Abstract
Boron neutron capture therapy is a cellular-scale heavy-particle therapy. The factor determining the biological effects in the boron neutron capture reaction (BNCR) is the value of ${\alpha}_{boron}$, which is the alpha component in the Linear Quadratic (LQ) model. Recently, the factor determining the value of ${\alpha}_{boron}$ has been revealed to correspond to the structural features of the tumor tissue. However, the relationship and mechanism have yet to be thoroughly studied. In this study, we simulated BNCR in tissues using the Monte Carlo simulation technique and examined the factors that determine the value of ${\alpha}_{boron}$. According to this simulation, the nuclear-cytoplasmic (N/C) ratio, nuclear diameter and heterogeneity of the distribution of boron in the tissue have been suggested to determine the value of ${\alpha}_{boron}$. Moreover, we proposed Biological Effectivity (BE) as a new dosimetry index based on the surviving fraction (SF), extending the concept of absolute biological effectiveness (ABE) in a previous report.

Abstract
Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a non-invasive cancer treatment with little adverse effect utilizing nuclear fission of 10 B upon neutron irradiation. While neutron source has been developed from a nuclear reactor to a compact accelerator, only two kinds of drugs, boronophenylalanine and sodium borocaptate, have been clinically used for decades despite their low tumor specificity and/or retentivity. To overcome these challenges, various boron-containing nanomaterials, or "nanosensitizers", have been designed based on micelles, (bio)polymers and inorganic nanoparticles. Among them, inorganic nanoparticles such as boron carbide can include a much higher 10 B content, but successful in vivo applications are very limited. Additionally, recent reports on the photothermal effect of boron carbide are motivating for the addition of another modality of photothermal therapy. In this study, 10 B enriched boron carbide (10 B4 C) nanoparticle is functionalized with polyglycerol (PG), giving 10 B4 C-PG with enough dispersibility in a physiological environment. Pharmacokinetic experiments show that 10 B4 C-PG fulfills the following three requirements for BNCT; 1) low intrinsic toxicity, 2) 10 B in tumor/tumor tissue (wt/wt) ≥ 20 ppm, and 3) 10 B concentrations in tumor/blood ≥ 3. In vivo study reveals that neutron irradiation after intravenous administration of 10 B4 C-PG suppresses cancer growth significantly and eradicates cancer with the help of near-infrared light irradiation.

Abstract
Objectives To investigate the prevalence of post coronavirus disease (COVID-19) condition of the Omicron variant in comparison to other strains. Study design A single-center cross-sectional study. Methods Patients who recovered from Omicron COVID-19 infection (Omicron group) were interviewed via telephone, and patients infected with other strains (control group) were surveyed via a self-reporting questionnaire. Data on patients’ characteristics, information regarding the acute-phase COVID-19, as well as presence and duration of COVID-19-related symptoms were obtained. Post COVID-19 condition in this study was defined as a symptom that lasted for at least 2 months, within 3 months of COVID-19 onset. We investigated and compared the prevalence of post COVID-19 condition in both groups after performing propensity score matching. Results We conducted interviews for 53 out of 128 patients with Omicron and obtained 502 responses in the control group. After matching cases with controls, 18 patients from both groups had improved covariate balance of the factors: older adult, female sex, obesity, and vaccination status. There were no significant differences in the prevalence of each post COVID-19 condition between the two groups. The number of patients with at least one post COVID-19 condition in the Omicron and control groups were 1 (5.6%) and 10 (55.6%) (p = 0.003), respectively. Conclusions The prevalence of post Omicron COVID-19 conditions was less than that of the other strains. Further research with a larger sample size is needed to investigate the precise epidemiology of post COVID-19 condition of Omicron, and its impact on health-related quality of life and social productivity.

Abstract
Radiation-induced liver diseases, including liver fibrosis, occurs when radiation damages the liver. Basic research on hepatic fibrosis, which is a late radiation injury, is necessary for evaluating adverse liver events occurring after boron neutron capture therapy. This study was conducted to establish a method for analyzing the negative effect such as fibrosis in the liver tissue after boron neutron capture therapy. Female C57BL6 mice were injected with p-boronophenylalanine solution subcutaneously at 2 h before neutron irradiation. Masson trichrome staining was performed to determine the degree of liver fibrosis. The degree of fat accumulation in mouse normal liver tissue after boron neutron capture therapy was evaluated using hematoxylin and eosin staining and triglyceride quantification. Western blotting was performed to determine the expression level of Sonic Hedgehog. Liver fat accumulation and fibrosis were significantly increased in the neutron irradiation group injected with p-boronophenylalanine compared with control group. In addition, Sonic Hedgehog expression was increased in response to boron neutron capture therapy-induced liver injury and was involved in liver fibrosis. Hepatocellular fat accumulation and Hedgehog signaling activation may be indicators of adverse events related to boron neutron capture therapy associated with liver fibrosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE The prognostic value of F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) taken immediately after completion of radiotherapy in lung cancer patients is not well known. The purpose of this study is to assess the prognostic value of PET/CT taken immediately after completion of radiotherapy in lung cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients with primary lung cancer planned to undergo concurrent chemoradiotherapy were enrolled. Patients underwent PET/CT scans at 3 time points: before radiotherapy, within 24hours of completing radiotherapy (im-PET/CT), and 2-9 months after radiotherapy (post-PET/CT). Maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) was obtained. A post-PET/CT-SUVmax cut-off of 2.5 was determined as radiotherapy success. RESULTS Nineteen patients were enrolled. im-PET/CT-SUVmax for patients in the high post-PET/CT-SUVmax group was significantly higher than that of the low group (P=0.004). Receiver operator curve analysis indicated that im-PET/CT-SUVmax of 4.35 was an optimal cut-off value to discriminate between the two groups. Multivariable analysis showed that a high im-PET/CT-SUVmax was significantly associated with a high post-PET/CT-SUVmax (P=0.003). CONCLUSION PET/CT-SUVmax taken immediately following radiotherapy was associated with that evaluated 2-9 months after radiotherapy.

Abstract
We examined the chemical constitution of the red alga Laurencia saitoi Perestenko, collected from Katsuura, Boso Peninsula, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. This specimen produced a new polyhalogenated acetogenin, named katsuurallene (1), which structure was determined by the spectral methods, along with known diterpene, deoxyparguerol (2) and triterpene, thyrsiferol (3). In this paper we describe the structural elucidation of katsuurallene together with some biological activities.

Abstract
Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a non-invasive therapeutic technique for treating malignant tumors, however, methods to evaluate its therapeutic efficacy and adverse reactions are lacking. High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is an inflammatory molecule released during cell death. Therefore, we aimed to investigate HMGB1 as a biomarker for BNCT response, by examining the early responses of tumor cells to 10B-boronophenylalanine (BPA)-based BNCT in the Kyoto University Nuclear Reactor. Extracellular HMGB1 release was significantly increased in human squamous carcinoma SAS and melanoma A375 cells 24 h after neutron irradiation but not after γ-irradiation. At 3 days post-BPA-based BNCT irradiation in a SAS xenograft mouse model, plasma HMGB1 levels were higher than those in the non-irradiation control, and HMGB1 was detected in both nuclei and cytoplasm in tumor cells. Additionally, increased plasma HMGB1 levels post-BNCT irradiation were detected even when tumors decreased in size. Collectively, these results indicate that the extracellular HMGB1 release occurs at an early stage and is persistent when tumors are reduced in size; therefore, it is a potential biomarker for evaluating the therapeutic response during BNCT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Supplementation with 6 g/day of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) at dinnertime increases muscle function and cognition in frail elderly adults relative to supplementation with long-chain triglycerides. However, suitable timing of MCT supplementation during the day is unknown. DESIGN We enrolled 40 elderly nursing home residents (85.9 ± 7.7 years) in a 1.5-month randomized intervention trial. Participants were randomly allocated to two groups: one received 6 g/day of MCTs at breakfast (breakfast group) as a test group and the other at dinnertime (dinner group) as a positive control group. MEASUREMENTS Muscle mass, strength, function, and cognition were monitored at baseline and 1.5 months after initiation of intervention. RESULTS Thirty-seven participants completed the study and were included in the analysis. MCT supplementation in breakfast and dinner groups respectively increased right arm muscle area from baseline by 1.1 ± 0.8 cm2 (P<0.001) and 1.6 ± 2.5 cm2 (P<0.001), left arm muscle area by 1.1 ± 0.7 cm2 (P<0.001) and 0.9 ± 1.0 cm2 (P<0.01), right knee extension time by 39 ± 42 s (P<0.01) and 20 ± 32 s (P<0.05), leg open and close test time by 1.74 ± 2.00 n/10 s (P<0.01) and 1.67 ± 2.01 n/10 s (P<0.01), and Mini-Mental State Examination score by 1.5 ± 3.0 points (P=0.06) and 1.0 ± 2.1 points (P=0.06). These increases between two groups did not differ statistically significantly. CONCLUSION Supplementation with 6 g MCTs/day for 1.5 months, irrespective of ingestion at breakfast or dinnertime, could increase muscle mass and function, and cognition in frail elderly adults.

Background
At onset of acute heart failure (AHF), various clinical fundamental parameters including vital sign, laboratory data, or initial treatment were investigated, and we can roughly estimate the prognosis. However, machine learning method for prediction of the prognosis was not studied.
Purpose
To elucidate prognostic value of machine learning for AHF comparing conventional statistical model.
Methods
We enrolled consecutive 300 patients with AHF (79.5 ± 12.1 years, 158 Males). Patients with acute coronary syndrome, mechanical circulatory support cases, and cardio-pulmonary arrest cases were excluded. The patients were randomly divided into 80% (240 cases) and 20% (60 cases), and the former was used as train data, and the latter as validation data. Objective variable was set as cardiac death in one year. First, logistic regression analysis with Akaike’s information criterion (AIC) was performed, and extracted predictive parameters. The predictive model for the cardiac prognosis was constructed by cut-off value of ROC curve analysis of propensity score was calculated. Next, machine learning (random forest method and deep learning) to build predictive model was performed with the predictors. Finally, accuracy of each predictive model was compared.
Results
Thirty cases showed cardiac death in one year. Logistic regression with AIC extracted 8 predictors, and the cut off-value of propensity score with the 6 parameters was 0.110. The accuracy was 0.714 and area under ROC (AUROC) was 0.836. Conversely, random forest method demonstrated the accuracy as 0.927, AUROC 0.860. On deep learning, the accuracy was 0.937 and AUROC 0.901.
The top 4 high feature importance of random forest were Cl/red blood cell count/pH/Anion Gap. However, accuracy of those predictors was lower than that of machine learning.
Conclusion
Machine learning was a powerful tool to predict cardiac prognosis of AHF, comparing with conventional statistical model. Abstract Figure. Statistical model

Abstract
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically stable swirling spin textures that appear as particle-like objects in two-dimensional (2D) systems. Here, utilizing scalar magnetic X-ray tomography under applied magnetic fields, we report the direct visualization of the three-dimensional (3D) shape of individual skyrmion strings in the room-temperature skyrmion-hosting non-centrosymmetric compound Mn1.4Pt0.9Pd0.1Sn. Through the tomographic reconstruction of the 3D distribution of the [001] magnetization component on the basis of transmission images taken at various angles, we identify a skyrmion string running through the entire thickness of the sample, as well as various defect structures, such as the interrupted and Y-shaped strings. The observed point defect may represent the Bloch point serving as an emergent magnetic monopole, as proposed theoretically. Our tomographic approach with a tunable magnetic field paves the way for direct visualization of the structural dynamics of individual skyrmion strings in 3D space, which will contribute to a better understanding of the creation, annihilation and transfer of these topological objects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although boron neutron capture therapy has shown excellent survival data, previous studies have shown an increase in radiation necrosis against recurrent malignant glioma. Herein, we proposed that bevacizumab may reduce radiation injury from boron neutron capture therapy by re-irradiation. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of a boron neutron capture therapy and add-on bevacizumab combination therapy in patients with recurrent malignant glioma. METHODS Patients with recurrent malignant glioma were treated with reactor-based boron neutron capture therapy. Treatment with bevacizumab (10 mg/kg) was initiated 1-4 weeks after boron neutron capture therapy and was administered every 2-3 weeks until disease progression. Initially diagnosed glioblastomas were categorized as primary glioblastoma, whereas other forms of malignant glioma were categorized as non-primary glioblastoma. RESULTS Twenty-five patients (14 with primary glioblastoma and 11 with non-primary glioblastoma) were treated with boron neutron capture therapy and add-on bevacizumab. The 1-year survival rate for primary glioblastoma and non-primary glioblastoma was 63.5% (95% confidence interval: 33.1-83.0) and 81.8% (95% confidence interval: 44.7-95.1), respectively. The median overall survival was 21.4 months (95% confidence interval: 7.0-36.7) and 73.6 months (95% confidence interval: 11.4-77.2) for primary glioblastoma and non-primary glioblastoma, respectively. The median progression-free survival was 8.3 months (95% confidence interval: 4.2-12.1) and 15.6 months (95% confidence interval: 3.1-29.8) for primary glioblastoma and non-primary glioblastoma, respectively. Neither pseudoprogression nor radiation necrosis were identified during bevacizumab treatment. Alopecia occurred in all patients. Six patients experienced adverse events ≥grade 3. CONCLUSIONS Boron neutron capture therapy and add-on bevacizumab provided a long overall survival and a long progression-free survival in recurrent malignant glioma compared with previous studies on boron neutron capture therapy alone. The add-on bevacizumab may reduce the detrimental effects of boron neutron capture therapy, including pseudoprogression and radiation necrosis. Further studies of the combination therapy with a larger sample size and a randomized controlled design are warranted.

Abstract
The world’s population is aging, and intergenerational conflicts between older adults and young people are becoming more serious. This study focused on ageism as a cause of intergenerational conflicts and older adults’ diminished mental health status. We conducted an online survey of older Japanese participants (n = 1.096). Our results indicated that older adults who perceived more ageism directed toward them (1) had more negative attitudes toward young people and (2) had lower life satisfaction, which persisted even after controlling for variables such as old age identity and depressive tendencies. Accordingly, we suggest that ageism may reinforce intergenerational conflicts between older adults and young people and compromise older adults’ mental health status. The findings of this study can aid gerontological and psychological research aimed at reducing ageism.

Abstract
This study's objective was to explore the association between various factors and the increased caregiver burden of informal caregivers during the COVID-19 pandemic. On February, 2021, 700 informal caregivers completed an online survey. We assessed the change in caregiver burden during the COVID-19 pandemic. Among all caregiver participants, 287 (41.0%) complained of an increased caregiver burden due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The factors associated with increased caregiver burden were depressive symptoms in caregivers [odds ratio (OR), 2.20; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.50-3.23], dementia (OR, 2.48; 95%CI, 1.07-5.73) and low Barthel Index scores (OR, 2.01; 95%CI, 1.39-2.90) in care receivers, care days (OR, 1.09; 95%CI, 1.01-1.17) and times (OR, 1.06; 95%CI, 1.01-1.10), and use of home care service (OR, 1.46; 95%CI, 1.01-2.10) and visiting care service (OR, 1.71; 95%CI, 1.20-2.45). These findings suggest we need to pay attention to the physical and mental health of both the care receivers and caregivers.

Abstract
The aim of this study is the development of an irradiation method for the treatment of superficial tumours using a hydrogel bolus to produce thermal neutrons in accelerator-based Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT).To evaluate the neutron moderating ability of a hydrogel bolus, a water phantom with a hydrogel bolus was irradiated with an epithermal neutron beam from a cyclotron-based epithermal neutron source. Phantom simulating irradiation to the plantar position was manufactured using three-dimensional printing technology to perform an irradiation test of a hydrogel bolus. Thermal neutron fluxes on the surface of a phantom were evaluated and the results were compared with the Monte Carlo-based Simulation Environment for Radiotherapy Applications (SERA) treatment planning software. It was confirmed that a hydrogel bolus had the same neutron moderating ability as water, and the calculation results from SERA aligned with the measured values within approximately 5%. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the thermal neutron flux decreased at the edge of the irradiation field. It was possible to uniformly irradiate thermal neutrons by increasing the bolus thickness at the edge of the irradiation field, thereby successfully determining uniform dose distribution. An irradiation method for superficial tumours using a hydrogel bolus in the accelerator-based BNCT was established.

Abstract
Background: Re-irradiation had a higher rate of radiation injury because recurrent MG had already irradiated in the first-line treatment. Recently, combination therapy of re-irradiation and bevacizumab showed a lower incidence of radiation injury than re-irradiation alone. Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), a tumor-selective particle radiation therapy, also increased radiation injury for recurrent MG, despite the greater focus on tumor cells. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of BNCT plus bevacizumab with early induction after BNCT. Methods: Patients with recurrent MG were prospectively enrolled in this study. BNCT was performed using Kyoto University Research Reactor as a neutron source. Bevacizumab of 10 mg/kg was initiated 1–4 weeks after BNCT and was continued every 2–3 weeks until disease progression. Newly-diagnosed (de novo) glioblastoma was categorized as primary GBM (pGBM). Other MG were categorized as non-pGBM. Results: Kyoto University Research Reactor stopped irradiation for clinical use in February 2019. Twenty-five patients (14 pGBM and 11 non-pGBM) were treated with this combination therapy between June 2013 and February 2019. The median Overall survival (OS) after BNCT was 21.4 months for pGBM and 73.6 months for non-pGBM, respectively (p = 0.0428). The median progression-free survival (PFS) after BNCT was 8.3 months for pGBM and 15.6 months for non-pGBM, respectively (p = 0.0207). The objective response rate was 72 %. Alopecia occurred in all patients. Adverse events ≥ grade 3 were grade 3 proteinuria in four patients, grade 5 myocardial infarction in one patient, and grade 5 meningitis in one patient. Conclusion: BNCT plus bevacizumab showed a long OS and a long PFS, compared to our previous studies of BNCT alone for recurrent MG. Bevacizumab could provide beneficial effects not only for tumor itself, but also radiation injury. Further research with a larger sample using accelerator-based BNCT and bevacizumab is required to elucidate the efficacy and safety of this combination therapy.

Abstract
Background: High-dose methotrexate and whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT) is the recommended treatment for primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL). Although the initial treatment is successful, the recurrence rate is high and the prognosis is poor. Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a nuclear reaction-based tumor cell-selective particle irradiation that occurs when non-radioactive boron-10 is irradiated with neutrons to produce α particles (10B [n, α] 7Li). In this study, we conducted a basic research to explore the possibility of BNCT as a treatment option for PCNSL. Methods: Cellular uptake of boron using human lymphoma cell-lines after exposure to boronophenylalanine (BPA) were evaluated. The cytotoxicity of lymphoma cells by photon irradiation or neutron irradiation with BPA were also evaluated. The lymphoma cells were implanted into the mouse brain and the bio-distribution of boron after administration of BPA were measured. In neutron irradiation studies, the therapeutic effect of BNCT on mouse CNSL models were evaluated in terms of survival time. Results: The boron concentration in lymphoma cells after BPA exposure was sufficiently high, and lymphoma cells showed cytotoxicity by photon irradiation, and also by BNCT. In in vivo bio-distribution study, lymphoma cells showed enough uptake of BPA with well contrasted to the brain. In the neutron irradiation experiment, the BNCT group showed a significant prolongation in their survival time compared to the control group. Conclusions: In our study, BNCT showed its effectiveness for PCNSL in a mouse brain tumor model. PCNSL is a radio-sensitive tumor with a extremely good response rate, but it also has a high recurrence rate / a high rate of adverse events, so there is no effective treatment for recurrence after treatment. Our translational study showed that BNCT is possibly have an important role against PCNSL during the therapy lines as a new treatment option for PCNSL patients.

Abstract
Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a cancer treatment with clinically demonstrated efficacy using boronophenylalanine (BPA) and sodium mercaptododecaborate (BSH). However, tumor tissue selectivity of BSH and retention of BPA in tumor cells is a constant problem. To ensure boron accumulation and retention in tumor tissues, we designed a novel polyethylene glycol (PEG)-based boron-containing lipid (PBL) and examined the potency of delivery of boron using novel PBL-containing liposomes, facilitated by the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. PBL was synthesized by the reaction of distearoylphosphoethanolamine and BSH linked by PEG with Michael addition while liposomes modified using PBL were prepared from the mixed lipid at a constant molar ratio. In this manner, novel boron liposomes featuring BSH in the liposomal surfaces, instead of being encapsulated in the inner aqueous phase or incorporated in the lipid bilayer membrane, were prepared. These PBL liposomes also carry additional payload capacity for more boron compounds (or anticancer agents) in their inner aqueous phase. The findings demonstrated that PBL liposomes are promising candidates to effect suitable boron accumulation for BNCT.

Abstract
Objectives In Japan, several studies have reported no excess all-cause deaths (the difference between the observed and expected number of deaths) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020. This study aimed to estimate the weekly excess deaths in Japan's 47 prefectures for 2021 until June 27. Study design Vital statistical data on deaths were obtained from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan. For this analysis, we used data from January 2012 to June 2021. Methods A quasi-Poisson regression was used to estimate the expected weekly number of deaths. Excess deaths were expressed as the range of differences between the observed and expected number of all-cause deaths and the 95% upper bound of the one-sided prediction interval. Results Since January 2021, excess deaths were observed for the first time in the week corresponding to April 12–18 and have continued through mid-June, with the highest excess percentage occurring in the week corresponding to May 31–June 6 (excess deaths: 1431–2587; excess percentage: 5.95–10.77%). Similarly, excess deaths were observed in consecutive weeks from April to June 2021 in 18 of 47 prefectures. Conclusions For the first time since February 2020, when the first COVID-19 death was reported in Japan, excess deaths possibly related to COVID-19 were observed in April 2021 in Japan, during the fourth wave. This may reflect the deaths of non-infected people owing to the disruption that the pandemic has caused.

Background: Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a nuclear reaction-based tumor cell-selective particle irradiation method. High-dose methotrexate and whole-brain radiation therapy (WBRT) are the recommended treatments for primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL). This tumor responds well to initial treatment but relapses even after successful treatment, and the prognosis is poor as there is no safe and effective treatment for relapse. In this study, we aimed to conduct basic research to explore the possibility of using BNCT as a treatment for PCNSL. Methods: The boron concentration in human lymphoma cells was measured. Subsequently, neutron irradiation experiments on lymphoma cells were conducted. A mouse central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma model was created to evaluate the biodistribution of boron after the administration of borono-phenylalanine as a capture agent. In the neutron irradiation study of a mouse PCNSL model, the therapeutic effect of BNCT on PCNSL was evaluated in terms of survival. Results: The boron uptake capability of human lymphoma cells was sufficiently high both in vitro and in vivo. In the neutron irradiation study, the BNCT group showed a higher cell killing effect and prolonged survival compared with the control group. Conclusions: A new therapeutic approach for PCNSL is urgently required, and BNCT may be a promising treatment for PCNSL. The results of this study, including those of neutron irradiation, suggest success in the conduct of future clinical trials to explore the possibility of BNCT as a new treatment option for PCNSL.

Abstract
Introduction Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a biologically targeted, cell-selective particle irradiation therapy that utilizes the nuclear capture reaction of boron and neutron. Recently, accelerator neutron generators have been used in clinical settings, and expectations for developing new boron compounds are growing. Methods and Results In this study, we focused on serum albumin, a well-known drug delivery system, and developed maleimide-functionalized closo-dodecaborate albumin conjugate (MID-AC) as a boron carrying system for BNCT. Our biodistribution experiment involved F98 glioma-bearing rat brain tumor models systemically administered with MID-AC and demonstrated accumulation and long retention of boron. Our BNCT study with MID-AC observed statistically significant prolongation of the survival rate compared to the control groups, with results comparable to BNCT study with boronophenylalanine (BPA) which is the standard use of in clinical settings. Each median survival time was as follows: untreated control group; 24.5 days, neutron-irradiated control group; 24.5 days, neutron irradiation following 2.5 h after termination of intravenous administration (i.v.) of BPA; 31.5 days, and neutron irradiation following 2.5 or 24 h after termination of i.v. of MID-AC; 33.5 or 33.0 days, respectively. The biological effectiveness factor of MID-AC for F98 rat glioma was estimated based on these survival times and found to be higher to 12. This tendency was confirmed in BNCT 24 h after MID-AC administration. Conclusion MID-AC induces an efficient boron neutron capture reaction because the albumin contained in MID-AC is retained in the tumor and has a considerable potential to become an effective delivery system for BNCT in treating high-grade gliomas.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Tumor cell destruction by boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is attributed to the nuclear reaction between 10B and thermal neutrons. The accumulation of 10B atoms in tumor cells without affecting adjacent healthy cells is crucial for effective BNCT. We previously reported that several types of liposomal boron delivery systems (BDS) delivered effective numbers of boron atoms to cancer tissues, and showed tumor-growth suppression after thermal neutron irradiation. In the present study, we examined the effects of BNCT after intra-arterial infusion of 10B-borono-dodecaborate (10BSH) by liposomal BDS in rabbit hepatic cancer models. MATERIALS AND METHODS We prepared 10BSH-entrapped transferrin-conjugated polyethylene glycol liposomes constructed with distearoyl-boron lipid (TF-PEG-DSBL), and performed thermal neutron irradiation at the Kyoto University Institute for Integrated Radiation and Nuclear Science after intra-arterial infusion into rabbit VX-2 hepatic tumors. RESULTS Concentrations of 10B in VX-2 tumors on delivery with TF-PEG-DSBL liposomes reached 25 ppm on day 3 after the injection. Tumor growth was suppressed by thermal neutron irradiation after intra-arterial injection of this 10BSH-containing liposomal BDS, without damage to normal cells. CONCLUSION The present results demonstrate the applicability of 10B-containing TF-PEG-DSBL liposomes as a novel intra-arterial boron carrier in BNCT for cancer.

Abstract
It is well known that black and green tea extracts, particularly polyphenols, have antimicrobial activity against various pathogenic microbes including viruses. However, there is limited data on the antiviral activity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2), which emerged rapidly in China in late 2019 and which has been responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic globally. In this study, 20 compounds and three extracts were obtained from black and green tea and found that three tea extracts showed significant antiviral activity against SARS‐CoV‐2, whereby the viral titre decreased about 5 logs TCID50 per ml by 1·375 mg ml−1 black tea extract and two‐fold diluted tea bag infusion obtained from black tea when incubated at 25°C for 10 s. However, when concentrations of black and green tea extracts were equally adjusted to 344 µg ml−1, green tea extracts showed more antiviral activity against SARS‐CoV‐2. This simple and highly respected beverage may be a cheap and widely acceptable means to reduce SARS‐CoV‐2 viral burden in the mouth and upper gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts in developed as well as developing countries.

The lymphatic system has been suggested to play an important role in cardiovascular (CV) diseases including heart failure (HF). Vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF-C) and VEGF-D are key regulators of lymphoangiogenesis.
Purpose
To investigate the association of VEGF-C and VEGF-D with prognosis in patients with chronic HF (CHF).

The PREHOSP-CHF study is a multicenter prospective cohort study to determine the predictive value of angiogenesis-related biomarkers in CHF. A total of 1,024 patients (mean age, 75.5±12.6 years; male, 58.7%) admitted to acute decompensated HF were included in the analyses. The primary outcome was MACE defined as a composite of CV death or HF hospitalization. The secondary outcomes were all-cause death, CV death, and HF hospitalizations. Serum levels of VEGF-C and VEGF-D, as well as N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), high sensitivity cardiac troponin-I (hs-cTnI), high sensitive C reactive protein (hs-CRP), VEGF, and soluble VEGF receptor-2 (sVEGFR-2) were measured at the time of discharge. Patients were followed-up over two years.
Results
Median [interquartile range] of VEGF-C and VEGF-D levels were 4821 [3633–6131] pg/ml and 404 [296–559] pg/ml, respectively. In multivariate stepwise regression analysis, independent determinants of VEGF-C levels were younger age, female gender, absence of prior HF hospitalization, chronic kidney disease, and anemia, lower ejection fraction, lower NT-proBNP levels, higher VEGF levels, and higher sVEGFR-2 levels, while those of VEGF-D levels were lower body mass index, presence of diabetes and atrial fibrillation, and higher NT-proBNP levels. During the follow-up, a total of 209 (20.4%) all-cause deaths, 112 (10.9%) CV deaths, and 309 (30.2%) HF hospitalizations occurred. After adjusting for established risk factors and CV biomarkers, VEGF-C levels were significantly and inversely associated with the incidence of MACE and non-CV death (Fig.1, model 4). On the other hand, VEGF-D levels were significantly and positively associated with the incidence of HF hospitalization (Fig. 1, model 4). When we divided the patients into 4 groups based on the median of VEGF-C and VEGF-D levels, patients with low VEGF-C and high VEGF-D showed significantly higher incidence of MACE, all-cause death, CV death, and HF hospitalization compared to those with high VEGF-C and low VEGF-D (Fig. 2).
Conclusions
Among patients with CHF, VEGF-C and VEGF-D had different characteristic and association with the incidence of adverse events. VEGF-C levels were inversely associated with the incidence of MACE and non-CV death, and VEGF-D levels were positively associated with the incidence of HF hospitalization. These results suggests different effects of VEGF-C and VEGF-D in CHF. Combination of VEGF-C and VEGF-D enables us to make good risk stratification in patients with CHF.

Background
Several patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (per-AF) suffer from recurrence after pulmonary vein isolation (PVI). Various methods to predict the recurrence were tried, but deep learning on 12-leads electrocardiography (ECG) after PVI was not studied.
Purpose
To elucidate diagnostic performance of deep learning on 12-leads ECG after PVI in patients with per-AF
Methods
We enrolled consecutive 109 patients with per-AF who underwent PVI (68.8±10.0 years, 83 males) excluding failure cases. We defined recurrence in 3–12 months after PVI. From the ECG just after PVI, five beats of each lead were sampled separately. Deep learning (convolutional neural network on bitmap ECG image) was performed by transfer learning of Inception-Resnet-V2 model. Gradient weighted class activation color mapping (GradCam) was performed to detect convolutional importance in the lead.
Results
Thirty-six patients showed recurrence in the period. Lead II (accuracy 0.701), aVR (0.690) were the top 2 leads of prediction, which showed larger accuracy than statistical accuracies of Non PV foci = SVC (accuracy = 0.541) and left atrial diameter >50mm (0.596). In lead II, GradCam spotlighted strong convolution of latter half of P wave in recurrent case, and former half of P wave and T wave in no-recurrent case.
Conclusions
Deep learning on ECG was a powerful tool to predict recurrence of per-AF after PVI.

Background
The transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM), a common condition in the elderly, is a life-threatening disease; however, it is treatable. The early accurate diagnosis is, therefore, an important key to improve the patient's outcomes. Electrocardiography and echocardiography are instant diagnostic tools with red flags for the screening of the ATTR-CM. In fact, ATTR-CM often mimics left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), and the differential diagnosis is difficult to establish. Thus, the characteristics of cardiac amyloidosis may be obscured in ATTR-CM patients with mild LVH, possibly making the disease difficult to diagnose. Therefore, in this study, the effect of LVH on the occurrence of electrocardiographic and echocardiographic parameters for ATTR-CM was investigated, and their incremental value over the age for the screening of ATTR-CM in the patients with mild LVH was recorded.
Methods
This study retrospectively studied 319 consecutive nonischemic LVH patients with a sinus rhythm who underwent detailed diagnostic tests. The light chain-associated amyloidosis was an exclusion criterion. The mean left ventricular wall thickness (MWT) <12 mm was defined as mild LVH, while MWT ≥12 mm was defined as moderate to severe LVH. The ATTR-CM was diagnosed with biopsy or 99 mTc-PYP scintigraphy. The elderly were defined as people aged ≥65 years in males and ≥70 years in females, according to the literature. Each electrocardiographic and echocardiographic parameter was binarized with an external cut-off point to increase the external validity, being the incremental benefit of each parameter over age for identifying ATTR-CM assessed using a receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and comparisons of the area under the curve (AUC).
Results
Fourteen patients (8%) among the 170 patients with mild LVH had ATTR-CM, while 27 patients (18%) among the 149 patients with moderate to severe LVH had ATTR-CM. The patients with mild LVH had fewer electrocardiographic and echocardiographic parameters, showing a significant difference between ATTR-CM and non-ATTR-CM patients than those with moderate to severe LVH (Table 1). Among several binarized parameters, the voltage-to-mass ratio, E/A ratio, the global longitudinal strain, and also the relative apical sparing pattern demonstrated additive value for identifying the ATTR-CM over aging (Table 2). In addition, the discriminative ability of the propensity score calculated from these four variables and age was considered excellent for the screening of ATTR-CM (AUC = 0.98).
Conclusion
The patients with mild LVH appear to have fewer electrocardiographic and echocardiographic specific findings of the ATTR-CM compared to patients with moderate to severe LVH. However, several red flags may be useful for screening ATTR-CM even in patients with a mild LVH.

Background
Soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1), a vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antagonist, has been suggested as a marker of endothelial dysfunction. Circulating sFlt-1 levels are associated with adverse outcomes in patients with preeclampsia, chronic kidney disease, and heart failure. Atrial fibrillation (AF) and coronary artery disease (CAD) are both associated with endothelial dysfunction. However, whether sFlt-1 can predict cardiovascular (CV) events and whether AF modifies the relationship between sFlt-1 and CV events in patients with suspected or known CAD are unknown.
Methods
We performed a nationwide, multicenter, prospective cohort study to determine the prognostic value of sFlt-1 and other biomarkers in patients with suspected or known CAD undergoing elective angiography. Heparin-free fasting serum was collected from the peripheral vein to determine levels of sFlt-1, VEGF, placental growth factor, cystatin C, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), high-sensitivity cardiac troponin-I (hs-cTnI), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). The primary outcome was 3-point major adverse CV events (3P-MACE) defined as a composite of CV death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and nonfatal stroke. The secondary outcomes were all-cause death, CV death, and 5P-MACE defined as a composite of 3P-MACE, heart failure hospitalization, and coronary/peripheral artery revascularization.
Results
3311 patients were consecutively enrolled between Nov 2013 and May 2017. After excluding 56 ineligible patients, 3255 patients (324 AF and 2931 non-AF) were followed up over 3 years (follow-up rate, 99%). During the follow-up, 156 patients developed 3P-MACE, 215 died from any cause, 82 died from cardiovascular disease, and 1361 developed 5P-MACE. The sFlt-1 level was significantly higher in AF compared to non-AF patients (p<0.001). Stepwise regression analysis revealed that the sFlt-1 level was independently associated with AF. After adjusting for potential clinical confounders, serum levels of sFlt-1, NT-proBNP, hs-cTnI and cystatin C, but not other biomarkers, were significantly associated with 3P-MACE in the entire cohort. These associations were still significant in non-AF patients, whereas only the sFlt-1 level was significantly associated with 3P-MACE in AF patients. Serum levels of sFlt-1, but not other biomarkers, were also significantly associated with CV death in AF patients. Among the biomarkers, only the hs-CRP level was significantly associated with all-cause death, and no biomarker was significantly associated with 5P-MACE in AF patients. Furthermore, sFlt-1 provided an incremental prognostic information for 3P-MACE to the model with potential clinical confounders in AF, but not in non-AF patients.
Conclusions
Serum levels of sFlt-1 were significantly associated with 3P-MACE in patients with suspected or known CAD. This association was pronounced in AF patients.

Compound 1 shows lower cytotoxicity and higher anti-tumor efficacy in vitro towards the SCCVII cell line in comparison with 4-borono-L-phenylalanine (BPA) and methyl 2-hydroxyl-5-(1'-ortho-carbonylmethyl-1',2',3'-triazol-4'-yl)-benzonate (2). The bio-enhancement is interpreted using molecular docking calculations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the flexural properties and surface characteristics of a structural colored resin composite after different finishing and polishing methods, in comparison to those of conventional resin composites. METHODS AND MATERIALS A structural color resin composite, Omnichroma (OM, Tokuyama Corp, Chiyoda City, Tokyo, Japan), and two comparison resin composites, Filtek Supreme Ultra (FS, 3M, St Paul, MN, USA) and Tetric EvoCeram (TE, Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein), were used. The flexural properties of the resin composites were determined in accordance with the ISO 4049 specifications. For surface properties, 70 polymerized specimens of each resin composite were prepared and divided into seven groups of 10. Surface roughness (Sa), gloss (GU), and surface free energy (SFE) were investigated after the following finishing and polishing methods. Three groups of specimens were finished with a superfine-grit diamond bur (SFD), and three with a tungsten carbide bur (TCB). After finishing, one of the two remaining groups was polished with a one-step silicone point (CMP), and the other with an aluminum oxide flexible disk (SSD). A group ground with SiC 320-grit was set as a baseline. RESULTS The average flexural strength ranged from 116.6 to 142.3 MPa in the following order with significant differences between each value: FS > TE > OM. The average E ranged from 6.8 to 13.2 GPa in the following order with significant differences between each value: FS > TE > OM. The average R ranged from 0.77 to 1.01 MJ/mm3 in the following order: OM > FS > TE. The Sa values of the OM groups polished with CMP and SSD were found to be significantly lower than those of the other resin composites, regardless of the finishing method. The GU values appeared to be dependent on the material and the finishing method used. The OM specimens polished with SSD showed significantly higher GU values than those polished with CMP. Most of the resin composites polished with SSD demonstrated significantly higher γS values compared to the other groups. Extremely strong negative correlations between Sa and GU in the combined data from the three resin composites and each resin composite and between Sa and γS in the OM specimens were observed; GU showed a strong positive correlation with γS in the same material. CONCLUSION These findings indicate that both flexural and surface properties are material dependent. Furthermore, the different finishing and polishing methods used in this study were observed to affect the Sa, GU, and SFE of the resin composites.

Purpose To examine whether hypoxia and Hif-1α affect sensitivity of murine squamous cell carcinoma cells to boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT).Materials and methods SCC VII and SCC VII Hif-1α-deficient mouse tumor cells were incubated under normoxic or hypoxic conditions, and cell survival after BNCT was assessed. The intracellular concentration of the 10B-carrier, boronophenylalanine-10B (BPA), was estimated using an autoradiography technique. The expression profile of SLC7A5, which is involved in the uptake of BPA, and the amount of DNA damage caused by BNCT with BPA were examined. A cell survival assay was performed on cell suspensions prepared from tumor-bearing mice.Results Hypoxia ameliorated SCC VII cell survival after neutron irradiation with BPA, but not BSH. Hypoxia-treated SCC VII cells showed decreased intracellular concentrations of BPA and the down-regulated expression of the SLC7A5 protein. BPA uptake and the SLC7A5 protein were not decreased in hypoxia-treated Hif-1α-deficient cells, the survival of which was lower than that of SCC VII cells. More DNA damage was induced in SCC VII Hif-1α-deficient cells than in SCC VII cells. In experiments using tumor-bearing mice, the survival of SCC VII Hif-1α-deficient cells was lower than that of SCC VII cells.Conclusion. Hypoxia may decrease the effects of BNCT with BPA, whereas the disruption of Hif-1α enhanced sensitivity to BNCT with BPA.

Abstract
The red alga Laurencia nipponica comprises various chemical races distributed relative to the ocean current in Japanese coastal areas. We investigated the chemical compositions and chemical races of L. nipponica distributed from the Kunashiri and Etorofu Islands, the confluence of the Soya warm current and Oya-shio cold current. Two new halogenated secondary metabolites, deacetylneonipponallene (1) and neopacifenol (2), along with four known compounds, deoxyprepacifenol (3), pacifenol (4), halo-chamigrene diether (5), and isolaurallene (6) were isolated from L. nipponica collected at Chikappunai, Kunashiri Island, while Zaimokuiwa (Kunashiri Island) and Sana (Etorofu Island) populations contained 3, 7-hydroxylaurene (7), 2,10-dibromo-3-chloro-9-hydroxy-α-chamigrene (8), and (3Z)-laurefucin (9). The structures of 1 and 2 were established using spectroscopic methods. The chemical races of L. nipponica distributed in this area were divided into 6- and 9-producing races. Interestingly, both races contained 4 as an additional race-index, as well as its derivatives, 2 and 5. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a race comprising a mixture of two race-index compounds, suggesting that the convergence of two currents causes the production of new and diverse chemical races in this species.

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT)
is a binary therapeutic method
for cancer treatment based on the use of a combination of a cancer-specific
drug containing boron-10 (10B) and thermal neutron irradiation.
For successful BNCT, 10B-containing molecules need to accumulate
specifically in cancer cells, because destructive effect of the generated
heavy particles is limited basically to boron-containing cells. Herein,
we report on the design and synthesis of boron compounds that are
functionalized with 9-, 12-, and 15-membered macrocyclic polyamines
and their Zn2+ complexes. Their cytotoxicity, intracellular
uptake activity into cancer cells and normal cells, and BNCT effect
are also reported. The experimental data suggest that mono- and/or
diprotonated forms of metal-free [12]aneN4- and [15]aneN5-type ligands are uptaken into cancer cells, and their complexes
with intracellular metals such as Zn2+ would induce cell
death upon thermal neutron irradiation, possibly via interactions
with DNA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Adult patients with ischemic Moyamoya disease are advised to undergo selective revascularization surgery based on cerebral hemodynamics. The purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of arterial spin-labeling MR imaging using Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays for the detection of reduced CBF in such patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-seven patients underwent brain perfusion SPECT and pseudocontinuous arterial spin-labeling MR imaging using standard postlabeling delay (1525 ms) and Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays. For Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays, based on data obtained from the 7 sub-boluses with combinations of different labeling durations and postlabeling delays, CBF corrected by the arterial transit time was calculated on a voxel-by-voxel basis. Using a 3D stereotaxic template, we automatically placed ROIs in the ipsilateral cerebellar hemisphere and 5 MCA territories in the symptomatic cerebral hemisphere; then, the ratio of the MCA to cerebellar ROI was calculated. RESULTS The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for detecting reduced SPECT-CBF ratios (<0.686) was significantly greater for the Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays-CBF ratios (0.885) than for the standard postlabeling delay-CBF ratios (0.786) (P = .001). The sensitivity and negative predictive value for the Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays-CBF ratios were 100% (95% confidence interval, 100%-100%) and significantly higher than the sensitivity (95% CI, 44%-80%) and negative predictive value (95% CI, 88%-97%) for the standard postlabeling delay-CBF ratio, respectively. CONCLUSIONS ASL MR imaging using Hadamard-encoded multiple postlabeling delays may be applicable as a screening tool because it can detect reduced CBF on brain perfusion SPECT with 100% sensitivity and a 100% negative predictive value in adult patients with ischemic Moyamoya disease.

Abstract
Background Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) utilizes tumor-selective particle radiation. This study aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of accelerator-based BNCT (AB-BNCT) using a cyclotron-based neutron generator (BNCT 30) and 10B-boronophenylalanine (SPM-011) in patients with recurrent malignant glioma (MG) (primarily glioblastoma [GB]). Methods This multi-institutional, open-label, phase II clinical trial involved 27 recurrent MG cases, including 24 GB cases, who were enrolled from February 2016 to June 2018. The study was conducted using the abovementioned AB-BNCT system, with 500 mg/kg SPM-011 (study code: JG002). The patients were bevacizumab-naïve and had recurrent MG after standard treatment. The primary endpoint was the 1-year survival rate, and the secondary endpoints were overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Results were compared to those of a previous Japanese domestic bevacizumab trial for recurrent GB (JO22506). Results The 1-year survival rate and median OS of the recurrent GB cases in this trial were 79.2% (95% CI: 57.0–90.8) and 18.9 months (95% CI: 12.9–not estimable), respectively, whereas those of JO22506 were 34.5% (90% CI: 20.0–49.0) and 10.5 months (95% CI: 8.2–12.4), respectively. The median PFS was 0.9 months (95% CI: 0.8–1.0) by the RANO criteria. The most prominent adverse event was brain edema. Twenty-one of 27 cases were treated with bevacizumab following progressive disease. Conclusions AB-BNCT demonstrated acceptable safety and prolonged survival for recurrent MG. AB-BNCT may increase the risk of brain edema due to re-irradiation for recurrent MG; however, this appears to be controlled well with bevacizumab.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High-grade meningioma (HGM) is difficult to treat, and recurrent HGM after radiotherapy has an especially poor prognosis. We retrospectively analyzed the cases of 44 consecutive patients with recurrent and refractory HGM who were treated by reactor-based boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). METHODS In 2005-2019, we treated 44 recurrent and refractory HGMs by reactor-based BNCT. We analyzed the patients' tumor shrinkage, overall survival (OS) after initial diagnosis, OS after BNCT, progression-free survival (PFS) post-BNCT, and treatment failure patterns. RESULTS The median OS (mOS) after BNCT and mOS after initial diagnosis were 29.6 (95%CI: 16.1-40.4) and 98.4 (95%CI: 68.7-169.4) months, respectively. The median follow-up after BNCT was 26 (6.4-103) months. The grade 2 (20 cases) and 3 (24 cases) post-BNCT mOS values were 44.4 (95%CI: 27.4-not determined) and 21.55 (10.6-30.6) months, respectively (p=0.0009). Follow-up images were obtained from 36 cases at >3 months post-BNCT; 35 showed tumor shrinkage during the observation period. The post-BNCT median PFS (mPFS) of 36 cases was 13.7 (95%CI: 8.3-28.6) months. The post-BNCT mPFS values in patients with grade 2 and 3 disease were 24.3 (95%CI: 9.8-not determined) and 9.4 (6.3-14.4) months, respectively (p=0.0024). Local recurrence was observed in only 22.2% of cases. These results showed good local tumor control and prolonged survival for recurrent HGM cases. CONCLUSIONS Most of these cases had relatively large tumor volumes. The proportion of grade 3 patients was extremely high. Our patients thus seemed to have poor prognoses. Nevertheless, reactor-based BNCT exerted relatively good local control and favorable survival for recurrent and refractory HGMs.

Abstract
In this study, we examined whether the cancer cell-killing effects of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) are enhanced by manipulating the expression levels of l-type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1) of human cancer cells, which transports boronophenylalanine into cells. We transfected pCMV/LAT1-GFP plasmids into a T98G glioblastoma cell line and selected several clones. Confocal laser microscopic observation was performed to confirm the stable overexpression of LAT1 in the plasma membranes of the clones. Western blot was used to analyze the cellular accumulation of LAT1 protein in the clones. Relative intracellular uptake of boronophenylalanine (BPA) was determined by measuring the radioactivity of 14C-BPA using a radioactive iodine (RI) tracer method. Sensitivity to neutron and gamma (γ)-ray fluences generated by a research reactor facility at Kyoto University was assayed using colony formation assay. Green fluorescent protein (GFP)-tagged LAT1 was observed in the plasma membranes of the LAT1-overexpressing clones and the cellular accumulation of GFP-tagged LAT1 was largely increased in these clones. Intracellular uptake of BPA was 1.5-5.0 times greater among the clones than that in a control clone. The LAT1-overexpressing clones and transiently LAT1-lipofected T98G cells showed clearly enhanced sensitivity to neutron and γ-ray fluences compared to the control clone when they were treated with 10BPA. The sensitivity of cancer cells to the fluences was well correlated with the expression level of LAT1 in the cells and the level of BPA uptake. These results suggest that overexpression of LAT1 in cancer cells results in enhanced anticancer effects of BNCT, and BNCT combined with gene therapy is beneficial for tumors with low LAT1 expression.

Abstract
In cancer therapeutics, boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) requires a platform for selective and efficient 10B delivery into tumor tissues for a successful treatment. However, the use of carborane, a promising candidate with high boron content and biostability, has significant limitations in the biomedical field due to its poor water-solubility and tumor-selectivity. To overcome these hurdles, we present in this study a fluorescent nano complex, combining fluorescent carborane and sodium hyaluronate for high boron concentration and tumor-selectivity. Tumor cells actively internalized the complex through binding hyaluronan to CD44, overexpressed on the tumor cell surface. Furthermore, the subcellular distribution of this complex could also be detected due to its fluorescent properties. Moreover, after thermal neutron irradiations, the complex produced excellent cytotoxicity, equal to or greater than that of the clinically-used BPA-fructose. Therefore, this novel complex could be potentially more suitable for BNCT than the boron agent.
