Abstract
In the title hydrated symetrically substituted 1,3-bis(4-methylbenzyl)benzimidazolium salt, C23H23N2+·Br−·H2O, the dihedral angles between the benzimidazole ring system (r.m.s. deviation = 0.003 Å) and the pendant benzene rings are 73.18 (16) and 77.52 (16)°. Both benzene rings lie to the same side of the benzimidazole ring system, giving the cation an overall U-shape. In the crystal, the cation is linked to the water molecule by a short C—H⋯O hydrogen bond and the water molecule forms O—H⋯Br hydrogen bonds. Together, these interactions lead to [010] chains. The packing is consolidated by C—H⋯Br hydrogen bonds and aromatic π–π stacking interactions [centroid–centroid distances = 3.5401 (17) and 3.8815 (18) Å], generating a three-dimensional network.

Abstract
In the title compound, C15H11ClN2O4, the central β-lactam ring is approximately planar [maximum deviation = 0.044 (2) Å for the N atom from the mean plane] and subtends dihedral angles of 61.17 (11) and 40.21 (12) °, respectively, with the nitro and chlorobenzene rings. Both substituents lie to the same side of the β-lactam core. In the crystal, N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the molecules into C(4) chains propagating in [010]. The chains are cross-linked by C—H⋯O and weak C—H⋯π interactions, generating a three-dimensional network. The solvent molecules were found to be highly disordered and their contribution to the scattering was removed with the SQUEEZE procedure in PLATON [Spek (2009 ▸). Acta Cryst. D65, 148–155], which indicated a solvent cavity of volume 318 Å3 containing approximately 114 electrons. These solvent molecules are not considered in the given chemical formula and other crystal data.

Abstract
We assessed the prognostic value of the platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI). Patients (n = 440) with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) who underwent pPCI were divided into 2 groups: low PLR (<137) and high PLR (>137). "Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction" (TIMI) flow grades and Syntax scores (SXS) were calculated from initial angiograms. In-hospital mortality rate and cardiac adverse events were obtained from medical records. Patients with high PLR had more no-reflow, higher SXS and higher mortality rate (p < 0.001, p < 0.001 and p = 0.008, respectively). In receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, high PLR predicted development of no-reflow (specificity 71% and sensitivity 85%), SXS>22 (specificity 52% and sensitivity 61%) and adverse events (specificity 67% and sensitivity 63%). In multivariate regression analysis, PLR was an independent risk factor for no-reflow, SXS>22 and in-hospital adverse events. In addition to PLR, we present the relationship between mean platelet volume, red cell distribution width and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and no-reflow, SXS and in-hospital adverse events.

Abstract
Objective: The heterogeneity in the degree of collateralization among patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) remains incompletely understood. We evaluated the predictors of poorly developed coronary collateral circulation (CCC) in patients with stable coronary artery disease. Methods: Current study is a retrospective study, consisting of 118 patients with poor CCC and 130 patients with good CCC. We investigated predictors of poor coronary collaterals in a cohort of 248 patients who had high-grade coronary stenosis or occlusion on their angiograms. To classify CCC, we used the Rentrop classification. Results: Patients with poorly developed CCC had significantly higher neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (N/L) compared with those with well-developed CCC, (4.2±2.8 vs. 3±3.1, p=0.001), whereas mean platelet volume, red cell distribution width and uric acid were not significantly different. Logistic regression analysis showed that N/L ratio (odds ratio 1.199, 95% confidence interval 1.045-1.375) and serum triglyceride levels [odds ratio (OR)=1.006, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.001-1.010] were independent predictors of poorly developed CCC. Conclusion: An elevated level of N/L ratio is independently associated with a significant impairment in coronary collateralization. Our findings suggest that N/L ratio is an inexpensive, universally available hematological marker for sufficiency of CCC in patients with stable coronary artery disease.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to assess subclinical left (LV) and right ventricular (RV) dysfunction novel load-independent isovolumic myocardial acceleration (IVA) derived from tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) in patient with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Methods: This study had an observational case-control design. The study included 133 subjects which were divided into two groups: 75 patients with MetS and 58 controls without MetS. MetS was defined by the presence of ≥3 criteria according to ATP-NCEP III guidelines. All the subjects underwent laboratory blood tests and complete conventional echocardiography and TDI. Student’s t, Mann-Whitney U, Pearson’s, and multiple regression analysis were used for statistical analysis. Results: There were no significant difference between two groups in terms of traditional echocardiographic parameters. The diastolic and global functions of both ventricles were significantly impaired in MetS group. The TDI-derived IVA of the LV and the RV was significantly lower in patients with MetS (3.2±0.9 vs. 4.0±1.4, p<0.001 and 2.6±0.7 vs. 3.1±0.9, p=0.001, respectively). Whereas, TDI derived systolic velocity (Sa), and peak myocardial velocity during isovolumic contraction (IVV) of both ventricles were similar between the two groups. In the multiple regression analysis, waist circumference and diastolic blood pressure were found to be an independent determinant of IVA of LV (β=-.223, 95% CI=-.034 -.002, p=0.004) and RV (β=-.527, 95% CI=-.085 -.020, p=0.002) respectively. Conclusion: MetS affects global, diastolic, and systolic functions of two ventricles. This disruption lead to decreased function of heart was related with raised risk factors of MetS

Abstract
The present study was designed to determine the effects of both Wi-Fi (2.45 GHz)- and mobile phone (900 and 1800 MHz)-induced electromagnetic radiation (EMR) on oxidative stress and trace element levels in the kidney and testis of growing rats from pregnancy to 6 weeks of age. Thirty-two rats and their 96 newborn offspring were equally divided into four different groups, namely, control, 2.45 GHz, 900 MHz, and 1800 MHz groups. The 2.45 GHz, 900 MHz, and 1,800 MHz groups were exposed to EMR for 60 min/day during pregnancy and growth. During the fourth, fifth, and sixth weeks of the experiment, kidney and testis samples were taken from decapitated rats. Results from the fourth week showed that the level of lipid peroxidation in the kidney and testis and the copper, zinc, reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and total antioxidant status (TAS) values in the kidney decreased in the EMR groups, while iron concentrations in the kidney as well as vitamin A and vitamin E concentrations in the testis increased in the EMR groups. Results for fifth-week samples showed that iron, vitamin A, and β-carotene concentrations in the kidney increased in the EMR groups, while the GSH and TAS levels decreased. The sixth week results showed that iron concentrations in the kidney and the extent of lipid peroxidation in the kidney and testis increased in the EMR groups, while copper, TAS, and GSH concentrations decreased. There were no statistically significant differences in kidney chromium, magnesium, and manganese concentrations among the four groups. In conclusion, Wi-Fi- and mobile phone-induced EMR caused oxidative damage by increasing the extent of lipid peroxidation and the iron level, while decreasing total antioxidant status, copper, and GSH values. Wi-Fi- and mobile phone-induced EMR may cause precocious puberty and oxidative kidney and testis injury in growing rats.

Abstract
AIM P wave dispersion (PWD) has been shown to be a noninvasive predictor for the development of atrial fibrillation (AF). Atorvastatin is a 3 hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMGCoA) reductase inhibitor that lowers blood cholesterol levels. The beneficial effect of atorvastatin on atrial arrhythmias is controversial. Aim of this study was to investigate the effect of atorvastatin treatment on PWD in hyperlipidemic patients. METHODS Seventy-nine newly diagnosed hyperlipidemic patients and 30 normolipidemic healthy subjects were enrolled in this study. All hyperlipidemic patients received atorvastatin 20-40 mg/ day according to their cholesterol levels and hypolipidemic diet treatment. Twelve-lead surface electrocardiogram (ECG) were recorded from hyperlipidemic patients before and after 6-months of atorvastatin therapy and from control group at their first visit. The P-wave duration measurements were calculated from these surfaces of ECG. RESULTS When pretreatment PWD, P maximum and P minimum values were compared with post-treatment values, a statistically significant decrease was found after 6 months (p less than 0.001, p=0.012 and p=0.007, respectively). CONCLUSION Atorvastatin lowered PWD significantly, so this finding may be important in the prevention of AF in hyperlipidemic patients.

Abstract
Recent studies have reported oxidative damage due to bisphosphonate (BP) in various cancer tissues and neurons, although basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) induced antioxidant effects in the cells. The bFGF may modulate the BP-induced oxidative stress in oral epithelium of rats. This study was undertaken to explore possible beneficial antioxidant effects of bFGF on oxidative stress induced by BP in oral epithelium of rats. Twenty-eight rats were equally divided into four groups. The first group was used as control. The second, third and fourth groups intraperitoneally received BP (zoledronic acid), bFGF and BP + bFGF. At the end of 10 weeks, the rats were sacrificed, and oral epithelium samples were taken for analyses. In BP group, the lipid peroxidation levels were increased in the oral epithelium, while the activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and the concentrations of total antioxidant status (TAS) were decreased. In rats treated with bFGF, lipid peroxidation levels decreased, and the activities of GSH-Px and concentrations of TAS improved in the oral epithelium. However, zinc and copper levels were decreased in the oral epithelium by BP and bFGF treatments. Concentrations of vitamin E and reduced glutathione in the samples did not change in the groups. In conclusion, treatment with bFGF modulated the antioxidant redox system and reduced the oral epithelium oxidative stress induced by BP. However, zinc and copper levels were decreased by BP and bFGF treatments.

Abstract
Zinc is an element that under physiological conditions preferentially binds to and is a potent inducer of metallothionein under physiological conditions. The present study was conducted to explore whether zinc supplementation morphologically and biochemically protects against diabetic nephropathy through modulation of kidney metallothionein induction and oxidative stress in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Thirty-two Wistar albino male rats were equally divided into four groups. The first group was used as untreated controls and the second group was supplemented with 30 mg/kg/day zinc as zinc sulfate. The third group was treated with streptozotocin to induce diabetes and the fourth group was treated with streptozotocin and supplemented with zinc as described for group 2. The blood glucose and micro-albuminuria levels, body and kidney weights were measured during the 42-day experimental period. At the end of the experiment, the kidneys were removed from all animals from the four groups. Diabetes resulted in degenerative kidney morphological changes. The metallothionein immunoreactivity level was lower and the kidney lipid peroxidation levels were higher in the diabetes group than in the controls. The metallothionein immunoreactivity levels were higher in the tubules of the zinc-supplemented diabetic rats as compared to the non-supplemented diabetic group. The zinc and metallothionein concentrations in kidney tissue were higher in the supplemented diabetic group compared to the non-supplemented diabetes group. The activity of glutathione peroxidase did not change in any of the four groups. In conclusion, the present study shows that zinc has a protective effect against diabetic damage of kidney tissue through stimulation of metallothionein synthesis and regulation of the oxidative stress.

Abstract
We aimed to investigate the protective effects of melatonin and 2.45 GHz electromagnetic radiation (EMR) on brain and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neuron antioxidant redox system, Ca(2+) influx, cell viability and electroencephalography (EEG) records in the rat. Thirty two rats were equally divided into four different groups namely group A1: Cage control, group A2: Sham control, group B: 2.45 GHz EMR, group C: 2.45 GHz EMR+melatonin. Groups B and C were exposed to 2.45 GHz EMR during 60 min/day for 30 days. End of the experiments, EEG records and the brain cortex and DRG samples were taken. Lipid peroxidation (LP), cell viability and cytosolic Ca(2+) values in DRG neurons were higher in group B than in groups A1 and A2 although their concentrations were increased by melatonin, 2-aminoethyldiphenyl borinate (2-APB), diltiazem and verapamil supplementation. Spike numbers of EEG records in group C were lower than in group B. Brain cortex vitamin E concentration was higher in group C than in group B. In conclusion, Melatonin supplementation in DRG neurons and brain seems to have protective effects on the 2.45 GHz-induced increase Ca(2+) influx, EEG records and cell viability of the hormone through TRPM2 and voltage gated Ca(2+) channels.

Abstract
We aimed to investigate effects of vitamins C and E (VCE) supplementation with exercise (EX) on antioxidant vitamin and lipid peroxidation (LP) levels in blood of patients with fibromyalgia (FM). A controlled study was performed on blood samples from 32 female FM patients and 30 age-matched controls. The patients were divided into three groups namely EX (n = 10), VCE (n = 11), and EX plus VCE (n = 11) after taking basal blood samples. After 12 weeks of EX and VCE supplementation, blood samples were taken once more from the patients. LP levels in plasma and erythrocytes were higher in the patients at baseline than those in controls, whereas LP levels were lower in the VCE and EX groups at the end of 12 weeks than those at baseline. Plasma concentrations of vitamins A and E and reduced glutathione were lower in the patients than those in controls and their concentrations were increased by VCE and EX. Glutathione peroxidase activity in erythrocytes was increased by VCE supplementation, with or without EX. Concentrations of β-carotene in the groups did not change with treatment. Despite the measured effects on anti-oxidative mechanisms, FM symptoms were not improved by the treatments. In conclusion, VCE with EX may protect against FM-induced oxidative stress by up-regulation of an antioxidant redox system in the plasma and erythrocytes of patients with FM. Such protective effects of VCE in the patients seemed to be greater in combination with EX than EX alone.
