[Comparison of spontaneous correction in thoracic curves after anterior versus posterior selective fusion in Lenke type 5C adolescent idiopathic scoliosis]

Objective: To analyze the long-term results and the influence factors of spontaneous correction of unfused thoracic curves in anterior and posterior selective fusions in Lenke type 5C adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Methods: From January 2005 to December 2011, 89 Lenke type 5C AIS patients with a minimum of 5-year follow-up who underwent thoracolumbar/lumbar (TL/L) selective fusion in Spine Surgery of Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital were reviewed.Forty-six patients underwent anterior fusion (anterior group), while 46 underwent posterior fusion (posterior group). The following radiological parameters were measured and analyzed at pre-operation, post-operation, and latest follow-up: curve magnitude of primary thoracolumbar/lumbar and secondary thoracic curve, trunk shift, thoracic apical vertebral translation, upper instrumented vertebra tilt, thoracic kyphosis, proximal junctional angle, sagittal vertical axis. Independent sample t test was used to compare the above parameters between the two groups. Results: Compared with those in posterior group, anterior group were found with less fusion levels (5.4±0.6 vs 5.9±0.8, t=3.318, P=0.001) and longer operation time[(276±28)min vs (186±36)min, t=13.101, P<0.001]. Immediately after surgery, the spinal deformity was significantly corrected in the two groups. The mean spontaneous correction rates of the minor curve were 50%±21% and 56%±20% in anterior and posterior groups, respectively (t=1.489, P=0.140). After a mean follow-up of (6.8±1.7) years in anterior group and (6.3±1.3) years in posterior group, the spontaneous correction rate of minor curve was maintained at 46%±22% and 49%±19%, respectively (t=0.703, P=0.484), with no significant correction loss. Other radiographic parameters were also stably maintained. According to the correlation analysis, the spontaneous correction rate was significantly correlated with upper instrumented vertebra (UIV) tilt in both groups (anterior: r=-0.526, posterior: r=-0.399, both P<0.05). Conclusions: Both anterior and posterior selective fusion can achieve satisfactory spontaneous correction of unfused thoracic curves in Lenke type 5C AIS, with no significant difference between the two surgical approaches. UIV tilt is a key influence factor of spontaneous correction of thoracic curves.

Change in gut microbiota for eczema: Implications for novel therapeutic strategies

Eczema is one of the most common inflammatory diseases, often constituting a lifelong burden for afflicted individuals. The complex interaction of host genetic and multiple environmental factors contribute to its pathogenesis. A relationship between maladjustment of gut microbiota and eczema has been brought into the light of day in most previous studies. In eczema preclinical models, specific intestinal microbial species have been demonstrated to prohibit or dwindle immune responsiveness, indicating that these strains among commensal gut bacteria may exert either a morbific or phylactic function in eczema progression. As such, oral probiotics can serve as a medicinal approach for eczema therapy. Given that relative scientific work is still at the early stage, only limited data are available in the field. New sequencing techniques have been fortunately performed to gain access to an extended research on the relationship between gut bacterial flora and human diseases. In the current review, we identified the role of intestinal microbiota in the development of eczema and how specific bacterial strains adjust the immune responsiveness in the midst of disease progression. Probiotics as an applicable treatment for eczema were evaluated in other threads as well.

π and 4π Josephson Effects Mediated by a Dirac Semimetal

Cd_{3}As_{2} is a three-dimensional topological Dirac semimetal with connected Fermi-arc surface states. It has been suggested that topological superconductivity can be achieved in the nontrivial surface states of topological materials by utilizing the superconductor proximity effect. Here we report observations of both π and 4π periodic supercurrents in aluminum-Cd_{3}As_{2}-aluminum Josephson junctions. The π period is manifested by both the magnetic-field dependence of the critical supercurrent and the appearance of half-integer Shapiro steps in the ac Josephson effect. Our macroscopic theory suggests that the π period arises from interference between the induced bulk superconductivity and the induced Fermi-arc surface superconductivity. The 4π period is manifested by the missing first Shapiro steps and is expected for topological superconductivity.

In silico characterization of Echinococcus granulosus paramyosin nucleotide sequence for the development of epitope vaccine against cystic echinococcosis

The paramyosin (Pmy) protein has been presented as a potential vaccine candidate against Schistosoma spp. However, it remains elusive whether it works in controlling cystic echinococcosis (CE), which is caused by the larval stages of Echinococcus granulosus (E. granulosus). This study investigated the characteristics of E. granulosus Pmy (EgPmy) using in silico analysis and evaluated its potential as an epitope vaccine. The secondary structure was predicted by SOPMA software and linear B-cell epitopes were screened by the Kolaskar and Tongaonkar’s method on IEBD while conformational B-cell epitopes were predicted by the Ellipro. Additionally, the epitopes of cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) were analyzed by the NetCTL-1.2 server. The results showed that α-helices, extended strands, random coils and β-turns accounted for 84.82 %, 6.60 %, 5.56 % and 3.01 % in EgPmy’s secondary structure, respectively. A total of 29 linear B-cell epitopes and 6 conformational epitopes were identified together with 25 CTL epitopes. The CTL epitope 709KLEEAEAFA717 showed a high potential to elicit CTL response. These results suggested that EgPmy has a strong immunogenicity, which could serve as a reference for the development of EgPmy-based epitope vaccine against CE.

Management of recurrent tracheoesophageal fistula after esophageal atresia and follow-up

Recurrent tracheoesophageal fistula (rTEF) is a complex complication after the repair of esophageal atresia (EA) and remains a challenge because of difficulties in preoperative management and the substantial rates of mortality and morbidity after reoperation. By reviewing a single institution's experience in the management of rTEF and assessing the outcome, we aimed to provide an optimal approach for managing rTEF and to evaluate growth and feeding problems after reoperations. The medical records of 35 patients with rTEF treated at a single institution from June 2012 to December 2015 were reviewed, and follow-up data were collected from all survivors. The diagnosis of rTEF was made using a modified esophagram in 32 of 35 patients. Before reoperation, all patients received continuous aspiration to prevent reflux and aspiration pneumonia by placing two nasogastric tubes at the level of the fistula and into the stomach, and they received enteral nutrition through a jejunal feeding tube. Thirty-five patients received a total of 41 reoperations, including 12 operations of fistula resection, 28 reanastomosis, and 1 esophageal replacement. The incidence of postoperative anastomotic leak (AL), anastomotic stricture (AS), and repeat recurrences was 40.0%, 17.1%, and 11.4%, respectively. The mortality rate was 8.6%. All survivors achieved full oral intake. Mid-term follow-up (median of 18 months) revealed that 7 (21.9%) presented prolonged meal time, 6 (18.8%) had feeding refusal, 8 (25.0%) experienced coughing during feeding, and 7 (21.9%) had vomiting during feeding. According to the growth data, 5 survivors (15.6%) presented with growth retardation, including stunting (n = 1), wasting (n = 2), and underweight (n = 2). The modified esophagram is an effective and reliable method for diagnosing rTEF. Optimized preoperative management and surgical techniques lead to a satisfactory outcome. Nevertheless, nutritional evaluation and feeding guidance by a nutritionist after reoperation are recommended.

Low genetic diversity and strong population structure shaped by anthropogenic habitat fragmentation in a critically endangered primate, Trachypithecus leucocephalus

Habitat fragmentation may strongly impact population genetic structure and reduce the genetic diversity and viability of small and isolated populations. The white-headed langur (Trachypithecus leucocephalus) is a critically endangered primate species living in a highly fragmented and human-modified habitat in southern China. We examined the population genetic structure and genetic diversity of the species and investigated the environmental and anthropogenic factors that may have shaped its population structure. We used 214 unique multi-locus genotypes from 41 social groups across the main distribution area of T. leucocephalus, and found strong genetic structure and significant genetic differentiation among local populations. Our landscape genetic analyses using a causal modelling framework suggest that a large habitat gap and geographical distance represent the primary landscape elements shaping genetic structure, yet high levels of genetic differentiation also exist between patches separated by a small habitat gap or road. This is the first comprehensive study that has evaluated the population genetic structure and diversity of T. leucocephalus using nuclear markers. Our results indicate strong negative impacts of anthropogenic land modifications and habitat fragmentation on primate genetic connectivity between forest patches. Our analyses suggest that two management units of the species could be defined, and indicate that habitat continuity should be enforced and restored to reduce genetic isolation and enhance population viability.

[Co-overexpression of human tissue kallikrein 1 and human metalloproteinase 1 tissue inhibitor inhibits neointima formation in the rat artery after balloon angioplasty]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the effects of adenovirus-mediated human tissue kallikrein 1(hTK-1) and/or human tissue metalloproteinase inhibitor 1 (hTIMP-1) gene delivery on the neointima formation in balloon-injured rat carotids and related mechanism.

METHODS

Forty-six male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned into 6 groups with the random number table: (1) sham-operated group(n=6), (2) angioplasty group (n=8), (3) vector virus group (n=8), (4) hTK-1 group (n=8), (5) hTIMP-1 group (n=8), (6) hTK-1-hTIMP-1 group (n=8). Except sham rats, all rats underwent carotid artery balloon injury and local delivery of saline or different recombined adenoviruses respectively. Rats were sacrificed 14 days later. Intima/media area ratio was assessed on hematoxylin-eosin stained tissue section. Immunofluorescence images stained for hTK-1, hTIMP-1 were obtained and analyzed by the confocal microscope for co-localization examination of hTK-1 and hTIMP-1. The protein expression levels of hTK-1, hTIMP-1, matrix metalloproteinases(MMP)-2 and MMP-9 were determined by Western blot. Immune histochemical staining for PCNA was also performed.

RESULTS

(1)Intima area, intima/media area ratio, PCNA, MMP-2 and MMP-9 levels were all significantly increased in rats underwent angioplasty (did or did not receive vector virus) compared with sham-operated rats (all P<0.01) while above parameters were similar between rats underwent angioplasty or vector virus delivery (all P>0.05). (2) The intima area of rats received vector virus, hTK-1, hTIMP-1 or dual gene transfer were (0.160±0.010), (0.110±0.015), (0.121±0.016) or (0.081±0.008) mm(2) respectively, intima area was similar between rats received hTK-1 or hTIMP-1 (P>0.05), differences were found between other groups (all P<0.01). The intima/media area ratio of rats received vector virus, hTK-1, hTIMP-1 or dual gene transfer were 2.035±0.117, 1.443±0.097, 1.522±0.078 or 0.972±0.072 respectively, no difference was found between rats received hTK-1 or hTIMP-1 in intima/media area ratio (all P>0.05), differences were found between other groups (all P<0.01). The MMP-2 and MMP-9 expression of rats received vector virus, hTK-1, hTIMP-1 or dual gene transfer were 0.817±0.036, 0.606±0.044, 0.571±0.061 or 0.455±0.030 and 0.745±0.057, 0.613±0.038, 0.582±0.050 or 0.473±0.038 respectively, no difference was found between rats received hTK-1 or hTIMP-1 in MMP-2 or MMP-9 expression (all P>0.05), differences were found between other groups (all P<0.01). The PCNA expression of rats received vector virus, hTK-1, hTIMP-1 or dual gene transfer were 0.065±0.007, 0.052±0.004, 0.055±0.007 or 0.031±0.004 respectively, no difference was found between rats received hTK-1or hTIMP-1 in PCNA expression (all P>0.05), differences were found between other groups (all P<0.01).

CONCLUSION

hTK-1 and hTIMP-1 co-overexpression may synergistically inhibit neointimal hyperplasia, attenuate vascular remodeling and reduce restenosis possibly via down regulating the expressions of PCNA, MMP-2 and MMP-9 in balloon-injured rat carotids.

Skin image retrieval using Gabor wavelet texture feature

OBJECTIVE

Skin imaging plays a key role in many clinical studies. We have used many skin imaging techniques, including the recently developed capacitive contact skin imaging based on fingerprint sensors. The aim of this study was to develop an effective skin image retrieval technique using Gabor wavelet transform, which can be used on different types of skin images, but with a special focus on skin capacitive contact images.

METHODS

Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) is a useful technology to retrieve stored images from database by supplying query images. In a typical CBIR, images are retrieved based on colour, shape, texture, etc. In this study, texture feature is used for retrieving skin images, and Gabor wavelet transform is used for texture feature description and extraction.

RESULTS

The results show that the Gabor wavelet texture features can work efficiently on different types of skin images. Although Gabor wavelet transform is slower compared with other image retrieval techniques, such as principal component analysis (PCA) and grey-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), Gabor wavelet transform is the best for retrieving skin capacitive contact images and facial images with different orientations. Gabor wavelet transform can also work well on facial images with different expressions and skin cancer/disease images.

CONCLUSION

We have developed an effective skin image retrieval method based on Gabor wavelet transform, that it is useful for retrieving different types of images, namely digital colour face images, digital colour skin cancer and skin disease images, and particularly greyscale skin capacitive contact images. Gabor wavelet transform can also be potentially useful for face recognition (with different orientation and expressions) and skin cancer/disease diagnosis.

Evaluation of two molecular techniques for rapid detection of the main dermatophytic agents of tinea capitis

BACKGROUND

Tinea capitis is very common in Western China, with the most widespread aetiological agent being Trichophyton violaceum, while Microsporum canis is prevalent in the remainder of China. Conventional diagnostics and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing analyses have proven relatively limited due to the close phylogenetic relationship of anthropophilic dermatophytes. Therefore, alternative molecular tools with sufficient specificity, reproducibility and sensitivity are necessary.

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate two molecular techniques [multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) and rolling circle amplification (RCA)] for rapid detection of the aetiological agents of tinea capitis, T. violaceum and M. canis.

METHODS

Probes of RCA and MLPA were designed with target sequences in the rDNA ITS gene region. Strains tested consist of 31 T. violaceum, 22 M. canis and 24 reference strains of species that are taxonomically close to the target species.

RESULTS

The specificity and reproducibility of RCA and MLPA in detection of T. violaceum and M. canis were both 100% in both species. Sensitivity testing showed that RCA was positive at concentrations down to 1·68 × 10(6) copies of DNA in the TvioRCA probe, and 2·7 × 10(8) copies of DNA in McRCA. MLPA yielded positive results at concentrations of DNA down to 1·68 × 10(1) copies in the TvioMLPA probe and 2·7 × 10(2) in McMLPA.

CONCLUSIONS

The two techniques were sufficiently specific and sensitive for discriminating the target DNA of T. violaceum and M. canis from that of closely related dermatophytes. RCA and MLPA are advantageous in their reliability and ease of operation compared with standard polymerase chain reaction and conventional methods.

Microwave photonic comb filter with ultra-fast tunability

A microwave comb filter with ultra-fast tunability is proposed based on the fundamental delay-line microwave photonic filter. The central frequency of the passband or stopband in such a filter can be rapidly adjusted, along with the independent tunability of the free spectral range (FSR). Experimental results show that the central frequency of the transfer function is electronically tuned with a frequency difference of half of the FSR at a speed of <100  ps. Such high-speed tunability is vital for high-speed microwave switching, frequency hopping, cognitive radio, and next-generation radar systems.

A new small molecule inhibits Streptococcus mutans biofilms in vitro and in vivo

AIMS

The aim of this study was to identify new small molecules that can inhibit Streptococcus mutans biofilms by in vitro and in vivo model.

METHODS AND RESULTS

We evaluated the effect of a small molecule 2-amino-imidazole/triazole conjugate (2-AI/T) on the formation of Strep. mutans biofilms by culturing in 96-well plates. Toxicity was assessed through cell culture and intragastrically administering to mice. The anti-biofilm and anti-caries effects were investigated in vivo. The inhibitive mechanism was detected by isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantification (itraq) and RT-QPCR. In vitro and in vivo study revealed that 2-AI/T significantly inhibited biofilm formation of Strep. mutans and is more so than inhibiting planktonic cells without toxicity. The ribosome and histidine metabolism pathways of Strep. mutans were significantly regulated by this compound.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest that the 2-AI/T conjugate is a potent inhibitor that can be potentially developed into a new drug to treat and prevent dental caries.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

This is the first study to use small molecule from marine natural products, to protect from dental caries in vivo. It has potential broad range application in clinical caries prevention, or as a bioactive ingredient for food applications.

Exploring the Value of Using Color-Coded Quantitative DSA Evaluation on Bilateral Common Carotid Arteries in Predicting the Reliability of Intra-Ascending Aorta Flat Detector CT-CBV Maps

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Cerebral blood volume, acquired with flat panel detector CT by injecting contrast medium into the ascending aorta, enabled real-time acquisition of brain functional information with remarkable reduction of contrast medium usage comparing to an intravenous injection approach. However, individual vasculature and flow variations cause inhomogeneous contrast medium distribution and unexpected asymmetric perfusion for certain patients even without cerebral circulatory disorders. This work aimed at testing the feasibility of using color-coded quantitative DSA to predict the reliability of flat panel detector CT-based CBV maps by injecting contrast medium into the ascending aorta by exploring the correlation between measurements of color-coded quantitative DSA and the symmetry of CBV maps.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

For 12 patients without perfusion-related cerebral abnormities, color-coded quantitative DSA at the aortic arch and flat panel detector CT-based CBV maps by injecting contrast medium into the ascending aorta were acquired. In color-coded quantitative DSA, ROIs were defined on the bilateral common carotid arteries. Time-density curves were extracted, and area under the curve values were calculated. To evaluate brain perfusion symmetry, we defined ROIs on the anterior and middle cerebral artery territories in CBV maps, and quantitative CBV values were extracted.

RESULTS

Eight patients demonstrated good perfusion symmetry with relative CBV of 0.96 ± 0.06, and their relative area under the curve was found to be 0.99 ± 0.02. For the other 4 patients, CBV from the left hemisphere was significantly lower than that from the right with relative CBV of 0.81 ± 0.09. This asymmetric perfusion was confirmed by the color-coded quantitative DSA with relative area under the curve values of 0.79 ± 0.03.

CONCLUSIONS

This preliminary study showed good correlation between relative area under the curve from color-coded quantitative DSA and relative CBV from CBV maps. Color-coded quantitative DSA potentially helped sort out patients whose vascular anatomy could support reliable CBV acquisitions of flat detector CT by injecting contrast medium into the ascending aorta.

17β-oestradiol enhances global DNA hypomethylation in CD4-positive T cells from female patients with lupus, through overexpression of oestrogen receptor-α-mediated downregulation of DNMT1

BACKGROUND

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) affects primarily women, and oestrogen appears to play a significant role in SLE development. Our previous studies showed that inhibition of DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) enhanced global DNA hypomethylation in CD4+ T cells isolated from patients with SLE, and exacerbated SLE. However, the effects of 17β-oestradiol on global DNA hypomethylation and DNMT1 expression in CD4+ T cells of female patients with SLE remain largely unknown.

AIM

To investigate the ability of 17β-oestradiol to affect global DNA methylation in female SLE CD4+ T cells and the mechanism(s) underlying this ability.

METHODS

We enrolled 30 women with SLE and 15 controls. CD4+ T cells exposed to 17β-oestradiol were analysed by global DNA methylation measurements, western blotting and real-time PCR. Plasma 17β-oestradiol levels were measured by ELISA.

RESULTS

In female SLE CD4+ T cells, 17β-oestradiol downregulated DNMT1 expression at both the mRNA and protein levels, and enhanced global DNA hypomethylation. Plasma 17β-oestradiol levels were similar in patients with SLE and controls. The mRNA expression of oestrogen receptor (ER)α, but not of ERβ, was upregulated in SLE CD4+ T cells. Furthermore, the 17β-oestradiol-induced downregulation of DNMT1 expression and global DNA hypomethylation were rescued by an ER antagonist.

CONCLUSIONS

17β-oestradiol enhances global DNA hypomethylation in female SLE CD4+ T cells via downregulation of DNMT1 mediated by ERα overexpression.

In vitro antifungal susceptibility of Trichophyton violaceum isolated from tinea capitis patients

OBJECTIVES

Trichophyton violaceum is an anthropophilic dermatophyte that is endemic to parts of Africa and Asia and is sporadic in Europe. T. violaceum mainly causes tinea capitis in both children and adolescents. Although the infections caused by T. violaceum are of considerable medical importance, its antifungal susceptibility profile remains poorly examined.

METHODS

In this study, we tested the in vitro antifungal susceptibility of a set of clinical T. violaceum isolates obtained from tinea capitis patients, using the CLSI broth microdilution method. We tested eight antifungals and used isolates collected from Western China (21), Eastern China (12), the Middle East (1), Europe (20), South Africa (7) and Canada (1).

RESULTS

The geometric means of the MICs of the antifungals for all isolates were as follows (in increasing order): posaconazole, 0.021 mg/L; terbinafine, 0.023 mg/L; voriconazole, 0.062 mg/L; amphotericin B, 0.20 mg/L; itraconazole, 0.34 mg/L; caspofungin, 0.56 mg/L; fluconazole, 4.23 mg/L; and flucytosine, 8.46 mg/L. No statistically significant differences in the susceptibility profiles of T. violaceum were detected within the geographical regions tested.

CONCLUSIONS

Posaconazole, terbinafine and voriconazole were shown to be the most potent antifungal agents against T. violaceum isolates obtained from tinea capitis patients worldwide. These results might help clinicians in developing appropriate therapies that have a high probability of successfully treating tinea capitis due to T. violaceum.

In situ biaxial rotation at low-temperatures in high magnetic fields

We report the design, construction, and characterization of a biaxial sample rotation stage for use in a cryogenic system for orientation-dependent studies of anisotropic electronic transport phenomena at low temperatures and high magnetic fields. Our apparatus allows for continuous rotation of a sample about two axes, both independently and simultaneously.

Polarization-diversified photonic comb filter with independently tunable free spectrum range

A polarization-diversified photonic comb filter with tunable free spectrum range (FSR) is proposed using two variable differential group delay (DGD) elements in a loop configuration. Two different cosine transfer functions could be simultaneously realized on orthogonal polarization states. Experimental demonstrations also verify feasibilities in various reconfigurable transfer functions.

Associations of clinical features and prognosis with age at disease onset in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus

The objective of this study is to evaluate the association of clinical features and prognosis with age at disease onset in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in a large, multicenter Chinese cohort. Medical records of 1898 SLE inpatients from 15 hospitals were reviewed and classified into three groups according to their ages at disease presentation. Categorical data were analyzed by chi-square test and potentially associated factors were tested by multinomial logistic regression. Among the patients studied, 259 (13.6%) were juvenile onset (≤18 years), 1444 (76.1%) were early onset (>18 and ≤45 years) and 195 (10.3%) were late onset (>45 years). Whenever manifestations occurred, most patients (>80%) were diagnosed within two years. Juvenile-onset patients were more likely to be untreated before admission ( p < 0.001) and have mucocutaneous manifestations ( p < 0.001), but musculoskeletal symptoms ( p < 0.05) and leukopenia ( p < 0.05) were less frequent, while comorbidities were much higher in patients with late-onset SLE ( p < 0.001). Neuropsychiatric, cardiopulmonary, renal and gastrointestinal involvement, disease activity index and damage scores were similar among three groups. Anti-Sm antibodies were less prevalent in late-onset patients ( p < 0.05) and antimalarial drugs were more often applied to juvenile-onset patients ( p < 0.001). As expected, mortality was elevated in the late-onset SLE group ( p < 0.05), in which nearly half died of infections, which was much higher than those in the other two groups ( p < 0.001). Logistic regression confirmed that patients with juvenile- and early-onset disease were associated with high incidence of being untreated prior to admission, and with low incidence of comorbidities as well as deaths caused by infection compared to patients with late-onset lupus. Interestingly, our data showed that more patients with late-onset disease had a SLEDAI score change of >7 at discharge. In conclusion, age at onset has an impact on SLE disease status, and infection is the main cause of death in those with late-onset lupus. Considering that the late-onset patients had simultaneously easily controllable diseases and high incidence of comorbidities, a different treatment strategy from younger patients should be considered.

Magnetoplasmons in quasineutral epitaxial graphene nanoribbons

We present an infrared transmission spectroscopy study of the inter-Landau-level excitations in quasineutral epitaxial graphene nanoribbon arrays. We observed a substantial deviation in energy of the L(0(-1)) → L(1(0)) transition from the characteristic square root magnetic-field dependence of two-dimensional graphene. This deviation arises from the formation of an upper-hybrid mode between the Landau-level transition and the plasmon resonance. In the quantum regime, the hybrid mode exhibits a distinct dispersion relation, markedly different from that expected for conventional two-dimensional systems and highly doped graphene.

Feeding Artemisia annua alters digesta pH and muscle lipid oxidation products in broiler chickens

Because of growing consumer concern about the use of antimicrobials and the ban on most antibiotic feed additives in the European Union, there is increased interest in using alternatives to antimicrobials in poultry diets. Dried leaves of Artemisia annua have been used in Oriental medicine due to their antimicrobial activities. In the current study, the effect of including A. annua in broiler diets on hindgut and ceca pH, lipid oxidation products, and phenolic content of dark and white meat, and bird performance were investigated. A total of 96 broiler chicks were kept in 48 cages. Two cages with 2 birds per each cage are considered as 1 replicate, and there were 8 replications per treatment. The birds were fed corn-soy diets containing 0% (control), 2% (ART2), or 4% (ART4) dried A. annua leaves from d 14 through d 42. Cecal digesta pH was the lowest in birds fed the ART4 diet (P < 0.02), whereas the pH of ileal digesta was the lowest in ART2 (P < 0.01). Lipid oxidation products measured as TBA reactive substances (TBARS) were lower in the breast and thigh muscle of birds fed ART2 and ART4 diets compared with the control (P < 0.0001). No difference was found in total fat content of the liver, abdominal fat pads, or breast or thigh muscle content (P > 0.05). Artemisia annua addition did not affect final BW, weight gain, feed consumption, carcass weight, or feed:gain. No difference was observed in the relative weight of liver, abdominal fat, spleen, or heart tissue. Gastric acidity is protective against intestinal colonization and translocation of pathogenic bacteria. Therefore, gut pH and muscle tissue TBARS reduction in birds fed ART2 and ART4 suggest that A. annua may prove useful as a natural phytogenic feed additive with antioxidant potential that could be incorporated into poultry diets.

Photonic generation of phase-coded microwave signals with tunable carrier frequency

A photonic scheme to generate a phase-coded microwave signal with tunable carrier frequency based on a simple single-trip and two-pass structure is proposed. Facilitated by the fiber Bragg grating and phase modulator along the trip, both frequency doubling and signal phase coding could be achieved simultaneously. Phase-coded microwave signals at 20 and 22 GHz are experimentally generated.

Photonic arbitrary waveform generation based on crossed frequency to time mapping

Microwave photonic arbitrary waveform generation based on incoherent frequency-to-time-mapping (FTTM) accompanied by intersymbol interference, so called crossed FTTM (CFTTM). The pulse shape can be defined and tuned by properly adjusting the spectrum shaper (symbol shape) and the degree of intersymbol interference. UWB-, triangular-, rectangle-, comb- and user-defined pulse shapes are experimentally obtained.

Peripheral blood CD40-CD40L expression in human breast cancer

BACKGROUND

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. T cell-based immunotherapy for cancer has attracted much attention recently. CD40 and CD40L occupy an important position of specific immune response. In this paper, we want to study the role of co-stimulatory molecules CD40/CD40L and their clinical significance in peripheral blood of patients with breast cancer.

METHODS

Thirty breast cancer patients served as observation group, who were diagnosed as having infiltrating ductal breast cancer histopathologically, and 30 healthy as control group. Flow cytometric analysis was conducted to detect the expression of CD40 and CD40L on B and T lymphocytes in peripheral blood. The relationship between the CD40/CD40L expression levels and pathological grades was analyzed.

RESULTS

The expression levels of CD40/CD40L on B cells and T cells in breast cancer patients were significantly higher than those in the controls (all P < 0.001), and CD40/CD40L levels had a significant positive relationship with pathological grades (all P < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The upregulated levels of co-stimulators CD40/CD40L on B cells and T cells may play an important role in the immune pathogenesis of breast cancer.

Laparoscopic versus open surgery for rectal cancer: a clinical comparative study

OBJECTIVE

To compare short-term surgical outcomes and long-term survival following laparoscopic or open resection for rectal cancer.

METHODS

A total of 381 patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery and 276 undergoing open surgery for curative resection of rectal cancer were included. Long-term survival and peri- and postoperative data were retrospectively reviewed from a prospectively-collected database.

RESULTS

Surgical groups were comparable regarding age, gender, tumour stage and preoperative comorbidities. Laparascopic surgery was associated with significantly longer duration of surgery, less intraoperative blood loss and fewer postoperative infections than open surgery. Patients who underwent laparoscopic resection had significantly earlier recovery of gastrointestinal function than those who underwent open surgery. There were no significant between-group differences in number of lymph nodes excised, specimen length or distal margin. The 3- and 5-year survival rates and overall survival were similar in the two groups, and survival was not influenced by tumour location.

CONCLUSION

Laparoscopic surgery can achieve the same oncological results as open resection in patients with rectal cancer, supporting its continued use in the management of this disease.

Bandwidth improvement for slow light using amplification characteristics of cascaded vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers

A scheme to improve the bandwidth of slow light using cascaded vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the scheme, a proper adjustment on the gain peaks of two cascaded VCSELs enables the generation of the desired composite gain spectrum, which has flat-top gain and delay profiles with enhanced peak values. By employing the improved gain and delay profiles in a slow light system, a large delay can be achieved within a wider bandwidth. In the experiment, by using two cascaded VCSELs, a tunable slow light up to 135 ps for a 5 Gbits/s pseudorandom binary sequence is demonstrated with relatively low signal distortion.

Photonic generation of impulse ultrawideband signals with switchable shapes and polarities based on frequency-to-time mapping

A photonic approach to generate impulse ultrawideband (UWB) signals with switchable shapes and polarities based on the frequency-to-time mapping technique is proposed and demonstrated. UWB monocycle, doublet, and triplet signals with two polarities can be obtained by adjusting the switchable spectrum shaper.

PDM RZ-to-NRZ and NRZ-to-PRZ format conversions using a variable DGD element inside a polarization-diversified loop

A novel scheme for bit-rate-variable polarization-division-multiplexed return-to-zero to nonreturn-to-zero and NRZ to pseudo-return-to-zero format conversions is proposed using a variable differential-group-delay element inside a polarization-diversified loop. Conversion for both 2×10 and 2×12.5 Gbit/s PDM signals are successfully demonstrated with approximately 1 dB additional power penalty by properly adjusting DGD values of the variable DGD element.

Spin transition in the ν=8/3 fractional quantum Hall effect

We present here the results from a density dependent study of the activation energy gaps of the fractional quantum Hall effect states at Landau level fillings ν=8/3 and 7/3 in a series of high quality quantum wells. In the density range from 0.5×10(11) to 3×10(11) cm(-2), the 7/3 energy gap increases monotonically with increasing density, supporting its ground state being spin polarized. For the 8/3 state, however, its energy gap first decreases with increasing density, almost vanishes at n~0.8×10(11) cm(-2), and then turns around and increases with increasing density, clearly demonstrating a spin transition.

Simultaneous all-optical RZ-to-NRZ format conversion for two tributaries in PDM signal using a single section of highly nonlinear fiber

Simultaneous all-optical RZ-OOK to NRZ-OOK format conversion for two tributaries in PDM signal is demonstrated utilizing a single section of highly nonlinear fiber through polarization nonlinear loop mirror configuration. Less than 1-dB power penalty is achieved in a 2 × 12.5-Gb/s PDM system, and only 1.4-dB SNR penalty is obtained in a 2 × 40-Gb/s PDM system.

Reversible watermarking based on invariant image classification and dynamical error histogram shifting

In this article, we present a novel reversible watermarking scheme. Its originality stands in identifying parts of the image that can be watermarked additively with the most adapted lossless modulation between: Pixel Histogram Shifting (PHS) or Dynamical Error Histogram Shifting (DEHS). This classification process makes use of a reference image derived from the image itself, a prediction of it, which has the property to be invariant to the watermark addition. In that way, watermark embedded and reader remain synchronized through this image of reference. DEHS is also an original contribution of this work. It shifts predict-errors between the image and its reference image taking care of the local specificities of the image, thus dynamically. Conducted experiments, on different medical image test sets issued from different modalities and some natural images, show that our method can insert more data with lower distortion than the most recent and efficient methods of the literature.
