Abstract
Splenic lymphoma with villous lymphocytes (SLVL) is a monoclonal B-lymphoproliferative disorder characterised by splenomegaly and distinctive villous lymphocytes in the peripheral blood. It has not previously been reported from Africa, but we describe ten Ghanaian patients with SLVL seen at one hospital during a 4-year period. The clinical presentation is similar in Africa and in temperate regions, though the lymphocyte count is higher in African patients and the disorder predominantly affects middle-aged women rather than elderly men. It is likely that SLVL has previously been classified as splenic chronic lymphocytic leukaemia or hyper-reactive malarial splenomegaly.

Abstract
Nonrandom translocations with breakpoint at band q21 on chromosome 18 might cause bcl-2 gene deregulation and might contribute to neoplastic transformation in human lymphomas. As the pattern of expression of bcl-2 in hematopoietic cells is still unclear, we have measured the level of the corresponding messenger RNA (mRNA) in a variety of myeloid and lymphoid cell malignancies not usually associated with the t(14;18) translocation. Molecular genetic analysis showed that bcl-2 was rearranged in only 2 of 77 patients: one was affected by hairy cell leukemia and one by diffuse small cleaved cell lymphoma with peripheral blood invasion. Although in rare cases of myeloid leukemia fairly high levels can be found, the expression of bcl-2 appears to be typical of certain lymphoid malignancies. High levels of bcl-2 mRNA had been found, previously, in established pre-B-cell lines. However, in fresh specimens, the peak level of bcl-2 expression shifts to a more differentiated cell type, represented by the long-living B lymphocytes that are found in most cases of chronic lymphocytic leukemia. bcl-2 gene product might have a role in prolonging cell survival and, even in the absence of translocations, might contribute to some of the biologic features that are typical of this disorder.

Abstract
Immunoreactive erythropoietin levels were measured in 42 patients with lymphoid malignancies with anaemia and bone marrow involvement. Results were compared to a control group of 16 patients suffering from anaemia due to other causes. Significant inverse correlations between serum erythropoietin level and haemoglobin concentration were shown for the patients with lymphoid malignancies and also for the control subjects. Overall, the erythropoietin levels of patients with lymphoid malignancies with bone marrow infiltration and with normal renal function did not differ significantly from erythropoietin levels of the anaemic controls. We conclude that anaemia in patients with lymphoproliferative disorders with bone marrow infiltration and normal renal function is caused primarily by a diminished/inadequate response to erythropoietin at the level of the target cell.

Abstract
Recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF) was administered (1.5 micrograms/kg body weight) subcutaneously once daily for 5 to 9 days to 5 patients with malignant lymphoma. In all patients, initial administration of rhG-CSF induced a rapid fall in the neutrophil count within 30 minutes, followed by a recovery and an increase in the neutrophil count within 150 min. A rapid fall in the neutrophil count was accompanied by increased expression of neutrophil C3bi-receptors, and neutrophils left in the circulation had lower activity of neutrophil alkaline phosphatase (NAP) and phagocytosis. A decrease in the NAP scores observed at 30 min reflected a preferential decrease of neutrophils with high NAP activity. A recovery and an increase in the neutrophil count were accompanied by a further decrease of NAP scores, which was caused by a preferential increase of neutrophils with lower NAP activity. The NAP scores of mature neutrophils from peripheral blood were not affected by in vitro treatment of cells with rhG-CSF for up to 150 min at 37 degrees C. These findings and the previous observations that neutrophils in the circulating and marginal pools have high NAP activity and neutrophils in the bone marrow pool have low NAP activity taken together suggest that, following initial administration of rhG-CSF, functionally active neutrophils leave the bloodstream preferentially, which is primarily followed by an influx of neutrophils from the bone marrow, but not by demargination of sequestered neutrophils.

Abstract
Forty patients with different varieties of leukaemia and lymphoma were studied before and after therapy. Red cells and lymphocytes from each patient were tested for foetal antigen by lectin-agglutination test. The antigen was detectable on red cells in all untreated cases, the highest titre being found in chronic myeloid leukaemia. The titre showed significant reduction after treatment in all cases. We conclude that foetal antigen on red cells is a useful diagnostic aid in haematological malignancy and is a good indicator of the outcome of therapy.

Abstract
Reactive thrombocytosis due to malignancies and in particular those related to lymphomas have not yet been extensively evaluated. We report data on thrombocytosis recognized in 18 out of 101 patients with lymphomas diagnosed in our department over the last 3 years. All showed high platelet counts at the time of diagnosis. The incidence of thrombocytosis seems to be more frequent in males (21.2%) than in females (14.8%) and a slightly higher frequency was found in Hodgkin's disease (21.4%) than in non Hodgkin's lymphomas (16.4%). The incidence of thrombocytosis in lymphomas seems to be similar to that seen in other malignancies and because of this we conclude that a high platelet count cannot be used to distinguish malignancies.

Abstract
Sera of 84 patients with Hodgkin's disease (HD) and 55 patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) were examined for the presence of autoantibodies to ssDNA, dsDNA, Poly (I), Poly (G), cardiolipin, histones, RNP. Sm, Ro (SS/A), La (SS/B) and the common anti-DNA idiotype (16/6) using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Anti-ssDNA antibodies were detected in the sera of 20 patients with lymphoma (23.8%), more among those with NHL than HD (16 vs. 4 patients p < 0.01). Anti-RNP and anti-Sm antibodies were found in 16 (21.7%) and 14 lymphoma patients (20%) respectively, significantly more than in the controls (p < 0.05) in both antibodies). These findings remained valid following subgrouping of the patients into those with HD and NHL. With all the other autoantibodies examined no significant difference could be observed in the incidence between lymphoma patients and controls. These results differ from our previous survey carried out on sera of patients with solid tumors in whom no increased frequency of any of the autoantibodies could be determined. In view of the evidence suggesting an increased risk of lymphoma in a number of autoimmune diseases our results extend this relationship to an increased incidence of autoantibodies among patients with lymphoma.

Abstract
Glycosylated and total serum ferritin levels were monitored in patients with acute leukemia and lymphoma undergoing bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Serum ferritin was high in relapsing patients and normal in most patients in complete remission (CR). In patients with an uncomplicated course, levels of ferritin increased during the first month after BMT with subsequent decrease. Three patients with lymphoma and five with acute leukemia had high serum ferritin levels despite achieving apparent complete hematological remission which was of short duration. The results were compared with groups of lymphoma patients at presentation and during remission and with healthy normal controls. In all the lymphoma patients and in 3 of the 5 leukemia patients the percent of ferritin glycosylation was normal at CR. It was low at the time of diagnosis in all patients. Thus, the percent glycosylation proved a more reliable marker for clinical remission than total serum ferritin. During follow up after BMT in uncomplicated cases, the percent of glycosylated ferritin returned to normal levels earlier than the total serum ferritin. These findings indicate that the evaluation of the amount of glycosylated ferritin may provide useful information in hematological patients in whom there is a discrepancy between high serum ferritin levels and the clinical condition.

Abstract
Hematopoietic recovery kinetics were evaluated in 34 children with therapy-refractory malignant tumors who underwent a total of 35 peripheral blood stem cell autografts (PBSCT) after marrow-ablative chemotherapy without total body irradiation. A negative correlation was found between the numbers of colony-forming units of granulocyte-macrophage (CFU-GM) infused per kilogram of the patients' body weight and the time of achieving an absolute granulocyte count (AGC) of 0.5 x 10(9)/l or a platelet count of 50 x 10(9)/l (granulocyte: r = -0.631, p less than 0.001, platelet: r = -0.590, p less than 0.001). The patients were classified into three groups; 14 patients who received less than 1 x 10(5) CFU-GM/kg (group A), 7 patients who received 1-3 x 10(5) CFU-GM/kg (group B), and 14 patients who received greater than or equal to 3 x 10(5) CFU-GM/kg (group C). The AGC recovered to 0.5 x 10(9)/l by 21 day in group A, 14 day in group B, and 10 day in group C. The platelet count recovered to 50 x 10(9)/l 102 in group A, 23 in group B, and 16 day in group C patients. The final platelet infusion was on day 60 in group A, day 12 in group B, and day 12 in group C. Transient decrease in the blood cell count developed in all patients 3 to 7 weeks after transplantation, and two cases developed reversible ITP. Abstract
Galactosyltransferase activities in sera of cancer patients were determined by assaying the formation of paragloboside from UDP-galactose and lactotriaosylceramide immobilized on microtiter plates by means of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using a monoclonal antibody, H-11, directed to paragloboside. Enzyme properties were as follows. Optimum pH was 6.8 in cacodylate buffer, and Km values were 2 microM for lactotriaosylceramide and 29 microM for UDP-galactose. The enzyme activity was inhibited by the addition of alpha-lactalbumin. Glucose (20 mM) inhibited the enzyme activity in the presence of alpha-lactalbumin (0.1 mg/ml) but not in its absence. These enzyme properties are similar to those of bovine milk galactosyltransferase, indicating that the enzyme in the sera might be lactose synthetase. The enzyme activities in sera from patients with cancer, patients with benign disease, or a reference sample group were assayed. The activity was below the limit of detection (5.5 pmol/25 microliters serum/2 h) in the reference sample group. Remarkable elevations of the enzyme activity were observed with high incidence in patients with cancer, especially those with blood cancer (100%). A high incidence was observed in the progressive stage, and the enzyme activity was detected at stage 1 in lung, esophagus, stomach, colorectal, and testis cancer. The enzyme activity in sera from patients with benign disease was elevated in 22% of the patients. After effective therapies, the enzyme activity decreased to below the limit of detection. Release of the galactosyltransferase into culture medium of cancer cells could be demonstrated. These observations suggest that the galactosyltransferase is released from cancer tissue into the circulation. The present method for the assay of galactosyltransferase may be useful for the detection of patients with cancer and for monitoring neoplastic recurrence after therapy.

Abstract
Ten healthy dogs and 10 dogs with multicentric lymphoma were given a single dose of L-asparaginase at a rate of 10,000 IU/m2 of body surface. Assessment of concentrations of contributors to the coagulation process and of the ability to coagulate including antithrombin III, one-stage prothrombin time, prothrombin-proconvertin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, plasminogen, fibrinogen, and platelet number were performed prior to drug administration (day 0). These tests were repeated 24 hours (day 1), 48 hours (day 2), and 7 days after treatment with L-asparaginase. Antithrombin-III concentrations were significantly lower in the dogs with lymphoma than in healthy dogs on days 0, 1, 2, and 7; however, with the exception of day 1, mean values remained within normal limits. There was also a difference between the 2 groups in prothrombin/proconvertin values on day 7 and in platelet number on day 2, with the lymphoma group having significantly shorter prothrombin/proconvertin time than healthy dogs, and the difference in platelet numbers being associated with increased counts in the healthy dogs. Data obtained from the healthy dogs and dogs with lymphoma for each coagulation test were pooled for each treatment day (0, 1, 2, and 7), and day-0 values for each coagulation test were compared with data obtained on days 1, 2, and 7. Antithrombin-III concentration on day 7 was significantly lower than on day 0, prothrombin/proconvertin time on day 1 was significantly longer than on day 0, and fibrinogen concentrations on days 1 and 2 were significantly lower than on day 0.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Colony-stimulating activity (CSA) in the serum of patients with hematological malignancies increased substantially after intensive therapy with cyclophosphamide/busulfan, cyclophosphamide/total body irradiation, or melphalan/total body irradiation. This was not dependent on patients receiving allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (ABMT) or autologous bone marrow rescue (ABMR). In 44 of 62 patients CSA was maximum approximately 7 days after chemotherapy/radiotherapy, whereas in 18 of 62 patients CSA was maximum between 9 and 20 days after therapy and decreased thereafter. The time course of CSA was not dependent on disease and was not affected by recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (rhGM-CSF) given as a continuous infusion for 14 days after therapy; however, serum from patients receiving rhGM-CSF produced significantly more colonies from donor bone marrow than serum from patients who did not receive the cytokine (p = 0.013). Despite the early peak in CSA in the majority of patients, there was no correlation between the time at which CSA was maximum and the return of patients' neutrophils to 500/microliters. Recombinant human interleukin 4 (IL-4) increased the number of granulocyte-macrophage colony-forming unit colonies, principally granulocyte colony-forming unit colonies, from normal bone marrow exposed to patients' serum after intensive therapy and antibody to GM-CSF reduced colony numbers. The results suggest that after intensive therapy granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) as well as GM-CSF is released into the serum and, in addition to acting directly with G-CSF, IL-4 may stimulate mononuclear cells to produce and/or release G-CSF.

Abstract
We studied serum lipid and lipoprotein changes occurring during chemotherapy in 57 patients with chemosensitive cancers, including 18 malignant lymphomas, 18 breast carcinomas, 14 small-cell lung carcinomas, and 7 urothelial-cell carcinomas. Patients who responded favorably to chemotherapy demonstrated a significant increase in serum total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol values, with the singular exception of breast-cancer patients, who exhibited a nonsignificant decrease in both of these parameters. Serum levels of free cholesterol and HDL cholesterol did not show any significant changes. Finally, serum triglycerides tended to increase after effective chemotherapy, but this was of statistical significance only in breast-cancer patients. Although our findings were based on a rather small number of patients, they indicate that the lipid and lipoprotein disorders reported in cancer patients are reversible by effective treatment of the tumor, suggesting that these disorders are a secondary phenomenon of malignancy.

Abstract
Sixty patients with malignancy were enrolled in a study of high-dose chemotherapy and peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT). Stem cells were harvested prior to PBSCT using high-dose cyclophosphamide (CY) mobilization (4 or 7 g/m2) with collection of a median of 4.6 x 10(8)/kg mononuclear cells (range 0.2-9.5) and 21.6 x 10(4)/kg colony forming unit-granulocyte/macrophage (CFU-GM) (range 0.1-220). Forty-seven patients were mobilized once, 11 required two cycles and two required three cycles. Eight patients (13%) failed to reach the optimum CFU-GM target (greater than 15 x 10(4)/kg) following CY mobilization. A number of factors identified those patients who were likely to achieve optimum CFU-GM collections with CY mobilization. These included the use of the higher CY mobilization dose, a longer interval from last chemotherapy cycle to mobilization, and a higher premobilization bone marrow CFU-GM level. Patient's age, the degree of bone marrow infiltration, the nature of disease or the number of pre-mobilization chemotherapeutic cycles did not affect the ability to collect optimum CFU-GM numbers. Whilst the mobilization procedure was associated with moderate non-hematologic toxicity, significant hematological morbidity was observed primarily in patients mobilized using the 7 g/m2 dose. Refinements to the protocol, in particular the use of hematopoietic growth factors, are currently under investigation.

Abstract
The pharmacokinetic profile of mitoxantrone in a patient undergoing hemodialysis is described. Significant characteristics of our patient included lymphoma with liver involvement, tumor lysis syndrome, renal and hepatic failure. Combination chemotherapy consisted of mitoxantrone, vincristine, and cyclophosphamide. Mitoxantrone plasma samples were obtained prior to dosing and at 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.5, 7.0, and 12 h after the intravenous infusion of a 17-mg dose over 20 min. Serum concentrations were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. The serum concentration versus time curve was consistent with a three-compartment model. However, rebounds in serum drug concentrations were detected during the last portion of dialysis and after its completion. The gamma elimination half-life could not be determined due to the continued detection of rebounds in drug concentrations throughout the postdialysis sampling period. The alpha and beta distribution phases did not appear to be affected by hemodialysis. The peak mitoxantrone concentration fell within the reported range. Mitoxantrone does not appear to be eliminated by hemodialysis, and dose adjustments are not needed in patients undergoing this procedure.

Abstract
Activation of T cells is associated with a dramatic increase in expression of the interleukin-2 receptor. In addition to the intact receptor found at the cell surface, activated T cells produce a truncated form of the receptor (sIL-2R) that is secreted as a soluble molecule. Patients with neoplastic disease or diseases involving immune activation exhibit markedly elevated serum levels of sIL-2R. Although the functional significance of sIL-2R is unknown, the ability to measure this parameter rapidly and accurately in serum samples makes it a potentially useful index for monitoring disease activity. Recent studies indicate that a rise in serum levels of sIL-2R in apparently healthy individuals could be an important early signal of neoplastic, autoimmune, or inflammatory disease. Moreover, subsequent to diagnosis, serum levels of sIL-2R appear to be a reliable indicator of tumor burden and therapeutic response for many patients with leukemia and lymphoma, an indicator of metastasis for patients with solid tumors, and an indicator of exacerbation and clinical response in patients with diseases associated with immune activation.

Abstract
The clinical studies about the electrolyte abnormality (EA) in patients with malignant lymphoma (ML) are rarely reported. We analyzed the EA and renal insufficiency in 123 patients with ML between June. 1976 and Jan. 1989; 8 patients with Hodgkin's disease, and 115 patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Before treatment, the incidence of the EA was 24.2% and hypercalcemia, hypocalcemia, and hyperkalemia were predominant. After treatment it became to 74.7% and the number of hyponatremia and hypokalemia increased. The incidence of proteinuria and renal insufficiency (serum creatinine above 1.5 mg/dl), were 7.3% and 2.4% before treatment, and became to 26.8% and 26.8% after treatment, respectively. There was a significant difference between two groups with and without the EA before treatment as for serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels (p less than 0.01), clinical stages (p less than 0.05) and the incidence of bone marrow involvement (p less than 0.01). In 34 autopsied cases, 3 cases showed massive renal involvement and about a half of cases showed various renal changes. The EA before treatment was caused by extrarenal factors, because the incidence of proteinuria and renal insufficiency were almost same to healthy controls. And renal factors play an important role on the E.A after treatment. Above results suggest that the EA before treatment indicates the progress of malignant lymphoma and the EA after treatment means not only the progress of the disease but also therapy-related renal damages.

Abstract
In order to evaluate precisely the fibrinolytic states in clinical disorders, plasma levels of D dimer (cross-linked fibrin degradation products) were measured by a newly developed, rapid quantitative method based on the latex photometric immunoassay in patients with hematological malignancies, diabetes mellitus, collagen disease, liver disease, thrombotic disease and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Plasma levels of D dimer were elevated in a variety of diseases, especially in DIC. Patients with hematological malignancies, liver disease and thrombotic disease also had relatively high levels of D dimer. On the whole, D dimer values were positively correlated with plasmin-alpha 2-plasmin inhibitor complex and thrombin-antithrombin III complex. In addition, plasma D dimer was measured during fibrinolytic therapy with urokinase or tissue-type plasminogen activator; its elevation was detected in some patients. These findings indicate that accelerated fibrinolysis is frequently observed in a variety of diseases, and that a rapid quantitative measurement of D dimer would be valuable for the precise assessment of fibrinolysis in these disease states.

Abstract
Impaired fibrinolysis often is found in patients with deep-vein thrombosis. Deep-vein thrombosis is seen in some patients with malignant conditions. In patients with malignant conditions, impaired fibrinolysis may be present and may contribute to the development of thrombotic complications. In this study, the extrinsic fibrinolytic system was evaluated in a group of patients with malignant conditions and compared to a positive control group of patients with history of thrombosis but with no malignant condition and also to a negative control group of normal subjects. The group of patients with malignant conditions had plasminogen activator inhibitor levels similar to those patients with a history of thrombosis. Both of these groups had higher plasminogen activator inhibitor levels than the normal control patients.

Abstract
We observed significantly reduced serum alpha 2-HS glycoprotein concentrations in patients with acute lymphocytic, acute nonlymphocytic, chronic granulocytic and chronic myelomonocytic leukemias, Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, myelofibrosis, and multiple myeloma, but not in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia and polycythemia vera, as compared with healthy controls. We followed the serum level of the protein for 18 months. Patients with infectious complications, those receiving cytostatic treatment, and those in the preterminal period had further reduced serum alpha 2-HS glycoprotein levels. The reduction of serum alpha 2-HS glycoprotein concentration was primarily due to decreased production caused by infiltration of the liver, a hepatotoxic effect of cytostatic treatment, and, to a lesser degree, to increased consumption. We found statistically significant negative correlations between serum alpha 2-HS glycoprotein concentration and erythrocyte sedimentation rate, serum aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase activities, and IgG and IgM concentrations. The determination of the alpha 2-HS glycoprotein concentration is useful for the assessment and follow-up of the clinical status and therapy of patients with hematological malignancies and also has prognostic significance.

Abstract
Ten patients given HLA-identical sibling marrow transplants for lymphoid malignancy received recombinant human granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) from day 7 to day 13 inclusive post transplant. Patients were prepared for transplantation with busulphan 16 mg/kg and cyclophosphamide 120 mg/kg. Immunosuppression to minimise the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) was cyclosporin/short methotrexate. Results were compared with a historical control group of patients (n = 16) given matched sibling transplants for acute leukaemia and receiving the same immune suppressive regime but not given GM-CSF. Recovery of total white cells, neutrophils, monocytes and lymphocytes was more rapid in the GM-CSF recipients (p less than 0.02). There was a suggestion of a decrease in non-viral infections in the first 30 days in the GM-CSF recipients (p = 0.09). There was, however, no significant difference in the severity of oropharyngeal mucositis nor in the duration of the transplant hospitalisation. Surprisingly, the severity of acute GVHD was higher in the GM-CSF recipients with six of eight evaluable patients having grade II-IV acute GVHD (p = 0.003). Two GM-CSF recipients developed a fluid retention/capillary leak syndrome. These findings indicate a need for caution in the use of GM-CSF after allogeneic marrow transplantation.

Abstract
The rate of HbF was studied in 123 children with different malignancies in order to assess its changes and relationship with other values of peripheral blood. The cases were distributed into 34 with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), 19 with acute myelogenous leukaemia (AML), 23 cases of Hodgkin's disease (HD), 16 of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and 31 of different solid tumors (ST). ALL and AML groups had the highest HbF rates (2.88 +/- 1.93% and 2.63 +/- 2.7%, respectively), followed by HD and NHL (1.89 +/- 1.09% and 1.81 +/- 1.68%, respectively), whereas the ST group showed the lowest values (1.32 +/- 1.74%). When comparing these figures with the findings in a group of adult leukaemia and lymphoma (1.6 +/- 0,7% and 1.2 +/- 0.5%, respectively), it was found that HbF was increased in the children to a higher extent. The analysis of the gamma G and gamma A chains of HbF, performed on 14 of the patients, showed in 7 cases a correlation similar to the newborn pattern, while this was similar to the adults in the remainders. These findings suggest that some factors intrinsic to the neoplasm might favour, in a different degree, the re-expression of HbF, which, in turn, would not necessarily mean a reversion to the foctal stages since the correlation of the gamma chains was similar to the adult pattern in 50% of the cases studied.

Abstract
Evidence has accumulated that human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) may release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and endorphin-like peptides into the culture medium when stimulated with different substances such as Newcastle disease virus and the lipopolysaccharide of Escherichia coli. However, to our knowledge, no quantitative assessment of ACTH-LIR (like-immunoreactivity) in human PBMC has been reported. We thus utilized a radioimmunoassay for ACTH to find a median of 30 pg of ACTH-LIR in 10(7) PBMC of 11 normal subjects. ACTH-LIR was also detected in 7 different cell lines derived from patients with lymphoid and myeloid malignancies, two of them, JM and U937, showed values of 135 and 108 pg/10(7) cells respectively. Stimulation with IL-1 beta at the concentration of 1000 U/mL induced, after 48 h, a significant increase of intralymphocytic ACTH levels when compared to basal and 24 h values. The chromatographic characterization of this ACTH-LIR showed, at least, three molecular forms of immunoreactive ACTH; molecular weights were 31 kD POMC, 22 kD ACTH and 4.5 kD ACTH. We used northern blotting with human genomic DNA probe for POMC gene to evidence specific mRNA in PBMC; mRNA was also observed in a T lymphocyte cell line derived from a patient with lymphoma. We conclude that PBMC produce ACTH-LIR which may act as a paracrine immunomodulator similar to lymphokine and/or may signal the adrenal gland to secrete glucocorticoids.

Abstract
AKR/O mice were used as a model for studying the pathogenesis of the anaemia accompanying leukaemia/lymphoma. The leukaemia incidence was 87%. Median age at diagnosis was 11.3 months. At diagnosis most of the mice had normal leukocyte counts. Clinically the mice divided into subgroups depending on the relative organ involvement: 1) thymoma group (n = 98), 2) spleen group (n = 144), 3) combined group (n = 27) and 4) mice with moderate organ changes (n = 216). Mice of group 1 were younger than the others, had a rapidly progressive disease, normal to elevated packed cell volume (PCV), and plasma erythropoietin (Epo) was normal or increased. Mice of group 2 were usually anaemic with high plasma Epo estimates and often elevated reticulocyte counts. Group 4 was the oldest group. Some of these mice were severely affected haematologically. Overall there was an inverse relation between PCV and plasma Epo estimate, indicating a normal Epo response to anaemia. In all groups increasing spleen size was associated with increased severity of anaemia and increased reticulocyte counts. The association between anaemia, elevated reticulocyte counts and spleen enlargement suggests haemolysis as a mechanism for anaemia, and also raises the question of compensatory spleen erythropoiesis.

Abstract
Out of the blood calcium fractions know only the ionized calcium is biologically active. From the height of the total calcium level despite significant dependence no secure conclusion to the Ca++ concentration can be drawn. The level of the total calcium spreads further than that one of the ionized calcium. The up to now used mathematical approaches for the estimation of the blood Ca++ concentration also proved unsuitable; none of them provides a really better statement than the total calcium level. Thus even they represent no acceptable alternative to the Ca++ determination by means of ion-selective electrodes. The investigation by means of ion-selective electrodes. The investigation of various paraclinical sizes (total calcium, total protein, albumin, creatinine, alkaline phosphatase) in a group of patients and a control group in quality and quantity resulted in a different influence on the Ca++ level by the influential factors tested. Only by measurement of the ionized calcium the real actual condition of the calcium homoeostasis can be reflected. Therefore it is no more justified to draw diagnostically and therapeutically relevant consequences from the exclusive determination of the total calcium level.
