Abstract
Objective: To investigate the value of multiple parameters derived from intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted imaging (IVIM-DWI) and three-dimensional arterial spin labeling (3D-ASL) in Ki-67 labeling index (Ki-67 LI) and grading of human brain gliomas. Methods: From December 2015 to May 2018, 45 patients of gliomas confirmed by surgical pathology in Li Huili Hospital, Ningbo Medical Center were divided into low-grade group (20 cases of WHO grade Ⅱ) and high-grade group (12 cases of WHO grade Ⅲ, 13 cases of WHO grade Ⅳ), and the Ki-67 LI of glioma was obtained by immunohistochemistry. All patients, 24 males and 21 females, aged 25-83 years, mean(53±12)years, underwent conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), IVIM-DWI and 3D-ASL before operation, then measured the true water diffusion coefficient (D), microcirculation perfusion coefficient (D(*)), perfusion fraction (f) and cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the tumor solid area and the contralateral normal white matter area. Those parameters and the Ki-67 LI were compared between the low-and high-grade groups with Mann-Whitney U test. Spearman's correlation was used to analyze the correlation between the quantitative parameters and Ki-67 LI. The ROC curve was used to assess the diagnostic efficacy of parameters in the grading assessment of brain gliomas. Results: The D(0.791×10(-3)mm(2)/s) and f (0.261) of the high-grade group were lower than those of the low-grade group, whereas D(*) (4.153×10(-3) mm(2)/s), CBF(102.027 ml·min(-1)·100 g(-1)) and Ki-67 LI (0.25) were higher (P<0.05). There was a moderate negative correlation between D, f and Ki-67 LI(r=-0.513,-0.457, all P<0.05). There was no significant correlation between D(*) and Ki-67 LI (P=0.571). The area under the curve (AUC) for identifying high-and low-grade gliomas by D, D(*), f and CBF values was 0.965, 0.745, 0.842, and 0.830 respectively (all P<0.05). Conclusion: D and f can be used for quantitative prediction of Ki-67 LI. IVIM-DWI and 3D-ASL are helpful in the grading assessment of gliomas, and the diagnostic efficiency of D is the highest.

Abstract
This study verified the value of a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) technique assisting in ultrasonography (US) diagnosis of 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose (18FDG)-avid thyroid incidentalomas on positron emission tomography. A total of 82 18FDG-avid thyroid incidentalomas from 74 non-thyroid cancer patients were retrospectively analyzed with respect to US and CAD parameters (anechoic area, hyper-echoic foci, hypo-echogenicity, heterogeneity, margin, taller-than-wide shape, eccentric area) and were compared with 38 other non-18FDG-avid nodules found in the same patient group. Fine-needle aspiration cytology or surgical intervention pathology was performed for diagnosis. No significant differences in nodule size or CAD parameters were found in 18FDG-avid nodules reported as benign, indeterminate or malignant. Significantly more taller-than-wide nodules were thyroid originating than metastatic (0.30 vs. 0.16, p < 0.05). Nevertheless, combined CAD and positron emission tomography/computed tomography scores and a discrimination point of 4 resulted in a sensitivity of 75% and a specificity of 80% in prediction of incidentaloma benignity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A histological, tumour-free surgical margin does not guarantee recurrence-free survival in patients with cancer. This study investigated the association between microsatellite alteration in tumour-free surgical margins and local recurrence in patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma. METHODS Patients with histologically confirmed oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma were enrolled in this prospective study. Cancerous specimens, corresponding surgical margins and peripheral blood were obtained. Microsatellite alteration was investigated using six dinucleotide microsatellite markers. All samples were amplified by PCR, followed by automatic fragment analysis. RESULTS Microsatellite alteration was identified in 100 specimens (69·0 per cent) from 145 patients. Among them, 85 specimens carried loss of heterozygosity, whereas 55 had microsatellite instability (MSI). Patients with MSI at the surgical margin had a higher risk of local recurrence on multivariable analysis (odds ratio 7·17, 95 per cent c.i. 3·49 to 14·73). CONCLUSION Molecular assessment of surgical margins can help identify patients at risk of local recurrence.

Abstract
The effects of copper/zinc-loaded montmorillonite (Cu/Zn-Mt) on growth performance, mineral retention, intestinal morphology, mucosa antioxidant capacity, and cytokine contents in weaned piglets were investigated in the present study. One hundred eight piglets weaned at 21 ± 1 days of age (Duroc × Landrace× Yorkshire; average initial weight of 6.36 kg) were allotted to three treatments for 2 weeks. The three treatments were as follows: (1) control group: basal diet; (2) Cu/Zn-Mt group: basal diet + 39 mg/kg Cu and 75 mg/kg Zn as Cu/Zn-Mt; (3) Cu + Zn + Mt group: basal diet + mixture of CuSO4, ZnSO4, and Mt (equal amount of Cu, Zn, and Mt to the Cu/Zn-Mt group). Each treatment had six pens of six piglets. The results showed that as compared with the control group and the Cu + Zn + Mt group, Cu/Zn-Mt supplementation increased (P < 0.05) the average daily gain and the gain/feed ratio; Cu/Zn-Mt supplementation increased (P < 0.05) the Cu and Zn concentrations in serum, jejunum, and ileum mucosa, villus height, the ratio of villus height to crypt depth, and the activities of SOD, GSH-Px, and IL-10 levels, and decreased the malondialdehyde concentrations in the jejunum and ileum, and intestinal IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α levels. Moreover, supplementation with the mixture of CuSO4, ZnSO4, and Mt had no effect on the growth performance, but increased the mucosa Cu and Zn concentrations, intestinal morphology, antioxidant capacity, and immune function in the duodenum, while it had no effect on the above indexes in the jejunum and ileum. The results indicated that Mt could be used as a controlled carrier for Cu and Zn, which made Cu/Zn-Mt have better biological activities in the intestine than the mixture of Cu, Zn, and Mt.

Abstract
In the present study, we investigated the influence of weaning on antioxidant status, intestinal integrity, mitochondrial function, and the mitophagy level in piglets (weaned at 21 d) during the 1 wk after weaning. The redox status was measured by antioxidant enzymes activities, related genes expression, and malondialdehyde (MDA) content in jejunum. The intestinal barrier function was assessed by the Ussing chamber and expression of tight junction proteins in the jejunum. The function of intestine mitochondria was measured by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content and activities of mitochondria oxidative phosphorylation complexes. The levels of light chain 3-1 (LC3-I), light chain 3-II (LC3-II), PTEN-induced putative kinase 1 (PINK1), and Parkin were determined to investigate whether mitophagy is involved in the weaning process. The results showed that, as compared with the preweaning phase (d 0), weaning suppressed (P < 0.05) the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) on d 3 and d 7 postweaning, decreased (P < 0.05) the expression of copper and zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD), manganese-containing superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) on d 3 postweaning, declined (P < 0.05) the level of glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX-1) and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX-4) on d 3 and d 7 postweaning, and increased (P < 0.05) MDA content in jejunum on d 3 and d 7 postweaning. The jejunal transepithelial electrical resistance and levels of occludin, claudin-1, and zonula occludens-1 on d 3 and d 7 postweaning were reduced (P < 0.05), and paracellular flux of fluorescein isothiocyanatedextran (4 kDa) on d 3 and d 7 postweaning was increased (P < 0.05). Weaning induced mitochondrial dysfunction, as demonstrated by decreased (P < 0.05) content of mtDNA on d 3 and d 7 postweaning and declined (P < 0.05) activities of mitochondria complexes (I, II, III, IV) in jejunum on d 1, d 3, and d 7 postweaning. Weaning led to an increased (P < 0.05) expression level of mitophagy-related proteins, PINK1 and Parkin, in the intestinal mitochondria, as well as an enhancement (P < 0.05) of the ratio of LC3-II to LC3-I content in the jejunal mucosa on d 1, d 3, and d 7 postweaning. These results suggest that weaning disrupted intestinal oxidative balance, and this imbalance may impair intestinal barrier and mitochondrial function and trigger mitophagy in piglets.

Abstract
Objective: Applying the proteomics technology to identify proteins differentially in serums of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients and normal population. Methods: The study included serum samples from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis group and normal controlled group with 30 cases of each, from the Second Hospital of Shandong University, between October 2014 and October 2015. Proteins differentially expressed in serums were quantified by the isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantization coupled with two-dimensional liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry technology. The proteins were analyzed in terms of molecular function, cell location and biological processes for showing the key protein molecules which were related to the development of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Results: A total of 490 kinds of proteins (with confidence coefficient above 95%) were identified by mass spectrometry and 25 kinds of differentially expressed proteins were found. Compared with the control group, we found 4 types of up-regulated proteins and 21 down-regulated ones in the serum of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients. Data from the Gene ontology analysis showed that most differentially expressed proteins were in the extracellular region (92%) while pathway enrichment analysis showed that most proteins were involved in the complement and coagulation cascade pathway. Conclusion: Proteins related to the complement system coagulation cascade pathway, and the proteins function need to be further studied.

Abstract
Liquid isopropanol, n-butanol, and n-decane are combustible organic compounds that are frequently used in theoretical and experimental researches on fuel combustion. In this work, the temperature-dependent optical constants of liquid isopropanol, n-butanol, and n-decane in the region 500-5500 cm-1 at ambient pressure are measured using the combined ellipsometry-transmission method. In the combined method, the optical constants are first measured by a modified ellipsometry method, and then the absorption indices for weak absorption regions are obtained by the transmission method using the refractive indices measured by the modified ellipsometry method. The refractive indices of liquid isopropanol, n-butanol, and n-decane are within the range from 1.3 to 1.45 in the studied wavelength and temperature region. The absorption indices of these liquids range from 10-5 to 10-1. In the temperature range studied, the refractive indices decrease with increasing temperature in an approximately linear manner, but the effects of the temperature on the absorption indices are much smaller. The characteristic wavenumbers of the main absorption peaks are consistent with the vibrational frequencies of major functional groups.

Abstract
The optical constants of five highly transparent substrates (polycrystalline BaF2, CaF2, MgF2, ZnSe, and ZnS) were experimentally determined based on a combined technique using both the double optical pathlength transmission method and the ellipsometry method within temperature range 20°C-350°C in the ultraviolet-infrared region (0.2-20 μm). The results show that the refractive index spectra of polycrystalline BaF2, CaF2, and MgF2 are similar, but differ from that of polycrystalline ZnSe and ZnS. The thermo-optic coefficient of these highly transparent substrates increases with increasing temperature. The absorption indices show a significant temperature-dependent behavior, which increases with increasing temperature from 20°C to 350°C over the transparent region. For the sake of application, the fitted formulas of the refractive index of the five highly transparent substrates as a function of wavelength and temperature are presented.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We developed a new minimally invasive method for intracranial pressure monitoring (ICPMI). The objective of this project is to verify the similarities between the ICPMI and the invasive method (ICPInv), for different components of the intracranial pressure signal-namely, the mean value (trend) as well as its pulsatile component. MATERIALS AND METHODS A 9 kg anesthetized pig was used for simultaneous ICP monitoring with both methods. ICP was increased by performing ten infusions of 6 ml 0.9% saline into the spinal subarachnoid space, using a catheter implanted in the lumbar region. For correlation analysis, the signals were decomposed into two components-trend and pulsatile signals. Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated between ICPInv and ICPMI. RESULTS During the infusions, the correlation between the pulsatile components of the signals was above 0.5 for most of the time. The signal trends showed a good agreement (correlation above 0.5) for most of the time during infusions. CONCLUSIONS The ICPMI signal trends showed a good linear agreement with the signal obtained invasively. Based on the waveform analysis of the pulsatile component of ICP, our results indicate the possibility of using the minimally invasive method for assessing the neuroclinical state of the patient.

Abstract
The management of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in pregnancy is a unique issue. Telbivudine (LdT) is recommended to block HBV mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) in the third trimester. However, the safety of LdT treatment during the entire pregnancy for the long-term growth of infants is unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and long-term safety of LdT for the entire pregnancy period. This retrospective cohort study included 40 pregnant women and 43 children from 2011 to 2017. The antiviral effects and maternal abnormalities were evaluated. In addition, adverse events regarding infants at delivery and HBV vaccination outcomes were recorded. The status of physical development in the children during follow-up was also evaluated. Among pregnant women, the rates of HBV DNA flare were 5.00% during pregnancy and 7.50% postpartum, and the HBeAg seroconversion rates were 7.50% during pregnancy and 7.50% postpartum. No severe maternal abnormalities were observed. Regarding the infants, no one was positive for HBsAg, and only one infant was negative for anti-HBs in children over 7 months of age. Furthermore, no birth defects or severe adverse events were observed at delivery, and 97.67% normal height and 93.02% normal weight in children were observed on follow-up until 5 years of age. In conclusion, LdT use for the entire pregnancy is both effective for treating pregnant women and blocking HBV MTCT. Moreover, LdT is safe for women and infants. Most importantly, the long-term follow-up indicated that LdT is safe and does not affect the growth of children.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted virus and an important etiologic factor in head and neck cancers. HIV-infected individuals are at increased risk of developing oropharyngeal cancers (OPC) compared with the general population. HPV-positive OPC are also increasingly a significant cause of morbidity and mortality for HIV-infected individuals in the era of effective combination antiretroviral therapy. The epidemiology and natural history of oral HPV infection have not been well established, but it appears that oral HPV infection is less common than anal infection, and more common among HIV-infected persons than the general population. Prevention of OPC is therefore increasingly important in HIV-infected individuals. Although not demonstrated in randomized controlled trials, HPV vaccination may prevent oral HPV infection as well. The focus of organized HPV cancer prevention programs should include prophylactic HPV vaccination to reduce the burden of high-risk HPV and low-risk HPV types who have not yet been exposed.

Abstract
The optical constants of sodium chloride (NaCl), potassium chloride (KCl), magnesium chloride (MgCl2), calcium chloride (CaCl2) and sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) solutions at weight fractions ranging from 0 to 16.6667% are measured by the combined ellipsometry-transmission method in the spectral range 0.3-1.0 μm. In the combined method, a modified ellipsometry method is used to measure the refractive indices of liquids, and then the transmission method is conducted to obtain the extinction coefficients using the refractive indices obtained by the ellipsometry method. The experimental refractive indices of these binary solutions are utilized to obtain a mole-fraction weighted mixing rule, which relates the refractive index of multi-component mixed-salt solutions to the wavelength and concentration of each component. The effects of wavelength and concentration are taken into account by empirical expressions of the Lorentz-Lorenz formulized molar refraction. A mole-fraction weighted linear combined mixing rule is proposed to study the wavelength and concentration-dependent extinction coefficients of mixed-salt solutions. The optical constants of NaCl-KCl and NaCl-Na2SO4 ternary solutions, NaCl-KCl-CaCl2 quaternary solutions, and NaCl-KCl-MgCl2-CaCl2-Na2SO4 multi-component solutions are measured to verify the mixing rules. The results show that the optical constants calculated based on the mixing rules are in good agreement with experimental data, which demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed mixing rules. As the experimental analysis indicates, both the refractive indices and the extinction coefficients of the saline solutions increase with solute concentrations in the spectral range 0.3-1.0 μm.

Abstract
The optical constants of vegetable oils and biodiesels are the basic input parameters in the study of the thermal radiation transfer and monitoring the productivity of vegetable oils converting to biodiesels. In this work, a combined ellipsometry-transmission method is presented to obtain the optical constants of palm oil and palm oil biodiesel between 20°C and 150°C in the spectral range 600-4100 cm-1 and to study the temperature effect on the optical constants. In the combined method, a modified ellipsometry method is used to measure the optical constants of palm oil and palm oil biodiesel for the whole researched wave bands. For the weak absorption regions in which the ellipsometry method cannot give precise absorption indices, the transmission method is conducted to get the absorption indices using the refractive indices obtained by the proposed ellipsometry method. Deionized water and methanol are taken as examples to verify the combined ellipsometry-transmission method. It is shown that the combined method can overcome the deficiencies of the traditional ellipsometry and transmission method, which can be used for the measurements of both strong and weak absorption wave bands. The experimental analyses indicate that temperature exerts a noticeable influence on the infrared optical constants of palm oil and palm oil biodiesel. With the increase of temperature, the refractive indices at certain wavenumbers decrease nearly linearly, and the amplitudes of dominant absorption peaks show a decreasing trend. The absorption peaks located around 3550 cm-1 show blueshift trends as temperature increases. Comparing these two kinds of oils, palm oil presents larger values in refractive indices and dominant absorption peaks.

Abstract
Objective: This study was to describe the clinical characteristics of Anti-leucine-rich glioma inactivated 1 protein(LGI1) antibody associated limbic encephalitis. Methods: Clinical data including clinical features, laboratory and radiological findings, treatment and prognosis of the 9 patients were analyzed. Results: In all 9 cases, 6 cases experienced epileptic seizure, 5 cases had psychosis, 7 cases presented with memory impairment, 4 cases showed faciobrachial dystonic seizure, 2 had refractory hyponatremia. One case presented with typically acute Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS). Anti-LGI1 antibody was detected in 6 cases in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples and 9 in serum samples. Seven cases out of 9 had brain imaging abnormalities. All 9 cases found no evidence of tumors. Eight cases were given immune therapy. During a 1-16 months follow-up, 1 case had complete recovery, 5cases had various degree of sequelae , among whom 4 had memory disturbance and 1 case had changed personality. 2cases were lost to follow-up. Conclusions: Limbic encephalitis is the most common manifestation of anti-LGI1 antibody associated encephalitis. Faciobrachial dystonic seizure (FBDS) is a specific symptom which favors an early diagnosis. Tumor is uncommon to see. The disease has a relatively favorable prognosis while impaired memory can be seen as a common sequelae.

Abstract
Inflammation of cartilage is a primary symptom for knee-joint osteoarthritis. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are known to play an important role in the articular cartilage destruction related to osteoarthritis. Naringenin is a plant-derived flavonoid known for its anti-inflammatory properties. We studied the effect of naringenin on the transcriptional expression, secretion and enzymatic activity of MMP-3 in vivo in the murine monosodium iodoacetate (MIA) osteoarthritis model. The assessment of pain behavior was also performed in the MIA rats. The destruction of knee-joint tissues was analyzed microscopically. Moreover, the effect of naringenin was also studied in vitro in IL-1β activated articular chondrocytes. The transcriptional expression of MMP-3, MMP-1, MMP-13, thrombospondin motifs (ADAMTS-4) and ADAMTS-5 was also studied in primary cultured chondrocytes of rats. Naringenin caused significant reduction in pain behavior and showed marked improvement in the tissue morphology of MIA rats. Moreover, a significant inhibition of MMP-3 expression in MIA rats was observed upon treatment with naringenin. In the in vitro tests, naringenin caused a significant reduction in the transcriptional expression, secretion and enzymatic activity of the studied degradative enzymes. The NF-κB pathway was also found to be inhibited upon treatment with naringenin in vitro. Overall, the study suggests that naringenin alleviated pain and regulated the production of matrix-metalloproteinases via regulation of NF-κB pathway. Thus, naringenin could be a potent therapeutic option for the treatment of osteoarthritis.

Abstract
Extinction coefficients are fundamental for analyzing radiative transport in micro/nano particle suspensions. In the traditional transmission method for measuring the extinction coefficient of particles in a cuvette, a reference system is used to compensate for the influence of the cuvette and base fluid. However, the multiple reflections and refractions between the air-glass and liquid-glass interfaces cannot be sufficiently eliminated by using the reference system, and the induced measurement error increases significantly with increasing difference in refractive index between the two neighboring media at these interfaces. In this paper, an improved transmission method is proposed to measure the extinction coefficient of micro/nano particles. The extinction coefficient of the particles is determined based on an optical model, taking into account the multiple reflection and refraction at the glass-liquid interfaces. An experimental validation was conducted for suspensions with various mean particle sizes. By considering the higher-order transmission terms, the improved transmission method generally achieved high-accuracy improvement over the traditional transmission method for extinction coefficient measurement, especially for the case with a small optical thickness of particle suspensions. This work provides an alternative and more accurate way for measuring the extinction characteristics of micro/nano particle suspensions.

Abstract
Nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries have demonstrated key technology advantages for applications in new-energy vehicles, which play an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the world's dependence on fossil fuels. However, the poor high-rate dischargeability of the negative electrode materials-hydrogen storage alloys (HSAs) limits applications of Ni-MH batteries in high-power fields due to large polarization. Here we design a hybrid electrode by integrating HSAs with a current collector of three-dimensional bicontinuous nanoporous Ni. The electrode shows enhanced high-rate dischargeability with the capacity retention rate reaching 44.6% at a discharge current density of 3000 mA g(-1), which is 2.4 times that of bare HSAs (18.8%). Such a unique hybrid architecture not only enhances charge transfer between nanoporous Ni and HSAs, but also facilitates rapid diffusion of hydrogen atoms in HSAs. The developed HSAs/nanoporous metals hybrid structures exhibit great potential to be candidates as electrodes in high-performance Ni-MH batteries towards applications in new-energy vehicles.

Abstract
β-amyloid peptide (Aβ) aggregation has been thought to be associated with the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease. Recently, we showed that L17A/F19A substitutions may increase the structural stability of wild-type and Arctic-type Aβ40 and decrease the rates of structural conversion and fibril formation. However, the underlying mechanism for the increase of structural stability as a result of the alanine substitutions remained elusive. In this study, we apply nuclear magnetic resonance and circular dichroism spectroscopies to characterize the Aβ40 structure, demonstrating that L17A/F19A substitutions can augment the α-helicity of the residues located in the α/β-discordant segment (resides 15 to 23) of both wild-type and Arctic-type Aβ40. These results provide a structural basis to link the α-helicity of the α/β-discordant segment with the conformational conversion propensity of Aβ.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are chemicals with diverse toxicities that are produced by fungi. Aflatoxin B1 is commonly found in plant food, and is generally regarded as one of the most toxic mycotoxins. In the present study, pregnant ICR mice were given p.o. daily doses of aflatoxin B1 at 0, 0.05, 0.5, 5mg/kg for 4days (from E13.5 to E16.5). Compared to the control group, time of delivery was shortened and low birth weight was induced in mice treated with 0.5 and 5mg aflatoxin B1/kg, respectively. Placental tissue isolated from pregnant mice at E17.5 showed that the mRNA expression of crh was increased in aflatoxin-treated groups. This upregulation might signify premature delivery. Further analysis indicated that Pkc proteins were activated and Bcl-2 was reduced in the placental tissue of the aflatoxin-treated groups. Reduction of the anti-apoptotic proteins, on the other hand, might affect the morphorgenesis and maintenance of the placenta.

Abstract
Spectral properties of sea foam greatly affect ocean color remote sensing and aerosol optical thickness retrieval from satellite observation. This paper presents a combined Mie theory and Monte Carlo method to investigate visible and near-infrared spectral reflectance and bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) of sea foam layers. A three-layer model of the sea foam is developed in which each layer is composed of large air bubbles coated with pure water. A pseudo-continuous model and Mie theory for coated spheres is used to determine the effective radiative properties of sea foam. The one-dimensional Cox-Munk surface roughness model is used to calculate the slope density functions of the wind-blown ocean surface. A Monte Carlo method is used to solve the radiative transfer equation. Effects of foam layer thickness, bubble size, wind speed, solar zenith angle, and wavelength on the spectral reflectance and BRDF are investigated. Comparisons between previous theoretical results and experimental data demonstrate the feasibility of our proposed method. Sea foam can significantly increase the spectral reflectance and BRDF of the sea surface. The absorption coefficient of seawater near the surface is not the only parameter that influences the spectral reflectance. Meanwhile, the effects of bubble size, foam layer thickness, and solar zenith angle also cannot be obviously neglected.

Abstract
Glioma is the most aggressive type of brain tumor. Great progress has been achieved in glioma treatment, but the protein-protein interaction networks underlining glioma are poorly understood. We identified the protein-protein interaction network for glioma based on gene expression and predicted biological pathways underlying the molecular complexes in the network. Genes involved in glioma were selected from the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) database. A literature search was performed using the Agilent Literature Search plugin, and Cytoscape was used to establish a protein-protein interaction network. The molecular complexes in the network were detected using the Clusterviz plugin, and pathway enrichment of molecular complexes was performed using DAVID online. There were 378 glioma genes in the OMIM database. The protein-protein interaction network in glioma contained 1814 nodes, 6471 edges, and 8 molecular complexes. There were 17 pathways (false discovery rate <1), which were related to cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, Toll-like receptor signaling pathway, chemokine signaling pathway, oocyte meiosis, progesterone-mediated oocyte maturation, transmembrane transport of small molecules, metabolism of amino acids, and notch signaling pathway, among others. Our results provide a bioinformatic foundation for further studies of the mechanisms of glioma.

Abstract
Mutations within the β-amyloid peptide (Aβ) sequence that cause early onset familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD) have been shown to promote Aβ aggregation. How these FAD-related mutants increase the aggregative ability of Aβ is not fully understood. Here, we characterized the effect of the Arctic variant (E22G) on the conformational stability of Aβ using various forms of spectroscopy and kinetic analyses, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The E22G mutation in the Arctic variant reduced the α-helical propensity and conformational stability of Aβ on residues 15-25. This mutation also caused an increase in both α-helix-to-β-strand conversion and fibril nucleation rates. Our results suggest that the α-helical propensity of residues 15-25 may play a determinant role in the aggregative ability of Aβ. This may provide a structural basis for understanding the molecular mechanism of Aβ aggregation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a major complication in patients with diabetes mellitus and the leading cause of non-traumatic amputation in adults. Patients with DFU are usually fragile due to chronic diabetic comorbidities; therefore, tedious debridement and intervention procedures may not be well tolerated in patients with DFU. This study aimed to identify a casual relationship between in-hospital complications and treatment for limb-threatening DFUs. METHODS From 2009 to 2011, 1130 consecutive patients who were admitted to the Diabetic Foot Care Center in Chang Gung Medical Center were surveyed. Rates of in-hospital mortality or events that lead to transfer to the intensive care unit (ICU) for various severe complications were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS Forty-seven patients (4.2%) experienced in-hospital complications (28 patients died). Major adverse cardiac events (MACE) (n=21, 44.7%) were the most common complications, followed by nosocomial infection (n=18, 38.3%). Previous myocardial infarction was a risk factor for MACE. The presentation of MACE was fulminant (eg, acute pulmonary edema, cardiogenic shock,cardiac arrest), and occurred within 10 days of admission or within 10 days following a major procedure in most cases. ST-T segment abnormality at rest was the most common presentation of electrocardiography for MACE. CONCLUSION MACE should be prevented during treatment for limb-threatening DFU in high-risk patients. Acute stress might have caused MACE during the first 10 days after admission or a major procedure.

Abstract
In China, covering developing apple (Malus × domestica) fruit with paper bags is a standard production practice. The fruit are usually covered from May to October to exclude pests and rain-dispersed pathogens and reduce pesticide residue at harvest. From 2010 to 2012, a fruit spot disease was observed on bagged fruit and caused 1 to 30% annual yield losses in most orchards in Shandong Province. Affected fruit were covered with red-brown, sunken, circular lesions 2 to 20 mm in diameter with dark violet edges often surrounded by a red halo. In many cases, the lesion cracked and pinkish mycelium was observed within the cracks. Isolations were made from bagged fruit from 12 orchards in October 2010 to 2012. Fungal isolations were made onto potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium. Two strains were consistently obtained from isolates. Strain 1 produced conidia assembled in head. Conidia were ellipsoidal to ovoid and 2.1 to 7.5 × 1.1 to 3.0 μm. Colonies were whitish with some pink and powdery on PDA. String 2 produced conidia in a long chain. Conidia were spindle-shaped with apiculate at both ends and 2.1 to 6.6 × 1.3 to 3.8 μm. Colonies were whitish at the beginning and grayish later and powdery on PDA. To further confirm the identity of the isolated fungus, the large subunit (LSU), the small subunit (SSU), and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences of ribosomal DNA, and the β-tubulin gene (β-tubulin), were amplified and sequenced with the primers V9G/LR5, NS1/NS24, ITS1/ITS4, and Bt1a/Bt1b, respectively. LSU (GenBank Accession Nos. KJ194115 and KJ194116), SSU (KJ194117 and KJ194118), ITS (KF225143 and KF225144), and β-tubulin (KF225145 and KF225146) sequences didn't have any variation between the two strains sequenced. Phylogenetic analyses of each of the examined genes indicated a high similarity (>99%) with Acremonium sclerotigenum (CBS 384.65 HQ232129). Based on the sequence data and the morphology, we identified the fungus as A. sclerotigenum (1,2). To confirm pathogenicity, a spore suspension (1 × 104 conidia per ml) was made from each of the strains isolated. Strains were subsequently inoculated on to 10 mature apple fruit by wounding them to a depth of 2 mm with an acupuncture needle. Inoculation with sterile distilled water was included as a control. Prior to inoculation, all fruit were surface-sterilized with 75% alcohol. Lesions developed on fruit inoculated with the putative pathogen 10 days after incubation in >90% humidity chamber at 25°C. The fungi that were isolated from the infected fruit were identical to the inoculated strains. No lesions developed on the control fruit. This is the first report of brown spot disease caused by A. sclerotigenum in apple and in bagged fruit production. Given that brown spot disease symptoms were usually observed in September after long periods of rain, management efforts need to focus on protecting bagged fruit before harvest. References: (1) H. Abstract
BACKGROUND AIMS Cancer is one of the greatest health challenges facing the world today with >10 million new cases of cancer every year. The self-renewal, tumor-homing ability and low immunogenicity of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) make them potential delivery candidates for suicide genes for anti-tumor therapy. However, unstable supply and short life span of adult MSCs in vitro have limited this therapeutic potential. In this study, we aimed to evaluate if immortalization of human fetal bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells by simian virus 40 (SV40-hfBMSCs) could be a stable source of MSCs for clinical application of suicide gene therapy. METHODS AND RESULTS Transduction of SV40 and herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase-IRES-green fluorescent protein (TK-GFP) did not cause significant change in the stem cell properties of hfBMSCs. The anti-tumor effect of SV40-TK-hfBMSCs in the presence of the prodrug ganciclovir was demonstrated in vitro and in nude mice bearing human prostate cancer cells, DU145 and PC3, which had been transduced with luciferase and GFP for imaging evaluation by an in vivo live imaging system (IVIS 200 imaging system; Caliper Life Sciences). Repeated injection of low doses (1 × 10(6) cells/kg) of SV40-TK-hfBMSCs was as effective as previously reported and did not cause observable harmful side effects in multiple organs. Mixed lymphocyte reaction showed that SV40-TK-hfBMSCs did not induce significant proliferation of lymphocytes isolated from healthy adults. CONCLUSIONS Taken together, immortalized hfBMSCs represent a reliable and safe source of MSCs for further clinical translational study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the diagnostic performance of the BACs-on-Beads(™) (BoBs(™)) assay for prenatal detection of chromosomal abnormalities. DESIGN Retrospective study. SETTING Tertiary prenatal diagnosis centre. POPULATION Women referred for prenatal diagnosis. METHODS We retrieved 2153 archived DNA samples collected between January 2010 and August 2011 for the BoBs(™) assay. These samples had previously been tested by quantitative fluorescence polymerase chain reaction (QF-PCR) and karyotyping. In the BoBs(™) assay a sample was defined as normal disomic when the ratio of the fluorescence intensities in a chromosome locus lay within the threshold (mean ratio ± 2SD), and as deleted or duplicated when the ratio was below the lower threshold (0.6-0.8) or above the upper threshold (1.3-1.4), respectively. The BoBs(™) results were further validated by microarray and compared in a blinded manner with the original QF-PCR and karyotyping results. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Concordance of any numerical, structural, and submicroscopic chromosomal abnormalities between the methods. RESULTS BACs-on-Beads(™) was similar to karyotyping and QF-PCR in detecting trisomy 13, trisomy 18, trisomy 21, and sex chromosomal aneuploidies, and superior to QF-PCR in detecting major structural abnormalities (53.3 versus 13.3%) and mosaicism (28.6 versus 0%) involving chromosomal abnormalities other than the common aneuploidies. BoBs(™) detected six microdeletion syndromes missed by karyotyping and QF-PCR; however, BoBs(™) missed two cases of triploidy identified by QF-PCR. Therefore, the sensitivity of BoBs(™) is 96.7% (95% CI 92.6-98.7%), and its specificity is 100% (95% CI 99.8-100%). CONCLUSIONS BACs-on-Beads(™) can replace QF-PCR for triaging in prenatal diagnosis, and gives a better diagnostic yield than current rapid aneuploidy tests.

Abstract
We report a unique approach for the inclusion of size-tunable (7-50 nm), spherical Ge quantum dots (QDs) into gate stacks of metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) diodes, through selective oxidation of SiGe layers over the buffer layer of Si3N4 deposited over the Si substrate. In this complementary MOS (CMOS)-compatible approach, we successfully realized high performance nm scale Ge-QD MOS photodetectors with high figures of merit of low dark current density (1.5 × 10(-3) mA cm(-2)), superior photo-current-to-dark current ratio (13 500), high photoresponsivity (2.2 A W(-1)), and fast response time (5 ns), which are ready for direct integration with Si CMOS electronic circuits. Most importantly, the detection wavelength of the Ge QDs is tunable from near infrared to near ultraviolet by reducing the QD size from 50 to 7 nm as well as the optimal photoresponsivity is tailored by the Ge QD size and the effective thickness of gate dielectrics.

Abstract
Modern telecommunications rely on the transmission and manipulation of optical signals. Optical amplification plays a vital part in this technology, as all components in a real telecommunications system produce some loss. The two main issues with present amplifiers, which rely on erbium ions in a glass matrix, are the difficulty in integration onto a single substrate and the need of high pump power densities to produce gain. Here we show a potential organic optical amplifier material that demonstrates population inversion when pumped from above using low-power visible light. This system is integrated into an organic light-emitting diode demonstrating that electrical pumping can be achieved. This opens the possibility of direct electrically driven optical amplifiers and optical circuits. Our results provide an alternative approach to producing low-cost integrated optics that is compatible with existing silicon photonics and a different route to an effective integrated optics technology.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are chemicals produced by fungus and many of them are toxic to humans. Zeranol is a mycotoxin used to promote growth in cattle in North America; yet such a practice draws concern about the residual compound in meat in European countries. In the present study, the toxicity of zeranol was tested in a mouse model for reproduction. Pregnant ICR mice were given p.o. daily doses of zeranol at 0, 1, 10, 100mg/kg for 4 days (from E13.5 to E16.5). Increased rates of fetal resorption at late gestation (E17.5) and preterm birth (<E18.5) were observed in mice treated with zeranol. The apparent factors causing these perinatal conditions were subsequently investigated. Perturbation of cell death or proliferation-related proteins might deter the growth and maintenance of the placentae, and the subsequent fetal resorption and preterm birth. Placental tissue isolated from pregnant mice at E17.5 showed that the expressions of Cdk2 and 4, Cyclin D1 and Bcl-xL were reduced in zeranol-treatment groups. The downregulations might signify growth or maintenance failure in the placentae. Furthermore, reduction in the signaling proteins Erk-1/2 in the placentae could trigger the decrease in the cell cycle/apoptosis proteins. In addition, relaxin is associated with preterm labor. An increase in placental Relaxin-1 expression could also contribute to early delivery in this study. Result of the current study suggested that exposure to zeranol might introduce adverse effect in pregnancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many studies support the role of bilirubin as a cytoprotector in chronic inflammatory diseases, such as stroke and atherosclerosis. AIM To investigate the relationship between serum total bilirubin levels and functional dependence in older adults. METHODS Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2002) pertaining to 2235 old adults were analysed. All participants had given a household interview, providing information of five major domains on self-reported functional status (activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, leisure and social activities, lower extremity mobility and general physical activities), had completed serum total bilirubin measurement, and a questionnaire regarding personal health. Poor performance was defined as experiencing difficulty with one or more items in a given domain. Functional dependence was defined as having three or more poor performances in the five major domains. Multiple logistic regression was performed together with quartile-based stratified odds ratio (OR) comparison and trend tests. RESULTS The OR of functional dependence for each standard deviation increment in the serum total bilirubin level was 0.56 (P = 0.002). After additional adjustment, the inverse association remained essentially unchanged. In quartile-based analysis, participants with higher quartiles of serum total bilirubin tended to have lower ORs of functional dependence. The trends of lower likelihood of functional dependence across increasing quartiles of the serum total bilirubin level were statistically significant (P < 0.05 for all trends). CONCLUSIONS Higher serum total bilirubin levels were associated with lower likelihood of functional dependence in older adults.

Abstract
High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or capillary electrophoresis (CE) is particularly suited to the separation and analysis of a wide range of biological compounds. When investigating such compounds in complex matrices (e.g., blood, tissue, urine, foods), specificity of the detection method becomes an important issue. This can be overcome by extensive purification procedures before HPLC or CE analysis, but at the cost of a lot of effort and often unknown losses during the extraction and purification procedures. Such losses can be overcome by the addition of isotopically labeled internal standards, subject to their availability. The coupling of HPLC or CE with mass spectrometry provides a very specific method of detection. Compounds are transferred as ions to the gas phase by two types of spraying technologies, electrospray ionization (ESI) and heated nebulizer-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization. Although the mass-to-charge ratios of the molecular ions can be used to provisionally identify a compound, full confirmation of structure requires collision-induced dissociation and analysis of the resulting fragment ions. Combination of specific parent ion-daughter ion pairs allows for the quantitative measurement of isoflavones in the 1-5 pmol range with coefficients of variation for duplicate samples in the range of 5-9%. CE places greater demands on the mass spectrometer than does HPLC, because it generates narrow peak widths. A mass spectrometer with a scanning quadrupole analyzer does not enable full exploitation of the power of CE; in this context, an instrument with an ESI interface and a time-of-flight analyzer is ideal.

Abstract
A novel approach to the fabrication of metal-cell-metal trilayer memory devices was demonstrated by using only two cycles of lithography and dry-etch procedures. The fabricated ultrahigh density crossbar devices can be scaled down to ≤70 nm in half-pitch without alignment issues. Depending on the different dry-etch mechanisms in transferring high and low density nanopatterns, suitable dry-etch angles and methods are studied for the transfer of high density nanopatterns. Some novel process methods have also been developed to eliminate the sidewall and other conversion obstacles for obtaining high density of uniform metallic nanopatterns. With these methods, ultrahigh density trilayer crossbar devices (~2 × 10(10) bit cm(-2)-kilobit electronic memory), which are composed of built-in practical magnetoresistive nanocells, have been achieved. This scalable process that we have developed provides the relevant industries with a cheap means to commercially fabricate three-dimensional high density metal-cell-metal nanodevices.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to further investigate the effects of agmatine on brain edema in the rats with middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) injury using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) monitoring and biochemical and histopathologic evaluation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Following surgical induction of MCAO for 90min, agmatine was injected 5min after beginning of reperfusion and again once daily for the next 3 post-operative days. The events during ischemia and reperfusion were investigated by T2-weighted images (T2WI), serial diffusion-weighted images (DWI), calculated apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images (CE-T1WI) during 3h-72h in a 1.5T Siemens MAGNETON Avanto Scanner. Lesion volumes were analyzed in a blinded and randomized manner. Triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC), Nissl, and Evans Blue stainings were performed at the corresponding sections. RESULTS Increased lesion volumes derived from T2WI, DWI, ADC, CE-T1WI, and TTC all were noted at 3h and peaked at 24h-48h after MCAO injury. TTC-derived infarct volumes were not significantly different from the T2WI, DWI-, and CE-T1WI-derived lesion volumes at the last imaging time (72h) point except for significantly smaller ADC lesions in the MCAO model (P<0.05). Volumetric calculation based on TTC-derived infarct also correlated significantly stronger to volumetric calculation based on last imaging time point derived on T2WI, DWI or CE-T1WI than ADC (P<0.05). At the last imaging time point, a significant increase in Evans Blue extravasation and a significant decrease in Nissl-positive cells numbers were noted in the vehicle-treated MCAO injured animals. The lesion volumes derived from T2WI, DWI, CE-T1WI, and Evans blue extravasation as well as the reduced numbers of Nissl-positive cells were all significantly attenuated in the agmatine-treated rats compared with the control ischemia rats (P<0.05). CONCLUSION Our results suggest that agmatine has neuroprotective effects against brain edema on a reperfusion model after transient cerebral ischemia.

Abstract
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of neurodegenerative disease. Beta-amyloid peptides (Aβ) are responsible for neuronal death both in vitro and in vivo. Previously, L17 and F19 residues were identified as playing key roles in the stabilization of the Aβ40 conformation and in the reduction of its neurotoxicity. In this study, the effects of L17A/F19A mutations on the neurotoxicity of Aβ genetic mutant Arctic-type Aβ40(E22G) were tested. The results showed that compared to Aβ40(E22G), Aβ40(L17A/F19A/E22G) reduced the rate of conformation conversion, aggregation, and cytotoxicity, suggesting that L17 and F19 are critical residues responsible for conformational changes which may trigger the neurotoxic cascade of Aβ. Aβ40(L17A/F19A/E22G) also had decreased damage due to reactive oxygen species. The results are consistent with the discordant helix hypothesis, and confirm that residues 17–25 are in the discordant helix region. Compared to Aβ40(L17A/F19A), reduction in aggregation of Aβ40(L17A/F19A/E22G) was less significantly decreased. This observation provides an explanation based on the discordant helix hypothesis that the mutation of E22 to G22 of Aβ40(E22G) alters the propensity of the discordant helix. Arctic-type Aβ40(E22G) aggregates more severely than wild-type Aβ40, with a consequential increase in toxicity.

Abstract
An enhanced dielectric permittivity of polyethylene and related polymers, while not overly sacrificing their excellent insulating properties, is highly desirable for various electrical energy storage applications. In this computational study, we use density functional theory (DFT) in combination with modified group additivity based high throughput techniques to identify promising chemical motifs that can increase the dielectric permittivity of polyethylene. We consider isolated polyethylene chains and allow the CH2 units in the backbone to be replaced by a number of Group IV halides (viz., SiF2, SiCl2, GeF2, GeCl2, SnF2, or SnCl2 units) in a systematic, progressive, and exhaustive manner. The dielectric permittivity of the chemically modified polyethylene chains is determined by employing DFT computations in combination with the effective medium theory for a limited set of compositions and configurations. The underlying chemical trends in the DFT data are first rationalized in terms of various tabulated atomic properties of the constituent atoms. Next, by parametrizing a modified group contribution expansion using the DFT data set, we are able to predict the dielectric permittivity and bandgap of nearly 30,000 systems spanning a much larger part of the configurational and compositional space. Promising motifs which lead to simultaneously large dielectric constant and band gap in the modified polyethylene chains have been identified. Our theoretical work is expected to serve as a possible motivation for future experimental efforts.

Abstract
Melamine contamination in food has resulted in sickness and deaths of human infants, pets, and farm animals in the past decade. The majority of the victims suffered from acute kidney injury, nephrolithiasis, and urolithiasis. Since then, animal studies have revealed the possible target organs of the melamine toxicity and the extent of the adverse effects of the contaminant. State-of-the-art analytical methods have been developed to achieve the "zero tolerance" aim for such economically motivated adulteration. These studies provide in-depth understanding of the melamine toxicity and promising analytical methods, which can help us safeguard our dairy food source.

Abstract
Recurrent ovarian cancer with long-term survival is uncommon and often associated with poor prognosis. We report three cases of patients with advanced ovarian cancer who have achieved long-term disease-free survival following a single prior relapse. Case 1 relapsed with a localized bulky tumor and received a complete surgical resection and chemotherapy. Case 2 had a persistent central pelvic tumor after debulking surgery and second-line chemotherapy, and yet achieved excellent control with concurrent chemoradiation to the true pelvis. Case 3 relapsed with paraaortic lymph node metastasis and probable lung metastasis (subsequently negated by positron emission tomography) and received chemotherapy alone. These three patients have since remained disease-free for 13, 12, and seven years, respectively, since their first relapse. We conclude that select patients can obtain long-term disease-free survival after the first relapse by accurate restaging and aggressive multimodality treatment.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to evaluate portal vein stenosis (PVS) in pediatric liver transplantation (PLT) using Doppler ultrasound (DUS) before and after interventional management for hemodynamic changes. MATERIALS AND METHODS From 2000 to 2010, we encountered 11 PVS cases among 180 PLT that were evaluated using DUS and computed tomography (CT) angiography (CTA); all underwent portal stenting. DUS was used to monitor portal hemodynamics. For the diagnosis of PVS, we investigated multiple parameters including stenotic size (SS), stenotic ratio (SR) (SR [%]=PRE-SS/PRE [PRE=stenotic size]), portal flow velocity ratio (VR) (VR=VS/PRE [PRE=velocity at prestenotic site; VS=peak velocity at stenotic site]), spleen size, and platelet count. RESULTS The incidence of PVS was 5.6% (11/180). The PV was 2.5 mm using DUS and 2.7 mm using CTA. The average SR was 65% fitting the criterion. Low prestenotic portal flow<12 cm/sec and high peak velocity in the stenotic segment (up to 147 cm/sec) were observed in 6 cases. The VR value was high at 7.5:1 and there was splenomegaly with thrombocytopenia. After portal vein stenting, hyperperfusion occurred might after reopening the stenosis: the flow increased to an average of 34 cm/sec and then flow decreased slowly to a stable level 2 weeks later. The size of the spleen decreased from 17 to 12 cm and the thrombocytopenia also improved with platelet counts increasing from 67×10(3) to 178×10(3)/μl at 2 months follow-up. The changes in portal flow, portal vein size, spleen size, and platelet count were significant (P<.05). CONCLUSION PVS is diagnosed using DUS by increased intrahepatic PV dilatation, peak flow at the stenotic site, discrepant VR. Early portal stenting showed a better prognosis. DUS is essential and effective for hemodynamic monitoring and management of PVS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Largehead Atractylodes Rhizome (LAR) is the most commonly used Chinese medicine to prevent early pregnancy loss due to threatened miscarriage. However, its safety profile during pregnancy is still not available. Here we aimed to identify the potential adverse effects of LAR on embryo-fetal development as well as prenatal and post-natal growth. METHODS Pregnant mice, rats and rabbits were orally administered with LAR extracts in various doses (from 1×, 2×, 3× and up to 6× clinical doses) at different gestational periods (implantation, gastrulation, organogenesis, maturation and whole gestation). Maternal effects on weight loss, implantation failure and fetal resorption and perinatal effects on developmental delay, growth restriction and congenital malformations were studied. RESULTS In mice, with early LAR exposure, a significant decrease in fetal growth parameters and a significant increase in post-implantation loss were identified. With late LAR exposure, significant increases in gestational duration as well as prenatal and post-natal mortality were found. At high clinical doses, congenital skeletal malformations were recorded. In rabbits, fetal resorption, hydrops fetalis and short ear anomaly were observed. No significant adverse effects were found in rats. CONCLUSIONS Potential reproductive toxicity of LAR in pregnant animals was identified within the clinical dose. Caution should be taken in clinical applications of LAR during pregnancy.

Abstract
Through certain mental actions, our electroencephalogram (EEG) can be regulated to operate a brain-computer interface (BCI), which translates the EEG patterns into commands that can be used to operate devices such as prostheses. This allows paralyzed persons to gain direct brain control of the paretic limb, which could open up many possibilities for rehabilitative and assistive applications. When using a BCI neuroprosthesis in stroke, one question that has surfaced is whether stroke patients are able to produce a sufficient change in EEG that can be used as a control signal to operate a prosthesis.

Abstract
Aggregated β-amyloid peptides (Aβ) are neurotoxic and responsible for neuronal death both in vitro and in vivo. From the structural point of view, Aβ self-aggregation involves a conformational change in the peptide. Here, we investigated the relationship between conformational changes and amino acid residues of Aβ(40). Urea unfolding in combination with NMR spectroscopy was applied to probe the stabilization of Aβ(40) conformation. L17 and F19 residues were found more sensitive to environmental changes than the other residues. Replacement of these two residues with alanine could stabilize the conformation of Aβ(40). Further analysis indicated that the Aβ(40)(L17A/F19A) mutant could diminish the aggregation and reduce the neurotoxicity. These results suggest that L17 and F19 are the critical residues responsible for conformational changes which may trigger neurotoxic cascade of Aβ(40).
