Abstract
Objective: To study the intention on quitting smoking and related factors, so as to provide evidence on related important determinants. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 14 villages in Shandong, China. A total of 1 287 male daily smokers were interviewed, face-to-face. Multiple logistic regression method was used to assess the factors associated with quitting intention among male daily smokers. Dominance analysis was used to assess the relative contribution of determinants on quitting intention which were identified in the multiple logistic regression model. Results: Among 1 287 male daily smokers, 24.7% expressed quitting intention within the next 6 months. Four determinants for quitting intention were identified in the multiple logistic regression model, including previous experience of quitting attempt (OR=1.691, 95% CI:1.458-1.962), lower level of smoking intensity (OR=0.751, 95%CI: 0.639-0.884), extensive knowledge on specific health effects of smoking (OR=1.038, 95% CI: 1.001-1.077) and presence of chronic disease (OR=1.765, 95% CI: 1.013-3.075). Results from the dominance analysis showed that 'previous quitting attempt experience' was the most important determinant regarding quitting intention, followed by low smoking intensity, knowledge of the specific health effects of smoking, and the presence of chronic disease. Conclusion: The rate of quitting intention on cigarette smoking among rural male smokers remained low. Quitting intention was associated with previous quit attempt experience.

Abstract
RIZ1 is a tumor suppressor gene. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the inhibitory effect of RIZ1 gene therapy on the growth of SiHa cervical cancer cells and its synergism with paclitaxel. The expression levels of RIZ1 were examined by real-time PCR and western blotting before and after transfection of RIZ1. The effects of paclitaxel or pcDNA3.1(+)-RIZ1 alone or in combination, on the proliferation of SiHa cells were evaluated by MTT method. The inhibitory effect on the proliferation of SiHa cells was more significant in the pcDNA3.1(+)-RIZ1 combined with paclitaxel group than in the pcDNA3.1(+)-RIZ1 or paclitaxel groups (P<0.05). The expression level of RIZ1 in SiHa cells increased after treatment with paclitaxel, which indicated a synergism between them. RIZ1 gene therapy combined with paclitaxel showed stronger cell inhibition than paclitaxel alone, which indicated a synergism between them.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was performed to evaluate the regulating effects of acetylpuerarin on inflammation in an Alzheimer's disease (AD) rat model and an inflammatory cell model. METHODS Healthy female Wistar rats and mouse BV2 microglia cells were selected. AD rat models were established with the method of bilateral intrahippocampal amyloid-β(Aβ)1-42 injections and the inflammatory cell models were established using Aβ25-35-induced mouse BV2 microglia cells. The cytotoxicity of acetylpuerarin on BV2 microglial cells was detected by MTT assay and the morphological changes of BV2 microglia cells were observed under inverted phase contrast microscope. As inflammatory parameters, the expressions of IL-1β, iNOS, IL-6 and TNF-α were examined by Elisa, Immunohistochemistry, Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), Western blot and Immunofluorescence analyses. We also examined the acetylpuerarin's effect on the activity of PKC-δ, IKKβ and caspase-8/caspase-3 pathway. RESULTS Acetylpuerarin exerted no significant cytotoxicity on BV2 microglia cells and was applied in all subsequent experiments. Acetylpuerarin treatment mitigated Aβ25-35-induced morphological changes associated with microglia activation. Moreover, the expressions of caspase-8, cleaved caspase-3, PKC-δ, IKKβ, iNOS, IL-1β and TNF-α in Aβ25-35-stimulated BV2 microglia cells were significantly suppressed by acetylpuerarin and in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, the expression of IL-1β in hippocampus and the level of IL-6 in serum of Aβ1-42 treated rat were reduced by acetylpuerarin and in a concentration-dependent manner. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that acetylpuerarin's anti-inflammation mechanism on AD may be mediated through the PKC-δ-dependent caspase signalling pathway.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the relationship between postoperative X-ray type in 2 years after healing of congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia(CPT) and refracture of CPT in children. Methods: A retrospective study was performed on 67 children patients with Crawford type Ⅳ CPT who were treated with combined surgeries from December 2007 to August 2012.There were 46 male and 21 female patients with 37 cases with left CPT and 30 cases with right CPT. There were 12 cases with proximal tibia dysplasia, 56 cases with neurofibromatosis type 1. The median age when operation was 2.8 years(from 0.6 to 11.2 years). The patients were divided into three groups, CPT with hypertrophic group, CPT with mediate group and CPT with atrophic group, on the basis of ratio of healing cross-sectional area and transition zone in pseudarthrosis. The incidence of refracture in the three groups were investigated. Results: The refracture rates of three groups were 13%(5/38), 14%(3/21), 5/8, respectively. The refracture rate difference between CPT with hypertrophic group and CPT with mediate group was not statistically significant(P=0.590). The refracture rate of CPT with atrophic group was statistically significant lower than that of CPT with hypertrophic group and CPT with mediate group(P=0.007, 0.019). In addition, the refracture-free cumulative survival rate of CPT with hypertrophic group or CPT with mediate group was higher than that of CPT with atrophic group with the statistically significant difference(both P<0.05). And the refracture-free cumulative survival rate in CPT with hypertrophic group was lower than that in CPT with mediate group, the difference was not significant(P>0.05). Conclusion: After the union of CPT, patients with hypertrophic, mediate type X ray characteristic showed lower incidence of refracture than those with atrophic type.

Abstract
The magneto optical Kerr effect (MOKE) is a widely used technique in magnetic domain imaging for its high surface sensitivity and external magnetic compatibility. Optimization of Kerr microscopy will improve the detecting sensitivity and provide high-quality domain images. In this work, we provide a method to optimize the polarizer azimuth in improving the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) in longitudinal Kerr microscopy with the generalized magneto optical ellipsometry. Detailed analysis of the MOKE signal and the noise components are provided to study the optimum polarizer and analyzer azimuth combinations. Results show that, for a fixed polarizer angle 1°, the laser intensity noise and the shot noise, which vary with the input laser power, have a similar amplitude and decline with the analyzer azimuth increasing. When the analyzer is set at the extinction place, the Johnson noise plays a dominate role in the total noise. Then, the S/N values are calculated to find the optimum polarizer and analyzer azimuth. Results show that the optimum polarizer and analyzer azimuth combination for Permalloy is (18.35°, 68.35°) under an incident angle of 45°. After that, the S/N of 200 nm Permalloy at different analyzer angles with the polarizer azimuth set at 18.35° is measured to verify the validity of the simulation results. At last, the S/N at different incident angles is calculated. Results show that the optimum incident angle of 200 nm Permalloy film to improve the S/N is 70.35° under the polarizer and analyzer angles set at the optimal combinations (18.35°, 68.35°).

Abstract
Lycoris radiata is an important medicinal and ornamental plant of China. In the present study, somatic chromosome counts and karyotype analyses, which are important aspects of plant phylogeny and evolution, were performed in 466 individuals from 25 L. radiata populations by root tip squash method. Chromosome counts revealed that 10 populations were diploid (2n = 2x = 22) and 15 were triploid (2n = 3x = 33). Except for one diploid population containing some triploid plants, the remaining 24 populations showed a single cytotype. Karyotype analysis showed that the karyotypes of L. radiata varied in different populations and even within the same population. However, based on the Stebbins' system, the karyotype of all the populations could be classified in 4A classes. The cluster analysis and ordination methods demonstrated that the L. radiata populations grouped in two major clusters. Previous research has shown that the triploid strain of L. radiata is a genetically identical species. However, the cluster analysis revealed that the triploid strains clustered in two groups instead of one, which indicates that these strains may not be identical species, genetically. This study is expected to improve the understanding of the genetic diversity in L. radiata and provide a basis for future studies on species differentiation, speciation, and taxonomy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the effect of inherent depression on chronic visceral hypersensitivity. The differences of visceral sensitivity, colitis, and brain activation between Fawn-Hooded (FH/Wjd) and Sprague-Dawley(SD) rats were identified after neonatal colon acetate stimulation. METHODS The specific pathogen free Fawn-Hooded (FH/Wjd) and Sprague-Dawley(SD) rats were used to establish irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) model. The visceral sensitivity was measured by colorectal distension (CRD). The expression of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), mast cell (MC), indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) in colon and IDO in specific cerebral regions were detected through immunohistochemistry. RESULTS Abdominal withdrawal reflex (AWR) scores showed that visceral sensitivity of acetate-enema groups was significantly higher than that of saline-enema groups (FH/Wjd:2.44 ± 0.04 vs.1.96 ± 0.07, P < 0.05; SD: 1.75 ± 0.13 vs.1.32 ± 0.05, P < 0.05). Furthermore, FH/Wjd rats of IBS group scored significantly higher than SD rats of IBS group (2.44 ± 0.04 vs.1.75 ± 0.13, P < 0.05). The MC amounts of both SD and FH/Wjd IBS group rats were significantly more than those of their control groups (FH/Wjd:43.24 ± 1.72 vs. 24.92 ± 1.38, P < 0.01. SD: 23.80 ± 1.28 vs. 14.24 ± 0.92, P < 0.01). Besides, the MC amounts of control and IBS group of FH/Wjd rats were significantly more than that of SD IBS group rats (P < 0.01). The IDO and 5-HT positive cells in colonic mucosa of IBS group of both SD and FH/Wjd rats were significantly more than those of their control groups, respectively(P < 0.01). The IDO, 5-HT positive cells in colonic mucosa of both control and IBS group of FH/Wjd rats were significantly more than those of both control and IBS group of SD rats (control:IDO,24.64 ± 2.22 vs. 15.52 ± 1.39;5-HT,21.32 ± 1.26 vs. 12.72 ± 1.12. IBS: IDO,44.92 ± 2.31 vs. 20.85 ± 1.72; 5-HT, 31.84 ± 1.57 vs. 19.65 ± 1.09.P <0.01). The expression of IDO in prelimbic cortex (PrL) areas of FH/Wjd IBS rats was significantly higher than that of IBS group of SD rats (49.60 ± 4.31 vs. 35.60 ± 2.42, P <0.01), and the expression of IDO in rostral anterior cingulate cortex (rACC) areas of FH/Wjd IBS rats was significantly more than that of FH/Wjd control rats (45.44 ± 1.16 vs. 34.08 ± 2.76, P <0.01). CONCLUSION Inherent depressive FH/Wjd rats were more sensitive to neonatal colon acetate stimulation, presenting as visceral hypersensitivity which maybe associated with increased MC amounts and over-expression of 5-HT and IDO in colon, suggesting that depression disorder may aggravate functional disturbance of gastrointestinal tract by regulating the response to inflammatory stimulation.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters of main length ratios associated with morphological traits in Paralichthys olivaceus. At 180, 240 and 360 days of age, body length (L1 ), head length (L2 ), body depth (L3 ), caudal peduncle depth (L4 ) and caudal-peduncle length (L5 ) were observed in 4757-5224 individuals from 52 full-sib families. Based on these observed traits, the main length-ratio traits including L3 :L1 , L2 :L1 , L5 :L1 and L4 :L3 were constructed. Three single-trait animal models were used to examine the phenotypic variation of length-ratio traits and were compared using the likelihood ratio test. As a result, the optimal model for all the analysed traits was determined as the model with the fixed, additive genetic and full-sib family effects. Using the optimal model, animal model analysis for single trait showed that heritabilities were estimated to be low, ranging from 0·122 to 0·276. The estimates for all length-ratio traits decreased while the days of age increased except for L3 :L1 . Multivariate animal model analysis indicated that within and among days of age, genetic correlations between length-ratio traits were different in the direction and magnitude. Genetic parameter estimation of main length ratios would be helpful for genetic improvement of body shape in P. olivaceus.

Abstract
We first reported Alternaria heveae (E.G. Simmons ) to be the pathogen that caused black leaf spot of rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg) in Heikou county in July 2014 (1). Black leaf spots that resembled the symptoms caused by A. heveae were observed on the leaves of rubber trees of the whole propagule collection nursery in Jingping County (22°68' N and 103°05' E) of Yunnan Province. Black foliar spots (0.1 to 2 mm in diameter) surrounded by a yellow halo with lesions slightly sunken on the leaf surface were observed. To confirm whether the disease was caused by the same pathogen, 5-mm2 sections were removed from the leading edge of the lesion and were surface-sterilized in 75% ethanol, air-dried, plated on potato carrot agar (PCA), and incubated at 28°C in the dark. Colonies of the fungus on PCA had round margins and little aerial mycelia with gray-black coloration after 6 days of growth on PCA (2). Medium brown conidia were found to be in short chains of two to eight spores, ovoid, obclavate, and obpyriform, with or without a short conical or cylindrical-shaped apical beak. Conidia ranged from 22.5 to 67.5 μm long (mean 39.9 μm) × 10 to 15 μm wide (mean 12.5 μm; 100 colodia were measured), with three to six transverse septa and zero to three longitudinal or oblique septa. Morphological characteristics matched the descriptions of A. alternata [(Fries) Keissler] (4).The ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region of one single-spore isolate, Ah02JP1, was amplified with primers ITS1 and ITS4. The PCR product was sequenced directly and deposited in GenBank (Accession No. KM111289). A BLAST search of the GenBank database revealed 100% similarity with A. alternata isolates KJ829535.1, KJ677246.1, and KF813070.1. Therefore, the pathogen was identified as A. alternata on the basis of its morphological characteristics and ITS sequence. Pathogenicity of a representative isolate, Ah02JP1 was confirmed using a field rubber tree inoculation method. Three rubber plants (the clone of rubber tree Yunyan77-4) were grown to the copper-colored leaf stage. Leaves were spray-inoculated (104 conidia per milliliter spore suspension) until drops were equally distributed using a manual pressure sprayer. Three rubber plants sprayed with sterile distilled water were used as controls. After inoculation, the plants were covered with plastic bags to maintain high relative humidity. The plastic bags were removed 2 days post-inoculation (dpi), and the plants were monitored daily for symptom development. Five days post-inoculation, spots similar to the original ones seen on the field trees developed on all inoculated leaves, while control leaves remained symptomless. A. alternata was re-isolated from spray-inoculated leaves, confirming Koch's postulates. A. alternata has been reported as the causal agent of leaf blight of rubber tree in India, which initially appeared as minute spots on leaves and enlarged with the growth of the leaves (3). However, in the present study, the symptoms (black leaf spots) remained small over time after inoculation. To our knowledge, this is the first report of A. alternata on rubber tree in China. Correct identification of pathogens is essential for disease management strategies. This report will establish a foundation for the further study of Alternaria alternata to address the disease effectively. References: (1) Z. Y. Cai et al. Plant Dis. 98:1011, 2014. (2) E. Mirkova. J. Abstract
The mud crab (Scylla paramamosain) is considered a potentially important marine crab species for selective breeding. Here, we first examined sex ratio and differences in 16 growth traits between females and males in a G1 population of S. paramamosain, and we then analyzed the correlation between these growth traits and their effects on body weight (BW). Of these growth traits, nine were significantly different between sexes. In females, the correlation coefficients in all trait pairs ranged from 0.524 to 0.997. The traits carapace length (CL) and distance between lateral spine 2 (DLS2) significantly affected BW directly, with the path coefficients being 1.124 and -0.186, respectively. The determination coefficients of traits CL and DLS2 to BW were 1.263 and 0.035 with the total value being 0.951, indicating that the two traits were the key factors affecting BW. In males, the correlation coefficients in all trait pairs ranged from 0.881 to 0.999. The three traits body height (BH), fixed finger height of the claw (FFHC), and meropodite length of pereopod 2 (MLP2) significantly affected BW directly, with the path coefficients being 0.484, 0.300, and 0.225, respectively. The determination coefficients of traits BH, FFHC and MLP2 to BW were 0.234, 0.090 and 0.051, with the total value being 0.967, indicating that these three traits played a key role in affecting BW. Moreover, we constructed two best-fit linear regression equations, which were Y (BW) = 4.969 X1 (CL) - 0.758 X2 (DLS2) - 140.177 and Y (BW) = 3.806 X1 (BH) + 2.371 X2 (FFHC) + 1.725 X3 (MLP2) - 123.559 in females and males, respectively.

Abstract
Rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg.) is an important industrial crop of tropical areas for natural rubber production. In October 2013, foliar spots (0.1 to 0.4 mm in diameter), black surrounded by a yellow halo, and with lesions slightly sunken were observed on the rubber tree leaf in a growing area in Heikou County of Yunnan Province. Lesion tissues removed from the border between symptomatic and healthy tissue were surface sterilized in 75% ethanol and air-dried, plated on PDA plates, and incubated at 28°C with alternating day/night cycles of light. The pathogen was observed growing out of many of the leaf pieces, and produced abundant conidia. Colonies 6.1 cm in diameter developed on potato carrot agar (PCA) after 7 days, with well-defined concentric rings of growth. Colonies on PCA were composed of fine, dark, radiating, surface and subsurface hyphae. Conidia produced in PCA culture were mostly solitary or in short chains of 2 to 5 spores, long ovoid to clavate, and light brown, 40 to 81.25 × 8 to 20 μm (200 colonies were measured), with 3 to 6 transverse septa and 0 to 2 longitudinal or oblique septa. Morphological characteristics were similar to those described for Alternaria heveae (3,4). A disease of rubber tree caused by Alternaria sp. had been reported in Mexico in 1947 (2). DNA of Ah01HK13 isolate was extracted for PCR and sequencing of the ITS region with ITS1 and ITS4 primers was completed. From the BLAST analysis, the sequence of Ah01HK13 (GenBank Accession No. KF953884), had 97% similarity to A. dauci, 96% identical to A. macrospora (AY154701.1 and DQ156342.1, respectively), indicating the pathogen belonged to Alternaria genus. According to morphological characteristics, this pathogen was identified as A. heveae. Pathogenicity of representative isolate, Ah01HK13 was confirmed using a field rubber tree inoculation method. Three rubber plants (the clone of rubber tree Yunyan77-4) were grown to the copper-colored leaf stage and inoculated by spraying spore suspension (concentration = 104 conidia/ml) to the copper-colored leaves until drops were equally distributed on it using manual pressure sprayer. Three rubber plants sprayed with sterile distilled water were used as controls. After inoculation, the plants were covered with plastic bags. The plastic bags were removed after 2 days post-inoculation (dpi) and monitored daily for symptom development (1). The experiment was repeated three times. The typical 0.1 to 0.4 mm black leaf spots were observed 7 dpi. No symptoms were observed on control plants. A fungus with the same colony and conidial morphology as A. heveae were re-isolated from leaf lesions on inoculated rubber plants, but not from asymptomatic leaves of control plants, fulfilling Koch's postulates. Based on these results, the disease was identified as black spot of rubber tree caused by A. heveae. To our knowledge, this is the first report of A. heveae on rubber tree in China. Abstract
Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is an important oilseed crop widely grown in the central regions of China. A new leaf blight has increasingly been observed in sesame fields in Anhui, Hubei, and Henan provinces since 2010. Approximately 30 to 40% of the plants were symptomatic in the affected fields. Initial symptoms were yellow to brown, irregularly shaped lesions. Lesions later expanded and the affected leaves tuned grayish to dark brown and wilted, with a layer of whitish mycelial growth on the underside. Severe blighting caused the center of lesions to fall out, leaving holes in the leaves. Sections of symptomatic leaf tissues were surface-sterilized in 75% ethanol for 30 s, then in 1% HgCl2 for 30 s, rinsed three times in sterile distilled water, and plated onto potato dextrose agar (PDA). The resulting fungal colonies were initially white, and then became grayish-brown with sporulation. Conidia were single-celled, black, smooth, spherical, 14.2 to 19.8 μm (average 17.1 μm) in diameter, and borne on a hyaline vesicle at the tip of each conidiophore. Morphological characteristics of the isolates were similar to those of Nigrospora sphaerica (1). To verify the identification based on morphological features, the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region of the ribosomal RNA was amplified using ITS1 (5'-TCCGTAGGTGAACCTGCGG-3') and ITS4 (5'-TCCTCCGCTTATTGATATGC-3') primers (3), and then sequenced and compared to the GenBank database through a BLAST search. Comparison of the sequence revealed 100% similarity to N. sphaerica (GenBank Accession No. JF817271.1). On the basis of morphological data and the ITS rDNA sequence, the isolate was determined to be N. sphaerica. Pathogenicity tests were conducted using fresh and healthy sesame leaves of 10 plants. A conidial suspension (106 conidia/ml) collected from a 7-day-old culture on PDA was used for inoculation. Leaves of 10 plants were spray-inoculated with the spore suspension at the 6-week-old growth stage, and an additional 10 plants were sprayed with sterile water. Inoculated plants were covered with polyethylene bags to maintain high humidity. Plants were kept at 28°C and observed for symptom every day. Ten to 15 days after inoculation, inoculated leaves developed blight symptoms similar to those observed on naturally infected leaves. No symptoms were observed on the control leaves. N. sphaerica was re-isolated from the inoculated leaves, thus fulfilling Koch's postulates. N. sphaerica has been reported as a leaf pathogen on several hosts worldwide (2). To our knowledge, this is the first report of Nigrospora leaf blight on sesame caused by N. sphaerica in China. References: (1) M. B. Ellis. Dematiaceous Hyphomycetes. CMI, Kew, Surrey, UK, 1971. Abstract
High glycine-tyrosine proteins (HGTPs), also known as keratin-associated proteins (KAPs), play a key role in the major structures and mechanical properties of wool fiber. Sheep HGTPs consist of three multigene families: KAP6, KAP7, and KAP8 genes. Polymorphisms of these three genes have been proposed to have important effects on wool fiber traits. The aim of the present study was to identify polymorphisms of the KAP6, KAP7, and KAP8 genes in four sheep breeds, including Chinese Merino superfine wool sheep, Hu sheep, a Merino x Hu crossed breed, and Romney sheep. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) product direct sequencing, PCR-single-strand conformation polymorphism, and cloned sequencing methods were used to find genetic variation and identify polymorphisms in these genes. The Mutation Surveyor v3.97 software was used to analyze the sequences. These methods revealed six different sequences of the KAP6 gene, two different sequences of the KAP7 gene, and five different sequences of the KAP8 gene. Accordingly, three (with frequencies>1%) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the KAP6 gene, one SNP of the KAP7 gene, and five SNPs of the KAP8 gene were detected. Interestingly, some of these sequences were present in only certain sheep breeds, thereby suggesting that these special allele sequences could be used as candidate genes of wool characteristics in further studies.

Abstract
Fusarium crown rot (FCR) is a serious cereal disease in semi-arid regions worldwide. In assisting the effort of breeding cultivars with enhanced resistance, we identified several barley genotypes with high levels of FCR resistance. One of these genotypes, AWCS079 which is a barley landrace originating from Japan, was investigated by developing and assessing three populations of recombinant inbred lines. Two QTL, one located on the long arm of chromosome 1H (designated as Qcrs.cpi-1H) and the other on 3HL (designated as Qcrs.cpi-3H), were found to be responsible for the FCR resistance of this genotype. Qcrs.cpi-1H is novel as no other FCR loci have been reported on this chromosome arm. Qcrs.cpi-3H co-located with a reduced height (Rht) locus and the effectiveness of the former was significantly affected by the latter. The total phenotypic variance explained by these two QTL was over 60 %. Significant effects were detected for each of the QTL in each of the three populations assessed. The existence of these loci with major effects should not only facilitate breeding and exploitation of FCR-resistant barley cultivars but also their further characterization based on fine mapping and map-based gene cloning.

Abstract
A set of 72 microsatellite markers distributed evenly among 24 linkage groups were selected from the published genetic linkage maps of Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. In two normal diploid full-sib families, the test for Mendelian inheritance showed that genotypic segregation deviations were not significant at all analysed loci. To estimate microsatellite-centromere map distances, four meiotic gynogenetic diploid lines were produced by the activation of eggs using UV irradiated sperm of red seabream Pagrus major and cold-shock treatment to block the extrusion of the second polar body. Under the assumption of complete interference, 21 markers were located in the centromeric region, 39 in the telomeric region and the rest in the intermediate region of linkage groups. A total of 192 mitotic gynogenetic diploids from one spawn were identified by these markers. Genotype analysis showed that the number of homozygous individuals decreased as microsatellite-centromere map distance increased on each linkage group.

Abstract
Mastitis affects the concentrations of potassium and sodium in milk. Since sodium-potassium adenosine triphosphatase (Na(+), K(+)-ATPase) is critical for maintaining the homeostasis of these two ions, and is involved in cell apoptosis and pathogenesis, we presumed that polymorphism of the ATP1A1 gene, which encodes the bovine Na(+), K(+)-ATPase α1 subunit could be associated with mastitis. The ATP1A1 gene was analyzed in 320 Holstein cows using PCR low ionic strength single-strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-LIS-SSCP) and DNA sequencing methods. A C/A SNP was identified at nucleotide position -15,739 in exon 17 of the ATP1A1 gene, but it did not induce any change in amino acids. We examined a possible association of polymorphism of the ATP1A1 gene with somatic cell score and 305-day milk yields. Individuals with genotype CC in ATP1A1 had significantly lower somatic cell scores and 305-day milk yields than those with genotype CA. We also examined changes in Na(+), K(+)-ATPase activity of red cell membranes. The Na(+), K(+)-ATPase activity was significantly higher in dairy cows with genotype CC compared to the other two genotypes, and the Na(+), K(+)-ATPase activity of the resistant group was significantly higher than that of the susceptible group in dairy cows. We conclude that this polymorphism has potential as a marker for mastitis resistance in dairy cattle.

Abstract
We explored a genetic detection method for Treponema pallidum (TP) in the peripheral blood of infected patients to compare the loads of treponemal DNA before and after therapy and to see if this new technique enabled assessment of therapeutic effect and detection of serum resistance. Polymerase chain reaction was used for a qualitative detection of TP DNA in peripheral blood and then a semiquantitative method was adopted to estimate the load of TP DNA in blood, both before and after treatment of syphilis. Among 30 untreated patients, three cases were TP DNA-positive. Among 42 treated patients with demonstrated serum resistance, three cases were TP DNA-positive. Five cases in which the rapid plasma reagin had become negative had no detectable TP DNA in their peripheral blood. The TP DNA load in blood after treatment was significantly lower than that before therapy. We conclude that the detection of TP DNA in peripheral blood of TP-infected patients is not yet sufficiently sensitive, but we observed that TP DNA load declines significantly after treatment.

Abstract
The long lasting blue phosphorescence (LLP) and photostimulated luminescence (PSL) after ultraviolet light irradiation at room temperature in 12CaO 7Al2O3:xEu2+, yMn2+ (x = 0, 0.001; y = 0, 0.01) prepared by the chemical co-precipitation method were observed. It was shown that novel oxide 12CaO 7Al2O3:Eu2+, Mn2+ (C12A7:Eu2+, Mn2+) with unique nanocage structure can store energy when irradiated with 365 nm photons. And photon energy can be subsequently released by exposed to 980 nm light. The codopant Mn2+ enhances the intensity of the persistent phosphorescence and PSL due to the existence of more shallow and new deeper electron traps in C12A7: Eu2+, Mn2+. A model for energy storing and recovering and the detailed mechanism of PSL are presented through comparing with the luminescence properties of the co-doped C12A7:Eu2+, Mn2+ and C12A7:Eu2+.

Abstract
Eu3+ ions doped 12CaO 7Al2O3 (C12A7) powders with different Eu3+ concentrations were prepared by sol-gel combined with solid state reaction method. The results of XRD and Raman spectra showed that single cubic phase polycrystalline C12A7:Eu3+ powders were prepared. The absorption peaks attributed to f-f transition of Eu3+ ion can be observed, indicating that Eu3+ had been incorporated into C12A7 lattice site. Visible PL peaks around 578, 588, 614 nm were ascribed to 5D0 --> 7FJ (J = 0, 1, 2) transitions of Eu3+ under the excitation of 488 nm line. The PL of C12A7:Eu3+ showed the strongest emission intensity at Eu3+ concentration of 0.5 at%. Two different types of Eu3+ centers were identified by the two lines from 5D0 --> 7F0 transition emission. The doping mechanism of C12A7:Eu3+ might be attributed to Eu3+ ions substitution for two types of Ca2+ lattice sites in C12A7. The temperature dependent PL spectra of Eu-doped C12A7 were measured in the range from 100 to 300 K under the excitation of 488 nm laser line. The PL intensities as a function of temperature were well fitted by using a unified theoretical model, considering thermal activation and nonradiative energy transfer processes.

Abstract
We presented our investigations on the absorption and emission properties of the nanocrystalline ZnO particles of different particle sizes (2 nm-5 nm) by sol-gel method. In the room temperature PL spectra, three emission bands, ultraviolet (UV), blue and green were observed. With increasing the particle sizes, both the UV and the visible emission bands shifted to lower energies progressively. From the size-dependency, there was a linear relationship between the energetic maxima of the UV and the green emission bands with a slope of about 0.26, which indicated that the green luminescence of ZnO was produced by the transitions of electrons from deep level to the valence band (or shallow acceptor level). A linear dependence was also found between the energetic maxima of the UV and the blue emissions with a slope of 0.15, the origin this blue emission band is not clear at present. While in van Dijken et al.'s paper, however, they identified only two emission bands in the emission spectra, an UV and a broad visible emission band, and the linear fit between the energetic maxima of these two bands in particles of different sizes has a slope of 0.6, so they proposed that the visible emission in ZnO was originated from the recombination of a shallowly trapped electron with a deeply trapped hole. We attributed this divergence to the fact that the broad visible band is actually composed of two separate emission bands originated from two different recombination processes, and should not had been treated as one emission band.

Abstract
The novel green-emitting phosphors of 12CaO 7Al2O3:Ce3+ , Tb3+ (C12A7:Ce3+, Tb3+) were synthesized by a solid-state reaction. Upon the excitation of Ce3+ at 350 nm, the C12A7:Ce3+, Tb3+ phosphor shows intense green emissions located at 543 nm assigning to 5D4-7F5 transitions of Tb3+ ions, and weak blue emissions centered at 434 nm due to the transitions of Ce3+ 5d-4f. The photoluminescence (PL) intensity of Ce3+ decrease with increasing Tb3+ concentration, indicating the effective energy transfer (ET) occurred from Ce3+ to Tb3+ in C12A7:Ce3+, Tb3+. The ET efficiency between Ce3+ and Tb3+ in the optimum composition reaches to 99%. Based on Dexter's ET theory, we have demonstrated that the efficient ET is a resonant type via dipole-dipole mechanism with an energy transfer critical distance of 4.02 A. Our results suggested that C12A7:Ce3+, Tb3+ phosphor would be a promising green-emitting phosphor for UV-converting white light-emitting diodes.

Abstract
Effects of plant height on Fusarium crown rot (FCR) disease severity were investigated using 12 pairs of near-isogenic lines (NILs) for six different reduced height (Rht) genes in wheat. The dwarf isolines all gave better FCR resistance when compared with their respective tall counterparts, although the Rht genes involved in these NILs are located on several different chromosomes. Treating plants with exogenous gibberellin increased FCR severity as well as seedling lengths in all of the isolines tested. Analysis of the expression of several defense genes with known correlation with resistance to FCR pathogens between the Rht isolines following FCR inoculation indicated that the better resistance of the dwarf isolines was not due to enhanced defense gene induction. These results suggested that the difference in FCR severity between the tall and dwarf isolines is likely due to their height difference per se or to some physiological and structural consequences of reduced height. Thus, caution should be taken when considering to exploit any FCR locus located near a height gene.

Abstract
Heat stress produces oxidative stress and affects the alternation of plasma K(+) and Na(+). Since Na(+),K(+)-ATPase is sensitive to oxidative stress and critical for maintaining the homeostasis of these two ions, we examined the genetic polymorphism of the ATP1A1 gene in 160 Holstein cows using polymerase chain reaction low ionic strength single-strand conformation polymorphism and DNA sequencing methods. G to A at position -14103 in exon 14 and C to T at position -14242 in intron 14 of the bovine ATP1A1 gene were identified, but the former single nucleotide polymorphism was silent with respect to the amino acid sequence of the protein. However, we found significant correlations between ATP1A1 gene polymorphism and the coefficient of heat tolerance (P<0.01) and with respiratory rate (P<0.01). Genotype AC was the most favorable genotype for heat tolerance. This polymorphism site has potential as a genetic marker for heat tolerance traits in dairy cattle breeding.

Abstract
Crown rot (CR), caused by various Fusarium species, is a chronic wheat disease in Australia. As part of our objective of improving the efficiency of breeding CR resistant wheat varieties, we have been searching for novel sources of resistance. This paper reports on the genetic control of one of these newly identified resistant genotypes, 'CSCR6'. A population derived from a cross between CSCR6 and an Australian variety 'Lang' was analyzed using two Fusarium isolates belonging to two different species, one Fusarium pseudograminearum and the other Fusarium graminearum. The two isolates detected QTL with the same chromosomal locations and comparable magnitudes, indicating that CR resistance is not species-specific. The resistant allele of one of the QTL was derived from 'CSCR6'. This QTL, designated as Qcrs.cpi-3B, was located on the long arm of chromosome 3B and explains up to 48.8% of the phenotypic variance based on interval mapping analysis. Another QTL, with resistant allele from the variety 'Lang', was located on chromosome 4B. This QTL explained up to 22.8% of the phenotypic variance. A strong interaction between Qcsr.cpi-3B and Qcsr.cpi-4B was detected, reducing the maximum effect of Qcrs.cpi-3B to 43.1%. The effects of Qcrs.cpi-3B were further validated in four additional populations and the presence of this single QTL reduced CR severity by up to 42.1%. The fact that significant effects of Qcrs.cpi-3B were detected across all trials with different genetic backgrounds and with the use of isolates belonging to two different Fusarium species make it an ideal target for breeding programs as well as for further characterization of the gene(s) involved in its resistance.

Abstract
Tb-doped 12CaO x 7Al2O3 (C12A7:Tb3+) powders with strong green emission were prepared using the sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectra, scanning electron microscopy and absorption spectra showed that C12A7:Tb3+ powders with grain size of 200-300 nm were synthesized. Porous powders could be formed as the concentration of Tb3+ was 5 at%. The absorption band around 209 nm was attributed to the host lattice absorption, and the bands around 255 nm and 274 nm were related to the 4f-5d transitions of Tb3+. The absorption intensity of the visible region was enhanced due to the presence of one 100 nm-diameter hole in every grain of C12A7:Tb3+ powders. The emission spectra showed noticeable influence of Tb-Tb cross relaxation, which favored the green photoluminescence (PL) over the blue PL. The study on the concentration quenching indicated that the energy transfers depopulating the 5D3 and 5D4 levels were assigned to the mechanisms of electric dipole-dipole and exchange interaction, respectively.

Abstract
The visible luminescence mechanism of ZnO is an important but controversial problem. In this paper, we report the structural and optical properties of Mg-doped ZnO nanoparticles (approximately 3-4 nm) synthesized via the sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and absorption spectra observations revealed that Mg ions replace Zn ions in the lattice. In the room temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra, three emission bands, ultraviolet (UV), blue, and green, were observed. With increasing concentration of Mg, the near band edge (NBE) emission band progressively shifted to the higher energy side. The green emission in the visible emission band, however, presented an inconspicuous shift. The reason is probably that the bottom of the conduction band in ZnO is determined by the Zn 4s state, and the top of the valence band is determined by the O 2p state. Mg ions in ZnO substitute for zinc ions and enter a slightly distorted tetrahedral site, which causes the bottom of the ZnO conduction band to be shifted to higher energy and leaves the top of the valence band unchanged. This combined with the fact that the deep level position is insensitive to the shift of the band edge led us to conclude that the green emission originates from electronic transition between the deep defect level and the top of the valence band (or very shallow acceptor level).

Abstract
Tourmaline nanoparticles were prepared by using a wet mechanochemisty method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that the tourmaline grain size is in the range from tens of nanometers to several hundred nanometers. Through characterization by Fourier transform infrared spectroscope, it was found that the milled tourmaline had a better far infrared emitting performance due to the increase of radiation surface area. The structure change of liquid water clusters induced by the addition of tourmaline nanoparticles was observed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The results showed that the addition of tourmaline nanoparticles reduced the 17O NMR full width at half maximum intensity (FWHM) for treated water and the volume of water molecule clusters. The feature of activated water was enhanced with decreasing tourmaline nanoparticles size due to the cooperation of strong surface electric field and high far infrared emissivity. Moreover the activation time can be maintained at 480 h suggesting the potential application of tourmaline in wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Room temperature ferromagnetic Cu-doped ZnO nanowires have been synthesized using the chemical vapor deposition method. By combining structural characterizations and comparative annealing experiments, it has been found that both extrinsic (CuO nanoparticles) and intrinsic (Zn(1-x)Cu(x)O nanowires) sources are responsible for the observed ferromagnetic ordering of the as-grown samples. As regards the former, annealing in Zn vapor led to a dramatic decrease of the ferromagnetism. For the latter, a reversible switching of the ferromagnetism was observed with sequential annealings in Zn vapor and oxygen ambience respectively, which agreed well with previous reports for Cu-doped ZnO films. In addition, we have for the first time observed low temperature photoluminescence changed with magnetic properties upon annealing in different conditions, which revealed the crucial role played by interstitial zinc in directly mediating high T(c) ferromagnetism and indirectly modulating the Cu-related structured green emission via different charge transfer transitions.

Abstract
The hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) incidence rate still holds in high level in some areas of the world, but a reliable and simple typing method that can be used in clinical diagnosis and epidemiologic surveys is not available. In this study, 48 serum samples were collected from patients with HFRS in Linyi area, China, that is seriously affected by this disease. The collected samples were analyzed by nested RT-PCR combined with single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) for genotyping of hantaviruses (HV). Out of 48 serum samples, 41 samples were positive by the nested RT-PCR. According to the SSCP patterns, Seoul virus (SEOV) was found in 33 samples and Hantaan virus (HTNV) in 8 samples. The comparison of sequence identities of nested RT-PCR products of tested samples with reference isolates SEOV and HTNV supported the typing results. Thus, genotyping of HV by nested RT-PCR/SSCP is suitable in early diagnosis of HV infection and in epidemiologic surveys.

Abstract
It has been verified that carvedilol can attenuate myocardial no-reflow. However, the effects of carvedilol on adenosine triphosphate-sensitive K+ (KATP) channel and endothelin-1 (ET-1) are unknown. Forty mini-swines were randomized into 5 study groups: 8 control, 8 carvedilol pretreatment, 8 glibenclamide (KATP channel blocker)-treated, 8 carvedilol and glibenclamide-pre-treated and 8 sham-operated. An acute myocardial infarction(AMI) and reperfusion model was created with a three-hour occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery followed by one-hour reperfusion. Compared with the control group, carvedilol significantly decreased the area of no-reflow (myocardial contrast echocardiography: from 78.5±4.5% to 24.9±4.1%, pathological means: from 82.3±1.9% to 25.8±4.3% of ligation area, respectively; all p < 0.01) and reduced necrosis size from 98.5±1.3% to 74.4±4.7% of ligation area, p < 0.05). It also decreased plasma ET-1 and myocardial tissue ET-1. However, glibenclamide abrogated the protective effect of carvedilol. The beneficial effect of carvedilol on myocardial no-reflow could be due to its effect on ET-1 via the activation of the KATP channel.

Abstract
Two approaches were undertaken to characterize the arsenic (As) content of Chinese rice. First, a national market basket survey (n = 240) was conducted in provincial capitals, sourcing grain from China's premier rice production areas. Second, to reflect rural diets, paddy rice (n = 195) directly from farmers fields were collected from three regions in Hunan, a key rice producing province located in southern China. Two of the sites were within mining and smeltery districts, and the third was devoid of large-scale metal processing industries. Arsenic levels were determined in all the samples while a subset (n = 33) were characterized for As species, using a new simple and rapid extraction method suitable for use with Hamilton PRP-X100 anion exchange columns and HPLC-ICP-MS. The vast majority (85%) of the market rice grains possessed total As levels < 150 ng g(-1). The rice collected from mine-impacted regions, however, were found to be highly enriched in As, reaching concentrations of up to 624 ng g(-1). Inorganic As (As(i)) was the predominant species detected in all of the speciated grain, with As(i) levels in some samples exceeding 300 ng g(-1). The As(i) concentration in polished and unpolished Chinese rice was successfully predicted from total As levels. The mean baseline concentrations for As(i) in Chinese market rice based on this survey were estimated to be 96 ng g(-1) while levels in mine-impacted areas were higher with ca. 50% of the rice in one region predicted to fail the national standard.

Abstract
Er(3+)-doped 12CaO x 7Al2O3 (C12A7:Er3+) powders were prepared using the sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectra and absorption spectra showed that C12A7:Er3+ powder had been obtained. Sharp and intense Er(3+)-related emission from C12A7:Er3+ powder with different Er3+ concentrations in the visible region at room temperature was investigated by analyzing the local structure of Ca atoms in C12A7, and it revealed that cation sites with low symmetry of the host were beneficial to the photoluminescence of Er3+ ions. The emission lines were attributed to two types of Er3+ centers, isolated Er3+ ions and complex centers formed by aggregation of Er3+ ions. The PL intensity might be affected by free oxygen species relative to Er3+ ions formed by charge compensation. The inverse temperature dependent luminescence from the upper level of 2H11/2 state and that from the lower level of 4S3/2 state implied that the thermalization or thermal equilibrium of electrons between the two closely emission states occurred.

Abstract
1. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of magnesium (Mg) on reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in the thigh muscles of broiler chickens. A total of 96 1-d-old male Arbor Acre broiler chickens were randomly allocated into two groups, fed either on low-Mg or control diets containing about 1.2 g/kg or 2.4 g Mg/kg dry matter. 2. The low-Mg diet significantly increased malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration and decreased glutathione (GSH) in the thigh muscles of broiler chickens. ROS production in the thigh muscle homogenate was significantly higher in the low-Mg group than in the control group. Compared with the control, muscle Mg concentration of broiler chickens from the low-Mg group decreased by 9.5%. 3. Complex II and III activities of the mitochondrial electron transport chain in broilers on low-Mg diet increased by 23 and 35%, respectively. Significant negative correlations between ROS production and the activities of mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) complexes were observed. 4. The low-Mg diet did not influence contents of iron (Fe) or calcium (Ca) in the thigh muscles of broiler chickens and did not influence unsaturated fatty acid composition (except C18:2) in the thigh muscles. 5. A low-Mg diet decreased Mg concentration in the thigh muscles of broiler chickens and then induced higher activities of mitochondrial ETC, consequently increasing ROS production. These results suggest that Mg modulates the oxidation-anti-oxidation system of the thigh muscles at least partly through affecting ROS production.

Abstract
Radix Angelica sinensis, known as Danggui in Chinese, has been used to treat cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases in Traditional Chinese Medicine for a long time. Modern phytochemical studies showed that Z-ligustilide (LIG) is the main lipophilic component of Danggui. In this study, we examined whether LIG could protect ischemia/reperfusion-induced brain injury by minimizing oxidative stress and anti-apoptosis. Transient forebrain cerebral ischemia (FCI) was induced by the bilateral common carotid arteries occlusion for 30 min. LIG was intraperitoneally injected to ICR mice at the beginning of reperfusion. As determined via 2,3,5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining at 24 h following ischemia, the infarction volume in the FCI mice treated without LIG (22.1 +/- 2.6%) was significantly higher than that in the FCI mice treated with 5 mg/kg (11.8 +/- 5.2%) and 20 mg/kg (2.60 +/- 1.5%) LIG (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). LIG treatment significantly decreased the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) and increased the activities of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the ischemic brain tissues (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01 vs. FCI group). In addition, LIG provided a great increase in Bcl-2 expression as well as a significant decrease in Bax and caspase-3 immunoreactivities in the ischemic cortex. The findings demonstrated that LIG could significantly protect the brain from damage induced by transient forebrain cerebral ischemia. The antioxidant and anti-apoptotic properties of LIG may contribute to the neuroprotective potential of LIG in cerebral ischemic damage.

Abstract
Legendre polynomials of orders 3 to 8 in random regression models (RRM) for first-lactation milk production in Canadian Holsteins were compared statistically to determine the best model. Twenty-six RRM were compared using LP of order 5 for the phenotypic age-season groupings. Variance components of RRM were estimated using Bayesian estimation via Gibbs sampling. Several statistical criteria for model comparison were used including the total residual variance, the log likelihood function, Akaike's information criterion, the Bayesian information criterion, Bayes factors, an information-theoretic measure of model complexity, and the percentage relative reduction in complexity. The residual variance always picks the model with the most parameters. The log likelihood and information-theoretic measure picked the model with order 5 for additive genetic effects and order 7 for permanent environmental effects. The currently used model in Canada (order 5 for both additive and permanent environmental effects) was not the best for any single criterion, but was optimal when considering all criteria.

Abstract
The Zn(1-x)Mn(x)O (x = 0, 0.16, and 0.25) thin films were grown on fused quartz substrates by reactive magnetron cosputtering. X-ray-diffraction measurement revealed that all the films were single phase and had wurtzite structure with c-axis orientation. As Mn concentration increased in the Zn(1-x)Mn(x)O films, the c-axis lattice constant and band-gap energy increased gradually. In Raman-scattering studies, an additional Mn-related vibration mode appeared at 520 cm(-1). E(2H) phonon line of Zn(1-x)Mn(x)O alloy was broadened asymmetrically and redshifted as a result of microscopic structural disorder induced by Mn(2+) random substitution. The Zn(0.84)Mn(0.16)O film exhibited a ferromagnetic characteristic with a Curie temperature of approximately 62 K. However, with increasing Mn concentration to 25 at. %, ferromagnetism disappeared due to the enhanced antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions between neighboring Mn(2+) ions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Traditional herbal therapies have been used for a long time to treat gastrointestinal disorders including irritable bowel syndrome, and their effectiveness from clinical research evidence needs to be systematically reviewed. OBJECTIVES To assess the effectiveness and safety of herbal medicines in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. SEARCH STRATEGY We searched the following electronic databases till July 2004: The Cochrane Library (CENTRAL), MEDLINE, EMBASE, AMED, LILACS, the Chinese Biomedical Database, combined with hand searches of Chinese journals and conference proceedings till end of 2003. No language restriction was used. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised controlled trials of herbal medicines compared with no treatment, placebo, pharmacological interventions were included. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Data were extracted independently by two authors. The methodological quality of trials was evaluated using the components of randomisation, allocation concealment, double blinding, and inclusion of randomised participants. MAIN RESULTS Seventy-five randomised trials, involving 7957 participants with irritable bowel syndrome, met the inclusion criteria. The methodological quality of three double-blind, placebo-controlled trials was high, but the quality of remaining trials was generally low. Seventy-one different herbal medicines were tested in the included trials, in which herbal medicines were compared with placebo or conventional pharmacologic therapy. Herbal medicines were also combined with conventional therapy and compared to conventional therapy alone.Compared with placebo, a Standard Chinese herbal formula, individualised Chinese herbal medicine, STW 5 and STW 5-II, Tibetan herbal medicine Padma Lax, traditional Chinese formula Tongxie Yaofang, and Ayurvedic preparation showed significantly improvement of global symptoms. Compared with conventional therapy in 65 trials testing 51 different herbal medicines, 22 herbal medicines demonstrated a statistically significant benefit for symptom improvement, and 29 herbal medicines were not significantly different than conventional therapy. In nine trials that evaluated herbal medicine combined with conventional therapy, six tested herbal preparations showed additional benefit from the combination therapy compared with conventional monotherapy. No serious adverse events from the herbal medicines were reported. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS Some herbal medicines may improve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. However, positive findings from less rigorous trials should be interpreted with caution due to inadequate methodology, small sample sizes, and lack of confirming data. Some herbal medicines deserve further examination in high-quality trials.

Abstract
Radiological images are commonly used as important tools in medical diagnoses and treatment. Different modalities of medical images provide uniquely different content. Hence, it is natural and desirable to combine different image modalities to obtain additional new information to enhance clinical assessment. However, given the current technology, radiological images are not always sufficiently informative to permit diagnosis and treatment. In order to address this problem, we fused selected portions of the Chinese Visible Human (CVH) dataset with MRI images from a patient. Specifically, we segmented the caudate nucleus, the lentiform nucleus, and the thalamus in the CVH dataset and then registered and fused this dataset with corresponding MRI images using both rigid and nonrigid registration techniques. After rigid and nonrigid registration, the CVH and MRI images largely coincided with each other. The shape, relationship, and position of focal areas and neural structures were clearly displayed. Using volume and surface rendering, these images were three-dimensionally reconstructed to display the neural structures of interest within the brain. These structures can be rotated at will and observed from different angles. Our research indicates that the fusion of CVH and patients' MRI images can enhance the amount of neural information available to physicians and lay a foundation for the clinical use of the CVH dataset.

Abstract
Placental development involves trophoblast outgrowth and a coordinated angiogenesis in the implantation site. In this study, expression of angiogenic factors, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), VEGF receptors, kinase insert domain-containing region (KDR), and bFGF receptor Flg was characterized at the maternal-embryonic boundary of the rhesus monkey on Day 17, 19, 28 and 34 of pregnancy. Immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization showed that VEGF mRNA and protein were both strongly expressed in the cytotrophoblast, the blood vessels and certain immunocytes. These sites were also immunopositive for KDR. In addition to the vascular endothelial cells and the vascular smooth muscle cells, the protein and mRNA for bFGF were also detected in cyto/syncytiotrophoblast bilayer, whereas the staining for Flg protein was mainly localized in the cytotrophoblast cells. The staining degree of VEGF and bFGF in the villi gradually decreased with the development of placenta. Strong expression of bFGF, Flg and KDR was also detected in the decidual cells. These data suggest that VEGF and bFGF may be involved in angiogenesis, cytotrophoblast proliferation and migration during early stage of placentation in the rhesus monkey.

Abstract
Two antibacterial and xanthine oxidase inhibitory cerebrosides, one of which is chemically new, were characterized from the chloroform-methanol (1:1) extract of Fusarium sp. IFB-121, an endophytic fungus in Quercus variabilis. By means of chemical and spectral methods [IR, electrospray ionization MS (ESI-MS), tandem ESI-MS, 1H and 13C NMR, distortionless enhancement by polarization transfer, COSY, heteronuclear multiple-quantum coherence, heteronuclear multiple-bond correlation, and 2-D nuclear Overhauser effect correlation spectroscopy], the structure of the new metabolite named fusaruside was established as (2S,2'R,3R,3'E,4E,8E,10E)-1-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-2-N-(2'-hydroxy-3'-octadecenoyl)-3-hydroxy-9-methyl-4,8,10-sphingatrienine, and the structure of the other was identified as (2S,2'R,3R,3'E,4E,8E)-1-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-2-N-(2'-hydroxy-3'-octadecenoyl)-3-hydroxy-9-methyl-4,8-sphingadienine. Both new and known cerebrosides, although inactive to Trichophyton rubrum and Candida albicans, showed strong antibacterial activities against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas fluorescens, with their minimum inhibitory concentrations being 3.9, 3.9, and 1.9 microg/mL, and 7.8, 3.9, and 7.8 microg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, both metabolites were inhibitory to xanthine oxidase, with the IC50 value of fusaruside being 43.8 +/- 3.6 microM and the known cerebroside being 55.5 +/- 1.8 microM.

Abstract
To set up a T-Ag gene transfected stable human umbilical venous endothelial cells (HUVECs) cell line and a T-Ag, nuclear transcriptional factor kappa B (NF-kappaB) binding elements linked with luciferase reporter gene co-transfected stable HUVECs cell line. Cultured HUVECs were transfected with pCI-neo-T-Ag and pRSV-luc-3XkappaB by lipofectin. The G418 selected monoclones were subcultured. The expression of marker protein, vWF and the characteristic of uptake of lipids were compared by Western blotting and immunocytochemistry in non-transfected and transfected HUVECs. The reporter gene assay was done in the presence of TNF-alpha. A T-Ag gene transfected stable HUVECs cell line and a T-Ag and NF-kappaB binding elements linked with luciferase reporter gene co-transfected stable HUVECs cell lines were set up. The expression of vWF of these cell lines was similar with those in non-transformed HUVECs. The function of uptaking of lipids was preserved as well in transfected cell lines. Furthermore, TNF-alpha, a typical cytokine increasing the activity of NF-kappaB was used to treat the transfected cells O/N. The higher luciferase reporter gene activity was seen. A pCI-neo-T-Ag and pRSV-luc-3X kappaB co-transfected stable HUVECs cell line might be used to check reporter gene activity directly. It might be a useful tool to screen drugs acting on transcription level.

Abstract
Apoptosis is a normal physiological phenomenon. During the process of implantation, there are a large number of cells at the implantation site undergoing apoptosis, which has been suggested to play an important role in the regulation of endometrium decidulization and trophoblast invasion. Apoptosis mediated by Fas/FasL system may also be associated with maternal immunotolerance to the fetus. In this review, the common pathway of apoptosis and the regulation in the placenta are described.

Abstract
We investigated the possible role of Hsp70-2 in germ cell apoptosis induced by heat stress in monkey unilateral cryptorchid testis. The study focused on in situ analysis of the testicular cell DNA fragmentation and on the possible relationship between Hsp70-2 expression and germ cell apoptosis. The TUNEL result showed that most of the germ cells were labeled in the cryptorchid testis on d 5 after induction of cryptorchidism; that with most of the apoptotic germ cells depleted, only a few germ cells were labeled on d 10; and that almost no apoptotic signal was observed in the cryptorchid testis on d 15 and thereafter. This indicates that the increasing germ cell degeneration in cryptorchid testis may take the form of apoptosis. Using in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, and Northern blot, we examined the changes of Hsp70-2 expression in the monkey cryptorchid testis. The level of Hsp70-2 mRNA decreased slightly, while the expression of HSP70-2 protein was almost unchanged at the early stage of germ cell apoptosis in the cryptorchid testis on d 5 and dropped dramatically along with the loss of apoptotic germ cells in the cryptorchid testis on d 10 after operation. It is therefore suggested that Hsp70-2 might not take part in inhibiting the apoptosis of germ cells at the early stage during operation-induced cryptorchid testis, and that Hsp70-2 gene does not belong to the immediate early related gene responsible for germ cell apoptosis induced by heat stress.

Abstract
AIM To investigate role of apoptosis related genes Fas/FasL in azoospermia or oligozoospermia induced by testosterone undecanoate. METHODS TUNEL was used to detect the apoptotic signal of testicular cells. Immunohistochemistry and Western blot were used to quantitatively or qualitatively analyze the expression of these apoptosis-related proteins. RESULTS After injection of testosterone undecanoate, both the apoptotic signal in germ cells and the expression of Fas/FasL in testis increased correlatively in a time-dependent manner, reaching a maximum level on day 30. CONCLUSION Fas system may initiate and regulate the germ cell apoptosis induced by testosterone undecanoate.

Abstract
We have examined the expression of MMP-2, TIMP-1, and TIMP-3 mRNA at the implantation site of rhesus monkeys during early stage of pregnancy using in situ hybridization and Northern blot analysis. The results indicate that MMP-2 mRNA was mainly localized in the chorinoic villi and epithelial plaque, suggesting that MMP-2 may be involved in the process of epithelial plaque and trophoblast invasion. TIMP-3 was specifically expressed in the cells around the spiral arteries and maternal-fetal interface. Therefore, TIMP-3 may be the main inhibitor that restricts the trophoblast invasion. The TIMP-1 mRNA was detected in trophoblast villi and maternal decidua; however, its distribution was not cell-specific, suggesting a general role in the protection of trophoblast villi and maternal decidua from proteolysis by the MMPs secreted by themselves.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the relationship between Thr663Ala polymorphism in amiloride-sensitive epithelial sodium channel alpha-subunit (alpha-ENaC) gene and ischemic stroke in Chinese population. METHODS Two hundred and ninety-four patients with cerebral infarction and 280 controls without stroke were screened by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and corresponding Thr663Ala polymorphism probe hybridization. RESULTS Thr663Ala polymorphism was in agreement with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Both the carriers proportion (70.75%) and the frequency (48.64%) of 663Ala allele in patients were more prevalent than that in controls (62.86% and 40.89%) (P < 0.05). The presence of at least one 663Ala allele conferred an odds ratio for stroke of 1.429 (95%CI: 1.009-2.025), and the proportion of attributable risk of population (PAR%) was 11.63%. CONCLUSION Thr 663Ala polymorphism of alpha-ENaC gene may be a genetic risk of ischemic stroke in Chinese population.

Abstract
Expression of adhesion molecule in low-grade B-cell mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma of the gastrointestinal tract has been reported in recent years, but these reports have primarily focused on low-grade gastrointestinal MALT lymphoma. In this study, we examined the lymphocytic homing receptor alpha4beta7 integrin, L-selectin, and VLA-4 and mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule-1 (MAdCAM-1) in low-grade lymphoma of the gastrointestinal tract and other organs such as the ocular adnexa and thyroid. We also observed changes in the expression pattern associated with high-grade transformation. Neoplastic cells in the gastrointestinal low-grade lymphoma and the low-grade component of high-grade MALT lymphoma were found to be alpha4beta7 integrin(+), L-selectin(+), whereas the gastrointestinal high-grade component and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma were found to be alpha4beta7 integrin(-), L-selectin(-). High endothelial venules in the gastric MALT lymphomas expressed MAdCAM-1. In the ocular adnexa low-grade MALT lymphoma, most cases were alpha4beta7 integrin(-), L-selectin(+); and in the thyroid, most cases of both low- and high-grade MALT lymphoma were alpha4beta7 integrin(-), L-selectin(-). These findings show that alpha4beta7 integrin and L-selectin may play an important role in the lymphocyte homing of gastrointestinal low-grade MALT lymphoma and in the loss of alpha4beta7 integrin expression throughout the course of high-grade progression.
