Abstract
Total absorption spectroscopy is used to investigate the β-decay intensity to states above the neutron separation energy followed by γ-ray emission in (87,88)Br and (94)Rb. Accurate results are obtained thanks to a careful control of systematic errors. An unexpectedly large γ intensity is observed in all three cases extending well beyond the excitation energy region where neutron penetration is hindered by low neutron energy. The γ branching as a function of excitation energy is compared to Hauser-Feshbach model calculations. For (87)Br and (88)Br the γ branching reaches 57% and 20%, respectively, and could be explained as a nuclear structure effect. Some of the states populated in the daughter can only decay through the emission of a large orbital angular momentum neutron with a strongly reduced barrier penetrability. In the case of neutron-rich (94)Rb the observed 4.5% branching is much larger than the calculations performed with standard nuclear statistical model parameters, even after proper correction for fluctuation effects on individual transition widths. The difference can be reconciled by introducing an enhancement of 1 order of magnitude in the photon strength to neutron strength ratio. An increase in the photon strength function of such magnitude for very neutron-rich nuclei, if it proves to be correct, leads to a similar increase in the (n,γ) cross section that would have an impact on r process abundance calculations.

Abstract
The 63Ni(n,γ) cross section has been measured for the first time at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN from thermal neutron energies up to 200 keV. In total, capture kernels of 12 (new) resonances were determined. Maxwellian averaged cross sections were calculated for thermal energies from kT=5-100 keV with uncertainties around 20%. Stellar model calculations for a 25M⊙ star show that the new data have a significant effect on the s-process production of 63Cu, 64Ni, and 64Zn in massive stars, allowing stronger constraints on the Cu yields from explosive nucleosynthesis in the subsequent supernova.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish an automated procedure for the preparation of sodium fluoride (18)F injection using the resources available in our laboratory for the preparation of (18)FDG and to analyze the repercussion of the conditioning column of the fluoride ion entrapment on the characteristics of the final product. MATERIAL AND METHOD The sequence of an (18)FDG synthesis module prepared so that it traps the fluoride ion from the cyclotron in ion-exchange resin diluted with 0.9% sodium chloride. The final solution was dosified and sterilized in a final vial in an automatized dispensing module. Three different column conditioning protocols within the process were tested. Quality controls were run according to USP 32 and EurPh 6, adding control of ethanol levels of residual solvent and quality controls of the solution at 8 h post-preparation. RESULTS Activation of the resin cartridges with ethanol and water was the chosen procedure, with fluoride ion trapping > 95% and pH around 7. Ethanol levels were < 5.000 ppm. Quality controls at 8 h indicated that the solution was in compliance with the USP 32 and EurPh 6 specifications. CONCLUSION This is an easy, low-cost, reliable automated method for sodium fluoride preparation in PET facilities with existing equipment for (18)FDG synthesis and quality control.

Abstract
AIMS To determine whether the repetition of the rapid antigen detection test (RADT) in patients, with a high suspicion of presenting pharyngitis by group A beta-haemolytic streptococci (GABHS), with a previously negative test improves the validity of the test. METHODS Two hundred and twenty-two patients aged 14 years or more with acute pharyngitis and two or more Centor criteria--tonsillar exudates, fever, tenderness in the lymph glands and/or absence of cough--were consecutively recruited. In all patients, a pharyngotonsillar sample was obtained with two swabs, one for the RADT (OSOM Strep A Genzyme test, Genzyme Diagnostics, Cambridge, MA, USA) and the other was sent to the Department of Microbiology for culture. In patients with a negative RADT, the determination was repeated. The sensitivity, specificity and predictive values were determined. RESULTS Cultures were positive for GABHS in 55 patients (24.8%). Three false-negatives and 14 false-positives were observed by comparing the rapid test with throat culture, achieving a sensitivity of 94.5% and a specificity of 91.6%. Positive and negative predictive values were 78.8% and 98.1% respectively. Taking the second determination in the negative cases into account, the results were 96.4%, 91.6%, 79.1% and 98.7% respectively. CONCLUSIONS The negative predictive value achieved with the RADT determination was very high. Repetition of the test only slightly improved this percentage, making repetition of this test unnecessary.

Abstract
Gamma decays from excited states up to Jpi=6+ in the N=Z-2 nucleus 54Ni have been identified for the first time. Level energies are compared with those of the isobars 54Co and 54Fe and of the cross-conjugate nuclei of mass A=42. The good but puzzling f7/ cross-conjugate symmetry in mirror and triplet energy differences is analyzed. Shell model calculations reproduce the new data but the necessary nuclear charge-dependent phenomenology is not fully explained by modern nucleon-nucleon potentials.

Abstract
Aplidin is an antitumor agent in phase II clinical trials that induces apoptosis through the sustained activation of Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK). We report that Aplidin alters glutathione homeostasis increasing the ratio of oxidized to reduced forms (GSSG/GSH). Aplidin generates reactive oxygen species and disrupts the mitochondrial membrane potential. Exogenous GSH inhibits these effects and also JNK activation and cell death. We found two mechanisms by which Aplidin activates JNK: rapid activation of Rac1 small GTPase and downregulation of MKP-1 phosphatase. Rac1 activation was diminished by GSH and enhanced by L-buthionine (SR)-sulfoximine, which inhibits GSH synthesis. Downregulation of Rac1 by transfection of small interfering RNA (siRNA) duplexes or the use of a specific Rac1 inhibitor decreased Aplidin-induced JNK activation and cytotoxicity. Our results show that Aplidin induces apoptosis by increasing the GSSG/GSH ratio, a necessary step for induction of oxidative stress and sustained JNK activation through Rac1 activation and MKP-1 downregulation.

Abstract
In medicine a considerable amount of resources are used in research, but very little attention is paid to ensuring that the findings of research are implemented in routine clinical practice. This prospective study has the aim to evaluate the efficiency of some clinical management strategies (feedback, benchmarking and improving plans) on haemodialysis treatment results in 4 different dialysis centres. We collected consensus data related to haemodialysis results every 6-8 months and informed each centre about its own results (feedback) and how these related to the others(benchmarking). We designed improving plans for any bad result detected. By the end of two years of follow up, 294 patients had been included in the study. The results obtained at the end of the study had improved in comparison with those obtained at the beginning (statistically significant) for the following indicators: % of patients with Hb< 11 g/dl, % patients with Kt/v < 1.2, mean Kt/v, mean albumin, % patients with albumin< 3.5 g/dl y % patients with C reactive protein (CRP) > 5 mg/dl. No statistical changes were found in: mean erythropoietin (EPO) doses, blood pressure (BP), phosphorus plasmatic,calcium-phosphorus product, parathormone (PTHi) and vascular access distribution. We explained the absence of any improvement because of adequate start indicators in some areas (BP and vascular access), therapy with limited efficiency (calcitriol, calcium carbonate and others), lack of support resources (dietetic unit) or inadequate design/implementation of improving plans. In conclusion, our intervention illustrates that combined clinical management strategies(feedback, benchmarking and improving plans) are efficiency in improving some areas of haemodialysis treatment (anaemia, dialysis dose, nutrition and inflammation), although it does not improve calcium phosphate metabolism related indicators.

Abstract
The aim of this work is to study the irradiation of iron salts in solid state (heptahydrated ferrous sulfate) and in frozen acid solutions. The study is focused on finding their possible use as dosimeters for low temperature irradiations and high doses. The analysis of the samples was made by UV-visible and Mössbauer spectroscopies. The output signal was linear from 0 to 10 MGy for the solid samples, and 0-600 Gy for the frozen solutions. The obtained data is reproducible and easy to handle. For these reasons, heptahydrate iron sulfate is a suitable dosimeter for low temperature and high irradiation doses, in solid state, and in frozen solution.

Abstract
The behavior of single crystals of NaCl: Ca(2+), Mn(2+) exposed to gamma rays was explored for its potential usage as a dosimeter. The study was focused to the effect of dose and dose rate. The crystals were analyzed using thermoluminescence (TL). The productions of irradiation defects in the solid were correlated with the glow curve. F-centers were measured as function of the dose. The bleaching of the F-centers produced a decrease of the peak of the glow curve. The results showed that the response is linear in an interval up to 60 Gy.

Abstract
A potential dosimeter based on aqueous frozen solutions and solid-state salt are presented for the evaluation of the energy transferred during the interaction of high-energy radiation with matter at low temperature. The foundation of these dosimeters, both the solid state and the frozen solutions, is based on the measurement of the change of the iron oxidation state. The systems were irradiated with gamma radiation at different doses (up to 10 MGy), and at different temperatures (from 77 to 298 K). The irradiated samples were analysed by UV-spectroscopy and Mössbauer spectroscopy. A theoretical model was developed for the chemical reactions system. This model reproduces the experimental effects produced by the irradiation in aqueous solutions of ferrous salt. The results showed that the response of the dosimeters depends on the irradiation temperature. At low-radiation doses, the response was linear. In particular, this work can be applied to low-temperature dosimetry can be specially applied to simulation experiments of extraterrestrial bodies, as well as in general to space research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sulfur colloid 99mTc-SC, the radiopharmaceutical of choice for solid gastric emptying studies, is not available in our country. It has led us to assess the solid binding stability of seven alternative radiopharmaceuticals that could present adequate fixation to it a priori. MATERIALS AND METHOD The stability of labelled solid food with seven colloidal 99mTc-radiopharmaceuticals of different sizes and nature (MAA, tin colloid, rhenium sulphide macrocolloid, albumin microcolloid, sulfur nanocolloid, albumin nanocolloid and rhenium sulfur nanocolloid) has been studied by measuring their dissociated activity after two hours digestion in simulated gastric fluid (kept 120' in agitation, in HCl 0.1 M at 37). The survey also assesses radiopharmaceutical labelling stability after two hours digestion in identical conditions by measuring their radiochemical purity in ITLC. RESULTS In these conditions, MAA, rhenium sulphide macrocolloid, albumin microcolloid and albumin microcolloid present the best behaviour, with an activity linked to food over 90 % of the previously fixed activity. CONCLUSIONS According to the results, there is no relationship between the radiopharmaceutical size and nature and the stability of its binding to the solid food. Because rhenium sulphide macrocolloid is no longer manufactured and the other three radiopharmaceuticals which have a binding stability to the solid food over 90 % do not include digestive explorations amongst their indications, nowadays, there is a serious legal limitation to carry out this type of studies in our country.

Abstract
Obesity is associated with different disturbances in endocrine function. Both spontaneous growth hormone (GH) secretion and its response to several stimuli have shown to be reduced in obese patients. The GH responses to GH-releasing hormone and other challenges by pyridostigmine suggest that the reduction in GH secretion is related to an increased somatostatinergic tone. Other experiments point to a down-regulation of somatostatin receptors in the somatotroph cell. Ghrelin administration is followed by a massive GH release, but the possibility that ghrelin or GHRH deficiency are the cause of GH deficiency in obesity is unlikely. The increase in free fatty acids in obesity might be related to GH reduction, since acipimox administration is able to reverse GH secretion. In women, abdominal obesity is associated with hyperandrogenism and low sex hormone-binding globulin levels. Obese men have low testosterone and gonadotrophin concentrations, specially in cases of morbid obesity. An increase in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity and some resistance to dexamethasone suppression have been described in abdominal obesity. This effect may be due to neuroendocrine alterations related to a genetic origin. Adrenal hyperfunction may favour cardiovascular and metabolic complications. There are no disturbances in thyroid function. Sometimes a reduction in prolactin response to several stimuli has been reported. This effect may be due to hyperinsulinaemia or to disturbances in the dopaminergic tone.

Abstract
Exhaled nitric oxide (Fe(NO)) measurements provide a noninvasive approach to the evaluation of airway inflammation. Flow-independent NO exchange parameters [airway NO transfer factor (D(NO)) and airway wall NO concentration (Cw(NO))] can be estimated from Fe(NO) measurements at low flows and may elucidate mechanisms of disturbances in NO exchange. We measured Fe(NO) in sedated infants by using an adaptation of a raised lung volume rapid thoracic compression technique that creates forced expiration through a mass-flow controller that lasts 5-10 s, at a constant preset flow. We measured Fe(NO) at expired flows of 50, 25, and 15 ml/s in five healthy infants (7-31 mo). Median Fe(NO) increased [24, 40, and 60 parts per billion (ppb)] with decreasing expiratory flows (50, 25, and 15 ml/s). Group median (range) for D(NO) and Cw(NO) were 12.7 (3.2-37) x 10(-3) nl. s(-1). ppb(-1) and 108.9 (49-385) ppb, respectively, similar to values reported in healthy adults. Exhaled NO is flow dependent; flow-independent parameters of exhaled NO kinetics can be assessed in infants and are similar to values described in adults.

Abstract
Gamma rays from the N = Z-2 nucleus (50)Fe have been observed, establishing the rotational ground state band up to the state J(pi) = 11+ at 6.994 MeV excitation energy. The experimental Coulomb energy differences, obtained by comparison with the isobaric analog states in its mirror (50)Cr, confirm the qualitative interpretation of the backbending patterns in terms of successive alignments of proton and neutron pairs. A quantitative agreement with experiment has been achieved by exact shell model calculations, incorporating the differences in radii along the yrast bands, and properly renormalizing the Coulomb matrix elements in the pf model space.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES We assessed the efficacy and safety of dipyrone in comparison with tramadol in the relief of early postoperative pain following abdominal hysterectomy. METHODS A total of 151 women between 18 and 60 years of age undergoing abdominal hysterectomy during general anesthesia participated in a randomized, double-blind, controlled, multicenter study. Seventy-three patients received dipyrone and 78 received tramadol. Patients received an intravenous loading dose of the study drug immediately after operation followed by intravenous (IV) maintenance infusion and IV on-demand boluses up to a maximum number of predetermined doses/day of 8 g dipyrone and 500 mg tramadol. The duration of the study was 24 hours. RESULTS The mean (SD) number of boluses in the dipyrone group was 3.8 (2.4) and 3.5 (2.5) in the tramadol group (95% confidence interval, -0.455 to 1.175), and the percentage of patients requiring rescue IV morphine (dipyrone 26.9%, tramadol 26.8%) was not statistically significant. Other analgesic efficacy parameters, such as pain intensity differences, sum of pain intensity differences, pain relief assessed by the patient, or patients who required the maximum number of demand doses, were not different between treatment groups. A significantly higher percentage of adverse gastrointestinal effects was found in patients given tramadol (42.1%) than in patients given dipyrone (20.2%) (P <.05). Also, a significantly higher number of tramadol-treated patients required ondansetron to control nausea and vomiting at 1 hour (19% v 7%), 2 hours (26% v 11%), and 24 hours (46% v 29%) (P <.05) after surgery. Patients and the investigators reported similar tolerability for both study arms. CONCLUSIONS Dipyrone and tramadol showed similar efficacy for early pain relief after abdominal hysterectomy. Nausea and vomiting, possibly caused by the tramadol, occurred more frequently in those patients. In this group, the need of the antiemetic drug ondansetron was also higher.

Abstract
In this work, we report on a relationship between urinary selenium and the development of cervical uterine cancer. A simple chemical method was developed to concentrate trace amounts of selenium from relatively large urine samples by use of small activated carbon filters. When these filters are irradiated with thermal neutrons, selenium can be determined either by 77mSe (t1/2 = 17.5 s) or 75Se (t1/2 = 120 d). In this article, we report the results for 82 urine samples from women with cervical uterine cancer in several stages of development and from healthy controls. These results show a statistically significant increase of selenium excretion in cancer patients as compared to controls. Urinary selenium excretion is highest for patients in the intermediate stages of the disease.

Abstract
We present the results of a retrospective study of 903 patients treated with conservation surgery for carcinoma of the supraglottic larynx so we can evaluate our management of supraglottic cancer with different types of surgery. In 301 patients, an extended supraglottic laryngectomy was performed. The recent selective use of transoral laser resection appears to be a rational approach. The 5-year uncorrected survival was 84%, 81%, 76%, and 55% for stages I, II, III, and IV, respectively. The most common site for local-regional failure was the cervical lymphatics. The percentage of occult disease in the NO neck was 21% and epilaryngeal supraglottic location, locally advanced and GIII tumors have a higher frequency of lymph node involvement. There were no differences between comprehensive and anterolateral elective neck dissections. A bilateral elective neck dissection is recommended. In histologically positive neck disease, the survival rates were better with postoperative radiotherapy only in cases of extracapsular spread.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to the ageing of the general population and improved techniques, the acceptance rate of patients starting dialysis has increased. Mortality remains high and the factors involved include nutritional parameters, which also seem to be of value for prognosis in this population. SCOPE OF THE STUDY We proposed a prospective study in our haemodialysis population in order to establish the factors with the greatest predictive value for mortality. PATIENTS AND METHODS One hundred stabilized patients receiving this technique were included in the study, with registration of any concomitant pathologies, their severity and the presence of HBP; we carried out a clinical assessment measuring nutritional parameters and functional capacity, with anthropometric and analytical measurements with dialysis dosage and protein catabolism rate. The observation period lasted for one year. The statistical analysis compared survivors and dead patients by means of a bivariant analysis, and after selecting the significant variables, log regression was applied. RESULTS The annual death rate was 15%. The bivariant analysis highlights the greater age and the prevalence of vascular pathology prior to dialysis, with a greater severity score and prior weight loss, as well as a lessened functional capacity and clinical assessment score among the dead patients. The analytical parameters showed lymphocytes to be significantly lower among the deceased. The log regression analysis revealed the predictive value of severity, followed by initial vascular co-morbidity, lymphocyte levels less than 1,200 and the nutritional clinical assessment score. CONCLUSIONS 1. Severity was the main factor predicting mortality. 2. The presence of vascular co-morbidity at the start of dialysis increased the likelihood of death by more than ten times. 3. Lymphopenia of less than 1,200 and low scores in the subjective overall assessment were predictors of mortality.

Abstract
AIMS To compare transdermal nitroglycerin (NTG) and corticosteroid infiltration in patients with rotator cuff tendinitis (RCT). DESIGN Experimental, randomized controlled study. SETTING Semirural basic health area in the Garraf region of Barcelona province, Spain, with a population of public health service users of 12000. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients diagnosed as having RCT of less than 6 weeks' evolution who had not responded to treatment with oral nonsteroid antiinflammatory drugs. The patients were distributed randomly into two groups: a) group A, local infiltration via a posterior approach with a depot corticosteroid and local anesthesia, and b) group B, treated for 3 days with a 5-mg NTC patch. MAIN MEASURES Age, sex, pain (measured with an analog visual scale) and adverse events. In patients who showed a partial response, treatment was repeated up to 3 times at 15-day intervals. Pain was tested after 7-10 days of treatment. Complete improvement was considered a reduction in pain of more than 5 points on the analog visual scale; partial improvement was considered a reduction of 3-5 points, and treatment failure was recorded when there was no improvement in pain or when there was a decrease of less than 3 points. RESULTS A total of 48 patients were included; 33 (69%) were women and 15 (31%) were men. Mean age was 61 years. In group A, complete improvement was seen in 19 patients and partial improvement in 3; treatment failed in 2 patients. In group B complete improvement was seen in 5 patients, partial improvement in 5, and failure of treatment in 14. The difference between groups was statistically significant. Adverse events were mild pain at the injection site in 4 patients from group A, and headache in 15 patients from group B, 8 of whom abandoned treatment for this reason. CONCLUSION Treatment with NTG is not a clear alternative to infiltration of corticosteroids in patients with RCT, because of its lack of effectiveness and because of the greater number of patients who had adverse events that lead them to abandon treatment.

Abstract
In the ant Camponotus festinatus, two different hexamerins accumulate stage-specifically during the late larval period and at various times in adults. These hexamerins serve as storage proteins and play important roles in brood nourishment and colony founding. We report an analysis of the cDNA sequence of C. festinatus hexamerin 2 (CfeHex2). The native protein contains 732 amino acids, which are moderately enriched in aromatic amino acids, aspartate and asparagine. Phylogenetic analyses show a close relationship of CfeHex2 to a putative toxin of the braconid wasp, Bracon hebetor. The divergence of Formicidae and Braconidae hexamerins was calculated to have begun 187 MYA, an estimate consistent with currently accepted phylogeny of insect orders.

Abstract
A prospective study was carried out in 207 patients with benign and neoplastic diseases of the digestive tract who were candidates for elective surgery, in order to evaluate the influence of the nutritional status and perioperative transfusions on the appearance of postoperative infections. All patients were subjected to a nutritional assessment study based on anthropometric parameters, analytical data, and cutaneous delayed hypersensitivity tests. With the aim of establishing a risk potential for postoperative infection based on the nutritional status of the patients, a multi-parametric index called Nutritional Septicemic Risk (NSR) was applied to all. NSR = 14.265 - 1.764 + Albumin - 1.472 x risk area The criteria that were considered to indicate Proteic Caloric Malnutrition (PCM) were the presence of a Usual Weight Percentage (UW%) lower than 90% and an albumin level lower than 3.5 g/dl. Transfusions were indicated at Hemoglobin levels lower than 10 g/dl and/or a Hematocrit lower than 30%. The perioperative transfusion was defined as that which took place within three weeks prior to the surgery, during the surgery itself, and that which took place during the first 48 hours postoperatively. The postoperative infections have qualitatively been evaluated as: infection of the surgical wound, intraabdominal abscess, and respiratory infection. A total of 80 patients (38.6%) showed some degree of malnutrition. With regard to the transfusions, 55 patients (26.6%) underwent a transfusion. The univariable study has identified the nutritional status as classified according to the NSR multi-parametric index, neoplastic disease, perioperative transfusion and a surgical intervention time greater than two hours, as being risk factors of infection. By means of the logistic regression study, the nutritional status (NSR score) and the perioperative transfusions have been identified as independent risk factors.

Abstract
Pseudomona vasculitis is an exceptional disease. Only a few cases have been reported, non with oropharyngeal involvement. The case of a 30-year-old, HIV-positive man who suddenly developed septicemia and necrotizing lesions with tissue destruction of the oropharynx is reported. Histological study confirmed vasculitis. Pseudomona aeruginosa was isolated in peripheral blood and in the biopsy of the palatal lesion. Antibiotic treatment produced satisfactory results.

Abstract
Conversation surgery for glottic carcinoma has two goals: preserving normal laryngeal function and achieving a rate of local control similar to total laryngectomy. A retrospective study was made of the medical charts of 424 patients diagnosed as glottic carcinoma and treated with conservative surgical procedures at the Gregorio Marañón en University of Hospital of Madrid, Spain, between 1962 and 1991. Our treatment protocol for patients with early or intermediate-stage glottic carcinoma is presented.

Abstract
Conservative surgical treatment of carcinomas limited to the supraglottic larynx has been shown to be an oncologically and functionally effective therapeutic approach. A retrospective study was made of the medical records of 792 patients who underwent conservative surgery for supraglottic laryngeal carcinoma at the Gregorio Marañón University Hospital of Madrid, Spain, in 1962-1991. Our theoretical protocol for treating supraglottic tumors is presented. The oncological results (survival, local control, recurrences) and functional results (breathing, swallowing, voice quality) were analyzed.

Abstract
Based on the observation that repeated acupoint stimulation elicits evoked potentials whose latency varies as a result of the stimulus intensity we assessed the evoked potential elicited by stimulus of three acupoints (Hegu, Shenmen and Houxi), comparing the results to the potentials produced by median nerve stimulus and nonacupunctural point. Fourteen healthy individuals were studied, and no modifications related to the Hegu and Shenmen point potentials increased with the amount of stimuli, until it reached a plateau at around 400 stimuli. It did not vary for Houxi and the nonacupunctural point. We conclude that the somesthesic afference from acupunctural points must involve control circuits that are quantitatively different for each point.

Abstract
Storage proteins are a major feature of holometabolous development in insects, accumulating during the larval period and disappearing during metamorphosis. In ants (Hymenoptera:Formicidae), storage proteins also play important roles in adult females. Three types of storage proteins have been characterized from ants: hexamerins, proteins high in glutamine/glutamic acid, and very high density lipoproteins (VHDLs). The hexamerins have moderately high levels of aromatic amino acids and belong to the arthropod hemocyanin family of proteins. The proteins high in glutamine/glutamic acid can form hexamers under some conditions, but the subunit size is larger than that of typical hexamerins. The VHDLs are dimeric and share features with storage chromoproteins described from Lepidoptera. In Camponotus festinatus (Formicinae), storage proteins are found in adult ants in two situations. First, lack of brood stimulates workers to accumulate the same two storage hexamers found in larvae. Second, young virgin queens store large reserves of these proteins before mating. Protein storage by queens has been confirmed in two other subfamilies of ants, indicating it is widespread. The capacity to store proteins as adults enables queens to rear brood without leaving the nest and workers to store rich reserves and regulate larval diet seasonally.
