Trichobezoars in children

Eight children with trichobezoar are reported. In seven cases the trichobezoar was confined to the stomach and duodenum. In one case it was present only in the small and large bowel. Age and sex incidence, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment are discussed. It is suggested that one should suspect trichobezoar when a child, especially a girl, presents with a firm mobile lump in the epigastrium.

Spontaneous tuberculous enteroumbilical fistulas

Gastrointestinal tuberculosis in children is an uncommon condition. Obstruction and hemorrhage are the known common complications of tuberculous enteritis. Perforation is an uncommon complication whereas tubercular enterocutaneous fistula is a still rarer complication. Five children with spontaneous tubercular enteroumbilical fistulas are being reported. All were below the age of 10 years, the youngest being 15 months old. Four children had conservative treatment with antitubercular drugs and one had exploration, resection of gut and excision of fistula. All the children who had conservative treatment survived whereas the child who underwent surgery died in the postoperative period. We feel that the conservative management is the treatment of choice in cases of established tubercular enterocutaneous fistulas.

Intrarectal dermoid: report of a case

Intrarectal dermoid is a rare clinical problem, mostly occurring in women. Though it is presumed that anterior rectal dermoids arise in the ovary and erode into the retum, up to date there has been no substantial evidence for this. A 26-year-old woman is described who presented to us with an intrarectal dermoid wherein the stalk connecting the rectal dermoid and the left ovary was clearly demonstrated.

Stricture-plasty for tubercular strictures of the gastro-intestinal tract

Twenty stricture-plasties have been performed for multiple tubercular strictures of the gastro-intestinal tract in 9 patients, who in total had 35 strictures. The procedure has been found to be safe, simple and effective in relieving obstructive symptoms. It does not appear to carry the disadvantages of entero-anastomosis or multiple and/or massive resections in cases of multiple tubercular strictures of the small bowel.

Antidermatophytic activity of 2-thiotetrahydro-1,3,5-thiadiazines and isothiocyanates

Benzyl, furfuryl, tetrahydronaphthyl, alpha-picolyl, and alpha-homopicolyl derivatives of 2-thiotetrahydro-1,3,5-thiadiazines were studied and found to be more active than beta-picolyl, and pyridyl analogs on dermatophytes, including the more resistant Microsporum canis.
