Abstract
The widely used anti-cancer drug cisplatin imparts various toxic manifestations in the host, with nephrotoxicity being the most severe one. The trace element selenium shows antioxidant activity in both human and animals. The present study was designed to assess the chemoprotecting and chemoenhancing efficacy of a naphthalimide based organoselenium compound 2-(5-selenocyanato-pentyl)-benzo[de]isoquinoline 1,3-dione during cisplatin chemotherapy in mice bearing Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cells. Cisplatin (5 mg/kg b.w.) was administered intraperitoneally and the organoselenium compound (3 mg/kg b.w.) was given by oral gavage in concomitant and pretreatment schedule. The effects of the test compound was evaluated by assaying biochemical, hematological, histological, genotoxicity parameters and by investigating induction of apoptosis in tumor cells, and calculating tumor growth response in the host. The organoselenium compound significantly prevented cisplatin induced generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species, and onset of lipid peroxidation in the kidney tissue of the experimental mice. In addition, the test compound was also substantially restored cisplatin induced depleted activities of the renal antioxidant enzymes and reduced glutathione level; prevented the serum blood urea nitrogen level, creatinine level, chromosomal aberration, DNA damage, histological alterations of kidney, and normalized the hematological profile of the tumor bearing mice. Furthermore, the organoselenium compound alone or during combination therapy induced apoptosis in tumor cells through mitochondria mediated and DNA damage mediated pathway and ultimately increased the life span of the tumor bearing host. Hence, the results showed that the test compound not only reduced the toxicity of cisplatin but also enhanced its anti-tumor efficacy.

Abstract
Jute (Corchorus spp.), as a natural fibre-producing species, ranks next only to cotton. Inadequate understanding of its genetic architecture is a major lacuna for genetic improvement of this crop in terms of yield and quality. Establishment of a physical map provides a genomic tool that helps in positional cloning of valuable genes. In this report, an attempt was initiated to study association and localisation of single copy expressed sequence tag (EST) loci in the genome of Corchorus olitorius. The chromosome-specific association of EST was determined based on the appearance of an extra signal for a single copy cDNA probe in mitotic interphase nuclei of specific trisomic(s) for fluorescence in situ hybridisation, and validated using a cDNA fragment of the 26S rRNA gene (600 bp) as molecular probe. The probe exhibited three signals in meiotic interphase nuclei of trisomic 5, instead of two as observed in diploids and other trisomics, indicating its association with chromosome 5. Subsequent hybridisation of the same probe on the pachytene chromosomes of diploids confirmed that 26S rRNA occupies the terminal end of the short arm of chromosome 5 in C. olitorius. Subsequently, chromosome-specific association of 63 single copy EST and their physical localisation were determined on chromosomes 2, 4, 5 and 7. The study describes chromosome-specific physical localisation of genes in jute. The approach used here could be a step towards construction of genome-wide physical maps for any recalcitrant plant species like jute.

Abstract
During a survey in the year 2010, a novel phlebovirus was isolated from the Rousettus leschenaultii species of bats in western India. The virus was identified by electron microscopy from infected Vero E6 cells. Phylogenic analysis of the complete genome showed its close relation to severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) and Heartland viruses, which makes it imperative to further study its natural ecology and potential as a novel emerging zoonotic virus.

Abstract
Carbohydrate metabolism in humans is regulated by insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells and glucose disposal by insulin-sensitive tissues. Insulin facilitates glucose utilization in peripheral tissues and suppresses hepatic glucose production. Any defects in insulin action predispose an individual to glucose intolerance and Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Early detection of defects in insulin action could provide opportunities to prevent or delay progression of the disease state. There are different approaches to assess insulin action. Initial methods, such as peripheral insulin concentration and simple indices, have several limitations. Subsequently, researchers developed methodologies using intravenous glucose infusion to determine glucose fluxes. However, these methodologies are limited by being non-physiological. Newer, innovative techniques that have been developed are more sophisticated and physiological. By modelling glucose kinetics using isotope dilution techniques, several robust parameters can be obtained that are physiologically relevant and sound. This brief review summarizes most of the non-physiological and physiological methodologies used to measure the variables of insulin action.

Hexavalent chromium is a widespread environmental contaminant and a known human carcinogen. Kinetics of reduction of hexavalent chromium by bio-molecule glycerol in micellar media have been studied spectrophotometrically. The cytoplasmic reduction of hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium occurs in micro-heterogeneous systems. In vitro, the micelles are considered to mimic the cellular membranes. The electron transfer processes occurring in the micellar systems is considered as model to obtain insight into the electron transport process prevailing in biological systems. Micellar media is also a probe to establish the mechanistic paths of reduction of hexavalent chromium to trivalent chromium. Effects of electrolytes common to biological system are studied to establish the proposed reaction mechanism strongly.

Abstract
Background: Fallopian tubes are common surgical specimen in the pathology laboratory; still there is a lack of data to describe the frequency of various histological fi ndings. The aim and objectives of this study was to describe the various histopathological fi ndings of fallopian tubes. Materials and Methods: Two thousand fi ve hundred and seventy fi ve cases where fallopian tubes were removed either separately or along with other female genital tract organs were studied retrospectively and their histopathological fi ndings documented. Results: Ectopic pregnancy comprised maximum number of cases closely followed by salpingitis. Primary neoplastic lesions were rare as compared to secondary malignancies. Serial sections of fallopian tube and sections from representative areas are essential for a pathologist so that the diagnosis of these pathological entities is not missed. Conclusion: Though the fallopian tubes remain unremarkable in majority of the surgical pathological specimens, it must be subjected for histopathological examination to demonstrate the pathological lesions. Abstract
Alemtuzumab has been employed for induction therapy in kidney transplantation with low rates of acute rejection and excellent graft and patient survival. Antibody induction therapy has been linked to increased vulnerability to cancer. Data regarding malignancy rates with alemtuzumab are limited. We studied 1350 kidney transplant recipients (between 2001 and 2009) at the University of Pittsburgh Starzl Transplant Institute, for post-transplant de novo and recurrent malignancy, excluding non-melanoma skin cancer, among patients receiving alemtuzumab, thymoglobulin, and no induction therapies. Of the 1350 patients, 1002 (74.2%) received alemtuzumab, 205 (15.2%) received thymoglobulin, and 122 (9%) received no induction therapy. After excluding cancers occurring within 60 d post-transplantation, 43 (3.25%) malignancies were observed during a median follow-up time of 4.0 yr. The incidence of malignancy was 5.4% (1.09 per 100 patient-years [PY]) with thymoglobulin, 2.8% (0.74 per 100 PY) with alemtuzumab, and 3.3% (0.66 per 100 PY) with no induction (across all groups; p = 0.2342, thymoglobulin vs. alemtuzumab; p = 0.008). Thus, with the exception of non-melanoma skin cancer which we did not evaluate, alemtuzumab induction was not associated with increased cancer incidence post-kidney transplantation when compared to no induction therapy and was associated with lower cancer incidence when compared to thymoglobulin.

Abstract
To study the effects of gentamicin in combination with ascorbic acid on septic arthritis, mice were infected with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and treated with gentamicin, which was given at 5 mg/kg after 24 h of infection, followed by ascorbic acid, given at 20 mg/kg body weight after 2 h of gentamicin treatment. Mice were sacrificed at 3, 9, 15 days post-infection (dpi). Combined treatment of infected mice with gentamicin and ascorbic acid eradicated the bacteria from the blood, spleen and synovial tissue and showed a significant gross reduction in arthritis, reduced serum levels of tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interferon gamma (IFN-γ). S. aureus-infected mice have demonstrated the disturbed antioxidant status measured in terms of cellular antioxidants like reduced glutathione and antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. The same were ameliorated when the animals were co-treated with gentamicin along with ascorbic acid.

Abstract
We present a single-chip array of 100 biologically-based electronic neuron models interconnected to each other and the outside environment through 30,000 synapses. The chip was fabricated in a standard 350 nm CMOS IC process. Our approach used dense circuit models of synaptic behavior, including biological computation and learning, as well as transistor channel models. We use Address-Event Representation (AER) spike communication for inputs and outputs to this IC. We present the IC architecture and infrastructure, including IC chip, configuration tools, and testing platform. We present measurement of small network of neurons, measurement of STDP neuron dynamics, and measurement from a compiled spiking neuron WTA topology, all compiled into this IC.

Abstract
We construct a coarse-grained effective two-dimensional (2d hydrodynamic theory as a theoretical model for a coupled system of a fluid membrane and a thin layer of a polar active fluid in its ordered state that is anchored to the membrane. We show that such a system is prone to generic instabilities through the interplay of nonequilibrium drive, polar order and membrane fluctuation. We use our model equations to calculate diffusion coefficients of an inclusion in the membrane and show that their values depend strongly on the system size, in contrast to their equilibrium values. Our work extends the work of S. Sankararaman and S. Ramaswamy (Phys. Rev. Lett., 102, 118107 (2009)) to a coupled system of a fluid membrane and an ordered active fluid layer. Our model is broadly inspired by and should be useful as a starting point for theoretical descriptions of the coupled dynamics of a cell membrane and a cortical actin layer anchored to it.

Abstract
Bloodstream infections with Salmonella typhi, is uncommon in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected persons. The symptoms in such patients are often non-specific and have a rather insidious onset and progression. We report a patient with sepsis and lower limb gangrene due to Salmonella typhi infection in an HIV-infected patient.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Increased advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) and their soluble receptors (sRAGE) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia (PE). However, this association has not been elucidated in pregnancies complicated by diabetes. We aimed to investigate the serum levels of these factors in pregnant women with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), a condition associated with a four-fold increase in PE. DESIGN Prospective study in women with T1DM at 12.2 ± 1.9, 21.6 ± 1.5 and 31.5 ± 1.7 weeks of gestation [mean ± standard deviation (SD); no overlap] before PE onset. SETTING Antenatal clinics. POPULATION Pregnant women with T1DM (n = 118; 26 developed PE) and healthy nondiabetic pregnant controls (n = 21). METHODS Maternal serum levels of sRAGE (total circulating pool), N(ε)-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML), hydroimidazolone (methylglyoxal-modified proteins) and total AGEs were measured by immunoassays. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Serum sRAGE and AGEs in pregnant women with T1DM who subsequently developed PE (DM PE+) versus those who remained normotensive (DM PE-). RESULTS In DM PE+ versus DM PE-, sRAGE was significantly lower in the first and second trimesters, prior to the clinical manifestation of PE (P < 0.05). Further, reflecting the net sRAGE scavenger capacity, sRAGE:hydroimidazolone was significantly lower in the second trimester (P < 0.05) and sRAGE:AGE and sRAGE:CML tended to be lower in the first trimester (P < 0.1) in women with T1DM who subsequently developed PE versus those who did not. These conclusions persisted after adjusting for prandial status, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), duration of diabetes, parity and mean arterial pressure as covariates. CONCLUSIONS In the early stages of pregnancy, lower circulating sRAGE levels, and the ratio of sRAGE to AGEs, may be associated with the subsequent development of PE in women with T1DM.

Abstract
New-onset diabetes after transplantation is recognized as one of the metabolic consequences which may increase the risk of morbidity and mortality after solid organ transplantation. The pathophysiology of new-onset diabetes after transplantation has not been clearly defined and may resemble that of Type 2 diabetes, characterized by predominantly insulin resistance or defective insulin secretion, or both. This review aims to summarize the current state of knowledge regarding the prevalence, consequences, pathogenesis, and management of new-onset diabetes after transplantation, with a major focus on the possible mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of the disorder. The aetiology of new-onset diabetes after transplantation is multifactorial, with diabetogenic immunosuppressive drugs playing a major role. Multiple cellular and physiologic mechanisms are involved in the process. Selection of an appropriate maintenance immunosuppressive regimen should involve balancing the risk of patient and graft survival vs. the potential for new-onset diabetes after transplantation.

Abstract
Surveillance work was initiated to study the presence of highly infectious diseases like Ebola-Reston, Marburg, Nipah and other possible viruses that are known to be found in the bat species and responsible for causing diseases in humans. A novel adenovirus was isolated from a common species of fruit bat (Rousettus leschenaultii) captured in Maharashtra State, India. Partial sequence analysis of the DNA polymerase gene shows this isolate to be a newly recognized member of the genus Mastadenovirus (family Adenoviridae), approximately 20% divergent at the nucleotide level from Japanese BatAdV, its closest known relative.

Abstract
The deregulated presence or absence of microRNAs (miRNAs) might play an important role in molecular pathways leading to neoplastic transformation. At present, it is also thought that the approaches to interfere miRNA functions should be helpful for developing novel therapeutic opportunities for human cancer. In this study, we provide evidence that the anticancer agent benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) has the ability to modulate the level of miRNAs such as miR-221 and miR-375, known to be abnormally expressed in pancreatic cancer patients. Interestingly, ectopic expression of miR-375 or the enforced silencing of miR-221 in cultured pancreatic cancer cells attenuates cell viability and sensitizes antiproliferative action of BITC. We also show that the expression of putative tumor suppressor miR-375 is more abundant in nonpathological mice pancreata than those with Kras(G12D)-driven pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PanIN). To the contrary, the expression of oncogenic miR-221 is significantly elevated in the mouse pancreas with PanIN lesions. Although miR-375 has been shown to be aberrantly expressed in pancreatic cancer patients, there has not been a comprehensive study to investigate the molecular pathways targeted by this miRNA in pancreatic cancer cells. Further analysis by gene expression microarray revealed that IGFBP5 and CAV-1, potential biomarkers of pancreatic cancer, were significantly downregulated in cells transfected with miR-375. Correlatively, elevated expression of IGFBP5 and CAV-1 was evident in the mouse pancreas with preneoplastic lesions in which the expression of miR-375 wanes. Taken together, our findings suggest that anticancer agent BITC might target the expression of miR-221 and miR-375 to switch hyperproliferative pancreatic cancer cells to a hypoproliferative state.

Abstract
Abstract
Large high-throughput studies in patients with pancreatic cancer revealed that oncogenic miR-221 is commonly upregulated microRNA whereas putative tumor suppressor miR-375 is generally down modulated when compared to adjacent benign pancreatic tissue or normal pancreas. In our laboratory, we observed that deregulated expression of miR-375 and miR-221 (as noted in pancreatic cancer patients) can be recapitulated in PDX1-Cre+; KRasG12D+ pancreatic cancer mouse model. Coherent data obtained from pancreatic cancer patient samples to preneoplastic lesions developed in preclinical mouse model tempted us to postulate that aberrant expression of these miRNAs (−375 and-221) might play significant role for the development of pancreatic cancer. Interestingly, ablation of miR-221 by ectopic expression of antagomir-221 in pancreatic ductal carcinoma cells can significantly exert antiproliferative effect with increased expression of p27kip1, a target of miR-221. To the other end, premiR-375 overexpression diminished cell proliferation with downmodulation of Insulin like growth factor binding protein 5 (IGFBP5) and Caveolin-1 (CAV-1 gene), which are of particular interest because of their potential link with pancreatic cancer cell growth and diagnosis. It is quite intriguing that the levels of both CAV-1 and IGFBP5 expression were elevated when miR-375 expression wanes in KRASG12D driven PanIN lesion in compound mutant mice.
Previous studies in our laboratory demonstrate that benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC), a prototypical member of the isothiocyanate (ITC) family, inhibits proliferation of human pancreatic cancer cells by causing cell cycle arrest and inducing apoptosis. Interestingly, real time qRT-PCR analysis indicates that anticancer agent BITC can diminish oncogenic miR-221 expression and elevate the level of tumor suppressor miR-375 in pancreatic cancer cells. Besides, genetic manipulation studies revealed that enforced silencing of miR-221 or overexpression of miR-375 enhances the antiproliferative effect of BITC in pancreatic ductal carcinoma cells. Next we explored the efficacy of BITC to interfere with the development of mouse PanIN lesions. Results indicate that pancreata of BITC administered compound mutant mice exhibit reduced level of IGFBP5 protein. Histopathological analysis of the extent of PanINs as well as studies on the magnitude of expression of miR-221/miR-375 and other molecular mediators in these pancreata are in progress. Explicitly, our investigation might provide new insight into nonconventional microRNA replacement therapy against pancreatic cancer.

Abstract
Motivated by the unique physical properties of biological active matter, e.g., cytoskeletal dynamics in eukaryotic cells, we set up effective two-dimensional (2d) coarse-grained hydrodynamic equations for the dynamics of thin active gels with polar or nematic symmetries. We use the well-known three-dimensional (3d) descriptions (K. Kruse et al., Eur. Phys. J. E 16, 5 (2005); A. Basu et al., Eur. Phys. J. E 27, 149 (2008)) for thin active-gel samples confined between parallel plates with appropriate boundary conditions to derive the effective 2d constitutive relations between appropriate thermodynamic fluxes and generalised forces for small deviations from equilibrium. We consider three distinct cases, characterised by spatial symmetries and boundary conditions, and show how such considerations dictate the structure of the constitutive relations. We use these to study the linear instabilities, calculate the correlation functions and the diffusion constant of a small tagged particle, and elucidate their dependences on the activity or nonequilibrium drive.

Abstract
The disorder of microRNAs (miRNAs) often referred as 'micromanagers of gene expression' has been implicated with a vast array of neoplasmthe discovery establishes an important connection with the etiology, diagnosis and potential therapy of human cancer. Indeed, the wide range of profiling studies enabled to create miRNA signatures of solid tumors as well as cancers of blood origin. MiRNAs have been observed to play a significant role in the regulation of gene expression-a critical aspect of many biological processes, including cell development, differentiation, apoptosis and proliferation. The differential expression levels of miRNAs in tumors and their normal counterpart have enabled scientists to designate their roles as oncomir or tumor suppressor. Interestingly, the diminishment of oncogenic or enhanced levels of tumor suppressor miRNAs (antagomirs) have been reported to modulate the sensitivity of cancer cells to anticancer agents. To the other end, carcinogenic chemicals either possess the ability of silencing beneficial tumor suppressive miRNAs or maintain the augmented levels of their oncogenic counterpart. In this article we provide a comprehensive overview on the modulation of these "micromanaging oligos" by cancer causing as well as cancer preventing agents.

Abstract
Transplant glomerulitis is an increasingly recognized lesion in renal transplant biopsies. To develop a refined grading system, we defined glomerulitis by the presence of ≥5 leukocytes/glomerulus and evaluated 111 biopsies using three different grading systems: (i) percentage of glomerular involvement, (ii) peak inflammation in the most severely affected glomerulus and (iii) presence/absence of endocapillary occlusion by inflammatory cells. Endocapillary occlusion had no impact on graft survival, but was associated with increased serum creatinine, proteinuria and subsequent transplant glomerulopathy. Grading based on either percent or peak glomerular involvement correlated with graft failure and peritubular capillaritis. However, the percent glomerular involvement method had the additional advantage of displaying associations with: concurrent proteinuria, focal or diffuse immunoperoxidase peritubular capillary C4d staining, 1-year postbiopsy serum creatinine, subsequent detection of donor-specific antibody and development of transplant glomerulopathy. Patients with >75% glomerular involvement also revealed persistent high-grade glomerulitis on follow-up biopsies despite antirejection treatment. In conclusion, grading of glomerulitis is a meaningful exercise, and a quantification system based on percentage of glomerular involvement shows the most robust associations with clinical parameters and prognosis.

Abstract
The rheology near jamming of a suspension of soft colloidal spheres is studied using a custom microfluidic rheometer that provides the stress versus strain rate over many decades. We find non-Newtonian behavior below the jamming concentration and yield-stress behavior above it. The data may be collapsed onto two branches with critical scaling exponents that agree with expectations based on Hertzian contacts and viscous drag. These results support the conclusion that jamming is similar to a critical phase transition, but with interaction-dependent exponents.

Abstract
A neuromorphic analog chip is presented that is capable of implementing massively parallel neural computations while retaining the programmability of digital systems. We show measurements from neurons with Hopf bifurcations and integrate and fire neurons, excitatory and inhibitory synapses, passive dendrite cables, coupled spiking neurons, and central pattern generators implemented on the chip. This chip provides a platform for not only simulating detailed neuron dynamics but also uses the same to interface with actual cells in applications such as a dynamic clamp. There are 28 computational analog blocks (CAB), each consisting of ion channels with tunable parameters, synapses, winner-take-all elements, current sources, transconductance amplifiers, and capacitors. There are four other CABs which have programmable bias generators. The programmability is achieved using floating gate transistors with on-chip programming control. The switch matrix for interconnecting the components in CABs also consists of floating-gate transistors. Emphasis is placed on replicating the detailed dynamics of computational neural models. Massive computational area efficiency is obtained by using the reconfigurable interconnect as synaptic weights, resulting in more than 50 000 possible 9-b accurate synapses in 9 mm(2).

Abstract
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) comprising 19-25 nucleotides are highly conserved small non-coding RNAs which regulate normal gene expression during development, cell proliferation and apoptosis by targeting mRNAs of protein-coding genes at the post-transcriptional level. Prevalent studies suggest that some human miRNAs, such as miRNA-16, are deregulated in human cancer and behave as tumor suppressors. The overall objective of our investigation was to assess whether miRNA-16 (miR-16) is involved in the regulation of critical genes, such as BCL2, that control the sensitivity of pancreatic cancer cells to apoptosis. This study showed that the ectopic overexpression of miR-16 may be therapeutically beneficial as is evidenced by impaired cell survival with concomitant attenuation of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2. Moreover, the luciferase reporter assay suggested that miR-16 post-transcriptionally regulates Bcl-2 expression in pancreatic cancer cells through the target sites of the 3' untranslated region of this gene.

Abstract
In summary, 1.7 years after transplantation, bortezomib rescue has been durably effective in salvaging our patient with refractory antibody mediated rejection. The only price has been persistently high levels of BK viruria. The presence of ongoing and even recurrent donor specific antibody has made it difficult to reduce immunosuppression further, and the concern that the high levels of BK viruria will eventually progress to viremia and nephropathy necessitates continued therapy with very low dose cidofovir and leflunomide. The absence of C1q binding DSA with stable renal function may provide some reserved optimism that the DSA that is detectable by convention Luminex assay may have reduced pathological implications. However, more data and prolonged follow-up are needed to determine whether or not non-complement binding DSA has an adverse pathological role.

Abstract
Benzyl isothiocyanate can exert anti-tumor effect by arrest of cell cycle progression and induction of apoptosis in human pancreatic cancer cells. Among them, the dissection of the molecular mechanism of induction of apoptosis is important because the knowledge may be exploited for both cancer prevention and treatment. Our studies reported here indicate that BITC-mediated apoptosis involves the disappearance of intact 21-kDa Bid protein, cytochrome c release and predominant procaspase-3 cleavage. Using adenocarcinoma and metastatic pancreatic cancer cells, we investigated whether this dietary isothiocyanate induces apoptosis by converging two major pathways: the death receptor-mediated extrinsic and the mitochondrial intrinsic pathway. Indeed, cell surface receptor analysis by flow cytometry demonstrates the up-regulation of DR4, a member of death receptor family in BITC exposed pancreatic cancer cells. Since BITC is able to trigger death receptor signaling, we were interested in examining the effects of BITC and death receptor ligand TRAIL together on pancreatic cancer cell death. Interestingly, BITC augments TRAIL-induced apoptosis in both metastatic and adenocarcinoma cells. Moreover, we report for the first time that the sensitivity of metastatic pancreatic cancer cells to this isothiocyanate might be due to down-modulation of the proangiogenic molecule small GTPase Rac1 and caspase-3 substrate RasGAP, a regulator of Rho GTPase family.

Abstract
Chordomas are most commonly of extradural origin and are associated with bone destruction. Extra-osseous intradural chordomas are extremely rare and most of the cases described are located near the clivus. We report an extremely rare case of multiple extra-osseous intraspinal chordomas in a 36-year-old male patient with autopsy findings. This case highlights that behaviour of spinal intradural chordomas is not universally low grade, but is variable and aggressive.

Abstract
The incidence of ectopic pregnancies is increasing. Common risk factors are tubal pathology, previous tubal surgery, previous ectopic pregnancy, intrauterine device use and embryo transfer. Levonelle-2, a progesterone-only postcoital contraceptive works by a combination of mechanisms including ovulation inhibition, prevention of fertilization, and inhibition of implantation. It is 85% effective and there have been 12 reported cases of ectopic pregnancy in the UK with its use. It is believed that progesterone slows the intratubal migration of the fertilized ovum. In the case reported here, a woman presented with an ectopic pregnancy after use of Levonelle-2 as postcoital contraception; there were no clinical predisposing risk factors. In the absence of any histological evidence of tubal damage, we suspect that the levonorgestrel from Levonelle-2 could have been responsible for delayed embryo transfer which resulted in the ectopic pregnancy.
