared between the P-period and T-period. Although daytime blood pressure significantly decreased during the T-period (SBP, 148.1 +/- 5.9 vs. 130.3 +/- 4.4 mmHg; DBP, 92.3 +/- 3.2 vs. 83.6 +/- 2.6 mmHg, p < 0.01), nighttime DBP did not. The LF/HF of R-R intervals in the daytime (5.8 +/- 2.0 vs. 4.9 +/- 1.2, p < 0.01) and the morning rise in blood pressure also decreased significantly (SBP, 17.5 +/- 9.4 vs. 12.1 +/- 6.5 mmHg; DBP, 12.5 +/- 6.5 vs. 8.3 +/- 5.3 mmHg, p < 0.05). We conclude that doxazosin may suppress the morning rise in blood pressure in association with a decrease in sympathetic nervous activity.

Abstract
A series of novel ([1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-b]pyridazin-6-yl) oxyalkylsulfonamides was synthesized and evaluated for the ability to inhibit platelet activating factor (PAF)-induced bronchoconstriction in guinea pigs. The compounds bearing a gem-dialkyl or a cycloalkylidene group at the 2 position of the sulfamoylpropyloxy group in the side chain and a methyl group at the 7 position were found to have potent activity. Among them, 2,2-diethyl-3-(7-methyl[1,2,4]- triazolo[1,5-b]pyridazin-6-yl)oxypropanesulfonamide (13) showed excellent anti-asthmatic activity. Compounds 13 may be of significant value in the treatment of asthma and other respiratory diseases. The structure-activity relationships in this series of compounds are discussed.

Abstract
Hemoptysis is one of the most important clinical problems of cardiopulmonary disease with high mortality rate. Its management is routinely performed with Bronchial Artery Embolization (BAE). However, it was reported that BAE had some disadvantages such as spinal injury and recurrent bleeding. In order to prevent spinal injury, we tried the super selective bronchial artery embolization (ss-BAE). This technique is especially available in the occlusion of the bronchial artery forming the common trunk with the spinal artery. Besides, BAE, considered to be only a palliative treatment, might cause recanalization due to reabsorption of the occlusive agent. So we used metallic coils to prevent this drawback. The ss-BAE with metallic coils was performed in 2 cases who had refractory hemoptysis against conservative therapy. Hemoptysis disappeared in both cases. The ss-BAE with metallic coils was shown to be safer and more effective than ordinary BAE.

Abstract
To help establish an effective gene therapy protocol for patients with congenital metabolic diseases, we evaluated retrovirus-mediated transduction and long-term (LT) expression of the NeoR gene in cryopreserved and thawed CD34+ cells purified from granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)-mobilized peripheral blood (PB) of infant and cord blood (CB). The results were compared with those in bone marrow (BM) CD34+ cells. The final purity of the CD34+-enriched fraction from PB, CB, and BM, based on FACS analysis, was 88 +/- 14%, 73 +/- 13%, and 68 +/- 19% (mean +/- SEM), respectively. Cells were then cultured for 96 hours with supernatant containing the vector in the presence of interleukin (IL)-3, IL-6, and stem cell factor (SCF). The average efficiency of gene transfer into mobilized PB (n = 5) or CB CD34+ cells (n = 6) was significantly higher than that into BM CD34+ cells, as measured by G418-resistant colony-forming units for granulocyte/macrophage (CFU-GM; 59% or 58% vs. 39%; p < 0.05) and PCR-positive CFU-GM (83% or 79% vs. 53%; p < 0.05). When the evaluation was made in an LT culture system with irradiated allogeneic marrow stroma, these efficiencies were, respectively, 74% or 61% vs. 34% (p < 0.005 or < 0.02) for G418-resistant CFU-GM at week 5 of long-term culture, and 88% or 83% vs. 63% (p < 0.05) for PCR-positive CFU-GM. Fluorometric examination was performed for cell-cycle analysis before and after culture, and the results showed that the fraction of cycling cells was largest in freshly prepared BM (18%), whereas only a small portion of PB (4.6%) and CB (2%) was cycling. However, this value was 17% in BM, 22% in PB, and 13% in CB after culture. These results suggest that mobilized PB from small children and CB cells are suitable and realistic targets for clinical gene therapy and that tandem transduction procedures can be achieved by combining CB and PB.

Abstract
Patients with a number of different malignancies have been treated with high-dose chemotherapy and peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT). PBSC already replaced bone marrow as the source of autologous hematopoietic progenitor support. This is due to ease of collection, rapid engraftment and less possibility of tumor cell contamination in the graft. Furthermore, allogeneic transplantation of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) mobilized PBSC is now being increasingly performed. Recent advance of clinical PBSCT and new strategies are stressed in this review. New strategies include CD 34+cell purification, ex vivo expansion of PBSC and PBSC as a target cell for gene therapy. Major future advance may occur better understanding of the mechanism of mobilization and the biology of PBSC.

Abstract
We report a 51-year-old man diagnosed as having immunotactoid glomerulopathy (IT) who achieved partial remission after approximately 1 year of a low-dose prednisolone regimen. On admission, he was noted to show proteinuria, hypoproteinemia, and hypocomplementemia. On electron microscopy of the renal biopsy specimen, the mesangial and subendothelial areas were expanded because of the electron-dense deposits, which were represented by mostly straight and nonbranching hollow microtubule structures. The microtubular width was on average 22.0 nm. Clinical and histological findings did not support the diagnosis of amyloidosis, cryoglobulinemic glomerulonephritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or paraproteinemias. Under treatment with oral prednisolone, 4 months later, the patient's serum albumin level increased from its lowest level of 2.3 to 3.6 g/dL, and CH50 from the lowest level of less than 6.3 to 32.4 U/mL. A 24-hour collection of urine showed that the protein had decreased from its highest level of 3.9 g to 2.0 g. This case suggests the effectiveness of long-term, low-dose prednisolone therapy for IT.

Abstract
A case of T-cell lymphoma of granular lymphocyte (GL) morphology and CD3+CD4+CD56+ phenotype is reported. The lymphoma originated in the subcutaneous tisse of the right thigh and subsequently infiltrated into various organs including the lymph nodes, peripheral blood, bone marrow, skin, lungs, liver, spleen, and peritoneal cavity, and the patient finally developed a hemophagocytic syndrome. The lymphoma cells were positive for CD2, CD3, CD4, and CD56, and negative for CD8, CD16, CD20, and CD57. An identical clonal rearrangement of the T-cell receptor beta chain genes was detected in cells from a lymph node, peripheral blood, and ascites fluid, indicating the monoclonal proliferation of T cells in such organs. This is a T-cell GL lymphoma, expressing the unusual phenotype of CD3+CD4+CD8-CD16-CD56+, which has not been previously reported. The development of hemophagocytic syndrome has also to our knowledge not previously been reported in T-cell GL lymphoma.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate autonomic nervous function by power-spectral analysis of heart-rate variability in salt-sensitive and non-salt-sensitive patients with essential hypertension under the conditions of low and high salt intakes. DESIGN AND METHODS The blood pressures, heart rates, and electrocardiogram R-R intervals of 20 hypertensive patients were measured at intervals of 30 min during a 24 h period using a portable recorder (TM-2425) on the last day of the high- (250 mmol NaCl/day) and low-salt (25 mmol NaCl/day) diet periods. The patients whose 24 h average mean blood pressures were increased by more than 10% by the high salt intake were defined as salt-sensitive (n = 10); the other patients were considered non-salt-sensitive (n = 10). Power-spectral analysis of R-R intervals was performed to obtain the low-frequency component (0.05-0.15 Hz) and the high-frequency component (0.15-0.40 Hz). RESULTS The average 24 h blood pressure in the salt-sensitive patients was increased by the high salt intake [by 19.1 +/- 2.0/9.1 +/- 0.8 mmHg (mean +/- SEM)], whereas the heart rate did not change. In contrast, the increase in 24 h blood pressure in the non-salt-sensitive patients caused by the high salt intake was not significant and the heart rate was decreased significantly by the high salt intake (by 5.9 +/- 1.4 beats/min). The high-salt diet increased significantly the high-frequency component and decreased the low-frequency:high-frequency component ratio both during the daytime and during the night-time for the non-salt-sensitive patients. In contrast, the high-frequency component and the night-time low-frequency: high-frequency component ratio of the salt-sensitive patients did not respond to dietary salt manoeuvres. CONCLUSIONS Responses of the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems to dietary salt manoeuvres were blunted in salt-sensitive patients. These altered modulations of the autonomic nervous system may contribute to the salt sensitivity of the blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension.

Abstract
From April 1994 to November 1996, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) was performed on 166 patients. Fifty-seven patients were older than 70 years of age (Group A), while 109 were younger than 70 years of age (Group B). In group A, such symptoms as severe stenosis of the left main coronary artery, a history of systemic hypertension, calcification of the ascending aorta, and postoperative respiratory complications with pneumonia were all significantly higher than in Group B. Regarding hospital mortality, the difference between the two groups was not significant. Based on these findings, the use of intensive respiratory care for elderly patients over than 70 years of age is thus considered to help reduce the occurrence of such complications.

Abstract
The murine IgG3 monoclonal antibody NCC-ST-421 (ST-421), raised against human gastric cancer, shows strong reactivity with the Le(a)/Le(a) (al-fucosylated extended type 1 chain) antigen expressed on gastrointestinal (GI) cancer cells. ST-421 is capable of mediating both antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) by human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL), and complement dependent cytotoxicity (CDC). We investigated combination immunotherapy with OK-432, a streptococcal preparation, and ST-421 in vitro and in vivo. ADCC against Colo 205 (a human colon cancer cell line) was enhanced 2 to 3 fold after preincubation of PBL with OK-432 in vitro. These effect's were strongest when PBL were preincubated with OK-432 at a concentration of 0.5 ng/ml for 24 hours. In vivo, a human colon cancer xenograft model exhibited significant growth suppression after combined treatment with ST-421 and OK-432. Such combination immunotherapy may therefore be clinically useful in GI cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We examined four patients who exhibited both idiopathic retinal vasculitis and elevated serum IgD levels. Uveitis caused by Behçet's disease is also associated with high levels of serum IgD. Therefore, the clinical features of these patients were investigated and the possible relationship between retinal vasculitis and elevated serum IgD was examined after undertaking a study of increased IgD levels in patients diagnosed with uveitis. METHODS The study population was composed of 110 patients: 49 with Behçet's disease, 15 with sarcoidosis, 10 with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease, and 36 with other forms of uveitis. IgD measurements were performed using modifications of the latex photometric immunoassay. Surface IgD (sIgD) expression in peripheral lymphocytes was determined by immunofluorescence, and the correlation between serum IgD levels and the percentage of sIgD-positive cells was examined. RESULTS Twelve of the 110 patients had an elevated serum IgD. Eight of the 12 had Behçet's disease, and 4 were diagnosed with idiopathic retinal vasculitis. These 4 patients were HLA-A24+ females whose ages ranged from 8 to 25 years. A linear correlation between the serum IgD levels and the percentage of sIgD-positive cells was found. CONCLUSION Hyperimmunoglobulinemia D state was found in Behçet's disease and idiopathic retinal vasculitis. These diseases may represent a new clinical entity characterized by signs of retinal vasculitis and hyperimmunoglobulinemia D that results from abnormal B cell activation and immune complex-mediated responses.

Abstract
Effect of TYB-2285 and its metabolites on immune responses by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from children with bronchial asthma was investigated. TYB-2285 and its metabolites have immunosuppressive activity for the proliferation by Df-stimulated patients' lymphocytes. Concanavalin A (Con A)-activated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from the patients were not affected by the same treatment. The results indicate that TYB-2285 and its metabolites are capable of suppressing antigen-induced 3H-thymidine (3H-TdR) uptake but not the response induced by Con A. Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) production by Df-stimulated PBMC from patients with active asthma, which was lower than that of normal lymphocytes, were reversed beyond the levels of that in normal subjects. Thus reduced production of IFN-gamma by Df-stimulated patients' lymphocytes was increased by TYB-2285 and its metabolites in a dose-dependent manner. This phenomenon was not observed in lymphocytes from normal subjects. Furthermore, TYB-2285 inhibited IL-4 production induced by Df antigen in asthmatic patients' lymphocytes. Taken, together, TYB-2285 could work as a weak immunosuppressant to modify lymphocytes' responses to allergen in patients with bronchial asthma. These data underscore the potential benefit for the patients with bronchial asthma.

Abstract
We herein describe 4 adult patients with upper cervical myelitis presenting with paresthesia in the distal parts of all four limbs and who also all had hyperIgEemia. Two of them had full-blown atopic dermatitis at the time of neurologic illness, while the others had a preceding history of atopic dermatitis. All showed high signal intensity lesions at either the C3 or C4 segment, which mainly affected the posterior column on the T2-weighted spinal cord magnetic resonance imaging. All patients had specific IgE antibodies to two mite antigens and their onset of myelitis coincided with the seasonal increase of the mite antigens in Japan. Therefore, it is possible that the atopic conditions with hyperIgEemia in these patients may thus have contributed to the development of myelitis.

Abstract
We examined effects of salt and cilazapril on the Ca pump and Na/Ca exchange system in arterial smooth muscle of Dahl salt-sensitive (DS) rats. Twenty-four DS rats were assigned to four groups. H and H+ rats were fed a high salt diet; L- and L+ rats were fed a low salt diet. H+ and L+ were administered cilazapril. Aortic rings were superfused with physiologic saline and isometric tension was measured. Relaxation of low Na+-induced contraction was promoted by the removal of external Ca. Cilazapril significantly decreased blood pressure in both the high and low salt diet groups. The inhibition of renin-angiotensin system by cilazapril showed that Ca extrusion by ATP-driven Ca pump was decreased by salt loading, and that Ca extrusion by Na/Ca exchange was increased by salt loading. There was a negative correlation between Ca extrusion by Ca pump and blood pressure, and a positive correlation between Ca extrusion by Na/Ca exchange and blood pressure. These results suggest that the decrease of Ca2+ extrusion by ATP-driven Ca pump resulting from a high salt diet might lead to an elevation in the concentration of cellular Ca2+ and contribute to the mechanism of hypertension in DS rats, and that Ca2+ extrusion by the Na/Ca exchange might be increased in compensation for an increase in cellular Ca2+ concentration on the high salt diet.

Abstract
The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the serum level of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix. Serum levels of sICAM-1 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in patients with cervical cancer (stage 0 through IV). Expression of mRNA in tumor tissues was evaluated by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Serum level of sICAM-1 in patients with advanced-stage (II-IV) or recurrent cervical cancer was found to be increased significantly. Expression of ICAM-1 mRNA was observed in most tumor tissues. Results suggest that sICAM-1 is shed from the cancerous tissue in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix.
