Abstract
BACKGROUND Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum are closely related protozoan parasites that are considered important causes of abortion in livestock, causing huge economic losses. Hunan Province ranks 12th in the production of beef and mutton in China. However, limited data are available on the seroprevalence, risk factors and molecular characterization of T. gondii and N. caninum in beef cattle and goats in Hunan province, China. METHODS Sera of 985 beef cattle and 1147 goats were examined for the presence of specific antibodies against T. gondii using indirect hemagglutination test (IHAT) and anti-N. caninum IgG using competitive-inhibition enzyme-linked immunoassay assay (cELISA). Statistical analysis of possible risk factors was performed using PASW Statistics. Muscle samples of 160 beef cattle and 160 goats were examined for the presence of T. gondii DNA (B1 gene) and N. caninum DNA (Nc-5 gene) by nested PCR. The B1 gene-positive samples were genotyped at 10 genetic markers using the multilocus nested PCR-RFLP (Mn-PCR-RFLP). RESULTS Specific IgG against T. gondii were detected in 8.3% (82/985) and 13.3% (153/1147) and against N. caninum in 2.1% (21/985) and 2.0% (23/1147) of the beef cattle and goats, respectively. Based on statistical analysis, the presence of cats, semi-intensive management mode and gender were identified as significant risk factors for T. gondii infection in beef cattle. Age was a significant risk factor for T. gondii infection in goats (P < 0.05), and age > 3 years was a significant risk factor for N. caninum infection in beef cattle (P < 0.05). PCR positivity for T. gondii was observed in three beef samples (1.9%; 3/160) and seven chevon samples (4.4%; 7/160). Genotyping of PCR positive samples identified one to be ToxoDB#10. The N. caninum DNA was observed in one beef sample (0.6%; 1/160) but was negative in all chevon samples. CONCLUSIONS To our knowledge, this is the first large-scale serological and molecular investigation of T. gondii and N. caninum and assessment of related risk factors in beef cattle and goats in Hunan Province, China. The findings provide baseline data for executing prevention and control of these two important parasites in beef cattle and goats in China.

Abstract
Trichomonads are protozoan symbionts with the capacity to infect vertebrates including humans and non-human primates (NHPs), sometimes with pathogenic effects. However, their diversity and prevalence in NHPs in China are poorly understood. A total of 533 fecal samples were collected from captive NHPs in Yunnan Province, China, of which 461 samples from Macaca fascicularis and 72 from Macaca mulatta. Trichomonadidae species were identified using PCR amplification of the ITS-1/5.8S/ITS-2 sequences. The overall prevalence of trichomonads in NHPs was determined to be 11.4% (61/533), with gender, diarrhea, and region identified as potential risk factors for the infections. Sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis identified three species of trichomonads, i.e., Trichomitopsis minor (n = 45), Pentatrichomonas hominis (n = 11), and Tetratrichomonas sp. (n = 5). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report Trichomitopsis minor infection in NHPs in China. Of note, Pentatrichomonas hominis is generally recognized as a parasitic organism affecting humans. Collectively, our results suggest that NHPs are potential sources of zoonotic trichomonad infections, highlighting the importance of surveillance and control measures to protect human and animal populations.

Abstract
Cattle ticks (Rhipicephalus microplus) are important economic ectoparasites causing direct and indirect damage to cattle and leading to severe economic losses in cattle husbandry. It is common knowledge that R. microplus is a species complex including five clades; however, the relationships within the R. microplus complex remain unresolved. In the present study, we assembled the complete mitochondrial genome of clade C by next-generation sequencing and proved its correctness based on long PCR amplification. It was 15,004 bp in length and consisted of 13 protein genes, 22 transfer genes, and two ribosomal genes located in the two strains. There were two copies of the repeat region (pseudo-nad1 and tRNA-Glu). Data revealed that cox1, cox2, and cox3 genes were conserved within R. microplus with small genetic differences. Ka/Ks ratios suggested that 12 protein genes (excluding nad6) may be neutral selection. The genetic and phylogenetic analyses indicated that clade C was greatly close to clade B. Findings in the current study provided more data for the identification and differentiation of the R. microplus complex and made up for the lack of information about R. microplus clade C.

Abstract
Mixed carbon sources have been developed for denitrification to eliminate the "carbon dependency" problem of single carbon. The metabolic correlation between different carbon sources is significant as guidance for the development of novel mixed carbon sources. In this study, to explore the metabolic similarity of denitrifying carbon sources, we selected alcohols (methanol, ethanol, and glycerol) and saccharide carbon sources (glucose, sucrose, and starch). Batch denitrification experiments revealed that methanol-acclimated sludge improved the denitrification rate of both methanol (14.42 mg-N/gMLVSS*h) and ethanol (9.65 mg-N/gMLVSS*h), whereas ethanol-acclimated sludge improved the denitrification rate of both methanol (7.80 mg-N/gMLVSS*h) and ethanol (22.23 mg-N/gMLVSS*h). In addition, the glucose-acclimated sludge and sucrose-acclimated sludge possibly improved the denitrification rate of glucose and sucrose, and the glycerol-acclimated sludge improved the denitrification rate of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), alcohols, and saccharide carbon sources. Functional gene analysis revealed that methanol, ethanol, and glycerol exhibited active alcohol oxidation and glyoxylate metabolism, and glycerol, glucose, and sucrose exhibited active glycolysis metabolism. This indicated that the similarity in the denitrification metabolism of these carbon sources was based on functional gene similarity, and glycerol-acclimated sludge exhibited the most diverse metabolism, which ensured its good denitrification effect with other carbon sources.

Abstract
The combination of chlorine-mediated electrochemical advanced oxidation (Cl-EAO) and ultraviolet (UV) radiation (UV-E/Cl) can efficiently remove ammonia from wastewater. However, the synergistic mechanisms between Cl-EAO and UV need to be explored in more detail. Thus, in this study, the ammonia oxidation performance of Cl-EAO and UV-E/Cl systems were compared, while the synergistic mechanisms were identified by the performance of UV/chlorine oxidation (UV-ClO) system and the results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, free radical inhibition assays, and determination of steady-state concentration of free radicals. It was found that, compared with the Cl-EAO system, UV increased the ammonia removal rate by 42.85% and reduced the active chlorine concentration (56.64%) and nitrate yield (53.61%). In the Cl-EAO, and UV-E/Cl systems, Cl• were detected, and the free radical inhibition assays and determination of steady-state concentration of free radicals suggested that UV increased the concentration of Cl• by 51.47%, resulting in Cl• becoming the major contributor to ammonia oxidation in the UV-E/Cl system. Besides, UV also increase the concentrations of HO• and Cl2•-, which further promoted the organic matter removal in the real domestic wastewater. This study also discussed the ammonia oxidation performance of the UV-E/Cl system in real domestic wastewater, even with the presence of significant levels of organic and inorganic anions in the wastewater, UV increased the ammonia oxidation by 21.95%. The results of this study thus clarify the mechanisms and potential applications of UV-E/Cl technology.

Abstract
High-purity 1T'-WS2 film has been experimentally synthesized [Nature Materials, 20, 1113-1120 (2021)] and theoretically predicted to be a two-dimensional (2D) superconducting material with Dirac cones [arXiv:2301.11425]. In the present work, we further study the superconducting properties of monolayer 1T'-WS2 by applying biaxial tensile strain. It is shown that the superconducting critical temperature Tc firstly increases and then decreases with respect to tensile strains, with the highest superconducting critical temperature Tc of 7.25 K under the biaxial tensile strain of 3%. In particular, we find that Dirac cones also exist in several tensile strained cases. Our studies show that monolayer 1T'-WS2 may provide a good platform for understanding the superconductivity of 2D Dirac materials.

Abstract
An innovative salamo-like fluorescent chemical sensor H2L, has been prepared that can be utilized to selectively detect Cu2+ and B4O72- ions. Cu2+ ions can bind to oxime state nitrogen and phenol state oxygen atoms in the chemosensor H2L, triggering the LMCT effect leading to fluorescence enhancement. The crystal structure of the copper(II) complex, named as [Cu(L)], has been achieved via X-ray crystallography, and the sensing mechanism has been confirmed by further theoretical calculations with DFT. Besides, the sensor H2L recognizes B4O72- ions causing an ICT effect resulting in bright blue fluorescence. Moreover, the sensor has relatively high selectivity and sensitivity for Cu2+ and B4O72- ions, and the detection limits are 1.02 × 10-7 and 2.06 × 10-7 M, respectively. In addition, the good biocompatibility and excellent water solubility of the sensor H2L make it very advantageous in practical applications, using H2L powder for fingerprint visualization, using H2L to identify the phenomenon of B4O72- ions emitting bright blue fluorescence, making it an ink that can print encrypted messages on A4 paper, in addition to this, based on H2L, the real water sample was tested for Cu2+ ion recognition, and finally the test strip experiment was carried out.

Abstract
The ultrashort-sludge retention time activate sludge (USAS) process is considered promising for the recovery of energy and resource from wastewater. In this study, we developed five USAS systems (with sludge retention time (SRT) of 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and 4 d), and investigated the nitrogen and phosphorus removal, as well as the microbial community, in the USAS systems. The results revealed that the activated sludge in the USAS system with a shorter SRT can capture more organic matter from wastewater, with organic matter mineralization, capture, and loss rates of 12.9-45.9, 42.4-62.3, and 18.2-24.8%, respectively. In addition, ammonia oxidization only occurred in the USAS systems with SRTs of 3 and 4 d, and all the USAS systems with different SRTs exhibited phosphorus-removal ability. The microbial community analysis results revealed that the relative abundance of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria (such as Thauera) increased with an increase in the SRT.

Abstract
Allergic diseases can notably affect a patient's quality of life. World Health Organization (WHO) has identified these diseases as one of the key areas for research and prevention in the 21st century. Currently, allergen-specific immunotherapy is viewed as a potential treatment approach that could modify the natural progression of allergic diseases, thus being recognized as a crucial tactic in their prevention and treatment. Nonetheless, the broad implementation of allergen-specific immunotherapy in clinical settings continues to confront challenges. One significant issue is the absence of standardized centers for subcutaneous allergen-specific immunotherapy. This article presents several perspectives and recommendations for establishing a standardized subcutaneous allergen-specific immunotherapy center.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy(LPD) has become the goal of lots of minimally invasive surgical centers in recent years. Postoperative pancreatic fistula(POPF) is still the barrier to attaining the above goal. Thus, improving anastomosis techniques to reduce the rate of POPF has been a hotspot of surgery. Blumgart pancreaticojejunostomy is considered one of the best anastomosis procedures, with low rates of POPF. However, the original Blumgart pancreaticojejunostomy method is not easy for laparoscopic operation. In consequence, we modified a Blumgart pancreaticojejunostomy technique with a simple and practicable procedure and applied to LPD. METHODS We collected and retrospectively analyzed the perioperative clinical data of patients who underwent modified Blumgart anastomosis from February 2017 to September 2022. The above patients included 53 cases in open pancreaticojejunostomy(OPD) and 58 cases in LPD. After propensity score matching, 44 cases were included for comparison in each group. RESULTS After propensity score matching, the average time for pancreaticojejunostomy was about 30 min in the LPD group. The Clinically relevant POPF(CR-POPF) rate was 9.1%. The length of postoperative hospitalization was 13.1 days. Compared with the OPD group, The CR-POPF rate in the LPD group are not significant differences. But the postoperative length of hospital stay was significantly shorter in the LPD group. Besides, there were no other severely postoperative complications between two groups. CONCLUSION The modified Blumgart anastomosis technique applied to LPD in our Center not only has simple and convenient properties but also low rate of CR-POPF. And this method may be a good choice for surgeons to begin to carry out LPD.

Abstract
Chlorine-Mediated Electrochemical Advanced Oxidation (Cl-EAO) technology is a promising approach for ammonia removal from wastewater due to its numerous advantages, including small infrastructure, short processing time, easy operation, high security, and high nitrogen selectivity. This paper provides a review of the ammonia oxidation mechanisms, characteristics, and anticipated applications of Cl-EAO technology. The mechanisms of ammonia oxidation encompass breakpoint chlorination and chlorine radical oxidation, although the contributions of active chlorine, Cl, and ClO remain uncertain. This study critically examines the limitations of existing research and suggests that a combination of determining free radical concentration and simulating a kinetic model would help elucidate the contributions of active chlorine, Cl, and ClO to ammonia oxidation. Furthermore, this review comprehensively summarizes the characteristics of ammonia oxidation, including kinetic properties, influencing factors, products, and electrodes. The amalgamation of Cl-EAO technology with photocatalytic and concentration technologies has the potential to enhance ammonia oxidation efficiency. Future research should concentrate on clarifying the contributions of active chlorine, Cl, and ClO to ammonia oxidation, the production of chloramines and other byproducts, and the development of more efficient anodes for the Cl-EAO process. The main objective of this review is to enhance the understanding of the Cl-EAO process. The findings presented herein contribute to the advancement of Cl-EAO technology and provide a foundation for future studies in this field.

Abstract
The domestic pig louse Haematopinus suis (Linnaeus, 1758) (Phthiraptera: Anoplura) is a common ectoparasite of domestic pigs, which can act as a vector of various infectious disease agents. Despite its significance, the molecular genetics, biology and systematics of H. suis from China have not been studied in detail. In the present study, the entire mitochondrial (mt) genome of H. suis isolate from China was sequenced and compared with that of H. suis isolate from Australia. We identified 37 mt genes located on nine circular mt minichromosomes, 2.9 kb-4.2 kb in size, each containing 2-8 genes and one large non-coding region (NCR) (1,957 bp-2,226 bp). The number of minichromosomes, gene content, and gene order in H. suis isolates from China and Australia are identical. Total sequence identity across coding regions was 96.3% between H. suis isolates from China and Australia. For the 13 protein-coding genes, sequence differences ranged from 2.8%-6.5% consistent nucleotides with amino acids. Our result is H. suis isolates from China and Australia being the same H. suis species. The present study determined the entire mt genome of H. suis from China, providing additional genetic markers for studying the molecular genetics, biology and systematics of domestic pig louse.

Abstract
With the global increase in the prevalence of allergic diseases and the rising life expectancy, it is anticipated that the number of elderly patients affected by allergies will also increase. While it was previously believed that allergies primarily affected children and adolescents and diminished with age, epidemiological studies indicate a growing prevalence of allergies in the elderly. Various allergic diseases have similar prevalence rates in the elderly as in the general population, and some, like drug allergies, are even more prevalent in this age group. Allergic diseases in the elderly often present with atypical symptoms, leading to challenges in differential diagnosis and treatment. This paper discusses immunosenescence and the distinct features of allergic diseases in older individuals. The goal is to raise awareness among healthcare providers about allergies in older adults, encourage preventive measures, and improve the quality of life for elderly patients with allergies. By managing allergies better, it can also help with the management of other chronic diseases in the elderly and contribute to better overall health for everyone.

Abstract
The increase in the prevalence of allergic diseases has brought a substantial medical, social and economic burden. The development of allergology is relatively lag behind the allergy prevalence in China. Both the numbers of allergy specialty and allergist are scarce and thus the diagnosis and treatment of allergic disease does not meet the needs of allergy patients. This article summarizes the status of medical education and specialty development of allergology in China and abroad. In addition, the key strategies for promoting the development of allergy education and specialty were discussed, including undergraduate and graduate education of allergology, the orientation of allergy specialty and related specialty/subspecialty, the integration of allergology into the standardized residents training system, training and certification of allergists, and multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment model.

Abstract
Using an integrated bioinformatics approach to find novel biomarkers that can predict asthma severity. From June 2022 to December 2022, this clinical medical study was conducted and completed in the Department of Allergy, Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University. The gene chip dataset GSE43696 was screened and downloaded from the high-throughput Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, and the gene chip data preprocessing was completed using package "affy" in R and "rma" algorithm in turn. Use the the "edgeR" and "limma" packages to screen out the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between normal controls, mild to moderate asthma patients and severe asthma patients, and then use the "clusterProfiler" package to perform GO enrichment analysis and KEGG pathway enrichment analysis of DEGs, finally use the STRING website to construct a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network of DEGs to further screen key genes. Using the R language "WGCNA" package, the weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was performed on the dataset GSE43696, and the modules significantly related to the severity of asthma were screened out, then the hub genes were obtained by intersecting the WGCNA analysis results with the DEGs screened by PPI. Datasets GSE43696 and GSE63142 were used to verify the expression of hub genes, and the diagnostic value was evaluated according to the ROC curve, then the potential function of hub genes in dataset GSE43696 was further clarified by gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA). The results showed that a total of 251 DEGs were screened, including 39 in the normal group and mild to moderate asthma group, 178 in the normal group and severe asthma group, and 34 in the mild to moderate asthma group and severe asthma group, mainly involved in biological processes such as response to toxic substance, response to oxidative stress, extracellular structure organization, extracellular matrix organization. Two modules significantly correlated with asthma severity were screened out (red module, P=7e-6, r=0.43; pink module, P=5e-8, r=-0.51), and finally six hub genes were obtained, including B3GNT6, CEACAM5, CCK, ERBB2, CSH1 and DPPA5. The comparison of gene expression levels and ROC curve analysis of datasets GSE43696 and GSE63142 further verified the six hub genes, which may associated with o-glycan biosynthesis, alpha linolenic acid metabolism, linoleic acid metabolism, pentose and glucoronate interconversions. In conclusion, through a variety of bioinformatics analysis methods, this study identified six hub genes significantly related to the severity of asthma, which potentially provided a new direction for the prediction and targeted therapy of asthma.

Abstract
Human lice have always been a major public health concern due to their vector capacity for louse-borne infectious diseases, like trench fever, louse-borne relapsing fever, and epidemic fever, which are caused by Bartonella quintana, Borrelia recurrentis, and Rickettsia prowazekii, respectively. Those diseases are currently re-emerging in the regions of poor hygiene, social poverty, or wars with life-threatening consequences. These louse-borne diseases have also caused outbreaks among populations in jails and refugee camps. In addition, antibodies and DNAs to those pathogens have been steadily detected in homeless populations. Importantly, more bacterial pathogens have been detected in human lice, and some have been transmitted by human lice in laboratories. Here, we provide a comprehensive review and update on louse-borne infectious diseases/bacterial pathogens.

Abstract
Evidence for recombination between mitochondrial (mt) minichromosomes has been reported in sucking lice, but it is still not clear how frequent mt minichromosomal recombination occurs. We sequenced the mt genomes of the cattle louse Linognathus vituli and the goat louse L. africanus. Both Linognathus species have 10 mt minichromosomes, and seven of them have the same gene content and gene arrangement. Comparison of mt karyotypes revealed numerous inter-minichromosomal recombination events in the evolution of Linognathus species. Minichromosome merger, gene duplication and gene translocation occurred in the lineage leading to Linognathus lice. After the divergence of L. vituli and L. africanus, duplication, degeneration, deletion and translocation of genes also occurred independently in each species. Most of the recombination events in the Linognathus species occurred upstream of either cox3 or nad2, indicating these two locations were hotspots for inter-minichromosomal recombination. Our results provide an important perspective on mt genome evolution in metazoans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Various approaches using epidural analgesia have been employed for relieving labor pain and promoting spontaneous delivery. We aimed to evaluate the effect of nalbuphine and ropivacaine versus fentanyl and ropivacaine on the duration of delivery in parturients. METHODS Clinical data of 160 full-term primiparous women who received either nalbuphine or fentanyl in combination with ropivacaine infusion for epidural labor analgesia in our hospital from December 2020 to May 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. The participants were divided into two groups based on anesthesia methods: nalbuphine group (NR group, n = 78) received 0.2 mg/mL nalbuphine combined with 0.1% ropivacaine hydrochloride for patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) and fentanyl group (FR group, n = 82) received 2 ug/mL fentanyl citrate and 0.1% ropivacaine hydrochloride for PCEA. Both groups received an epidural blockade for labor analgesia at lumbar 2-3 interspace. The duration of the first, second, and third stages of labor, the onset of analgesia, and time before delivery (T0), 15 min of analgesia (T1), 30 min of analgesia (T2), full opening of the uterine opening (T3),exerts force during childbirth(T4), heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), blood saturation (SpO2), visual analogue pain scale (VAS) score, Ramsay sedation score, and modified Bromage score, and 5 min were recorded at 2 h postpartum (T5). The neonatal Apgar score, neonatal behavioral neurological assessment (NBNA) score, maternal nausea, vomiting, and itchy skin were recorded. RESULTS Compared with the FR group, the first stage of labor duration (p < 0.05) and total duration of labor (p < 0.05) were shortened and the onset of analgesia (p < 0.05) was increased in the NR group. NR group had lower incidence of urinary retention than FR group (p < 0.05). The maternal and neonatal investigational parameters and scores had no significant difference between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS Nalbuphine combined with ropivacaine in epidural block labor has a faster onset of analgesia and has a lower incidence of urinary retention than fentanyl combined with ropivacaine, and nalbuphine shortens the duration of the first and total stages of labor. Both nalbuphine and fentanyl can reduce pain during labor, have little effect on maternal hemodynamics, and have no significant effect on neonatal Apgar or NBNA scores.

Abstract
Ticks are blood-sucking ectoparasites with significant medical and veterinary importance, capable of transmitting bacteria, protozoa, fungi, and viruses that cause a variety of human and animal diseases worldwide. In the present study, we sequenced the complete mitochondrial (mt) genomes of five hard tick species and analyzed features of their gene contents and genome organizations. The complete mt genomes of Haemaphysalis verticalis, H. flava, H. longicornis, Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Hyalomma asiaticum were 14855 bp, 14689 bp, 14693 bp, 14715 bp and 14722 bp in size, respectively. Their gene contents and arrangements are the same as those of most species of metastriate Ixodida, but distinct from species of genus Ixodes. Phylogenetic analyses using concatenated amino acid sequences of 13 protein-coding genes with two different computational algorithms (Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood) revealed the monophylies of the genera Rhipicephalus, Ixodes and Amblyomma, however, rejected the monophyly of the genus Haemaphysalis. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the complete mt genome of H. verticalis. These datasets provide useful mtDNA markers for further studies of the identification and classification of hard ticks.

Abstract
With the increasingly serious eutrophication of global water bodies and the strict discharge standards of tail water in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), there is an urgent technology need for efficient deep phosphorus removal from wastewater. A composite cerium-based adsorbent (Ce-Zr-Al) was synthesized by coprecipitation method for the adsorption of low concentration phosphorus in water. The performance of the Ce-Zr-Al composite adsorbent was explored, and the mechanism was also revealed through the analyses including SEM, BET, XPS, and FT-IR. The results showed that the composite adsorbent had excellent phosphorus removal performance. The phosphorus removal rate reached up to 92.6%, and the phosphorus concentration in effluent was less than 0.074 mg/L. The phosphate adsorption capacity of saturation was 73.51 mg/g. The adsorption process of phosphate was in accordance with pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. In addition, the composite adsorbent had a high zero potential point (pH PZC= 8) and a wide range of pH application. After the repeated desorption for 10 times in NaOH solution, the composite adsorbent still maintained good adsorbability (adsorption rate > 94%). The ligand exchange and electrostatic adsorption played the main role for the phosphorus removal from water using the composite adsorbent.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinical and imaging features of optic nerve tumors that require differential diagnosis from optic neuritis. Methods: A retrospective case series study was conducted. Clinical data of patients diagnosed with optic nerve tumors from January 2017 to December 2021 at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine were collected. A total of 29 patients (39 eyes) with clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings similar to optic neuritis or optic neuropathy were included. There were 15 cases of optic nerve sheath meningioma (ONSM) (17 eyes), 4 cases of optic nerve glioma (ONG) (5 eyes), and 10 cases of infiltrative optic nerve lesions (ION) (17 eyes). All patients underwent best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), anterior and posterior segment examinations, visual field examination, and orbital or cranial MRI examination. Patient data were observed and analyzed, treatment and follow-up information were recorded, and clinical and imaging features were summarized and compared with those of optic neuritis or optic neuropathy. Results: Among the 29 patients with optic nerve tumors, 10 were male and 19 were female, with an average age of (43.3±13.8) years and a range of 11 to 72 years. The follow-up time was 6.8 (2.0, 11.0) months, with a range of 1 to 33 months. Sixteen patients (21 eyes) with optic nerve tumors were initially misdiagnosed as having acute optic neuritis and showed poor response to steroid treatment. Of these, 9 cases (11 eyes) were ONSM, 4 cases (6 eyes) were ION, and 3 cases (4 eyes) were ONG. The diagnostic delay time was 7.1 (1.5, 12.0) months, with a range of 1 to 24 months. The main clinical symptoms of all affected eyes were acute vision loss in 23 eyes, slow vision loss in 5 eyes, transient blackouts in 4 eyes, and no obvious visual symptoms in 7 eyes. The median BCVA of all affected eyes was 0.1, ranging from light perception to 1.0. Fundus examination results showed optic disc edema in 34 eyes and normal optic disc in 5 eyes among the 39 eyes with optic nerve tumors. A total of 27 patients (33 eyes) completed visual field examinations, which revealed an enlarged physiological blind spot in 11 eyes, a concentric or tubular visual field contraction in 8 eyes, a diffuse decrease in light sensitivity in 7 eyes, an arcuate scotoma in 4 eyes, and a normal visual field in 3 eyes. All affected eyes completed orbital or cranial MRI examinations, which showed mild optic nerve thickening in 22 eyes, significant thickening in 6 eyes with distortion, and no significant thickening in 6 eyes. Contrast-enhanced T1-weighted imaging (T1WI) MRI showed optic nerve parenchymal thickening in 5 eyes, all of which were ONG, and 2 of them had optic nerve parenchymal enhancement. Optic nerve sheath thickening and enhancement without optic nerve parenchymal thickening or enhancement were observed in 28 eyes, including 17 eyes of ION and 11 eyes of ONSM. There were 6 eyes with no obvious optic nerve thickening, which were all ONSM, showing mild or significant thickening and enhancement of the optic nerve sheath without optic nerve parenchymal thickening or enhancement. Conclusions: Optic nerve tumors can present with ophthalmic clinical features similar to optic neuritis, such as optic disc edema, and demonstrate MRI findings that resemble those of optic neuritis. Therefore, differentiation between the two is crucial, based on differences in their natural course and response to steroid therapy.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinical characteristics of Aspergillus fumigatus(A.f)-sensitized asthma and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA), which provides a foundation for the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of A.f-sensitized asthma and ABPA, as well as the prevention of ABPA. Methods: This was a single-center retrospective case-control study. Collected the clinical data of patients who visited the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University from December 2018 to May 2022.A total of 122 patients were included, including 64 males (52.5%) and 58 females (47.5%).The age range was 3 to 89 years.The median age was 44 years.The average age was 41.8 years.The patients were divided into three groups (48 ABPA, 35 A.f-sensitized asthma and 39 HDM-sensitized asthma).Analyzed the differences and correlations among clinical indicators in the three groups, and evaluated the risk factors for the development of ABPA in A.f-sensitized asthma.For statistical analysis, metrological data was tested by t-test or Wilcoxon Mann-Whitney. Classification variables by chi-square test or Fisher's exact test. Pearson correlation analysis for normal distribution data.Spearman correlation analysis for skewed distribution data. Influencing factor analysis was performed using multivariate logistic regression analysis. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was made, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) was calculated, and the sensitivity and specificity of the model were evaluated. Results: Compared with patients with A.f-sensitized asthma, the fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) [75.00(52.00, 87.00)ppb vs. 40.00(32.00, 52.00)ppb], eosinophils% (EO%) [10.60(6.75, 13.05) vs. 4.10(1.20, 7.30)], eosinophils (EO) [1.50(1.07, 2.20)×109/L vs. 0.33(0.10, 0.54)×109/L], A.f-specific Immunoglobulin E (sIgE) [10.24(4.09, 22.88)KU/L vs. 1.13(0.53, 3.72) KU/L], and sIgE to total IgE(tIgE) ratio (sIgE/tIgE) [0.0049(0.0027, 0.0100) vs. 0.0008(0.0004, 0.0017)] were higher in ABPA patients, the differences were statistically significant (P<0.001). In all patients, tIgE was positively correlated with EO% (r=0.206, P<0.05) and EO (r=0.302, P<0.001). sIgE/tIgE was negatively correlated with one-second rate (FEV1/FVC%) (r=-0.256, P<0.01). The percentage of predicted forced vital capacity [FVC(%)] was negatively correlated with FeNO (r=-0.184, P<0.05).In the ABPA group, the percentage of predicted peak expiratory flow [PEF(%)] was negatively correlated with FeNO (r=-0.295, P<0.05). In the HDM-sensitized asthma group, FeNO was positively correlated with EO% (r=0.49, P<0.01) and EO (r=0.548, P<0.001).The results of logistic regression analysis showed that FeNO and EO were the influencing factors for the development of ABPA in A.f-sensitized asthma. ROC curve analysis results showed that A.f-sIgE (cut-off, 4.108; AUC=0.749;95%CI, 0.632-0.867), sIgE/tIgE(cut-off, 0.0026;AUC=0.749;95%CI, 0.631-0.868), FeNO(cut-off, 55.5;AUC=0.794; 95%CI, 0.687-0.900), EO% (cut-off, 8.70;AUC=0.806;95%CI, 0.709-0.903) and EO (cut-off, 0.815;AUC=0.865;95%CI, 0.779-0.950) had differential diagnostic value in A.f-sensitized asthma and ABPA.The combination of FeNO, EO and EO% had good diagnostic efficiency in differentiating A.f-sensitized asthma from ABPA, with a sensitivity of 91.4% and a specificity of 84.4%. Conclusion: Compared with patients with A.f-sensitized asthma, patients with ABPA have more severe eosinophil inflammation. The higher the FeNO and EO, the more likely A.f-sensitized asthma will develop into ABPA.sIgE/tIgE may have differential diagnostic value in A.f-sensitized asthma and ABPA.The combination of FeNO, EO and EO% has good diagnostic efficacy in differentiating A.f-sensitized asthma from ABPA.

Abstract
Culex mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) can transmit a variety of arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses), causing human and animal diseases. Cx. vishnui, Cx. pseudovishnui, and Cx. tritaeniorhynchus are three representative species in Culex vishnui subgroup, which are widely distributed in southeast Asia, and they have been proved as the main vectors transmitting Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) that could cause human infectious mosquito-borne disease across Asia. However, the epidemiology, biology, and even molecular information of those mosquitos remain poorly understood, and only the mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Cx. tritaeniorhynchus has been reported in these species. In the present study, we sequenced and annotated the complete mitogenome sequence of Cx. vishnui which was 15,587 bp in length, comprising 37 genes. Comparisons of nucleotide and amino acid sequences between Cx. vishnui and Cx. tritaeniorhynchus revealed that most genes within Culex vishnui subgroup were conserved, except atp8, nad1, atp6, and nad6, with differences of 0.4 (rrnS) - 15.1% (tRNAs) and 0 (nad4L) - 9.4% (atp8), respectively, interestingly suggesting the genes nad4L and rrnS were the most conserved but atp8 gene was the least. The results based on nucleotide diversity also supported a relatively uniform distribution of the intraspecific differences in Cx. vishnui and Cx. tritaeniorhynchus with only one highly pronounced peak of divergence centered at the control region. Phylogenetic analyses using concatenated amino acid sequences of 13 protein-coding genes supported the previous taxonomic classification of the family Culicidae and the monophyly of tribes Aedini, Culicini, Mansoniini, and Sabethini. The present study revealed detailed information on the subgroup Culex vishnui, reanalyzed the relationships within the family Culicidae, provided better markers to identify and distinguish Culex species, and offered more markers for studying the molecular epidemiology, population genetics, and molecular phylogenetics of Cx. vishnui.

Abstract
Fleas are important ectoparasites and vectors associated with a wide range of pathogenic diseases, posing threats to public health concerns, especially cat fleas that spread worldwide. Understanding the microbial components is essential due to cat fleas are capable of transmitting pathogens to humans, causing diseases like plague and murine typhus. In the present study, metagenomic next-generation sequencing was applied to obtain the complete microbiota and related functions in the gut of Ctenocephalides felis. A total of 1,870 species was taxonomically recognized including 1,407 bacteria, 365 eukaryotes, 69 viruses, and 29 archaea. Proteobacteria was the dominant phylum among the six samples. Pathogens Rickettsia felis, Acinetobacter baumannii, Coxiella burnetii, and Anaplasma phagocytophilum were taxonomically identified and had high abundances in all samples. The resistance gene MexD was predominant in microbial communities of all cat fleas. We also performed epidemiological surveys of pathogens R. felis, A. baumannii, C. burnetii, and A. phagocytophilum among 165 cat fleas collected from seven provinces in China, while only the DNAs of R. felis (38/165, 23.03%) and C. burnetii (2/165, 1.21%) were obtained. The data provide new insight and understanding of flea intestinal microbiota and provided novel information for preventing and controlling fleas and their transmitted diseases.

Abstract
Activated sludge process was a low-cost alternative method compared to the conventional physicochemical process for the treatment of heavy metal-containing wastewater. In the present study, the removal efficiency of Pb2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+ from wastewater by a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) activated sludge system was investigated, and the mechanism was revealed by static adsorption experiment of activated sludge. The results showed that the activated sludge in the SBR system was effective in removing Pb2+ and Cu2+ from wastewater at 10 mg·L-1 initial concentration, with a removal efficiency of 83.1 ~ 90.0% for Pb2+ and 74.3 ~ 80.6% for Cu2+, respectively. However, the removal efficiency for Ni2+ was only 0 ~ 6.2%. Static adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption capacity of activated sludge for three heavy metals was shown as Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Ni2+. When the initial concentration was 20 mg·L-1, the equilibrium adsorption capacity of activated sludge for Pb2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+ was 18.35 mg·g-1, 17.06 mg·g-1, and 8.37 mg·g-1, respectively. The main adsorption mechanisms for Pb2+ and Cu2+ were ligand exchange, electrostatic adsorption, and surface organic complexation processes, but Ni2+ removal mechanism mainly included electrostatic adsorption and surface organic complexation processes, showing that Ni2+ removal was inhibited in the presence of Pb2+ and Cu2+. The physicochemical properties and microbial diversity of activated sludge were greatly affected by the heavy metals in the SBR system, and genus Rhodobacter was found to be dominant bacteria enabling resistance to heavy metal ions.

Abstract
Monolayer biphenylene is a new two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope, which has been experimentally synthesized and theoretically predicted to show superconductivity. In this work, we investigate functionalized biphenylene with the adsorption of Li. The superconducting critical temperature (Tc) can be pushed from 0.59 K up to 3.91 K after Li adsorption. Our calculations confirm that the adsorption pushes the peak showing a high electronic density of states closer to the Fermi level, which usually leads to a larger Tc. Furthermore, the application of biaxial tensile strain can soften phonons and further enhance the Tc up to 15.86 K in Li-deposited biphenylene. Interestingly, a pair of type-II Dirac cones below the Fermi level has been observed, expanding the range of Dirac materials. It suggests that monolayer biphenylene deposited with Li may be a material with potential applications and improves the understanding of Dirac-type superconductors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The family Capillariidae is a group of thread-like nematodes of 27 genera and over 300 species that infect a great variety of hosts including humans. Among these, some taxa such as the genus Aonchotheca have remained controversial regarding their systematic status for decades. The aim of the current study was to verify Aonchotheca's systemic status and to further determine whether it is a distinct genus from Capillaria using molecular and phylogenetic analyses. RESULTS We sequenced the mitochondrial (mt) genome and nuclear small subunit (18S) rRNA gene of Aonchotheca putorii, a representative species of the genus, and investigated its systematic status in Trichinellida using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference. The differences in amino acid sequences of 13 protein-coding genes were 12.69-67.35% among Aonchotheca, Capillaria, Eucoleus, and Pseudocapillaria with cox1 (12.69%) and atp8 (67.35%) as the most and the least conserved gene, respectively, and the difference of two mt rRNAs was 18.61-34.15%. Phylogenetic analyses of the complete mt genome and 18S rRNAs unequivocally showed that Aonchotheca was a distinct genus from Capillaria. CONCLUSIONS Large difference exists among Aonchotheca, Capillaria, Eucoleus, and Pseudocapillarias. Aonchotheca putorii is the first species in the genus Aonchotheca for which a complete mitogenome has been sequenced. These data are useful for phylogenetics, systematics and the evolution of Capillariidae.

Abstract
Lice are six-legged, wingless, insect parasites of mammals and birds, and include two main functional groups: blood-sucking lice and chewing lice. However, it is still not clear whether the Chinese red panda Ailurus styani is infested with the parasitic louse. In the present study, we describe a new genus and a species of chewing louse, Pancola ailurus (Phthiraptera: Trichodectidae) based on morphological and molecular datasets. The morphological features showed that Pancola is closer to Paratrichodectes. The genetic divergence of cox1 and 12S rRNA among the Pancola ailurus n. sp. and other Trichodectidae lice was 29.7 - 34.6% and 38.9 - 43.6%, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses based on the available mitochondrial gene sequences showed that P. ailurus n. sp. is more closely related to Trichodectes canis and Geomydoecus aurei than to Felicola subrostratus and together nested within the family Trichodectidae. This study is the first record of parasitic lice from the endangered Chinese red panda A. styani and highlights the importance of integrating morphological and molecular datasets for the identification and discrimination of new louse species.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing evidence has shown that non-coding RNA (ncRNA) molecules play fundamental roles in cells, and many are stable in body fluids as circulating RNAs. Study on these ncRNAs will provide insights into toxoplasmosis pathophysiology and/or help reveal diagnostic biomarkers. METHODS We performed a high-throughput RNA-Seq study to comprehensively profile the microRNAs (miRNAs) and PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) in rabbit serum and urine after infection with Toxoplasma gondii oocysts during the whole infection process. RESULTS Total RNA extracted from serum and urine samples of acutely infected [8 days post-infection (DPI)], chronically infected (70 DPI) and uninfected rabbits were subjected to genome-wide small RNA sequencing. We identified 2089 miRNAs and 2224 novel piRNAs from the rabbit sera associated with T. gondii infection. Meanwhile, a total of 518 miRNAs and 4182 novel piRNAs were identified in the rabbit urine associated with T. gondii infection. Of these identified small ncRNAs, 1178 and 1317 serum miRNAs and 311 and 294 urine miRNAs were identified as differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs in the acute and chronic stages of infections, respectively. A total of 1748 and 1814 serum piRNAs and 597 and 708 urine piRNAs were found in the acute and chronic infection stages, respectively. Of these dysregulated ncRNAs, a total of 88 common DE miRNAs and 120 DE novel piRNAs were found in both serum and urine samples of infected rabbits. CONCLUSIONS These findings provide valuable data for revealing the physiology of herbivore toxoplasmosis caused by oocyst infection. Circulating ncRNAs identified in this study are potential novel diagnostic biomarkers for the detection/diagnosis of toxoplasmosis in herbivorous animals.

Abstract
Ixodes hunanensis n. sp. (Acari: Ixodidae), is identified based on the morphological characteristics and molecular biological analyses of males and females ex hog badger, Arctonyx collaris Cuvier (Carnivora: Mustelidae) from China. Adults of this new species are similar to those of other species of the subgenus Pholeoixodes Schulze, 1942, from which they can be distinguished by the shape of basis capituli, development of cornua, size of porose areas, shape, and size of spurs on coxae and phylogenetic analyses of the cox1 and 16S rRNA sequences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Haemaphysalis flava is a hematophagous ectoparasite that acquires the nutrition needed for development and reproduction by sucking blood and digesting the blood meal. During blood-sucking and blood-meal digestion, the prevention of blood coagulation is important for this tick. Previous studies have shown that heat shock cognate 70 (HSC70) protein has certain anticoagulant activities, but its immunogenicity remains unclear. Also, whether the mutation of individual bases of the TKD-like peptide of HSC70 through the overlap extension method can change its anticoagulant activities and immunogenicity remains to be investigated. METHODS The gene encoding the HSC70 protein was cloned from a complementary DNA library synthesized from H. flava. The coding gene of the TKD-like peptide of HSC70 was mutated into a TKD peptide coding gene (HSC70TKD) using the overlap extension method. Escherichia coli prokaryotic expression plasmids were constructed to obtain the recombinant proteins of HSC70 (rHSC70) and HSC70TKD (rHSC70TKD). The purified rHSC70 and rHSC70TKD were evaluated at different concentrations for anticoagulant activities using four in vitro clotting assays. Emulsifying recombinant proteins with complete and incomplete Freund's adjuvants were subcutaneously immunized in Sprague Dawley rats. The serum antibody titers and serum concentrations of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) and interleukin-4 (IL-4) were detected using an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to assess the immunogenicity of rHSC70 and rHSC70TKD. RESULTS The open reading frame of HSC70 was successfully amplified and found to have a length of 1958 bp. The gene encoding the TKD-like peptide of HSC70 was artificially mutated, with the 1373-position adenine (A) of the original sequence mutated into guanine (G), the 1385-position cytosine (C) mutated into G and the 1386-position G mutated into C. rHSC70 and rHSC70TKD that fused with His-tag were obtained using the expression plasmids pET-28a-HSC70 and pET-28a-HSC70TKD, respectively. rHSC70 and rHSC70TKD prolonged the thrombin time (TT) and reduced the fibrinogen (FIB) content in the plasma, but did not affect the prothrombin time (PT) or activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) when compared to the negative control. Interestingly, the ability of rHSC70TKD to prolong the TT and reduce the FIB content in the plasma was better than that of rHSC70. The specific antibody titers of both rHSC70 and rHSC70TKD in rat serum reached 1:124,000 14 days after the third immunization. The serum concentration of IFN-γ in the rHSC70TKD group was higher than that in the rHSC70 group. The rHSC70 group has the highest serum concentration of IL-4, and the serum concentration of IL-4 in the rHSC70TKD group was higher than that in the negative group. CONCLUSIONS rHSC70 and rHSC70TKD exhibited anticoagulant activities by prolonging the TT and reducing the FIB content in vitro. rHSC70TKD had better anticoagulant activities than rHSC70. Both rHSC70 and rHSC70TKD had good immunogenicity and induced humoral and cellular immunity.

Abstract
Sucking lice are obligate ectoparasites of mammalian hosts, causing serious public health problems and economic losses worldwide. It is well known that sucking lice have fragmented mitochondrial (mt) genomes, but many remain undetermined. To better understand patterns of mt genome fragmentation in the sucking lice, we sequenced the mt genome of the buffalo louse Haematopinus tuberculatus using next-generation sequencing (NGS). The mt genome of H. tuberculatus has ten circular minichromosomes containing a total of 37 genes. Each minichromosome is 2.9-5.0 kb long and carries one to eight genes plus one large non-coding region. The number of mt minichromosomes of H. tuberculatus (ten) is different from those of congeneric species (horse louse H. asini, domestic pig louse H. suis and wild pig louse H. apri) and other sucking lice. Two events (gene translocation and merger of mt minichromosome) are observed in Haematopinus. Compared to other studies, our phylogeny generated from mt genome datasets showed a different topology, suggesting that inclusion of data other than mt genomes would be required to resolve phylogeny of sucking lice. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a ten mt minichromosomes genome in sucking lice, which opens a new outlook into unexplored mt genome fragmentation patterns in sucking lice.

Abstract
Plagiorchis elegans (Trematoda: Digenea) is mainly parasitic in the intestines of vertebrate animals, including humans, causing irreversible pathological damage and herd-spherical influences. However, little information is available about its molecular epidemiology, population genetics, and phylogeny. In the present study, we sequenced, assembled, and annotated the complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of P. elegans. Combining with the available mitochondrial data of subclass Digenea, phylogenetic analysis was performed based on Bayesian inference (BI). The results showed that the complete length of P. elegans is 13,862 bp, including 12 PCGs, 2 ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), and one non-coding gene (NCR). There was an obvious A + T content from 61.0% to 71.3% and the values of the Ka/Ks ratio ranged from 0.119 (cox1) to 1.053 (nad6). In the BI analysis, different from previous studies, phylogenetic analysis showed genus Glypthelmins was paraphyletic rather than monophyletic and had a closer relationship with Plagiorchis and Orientocreadium. Additionally, the BI tree also presented that the genus Echinostoma was monophyletic. Our results provided molecular data in the family Plagiorchiidae proposing new insight within Xiphidiata and Echinostomata.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the clinical phenotype and detect the pathogenic gene in a Chinese pedigree with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease(ADPKD). Methods: The proband of this study was hospitalized in Dongguan City People's Hospital on October 10, 2017, due to "left maxillary apical cyst". Clinical phenotypes were noted, imaging examinations and determination of biochemical indicators were carried out for the clinical diagnosis of the proband. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral venous blood. Whole-exome genotyping of the proband was performed with the next generation sequencing technology, and the candidate mutation site of the patient and his family members was verified by PCR and Sanger sequencing technology. The mutation site was further screened in 150 unrelated healthy Chinese controls. Mutation frequency within human populations and bioinformatics analysis were predicted with softwares including ExAC, dbSNP, HGMD, 1000 genomes, ClinVar, PKDB, Mutation Taster and PhyloP. Results: The proband, a 46-year-old male, was diagnosed with hypertension, positive urine occult blood and elevated blood creatinine. B-ultrasound and CT examinations showed that he had bilateral polycystic kidney with left kidney stones and polycystic liver. The gene analysis showed that the c.11017-10C>A heterozygous splice mutation in PKD1 gene was identified in the proband, his second younger brother, younger sister, daughter and niece, but absent in 150 healthy controls. Bioinformatics analysis showed it has been reported in the dbSNP, ClinVar, HGMD, PKDB and Mutation Taster databases. Some databases predicted it has a harmful function for probably leading to production of a truncated polycystin1(PC1) protein. Conclusion: c.11017-10C>A underlies the Chinese ADPKD pedigree and expands mutation spectrum of PKD1.

Abstract
Background Fleas are the most economically significant blood-feeding ectoparasites worldwide. Ctenocephalides felis and Pulex irritans can parasitize various animals closely related to humans and are of high veterinary significance. Methods In this study, 82 samples were collected from 7 provinces of China. Through studying the nuclear genes ITS1 and EF-1α and two different mitochondrial genes cox1 and cox2, the population genetics and genetic variation of C. felis and P. irritans in China were further investigated. Results The intraspecies differences between C. felis and P. irritans ranged from 0 to 3.9%. The interspecific variance in the EF-1α, cox1, and cox2 sequences was 8.2–18.3%, while the ITS1 sequence was 50.1–52.2%. High genetic diversity was observed in both C. felis and P. irritans, and the nucleotide diversity of cox1 was higher than that of cox2. Moderate gene flow was detected in the C. felis and P. irritans populations. Both species possessed many haplotypes, but the haplotype distribution was uneven. Fu's Fs and Tajima's D tests showed that C. felis and P. irritans experienced a bottleneck effect in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Henan province. Evolutionary analysis suggested that C. felis may have two geographical lineages in China, while no multiple lineages of P.irritans were found. Conclusions Using sequence comparison and the construction of phylogenetic trees, we found a moderate amount of gene flow in the C. felis and P. irritans populations. Both species possessed many haplotypes, but the distribution of haplotypes varied among the provinces. Fu’s Fs and Tajima’s D tests indicated that both species had experienced a bottleneck effect in Guangxi and Henan provinces. Evolutionary analysis suggested that C. felis may have two geographical lineages in China, while no multiple lineages of P.irritans were found. Abstract
Background Fleas (Insecta: Siphonaptera) are obligatory hematophagous ectoparasites of humans and animals and serve as vectors of many disease-causing agents. Despite past and current research efforts on fleas due to their medical and veterinary importance, correct identification and robust phylogenetic analysis of these ectoparasites have often proved challenging. Methods We decoded the complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of the human flea Pulex irritans and nearly complete mt genome of the dog flea Ctenocephalides canis, and subsequently used this information to reconstruct the phylogeny of fleas among Endopterygota insects. Results The complete mt genome of P. irritans was 20,337 bp, whereas the clearly sequenced coding region of the C. canis mt genome was 15,609 bp. Both mt genomes were found to contain 37 genes, including 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes and two ribosomal RNA genes. The coding region of the C. canis mt genome was only 93.5% identical to that of the cat flea C. felis, unequivocally confirming that they are distinct species. Our phylogenomic analyses of the mt genomes showed a sister relationship between the order Siphonaptera and orders Diptera + Mecoptera + Megaloptera + Neuroptera and positively support the hypothesis that the fleas in the order Siphonaptera are monophyletic. Conclusions Our results demonstrate that the mt genomes of P. irritans and C. canis are different. The phylogenetic tree shows that fleas are monophyletic and strongly support an order-level objective. These mt genomes provide novel molecular markers for studying the taxonomy and phylogeny of fleas in the future. Abstract
Hydatigera taeniaeformis is one of the most common intestinal tapeworms that has a worldwide distribution. In this study, we sequenced the complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of H. taeniaeformis from the leopard cat (designated HTLC) and compared it with those of H. taeniaeformis from the cat in China (designated HTCC) and Germany (designated HTCG). The complete mt genome sequence of HTLC is 13,814 bp in size, which is 167 bp longer than that of HTCC and is 74 bp longer than that of HTCG. Across the entire mt genome (except for the two non-coding regions), the sequence difference was 3.3% between HTLC and HTCC, 12.0% between HTLC and HTCG, and 12.1% between HTCC and HTCG. The difference across both nucleotide and amino acid sequences of the 12 protein-coding genes was 4.1 and 2.3% between the HTLC and HTCC, 13.3 and 10.0% between the HTLC and HTCG, and 13.8 and 10.6% between the HTCC and HTCG, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on concatenated amino acid sequences of 12 protein-coding genes showed the separation of H. taeniaeformis from different hosts and geographical regions into two distinct clades. Our analysis showed that the cat tapeworm H. taeniaeformis represents a species complex. The novel mt genomic datasets provide useful markers for further studies of the taxonomy and systematics of cat tapeworm H. taeniaeformis.

Abstract
Objective: To study the different factors affecting platelet production post transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) isolated from different sources in order to explore novel options for treating platelet depletion following HSCs transplantation. Methods: HSCs and their downstream derivatives including myeloid and lymphoid cells (i.e., collective of mononuclear cells (MNCs)), were isolated from E14.5 fetal liver (FL) and bone marrow (BM) of 8-week-old mice by Ficoll separation technique. These cells were subsequently transplanted into the tibia bone marrow cavity of recipient mice post lethal myeloablative treatment in order to construct the FL-MNCs and BM-MNCs transplantation mouse model. Routine blood indices were examined in these recipient mice. The chimeric rate of donor cells in recipient peripheral blood cells were determined by flow cytometry. Different groups of cells involved in platelet reconstruction were analyzed. CD41+megakaryocytes were sorted from fetal liver or bone marrow using magnetic beads, which were then induced to differentiate into platelets in an in vitro assay. Quantitative RT-PCR was used to detect the expression of platelet-related genes in CD41+megakaryocytes from the two sources. Results: Both the FL-MNCs and the BM-MNCs transplantation groups resumed normal hematopoiesis at the 4th week after transplantation, and the blood cells of the recipient mice were largely replaced by the donor cells. Compared with the mice transplanted with BM-MNCs, the platelet level of mice transplanted with FL-MNCs recovered faster and were maintained at a higher level. At week 4, the PLT level of the FL-MNCs group was (1.45±0.37)×1012/L, and of the BM-MNCs group was (1.22±0.24)×1012/L, P<0.05. The FL-MNCs contain a higher proportion of hematopoietic stem cells (Lin-Sca-1+c-Kit+)(7.60%±1.40%) compared to the BM-MNCs (1.10%±0.46%), P<0.01; the proportion of the megakaryocyte progenitor cells (Lin-Sca-1-c-Kit+CD41+CD150+) and mature megakaryocyte cells (CD41+CD42b+), also differ significantly between the FL-MNCs (3.05%±0.22%, 1.60%±0.06%, respectively) and the BM-MNCs (0.15%±0.02%, 0.87%±0.11%, respectively) groups, both P<0.01. In vitro functional studies showed that FL-MNCs-CD41+megakaryocytes could produce proplatelet-like cells more quickly after induction, with proplatelet-like cells formation on day 3 and significant platelet-like particle formation on day 5, in contrast to bone marrow-derived BM-MNCs-CD41+megakaryocytes that failed to form proplatelet-like cell on day 5. In addition, FL-MNCs-CD41+cells expressed higher levels of platelet-related genes, Mpl (3.25-fold), Fog1 (3-fold), and Gata1 (1.5-fold) (P<0.05). Conclusion: Compared with the BM-MNCs group, the FL-MNCs transplantation group appears to have a more efficient platelet implantation effect in the HSCs transplantation recipient in vivo, as well as a higher platelet differentiation rate in vitro. This might be related to a higher proportion of megakaryocytes and higher expression levels of genes such as Mpl, Fog1, and Gata1 that could be important for platelet formation in FL-MNCs-CD41+cells. Further exploration of the specific functions of these genes and the characteristics of the different proportions of the donor cells will provide valuable clues for the future treatment of platelets reconstitution after HSCs transplantation clinically.

Abstract
Background Human pediculosis is caused by hematophagous lice, which are transmitted between individuals via direct and/or indirect contact. Despite the public health importance of louse infestation, information concerning the global burden of pediculosis and the epidemiological landscape of louse-borne diseases is limited. The aim of this review was to summarize the biology, epidemiology, diagnosis, and control of lice infestation in humans. We also discussed the latest advances in molecular taxonomy and molecular genetics of lice. Methods We searched five electronic bibliographic databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, CNKI, VIP Chinese Journal Database, and Wanfang Data) and followed a standard approach for conducting scoping reviews to identify studies on various aspects of human lice. Relevant information reported in the identified studies were collated, categorized, and summarized. Results A total of 282 studies were eligible for the final review. Human pediculosis remains a public health issue affecting millions of people worldwide. Emerging evidence suggests that head lice and body lice should be considered conspecific, with different genotypes and ecotypes. Phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial (mt) cytb gene sequences identified six distinct clades of lice worldwide. In addition to the direct effect on human health, lice can serve as vectors of disease-causing pathogens. The use of insecticides plays a crucial role in the treatment and prevention of louse infestation. Genome sequencing has advanced our knowledge of the genetic structure and evolutionary biology of human lice. Conclusions Human pediculosis is a public health problem affecting millions of people worldwide, particularly in developing countries. More progress can be made if emphasis is placed on the use of emerging omics technologies to elucidate the mechanisms that underpin the physiological, ecological, and evolutionary aspects of lice. Abstract
Overall understanding of microbial community structure in activated sludge (AS) system at regional level is of great significance for operation regulation of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In this study, 110 AS samples from 21 cities in different Chinese regions were analyzed based on high-throughput 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequencing to explore effects of different regions on microbial community structure. Results showed that the regions with different characteristics (south and north, coastal and inland, high GDP and low GDP) had great impact on AS bacterial community in China. Core bacterial communities (101 OTUs) in south China were more abundant than those in north China (49 OTUs), and many core species in south China were associated with nutrient removal. Coastal WWTPs possessed unique bacterial communities due to the influence of marine bacteria. Phyla Chloroflexi and Acidobacteria were observed to be main biomarkers in coastal WWTPs. Compared with low GDP regions, more diverse microbial community and effective wastewater treatment were discovered in high GDP regions, and environmental factor analysis suggested that they were mainly correlated with high capacity and influent TP in the WWTPs. β nearest taxon index (βNTI) analysis showed that microbial community assembly in the analyzed AS samples was dominated by deterministic factors (70.67%) and influent quality was observed to be main factor.

Abstract
The cattle tick (Rhipicephalus microplus) is one of the most common ticks parasitizing livestock, causing diseases as the vector of pathogens. In this study, we amplified and sequenced the complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of R. microplus from Hainan province of China and compared it with that of R. microplus from Guizhou province of China. The mt genome sequence of R. microplus from Hainan isolate was 15,163 bp in size, which was significantly longer (299 bp) than R. microplus from Guizhou isolate. Nucleotide sequence difference in the entire mt genome except for non-coding region was 5.6% between R. microplus from Hainan and Guizhou isolates. For the 13 protein-coding genes, this comparison revealed the sequence differences of nucleotide (3.8-10.1%) and amino acid (1.2-17.3%). Phylogenetic analysis of R. microplus indicated that R. microplus from Hainan isolate clustered in clade A, and R. microplus from Guizhou isolate clustered in clade B. Taken together, the findings support the recent proposal the existence of two lineages (clades A and B) of R. microplus in China.

Abstract
The wastewater treatment industry in urban China generally faces certain common problems. To provide a comprehensive analysis on common problems of the wastewater treatment industry, survey data from 467 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and field investigation reports of 38 WWTPs were analyzed. The research results showed that, the common problems of the wastewater treatment industry are mainly concentrated in WWTPs and the drainage system. The length of per capita drainage networks is insufficient, only 0.85 m; approximately 63.17% WWTPs have hydraulic load rates (HLRs) are greater than 80%, and the ratio of water quality between the design value and actual value is approximately 0.7; and there is still a considerable gap in construction of wastewater treatment facilities compared to those in developed countries. These are still major common problems perplexing the wastewater treatment industry in urban China. In this study, the common problems that hinder improving the operation efficiency of WWTPs were investigated, the causes of the discrepancy were analyzed, and three countermeasures, such as refinement design, optimization facilities and reasonable process control were jointly explored to solve them. This study may provide valuable insights and methods for the wastewater treatment industry to effectively address the discrepancy between the design and actual operation of WWTPs.

Abstract
Although many studies have already described the physiological effects of bee products, such as honey, propolis, pollen, and royal jelly, on livestock farming, the health benefits of the honeycomb are still not fully understood. The problem of drug residues and bacterial resistance caused by the abuse of antibiotics is becoming increasingly serious. For this reason, a safe, green substitute has to be sought. We conducted a comparative study of honeycomb extract (HE) and an antibiotic on growth performance, carcass traits, immunity, antioxidant function and intestinal microorganisms of yellow bantam broilers. A total of four hundred eighty 21-day-old female yellow bantam broilers were randomly divided into 5 groups of 6 replicates of 16 birds each. The 5 groups were as follows, with birds receiving a basal diet supplemented with 150 ppm (mg/kg) of chlortetracycline (CTE), a basal diet without HE (control group), and a basal diet with 0.1%, 0.15%, or 0.2% HE for 60 days. The results showed that HE addition significantly increased average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain (ADG), decrease feed gain ratio (F/G) from 21 to 80 and 51 to 80 days of age compared to the control group, with all 3 HE addition groups having statistically identical values to the antibiotic group. HE implementation dramatically increased spleen index, serum immunoglobulin A (IgA), immunoglobulin M (IgM,), glutathione peroxide (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), and total cecum bacteria and Lactobacillus compared to the control group, numerically at the same level as, or even better than, the antibiotic group. HE and CTE both markly reduced serum malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration compared to the control group, with higher concentrations of HE reducing the effect more dramatically than antibiotics. Both HE and CTE significantly raised dressed yield compared to the control group. In summary, HE, as a potential antibiotic alternative, improved growth performance, carcass traits, immune function, serum antioxidant capacity and intestinal microorganisms in yellow bantam broilers. According to the cubic regression analyses, the recommended supplemental dose of HE was calculated to be 0.15 to 0.17% for female yellow bantam broilers between 21 and 80 d of age.

Abstract
A large amount of heavy metal-contained wastewater (HMW) was discharged during Chinese industry development, which has caused many environmental problems. This study reviewed discharge, management and treatment of HMW in China through collecting and analyzing data from China's official statistical yearbook, standards, technical specifications, government reports, case reports, and research paper. Results showed that industry wastewater discharged by an amount of about 221.6 × 108 t (in 2012), where emission of heavy metals including Pb, Hg, Cd, Cr(VI), T-Cr was around 388.4 t (in 2012). Heavy metal emission with wastewater in east China and central south China was observed to be graver than that in other areas. However, control of heavy metals in Pb and Cd in northwest China was more difficult compared with other areas. In terms of management, China's government has issued many wastewater discharge standards, strict management policies for controlling HMW discharge in recent years, resulting in reduced HMW discharge. In addition, main HMW treatment technology in China was chemical precipitation, and other technologies such as membrane separation, adsorption, ion exchange, electrochemical and biological methods were also occasionally applied. In the future, chemical industries will be concentrated in northwest China, therefore control of HMW discharge should be paid much more attention in those areas. In addition, more effective and environment-friendly heavy metal removal and regeneration technologies should be developed, such as biomaterials adsorbent.

Abstract
Background Ticks, which are ectoparasites of animals, may carry multiple pathogens. The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus is an important bovine parasite in China. However, the midgut microbiome of R. microplus from China has not been characterized via metagenomic methods. Methods Rhipicephalus microplus were collected from cattle in the city of Changsha in Hunan province, China. The DNA of the midgut contents was extracted from fully engorged adult female R. microplus. A DNA library was constructed and sequenced using an Illumina HiSeq sequencing platform. SOAPdenovo software was used to assemble and analyze the clean data. The latent class analysis algorithm applied to system classification by MEGAN software was used to annotate the information on the species’ sequences. DIAMOND software was used to compare unigenes with the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database, and functional annotation was carried out based on the results of the comparison. Results The dominant phyla in the five samples were Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria. Streptococcus, Mycobacterium, Anaplasma, Enterococcus, Shigella, Lactobacillus, Brachyspira, Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, Bacillus, and Lactococcus were the dominant genera in the five samples. The endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia was also detected in all of the samples. Mycobacterium malmesburyense, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Enterococcus faecium, Shigella sonnei, Enterococcus faecalis, Lactobacillus casei, Brachyspira hampsonii, Pseudomonas syringae, Enterobacter cloacae, and Lactococcus garvieae were the dominant species in the five samples. In addition to these bacterial species, we also detected some eukaryotes, such as Rhizophagus irregularis, Enterospora canceri, Smittium culicis, Zancudomyces culisetae, Trachipleistophora hominis, and viruses such as orf virus, human endogenous retrovirus type W, enzootic nasal tumor virus of goats, bovine retrovirus CH15, and galidia endogenous retrovirus in all of the samples at the species level. The results of the annotated KEGG pathway predictions for the gene functions of the midgut microflora of R. microplus indicated genes involved in lipid and amino acid metabolism, infectious diseases (e.g., Streptococcuspneumonia infection, human granulocytic anaplasmosis, Shigellasonnei infection, Salmonella enterica infection, and pathogenic Escherichia coli infection), and cancer. Conclusions Our study revealed that the midgut microbiome of R. microplus is not only composed of a large number of bacteria, but that a portion also comprises eukaryotes and viruses. The data presented here enhance our understanding of this tick’s midgut microbiome and provide fundamental information for the control of ticks and tick-borne diseases. Graphical Abstract ![]()

Abstract
Carbon source production from primary sludge in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) via anaerobic fermentation process has been paid more attention. However, slow hydrolysis rate and low yield of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) limited its application. This study aimed at improving the anaerobic fermentation efficiency of primary sludge by alkali regulation (NaOH, Na2CO3 and Ca(OH)2), and revealing the mechanism. Results showed that three kinds of alkalis allowed enhancing hydrolysis and acidification, and reducing methane production in the anaerobic fermentation process of primary sludge. The Na2CO3 regulation contributed to highest yield and productivity of SCFAs, reaching 1626 mg COD/L and 0.189 g COD/g VSS at 4th day, respectively. Microbial community structure analysis indicated that the relative abundance of fermentative microbial community was improved in the alkali regulation system, where methanogenic archaea was effectively inhibited. The continuous flow experiment further verified that the Na2CO3 regulation could steadily increase yield of SCFAs in the anaerobic fermentation process of primary sludge, and the yield was also the highest among three kinds of alkali regulation.

Abstract
Argas persicus is an ectoparasite of poultry. The bacterial community structure and the pathogenic bacteria associated with different developmental stages of A. persicus have implications for control. Argas persicus were collected from chickens in the city of Jiuquan in Gansu, China. Bacterial DNA was extracted from the midgut contents of blood engorged larvae, nymphs and adult females. The V3-V4 hypervariable regions of 16S rRNA genes were sequenced using the IonS5™XL platform. Identification of Rickettsia spp. and detection of Coxiella burnetii were performed using PCR on target genes. The bacterial diversity within larvae was the highest and the bacterial diversity within nymphs was greater than that of adults. At different classification levels, seven bacterial phyla were common phyla, 27 genera were common genera, and 18 species were common species in the three samples. At the phylum level, Proteobacteria showed a marked predominance in all samples. Rickettsia, Stenotrophomonas, Spiroplasma, and Coxiella were the dominant bacteria at the genus level. The Rickettsia species in A. persicus was identified as Rickettsia hoogstraalii and the Coxiella species was identified as a Coxiella-like endosymbiont. Additionally, some bacterial species such as Pseudomonas geniculata, Sphingomonas koreensis, and Acinetobacter haemolyticus were reported here for the first time in A. persicus.
