Abstract
Artificially designed transcription activator-like effector (TALE) proteins fused to a transcription activation domain (TAD), such as VP64, are able to activate specific eukaryotic promoters. They thus provide a good tool for targeted gene regulation as a therapy. However, the efficacy of such an agent in vivo remains to be demonstrated as the majority of studies have been carried out in cell culture. We produced an adeno-associated virus 9 (AAV9) coding for a TALEfrat#8 containing 13 repeat variable diresidues able to bind to the proximal promoter of human frataxin (FXN) gene. This TALEfrat#8 was fused with a 3XFLAG at its N terminal and a VP64 TAD at its C terminal, and driven by a CAG promoter. This AAV9_3XFLAG-TALEfrat#8-VP64 was injected intraperitoneally to 9-day-old and 4-month-old YG8R mice. After 1 month, the heart, muscle and liver were removed and their FXN mRNA and FXN protein were analyzed. The results show that the AAV9_3XFLAG-TALEfrat#8-VP64 increased the FXN mRNA and FXN protein in the three organs studied. These results corroborate our previous in vitro studies in the FRDA human fibroblasts. Our study indicates that an AAV coding for a TALE protein coupled with a TAD may be used to increase gene expression in vivo as a possible treatment not only for FRDA but also for other haploinsufficiency diseases.

Abstract
The classical mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) ERK1 and ERK2 are activated upon stimulation of cells with a broad range of extracellular signals (including antigens) allowing cellular responses to occur. ERK3 is an atypical member of the MAPK family with highest homology to ERK1/2. Therefore, we evaluated the role of ERK3 in mature T cell response. Mouse resting T cells do not transcribe ERK3 but its expression is induced in both CD4⁺ and CD8⁺ T cells following T cell receptor (TCR)-induced T cell activation. This induction of ERK3 expression in T lymphocytes requires activation of the classical MAPK ERK1 and ERK2. Moreover, ERK3 protein is phosphorylated and associates with MK5 in activated primary T cells. We show that ERK3-deficient T cells have a decreased proliferation rate and are impaired in cytokine secretion following in vitro stimulation with low dose of anti-CD3 antibodies. Our findings identify the atypical MAPK ERK3 as a new and important regulator of TCR-induced T cell activation.

Abstract
Cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYPs) and flavin-containing monooxygenases (FMOs) likely have a role in the oxidation of intermediate metabolites of busulfan (Bu). In vitro studies to investigate the involvement of these enzymes are cumbersome because of the volatile nature of the intermediate metabolite tetrahydrothiophene (THT) and the lack of sensitive quantitation methods. This study explored the association between the CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP2B6 and FMO3 genotypes and sulfolane (Su, a water soluble metabolite of Bu) plasma levels in children undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The relationship between these genotypes and the effectiveness of myeloablative conditioning was also analyzed. Sixty-six children receiving an intravenous Bu-based myeloablative conditioning regimen were genotyped for common functional variant alleles in CYP2C9 (*2 and *3), CYP2C19 (*2 and *17), FMO3 (rs2266780, rs2266782 and rs1736557) and CYP2B6 (*5 and *9). The plasma levels of Bu and its metabolite Su were measured after the ninth Bu dose in a subset of 44 patients for whom plasma samples were available. The ratio of Bu to Su was considered the metabolic ratio (MR) and was compared across the genotype groups. Higher MRs were observed in CYP2C9*2 and *3 allele carriers (mean±s.d.: 7.8±3.6 in carriers vs 4.4±2.2 in non-carriers; P=0.003). An increased incidence of graft failure was observed among patients with an MR>5 compared with those with MR values <5 (20% vs 0%; P=0.02). In contrast, a significantly higher incidence of relapse and graft failure (evaluated as event-free survival) was observed in patients with malignant disease who carried CYP2B6 alleles with reduced function on both chromosomes compared with carriers of at least one normal allele (100% vs 40%; P=0.0001). These results suggest that CYP2C9 has a role in the oxidation reactions of THT and indicate that it may be possible to predict the efficacy of Bu-based myeloablative conditioning before HSCT on the basis of CYP genotypes and Bu MRs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND 'Haircut-associated bleeding' is a newly recognized entity that affects at least a quarter of African men who wear shiny clean-shave ('chiskop') haircuts. AIM This pilot study aimed to elucidate whether invisible haircut-associated bleeding was detectable using blood specific RNA markers (16 participants, 5 with unknown HIV status) and whether surface virus could be detected using PCR from scalp swabs (of 11 known HIV-positive participants). METHODS Haircuts were performed professionally and scalps examined by a dermatologist to exclude injury. Serum samples for viral loads were also collected at the same time. RESULTS In all, 6/16 (37%) samples tested positive (>100 relative fluorescent units) for hemoglobin beta and albumin, confirming evidence of blood; of these, only 1/11 was HIV-positive but had an undetectable serum viral load. No surface HIV was detected from any scalp samples. CONCLUSIONS This study confirms the entity of haircut-associated bleeding but goes further to show for the first time that invisible bleeding from clean-shave haircuts is also common. Both a high serum viral load and evidence of bleeding should ideally be present prior to surface HIV detection. Future investigations for potential HIV (and hepatitis B) transmission through clean-shave haircuts are warranted but should not delay public education for disease prevention.

Abstract
Affinity purification combined with tandem mass spectrometry (AP-MS/MS) is a well-established method used to discover interaction partners for a given protein of interest. Because most AP-MS/MS approaches are performed using the soluble fraction of whole cell extracts (WCE), information about the cellular compartments where the interactions occur is lost. More importantly, classical AP-MS/MS often fails to identify interactions that take place in the nonsoluble fraction of the cell, for example, on the chromatin or membranes; consequently, protein complexes that are less soluble are underrepresented. In this paper, we introduce a method called multiple cell compartment AP-MS/MS (MCC-AP-MS/MS), which identifies the interactions of a protein independently in three fractions of the cell: the cytoplasm, the nucleoplasm, and the chromatin. We show that this fractionation improves the sensitivity of the method when compared to the classical affinity purification procedure using soluble WCE while keeping a very high specificity. Using three proteins known to localize in various cell compartments as baits, the CDK9 subunit of transcription elongation factor P-TEFb, the RNA polymerase II (RNAP II)-associated protein 4 (RPAP4), and the largest subunit of RNAP II, POLR2A, we show that MCC-AP-MS/MS reproducibly yields fraction-specific interactions. Finally, we demonstrate that this improvement in sensitivity leads to the discovery of novel interactions of RNAP II carboxyl-terminal domain (CTD) interacting domain (CID) proteins with POLR2A.

Abstract
The differential diagnosis for intense hypermetabolic mediastinal lesions on positron emission tomography (PET) could benefit from the combined morphological and metabolic information present in a fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/CT study. We report a case of an infected tracheal diverticulum mimicking an FDG-avid malignancy in a patient with a history of chronic lymphoproliferative disease. We review the literature for a systematic approach in the differential diagnosis of cystic mediastinal lesions. The embryological development of the normal tracheobronchial tree is reviewed, followed by a presentation of various congenital and acquired mediastinal lesions. The characteristic CT findings are described for each lesion and the avidity for FDG on PET is mentioned when references are available. This case emphasises that complicated benign processes should be considered in the differential diagnosis of an FDG-avid mediastinal lesion, even in subgroups of patients with significant risk factors for malignancy.

Abstract
Mutations in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) are either inducing a nonsense codon or a frameshift. Meganucleases (MGNs) can be engineered to induce double-strand breaks (DSBs) at specific DNA sequences. These breaks are repaired by homologous recombination or by non-homologous end joining (NHEJ), which results in insertions or deletions (indels) of a few base pairs. To verify whether MGNs could be used to restore the normal reading frame of a dystrophin gene with a frameshift mutation, we inserted in a plasmid coding for the dog micro-dystrophin sequences containing a MGN target. The number of base pairs in these inserted sequences changed the reading frame. One of these modified target micro-dystrophin plasmids and an appropriate MGN were then transfected in 293FT cells. The MGN induced micro-deletion or micro-insertion in the micro-dystrophin that restored dystrophin expression. MGNs also restored micro-dystrophin expression in myoblasts in vitro and in muscle fibers in vivo. The mutation of the targeted micro-dystrophin was confirmed by PCR amplification followed by digestion with the Surveyor enzyme and by cloning and sequencing of the amplicons. These experiments are thus a proof of principle that MGNs that are adequately engineered to target appropriate sequences in the human dystrophin gene should be able to restore the normal reading frame of that gene in DMD patients with an out-of-frame deletion. New MGNs engineered to target a sequence including or near nonsense mutation could also be used to delete it.

Abstract
During the 15th International Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Workshop (IHIWS), 14 human leukocyte antigen (HLA) laboratories participated in the Analysis of HLA Population Data (AHPD) project where 18 new population samples were analyzed statistically and compared with data available from previous workshops. To that aim, an original methodology was developed and used (i) to estimate frequencies by taking into account ambiguous genotypic data, (ii) to test for Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) by using a nested likelihood ratio test involving a parameter accounting for HWE deviations, (iii) to test for selective neutrality by using a resampling algorithm, and (iv) to provide explicit graphical representations including allele frequencies and basic statistics for each series of data. A total of 66 data series (1-7 loci per population) were analyzed with this standard approach. Frequency estimates were compliant with HWE in all but one population of mixed stem cell donors. Neutrality testing confirmed the observation of heterozygote excess at all HLA loci, although a significant deviation was established in only a few cases. Population comparisons showed that HLA genetic patterns were mostly shaped by geographic and/or linguistic differentiations in Africa and Europe, but not in America where both genetic drift in isolated populations and gene flow in admixed populations led to a more complex genetic structure. Overall, a fruitful collaboration between HLA typing laboratories and population geneticists allowed finding useful solutions to the problem of estimating gene frequencies and testing basic population diversity statistics on highly complex HLA data (high numbers of alleles and ambiguities), with promising applications in either anthropological, epidemiological, or transplantation studies.

Abstract
REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an emerging equine and zoonotic pathogen. Infection control protocols can be used to control MRSA in human hospitals, but measures to eradicate MRSA on horse farms have not been evaluated. OBJECTIVES To describe an MRSA eradication programme that was used to attempt to eliminate MRSA colonisation among horses and horse personnel on 2 equine farms. METHODS Active surveillance cultures and infection control protocols were implemented on 2 farms with endemic MRSA. RESULTS Active screening and strict implementation of infection control protocols resulted in a rapid decrease in number of colonised horses on both farms. The majority of horses eliminated MRSA without antimicrobial treatment. On one farm colonisation was eradicated, while only 2 (3%) colonised horses remained on the other farm at the end of the study. CONCLUSIONS Although at this stage the benefit of eradication of MRSA from populations of horses and cost-benefit studies have not been established, this study illustrates that short-term eradication can be achieved with a policy of segregation, enhanced infection control precautions and repeated testing of groups of animals. POTENTIAL RELEVANCE Infection control practices should form the basis of MRSA control. Antimicrobial therapy does not appear to be required for eradication of MRSA colonisation in horses and control of MRSA on farms. In appropriate circumstances, these methods may be useful for controlling the spread of this potentially serious pathogen.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Many algorithms exist for 3D reconstruction of data from freehand 2D ultrasound slices. These methods are based on interpolation techniques to fill the voxels from the pixels. For quantification purposes, segmentation is involved to delineate the structure of interest. However, speckle and partial volume effect errors can affect quantification. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the effect of the combination of a fuzzy model and 3D reconstruction algorithms of freehand ultrasound images on these errors. METHODS We introduced a fuzzification step to correct the initial segmentation, by weighting the pixels by a distribution function, taking into account the local gray levels, the orientation of the local gradient, and the local contrast-to-noise ratio. We then used two of the most wide-spread reconstruction algorithms (pixel nearest neighbour (PNN) and voxel nearest neighbour (VNN)) to interpolate and create the volume of the structure. Finally, defuzzification was used to estimate the optimal volume. VALIDATION B-scans were acquired using 5 MHz and 8 MHz ultrasound probes on ultrasound tissue-mimicking phantoms. Quantitative evaluation of the reconstructed structures was done by comparing the method output to the real volumes. Comparison was also done with classical PNN and VNN algorithms. RESULTS With the fuzzy model quantification errors were less than 4.3%, whereas with classical algorithms, errors were larger (10.3% using PNN, 17.2% using VNN). Furthermore, for very small structures (0.5 cm(3)), errors reached 24.3% using the classical VNN algorithm, while they were about 9.6% with the fuzzy VNN model. CONCLUSION These experiments prove that the fuzzy model allows volumes to be determined with better accuracy and reproducibility, especially for small structures (<3 cm(3)).

Abstract
Tumor development in bone is often associated with fractures, bone loss and bone pain, and improvement is still needed in therapeutic approaches. Bone tumors are related to the existence of a vicious cycle between bone resorption and tumor proliferation in which the molecular triad osteoprotegerin (OPG)/receptor activator of NF-kappaB (RANK)/RANK ligand (RANKL) plays a pivotal role. RANKL, a member of the TNF superfamily, is one of the main inducers of bone resorption. Its soluble receptor OPG represents a promising therapeutic candidate as it prevents bone lesions and inhibits associated tumor growth. However, its therapeutic use in bone tumors remains controversial due to its ability to bind and inhibit another member of the TNF superfamily, TNF related apoptosis inducing ligand (TRAIL), which is a potent inducer of tumor cell apoptosis. Through its heparin binding domain, OPG is also able to bind proteoglycans present in the bone matrix. This paper is an overview of the involvement of the micro-environment, as represented by the balance of RANKL/TRAIL and the presence of proteoglycans in the regulation of OPG biological activity in bone tumors.

Abstract
Duchenne muscular dystrophy is caused by the absence of functional dystrophin, leading to the myofiber membrane instability and progressive muscle atrophy. Myoblast transplantation in dystrophic muscles is a potential therapy, as it permits the long-term restoration of dystrophin expression in transplanted muscles. However, the success of this approach is limited by the short period of muscle repair following myoblast transplantation. Myostatin, a powerful inhibitor of muscle growth, is involved in terminating the period of muscle repair following injury by reducing myoblast proliferation and differentiation. Follistatin forms a complex with myostatin, preventing its interaction with its receptor and thus blocking the myostatin signal. Here, we used a lentivirus to overexpress the follistatin protein in normal myoblasts to block the myostatin signaling. We measured the potential of transduced myoblasts to proliferate and to form multinucleated myotubes in vitro. And finally, we considered the engraftment success of those transduced myoblasts in comparison with control cells in vivo within SCID mice TA muscle. Our results first confirmed the overexpression of follistatin into lentivirus transduced myoblasts, and second showed that the overexpression of the follistatin in normal human myoblasts improved in vitro their proliferation rate by about 1.5-fold after 96 h and also their differentiation rate by about 1.6- and 1.8-fold, respectively, in the absence and in the presence of recombinant myostatin. Finally, our data demonstrated that the engraftment of human normal myoblasts overexpressing the follistatin protein into SCID mouse muscles was enhanced by twofold.

Abstract
The authors have previously evaluated a new method of volume reconstruction and quantification from MR images, based on fuzzy logic (FL) principles. The technique is evaluated here for larger and more complex structures by investigating its accuracy and robustness using MR and CT images. Four large (50-71 cm(3)) and complex (e.g. mimicking a prostate) structures were created and imaged on MR and CT scanners, both with increasing slice thickness. Contours were delineated to generate 112 volumes. MR and CT images were processed using the FL method and a "classical" method of reconstruction on research software. In addition, the CT images were also processed on commercial virtual simulation software. Calculated volumes were compared with actual volumes. The mean +/- standard deviation of the relative variations in calculated target volume using the FL method was found to be 4.4%+/-2.8%, whereas with the "classical" method it was 23.7%+/-6% from axial MR images and 23.3%+/-9.8% from CT images. With the "classical" method, the relative variations in calculated volumes rise with increasing slice thickness, and the displayed volumes show deformations in the longitudinal direction. With the FL method, the volume calculation is not sensitive to the slice thickness and so the deformations are minimal. When used with MR images, our FL method of volume reconstruction is accurate and robust with respect to changes in slice thickness. For CT images, the results are encouraging but some work is still needed to improve the accuracy of the FL method.

Abstract
The authors have developed a simple phantom and dedicated software for the quality assessment of positron emission tomography (PET) scanners. The phantom is a parallelepiped box filled with a relatively low activity 18FDG solution and in which simple test objects are placed. Various image quality parameters are checked, including signal-to-noise ratio, image uniformity, slice thickness, slice sensitivity profile, spatial resolution, and dose calibration accuracy. Automatic image analysis consists in detecting surfaces and objects, defining regions of interest, acquiring reference point coordinates, and establishing gray-scale profiles. The total time needed for quality assessment (preparation and image acquisition) is less than 15 min with 37 MBq (1 mCi) 18FDG. The system's ease of use encourages frequent image quality assessment-for example, the comparison of PET scanners in interdepartment studies and the monitoring and evaluation of possible drifts over time. By way of an example, the authors present weekly quality assessment results obtained over up to 7 months at four PET facilities.

Abstract
Mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases are typical examples of protein kinases whose enzymatic activity is mainly controlled by activation loop phosphorylation. The classical MAP kinases ERK1/ERK2, JNK, p38 and ERK5 all contain the conserved Thr-Xxx-Tyr motif in their activation loop that is dually phosphorylated by members of the MAP kinase kinases family. Much less is known about the regulation of the atypical MAP kinases ERK3 and ERK4. These kinases display structural features that distinguish them from other MAP kinases, notably the presence of a single phospho-acceptor site (Ser-Glu-Gly) in the activation loop. Here, we show that ERK3 and ERK4 are phosphorylated in their activation loop in vivo. This phosphorylation is exerted, at least in part, in trans by an upstream cellular kinase. Contrary to classical MAP kinases, activation loop phosphorylation of ERK3 and ERK4 is detected in resting cells and is not further stimulated by strong mitogenic or stress stimuli. However, phosphorylation can be modulated indirectly by interaction with the substrate MAP kinase-activated protein kinase 5 (MK5). Importantly, we found that activation loop phosphorylation of ERK3 and ERK4 stimulates their intrinsic catalytic activity and is required for the formation of stable active complexes with MK5 and, consequently, for efficient cytoplasmic redistribution of ERK3/ERK4-MK5 complexes. Our results demonstrate the importance of activation loop phosphorylation in the regulation of ERK3/ERK4 function and highlight differences in the regulation of atypical MAP kinases as compared to classical family members.

Abstract
PURPOSE An automatic segmentation tool of pelvic structures from MRI images for prostate cancer radiotherapy was developed and dosimetric evaluation of differences of delineation (automatic versus human) is presented here. MATERIALS AND METHODS CTV, rectum and bladder were defined automatically and by a physician in 20 patients. Treatment plans based on "automatic" volumes were transferred on "manual" volumes and reciprocally. Dosimetric characteristics of PTV (V(95), minimal, maximal and mean doses), rectum (V(50), V(70), maximal and mean doses) and bladder (V(70), maximal and mean doses) were compared. RESULTS Automatic delineation of CTV did not significantly influence dosimetric characteristics of "manual" PTV. Rectal V(50) and V(70) were not significantly different; mean rectal dose is slightly superior (43.2 versus 44.4Gy, p=0.02, Student test). Bladder V(70) was significantly superior too (19.3 versus 21.6, p=0.004). Organ-at-risk (OAR) automatic delineation had little influence on their dosimetric characteristics; rectal V(70) was slightly underestimated (20 versus 18.5Gy, p=0.001). CONCLUSION CTV and OAR automatic delineation had little influence on dosimetric characteristics. Software developments are ongoing to enable routine use and interobserver evaluation is needed.

Abstract
The value of MRI in defining target volumes and organs at risk is established. Numerous difficulties appear to stand in the way of using MRI alone in dose planning, with the result that this imaging modality is used in most cases in conjunction with computerized X-ray tomography (CT). The aim of this paper is to appreciate these difficulties: geometrical distortion, chemical shifts, dosimetric accuracy. Geometrical distortion measurements were carried out on two 1.5 T MR scanners and the effect of chemical shift and magnetic susceptibility were evaluated in volunteers. The effect on dosimetric calculations of uncertainty in determining electron densities was evaluated too. Geometrical distortion remained at small values: less than 2 mm and 3 mm for field of view of 20 cm and 45 cm. The chemical shift and magnetic susceptibility values obtained, ranging from 0.3 to 3 mm, were well below the theoretical values. The assignment of relative electron densities to only two structures in MR images seems to permit dose planning that is identical with that obtained with CT. None of the technical obstacles mentioned represents a stumbling block. The access to MRI facility could represent a persisting problem.

The method introduced in this paper is based on previous works in MRA segmentation and involves both fuzzy set and possibility theories. Abstract
Due to its excellent soft tissue contrast and lack of ionizing radiation, MR imaging is well suited for interventional procedures. MRI is being increasingly used for guidance during percutaneous procedures or surgery. Technical advances in interventional MR imaging are reviewed in this paper. Ergonomical factors with improved access to patients as well as advances in informatics, electronics and robotics largely explain this increasing role. Different elements are discussed from improved access to patients in the scanners to improved acquisition pulse sequences. Selected clinical applications and recent publications will be presented to illustrate the current status of this technique.

Abstract
Synchrotron stereotactic radiotherapy (SSR) is a radiotherapy technique that makes use of the interactions of monochromatic low energy x-rays with high atomic number (Z) elements. An important dose-enhancement can be obtained if the target volume has been loaded with a sufficient amount of a high-Z element, such as iodine. In this study, we compare experimental dose measurements, obtained with normoxic polymer gel (nPAG), with Monte Carlo computations. Gels were irradiated within an anthropomorphic head phantom and were read out by magnetic resonance imaging. The dose-enhancement due to the presence of iodine in the gel (iodine concentration: 5 and 10 mg ml(-1)) was measured at two radiation energies (35 and 80 keV) and was compared to the calculated factors. nPAG dosimetry was shown to be efficient for measuring the sharp dose gradients produced by SSR. The agreement between 3D gel dosimetry and calculated dose distributions was found to be within 4% of the dose difference criterion and a distance to agreement of 2.1 mm for 80% of the voxels. Polymer gel doped with iodine exhibited higher sensitivity, in good agreement with the calculated iodine-dose enhancement. We demonstrate in this preliminary study that iodine-doped nPAG could be used for measuring in situ dose distributions for iodine-enhanced SSR treatment.

Abstract
Seventy-five percent of the myoblasts transplanted in the mouse muscle die during the first 4 days following transplantation. The purpose of this study was to determine if anoikis plays a role in this phenomenon. Survival and proliferation of myoblasts in vitro were determined by Hoescht-PI labeling and cell counts respectively. In vivo cell survival and proliferation were quantified by injecting human male myoblasts labeled with (14)C-thymidine in SCID mouse muscles. Survival and proliferation of the transplanted myoblasts were evaluated by scintigraphy and quantitative PCR of human Y chromosomal DNA. Inclusion of the extracellular matrix protein fibronectin enhanced transplanted myoblast survival by 1.7-fold while vitronectin improved their proliferation by 1.8-fold. Reductions in FADD and Bit1 expression reduced anoikis in vitro and improved the injected myoblast survival in vivo. Ectopic expression of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 completely abolished myoblast anoikis in vitro and enhanced cell survival by 3.1-fold in vivo. Cell death following transplantation appears to me mediated in part by anoikis. Inclusion of extracellular matrix proteins enhanced both survival and proliferation. Reduced expression of the proapoptotic proteins Bit1 and FADD or overexpression of Bcl-2 improved myoblast survival.

Abstract
Since the early 1990s, minimally invasive techniques have been increasingly used in ever more and diversified fields of application. These techniques have some shared characteristics (predominant role of medical imaging, intensive use of new communication technologies, a multidisciplinary medical and scientific framework, etc.) but also shared specific problems (high-tech tools unfamiliar to the medical users, a major and long period of time for technological development, unavailability of training systems, difficulties in obtaining regulatory approval). For a long time, our Laboratory of Medical Physics (U 703 Inserm) has developed an innovative research activity in biomedical engineering in the field of assisted therapy, medical imaging and medical simulation. This paper presents the general context of interventional therapy procedures assisted by image and simulation and describes our scientific activities based on realistic objectives close to medical practice.

Abstract
A new approach of registration in multimodal imaging has been developed. Modalities involved are Digital Subtracted Angiography (DSA, 2D) and Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA, 3D). Our approach is an hybrid one, mixing feature and intensity based approaches. This approach is based on the extraction of a anatomical referential common to both MRA and DSA. The results obtained prove the methods efficiency in a clinical context. This paper present the validation methodology to make it possible the replacement of the localization DSA examination by the diagnosis one, thus avoiding supplementary costs, lost time and medical hazards for the patient and for the medical staff.

Abstract
This paper describes a method to register ultrasound images (US) to pre-treatment images. The aim of the work is the information transfer between the pre-treatment imaging modality (MR or CT) and the intra-treatment imaging (US). Ultrasound images are spatially tracked by a stereo-vision system and the prostate boundaries are automatically extracted using a method that combines morphological and adaptive speckle suppression and a priori knowledge. MR/CT images are merged to construct a volume of pelvis using fuzzy logic algorithm and an MPR virtual slice corresponding to the orientation of the US image is generated from the volume. The prostate is segmented from the slice by a model-based method and rigidly registered by ICP algorithm to the US contour. Preliminary experiences gave satisfactory results with short computing time.

Abstract
To study the lung water clearance in vivo at the time of the birth, MR experiments were conducted on newborn lamb immediately after uterine incision deliverance. Images obtained with a fast spin echo sequence enable to quantify lung liquid each 5 minutes during 30 minutes then each 10 minutes for 1.5 hour. From the lung contours, pulmonary volume, pulmonary water, and spatial gradient of pulmonary water were studied. At 2 hours of life, the total pulmonary water content was still high and the liquid clearance was slower in the lower part of the lung. Air inflation increased the size of the distal airways and shifted liquid from the lung lumen towards the pulmonary interstitial tissue. The pulmonary water wash-out was belated and the passage to the aerial life was performed by progressive liberation of the superior pulmonary spaces, water flowing out by gravity toward the lower spaces.

Abstract
A new improving method to compute Spearman rank correlation test has been developed. This method is based on the use of a response to stimulation delay referred by many authors. Visual results tend to prove the method efficiency which is confirmed by obtained overlap rates; moreover this method can easily be adapted in a clinical context.

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate the prevalence of methicillin-resistant staphylococcal (MRS) colonization in clinically normal dogs and horses in the community. METHODS AND RESULTS Three hundred clinically normal horses and 200 clinically normal dogs were enrolled. One nasal swab was collected from each horse. Two swabs were taken from each dog: (i) from an anterior nare, and (ii) a combination of the perineal area and 0.5 cm into the anus. Enrichment cultures were performed. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was not identified. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus intermedius (MRSI) was isolated from the nasal swab from three dogs. Methicillin-resistant coagulase negative staphylococci (MRCoNS) were isolated from 126/300 (42%) horses and 26/200 (13%) dogs. CONCLUSIONS At present MRSI is not considered to be a significant zoonotic concern; however, it may become an important pathogen in dogs. MRCoNS mostly cause disease in compromised human or animal hosts. However, these bacteria can serve as reservoirs of resistance determinants in the community, which could lead to the emergence of novel MRSA strains. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This is the first report of the prevalence of MRS colonization in clinically normal dogs in a community setting. Continued surveillance is indicated to determine whether MRSA will emerge in the animal population and become a concern for animal disease and zoonotic infection.
