Abstract
Two of the three homothallic genes, HM alpha and HMa, showed direct linkage to the mating-type locus at approximately 73 and 98 strans (57 and 65 centimorgans [cM], respectively, whereas, the other, HO, showed no linkage to 25 standard markers distributed over 17 chromosomes including the mating-type locus. To determine whether the HM alpha and HMa loci located on the left or right side of the mating-type locus, equations for three factor analysis of three linked genes were derived. Tetrad data were collected and were compared with expected values by chi 2 statistics. Calculations indicated that the HM alpha gene is probably located on the right arm at 95 strans (65 cM) from the centromere and the HMa locus at approximately 90 strans (64 cM) on the left arm of chromosome III.

Abstract
RT and its left/right difference of both biceps muscles were measured by electromyogram (EMG) in the bilateral simultaneous flexion of elbows using 11 left- and 13 right-handed subjects under four conditions which were combinations of two factors; warning signal; presence or absence of a fore-period, and position of limbs; elbow 90 degrees or 135 degrees. EMG-RT and its left/right difference were influenced by these factors. The effects of warning and position of limbs were not the same on the preferred and non-preferred hands. It was assumed that EMG-RTs of biceps in the preferred hand were less influenced by these experimental conditions.

Abstract
Recessive mutants defective in the formation of non-specific alkaline phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.1) could be selected by staining colonies on a plate with p-nitrophenylphosphate after treatment with chloroform vapour. Since no complementation was observed among the nine mutants so far tested, all the mutations might occur in the same locus, phoH. The non-specific alkaline phosphatase was repressible, although a significant basal level of the enzyme activity was observed in the repressed condition.

Abstract
Genetic data suggesting the absence of crossover in Saccharomycodes ludwigii have been described. Tetrad data obtained from 888 asci from 60 pairs of genes with 22 genetic markers showed the absence of tetratype asci, except for 5 asci in which a single pair of alleles showed tetratype segregation to the other genetic markers in each ascus. Spore arrays in the linear asci showed that the + - + - and + - - + (or - + + -) asci occurred at almost equal frequencies. The two coherent spores at each end of an ascus were always marked with different alleles of a gene.

Abstract
Two new classes of mutants containing recessive constitutive mutations, phoT and phoU, that affect the repressible acid phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.2) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae were isolated along with many previously known phoR mutants. These loci segregated independently from each other, from the phoS gene, and from another regulatory gene, phoD, that exerts positive control for acid phosphatase synthesis. The phoR and phoU mutations showed the same genetic behavior in the double mutants, which also contained the phoS or phoD mutation. In contrast, the phoT mutation could not suppress the phoS mutation, which caused a loss of enzyme activity. Many mutant alleles of phoR and phoU were found to be temperature sensitive (ts), whereas those of phoT were not. These ts mutants were constitutive at 35 C but severely repressible at 25 C. These facts strongly suggest that both the phoR and phoU genes are cooperatively concerned with the production of the repressor, whereas the phoT gene might be involved in another mechanism distinct from that in which phoR and phoU are involved. No single mutation of phoR, phoT, or phoU result in an enzyme level comparable to that of fully derepressed enzyme activities, and the temperature sensitivity of the ts phoR and ts phoU mutations in such combinations almost disappeared. In addition to these observations, since the ts phoR phoS and ts phoU phoS double mutants showed some enzyme synthesis at 25 C under derepressing conditions, a defect in the ts mutant repressors was strongly suggested, even at 25 C.

Abstract
Using 7 left- and 7 right-handed subjects, the difference in time between left and right arms in the initiation of bilateral simultaneous flexion of elbows (synchronization error) was measured under three conditions: response to a sound stimulus with a warning signal, response to a sound stimulus without a warning signal, and self-initiated trial (option). The absolute value of synchronization errors depended upon experimental conditions. In conditions 'with warning' and 'option' the dominance shown in performance of left-handed subjects was the mirror-image of that shown by the right-handed subjects. The right biceps muscle responded faster in left-handed subjects and vice versa. Right-handed subjects showed rather a constant value in their dispersion of synchronization errors.

Abstract
An apparent operator-constitutive mutation was discovered in the repressible acid phosphatase system in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The site of mutation, designated PHOO, was found to be closely linked to the phoD locus. The mutant allele, PHOO, was semidominant over the wild-type allele and effective for the expression of the phoD gene in cis position. The phoD mutation gave rise to a defective phenotype for the formation of the repressible acid phosphatase. On the other hand, neither the repressible acid phosphatase activity in the cell-free extracts prepared from cells of the temperature-sensitive phoD mutant grown at 25 C, nor that of the revertants from the phoD mutants, could be distinguished from that of the wild-type strain with respect to thermolability and K(m) value for p-nitrophenylphosphate. These results strongly suggest that the phoD gene is not a structural gene, but a regulatory gene exerting positive control for the formation of repressible acid phosphatase. Close similarity between the apparent role of the phoO-PHOD gene cluster and that of the c-GAL4 gene cluster in the galactose system of S. cerevisiae could be inferred.

Abstract
There are four types of life cycles in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and its related species. A perfect homothallic life cycle (the Ho type) is observed in the classic D strain. Two other types show semi-homothallism; one of them shows a 2-homothallic diploid:2alpha heterothallic haploid segregation (the Hp type) and another, a 2-homothallic:2a segregation (the Hq type). In the segregants from these Ho, Hp, and Hq diploids, each homothallic segregant shows the same segregation pattern as its parental diploid. The fourth type has a heterothallic life cycle showing a 2a:2alpha segregation and the diploids are produced by the fusion of two haploid cells of opposite mating types. The diploids prepared by the crosses of alpha Hp (an alpha haploid segregant from the Hp diploid) to a Hq (an a haploid from the Hq diploid) segregated two types (Type I and II) of the Ho type homothallic clone among their meiotic segregants. Genetic analyses were performed to investigate this phenomenon and the genotypes of the Ho type homothallic clones of Type I and Type II. Results of these genetic analyses have been most adequately explained by postulating three kinds of homothallic genes, each consisting of a single pair of alleles, HO/ho, HMalpha/hmalpha, and HMa/hma, respectively. One of them, the HMalpha locus, was proved to be loosely linked (64 stranes) to the mating-type locus. A spore having the HO hmalpha hma genotype gives rise to an Ho type homothallic diploid (Type I), the same as in the case of the D strain which has the HO HMalpha HMa genotype (Type II). A spore having the a HO hmalpha HMa or alpha HO HMalpha hma genotype will produce an Hp or Hq type homothallic diploid culture, respectively. The other genotypes, a HO HMalpha hma, alpha HO hmalpha HMa, and the genotypes combined with the ho allele give a heterothallic character to the spore culture. A possible molecular hypothesis for the mating-type differentiation with the controlling elements produced by the HMalpha and HMa genes is proposed.

Abstract
Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain H-42 seems to have two kinds of acid phosphatase: one which is constitutive and one which is repressible by inorganic phosphate. The constitutive enzyme was significantly unstable to heat inactivation, and its K(m) of 9.1 x 10(-4)m for p-nitrophenylphosphate was higher than that of the repressible enzyme (2.4 x 10(-4)m). The constitutive and the repressible acid phosphatases are specified by the phoC gene and by the phoB, phoD, or phoE gene, respectively. Results of tetrad analysis suggested that the phoC and phoE genes are linked to the lys2 locus on chromosome II. Since both repressible acid and alkaline phosphatases were affected simultaneously in the phoR, phoD, and phoS mutants, it was concluded that these enzymes were under the same regulatory mechanism or that they shared a common polypeptide. The phoR mutant produced acid phosphatase constitutively, and the phoR mutant allele was recessive to its wild-type counterpart. The phoS mutant showed a phenotype similar to that of a mutant defective in one of the phoB, phoD, or phoE genes. However, the results of genetic analysis of the phoS mutant clearly indicated that the phoS gene is not a structural gene for either of the repressible acid and alkaline phosphatases, but is a kind of regulatory gene. According to the proposed model, the phoS gene controls the expression of the phoR gene, and inorganic phosphate would act primarily as an inducer for the formation of the phoR product which represses phosphatase synthesis.
