Characterizing the photodegradation-induced release of volatile organic compounds from bottled water containers

While plastic water bottles are known to potentially release various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when exposed to light, existing knowledge in this field remains limited. In this study, we systematically examined the composition, yield, and toxicity of VOCs released from six plastic containers obtained from different continents under UV-A and solar irradiation. After light exposure, all containers released VOCs, including alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, aldehydes, carboxylic acids, aromatics, etc. The 1#, 3#, 4#, 5#, and 6# containers exhibited 35, 32, 19, 24 and 37 species of VOCs, respectively. Specifically, the 2# container released 28 and 32 series of VOCs after 1-day (short-term) and 7-day (long-term) UV-A irradiation, respectively, compared to 30 and 32 species under solar irradiation. Over half of the VOCs identified were oxidized compounds alongside various short-chain hydrocarbons. Significant differences in VOC compositions among the containers were observed, potentially originating from light-induced aging and degradation of the polyethylene terephthalate structure in the containers. Toxicological predictions unveiled distinctive toxic characteristics of VOCs from each container. For example, among the various VOCs produced by the 2# container, straight-chain alkanes like n-hexadecane (544-76-3) were identified as the most toxic compounds. After long-term irradiation, the yield of these toxic VOCs from the 2# container ranged from 0.11 ng/g to 0.79 ng/g. Considering the small mass of a single bottle, the volatilization of VOCs from an individual container would be insignificant. Even after prolonged exposure to light, the potential health risks associated with inhaling VOCs when opening and drinking bottled water appear manageable.

Plasmid expression of Deinococcus radiodurans RecA confers UV-A protection to Escherichia coli with an inverse protein dose dependence, which does not exceed conspecific RecA protection

Low level expression in Escherichia coli of the RecA protein from the radiation resistant bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans protects a RecA deficient strain of E. coli from UV-A irradiation by up to ∼160% over basal UV-A resistance. The protection effect is inverse protein dose dependent: increasing the expression level of the D. radiodurans RecA (DrRecA) protein decreases the protection factor. This inverse protein dose dependence effect helps resolve previously conflicting reports of whether DrRecA expression is protective or toxic for E. coli. In contrast to the D. radiodurans protein effect, conspecific plasmid expression of E. coli RecA protein in RecA deficient E. coli is consistently protective over several protein expression levels, as well as consistently more protective to higher levels of UV-A exposure than that provided by the D. radiodurans protein. The results indicate that plasmid expression of D. radiodurans RecA can modestly enhance the UV resistance of living E. coli, but that the heterospecific protein shifts from protective to toxic as expression is increased.

Removal of tetracycline by ultraviolet/sodium percarbonate (UV/SPC)advanced oxidation process in water

Tetracycline (TC) was widely used and frequently detected in various water bodies, where the presence of TC posed a significant threat to the health of aquatic organisms. Furthermore, antibiotics were hardly degraded by biological treatment. Thus, in order to enhance the removal of TC, we proposed the use of a novel ultraviolet/sodium percarbonate (UV/SPC) advanced oxidation process and initiated an in-depth study. The study investigated the influence of oxidant dosage, initial pH, UV intensity, and TC concentration on the removal of TC. The results demonstrated that the UV/SPC system efficiently removed TC, with removal efficiency increasing as the SPC concentration increased. Within the pH range of 3-11, TC degradation exhibited minimal variation, indicating the UV/SPC system's strong adaptability to pH variations. The research on the impact of the water matrix on TC removal revealed that HCO3- had an inhibitory effect on TC degradation, while NO3- promoted TC degradation. Additionally, the presence of free radical species (·OH, ·CO3-, ·O2-) were detected and rate constants for the secondary reactions (k·OH,TC = 6.3 × 109 L mol-1·s-1, k·CO3-,TC = 3.4 × 108 L mol-1·s-1) were calculated, indicating that ·OH exhibited a stronger oxidative performance compared to ·CO3-. This study did not only present a novel strategy via UV/SPC to remove TC but also uncovered the unique role of ·CO3- for contaminant removal.

Enhanced detection of monoiodoacetic acid at ng/L level by ion chromatography with novel derivatization-free pretreatment

Concerns have recently arisen regarding the formation of carcinogenic and genotoxic iodinated haloacetic acids (HAAs), such as monoiodoacetic acid (MIAA), during the disinfection of iodine-containing water with chloramine. Existing detection methods for MIAA rely on either labor-intensive derivatization operations or expensive instruments, making analysis challenging. To bypass these issues, this study proposed a novel two-step liquid-liquid extraction strategy to enrich MIAA and then pioneered the integration of common ion chromatography (IC) with an ultraviolet detector to measure trace MIAA precisely. This novel approach achieved a remarkable 155.6-fold enrichment of MIAA and significantly reduced the need for water and chemicals, hence enhancing its efficiency and environmental friendliness. Besides, this method effectively removed coexisting anions and separated MIAA from other interferents by adjusting IC column and eluent conditions. The method detection limit of MIAA is an impressive 21.44 ng/L, and the recoveries in synthetic and real water samples ranged from 85 to 113%, with maximum deviations of 7.59%. We validated the reliability of our approach by comparing it with the USEPA 552.3 method. In conclusion, this IC-based method proves to be a robust and environment-benign solution for detecting trace MIAA in complex water components.

Exploring optical descriptors for rapid estimation of coastal sediment organic carbon and nearby land-use classifications via machine learning models

This study utilizes ultraviolet and fluorescence spectroscopic indices of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from sediments, combined with machine learning (ML) models, to develop an optimized predictive model for estimating sediment total organic carbon (TOC) and identifying adjacent land-use types in coastal sediments from the Yellow and Bohai Seas. Our results indicate that ML models surpass traditional regression techniques in estimating TOC and classifying land-use types. Penalized Least Squares Regression (PLR) and Cubist models show exceptional TOC estimation capabilities, with PLR exhibiting the lowest training error and Cubist achieving a correlation coefficient 0.79. In land-use classification, Support Vector Machines achieved 85.6 % accuracy in training and 92.2 % in testing. Maximum fluorescence intensity and ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm were crucial factors influencing TOC variations in coastal sediments. This study underscores the efficacy of ML models utilizing DOM optical indices for near real-time estimation of marine sediment TOC and land-use classification.

Combination of magnetic field and ultraviolet for fouling control in saline wastewater distribution systems

Fouling is a significant challenge for recycling and reusing saline wastewaters for industrial, agricultural or municipal applications. In this study, we propose a novel approach of magnetic field (MaF) and ultraviolet (UV) combined application for fouling mitigation. Results showed, combination of MaF and UV (MaF-UV) significantly decreased the content of biofouling and reduced the complexity of microbial networks, compared to UV and MaF alone treatments. This was due to MaF as pretreatment effectively reduced the water turbidity, improve the influent water quality of UV disinfection and increases UV transmittance, eliminating the adverse impacts of UV scattering and shielding, hence increased the inactivation effectiveness of UV disinfection process. MaF assisted UV also reduced the abundance of UV-resistant bacteria and inhibited the risk of bacterial photoreactivation and dark repair. Meanwhile, MaF-UV drastically reduced the contents of precipitates and particulate fouling by accelerating the transformation rate of CaCO3 crystal from compact calcite to loosen hydrated amorphous CaCO3, and enhancing the flocculation process. These findings demonstrated that MaF-UV is an effective anti-fouling strategy, and provide insights for sustainable application of saline wastewaters.

In vitro evaluation of an easy-to-remove orthodontic adhesive with photochromic property

OBJECTIVES

To develop a photochromic bracket adhesive (PCA) with modification using photochromic material and evaluate the biocompatibility, bond strength, photochromic property, and adhesive removal efficiency.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The resin-modified glass ionomer powder was mixed with the photochromic material and then blended with the liquid agent to form PCA. Biocompatibility was evaluated by CCK-8 kit, and shear bond strength (SBS) was measured. Stereoscopic microscopy and quantitative color analysis were used to assess the photochromic property. Bracket bonding and debonding procedures were performed on a head simulator with the assistance of an ultraviolet radiator. The effectiveness of adhesive removal during bonding and debonding procedures was assessed using a stereomicroscope. Removal time was recorded, and the enamel damage index after debonding was analyzed.

RESULTS

CCK-8 assay and SBS test indicated that 5wt.% mixing ratios of the photochromic material did not compromise the biocompatibility and SBS of the adhesive (PCA5). PCA5 showed photochromic properties and could help the operator remove adhesive more thoroughly without increasing enamel damage.

CONCLUSIONS

Photochromic adhesive (PCA5) can be good for orthodontic adhesive removal and therefore has good clinical translation potential.

Transcription profiles and phenotype reveal global response of Staphylococcus aureus exposed to ultrasound and ultraviolet stressors

Ultrasound and ultraviolet light have good inactivation performance against pathogens in sewage. In this study, the inactivation mechanisms of 60 kHz ultrasound and ultraviolet radiation against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) were studied from the perspectives of cell phenotype and transcriptome for the first time. The results showed that both ultrasound and ultraviolet treatments had adverse impacts on the cellular morphology of S. aureus to varying degrees at cellular level. The transcriptomic analysis revealed that there were 225 and 1077 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the ultrasound and ultraviolet treatments, respectively. The result revealed that both ultrasound and ultraviolet could interfere with the expression of the genes involved in ABC transporters, amino acid and fatty acid metabolism to influence the membrane permeability. Besides the membrane permeability, ultraviolet also could disturb the ATP synthesis, DNA replication and cell division through restraining the expression of several genes related to carbohydrate metabolism, peptidoglycan synthesis, DNA-binding/repair protein synthesis. Compared with the single inactivation pathway of ultrasound, ultraviolet inactivation of S. aureus is multi-target and multi-pathway. We believe that the bactericidal mechanisms of ultrasound and ultraviolet radiation presented by this study could provide theoretical guidance for the synergistic inactivation of pathogens in sewage by ultrasound and ultraviolet radiation in the future.

Electro-oxidation and UV irradiation coupled method for in-site removing pollutants from human body fluids in swimming pool

A comprehensive study was conducted to investigate how ultraviolet (UV) irradiation combined with electrochemistry (EC) can efficiently remove human body fluids (HBFs) related pollutants, such as urea/creatinine/hippuric acid, from swimming pool water (SPW). In comparison with the chlorination, UV, EC, and UV/chlorine treatments, the EC/UV treatment exhibited the highest removal rates for these typical pollutants (TPs) from HBFs in synthetic SPW. Specifically, increasing the operating current of the EC/UV process from 20 to 60 mA, as well as NaCl content from 0.5 to 3.0 g/L, improved urea and creatinine degradation while having no influence on hippuric acid. In contrast, EC/UV process was resilient to changes in water parameters (pH, HCO3-, and actual water matrix). Urea removal was primarily attributable to reactive chlorine species (RCS), whereas creatinine and hippuric acid removal were primarily related to hydroxyl radical, UV photolysis, and RCS. In addition, the EC/UV procedure can lessen the propensity for creatinine and hippuric acid to generate disinfection by-products. We can therefore draw the conclusion that the EC/UV process is a green and efficient in-situ technology for removing HBFs related TPs from SPW with the benefits of needless chlorine-based chemical additive, easy operation, continuous disinfection efficiency, and fewer byproducts production.

Synergistic mechanisms between chlorine-mediated electrochemical advanced oxidation and ultraviolet light for ammonia removal

The combination of chlorine-mediated electrochemical advanced oxidation (Cl-EAO) and ultraviolet (UV) radiation (UV-E/Cl) can efficiently remove ammonia from wastewater. However, the synergistic mechanisms between Cl-EAO and UV need to be explored in more detail. Thus, in this study, the ammonia oxidation performance of Cl-EAO and UV-E/Cl systems were compared, while the synergistic mechanisms were identified by the performance of UV/chlorine oxidation (UV-ClO) system and the results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, free radical inhibition assays, and determination of steady-state concentration of free radicals. It was found that, compared with the Cl-EAO system, UV increased the ammonia removal rate by 42.85% and reduced the active chlorine concentration (56.64%) and nitrate yield (53.61%). In the Cl-EAO, and UV-E/Cl systems, Cl• were detected, and the free radical inhibition assays and determination of steady-state concentration of free radicals suggested that UV increased the concentration of Cl• by 51.47%, resulting in Cl• becoming the major contributor to ammonia oxidation in the UV-E/Cl system. Besides, UV also increase the concentrations of HO• and Cl2•-, which further promoted the organic matter removal in the real domestic wastewater. This study also discussed the ammonia oxidation performance of the UV-E/Cl system in real domestic wastewater, even with the presence of significant levels of organic and inorganic anions in the wastewater, UV increased the ammonia oxidation by 21.95%. The results of this study thus clarify the mechanisms and potential applications of UV-E/Cl technology.

Ecotoxicity of polylactic acid microplastic fragments to Daphnia magna and the effect of ultraviolet weathering

Biodegradable plastics (BPs) are widely used as alternatives to non-BPs due to their inherent ability to undergo facile degradation. However, the ecotoxicological impact of biodegradable microplastics (MPs) rarely remains scientific documented especially to aquatic ecosystem and organisms compared to conventional microplastics. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the ecotoxicity of biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) MPs to Daphnia magna with that of conventional polyethylene (PE) MPs with and without ultraviolet (UV) treatment (4 weeks). The acute toxicity (48 h) of PLA MPs was significantly higher than that of PE MPs, potentially attributable to their elevated bioconcentration resulting from their higher density. UV treatment notably reduced the particle size of PLA MPs and induced new hydrophilic functional groups containing oxygen. Thus, the acute lethal toxicity of PLA MPs exhibited noteworthy increase, compared to before UV treatment after UV treatment, which was greater than that of UV-PE MPs. In addition, UV-PLA MPs showed markedly elevated reactive oxygen species concentration in D. magna compared to positive control. However, there was no significant increase in the level of lipid peroxidation, possibly due to successful defense by antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase and catalase). These findings highlight the ecotoxicological risks of biodegradable MPs to aquatic organisms, which require comprehensive long-term studies.

Effect of accelerated high-fluence riboflavin and rose bengal-mediated corneal cross-linking on resistance to enzymatic digestion

PURPOSE

This study evaluated the effect of high-fluence accelerated corneal cross-linking on the resistance to enzymatic digestion, assessing two chromophore/light combinations: riboflavin/UV-A light (RF/UV-A) and rose bengal/green light (RB/green).

METHODS

Freshly prepared ex-vivo porcine corneas (n = 189) were divided into 8 groups groups. Group A corneas were unirradiated controls without chromophore soaking (A0), or soaked with riboflavin (A1) or rose bengal (A2). Group B corneas underwent accelerated epi-off RF/UV-A CXL at fluences of 5.4 J/cm² (B1), 10 J/cm² (B2), or 15 J/cm² (B3). Group C corneas underwent accelerated epi-off RB/green CXL at fluences of either 10 J/cm² (C1) or 15 J/cm² (C2). Following CXL, all corneas were digested in 0.3% collagenase-A solution, and the time until complete dissolution was measured.

RESULTS

Non-irradiated controls exposed to RF and RB enhanced corneal resistance to collagenase digestion, with RB having a stronger effect than RF. RF/UV-A-treated corneas showed significantly increased digestion resistance with increasing fluence levels. RB/green-treated corneas displayed enhanced digestion resistance with each increase in fluence up to 10 J/cm²; a 15 J/cm² fluence yielded similar digestion resistance times to a 10 J/cm² fluence, suggesting a plateau effect in accelerated RB/green CXL protocols.

CONCLUSIONS

When compared to standard-fluence treatments, high-fluence accelerated epi-off CXL using both riboflavin and rose bengal significantly increases resistance to enzymatic digestion. The optimal settings for clinical protocols might be 15 J/cm² (30 mW/cm² for 8 min 20 s) for RF/UV-A and 10 J/cm² (15 mW/cm² for 11 min 7 s) for RB/Green Light.

Degradation of Various Organic Coatings via UV-Generated Sulfate Radicals

Degradation of organic coatings is essential for recycling valuable substrates. Despite the development of strategies for this purpose, the resulting degradations are typically constrained by the composition of the coating. This paper presents a simple strategy utilizing radicals induced by UV for the degradation of diverse organic coatings. The sulfate radicals, generated from UV-exposed ammonium persulfates, induce the degradation of various organic coatings, including layer-by-layer assembled coating composed of alginate and chitosan polymers as well as polydopamine coating. This strategy also facilitates the separation of two adhered substrates by degrading the adhesive polymer layer positioned between them. This novel approach enables the complete degradation of various organic coatings in aqueous conditions without imposing restrictions on their composition, leading to the recovery of the original surface properties of the substrate.

Role of reactive oxygen species in ultraviolet-induced photodamage of the skin

Reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as superoxides (O2 •-) and hydroxyl groups (OH·), are short-lived molecules containing unpaired electrons. Intracellular ROS are believed to be mainly produced by the mitochondria and NADPH oxidase (NOX) and can be associated with various physiological processes, such as proliferation, cell signaling, and oxygen homeostasis. In recent years, many studies have indicated that ROS play crucial roles in regulating ultraviolet (UV)-induced photodamage of the skin, including exogenous aging, which accounts for 80% of aging. However, to the best of our knowledge, the detailed signaling pathways, especially those related to the mechanisms underlying apoptosis in which ROS are involved have not been reviewed previously. In this review, we elaborate on the biological characteristics of ROS and its role in regulating UV-induced photodamage of the skin.

Mg(C3 O4 H2 )(H2 O)2 : A New Ultraviolet Nonlinear Optical Material Derived from KBe2 BO3 F2 with High Performance and Excellent Water-Resistance

Acquiring high-performance ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials that simultaneously exhibit a strong second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients, as short as possible SHG phase-matching (PM) wavelength and non-hygroscopic properties has consistently posed a significant challenge. Herein, through multicomponent modification of KBe2 BO3 F2 (KBBF), an excellent UV NLO crystal, Mg(C3 O4 H2 )(H2 O)2 , was successfully synthesized in malonic system. This material possesses a unique 2D NLO-favorable electroneutral [Mg(C3 O4 H2 )3 (H2 O)2 ]∞ layer, resulting in the rare coexistence of a strong SHG response of 3×KDP (@1064 nm) and short PM wavelength of 200 nm. More importantly, it exhibits exceptional water resistance, which is rare among ionic organic NLO crystals. Theoretical calculations revealed that its excellent water-resistant may be originated from its small available cavity volumes, which is similar to the famous LiB3 O5 (LBO). Therefore, excellent NLO properties and stability against air and moisture indicate it should be a promising UV NLO crystal.

Relationship of ultraviolet light exposure and cutaneous and systemic disease activity in youth with childhood-onset systemic lupus: Results from the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance Registry

Objective

To investigate the association between sun exposure measured by ultraviolet light index (UVI) and seasonality with rash and systemic disease activity in youth with childhood-onset systemic lupus (cSLE) from the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA) Registry.

Methods

We reviewed data on rash and disease activity from Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index 2000 (SLEDAI-2K) scores from cSLE CARRA Registry participants with visits between 2010 and 2019 and obtained UVI data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Our main exposures were UVI and season during the month of visit and one month prior to visit. We used mixed-effects logistic regression to examine an association between UVI/season and rash / SLEDAI-2K score, adjusting for age, sex, race and income.

Results

Among 1222 participants, with a mean of 2.3 visits/participant, 437 visits (15%) had rash and 860 (30%) had SLEDAI-2K score ≥ 5. There were no associations between UVI during the month prior to visit, or the month of the visit and odds of rash or elevated systemic activity. However, fall season was associated with increased odds of rash (OR = 1.59, p = 0.04), but there not increased disease activity.

Conclusion

While we found no association between UVI and rash or UVI and disease activity, further studies directly measuring UVI may help further understand whether a relationship exists between sun exposure and SLE disease activity and whether this is an area that continues to require clinical attention.

Systematic analysis of the scientific-technological production on the use of the UV, H2O2, and/or Cl2 systems in the elimination of bacteria and associated antibiotic resistance genes

This study presents a systematic review of the scientific and technological production related to the use of systems based on UV, H2O2, and Cl2 for the elimination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and genes associated with antibiotic resistance (ARGs). Using the Pro Know-C (Knowledge Development Process-Constructivist) methodology, a portfolio was created and analyzed that includes 19 articles and 18 patents published between 2011 and 2022. The results show a greater scientific-technological production in UV irradiation systems (8 articles and 5 patents) and the binary combination UV/H2O2 (9 articles and 4 patents). It was emphasized that UV irradiation alone focuses mainly on the removal of ARB, while the addition of H2O2 or Cl2, either individually or in binary combinations with UV, enhances the removal of ARB and ARG. The need for further research on the UV/H2O2/Cl2 system is emphasized, as gaps in the scientific-technological production of this system (0 articles and 2 patents), especially in its electrochemically assisted implementation, have been identified. Despite the gaps identified, there are promising prospects for the use of combined electrochemically assisted UV/H2O2/Cl2 disinfection systems. This is demonstrated by the effective removal of a wide range of contaminants, including ARB, fungi, and viruses, as well as microorganisms resistant to conventional disinfectants, while reducing the formation of toxic by-products.

The protective effect of silver nanoparticles' on epithelial cornea cells against ultraviolet is accompanied by changes in calcium homeostasis and a decrease of the P2X7 and P2Y2 receptors

PURPOSE

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of silver nanoparticles hydrocolloids (AgNPs) on human corneal epithelial cells. Epithelial cells form the outermost and the most vulnerable to environmental stimuli layer of the cornea in the eye. Mechanical stress, UV radiation, and pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites challenge the fragile homeostasis of the eye. To help combat stress, infection, and inflammation wide portfolio of interventions is available. One of the oldest treatments is colloidal silver. Silver nanoparticle suspension in water is known for its anti-bacterial anti-viral and antiprotozoal action. However, AgNPs interact also with host cells, and the character of the interplay between corneal cells and silver seeks investigation.

METHODS

The human epithelial corneal cell line (HCE-2) was cultured in vitro, treated with AgNPs, and subjected to UV. The cell's viability, migration, calcium concentration, and expression/protein level of selected proteins were investigated by appropriate methods including cytotoxicity tests, "wound healing" assay, Fluo8/Fura2 AM staining, qRT-PCR, and western blot.

RESULTS

Incubation of human corneal cells (HCE-2) with AgNP did not affect cells viability but limited cells migration and resulted in altered calcium homeostasis, decreased the presence of ATP-activated P2X7, P2Y2 receptors, and enhanced the expression of PACAP. Furthermore, AgNPs pretreatment helped restrain some of the deleterious effects of UV irradiation. Interestingly, AgNPs had no impact on the protein level of ACE2, which is important in light of potential SARS-CoV-2 entrance through the cornea.

CONCLUSIONS

Silver nanoparticles are safe for corneal epithelial cells in vitro.

Exploring the potential of the nano-based sunscreens and antioxidants for preventing and treating skin photoaging

Excessive exposure to sunlight, especially UV irradiation, causes skin photodamage. Sunscreens, such as TiO2 and ZnO, can potentially prevent UV via scattering, reflection, and absorption. Topical antioxidants are another means of skin photoprotection. Developing nanoparticles for sunscreens and antioxidants is recommended for photoaging prevention and treatment as it can improve uncomfortable skin appearance, stability, penetration, and safety. This study reviewed the effects of nano-sized sunscreens and antioxidants on skin photoprevention by examining published studies and articles from PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, which explore the topics of skin photoaging, skin senescence, UV radiation, keratinocyte, dermal fibroblast, sunscreen, antioxidant, and nanoparticle. The researchers of this study also summarized the nano-based UV filters and therapeutics for mitigating skin photoaging. The skin photodamage mechanisms are presented, followed by the introduction of current skin photoaging treatment. The different nanoparticle types used for topical delivery were also explored in this study. This is followed by the mechanisms of how nanoparticles improve the UV filters and antioxidant performance. Lastly, recent investigations were reviewed on nanoparticulate sunscreens and antioxidants in skin photoaging management. Sunscreens and antioxidants for topical application have different concepts. Topical antioxidants are ideal for permeating into the skin to exhibit free radical scavenging activity, while UV filters are prescribed to remain on the skin surface without absorption to exert the UV-blocking effect without causing toxicity. The nanoparticle design strategy for meeting the different needs of sunscreens and antioxidants is also explored in this study. Although the benefits of using nanoparticles for alleviating photodamage are well-established, more animal-based and clinical studies are necessary.

Insights into the fate and properties of organic halamines during ultraviolet irradiation: Implications for drinking water safety

Organic halamines compounds present a significant threat to the safety of drinking water due to their potential toxicity and stability. While Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection is commonly used for water treatment, its specific effects on organic halamines and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated eight amino acid-derived organic chlor- and bromamines as representative compounds. Our findings revealed that organic halamines have a slow hydrolysis rate (<10-3 M-1 s-1) and can persist in water for extended periods (30-2000 min). However, their disinfection efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus and their ability to degrade micropollutants like carbamazepine were found to be limited. Interestingly, under UV irradiation, the N-X bonds in organic halamines were observed to break, leading to accelerated decomposition and the generation of abundant free radicals. These free radicals synergistically facilitated the removal of micropollutants and the inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms. It is worth noting that this transformation of organic halamines during UV disinfection resulted in a slight increase in the concentrations of nitrogenous disinfection byproducts. These findings shed light on the behavior and characteristics of organic halamines during UV disinfection processes, providing crucial insights for effectively managing drinking water quality impacted by these compounds. By understanding the implications of organic halamines, we can refine water treatment strategies and ensure the safety of drinking water supplies.

High-Efficiency Ultraviolet Electroluminescence from Multi-Resonance Phosphine Oxide Polycyclic Aromatics

Efficient ultraviolet (UV) electroluminescent materials remain a great challenge, since short peak wavelength <400 nm and narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM) <50 nm are simultaneously required. In this sense, multi-resonance (MR) thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters featuring narrow-band emissions hold the promise for UV applications. Herein, a novel MR-TADF skeleton featuring carbazole-phosphine oxide (P=O) fused aromatics is developed to construct the first two UV MR emitters named CzP2PO and tBCzP2PO. In addition to synergistic resonance effects of P=O and N atom, sp3 -hybrid P atom renders the curved polycyclic planes of CzP2PO and tBCzP2PO, giving rise to their narrowband UV emissions with peak wavelengths <390 nm and FWHM<35 nm. Besides configuration quasi-planarization for radiation enhancement and quenching suppression, P=O moiety further enhances singlet-triplet coupling to facilitate reverse intersystem crossing, resulting in the state-of-the-art photoluminescence quantum yield of 62 % in tBCzP2PO doped films. As consequence, tBCzP2PO endowed its UV organic light-emitting diodes with the peak at 382 nm and FWHM of 32 nm, and especially the record-high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 15.1 % among all kinds of UV devices. Our results demonstrate great potential of P=O based MR emitters in practical applications including optoelectronics, biology and medicine science.

Advanced oxidation process for the treatment of industrial wastewater: A review on strategies, mechanisms, bottlenecks and prospects

Due to its complex and, often, highly contaminated nature, treating industrial wastewater poses a significant environmental problem. Many of the persistent pollutants found in industrial effluents cannot be effectively removed by conventional treatment procedures. Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) have emerged as a promising solution, offering versatile and effective means of pollutant removal and mineralization. This comprehensive review explores the application of various AOP strategies in industrial wastewater treatment, focusing on their mechanisms and effectiveness. Ozonation (O3): Ozonation, leveraging ozone (O3), represents a well-established AOP for industrial waste water treatment. Ozone's formidable oxidative potential enables the breakdown of a broad spectrum of organic and inorganic contaminants. This paper provides an in-depth examination of ozone reactions, practical applications, and considerations involved in implementing ozonation. UV/Hydrogen Peroxide (UV/H2O2): The combination of ultraviolet (UV) light and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has gained prominence as an AOP due to its ability to generate hydroxyl radicals (ȮH), highly efficient in pollutant degradation. The review explores factors influencing the efficiency of UV/H2O2 processes, including H2O2 dosage and UV radiation intensity. Fenton and Photo-Fenton Processes: Fenton's reagent and Photo-Fenton processes employ iron ions and hydrogen peroxide to generate hydroxyl radicals for pollutant oxidation. The paper delves into the mechanisms, catalyst selection, and the role of photoactivation in enhancing degradation rates within the context of industrial wastewater treatment. Electrochemical Advanced Oxidation Processes (EAOPs): EAOPs encompass a range of techniques, such as electro-Fenton and anodic oxidation, which employ electrode reactions to produce ȮH radicals. This review explores the electrochemical principles, electrode materials, and operational parameters critical for optimizing EAOPs in industrial wastewater treatment. TiO2 Photocatalysis (UV/TiO2): Titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalysis, driven by UV light, is examined for its potential in industrial wastewater treatment. The review investigates TiO2 catalyst properties, reaction mechanisms, and the influence of parameters like catalyst loading and UV intensity on pollutant removal. Sonolysis (Ultrasonic Irradiation): High-frequency ultrasound-induced sonolysis represents a unique AOP, generating ȮH radicals during the formation and collapse of cavitation bubbles. This paper delves into the physics of cavitation, sonolytic reactions, and optimization strategies for industrial wastewater treatment. This review offers a critical assessment of the applicability, advantages, and limitations of these AOP strategies in addressing the diverse challenges posed by industrial wastewater. It emphasizes the importance of selecting AOPs tailored to the specific characteristics of industrial effluents and outlines potential directions for future research and practical implementation. The integrated use of these AOPs, when appropriately adapted, holds the potential to achieve sustainable and efficient treatment of industrial wastewater, contributing significantly to environmental preservation and regulatory compliance.

Molecular Evolution of Malacostracan Short Wavelength Sensitive Opsins

Investigations of the molecular mechanisms behind detection of short, and particularly ultraviolet, wavelengths in arthropods have relied heavily on studies from insects due to the relative ease of heterologous expression of modified opsin proteins in model organisms like Drosophila. However, species outside of the Insecta can provide information on mechanisms for spectral tuning as well as the evolutionary history of pancrustacean visual pigments. Here we investigate the basis of spectral tuning in malacostracan short wavelength sensitive (SWS) opsins using phylogenetic comparative methods. Tuning sites that may be responsible for the difference between ultraviolet (UV) and violet visual pigment absorbance in the Malacostraca are identified, and the idea that an amino acid polymorphism at a single site is responsible for this shift is shown to be unlikely. Instead, we suggest that this change in absorbance is accomplished through multiple amino acid substitutions. On the basis of our findings, we conducted further surveys to identify spectral tuning mechanisms in the order Stomatopoda where duplication of UV opsins has occurred. Ancestral state reconstructions of stomatopod opsins from two main clades provide insight into the amino acid changes that lead to differing absorption by the visual pigments they form, and likely contribute the basis for the wide array of UV spectral sensitivities found in this order.

The accurate bypass of pyrimidine dimers by DNA polymerase eta contributes to ultraviolet-induced mutagenesis

Human xeroderma pigmentosum variant (XP-V) patients are mutated in the POLH gene, responsible for encoding the translesion synthesis (TLS) DNA polymerase eta (Pol eta). These patients suffer from a high frequency of skin tumors. Despite several decades of research, studies on Pol eta still offer an intriguing paradox: How does this error-prone polymerase suppress mutations? This review examines recent evidence suggesting that cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) are instructional for Pol eta. Consequently, it can accurately replicate these lesions, and the mutagenic effects induced by UV radiation stem from the deamination of C-containing CPDs. In this model, the deamination of C (forming a U) within CPDs leads to the correct insertion of an A opposite to the deaminated C (or U)-containing dimers. This intricate process results in C>T transitions, which represent the most prevalent mutations detected in skin cancers. Finally, the delayed replication in XP-V cells amplifies the process of C-deamination in CPDs and increases the burden of C>T mutations prevalent in XP-V tumors through the activity of backup TLS polymerases.

Ultraviolet light C in promoting rapid healing of delayed wound union: A case report

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE

The purpose of this case is to present a useful phototherapy for rapid healing of recalcitrant postoperative wound disunion due to implantation of allogeneic bone and metal.

CASE PRESENTATION

In this case, a middle-aged man was diagnosed as complex fracture of the left tibial plateau which caused movement loss, swelling and pain of the left knee. The patient's wound disunion was still present after been surgery for 26 days, with yellowish liquid persistently oozing out of the wound after several wound dressing. We treated the postoperative wound with ultraviolet light C (UVC) to promote wound healing.

CLINICAL DISCUSSION

Incision disunion is a common complication of surgery, which increases patients' hospital days. Prevention and treatment of wound disunion is one of the key considerations for perioperative management.

CONCLUSION

During 3-day consecutive UVC treatment, the yellowish wound exudate gradually reduced and disappeared. Subsequently, the non-healing postoperative wound scared over and healed rapidly. As a convenient, non-invasive, non-polluting and effectively physical therapy, UVC can promote rapid healing of recalcitrant wound disunion caused by implants in complex tibial plateau fracture.

9-Hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid plays a crucial role in human skin photoaging

Human skin is regularly exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight, leading to photoaging, which differs from intrinsic aging. Although the acute effects of UV exposure have been extensively studied, limited research has addressed the long-term consequences of chronic UV exposure. This study aimed to investigate the underlying causes of chronic photoaging. A questionnaire-based assessment of sunlight exposure was conducted among volunteers in their 20s and 50s, and the stratum corneum of their skin was analyzed for bioactive lipid content. Volunteers were categorized into low and high UV exposure groups based on the questionnaire scores. The analysis results revealed a significant increase in 9-hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid (9-HODE) levels in the skin of individuals in their 50s with high UV exposure. However, UV exposure did not affect 9-HODE levels in the skin of individuals in their 20s. In vitro experiments further indicated that 9-HODE contributes to chronic inflammation, pigmentary changes, and extracellular matrix alterations during photoaging. Specifically, 9-HODE stimulated cytokine production [interleukin-6 (IL6), IL8, and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF)] and reduced dickkopf-1 (DKK1) production in keratinocytes. In fibroblasts, 9-HODE stimulated matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP1) and MMP3 production while reducing collagen I (COL1) production. The expression of G2A, the receptor for 9-HODE, was also confirmed in fibroblasts, suggesting that 9-HODE exerts its effects via G2A, as observed in keratinocytes. Overall, these findings indicate that 9-HODE is a mediator of chronic photoaging and highlight its potential significance in photoaging prevention.

Accuracy and adequacy of photoprotection in pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus patients, and the effect of education on photoprotection: a prospective study

BACKGROUND

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic autoimmune disease that is associated with multiple organ involvement and leads to significant morbidity and mortality. One of the important environmental factors that influences the exacerbation of preexisting SLE is ultraviolet (UV) radiation, so photoprotection is essential. The aims of this study were to evaluate the accuracy and adequacy of photoprotection in pediatric SLE patients, and to investigate the effect of education on photoprotection.

METHODS

SLE patients aged ≤ 18 years who attended pediatric outpatient clinics were prospectively enrolled. The accuracy and adequacy of photoprotection were assessed by the questionnaire, and compared between baseline and the ≥ 3-month follow-up timepoint. Comprehensive written and verbal photoprotection education was provided to all patients and parents/caregivers after the first assessment.

RESULTS

One hundred patients were included (mean age 13.6 ± 2.5, 92% female). At the first assessment, 79% of patients used sunscreen with a sunburn protection factor ≥ 30 (77%) and protection grade of ultraviolet A +  +  + (63%). Fifty-two percent of patients applied sunscreen every day. A minority of patients applied an adequate amount of sunscreen (32%), used water-resistant sunscreen (34%), used lip balm with sunscreen (23%) and reapplied sunscreen when sweating (13%). The most commonly missed areas when applying sunscreen were the ears and dorsum of the feet. The least often practiced sun protection behavior was wearing sunglasses. The most often reported activities during the peak UV index, were playing with friends and walking to the cafeterias. At the second assessment, the majority of photoprotection practices were improved in all aspects except using water-resistant sunscreen, reapplying sunscreen when sweating, applying sunscreen on the ears and dorsum of feet, and wearing sunglasses. The main reason for not using sunscreen switched from thinking it was unnecessary at the first assessment to disliking its texture at the second assessment.

CONCLUSIONS

Education on photoprotection was effective in improving photoprotection practices. The photoprotection practices that need to be specifically emphasized are applying an adequate amount of sunscreen and using lip balm with sunscreen. The photoprotection which were least practiced at both the first and seconds assessments were reapplying sunscreen when sweating, applying sunscreen on the ears and dorsum of the feet, and wearing sunglasses.

A review of factors affecting the formation and roles of primary and secondary reactive species in UV254-based advanced treatment processes

The presence of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in water has been threatening human health and aquatic ecosystems worldwide. Ultraviolet-based advanced treatment processes (UV-ATPs) are one of the most effective and promising technologies to transform OMPs in water; therefore, an increasing number of emerging UV-ATPs are proposed. However, appropriate selection of UV-ATPs for practical applications is challenging because each UV-ATP generates different types and concentrations of reactive species (RSs) that may not be sufficient to degrade specific types of OMPs. Furthermore, the concentrations and types of RSs are highly influenced by anions and dissolved organic matter (DOM) coexisting in real waters, making systematic understandings of their interfering mechanisms difficult. To identify and address the knowledge gaps, this review provides a comparison of the generations and variations of various types of RSs in different UV-ATPs. These analyses not only prove the importance of water matrices on formation and consumption of primary and secondary RSs under different conditions, but also highlight the non-negligible roles of optical properties and reactivities of DOM and anions. For example, different UV-ATPs may be applicable to different target OMPs under different conditions; and the concentrations and roles of secondary RSs may outperform those of primary RSs in OMP degradation for real applications. With continuous progress and outstanding achievements in the UV-ATPs, it is hoped that the findings and conclusions of this review could facilitate further research and application of UV-ATPs.

Comparison of inactivation characteristics between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in water by synergistic UV and chlorine disinfection

Disinfection is essential in water and wastewater treatment process as a guarantee for microbial safety. This study systematically investigated: (i) the inactivation characteristics of bacteria widely existed in water, including Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichiacoli) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis spores), by sequential UV and chlorine disinfection processes (UV-Cl and Cl-UV), simultaneous UV and chlorine disinfection process (UV/Cl); and (ii) the disinfection mechanisms on different bacteria. The combination of UV and chlorine disinfection could inactive bacteria at lower doses, but showed no synergistic effect on E. coli. Contrarily, disinfection results indicated that UV/Cl performed an obvious synergistic effect on highly disinfectant-resistant bacteria (e.g. S. aureus and B. subtilis spores). Specifically, UV/Cl at the UV dose of 9 mJ/cm2 and chlorine dose of 2 mg-Cl/L could inactivate S. aureus completely. Moreover, the effectiveness of UV/Cl on the removal of indigenous bacteria in actual water conditions was also confirmed. In short, the study provides significant theoretical and practical implications for ensuring microbial safety during water treatment and use.

Dual-wavelength UV-visible metalens for multispectral photoacoustic microscopy: A simulation study

Photoacoustic microscopy is advancing with research on utilizing ultraviolet and visible light. Dual-wavelength approaches are sought for observing DNA/RNA- and vascular-related disorders. However, the availability of high numerical aperture lenses covering both ultraviolet and visible wavelengths is severely limited due to challenges such as chromatic aberration in the optics. Herein, we present a groundbreaking proposal as a pioneering simulation study for incorporating multilayer metalenses into ultraviolet-visible photoacoustic microscopy. The proposed metalens has a thickness of 1.4 µm and high numerical aperture of 0.8. By arranging cylindrical hafnium oxide nanopillars, we design an achromatic transmissive lens for 266 and 532 nm wavelengths. The metalens achieves a diffraction-limited focal spot, surpassing commercially available objective lenses. Through three-dimensional photoacoustic simulation, we demonstrate high-resolution imaging with superior endogenous contrast of targets with ultraviolet and visible optical absorption bands. This metalens will open new possibilities for downsized multispectral photoacoustic microscopy in clinical and preclinical applications.

Comparing the effect of electron beam, beta and ultraviolet C exposure on the luminescence emission of commercial dosimeters

This paper reports on the luminescence characterization of TLD-100 (LiF: Ti, Mg), TLD-200 (CaF₂: Dy), TLD-400 (CaF₂: Mn) and GR-200 (LiF: Mg, Cu, P) dosimeters exposed to electro beam, beta and ultraviolet C radiation -UVC-. All of them show high sensitivity to radiation regardless of whether it is ionizing or partially ionizing radiation based on their luminescence properties (cathodoluminescence -CL- or thermoluminescence -TL-). CL emission differs significantly among them in shape and intensity due to their chemical compositions. LiF samples display three maxima at: (i) 300-450 nm linked to intrinsic and structural defects, (ii) a green waveband probably due to F₃⁺ centres or the presence of hydroxyl groups and (iii) the red-infrared emission band associated with F₂ centres. However, CL spectra from the CaF₂ dosimeters display meaningful differences due to the dopant. TLD-200 is characterized by an emission with four sharp individual peaks in the green-IR spectral region (due to the Dy³⁺), whilst TLD-400 exhibits a broad maximum peaked at ̴500 nm (linked to the Mn²⁺). On the other hand, the variation in the TL glow curves allows to discriminate the TLDs exposed to beta and UVC radiation since they give rise to different chemical-physical processes and that have been studied from the estimation of the kinetic parameters by means of the Computerised Glow Curve Deconvolution (CGCD) method.

Ultraviolet-based synergistic processes for wastewater disinfection: A review

Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation is widely used for wastewater disinfection but suffers from low inactivation rates and can cause photoreactivation of microorganisms. Synergistic disinfection with UV and oxidants is promising for enhancing the inactivation performance. This review summarizes the inactivation effects on representative microorganisms by UV/hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), UV/ozone (O₃), UV/persulfate (PS), UV/chlorine, and UV/chlorine dioxide (ClO₂). UV synergistic processes perform better than UV or an oxidant alone. UV mainly attacks the DNA or RNA in microorganisms; the oxidants H₂O₂ and O₃ mainly attack the cell walls, cell membranes, and other external structures; and HOCl and ClO₂ enter cells and oxidize proteins and enzymes. Free radicals can have strong oxidation effects on cell walls, cell membranes, proteins, enzymes, and even DNA. At similar UV doses, the inactivation rates of Escherichia coli with UV alone, UV/H₂O₂, UV/O₃, UV/PS (peroxydisulfate or peroxymonosulfate), and UV/chlorinated oxidant (chlorine, ClO₂, and NH₂Cl) range from 2.03 to 3.84 log, 2.62-4.30 log, 4.02-6.08 log, 2.93-5.07 log, and 3.78-6.55 log, respectively. The E. coli inactivation rates are in the order of UV/O₃ ≈ UV/Cl₂ > UV/PS > UV/H₂O₂. This order is closely related to the redox potentials of the oxidants and quantum yields of the radicals. UV synergistic disinfection processes inhibit photoreactivation of E. coli in the order of UV/O₃ > UV/PS > UV/H₂O₂. The activation mechanisms and formation pathways of free radicals with different UV-based synergistic processes are presented. In addition to generating HO·, O₃ can reduce the turbidity and chroma of wastewater to increase UV penetration, which improves the disinfection performance of UV/O₃. This knowledge will be useful for further development of the UV-based synergistic disinfection processes.

Photoaging and theory-based intervention to improve sun protection behaviors in students in Zahedan: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Excessive exposure to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause skin cancer. Implementing new technologies and computational algorithms can potentially change the outlook for cancer prevention and facilitate early detection of melanoma, thereby reducing mortality. Mobile technology as a potential provider of health services in delivering health information and conducting interventions, especially in skin fields, where a significant part of diagnosis is based on visual examination, can be important. Evidence showed that constructs of protection motivation theory (PMT) were good predictors of practicing sun protection behaviors in students. This study will investigate whether mobile applications improve safe and healthy behaviors and affect students' reduced UV exposure.

METHOD/DESIGN

This randomized controlled trial will be conducted on 320 students on 06/04/2022 in Zahedan. We created mobile applications (Sunshine and Skin Health and WhatsApp apps). Sunshine and Skin Health app allows users to see their changed faces in three stages of adolescence, middle age, and old age based on sun protection behavior. The WhatsApp app has 27 health messages based on PMT theory, eight educational files, and a skin cancer clip that will be sent through WhatsApp during a week. Randomization will be performed using a 1:1 (control: intervention) ratio. The primary endpoint is the group difference in sun-protective behaviors and PMT constructs immediately after the intervention. The secondary endpoint is the group difference in sun-protective behaviors and PMT constructs at a 3-month follow-up. The data will be analyzed in SPSS.22, and the significance level will be considered at 0.05.

DISCUSSION

The present study examines the effectiveness of mobile applications in improving sun-protective behaviors. If this intervention enhances sun protection behaviors, it can prevent students' skin damage.

Characterization of UV/chlorine process for micropollutant abatement by probe compound-based kinetic models

Micropollutant (MP) abatement efficiencies are critical information for optimizing water treatment process for cost-effective operations. Nevertheless, due to the vast number of MPs in real water matrices, it is infeasible to measure their abatement efficiencies individually in practical applications. In this study, a probe compound-based kinetic model was developed for generalized prediction of MP abatement in various water matrices by the ultraviolet (UV)/chlorine process. The results show that by measuring the depletion of three probe compounds (ibuprofen, primidone, and dimetridazole) spiked in the water matrix, the exposures of main reactive chlorine species (RCS including chlorine radicals (Cl•), dichloride radicals (Cl₂^-•) and chlorine oxide radicals (ClO•)) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) during the UV/chlorine process could be calculated using the model. Based on the determined exposures, the abatement efficiencies of various MPs in different water matrices (e.g., surface water, groundwater, and wastewater) could generally be predicted with acceptable accuracy by the model without prior water-specific calibration. In addition, the relative contribution of UV photolysis and oxidation with active chlorine, RCS, and •OH to MP abatement could be quantitatively simulated using the model to clarify the abatement mechanism of MPs during the UV/chlorine process. The probe-based kinetic model can thus offer a useful tool to guide practical water and wastewater treatment for MP abatement and to explore the mechanism of UV/chlorine process.

Photodistributed Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis: a systematic review and proposal for a new diagnostic classification

BACKGROUND

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure is commonly reported as a risk factor for Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). However, minimal evaluation of photo-induced SJS/TEN has been conducted. Thus, this review identifies all cases of SJS/TEN that are linked to an acute exposure of UVR and outlines the unifying characteristics of these cases. Furthermore, the theoretical pathogenesis, differential diagnoses, and proposed diagnostic criteria are defined.

METHODS

PubMed, Google Scholar, and other databases and websites were searched from inception to September 2021 to identify studies that met inclusion criteria. The following keywords were utilized: "Stevens-Johnson syndrome" and "toxic epidermal necrolysis" with "ultraviolet," "photodistributed," "photo-induced," "photosensitivity," and "photo." One reviewer assessed study characteristics, with confirmation by a second. The risk of bias was assessed independently by another.

RESULTS

Thirteen patient cases were identified, all reporting ultraviolet radiation prior to rash onset and an underlying causal drug. Case classifications included 7/13 SJS and 6/13 TEN. All cases described the rash as photodistributed with UVR exposure prior to rash onset (delay of 1-3 days) and a causal drug. 10 cases provided evidence that the photodistributed rash lacked linear demarcation (as in a sunburn) with satellite target-like lesions. No cases described a flu-like prodrome.

DISCUSSION

Mucositis, palmar and plantar rash, a positive Nikolsky sign, and a prolonged disease course can help distinguish from photosensitive reactions, while a negative direct immunofluorescence test is important to distinguish from other photo-induced disorders.

CONCLUSION

Physicians should be aware that UVR may precipitate SJS/TEN in patients taking susceptible drugs. After a 24-h delay from UVR exposure, a non-distinct, photodistributed rash appears with no flu-like prodrome and progresses for at least 48 h to include vesiculobullous eruptions and mucous membrane involvement. Photodistributed SJS/TEN appears to be photo-drug-induced with a unique onset and rash presentation that should be recognized as a distinct diagnosis.

Gaseous products generated from polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate during ultraviolet irradiation: Mechanism, pathway and toxicological analyses

The generation of various degradation products from microplastics (MPs) has been confirmed under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The gaseous products, primarily volatile organic compounds (VOCs), are usually overlooked, leading to potential unknown risks to humans and the environment. In this study, the generation of VOCs from polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) under UV-A (365 nm) and UV-C (254 nm) irradiation in water matrixes were compared. More than 50 different VOCs were identified. For PE, UV-A-derived VOCs mainly included alkenes and alkanes. On this basis, UV-C-derived VOCs included various oxygen-containing organics, such as alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acid and even lactones. For PET, both UV-A and UV-C irradiation induced the generation of alkenes, alkanes, esters, phenols, etc., and the differences between these two reactions were insignificant. Toxicological prioritization prediction revealed that these VOCs have diverse toxicological profiles. The VOCs with the highest potential toxicity were dimethyl phthalate (CAS: 131-11-3) from PE and 4-acetylbenzoate (3609-53-8) from PET. Furthermore, some alkane and alcohol products also presented high potential toxicity. The quantitative results indicated that the yield of these toxic VOCs from PE could reach 10² μg g^-1 under UV-C treatment. The degradation mechanisms of MPs included direct scission by UV irradiation and indirect oxidation induced by diverse activated radicals. The former mechanism was dominant in UV-A degradation, while UV-C included both mechanisms. Both mechanisms contributed to the generation of VOCs. Generally, MPs-derived VOCs can be released from water to the air after UV irradiation, posing a potential risk to ecosystems and human beings, especially for UV-C disinfection indoors in water treatments.

Investigation of UV-treated mesenchymal stem cells in an in vitro wound model

This study examines the effects of ultraviolet-induced adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells and their supernatants on wound healing regarding cell viability, percentage of wound healing, released cytokine, and growth factors. It has been reported in previous studies that mesenchymal stem cells are resistant to ultraviolet light and have a protective effect on skin cells against ultraviolet-induced damage. At the same time, there are many studies in the literature about the positive effects of cytokines and growth factors secreted by mesenchymal stem cells. Based on this information, the effects of ultraviolet-induced adipose-derived stem cells and supernatants containing their secreted cytokines and growth factors on an in vitro two-dimensional wound model created with two different cell lines were investigated in this study. It was determined from the results that the highest cell viability and the least apoptotic staining were 100 mJ in mesenchymal stem cells (**p < 0.01). Furthermore, analysis of cytokines and growth factors collected from supernatants also supported 100 mJ as the optimal ultraviolet dose. It was observed that cells treated with ultraviolet and their supernatants significantly increased cell viability and wound-healing rate over time compared to other groups. In conclusion, with this study, it has been shown that adipose-derived stem cells exposed to ultraviolet light can have an important use in wound healing, both with their potential and with the more cytokines and growth factors they secrete. However, further analysis and animal experiments should be performed before clinical use.

Multiple roles of UV/KMnO4 in cyanobacteria containing water treatment: Cell inactivation & removal, and microcystin degradation

Cyanobacterial blooms present great challenges to drinking water treatment and human health. The novel combination of potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) and ultraviolet (UV) radiation is engaged as a promising advanced oxidation process in water purification. This study investigated the treatment of a typical cyanobacteria, Microcystis aeruginosa by UV/KMnO₄. Cell inactivation was significantly improved by UV/KMnO₄ treatment, compared to UV alone or KMnO₄ alone, and cells were completely inactivated within 35 min by UV/KMnO₄ in natural water. Moreover, effective degradation of associated microcystins was simultaneously achieved at UV fluence rate of 0.88 mW cm^-2 and KMnO₄ dosages of 3-5 mg L^-1. The significant synergistic effect is possibly attributable to the highly oxidative species produced during UV photolysis of KMnO₄. In addition, the cell removal efficiency via self-settling reached 87.9 % after UV/KMnO₄ treatment, without additional coagulants. The fast in situ generated manganese dioxide was responsible for the enhancement of M. aeruginosa cell removal. This study firstly reports multiple roles of UV/KMnO₄ process in cyanobacterial cell inactivation and removal, as well as simultaneous microcystin degradation under practical conditions.

High-Intensity Ultraviolet-C Irradiation Efficiently Inactivates SARS-CoV-2 Under Typical Cold Chain Temperature

SARS-CoV-2 contaminated items in the cold chain becomes a threat to public health, therefore the effective and safe sterilization method fit for the low temperature is needed. Ultraviolet is an effective sterilization method while its effect on SARS-CoV-2 under low-temperature environment is unclear. In this research, the sterilization effect of high-intensity ultraviolet-C (HIUVC) irradiation against SARS-CoV-2 and Staphylococcus aureus on different carriers at 4 °C and - 20 °C was investigated. The results showed that dose of 15.3 mJ/cm² achieved more than 3 log reduction of SARS-CoV-2 on gauze at 4 °C and - 20 °C. The vulnerability of coronavirus to HIUVC under - 20 °C was not significantly different than those under 4 °C. Four models including Weibull, biphasic, log-linear tail and log linear were used to fit the survival curves of SARS-CoV-2 and Staphylococcus aureus. The biphasic model fitted best with R² ranging from 0.9325 to 0.9878. Moreover, the HIUVC sterilization correlation between SARS-CoV-2 and Staphylococcus aureus was established. This paper provides data support for the employment of HIUVC under low-temperature environment. Also, it provides a method of using Staphylococcus aureus as a marker to evaluate the sterilization effect of cold chain sterilization equipment.

Radiation modeling of microplasma UV lamps for design analysis and optimization

Microplasma UV lamps have recently emerged as viable excimer-based sources of UV radiation, garnering significant attention during the recent COVID-19 pandemic for their use in disinfection applications because of their ability to emit human-safe far-UVC (200-240 nm) spectrums. An accurate model to simulate the radiation profile of microplasma UV lamps is of paramount importance to develop efficient microplasma lamp-implemented systems. We developed a 3D numerical model of microplasma UV lamps using the ray optics method. The simulation results for lamp irradiance and fluence rate were experimentally validated with standard optical radiometry and actinometry measurements, respectively. To improve the optical efficiency of microplasma lamps, an in-depth analysis of radiation behavior inside the standard commercially available lamp was performed using the geometrical optics method, and several potential scenarios were explored. A 2D modeling of an individual microcavity indicated that the current common lamp design can be significantly improved by preventing radiation loss, and small modifications in optical design can greatly increase the energy performance of the system. Based on the findings of this study, several virtual design concepts were proposed, and their performances were numerically compared with that of the original design of commercial microplasma lamps. The developed model can potentially be integrated with hydrodynamic and kinetic models for the virtual prototyping of complex photoreactors operating with UV microplasma lamps.

Ultraviolet assisted liquid spray dielectric barrier discharge plasma-induced vapor generation for sensitive determination of arsenic by atomic fluorescence spectrometry

In this study, a novel sensitive method for As determination by atomic fluorescence spectrometry was developed based on UV-assisted liquid spray dielectric barrier discharge (UV-LSDBD) plasma-induced vapor generation. It was found that prior-UV irradiation greatly facilitates As vapor generation in LSDBD likely because of the increased generation of active substances and the formation of As intermediates with UV irradiation. The experimental conditions affecting the UV and LSDBD processes (such as formic acid concentration, irradiation time, the flow rates of sample, argon and hydrogen) were optimized in detail. Under the optimum conditions, As signal measured by LSDBD can be enhanced by about 16 times with UV irradiation. Furthermore, UV-LSDBD also offers much better tolerance to coexisting ions. The limit of detection was calculated to be 0.13 μg L^-1 for As, and the relative standard deviation of the repeated measurements was 3.2% (n = 7). The accuracy and effectiveness of this new method were further verified by the analysis of simulated natural water reference sample and real water samples. In this work, UV irradiation was utilized for the first time as an enhancement strategy for PIVG, which opens a new approach for developing green and efficient vapor generation methods.

Association between meteorological factors and COVID-19 transmission in low- and middle-income countries: A time-stratified case-crossover study

BACKGROUND

Evidence is limited regarding the association between meteorological factors and COVID-19 transmission in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the independent and interactive effects of temperature, relative humidity (RH), and ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the spread of COVID-19 in LMICs.

METHODS

We collected daily data on COVID-19 confirmed cases, meteorological factors and non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) in 2143 city- and district-level sites from 6 LMICs during 2020. We applied a time-stratified case-crossover design with distributed lag nonlinear model to evaluate the independent and interactive effects of meteorological factors on COVID-19 transmission after controlling NPIs. We generated an overall estimate through pooling site-specific relative risks (RR) using a multivariate meta-regression model.

RESULTS

There was a positive, non-linear, association between temperature and COVID-19 confirmed cases in all study sites, while RH and UV showed negative non-linear associations. RR of the 90th percentile temperature (28.1 °C) was 1.14 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02, 1.28] compared with the 50th percentile temperature (24.4 °C). RR of the10th percentile UV was 1.41 (95% CI: 1.29, 1.54). High temperature and high RH were associated with increased risks in temperate climate but decreased risks in tropical climate, while UV exhibited a consistent, negative association across climate zones. Temperature, RH, and UV interacted to affect COVID-19 transmission. Temperature and RH also showed higher risks in low NPIs sites.

CONCLUSION

Temperature, RH, and UV appeared to independently and interactively affect the transmission of COVID-19 in LMICs but such associations varied with climate zones. Our results suggest that more attention should be paid to meteorological variation when the transmission of COVID-19 is still rampant in LMICs.

Pulsed ultraviolet (PUV) disinfection of artificially contaminated seawater seeded with high levels of pathogen disease indicators as an alternative for the shellfish industry depuration systems

The increase in pathogen levels in seawater threatens the safety of entire aquatic ecosystems. Foodborne pathogens can potentially accumulate in shellfish, especially in filter feeders such as bivalves, requiring an efficient depuration process before consumption. Alternative approaches to promote a cost-efficient purge at depuration plants are urgently needed. A small prototype pulsed ultraviolet (PUV) light recirculation system was designed, and its depuration potential was tested in a seawater matrix artificially contaminated with high levels of microbial pathogens Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium, Bacillus cereus and Candida albicans. The analysis of treatment parameters including voltage, number of pulses and duration of treatment was performed to ensure the highest reduction in contaminant levels. Optimal PUV disinfection was attained at 60 pulses/min at 1 kV for 10 min (a UV output of 12.9 J/cm²). All reductions were statistically significant, and the greatest was observed for S. aureus (5.63 log₁₀), followed by C. albicans (5.15 log₁₀), S. typhimurium (5 log₁₀), B. cereus (4.59 log₁₀) and E. coli (4.55 log₁₀). PUV treatment disrupted the pathogen DNA with the result that S. aureus, C. albicans and S. typhimurium were not detectable by PCR. Regulations were reviewed to address the applicability of PUV treatment as a promising alternative to assist in the reduction of microbial pathogens at depuration plants due to its high efficiency, short treatment period, high UV dose and recirculation system as currently employed in shellfish depuration plants.

Recent Insight into UV-induced Oxidative Stress and Role of Herbal Bioactives in the Management of Skin Aging

Skin is a defensive barrier that protects the body against sun rays and other harmful environmental elements. Sun rays contain ultraviolet rays, UVA (320-400 nm) and UVB (280-320 nm), which are highly harmful to the skin, leading to photoaging. Nowadays, sunscreen products are being utilized to protect the skin against photodamage. Conventional sunscreens are useful but cannot provide skin protection against UV rays for a longer period of time. Therefore, they need to be applied frequently. Aromatic compounds (ACs)-based sunscreens may filter out the UV rays but give rise to several side effects, like premature aging, stress, atopic dermatitis, keratinocytes (KCs) damage, genetic interruption, and malignant melanoma due to deposition of their toxic metabolites on the skin. The concept of natural medicines has become popular worldwide because of their safety and efficacy. Natural medicines have been proven to possess a wide array of biological properties, including antioxidant, antityrosinase, antielastase, antiwrinkle, antiaging, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, etc., against sun rays-mediated skin damage. The present review article is focused on UV-induced oxidative stress, and pathological and molecular targets with updates on herbal bioactives for the management of skin aging.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a well-implemented process for water disinfection. The development of emergent UV sources, such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs), has afforded new possibilities for advanced oxidation processes. The emission wavelength is considered to be an important factor for photo-chemical processes in terms of both biological damage and energetic efficiency, as the inactivation mechanisms and mode-of-action may differ according to the wavelength that is applied. In addition, these processes merit exploration for inactivating emerging pathogens, such as marine vibrios, that are important bacteria to control in maritime activities. The main goal of this study was to compare the disinfection efficacy of several UV-LED driven processes with different modes of action. First, the effect of UV-LEDs was assessed at different UV ranges (UV-A, UV-B, or UV-C). Second, the possible enhancement of a combination with hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) or peroxymonosulfate salt (HSO₅^-) was investigated under two different application strategies, i.e. simultaneous or sequential. The results obtained indicate a high sensitivity of Vibrio alginolyticus to UV radiation, especially under UV-B (k_obs = 0.24 cm²/mJ) and UV-C (k_obs = 1.47 cm²/mJ) irradiation. The highest inactivation rate constants were obtained for UV/HSO₅^- (k_obs (cm²/mJ)=0.0007 (UV-A); 0.39 (UV-B); 1.79 (UV-C)) with respect to UV/H₂O₂ (k_obs (cm²/mJ)=0.0006 (UV-A); 0.26 (UV-B); and 1.54 (UV-C)) processes, however, regrowth was avoided only with UV/H₂O₂. Additionally, the disinfection enhancement caused by a chemical addition was more evident in the order UV-A > UV-B > UV-C. By applying H₂O₂ (10 mg/L) or HSO₅^- (2.5 mg/L) in a sequential mode before the UV, negligible effects were obtained in comparison with the simultaneous application. Finally, promising electrical energy per order (EE_O) values were obtained as follows: UV/HSO₅^- (EE_O (kWh/m³)=1.68 (UV-A); 0.20 (UV-B); 0.04 (UV-C)) and UV/H₂O₂ (EE_O (kWh/m³)=2.15 (UV-A); 0.32 (UV-B); 0.04 (UV-C)), demonstrating the potential of UV-LEDs for disinfection in particular activities such as the aquaculture industry or maritime transport.

Photoluminescence in the Garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus)

Every year, more and more discoveries of photoluminescence in different mammal species are made. The more recent cases thus far have been in duck-billed platypus (Ornithorhyncus anatinus), New World squirrels (Glaucomys spp.) and springhare (Pedetidae). Now we can add another species to the list: the garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus), an endemic rodent to Europe, currently categorized as Near Threatened (NT) by the IUCN. The fluorescence was described and compared qualitatively in museum specimens, deceased and hibernating animals. The feet and nose of the hibernating dormouse displayed greenish-blue photoluminescence under UV light through a yellow filter, whereas the fur was bright red. The live animal had more vivid red colouring than the museum specimen. The fading and changing of the colour and brightness of photoluminescence was observed in a recently deceased animal and even more strongly in museum specimens.

Mutation and apoptosis are well-coordinated for protecting against DNA damage-inducing toxicity in Drosophila

BACKGROUND

Apoptotic cell death is an important survival system for multicellular organisms because it removes damaged cells. Mutation is also a survival method for dealing with damaged cells in multicellular and also unicellular organisms, when DNA lesions are not removed. However, to the best of our knowledge, no reports have comprehensively explored the direct relationship between apoptosis and somatic cell mutations induced by various mutagenic factors.

RESULTS

Mutation was examined by the wing-spot test, which is used to detect somatic cell mutations, including chromosomal recombination. Apoptosis was observed in the wing discs by acridine orange staining in situ. After treatment with chemical mutagens, ultraviolet light (UV), and X-ray, both the apoptotic frequency and mutagenic activity increased in a dose-dependent manner at non-toxic doses. When we used DNA repair-deficient Drosophila strains, the correlation coefficient of the relationship between apoptosis and mutagenicity, differed from that of the wild-type. To explore how apoptosis affects the behavior of mutated cells, we determined the spot size, i.e., the number of mutated cells in a spot. In parallel with an increase in apoptosis, the spot size increased with MNU or X-ray treatment dose-dependently; however, this increase was not seen with UV irradiation. In addition, BrdU incorporation, an indicator of cell proliferation, in the wing discs was suppressed at 6 h, with peak at 12 h post-treatment with X-ray, and that it started to increase again at 24 h; however, this was not seen with UV irradiation.

CONCLUSION

Damage-induced apoptosis and mutation might be coordinated with each other, and the frequency of apoptosis and mutagenicity are balanced depending on the type of DNA damage. From the data of the spot size and BrdU incorporation, it is possible that mutated cells replace apoptotic cells due to their high frequency of cell division, resulting in enlargement of the spot size after MNU or X-ray treatment. We consider that the induction of mutation, apoptosis, and/or cell growth varies in multi-cellular organisms depending on the type of the mutagens, and that their balance and coordination have an important function to counter DNA damage for the survival of the organism.

Electronically excited states of formic acid investigated by theoretical and experimental methods

Absolute cross-section values are reported from high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption measurements of gas-phase formic acid (HCOOH) in the photon energy range 4.7-10.8 eV (265-115 nm), together with quantum chemical calculations to provide vertical energies and oscillator strengths. The combination of experimental and theoretical methods has allowed a comprehensive assignment of the electronic transitions. The VUV spectrum reveals various vibronic features not previously reported in the literature, notably associated with (3pa'←10a'), (3p'a'←10a'), (3sa'←2a″) and (3pa'←2a″) Rydberg transitions. The assignment of vibrational features in the absorption bands reveal that the C=O stretching, v₃^'a', the H'-O-C' deformation, v₅^'a^', the C-O stretching, v₆^'a^', and the O=C-O' deformation, v₇^'a^' modes are mainly active. The measured absolute photoabsorption cross sections have also been used to estimate the photolysis lifetime of HCOOH in the upper stratosphere (30-50 km), showing that solar photolysis is an important sink at altitudes above 30 km but not in the troposphere. Potential energy curves for the lowest-lying electronic excited states, as a function of the C=O coordinate, are obtained employing time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). These calculations have shown the relevance of internal conversion from Rydberg to valence character governing the nuclear dynamics, yielding clear evidence of the rather complex multidimensional nature of the potential energy surfaces involved.

Investigation of the ultrastructures and retinal arrangements of larval stomatopod eyes

Though the transparent apposition eyes of larval stomatopod crustaceans lack most of the unique retinal specializations known from their adult counterparts, increasing evidence suggests that these tiny pelagic organisms possess their own version of retinal complexity. In this paper, we examined the structural organization of larval eyes in six species of stomatopod crustaceans across three stomatopod superfamilies using transmission electron microscopy. The primary focus was to examine retinular cell arrangement of the larval eyes and characterize the presence of an eighth retinular cell (R8), which is typically responsible for UV vision in crustaceans. For all species investigated, we identified R8 photoreceptor cells positioned distal to the main rhabdom of R1-7 cells. This is the first evidence that R8 photoreceptor cells exist in larval stomatopod retinas, and among the first identified in any larval crustacean. Considering recent studies that identified UV sensitivity in larval stomatopods, we propose that this sensitivity is driven by this putative R8 photoreceptor cell. Additionally, we identified a potentially unique crystalline cone structure in each of the species examined, the function of which is still not understood.

Enhanced production of sugars and UV-shielded lignin/PAN fiber mats from chemi-mechanical pulps

This study investigated poplar pretreatments by chemi-mechanical pulping (CMP) under different beating degrees and alkali concentrations. The enzyme-mediated hydrolysis of pretreated poplar was enhanced by deacetylation and delignification. Meanwhile, the remaining lignin residues were used to produce lignin/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber mats by electrospinning. These mats exhibited excellent mechanical and UV-blocking performance when the lignin was obtained from pulps under milder alkali concentrations (5 g/L). ³¹P nuclear magnetic resonance (³¹P NMR) and two-dimensional heteronuclear single-quantum correlation nuclear magnetic resonance (2D HSQC NMR) data revealed that increasing the beating degree at low alkali concentration during the CMP process led to the cleavage of β-O-4' interunit linkages and re-condensation in lignin, releasing several phenolic groups. Lignin with more linear β-O-4' interunit linkages and lesser phenolic groups, obtained from treatment of CMP with lower alkali concentration (5 g/L) and beating degree (20°SR), resulted in the corresponding lignin/PAN fiber mats exhibiting better mechanical performance. Further, lignin, along with the increased phenolic-OH and COOH, and p-hydroxybenzoate (PB) units with a more extended conjugate structure, derived from CMP under lower alkali concentration (5 g/L) and higher beating degree (45°SR), led to a stronger ultraviolet (UV) absorption in the corresponding lignin/PAN mats. To summarize, this study reports a mild and low-pollution biomass pretreatment method (CMP) that can efficiently regulate the lignin structure and exhibit efficient anti-ultraviolet properties. The corresponding UV-blocking fiber mats can be potentially used as materials for wearable fabrics.
