Extraordinary N atom tunneling in formation of InN shell layer on GaN nanorod m-plane sidewall

We report the extraordinary tunneling process that finds the lower cohesive energy route for stablizing InN shell layer on m-plane sidewall of GaN nanorod. The [0001] orientated GaN nanorod array is grown on sapphire substrate patterned with Ga nanoparticle by metal-organic vapor deposition method, based on which the simulation structures of c-plane top surface and m-plane sidewall surface is constructed for the first-principles calculations. The results show that the introduction of In wetting monolayer could effectively lower the cohesive energy of adalayers on non-polar GaN surfaces. Most importantly, it is revealed that there exists an extraordinary tunneling process in which the N atoms will drag out the In wetting atoms and tunnel through to form stable InN shell layer on the nanorod sidewall.

Phosphor-free, white-light LED under alternating-current operation

A light-emitting diode structure, consisting of a p-GaN layer, a CdZnO/ZnO quantum-well (QW) structure, a high-temperature-grown ZnO layer, and a GaZnO layer, is fabricated. Under forward bias, the device effectively emits green-yellow light, from the QW structure, at the rim of device mesa. Under reverse bias, electrons in the valence band of the p-GaN layer move into the conduction band of the GaZnO layer, through a QW-state-assisted tunneling process, to recombine with the injected holes in the GaZnO layer, for emitting yellow-red and shallow ultraviolet light over the entire mesa area. Also, carrier recombination in the p-GaN layer produces blue light. By properly designing the thickness of the high-temperature grown ZnO layer, the emission intensity under forward bias can be controlled such that, under alternating-current operation at 60 Hz, the spatial and spectral mixtures of the emitted lights of complementary colors, under forward and reverse biases, result in white light generation based on persistence of vision.

Search for a light sterile neutrino at Daya Bay

A search for light sterile neutrino mixing was performed with the first 217 days of data from the Daya Bay Reactor Antineutrino Experiment. The experiment's unique configuration of multiple baselines from six 2.9 GW(th) nuclear reactors to six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512 m and 561 m) and one far (1579 m) underground experimental halls makes it possible to test for oscillations to a fourth (sterile) neutrino in the 10(-3) eV(2)<|Δm(41)(2) |< 0.3 eV(2) range. The relative spectral distortion due to the disappearance of electron antineutrinos was found to be consistent with that of the three-flavor oscillation model. The derived limits on sin(2) 2θ(14) cover the 10(-3) eV(2) ≲ |Δm(41)(2)| ≲ 0.1 eV(2) region, which was largely unexplored.

Establishment of a novel, eco-friendly transgenic pig model using porcine pancreatic amylase promoter-driven fungal cellulase transgenes

Competition between humans and livestock for cereal and legume grains makes it challenging to provide economical feeds to livestock animals. Recent increases in corn and soybean prices have had a significant impact on the cost of feed for pig producers. The utilization of byproducts and alternative ingredients in pig diets has the potential to reduce feed costs. Moreover, unlike ruminants, pigs have limited ability to utilize diets with high fiber content because they lack endogenous enzymes capable of breaking down nonstarch polysaccharides into simple sugars. Here, we investigated the feasibility of a transgenic strategy in which expression of the fungal cellulase transgene was driven by the porcine pancreatic amylase promoter in pigs. A 2,488 bp 5'-flanking region of the porcine pancreatic amylase gene was cloned by the genomic walking technique, and its structural features were characterized. Using GFP as a reporter, we found that this region contained promoter activity and had the potential to control heterologous gene expression. Transgenic pigs were generated by pronuclear microinjection. Founders and offspring were identified by PCR and Southern blot analyses. Cellulase mRNA and protein showed tissue-specific expression in the pancreas of F1 generation pigs. Cellulolytic enzyme activity was also identified in the pancreas of transgenic pigs. These results demonstrated the establishment of a tissue-specific promoter of the porcine pancreatic amylase gene. Transgenic pigs expressing exogenous cellulase may represent a way to increase the intake of low-cost, fiber-rich feeds.

Dependencies of the emission behavior and quantum well structure of a regularly-patterned, InGaN/GaN quantum-well nanorod array on growth condition

To achieve green emission from the sidewall non-polar quantum wells (QWs) of a GaN nanorod (NR) light-emitting diode, regularly patterned InGaN/GaN QW NR arrays are grown under various growth conditions of indium supply rate, QW growth temperature, and QW growth time for comparing their emission wavelength variations of the top-face c-plane and sidewall m-plane QWs based on photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence (CL) measurements. Although the variation trends of QW emission wavelength by changing those growth conditions in the NR structure are similar to those in the planar structure, the emission wavelength range of the QWs on an NR is significantly shorter than that in a planar structure under the same growth conditions. Under the growth conditions for a longer NR QW emission wavelength, the difference of emission wavelength between the top-face and sidewall QWs is smaller. Also, the variation range of the emission wavelength from the sidewall QWs over different heights on the sidewall becomes larger. On the other hand, strain state analysis based on transmission electron microscopy is undertaken to calibrate the average QW widths and average indium contents in the two groups of QW of an NR. The variation trends of the calibrated QW widths and indium contents are consistent with those of the CL emission wavelengths from various portions of NR QWs.

Geographic variation in parasitism rates of two sympatric cuckoo hosts in China

Rates of brood parasitism vary extensively among host species and populations of a single host species. In this study, we documented and compared parasitism rates of two sympatric hosts, the Oriental Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus orientalis) and the Reed Parrotbill (Paradoxornis heudei), in three populations in China. We found that the Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) is the only parasite using both the Oriental Reed Warbler and Reed Parrotbill as hosts, with a parasitism rate of 22.4%-34.3% and 0%-4.6%, respectively. The multiple parasitism rates were positively correlated with local parasitism rates across three geographic populations of Oriental Reed Warbler, which implies that higher pressure of parasitism lead to higher multiple parasitism rate. Furthermore, only one phenotype of cuckoo eggs was found in the nests of these two host species. Our results lead to two conclusions: (1) The Oriental Reed Warbler should be considered the major host of Common Cuckoo in our study sites; and (2) obligate parasitism on Oriental Reed Warbler by Common Cuckoo is specialized but flexible to some extent, i.e., using Reed Parrotbill as a secondary host. Further studies focusing on egg recognition and rejection behaviour of these two host species should be conducted to test our predictions.

Photothermal optical coherence tomography based on the localized surface plasmon resonance of Au nanoring

The conventional optical coherence tomography (OCT) images based on enhanced scattering and the photothermal (PT) images based on enhanced absorption of the localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance of Au nanorings (NRIs) in a bio-tissue sample are demonstrated with the scans of an OCT system (1310-nm system), in which the spectral range covers the LSP resonance peak wavelength, and another OCT system (1060-nm system), in which the spectral range is away from the LSP resonance peak wavelength. A PT image is formed by evaluating the modulation frequency (400 Hz) response of an excitation laser with its wavelength (1308 nm) close to the LSP resonance peak at 1305 nm of the Au NRI solution. With the scan of the 1310-nm OCT system, the Au NRI distribution in the bio-tissue sample can be observed in both conventional OCT and PT images. However, with the scan of the 1060-nm OCT system, the Au NRI distribution can be clearly observed only in the PT image. The diffusion process of Au NRIs in the bio-tissue sample can be traced with the scan of either OCT system. Based on phantom experiments, it is shown that the PT image can help in resolving the ambiguity of a conventional OCT image between the enhanced scattering of Au NRIs and the strong scattering of a tissue structure in the 1310-nm OCT scanning. Also, under the condition of weak intrinsic sample scattering, particularly in the scan of the 1060-nm system, the PT signal can be lower than a saturating level, which is determined by the excitation power. By increasing OCT system signal-to-noise ratio or M-mode scan time, the PT signal level can be enhanced.

Efficiency improvement of a vertical light-emitting diode through surface plasmon coupling and grating scattering

The enhancement of output intensity, the generation of polarized output, and the reduction of the efficiency droop effect in a surface plasmon (SP) coupled vertical light-emitting diode (LED) with an Ag nano-grating structure located between the p-GaN layer and the wafer bonding metal for inducing SP coupling with the InGaN/GaN quantum wells (QWs) are demonstrated. In fabricating the vertical LED, the patterned sapphire substrate is removed with a photoelectrochemical liftoff technique. Based on the reflection measurement from the metal grating structure and the numerical simulation result, it is found that the localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance induced around the metal grating crest plays the major role in the SP-QW coupling process although a hybrid mode of LSP and surface plasmon polariton can be generated in the coupling process. By adding a surface grating structure to the SP-coupled vertical LED on the n-GaN side, the output intensity is further enhanced, the output polarization ratio is further increased, and the efficiency droop effect is further suppressed.

Independent variations of applied voltage and injection current for controlling the quantum-confined Stark effect in an InGaN/GaN quantum-well light-emitting diode

A reverse-biased voltage is applied to either device in the vertical configuration of two light-emitting diodes (LEDs) grown on patterned and flat Si (110) substrates with weak and strong quantum-confined Stark effects (QCSEs), respectively, in the InGaN/GaN quantum wells for independently controlling the applied voltage across and the injection current into the p-i-n junction in the lateral configuration of LED operation. The results show that more carrier supply is needed in the LED of weaker QCSE to produce a carrier screening effect for balancing the potential tilt in increasing the forward-biased voltage, when compared with the LED of stronger QCSE. The small spectral shift range in increasing injection current in the LED of weaker QCSE is attributed not only to the weaker QCSE, but also to its smaller device resistance such that a given increment of applied voltage leads to a larger increment of injection current. From a viewpoint of practical application in LED operation, by applying a reverse-biased voltage in the vertical configuration, the applied voltage and injection current in the lateral configuration can be independently controlled by adjusting the vertical voltage for keeping the emission spectral peak fixed.

Enhancements of the emission and light extraction of a radiating dipole coupled with localized surface plasmon induced on a surface metal nanoparticle in a light-emitting device

The radiated power enhancement and more congregated radiation of a radiating dipole within a GaN material when it is coupled with the localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance modes induced on a surface Ag nanoparticle (NP) are numerically demonstrated. The numerical study is based on an algorithm including the induction of LSP resonance on the Ag NP by the source dipole and the feedback effect of the LSP resonance field on the source dipole behavior. The spectral peaks of radiated power enhancement correspond to the substrate LSP resonance modes with mode fields mainly distributed around the bottom of the Ag NP such that the coupling system radiates mainly into the GaN half-space. By moving the radiating dipole laterally away from the bottom of the Ag NP, the spectral peaks of radiated power enhancement red shift and their levels diminish with increasing lateral distance. The radiation patterns in the GaN half-space show more congregated radiation around the vertical direction, indicating that the light extraction efficiency can be enhanced in an LSP-coupled light-emitting device with surface metal NPs.

[Using spectra and visual modeling to study animal coloration]

Animal coloration has many adaptive functions and plays an important role in signal communication both among intra- and interspecies. For example, it has been widely used in mate choice, intrasexual competition, and as aposematic or cryptic coloration in predator avoidance. Many colors and pigments also function in microbial resistance, structural support, photoprotection, and thermoregulation. Differing from human vision, based on RGB system, many other animals have tetrachromatic vision system, which includes the ultraviolet (UV) range that is undetectable by human eyes. Previous studies showed that ultraviolet is important in some species' social signaling and communication. Moreover, cone inner segments of most classes of vertebrate contain an oil droplet, which acts as a cut-off filter absorbing wavelengths below a critical value, and transmitting longer wavelengths. Animal and human vision is significantly different in that the classification of color by human standards may be a misleading for measuring animal coloration. Here, we illuminate how to use fiber spectrophotometer to quantify animal coloration, and analyze it by spectra analysis and visual modeling. As an example, we obtained plumage reflectance spectra from male and female scarlet minivets (Pericrocotus flammeus). This bird species is sexually dimorphic that the males have plumage color in black and red, while the females have grey and yellow accordingly. These plumage colors are typically generated from melanin and carotenoid pigments, which have an effect on antioxidant activity. Analysis of spectra segments provides hue, chroma, brightness and relative brightness of each wave range. Visual modeling maps color patches on tetrahedral color space and Robinson projection, meanwhile, calculates color span and color space volume which describe the color contrast and color diversity, respectively. In visual modeling, ambient light irradiance and spectral sensitivity of animal retinas are included, which provides an objective evaluation of coloration of animal vision.

[Spectra analysis reveals the sexual dichromatism of red-eared slider turtle(Trachemys scripta)]

In this study,spectra analysis was conducted to investigate the sexual dichromatism and relationship between body color and quality of the red-eared slider turtle (Trachemys scripta). Visual modeling revealed that the differences of the hues of body colors' ultraviolet (UV) components between male and female were significant. Moreover, the visible(VIS)components of the hues of forelimbs were correlated with body qualities of male but not of female. Our results indicated that UV might act as a signal for sexual cognition in red-eared slider turtles, and female might evaluate male by the VIS components of the hues of forelimbs. These findings provided preliminary results and perspectives to the sexual dichromatism and sexual selection behaviors of red-eared slider turtles.

Light-emitting device with regularly patterned growth of an InGaN/GaN quantum-well nanorod light-emitting diode array

A light-emitting device consisting of a two-dimensional regularly patterned InGaN/GaN quantum well (QW) nanorod (NR) light-emitting diode (LED) array is implemented and characterized. The NR p-i-n structure includes n-GaN NR core and essentially conformal p-GaN shell. The active regions include nonpolar sidewall QWs and polar top-face QWs. A conformal layer of transparent GaZnO of low resistivity is deposited onto the NR LED structure for spreading the injection current over the sidewalls. It is found that the blue-shift range of the output spectral peak in increasing injection current is smaller than that of a planar LED of about the same operation wavelength in a similar variation range of injection current density although it is nonzero. The small blue-shift range is attributed to the mixed emission contributions from the nonpolar sidewall QWs and polar top-face QWs.

Vertical light-emitting diodes with surface gratings and rough surfaces for effective light extraction

For enhancing the light extraction of a light-emitting diode, surface grating fabrication based on a simple method of combining photoelectrochemical (PEC) etching with phase mask interferometry has been demonstrated. To understand the optimum grating period in forming a surface grating on a vertical light-emitting diode (VLED), we construct a Llyod's interferometer within PEC electrolyte (KOH) to fabricate surface gratings of various periods on VLEDs for comparing their light extraction efficiencies. Also, to compare the effectiveness of light extraction enhancement between surface grating and rough surface, VLEDs with the rough surfaces fabricated with two different KOH wet etching methods are fabricated. The comparisons of VLED characterizations show that among those grating VLEDs, the light extraction is more effective in a VLED of a smaller grating period. Also, compared with VLEDs of rough surfaces, the grating VLEDs of short grating periods (<2 μm) have the higher light extraction efficiencies, even though the root-mean-square roughness of the rough surface is significantly larger than the grating groove depth.

Oral carcinoma with perineural invasion has higher nerve growth factor expression and worse prognosis

BACKGROUND

This study elucidated the association between histopathological factors and the prognosis of oral carcinoma. As the histopathological factors were determined from the surgical specimen and this can only be used for the choices of postoperative regimens, this study also investigated the linkage between prognostic factors and the expression of key molecules to examine the feasibility of markers as predictors.

METHODS

Clinicopathological factors of 101 oral carcinomas were cross-analyzed with disease-free survival. The expression of nerve growth factor (NGF) and its receptor, tyrosine kinase A receptor, was assayed with immunohistochemistry.

RESULTS

Nodal metastasis was the most crucial clinical predictor for disease-free survival. Perineural invasion (PNI) was an independent histopathological predictor for both nodal metastasis (P = 0.004) and disease-free survival (P = 0.019). Patients with advanced tumor and PNI exhibited the high hazard for tumor progression and poor disease-free survival. NGF immunoreactivity in tumors was correlated with PNI (P = 0.005) and neck lymph node metastasis (P = 0.036).

CONCLUSION

Perineural invasion is the indicator of worst prognosis. As NGF immunoreactivity was found to be associated with PNI and nodal metastasis, the NGF immunoreactivity of oral carcinoma revealed by diagnostic biopsy suggests that alternative therapeutic approaches might be appropriate.

On-substrate fabrication of a bio-conjugated Au nanoring solution for photothermal therapy application

The on-substrate fabrication of a bio-conjugated Au nanoring (NRI) solution with the localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance wavelength in the 1200-1300 nm range is demonstrated. Also, the effects of photothermal therapy through LSP resonance-induced absorption enhancement are illustrated by applying the bio-conjugated Au NRIs to human liver cancer cells and illuminating the cells with a laser of 1315 nm in wavelength. The Au NRI fabrication is based on the techniques of nano-imprint lithography and metal secondary sputtering. The procedure for on-substrate surface modification of Au NRIs leads to a high production yield of bio-conjugated NRIs. The threshold levels of the local laser intensity for injuring cancer cells based on the LSP resonances of Au NRIs of two different samples are determined.

Experimental study on low-detection limit for immunomagnetic reduction assays by manipulating reagent entities

The low limit of detection (LLD) plays an important role in biomolecular assays, especially for early-stage assays. Biomolecular detections usually involve the use of two main elements: a reagent and an analyzer, which both greatly contribute to the LLD. In this work, the relationships among the LLD and reagent-related factors are investigated. The to-be-detected biomolecule is c-reactive protein (CRP) as an example. The assay method is immunomagnetic reduction (IMR). The components of reagent are Fe(3)O(4) magnetic nanoparticles bio-functionalized with antibodies against CRP, dispersed in pH-7.4 phosphate buffered saline solution. Several key factors of the reagent, such as particle concentration, volume ratio of reagent to sample, and particle size, are manipulated to optimize the LLD of detecting CRP.

Designing a tunable 3D heterocellular breast cancer tissue test system

It is increasingly recognized that the tissue microenvironment is crucial in cell signaling and regulation of normal and malignant cell function. Components and properties of the microenvironment such as extracellular matrix, adhesion integrins, tissue architectures and tissue modulus regulate growth, differentiation and apoptosis of cells. These properties control cell fate through complex signals that are influenced either by interactions between neighbouring cells or by stimulated cell surface receptors. In this study, we established an in vitro engineered microenvironment: i.e., a tissue test system that combined heterocellular tumour spheroids, polymeric microcarriers and adipocytes, an abundant stromal cell type in breast tissue, to investigate the behaviour of breast cancer cells in response to different environmental stimuli in a more relevant 3D microenvironment. Results showed the engineered microenvironment influenced breast cancer cell proliferation, differentiation and migration through multi-cellular interactions and changes in microenvironmental stiffness and that stromal cells such as adipocytes play a critical role in the breast cancer process.

Long-term efficacy of miglustat in paediatric patients with Niemann-Pick disease type C

Niemann-Pick disease type C (NP-C) is a rare inherited neurovisceral disease characterized by progressive neurological manifestations. Oral miglustat was first approved for the treatment of children and adults with NP-C in Europe in 2009. There are still relatively few published data on the long-term efficacy and safety of miglustat in patients with NP-C in clinical practice. We report the effects of up to 6 years of treatment with miglustat 100 mg t.i.d. in five children. Overall, 3/5 patients displayed progressive dysphagia before starting miglustat, and 4/5 showed marked cognitive and/or motor impairment. The mean age at treatment start was 11.6 years, and the median (range) duration of therapy so far is 4 (4.1 to 6.1) years. No treatment dose alterations were required, but therapy was interrupted for 1-3 months at least once in all patients due to supply issues. Swallowing function was stabilised during miglustat therapy, with no significant increase in Han dysphagia scale or aspiration-penetration index scores among four evaluable patients (p > 0.05). Scores on the mini-mental state examination indicated an improvement in cognitive function during the first 3-6 months of miglustat therapy, followed by stabilisation up to 5 years. Ambulatory function remained stable for at least the first 2 years of treatment in most patients, but there was a trend towards deterioration thereafter, possibly related to treatment interruptions. The safety/tolerability profile of miglustat was similar to previous clinical studies, although reports of gastrointestinal disturbances were rare. Overall, miglustat appeared to stabilise key parameters of neurological disease progression.

Two-reference swept-source optical coherence tomography of high operation flexibility

The significantly less stringent operation of a two-reference swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) system for suppressing the mirror image is demonstrated based on the spatially localized image processing method. With this method, the phase difference between the two reference signals is not limited to 90 degrees. Based on the current experimental operation, the mirror image can be effectively suppressed as long as the phase difference is larger than 20 degrees. In other words, the adjustment of the beam splitter orientation for controlling the phase difference becomes much more flexible. Also, based on a phantom experiment, the combination the spatially localized mirror image suppression method with the two-reference OCT operation leads to the implementation of full-range optical Doppler tomography.

Comparison of emission characteristics between the CdZnO/ZnO quantum wells on ZnO and GaN templates

CdZnO/ZnO quantum well (QW) samples are grown on GaN and ZnO templates with plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy under different conditions of substrate temperature, Cd effusion cell temperature, and O(2) flow rate for emission characteristics comparison. It is found that the Cd incorporation on the ZnO template is generally lower, when compared with that on the GaN template, such that the O(2) flow rate needs to be reduced for stoichiometric CdZnO/ZnO QW growth on the ZnO template. Besides the wurtzite (wt) CdZnO structure, the rock-salt (rs) CdZnO structure exists in the CdZnO well layers when the total Cd content is high. The rs structure may dominate over the wt structure in photoluminescence intensity when the total Cd content is high. In either group of samples on the GaN and ZnO templates, the emission efficiency first increases and then decreases with increasing total Cd content. The low emission efficiency at low (high) Cd content is attributed to the weaker quantum confinement (the poorer crystal quality) of the QWs. The emission efficiencies of the QW samples on the GaN template are generally higher than those on the ZnO template. The carrier localization behavior in a CdZnO/ZnO QW, grown on either GaN or ZnO template, is significantly weaker than that in an InGaN/GaN QW. The strength of the quantum-confined Stark effect generally increases with increasing Cd content in either group of samples on the GaN and ZnO templates.

Intensity-modulated radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma: improvement of the therapeutic ratio with helical tomotherapy vs segmental multileaf collimator-based techniques

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the study was to compare differences in dosimetric, clinical and quality-of-life end points among patients treated with helical tomotherapy (HT) and segmental multileaf collimator (SMLC)-based intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

METHODS

From June 2005 to August 2009, 30 consecutive patients were treated with IMRT for nasopharyngeal carcinoma to a dose of 70 Gy. 14 patients (47%) were treated using HT and 16 (53%) were treated using SMLC-based IMRT. 28 patients (93%) received concurrent chemotherapy. The patients were evenly balanced between the two radiotherapy groups with respect to clinical and pathological characteristics. Median follow-up was 30 months (range, 6-62 months).

RESULTS

The 2-year estimates of overall survival, local-regional control and progression-free survival were 81%, 87% and 82%, respectively. There were no significant differences in any of these end points with respect to IMRT technique (p>0.05 for all). Dosimetric analysis revealed that patients treated by HT had significantly improved salivary sparing with respect to mean dose (27.3 vs 34.1 Gy, p=0.03) and volume receiving greater than or equal to 30 Gy (31.7% vs 47.3%, p=0.01) to the contralateral (spared) parotid gland. The incidence of Grade 3+ late xerostomia was 13 and 7% among patients treated with SMLC-based IMRT and HT, respectively (p=0.62). The corresponding proportion of patients who subjectively reported "too little" or "no" saliva at final follow-up was 38% and 7%, respectively (p=0.04).

CONCLUSION

The superior dosimetric outcome observed with HT appeared to translate into moderately improved clinical outcomes with respect to salivary sparing. Prospective trials are needed to validate this gain in the therapeutic ratio.

Geometry and composition comparisons between c-plane disc-like and m-plane core-shell InGaN/GaN quantum wells in a nitride nanorod

With the nano-imprint lithography and the pulsed growth mode of metalorganic chemical vapor deposition, a regularly-patterned, c-axis nitride nanorod (NR) array of quite uniform geometry with simultaneous depositions of top-face, c-plane disc-like and sidewall, m-plane core-shell InGaN/GaN quantum well (QW) structures is formed. The differences of geometry and composition between these two groups of QW are studied with scanning electron microscopy, cathodoluminescence, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In particular, the strain state analysis results in TEM observations provide us with the information about the QW width and composition. It is found that the QW widths are narrower and the indium contents are higher in the sidewall m-plane QWs, when compared with the top-face c-plane QWs. Also, in the sidewall m-plane QWs, the QW width (indium content) decreases (increases) with the height on the sidewall. The observed results can be interpreted with the migration behaviors of the constituent atoms along the NR sidewall from the bottom.

Randomized multicenter clinical trial of myofascial physical therapy in women with interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome and pelvic floor tenderness

PURPOSE

We determined the efficacy and safety of pelvic floor myofascial physical therapy compared to global therapeutic massage in women with newly symptomatic interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A randomized controlled trial of 10 scheduled treatments of myofascial physical therapy vs global therapeutic massage was performed at 11 clinical centers in North America. We recruited women with interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome with demonstrable pelvic floor tenderness on physical examination and a limitation of no more than 3 years' symptom duration. The primary outcome was the proportion of responders defined as moderately improved or markedly improved in overall symptoms compared to baseline on a 7-point global response assessment scale. Secondary outcomes included ratings for pain, urgency and frequency, the O'Leary-Sant IC Symptom and Problem Index, and reports of adverse events. We compared response rates between treatment arms using the exact conditional version of the Mantel-Haenszel test to control for clustering by clinical center. For secondary efficacy outcomes cross-sectional descriptive statistics and changes from baseline were calculated.

RESULTS

A total of 81 women randomized to the 2 treatment groups had similar symptoms at baseline. The global response assessment response rate was 26% in the global therapeutic massage group and 59% in the myofascial physical therapy group (p=0.0012). Pain, urgency and frequency ratings, and O'Leary-Sant IC Symptom and Problem Index decreased in both groups during followup, and were not significantly different between the groups. Pain was the most common adverse event, occurring at similar rates in both groups. No serious adverse events were reported.

CONCLUSIONS

A significantly higher proportion of women with interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome responded to treatment with myofascial physical therapy than to global therapeutic massage. Myofascial physical therapy may be a beneficial therapy in women with this syndrome.

Computation time-saving mirror image suppression method in Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography

The theory and experimental results of a computation time-saving mirror image suppression method in Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography, which utilizes the property of reversed system phase shift between the real and mirror images, for differentiating one from the other are demonstrated. By solving a set of two equations based on a reasonable approximation, the real image signal can be obtained. The theoretical backgrounds and the improved real image quality of the average and iteration procedures in this method are particularly illustrated. Also, the mirror image suppression ratios under various process conditions, including different process iteration numbers and different system phase shifts between two neighboring A-mode scans, are evaluated. Meanwhile, the mirror image suppression results based on our method are compared with those obtained from the widely used BM-scan technique. It is found that when a process procedure of two iterations is used, the mirror image suppression quality based on our method can be higher than that obtained from the BM-scan technique. The computation time of our method is significantly shorter than that of the BM-scan technique.

Surface plasmon effects in the absorption enhancements of amorphous silicon solar cells with periodical metal nanowall and nanopillar structures

The authors numerically investigate the absorption enhancement of an amorphous Si solar cell, in which a periodical one-dimensional nanowall or two-dimensional nanopillar structure of the Ag back-reflector is fabricated such that a dome-shaped grating geometry is formed after Si deposition and indium-tin-oxide coating. In this investigation, the effects of surface plasmon (SP) interaction in such a metal nanostructure are of major concern. Absorption enhancement in most of the solar spectral range of significant amorphous Si absorption (320-800 nm) is observed in a grating solar cell. In the short-wavelength range of high amorphous Si absorption, the weakly wavelength-dependent absorption enhancement is mainly caused by the broadband anti-reflection effect, which is produced through the surface nano-grating structures. In the long-wavelength range of diminishing amorphous Si absorption, the highly wavelength-sensitive absorption enhancement is mainly caused by Fabry-Perot resonance and SP interaction. The SP interaction includes the contributions of surface plasmon polariton and localized surface plasmon.

Fabrication of surface metal nanoparticles and their induced surface plasmon coupling with subsurface InGaN/GaN quantum wells

Based on the fabrication of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) with controlled geometry and surface density on an InGaN/GaN quantum well (QW) epitaxial structure, which contains indium-rich nano-clusters for producing localized states and free-carrier (delocalized) states in the QWs, and the characterization of their localized surface plasmon (LSP) coupling behavior with the carriers in the QWs, the interplay behavior of LSP coupling with carrier delocalization in the QWs is demonstrated. By using the polystyrene nanosphere lithography technique with an appropriate nanosphere size and adjusting the post-fabrication thermal annealing condition, the induced LSP resonance wavelength of the fabricated Ag NPs on the QW sample can match the QW emission wavelength for generating the coherent coupling between the carriers in the QWs and the induced LSP. The coupling leads to the enhancement of radiative recombination rate in the QWs and results in increased photoluminescence (PL) intensity, red-shifted PL spectrum, reduced PL decay time, and enhanced internal quantum efficiency. It is found that the observed effects are mainly due to the LSP coupling with the delocalized carriers in the QWs.

Observations of cardiac beating behaviors of wild-type and mutant Drosophilae with optical coherence tomography

Time-resolved optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanning images of wild-type and mutant fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster), illustrating the heartbeat patterns for evaluating their cardiac functions, are demonstrated. Based on the heartbeat patterns, the beat rate and the relative phase between the first two heart segments can be evaluated. The OCT scanning results of mutant flies with impaired proteasome function in cardiac muscles show irregular heartbeat patterns and systematically decreased average beat rates, when compared with the regular patterns of ~4.97 beats/s in average beat rate of the wild-type. In both wild-type and proteasome mutant flies, the beatings at different locations in the same heart segment are essentially synchronized. However, between different heart segments, although the beating in the second segment shows a lag in phase behind that of the first segment in a wild-type, in a proteasome mutant, the beating in the second segment becomes significantly leading that of the first segment. Besides the comparison between the wild-type and proteasomal mutant flies, the influences of using different methods for immobilizing flies during OCT scanning on the heart functions are demonstrated.

Visual modeling reveals cryptic aspect in egg mimicry of Himalayan Cuckoo (Cuculus saturatus) on its host Blyth's Leaf Warbler (Phylloscopus reguloides)

Brood parasitism and egg mimicry of Himalayan Cuckoo (Cuculus saturatus) on its host Blyth's Leaf Warbler (Phylloscopus reguloides) were studied in south-western China from April to July 2009. The cuckoo laid a white egg with fine brown markings on the blunt end. The eggs were conspicuously bigger than the host's own, with 2.06 g in mass and 1.91 cm(3) in volume. Visual modeling showed that the cuckoo eggs, which from the human eye appeared to mimic the host eggs to a great extent, were completely different from the host eggs in both hue and chroma. The characters of the Himalayan Cuckoo nestling, reported for the first time, included two triangular and black patches on its gape, which appeared from four days old and became darker with age and growth. While this character also exists in nestlings of Oriental Cuckoo (C. optatus), it has not been found for other Cuculus species. Our results reveal cryptic aspects in the cuckoo-host egg color matching, which are not visible to the naked human eye, and indicate that high mimetic cuckoo eggs rejected by hosts, as determined by human observers in previous studies, might not be mimetic as birds see them.

Surface plasmon coupling with radiating dipole for enhancing the emission efficiency of a light-emitting diode

The experimental demonstrations of light-emitting diode (LED) fabrication with surface plasmon (SP) coupling with the radiating dipoles in its quantum wells are first reviewed. The SP coupling with a radiating dipole can create an alternative emission channel through SP radiation for enhancing the effective internal quantum efficiency when the intrinsic non-radiative recombination rate is high, reducing the external quantum efficiency droop effect at high current injection levels, and producing partially polarized LED output by inducing polarization-sensitive SP for coupling. Then, we report the theoretical and numerical study results of SP-dipole coupling based on a simple coupling model between a radiating dipole and the SP induced on a nearby Ag nanoparticle (NP). To include the dipole strength variation effect caused by the field distribution built in the coupling system (the feedback effect), the radiating dipole is represented by a saturable two-level system. The spectral and dipole-NP distance dependencies of dipole strength variation and total radiated power enhancement of the coupling system are demonstrated and interpreted. The results show that the dipole-SP coupling can enhance the total radiated power. The enhancement is particularly effective when the feedback effect is included and hence the dipole strength is increased.

Differential gene expression between the porcine morula and blastocyst

The survival and development of pre-implantation embryos are determinant factors affecting the outcome of animal reproduction. It is essential to transfer the expression of the genetic material from maternal sources, that is the ovum to the zygote before implantation to ensure successful development. Differentiation and transformation of blastomeres initiated during the morula and blastocyst stages is an important step of the embryonic development prior to implantation. We collected morula and early blastocyst samples from pure-bred Landrace pigs in vivo to study the differential gene expression patterns at these two stages. Total RNA was extracted from individual embryos and two rounds of amplification were employed. Two micrograms of antisense RNA, targets, were prepared and hybridized with each of four custom made oligo microarrays representing 24,000 porcine genes. The analyses of replicate hybridizations showed that among the 24,000 genes, 162 genes were expressed fivefold or greater in the morula compared to early blastocysts and 2126 genes were expressed fivefold or greater in early blastocysts compared to the morula. Of these differentially expressed genes, 1429 genes were functionally annotated with related human Gene Ontology terms. In addition to basic metabolic processes, genes related to signal transduction, transportation and cell differentiation were found in both stages and were up-regulated as embryo development proceeded. Real time polymerase chain reaction was utilized to quantify 12 genes differentially expressed in the 2 embryonic stages and validated the reliability of major evidences shown in microarrays. In conclusion, we have obtained a preliminary landscape of genes differentially expressed during the transition from morula to early blastocysts in pigs and showed a generally increased transcriptional activity, perhaps in preparation for implantation. Our results provide an opportunity to study the functions of these genes in relation to the development and survival of pre-implantation porcine embryos.

Effect of dopants on the soft magnetic properties and high frequency characteristics of FeCoBM (M = Ti, Nb, Hf, and Ta) thin films

Effect of dopants on the soft magnetic properties and high frequency characteristics of FeCoBM thin films (M = Ti, Nb, Hf, and Ta) have been studied. For (Fe0.55Co0.45)(100-x)B(x) (x = 5-15) thin films, with the increase of B content, the resistivity was increased because B could decrease the crystallinity of the films. The (Fe0.55Co0.45)90B10 thin film showed the optimum properties, where 4piM(s) = 16.1 kG, H(ce) = 64.2 Oe, H(ch) = 13.5 Oe, H(k) = 310 Oe and p = 338 microomega-cm. To reduce the coercivity of the film, the elements M, including Ti, Nb, Hf, and Ta, were selected to substitute for B in the FeCoB films. It was found that (Fe0.55Co0.45)90B6Ti2Nb2 thin film after annealing at a temperature of 200 degrees C for 30 min showed the optimal properties, where 4piM(s) = 15.8 kG, H(ce) = 4.8 Oe, H(ch) = 3.6 Oe, H(k) = 224 Oe and p = 290 microomega-cm. The theoretically calculated ferromagnetic resonance frequency of the developed films can be higher than 5 GHz.

A GaN photonic crystal membrane laser

The implementation of a series of optically pumped GaN photonic crystal (PhC) membrane lasers is demonstrated at room temperature. The photonic crystal is composed of a scalene-triangular arrangement of circular holes in GaN. Three defect structures are fabricated for comparing their lasing characteristics with those of perfect PhC. It is observed that all the lasing defect modes have lasing wavelengths very close to the band-edge modes in the perfect PhC structure. Although those lasing modes, including band-edge and defect modes, have different optical pump thresholds, different lasing spectral widths, different quality factors (Q factors), and different polarization ratios, all their polarization distributions show maxima in the directions around one of the hole arrangement axes. The similar lasing characteristics between the band-edge and defect modes are attributed to the existence of extremely narrow partial band gaps for forming the defect modes. Also, the oriented polarization properties are due to the scalene-triangle PhC structure. In one of the defect lasing modes, the lasing threshold is as low as 0.82 mJ cm(-2), the cavity Q factor is as large as 1743, and the polarization ratio is as large as 25.4. Such output parameters represent generally superior lasing behaviors when compared with previously reported implementations of similar laser structures.

[Brood parasitism and egg mimicry on Brownish-flanked Bush Warbler (Cettia fortipes) by Lesser Cuckoo (Cuculus poliocephalus)]

Nest fate of Brownish-flanked Bush Warbler (Cettia fortipes) was conducted in breeding seasons from 1999 to 2009 in Kuankuoshui Natural Reserve, Guizhou province. Predation rate, parasitism rate, hatching success, nesting success and reproductive success were surveyed and egg color was quantified using spectrophotometer. Principal component analysis, reflectance spectrum and Robinson Project were used to analyze the egg color of bush warbler and egg mimicry of Lesser Cuckoo (Cuculus poliocephalus) in parasitized nests. Our results indicated that the Brownish-flanked Bush Warbler suffered from high predation rate and relatively high parasitism rate of 49.26% and 9.18%, respectively. Reflectance analysis showed that the hue and chroma of Lesser Cuckoo eggs were highly mimetic but the egg brightness and ultraviolet reflectance were different from the bush warbler.

Au nanorings for enhancing absorption and backscattering monitored with optical coherence tomography

Preparation of a high-concentration Au nanoring (NR) water solution and its applications to the enhancement of image contrast in optical coherence tomography (OCT) and the generation of the photothermal effect in a bio-sample through localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance are demonstrated. Au NRs are first fabricated on a sapphire substrate with colloidal lithography and secondary sputtering of Au, and then transferred into a water solution through a liftoff process. By controlling the NR geometry, the LSP dipole resonance wavelength in tissue can cover a spectral range of 1300 nm for OCT scanning of deep tissue penetration. The extinction cross sections of the fabricated Au NRs in water are estimated to give levels of 10(-10)-10(-9) cm(2) near their LSP resonance wavelengths. The fabricated Au NRs are then delivered into pig adipose samples for OCT scanning. It is observed that, when resonant Au NRs are delivered into such a sample, LSP resonance-induced Au NR absorption results in a photothermal effect, making the opaque pig adipose cells transparent. Also, the delivered Au NRs in the intercellular substance enhance the image contrast of OCT scanning through LSP resonance-enhanced scattering. By continuously OCT scanning a sample, both photothermal and image contrast enhancement effects are observed. However, by continually scanning a sample with a low scan frequency, only the image contrast enhancement effect is observed.

Absorption enhancement of an amorphous Si solar cell through surface plasmon-induced scattering with metal nanoparticles

The simulation results of absorption enhancement in an amorphous-Si (a-Si) solar cell by depositing metal nanoparticles (NPs) on the device top and embedding metal NPs in a layer above the Al back-reflector are demonstrated. The absorption increase results from the near-field constructive interference of electromagnetic waves in the forward direction such that an increased amount of sunlight energy is distributed in the a-Si absorption layer. Among the three used metals of Al, Ag, and Au, Al NPs show the most efficient absorption enhancement. Between the two used NP geometries, Al nanocylinder (NC) are more effective in absorption enhancement than Al nanosphere (NS). Also, a random distribution of isolated metal NCs can lead to higher absorption enhancement, when compared with the cases of periodical metal NC distributions. Meanwhile, the fabrication of both top and bottom Al NCs in a solar cell results in further absorption enhancement. Misalignments between the top and bottom Al NCs do not significantly reduce the enhancement percentage. With a structure of vertically aligned top and bottom Al NCs, solar cell absorption can be increased by 52%.

Visfatin regulates genes related to lipid metabolism in porcine adipocytes

Visfatin is a visceral adipose tissue-specific adipocytokine that plays a positive role in attenuating insulin resistance by binding to the insulin receptor. Visfatin has been suggested to play a role in the regulation of lipid metabolism and inflammation; however, the mechanism remains unclear. We investigated the effects of visfatin on the regulation of gene expression in cultured porcine preadipocytes and differentiated adipocytes. In preadipocytes, the mRNA abundance of lipoprotein lipase and PPARgamma were significantly increased by visfatin or insulin treatment after 8 d (all P < 0.05). In the presence of insulin, the mRNA abundance of adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein was 24.7-fold greater than in the untreated group (P < 0.05), whereas visfatin alone had no effect on adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein mRNA abundance. Adipocyte differentiation was induced by insulin treatment for 8 d. In differentiated porcine adipocytes, exposure to insulin or visfatin for 24 h increased (P < 0.05) fatty acid synthase mRNA abundance but had no effect on the expression of sterol regulatory element binding-protein 1c mRNA. We also found a 5.8-fold upregulation of IL-6 expression in porcine adipocytes after 24 h of treatment with visfatin (P < 0.05). These results demonstrated that visfatin upregulated lipoprotein lipase expression in preadipocytes, potentially facilitating lipid uptake, and increased the gene expression of fatty acid synthase in differentiated adipocytes to potentially enhance lipogenic activity. Furthermore, visfatin can upregulate IL-6 expression in differentiated porcine adipocytes. The information presented in this study provides insights into the roles of visfatin in lipid metabolism in pigs.

Enhancing InGaN-based solar cell efficiency through localized surface plasmon interaction by embedding Ag nanoparticles in the absorbing layer

The use of localized surface plasmon (LSP) interaction for significantly enhancing InGaN absorption near its band edge and the overall efficiency of an InGaN-based solar cell by embedding Ag nanoparticles (NPs) in the InGaN absorbing layer is numerically demonstrated. The generation of LSP resonance on the embedded Ag NPs and the NP scattering can produce a field distribution in the InGaN layer for enhancing absorption. It is shown that the embedded Ag NPs do not significantly affect the transport of the photo-generated carriers. The distortion of static electrical stream lines in the solar cell due to the embedded Ag NP leads to a decrease of photocurrent by only a few percents. Based on the material parameter values we use, unless the surface recombination velocity at the interface between the Ag NP and surrounding InGaN is extremely high, Ag NP embedment in the absorbing layer of an InGaN-based solar cell can enhance its efficiency by up to 27%. Such an increase is significantly larger than that achieved by depositing metal NP on the top surface of a solar cell.

Diagnosis of oral submucous fibrosis with optical coherence tomography

The epithelium (EP) thickness and the standard deviation (SD) of A-mode scan intensity in the laminar propria (LP) layer are used as effective indicators for the diagnosis of oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) based on the noninvasive clinical scanning of a swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) system of approximately 6 mum in axial resolution (in tissue) and 103 dB in sensitivity. Compared with the corresponding parameters in healthy oral mucosal mucosa, in OSF mucosa, the EP thickness becomes smaller and the SD of A-mode scan intensity in the LP layer (LP SD) also becomes smaller. The LP SD can also be used for effectively differentiating OSF (small LP SD) from lesion (large LP SD). This application is particularly useful in the case of a lesion without a clear surface feature. Meanwhile, the use of the SD of A-mode scan intensity in the EP layer (EP SD) can further help in differentiating OSF (medium EP SD) from healthy oral mucosal (small EP SD) and lesion (large EP SD) conditions. Compared with the conventional method of maximum mouth opening measurement, the use of the proposed OCT scanning results can be a more effective technique for OSF diagnosis.

Fabrication of sphere-like Au nanoparticles on substrate with laser irradiation and their polarized localized surface plasmon behaviors

The fabrications of sphere-like Au nanoparticles (NPs) on sapphire, GaN, and SiO(2) substrates through the irradiation of a few pulses of 266-nm laser onto Au thin films deposited on the substrates are demonstrated. The top-view diameter, contact angle on substrate, surface population density, and surface coverage percentage of the NPs can be controlled by the Au thin film thickness, laser energy density, substrate choice, and the gas or liquid, in which the Au thin film is immersed during laser irradiation. Optical transmission measurements show clear in-plane and out-of-plane localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) features, including the air resonance feature dictated by the gas or liquid immersing the NPs during transmission measurement, the in-plane substrate resonance feature controlled by the substrate material and the contact angle, and the out-of-plane resonance feature, which is strongly influenced also by the substrate material and the contact angle. Numerical simulations based on the finite-element method using the experimental parameters show highly consistent LSPR spectral positions and their variation trends. From the simulation results, one can also observe the relative importance between NP absorption and scattering in contributing to the extinction. This simple laser-irradiation method for fabricating sphere-like Au NPs of no aggregation and of strong adhesion to the substrate is useful for developing polarization-sensitive LSPR bio-sensing.

Secretion profiles of venom alkaloids in Solenopsis geminata (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Taiwan

Solenopsis geminata (F.) was introduced into southern Taiwan decades ago and has continued to threaten the residents. Although the venom compositions of various fire ant species have been studied, the effects of environmental cues on the secretion pattern have received relatively little attention in an area with subtropical climate and high humidity, such as Taiwan. This study characterizes the effects of temperature and season on the venom compositions of S. geminata in Taiwan. Pure venom was sampled by using a microcapillary pipette and immersing the whole ant in hexane and subjected to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. The results showed that the ratio of cis C(11) to trans C(11) alkaloids in major workers was significantly higher than that in minor workers. No significant differences could be found in either the relative alkaloids content or the ratio of cis C(11) to trans C(11) alkaloids in venom of minor workers while rearing at four temperature conditions. Nevertheless, the ratio of cis C(11) to trans C(11) alkaloids in the venom of minor workers was the highest in spring and the lowest in winter. The results also showed that the body length, abdomen length, head length, head width, and venom volume differed significantly between major workers and minor workers of S. geminata. The venom volumes of these two castes were positively correlated with their body sizes.

Effective energy coupling and preservation in a surface plasmon-light emitter coupling system on a metal nanostructure

The simulation results of the coupling of a radiation dipole with a surface plasmon (SP), which is induced on a metal/dielectric interface of a single groove (SG) plus a grating structure, are demonstrated. With the SG structure, the dipole can effectively couple energy into an SP feature, which has a mixed nature of localized surface plasmon (LSP) and surface plasmon polariton (SPP). The SPP energy is confined by a grating structure with a well designed grating period and position. With such a cavity configuration, the SPP energy can be well preserved. Both the dipole-SP coupling behaviors in the frequency and time domains are numerically illustrated. The results are useful for designing a metal/dielectric interface nanostructure for implementing a SPASER (surface plasmon amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) system.

Study on the decay mechanisms of surface plasmon coupling features with a light emitter through time-resolved simulations

The transient behaviors of the dipole coupling with surface plasmon (SP) features in an Ag/dielectric-interface grating structure in order to understand the characteristics of those dipole-coupling features are demonstrated. In particular, the major decay mechanisms of those coupling features can be identified. For comparison, the time-resolved behaviors of the resonant surface plasmon polariton (SPP) coupling feature on a flat interface are also illustrated. Among the three major grating-induced SP-dipole coupling features, two of them are identified to be localized surface plasmons (LSPs). The third one is a grating-assisted SPP, which shows two decay components, corresponding to the first stage of SPP in-plane propagation and the second stage of coupling system decay. In all the dipole coupling features, metal dissipation can dominate the energy relaxation process, depending on the assumption of damping factor. All the dissipation rates are proportional to the assumed damping factor in the Drude model of the metal. The dissipation rates of the LSP and resonant SPP features are about the same as the damping rate, implying their local electron oscillation natures. The dissipation rate of the grating-assisted SSP feature is consistent with theoretical calculation. In the LSP features under study, dielectric-side emission is prominent. The coupled energy in the grating-assisted SPP feature can be efficiently stored in the coupling system due to its low emission efficiency and effective energy confinement through grating diffraction.

Effective indicators for diagnosis of oral cancer using optical coherence tomography

A swept-source optical coherence tomography system is used to clinically scan oral precancer and cancer patients for statistically analyzing the effective indicators of diagnosis. Three indicators are considered, including the standard deviation (SD) of an A-mode scan signal profile, the exponential decay constant (alpha) of an A-mode-scan spatial-frequency spectrum, and the epithelium thickness (T) when the boundary between epithelium and lamina propria can still be identified. Generally, in abnormal mucosa, the standard deviation becomes larger, the decay constant of the spatial-frequency spectrum becomes smaller, and epithelium becomes thicker. The sensitivity and specificity of the three indicators are discussed based on universal and individual relative criteria. It is found that SD and alpha are good diagnosis indicators for moderate dysplasia and squamous cell carcinoma. On the other hand, T is a good diagnosis indicator for epithelia hyperplasia and moderate dysplasia.

Three indicators are considered, including the standard deviation (SD) of an A-mode scan signal profile, the exponential decay constant (alpha) of an A-mode-scan spatial-frequency spectrum, and the epithelium thickness (T) when the boundary between epithelium and lamina propria can still be identified. Generally, in abnormal mucosa, the standard deviation becomes larger, the decay constant of the spatial-frequency spectrum becomes smaller, and epithelium becomes thicker. The sensitivity and specificity of the three indicators are discussed based on universal and individual relative criteria. It is found that SD and alpha are good diagnosis indicators for moderate dysplasia and squamous cell carcinoma. On the other hand, T is a good diagnosis indicator for epithelia hyperplasia and moderate dysplasia.

Localized surface plasmon-induced emission enhancement of a green light-emitting diode

The output enhancement of a green InGaN/GaN quantum-well (QW) light-emitting diode (LED) through the coupling of a QW with localized surface plasmons (LSPs), which are generated on Ag nanostructures on the top of the device, is demonstrated. The suitable Ag nanostructures for generating LSPs of resonance energies around the LED wavelength are formed by controlling the Ag deposition thickness and the post-thermal-annealing condition. With a 20 mA current injected onto the LED, enhancements of up to 150% in electroluminescence peak intensity and of 120% in integrated intensity are observed. By comparing this with a similar result for a blue LED previously published, it is confirmed that surface plasmon coupling for emission enhancement can be more effective for an InGaN/GaN QW of lower crystal quality, which normally corresponds to the emission of a longer wavelength.

Delineation of an oral cancer lesion with swept-source optical coherence tomography

We demonstrate the ex vivo imaging of an oral cancerous sample with a swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) system. With the axial resolution of 8 microm in free space and system sensitivity of 108 dB, we can well distinguish the normal and abnormal tissue portions in a sample. In particular, we analyze the lateral variation of A-scan profiles to show two parameters of SS-OCT signal for delineating an oral cancer lesion. One of the parameters is the decay constant in the exponential fitting of the SS-OCT signal intensity along depth. This decay constant decreases as the A-scan point moves laterally across the margin of a lesion. The other parameter is the standard deviation of the SS-OCT signal intensity fluctuation in an A-scan. This parameter increases significantly when the A-scan point is moved across the transition region between the normal and abnormal portions. Such parameters are useful for determining the margins of oral cancer.

Measurement of the hemoglobin oxygen saturation level with spectroscopic spectral-domain optical coherence tomography

We report the measurement of the hemoglobin (Hb) oxygen saturation level in human blood with a spectroscopic spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SSD-OCT) system based on the crossover behavior of Hb and oxyhemoglobin (HbO(2)) absorption coefficients around 800 nm. By calculating the ratio of the exponential decay constant of A-mode scan signal in the long-wavelength range (>800 nm) over that in the short-wavelength range (<800 nm), the relative oxygen saturation level of Hb can be calibrated. Such a relative level can be used for practical diagnosis application after a golden standard is built by comparing the variation of the OCT result with that of a conventional method, such as the use of a blood gas analyzer. In our experiment, the variation curve based on the SSD-OCT measurement, which has the advantages of noninvasive, real-time, and high-resolution measurements, is coincident with that of using a commercial blood gas analyzer.
