Time trend of exposure to dechloranes: Plasma samples of German young adults from the environmental specimen bank collected from 1995 to 2017

Dechloranes, like Dechlorane Plus® are commonly used flame retardants identified by the EU as substances of very high concern (SVHC) because of their persistence and bioaccumulation potential. To characterize the dechlorane exposure of Germans in the last two decades, 180 archived blood plasma samples of the German Environmental Specimen Bank (students aged 20-29 years) collected at six time points between 1995 and 2017 were analyzed for four dechloranes; namely Dechlorane Plus® (syn- and anti-DDC-CO), dechlorane 602 (DDC-DBF), and dechlorane 603 (DDC-Ant). These were quantified using a GC-MS/MS method. Overall, anti- and syn-DDC-CO were detected in 88% and 98% of the samples, whereas DDC-DBF and DDC-Ant were found in 40% and 37% of the samples, respectively. The median (95th percentile) values were 1.0 ng/g lipid weight (l.w.) (3.0 ng/g l.w.). for anti-DDC-CO, 0.6 ng/g l.w (1.9 ng/g l.w.). for syn-DDC-CO, 0.1 ng/g l.w (0.6 ng/g l.w.). for DDC-DBF, and 0.1 ng/g l.w (0.2 ng/g l.w.). for DDC-Ant. The 95th percentile concentrations of the sum of syn- and anti-DDC-CO decreased from 4.2 ng/g l.w. in 1995, to 2.9 ng/g l.w. in 1999, and subsequently increased to 3.7 ng/g l.w. in 2008, and up to 5.9 ng/g l.w. in 2017. A statistically significant decrease with time was observed for DDC-DBF and DDC-Ant, but not for DDC-CO. Our medians found in blood samples in 2017 are similar to those observed in Germany in 2013/14, but higher compared to values reported in other European countries. Overall, more toxicological and monitoring data is needed to better characterize the potential impact on health.

Biophysical methods to quantify bacterial behaviors at oil-water interfaces

Motivated by the need for improved understanding of physical processes involved in bacterial biodegradation of catastrophic oil spills, we review biophysical methods to probe bacterial motility and adhesion at oil-water interfaces. This review summarizes methods that probe bulk, average behaviors as well as local, microscopic behaviors, and highlights opportunities for future work to bridge the gap between biodegradation and biophysics.

Bioaccumulation and biotransformation of arsenic in Leptolyngbya boryana

Leptolyngbya boryana (L. boryana) is a typical filamentous cyanobacterium that is widely distributed in aquatic ecosystems and is considered to play an important role in the arsenic biogeochemical cycle. Our results showed that L. boryana resisted arsenite (As(III)) and arsenate (As(V)) concentrations up to 0.25 mM and 5 mM, respectively. When exposed to 100 μM As(III) or As(V) for 4 weeks, L. boryana accumulated as much arsenic as 570.0 mg kg^-1 and 268.5 mg kg^-1, respectively. After the 4-week exposure to As(III) and As(V), organoarsenicals including dimethylarsenate (DMAs(V)) and oxo-arsenosugar-phosphate (Oxo-PO₄) were detected in the cells of L. boryana, while inorganic arsenic, especially As(V), was still the main species in both the cells and medium. Furthermore, arsenic oxidation was observed to be solely caused by L. boryana cells and was considered the dominant detoxification pathway. In conclusion, due to its powerful arsenic accumulation, biotransformation, and detoxification abilities, L. boryana might play an important role in arsenic remediation in aquatic environments.

Accumulation and transformation of benzo[a]pyrene in Haplic Chernozem under artificial contamination

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been a major concern because of their carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, teratogenicity and wide distribution in the environment. Over 90% of PAHs in the environment exist on soil surface/sediment. Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is one of the predominant PAHs in soil. Thus, it is critically important to understand the patterns of BaP accumulation and transformation peculiarities in soil for the risk assessment. The studies were conducted in model experiment with Haplic Chernozem spiked with various doses of BaP (20, 200, 400 and 800 µg kg^-1) equivalent to 1, 10, 20 and 40 levels of maximum permissible concentrations. The unique properties of Haplic Chernozem were studied allow to accumulate and transform BaP as well as barley plants ability to absorb of some BaP concentration. Extraction of BaP from the soil was carried out by the saponification method. The qualitative and quantitative determination of BaP and other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was performed by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (Agilent 1260 Germany, 2014). BaP accumulation in soil depended on the applied BaP concentrations in Haplic Chernozem. Studying the features of PAHs transformation in the soil of a model experiment 1 year after the compound application showed the BaP content in the soil decreased up to 11-40%. Two years after the BaP application the content in the soil decreased up to 15-44% from the initial BaP content in the soil. The percentage of BaP concentration reduction in Haplic Chernozem increased with an increase in the dose of the applied xenobiotic. An increase in the dose of the applied pollutant to the soil of the model experiment contributed to an increase in all PAHs, which indicated a rapid BaP transformation in Haplic Chernozem. The PAHs content in the soils of model experiment in the first year of the research formed the following descending series: pyrene > chrysene > fluoranthene > phenanthrene. In the second year of research the phenanthrene content became higher than the fluoranthene content. The content of these compounds exceeded 20% of the total PAHs content in the soil samples in the first and second years of the model experiment. The features of PAHs accumulation and transformation in soils under artificial pollution showed the degradation of large-nuclear PAHs, starting from 5-ring polyarenes, and their structural reorganization into the less-nuclear polyarenes, such as 4-, 3-, and 2-ring PAHs. During the 2 years of the model experiment the BaP concentration in the soil decreased up to 15-44% from the initial BaP content in the soil.

Trace element concentrations in six fish species from freshwater lentic environments and evaluation of possible health risks according to international standards of consumption

Multi-element concentrations (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, and Sr) were analyzed in the muscle of six fish species (Hoplias malabaricus, Oligosarcus jenynsii, Rhamdia quelen, Bryconamericus iheringii, Astyanax fasciatus, and Odontesthes bonariensis) with different diets and habits from the Río Tercero Reservoir (RTR) in Córdoba, Argentina, during the wet and dry seasons. Besides, potential human health risks, associated with the consumption of these elements, have been assessed considering the average daily intake (EDI) in children and adults. Additionally, the target hazard quotient (THQ) and carcinogenic risk (CR) were evaluated taking into account the intake by the general population, fishermen, and consumption frequency recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA), the maximum scientific reference in cardiology in the USA and worldwide. All species presented quantifiable values in muscle for all the analyzed elements (Al, As, Cr, Hg, Ni, Se, and Sr), except for Cd and Pb, being Al and Sr the most accumulated elements in all species in both seasons. The consumption of edible muscles of the species studied in this reservoir represents a toxicological risk to humans. Mercury and As were the main elements that presented a health risk through the consumption of fish. Their concentrations in most fish species were above the maximum daily allowable concentrations, and THQ values were several times greater than 1. In addition, according to AHA recommendations, the cancer risk caused by As was greater than the acceptable value of 10^-4 in all species studied, and in both seasons, with the exception of A. fasciatus, in the rainy season. These results indicate that the consumption of fish from the RTR exposes the inhabitants to possible health risks, especially when considering the consumption frequency recommended by the AHA. Therefore, fish intake from this reservoir should be limited to minimize potential risks to the health of consumers. Finally, the results of this study are useful for controlling pollution and developing preventive and palliative policies to protect populations in contact not only with the reservoir but also with other areas of the world with similar conditions.

Uptake and toxicity of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate in Brassica chinensis L

This work focuses on the bioaccumulation and toxic effects of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in the leafy vegetable Shanghaiqing (SHQ) (Brassica chinensis L.). The accumulated DEHP amount in the edible part and roots of SHQ increased as the DEHP concentration in the soil increased. DEHP accumulation was higher in the roots than in the edible part of the plant. The root concentration factors and bioaccumulation factors for DEHP in SHQ were 0.13-2.49 and 0.03-2.00, respectively. The DEHP translocation factors were below 1.0, indicating that DEHP preferentially accumulated in plant roots. The DEHP risk index in the edible part of SHQ in relation to the human body and in terms of dietary exposure risk assessment was also below 1.0, indicating a low health risk. High DEHP concentrations caused 1) inhibition of SHQ growth, 2) an increase in SHQ chlorophyll and malondialdehyde contents and 3) a decrease in soluble sugar and vitamin contents. Low DEHP concentrations stimulated total superoxide dismutase, peroxidase and catalase activities, while high DEHP levels showed an inhibitory effect. DEHP presence in soil affected not only SHQ growth but also quality. Our results provide the data needed for the proper assessment of food safety and the ecological impact of DEHP contamination in agricultural soils.

Metal oxide nanoparticles facilitate the accumulation of bifenthrin in earthworms by causing damage to body cavity

In this study, we explored the influence of two metal oxide nanoparticles, nano CuO and nano ZnO (10, 50, 250 mg/kg), on accumulation of bifenthrin (100 μg/kg) in earthworms (Eisenia fetida) and its mechanism. The concentrations of bifenthrin in earthworms from binary exposure groups (bifenthrin + CuO and bifenthrin + ZnO) reached up to 23.2 and 28.9 μg/g, which were 2.65 and 3.32 times of that in bifenthrin exposure group without nanoparticles, respectively, indicating that nanoparticles facilitated the uptake of bifenthrin in earthworms. The contents of biomarkers (ROS, SOD, and MDA) in earthworms indicated that nanoparticles and bifenthrin caused damage to earthworms. Ex vivo test was utilized to investigate the toxic effects of the pollutants to cell membrane of earthworm coelomocytes and mechanism of increased bifenthrin accumulation. In ex vivo test, cell viability in binary exposure groups declined up to 30% and 21% compared to the control group after 24 h incubation, suggesting that coelomocyte membrane was injured by the pollutants. We conclude that nanoparticles damage the body cavity of earthworms, and thus lead to more accumulation of bifenthrin in earthworms. Our findings provide insights into the interactive accumulation and toxicity of nanoparticles and pesticides to soil organisms.

Uptake of halogenated organic compounds (HOCs) into peanut and corn during the whole life cycle grown in an agricultural field

Here, we elucidated the uptake and translocation of numerous halogenated organic compounds (HOCs) into corn and peanut throughout their life cycle cultivated in an agricultural field of an electronic waste recycling area, where plants were simultaneously exposed to contaminants in soil and ambient air. The geometric mean concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were 22.3 and 11.9 ng/g in peanut and 16.6 and 13.6 ng/g in corn, respectively. Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE, 6.07 ng/g) and dechlorane plus (DPs, 6.22 ng/g) also showed significant concentrations in peanuts. The plant uptake was initiated from root absorption at the emergence stage but it was subsequently surpassed by leaves absorption from the air since the late seedling stage or early reproductive stage. There was a rapid uptake of lower halogenated HOCs at the early vegetative stages in both species. However, robust uptake of highly halogenated compounds at the reproductive stages suggests a delayed accumulation of them by the plants. PBDE and PCB congener profiles suggest more noticeable tendency for inter-compartment translocation in peanut than in corn during the plant development. The DP and HBCD isomeric compositions in peanut (enriched with syn-DP and γ-HBCD) were different from those in the rhizosphere soils and air, suggesting a more stereoisomer-selective uptake and/or biotransformation in this species compared to corn. The bioaccumulation factors for root-soil and stem-root of these HOCs in most cases were <1. The tissue-distributions demonstrated that leaves serve as a significant reservoir of absorbed HOCs under the field conditions, whereas the low concentrations in peanut and corn kernels indicated translocation of most HOCs into this compartment was significantly hindered (especially for highly halogenated compounds).

Exogenous salicylic acid mitigates the accumulation of some pesticides in cucumber seedlings under different cultivation methods

Salicylic acid (SA) is a crucial signal molecule and phytohormone, regulating the biotic and abiotic stress responses as well as plant development. In this research, we comparatively examined the effects of exogenous SA on the behaviors of thiamethoxam (THIM), hymexazol (HMI) and chlorantraniliprole (CAP) in cucumber planting systems under soil pot and hydroponic cultivation. The cucumber seedlings were transplanted into soil or nutrient solution containing a target pesticide (1 mg/kg) or a target pesticide with SA (1 mg/kg) after the fourth leaf emerged. We examined the behaviors of pesticides both the SA treated and nontreated plants by analyzing cucumber root, stem and leaf samples taken on the 0-21 days following the root treatment. The root concentration factor (RCF), bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factors (TF_stem and TF_leaf) were calculated for the comparison of the differences in the behaviors of pesticides. We found that the accumulation behaviors of pesticides in planting systems were related to the physicochemical properties of pesticides, exogenous SA and cultivation methods. Exogenous SA had a certain promoting effect on the degradation of pesticides in soil and nutrient solution, resulting in reduced half-lives. SA was able to block the accumulation of pesticides in roots and leaves and alleviated the accumulation ability of roots, the bioconcentration ability of plants, and the translocation ability from roots to leaves. Interestingly, SA had more distinct effects on the behaviors of pesticides under hydroponic experiments than under soil pot experiments. Furthermore, the behaviors of clothianidin (CLO), the main metabolite of THIM, were also assessed, indicating that THIM was mainly metabolized to CLO in leaves and stems, and SA facilitated this process. Our findings suggest that SA has a certain regulatory effect on the accumulation of pesticides in plants, and SA-blocked pesticide accumulation is practically rewarding for improving food safety.

Tidal elevation is the key factor modulating burial rates and composition of organic matter in a coastal wetland with multiple habitats

This study examines long-term burial rates of organic carbon (OC), organic nitrogen (ON), and total sulphur (TS) in a tidal-dominated coastal wetland with a high spatial heterogeneity and habitat diversity, and long history of human impacts, Cádiz Bay (SW Spain). Using replicate sediment cores, we quantified fluxes of these elements over a transect, extending from the lower saltmarsh (Spartina maritima, ~0.3 m mean sea level, MSL) to the lower intertidal region (Zostera noltei, ~ - 0.7 m MSL). Potential organic matter (OM) sources to the sediment were examined using an extensive dataset on carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes, and C:N molar ratios of primary producers in the region. OC burial rates decreased from the sites below MSL (~80 gC·m^-2·y^-1) to the lower saltmarsh (~50 gC·m^-2·y^-1), whereas ON burial rates showed an opposite pattern (~3 gN·m^-2·y^-1 and ~4 gN·m^-2·y^-1 observed below and above MSL, respectively). TS burial rates (0.5-46 gS·m^-2·y^-1) did not show any trend along the sea-land gradient. Hence, (tidal) elevation appeared to be an important determinant of sediment biogeochemical properties, and predictor of OM burial rates. The Bayesian mixing model suggested a well-mixed combination of subtidal and terrestrial/high-marsh OM sources to the surface sediments, with no clear indication of an increased contribution from the particular vegetation species inhabiting the sediments. The indication that there is substantial transport, remineralization and cycling of OM between habitats, suggests diversity may play an important role in maintaining this function, reinforcing the idea that a holistic, catchment-scale view is appropriate for understanding and preserving the long-term burial of OM in coastal wetlands.

Variation in arsenic accumulation and translocation among 74 main rice cultivars in Jiangsu Province, China

Arsenic (As) is a ubiquitous carcinogen and environmental toxin. In China, rice consumption is a major dietary source of inorganic As. Thus, the development of strategies to decrease As accumulation in rice is of considerable importance. In this study, we investigated variation in As accumulation and translocation among 74 hydroponically grown rice cultivars in Jiangsu Province, China. We also examined the relationships between As accumulation and translocation, and the uptake of elements such as silicon (Si), phosphorus (P), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn). Our results showed 3.43-, 2.7-, and 6.34-fold variations in shoot As concentration, root As concentration, and root-to-shoot As translocation factors (TFs), respectively, among 74 cultivars, indicating that cultivar genotype significantly affected As accumulation and translocation. Redundancy analysis revealed that As uptake and transport were more closely related to P and Mn uptake than to Si and Fe uptake, for all 74 rice genotypes. In addition, the 20 cultivars that accumulated the least shoot As (low-As), and those that accumulated the most shoot As (high-As), exhibited different strategies in response to As exposure. The As TFs were key factors influencing shoot As concentrations in high-As cultivars, but this was not the case in low-As cultivars. In the latter, more accumulated As were sequestered in roots, which restricted As translocation to shoots, thus leading to lower shoot As concentrations. In addition, the shoot As concentrations of various rice cultivars and their parents differed. The low-As rice cultivar YJ2 exhibited a significantly lower shoot As concentration than its parents, suggesting that it is possible to breed low-As rice cultivars from parents that also exhibit low-As characteristics.

Efficacy of fenugreek plant for ascorbic acid assisted phytoextraction of copper (Cu); A detailed study of Cu induced morpho-physiological and biochemical alterations

Phytoremediation via phyto-extraction is well recognized and sustainable principle for the economical removal of heavy metals from contaminated water and soil. The twofold objective of the present research work was to investigate the remediation potential of fenugreek for Cu under the influence of ascorbic acid (AA). The effect of copper-ascorbic acid chelation on the growth regulation of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graceum L.) and its potential to accumulate Cu was investigated in hydroponic medium to optimize concentration with complete randomized design (CRD). Juvenile fenugreek plants were treated with different treatments of AA (5 mM) and Cu (100, 250 and 500 μM). The different morpho-physiological parameters of fenugreek plant such as growth, biomass and chlorophylls were significantly reduced under Cu stress. However, the activities of antioxidant enzymes, electrolyte leakage and reactive oxygen species enhanced with increasing concentration of applied Cu. Results indicated significant increase in plant growth, biomass, physiology and antioxidant enzymes and decrease in reactive oxygen species and electrolyte production in AA mediated fenugreek plants compared to controls and Cu only treated plants. However, it was also found that AA enhanced Cu concentration maximum up to 42% in leaf, 18% in stem and 45% in roots as compared to Cu treated only plants. Moreover, application of AA signified the research results revealing to act as growth regulator and chelator under Cu stress.

Do toxicokinetic and toxicodynamic processes hold the same for light and heavy rare earth elements in terrestrial organism Enchytraeus crypticus?

The widespread use of rare earth elements (REEs) in numerous sectors have resulted in their release into the environment. Existing knowledge about the effects of REEs were acquired mainly based on toxicity tests with aquatic organisms and a fixed exposure time, Here, the dynamic accumulation and toxicity of REEs (La, Ce, and Gd) in soil organism Enchytraeus crypticus were determined and modeled by a first-order one-compartment model and a time-toxicity logistic model, respectively. Generally, the accumulation and toxicity of REEs were both exposure level- and time-dependent. The overall uptake rate constants were 2.97, 2.48, and 2.38 L kg^-1d^-1 for La, Ce, and Gd, respectively. The corresponding elimination rate constants were 0.99, 0.78, and 0.56 d^-1, respectively. The worms exhibited faster uptake and elimination ability for light REEs (La and Ce) than for heavy REEs (Gd). For all three REEs, the LC50 values based on exposure concentrations decreased with time and reached ultimate values after approximately 10 d exposure. The estimated ultimate LC50 values (LC50∞) were 279, 334, and 358 mg L^-1 for Ce, Gd, and La, respectively. When expressed as body concentration, the LC50_inter value was almost constant with time, demonstrating that internal body concentration could be a better indicator of dynamic toxicity of REEs than external dose. This study highlights that specific REE and exposure time should be taken into account in accurately assessing risk of REEs.

Antimony symplastic and apoplastic absorption, compartmentation, and xylem translocation in Brassica parachinensis L. under antimonate and antimonite

Antimony (Sb) excess accumulation in edible parts of crops causes potential risks to human health. However, knowledge about the mechanisms of its accumulation within vegetable plants is still not well known. Here, we investigated the physiological processes of Sb involved in symplastic and apoplastic absorption, compartmentation by roots, and translocation in xylem in Brassica parachinensis L. exposed to antimonate (SbV) and antimonite (SbIII) forms. The results showed that plants treated with SbIII emerged to be more toxic than SbV as proved by the lower biomass and the higher concentrations of malonaldehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) in plant tissues, especially at high dosages. The Sb concentration showed more in shoots but less in roots treated with SbV than with SbIII. The total Sb accumulation was higher under the SbV treatment than the SbIII treatment, mainly due to the higher accumulation in shoots. Additionally, the Sb concentration in symplastic flow of roots was higher exposed to SbV than SbIII, while no differences were found for the Sb concentration in apoplastic flow between them. Moreover, the Sb concentration in cell walls of roots was higher exposed to SbIII than SbV, especially at high levels. Furthermore, the Sb concentration in xylem was higher exposed to SbV than SbIII, and a greatly positive correlation was observed between the Sb concentrations in xylem and shoots. Overall, these findings revealed that vegetable plants accumulated more SbV than SbIII in edible parts mainly due to xylem translocation rather than root absorption.

Citric acid enhanced phytoextraction of nickel (Ni) and alleviate Mentha piperita (L.) from Ni-induced physiological and biochemical damages

Phytoremediation is considered one of the well-established and sustainable techniques for the removal of heavy metals and metalloids from contaminated sites. The metal extraction ability of the plants can be enhanced by using suitable organic materials in combination with metal-tolerant plants. This experiment was carried out to investigate the phytoextraction potential of Mentha piperita L. for nickel (Ni) with and without citric acid (CA) amendment in hydroponic experiment. The experiment was performed in controlled glass containers with continuous aeration in complete randomized design (CRD). Juvenile M. piperita plants were treated with different concentrations of Ni (100, 250, and 500 μM) alone and/or combined with CA (5 mM). After harvesting the plants, the morpho-physiological and biochemical attributes as well as Ni concentrations in different tissues of M. piperita plants were measured. Results revealed that Ni stress significantly decreased the plant agronomic traits, photosynthesis in comparison to control. Nickel stress enhanced the antioxidant enzymes activities and caused the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in M. piperita. The CA treatment under Ni stress significantly improved the plant morpho-physiological and biochemical characteristics when compared with Ni treatments alone. The results demonstrated that CA enhanced the Ni concentrations in roots, stems, and leaves up to 138.2%, 54.2%, and 38%, respectively, compared to Ni-only-treated plants. The improvement in plant growth with CA under Ni stress indicated that CA is beneficial for Ni phytoextraction by using tolerant plant species. Graphical abstract.

Phycoremediation of Precious Metals by Cladophora fracta From Mine Gallery Waters Causing Environmental Contamination

We have presented a study to determine the possibility for the usage of Cladophora fracta as bioaccumulator of the metals (Au) and silver (Ag) both have characteristics of pollutant and precious in mine water. The highest concentrations accumulated by C. fracta were determined as 5.8 ± 0.3 and 5323 ± 75 µg/kg for Au and Ag, respectively. The results showed that the accumulation of the metals measured followed the order of Ag > Au. The Metal Pollution Index (MPI) values calculated between 39.37 × 10^-3 and 175.7 × 10^-3 were used to determine the pollution degree of C. fracta. As a result, it was determined that C. fracta highly accumulated the precious metals from the gallery water. Therefore, C. fracta was a good bioaccumulator for the remediation of Au and Ag in mine gallery waters. In this way, it is possible to minimize or eliminate the environmental risks of the precious metals in the gallery waters.

Uptake, translocation and accumulation of 14C-triclosan in soil-peanut plant system

Triclosan is an antimicrobial agent that is ubiquitously present in water, biosolids and soil. Current agricultural practices, such as irrigation with treated wastewater and soil amendment with biosolids, often cause further triclosan contamination in agricultural fields. However, the fate and crop uptake of triclosan in agrofood systems and related human exposure are still not fully understood. In the present study, ¹⁴C-triclosan was used to trace the fate and distribution of triclosan in a soil-peanut plant system. ¹⁴C-triclosan in the system maintained an excellent mass balance ranging from 92.5% to 102.7%. ¹⁴C-triclosan uptake from soil to peanut plants at the harvest stage (120 d) was only 1.02 ± 0.17% of the applied ¹⁴C. The bioconcentration factors in different tissues followed the order of roots > stems > leaves > fruits. The concentration of ¹⁴C-triclosan in peanut fruits was 0.76-0.84 μg g^-1. ¹⁴C-triclosan was more easily accumulated in peanut kernels (69.2 ± 6.30%) than peanut hulls (27.5 ± 5.77%) and skin (3.28 ± 0.53%). The estimated daily intake (EDI) values suggested that peanut consumption represented a minimal risk to human health. The results of this study help to develop a better understanding of the fate of triclosan in the soil-peanut plant system and assess its environmental and human health risks.

Do whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) larvae show adaptive variation in the avoidance of microplastic ingestion?

The presence of microplastics in aquatic ecosystems has recently received increased attention. Small plastic particles may resemble natural food items of larval fish and other aquatic organisms, and create strong selective pressures on the feeding traits in exposed populations. Here, we examined if larval ingestion of 90 μm polystyrene microspheres, in the presence of zooplankton (Artemia nauplii, mean length = 433 μm), shows adaptive variation in the European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus). A full-factorial experimental breeding design allowed us to estimate the relative contributions of male (sire) and female (dam) parents and full-sib family variance in early feeding traits, and also genetic (co)variation between these traits. We also monitored the magnitude of intake and elimination of microplastics from the alimentary tracts of the larvae. In general, larval whitefish ingested small numbers of microplastics (mean = 1.8, range = 0-26 particles per larva), but ingestion was marginally affected by the dam, and more strongly by the full-sib family variation. Microsphere ingestion showed no statistically significant additive genetic variation, and thus, no heritability. Moreover, microsphere ingestion rate covaried positively with the ingestion of Artemia, further suggesting that larvae cannot adaptively avoid microsphere ingestion. Together with the detected strong genetic correlation between food intake and microplastic intake, the results suggest that larval fish do not readily possess additive genetic variation that would help them to adapt to the increasing pollution by microplastics. The conflict between feeding on natural food and avoiding microplastics deserves further attention.

Accumulation and associated phytotoxicity of novel chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate in wheat seedlings

Novel alternatives of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonates (Cl-PFAESs) are increasingly being detected in the aquatic and terrestrial environment. Previous studies mainly focused on aquatic biota; however, the knowledge about the ecotoxicological risk they pose to terrestrial plants was still lacking. In this study, the accumulation of two Cl-PFAES (6:2 and 8:2 Cl-PFAES) and PFOS in wheat seedlings at environmentally relevant levels (50 and 100 μg L^-1) was investigated. Concentrations of Cl-PFAESs in the roots were an order of magnitude higher than those in shoots, indicating that they were primarily accumulated in the roots. The values of root and shoot bioconcentration factor was comparable between 6:2 Cl-PFAES and PFOS. However, these indexes of 8:2 Cl-PFAES were 42-91% higher and 70-76% lower than PFOS, respectively. As a result, 6:2 Cl-PFAES had a similar accumulation pattern as PFOS, whereas 8:2 Cl-PFAES was predominantly restricted to the roots, which might be attributed to their hydrophobicity and carbon chain length. In addition, at 250 mg L^-1 of Cl-PFAESs, plant biomass and pigment content were 24-30% and 0.4-18%, respectively, which were lower than those of PFOS. As compared with PFOS, Cl-PFAESs induced higher levels of root membrane permeability, reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde content, as well as reduced the activities of antioxidant enzymes and glutathione content. These suggested the occurrence of a severer oxidative damage and the breakdown of the antioxidant defence system in wheat cells. Therefore, we conclude that Cl-PFAESs might pose a higher potential threat to the environment than PFOS.

Concentrations levels and effects of 17alpha-Ethinylestradiol in freshwater and marine waters and bivalves: A review

Pharmaceutical drugs are contaminants of emerging concern and are amongst the most frequent in the aquatic environment. Even though a vast literature indicate that pharmaceuticals exert negative impacts towards aquatic organisms, mainly in vertebrates, there is still limited information regarding the effects of these drugs in freshwater and marine bivalves. Marine bivalves have a high ecological and socio-economic value and are considered good bioindicator species in ecotoxicology and risk assessment programs. Furthermore, another lacking point on these studies is the absence of bioconcentration data, with no clear relationship between the concentration of drugs on tissue and the biological effects. 17alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2) is a synthetic hormone with high estrogenic potency that was added to the Watch List adopted by the European Commission stating the priority substances to be monitored. Thus, this review summarizes the current knowledge on the concentration levels and effects of EE2 on freshwater and marine bivalves. The inclusion in the Watch List, the presence in freshwater and marine systems, and the impact exerted on aquatic biota, even at trace concentrations, justify the review devoted to this pharmaceutical drug. Globally the available studies found that EE2 induces individual and sub-individual (e.g. tissue, cellular, biochemical and molecular levels of biological organization) impacts in bivalves. Essentially, this estrogenic compound, even in trace concentrations, was found to have accumulated in wild and laboratory exposed bivalves. The most common effects reported were changes on the reproductive function and energy metabolism. The studies used in this review support keeping the EE2 on the Watch List and highlight the need to increase the number of monitorization studies since clear negative effects were exerted on bivalves by this drug.

Extracellular polymeric substances alter cell surface properties, toxicity, and accumulation of arsenic in Synechocystis PCC6803

Arsenic (As) contamination of water poses severe threats to human health and thus requires effective remediation methods. In this study, Synechocystis PCC6803, a model cyanobacterium common in aquatic environments, was used to investigate the role of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in As toxicity, accumulation, and transformation processes. We monitored the growth of Synechocystis with As exposure, measured the zeta potential and binding sites on the cell surface, and analysed As accumulation and speciation in Synechocystis cells with and without EPS. After EPS removal, the binding sites and zeta potential of the cell surface decreased by 44.43% and 31.9%, respectively. The growth of Synechocystis decreased 49.4% and 43.7% with As^(III) and As^(V) exposure, and As accumulation in the cells decreased by 12.8-44.5% and 14-42.7%, respectively. As absorption was enhanced in cells with EPS removed. The oxidation of As^(III) and reduction of As^(V) were significantly greater in cells with intact EPS compared to those with EPS removed. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that functional groups of EPS and Synechocystis cells, including -NH, -OH, CO, and CC, interacted with As species. Together the results of this work demonstrate that EPS have significant impacts on cell surface properties, thereby affecting As accumulation and transformation in Synechocystis PCC6803. This work provides a basis for using EPS to remedy As pollution in aquatic environments.

Accumulation of Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn and total P from synthetic stormwater in 30 bioretention plants

The uptake and distribution of four heavy metals, including copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn), and those of total phosphorus (TP) in 30 plants in North China were investigated through pot trial experiments. Accumulation and distribution of heavy metals or TP were associated with plant species, tissues, metal elements and pollutant loading. The highest amount of heavy metal and TP accumulation was found in the whole plants of Hylotelephium erythrostictum (Miq.) H. Ohba (C1) and Chlorophytum laxum R. Br. (L4), respectively. Considering the biological concentration factor, translocation factor, retention factor and biomass indices, C1 is the suitable plant for Cd and Cu uptake, whereas Hosta plantaginea (Lam.) Aschers (L3) and Viola verecunda A. Gray (V1) are the suitable plants for Pb removal. Rehmannia glutinosa (Gaetn.) Libosch. ex Fisch. (S1) and L4 can be chosen for Zn and TP removal, respectively. Cluster analysis was applied to select suitable plants for heavy metal and TP removal. Results showed that C1, L4 and Pennisetum alopecuroides (L.) Spreng (G1) have a good capability of accumulating heavy metals and TP. Results demonstrated that the plant species rather than the families considerably influenced the accumulation of pollutants.

Soil accumulation and chemical fractions of Cu in a large and long-term coastal apple orchard, North China

PURPOSE

Coastal orchards, with greater humidity and precipitation, are favorable for fruit production, as well as mildew fungi development, thus becoming hot spots of Cu concentrations in soils due to the use of copper-based fungicides. However, little is known on the variation tendencies of Cu availability and mobility from these soils. This study aims to investigate the accumulation, spatial-temporal distribution, and chemical fractions of soil Cu in one of the largest coastal apple-producing area with over 40-year intensive cultivation in China.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 104 orchard and 31 farmland topsoil samples were collected from Jiaodong Peninsula, Shandong Province. The total Cu concentration (T-Cu) and major element components (MnO, TiO₂, SiO₂, Fe₂O₃, and Al₂O₃) in the soil were determined by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Available Cu concentration (A-Cu) was extracted with HCl or DTPA. Chemical fractionations of Cu were determined via sequential extraction method. The variation tendencies of T-Cu, A-Cu, Cu available ratio (AR), and chemical fractions with planting duration in the orchards were explored while a cokriging method was selected to predict their spatial distributions. Moreover, Pearson's correlation and multiple linear stepwise regressions were constructed to distinguish the vital factors in controlling Cu availability and mobility from these soils.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The results showed that long-term application of Cu-containing fungicides had increased Cu concentrations in orchard soils (85.77 mg kg^-1) 3.5 times higher than the background value (24.0 mg kg^-1) of local agricultural soils, in which 23.8% existed in the available form. Cu in the weak acid-soluble fraction (F1, 5.0 ± 3.5 %), reducible fraction (F2, 24.7 ± 6.6%), and oxidizable fraction (F3, 18.5 ± 7.8%) in orchard soils increased significantly with increasing planting durations whereas the residual fraction (F4, 51.7 ± 15.4%) exhibited a reverse trend. Total content, available content, and chemical fractions of Cu showed strong spatial heterogeneity. The availability and mobility of Cu in orchard soils were mainly controlled by total Cu content, pH, and soil organic carbon.

CONCLUSIONS

Coastal orchards under warm and humid climate condition in China exhibited higher Cu input, along with acidification and rapid organic carbon turnover in the soils, eventually leading to large accumulation and high mobility of Cu in the soils.

Metal element alteration in the lung by cisplatin and CV247 administration

Despite significant nephrotoxicity, cisplatin is still used in the therapy of various tumors. We were interested in how metal ion composition is altered by cisplatin and whether platinum accumulates in the non-tumorous lung. We also aimed to study metal ion changes after treatment with a veterinary medicament CV247 with antioxidant property (containing Cu and Mn gluconate, ascorbic acid, Na salicylate), and whether CV247 alters pulmonary platinum accumulation in the healthy lung. Male Wistar rats were randomly selected into 4 groups (n = 10/group): control group, cisplatin-treated group, CV247-treated group, cisplatin + CV247-treated group. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and mass spectrometry were used for measuring Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Pt, S, Sb, Se, Sn, Sr, and Zn in the lung and the redox state was measured in the plasma. Cisplatin influenced the element homeostasis in the lung. Pt, Mn, Se accumulation and Ca, Mg excretion were observed after treatment with cisplatin. The antioxidant CV247 supplementation modified the Mn concentration; however, the concentration of Cu did not change despite the Cu content of the product, and CV247 did not affect other metal concentrations in the lung of the cisplatin-treated group. In conclusion, cisplatin has a systemic impact on the metal element metabolism, and this effect was demonstrated in the healthy lung, too. The results indicate the importance of supplementing some essential elements, such as Ca and Mg during cisplatin cancer therapy.

Biochar-induced immobilization and transformation of silver-nanoparticles affect growth, intracellular-radicles generation and nutrients assimilation by reducing oxidative stress in maize

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are used in a wide range of consumer products inevitably releases in massive quantities in the natural environment, posing a potential thread to ecosystem-safety and plant health. Here, the impact of AgNPs (100-1000 mg L^-1) without and with biochar (@2 % w/v) amendment on maize plants was assessed in hydroponics exposure medium. AgNPs exposure to plants induced dose-dependent phytotoxicity by suppressing plant growth, disturbing photosynthesis and gas exchange traits and alteration in macro- and micronutrients assimilation. At the same time, AgNPs with addition of biochar alleviated the phyto-toxic effects of AgNPs through approximately 4-8 times reduction in uptake and tissue accumulation of Ag. Moreover, activities of antioxidant enzymes in AgNPs + biochar treated plants indicated the lower oxidative stress. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy confirmed that superoxide (O₂^-) radical was the dominant reactive oxygen species. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) results revealed that biochar surface carboxyl and sulfur functional groups were involved in complexation process with NPs, which inhibited the oxidative dissolution and release of Ag⁺ ions besides of biochar space shield effect. Thus, the interaction of biochar with AgNPs immobilizes these NPs and can effectively reduce their bioavailability in the environmental matrix.
