Abstract
Glioblastoma is one of the most malignant brain cancers in adults, and it is a fatal disease because of its untimely pathogenetic location detection, infiltrative growth, and unfavorable prognosis. Unfortunately, multimodal treatment with maximal safe resection, chemotherapy and radiation has not increased the survival rate of patients with glioblastoma. Gene- and molecular-targeted therapy is considered to be a promising anticancer strategy for glioblastoma. The identification of novel potential targets in glioblastoma is of high importance. In this study, we found that both the mRNA and protein levels of diacylglycerol kinase ζ (DGKζ) were significantly higher in glioblastoma tissues than in precancerous lesions. The silencing of DGKζ by lentivirus-delivered shRNA reduced glioblastoma cell proliferation and induced G0/G1 phase arrest. Moreover, knockdown of DGKζ expression in U251 cells markedly reduced in vitro colony formation and in vivo tumorigenic capability. Further study showed that DGKζ inhibition resulted in decreases in cyclin D1, p-AKT and p-mTOR. Moreover, the rescue or overexpression of DGKζ in glioblastoma cells demonstrated the oncogenic function of DGKζ. In conclusion, these studies suggest that the suppression of DGKζ may inhibit the tumor growth of glioblastoma cells with high DGKζ expression. Thus, DGKζ might be a potential therapeutic target in malignant glioblastoma.

Abstract
Human SLFN5 inhibits invasions of IFNα-sensitive renal clear-cell carcinoma and melanoma cells. However, whether this inhibition is confined to these IFNα-sensitive cancers is unclear. Here we show that SLFN5 expressions on both mRNA and protein levels are significantly higher in non/low-invasive cancer cell lines (breast cancer cell line MCF7, colorectal cancer cell line HCT116 and lung cancer cell line A549) than in highly-invasive cancer cell lines (fibrosarcoma cell line HT1080 and renal clear cell cancer cell line 786-0). SLFN5 knockdown in non/low-invasive cancer cell lines enhanced MT1-MMP expression and increased migration and invasion in vitro, and in vivo. Furthermore, SLFN5 overexpression in HT1080 and 786-0 inhibited MT1-MMP expression and repressed migration and invasion. MT1-MMP is instrumental in SLFN5-controlled inhibition of cancer cell migration and invasion, as shown by MT1-MMP-knockdown and -overexpression analyses. SLFN5 knockdown activated AKT/GSK-3β/β-catenin pathway by promotion AKT phosphorylation and subsequent GSK-3β phosphorylation, further β-catenin translocation into nucleus as un-phosphorylated protein at Ser33, 37 and 45 and Thr41 sites. This is the first study to report that SLFN5 inhibits cancer migration and invasiveness in several common cancer cell lines by repressing MT1-MMP expression via the AKT/GSK-3β/β-catenin signalling pathway, suggesting that SLFN5 plays wide inhibitory roles in various cancers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Liver cancer is one of the common gastrointestinal cancers. This study was designed to investigate the effect of the cytokine-induced apoptosis inhibitor 1 (CIAPIN1) on hepatocellular carcinoma cell proliferation and invasion. MATERIALS AND METHODS To establish a low and high expression of CIAPIN1 in hepatoma cell lines, pGPU6/GFP/Neo and CIAPIN1 siRNA vectors were constructed. The growth curve of liver cancer cells with a low and high expression of CIAPIN1 was measured by MTT assay and colony formation in soft. The effect of overexpression and inhibition of CIAPIN1 on the expressions of cell cycle proteins Cyclin D1, CDK2, CDK4, and Cyclin E were detected by western blot. RESULTS As compared with the low expression group, the cells in CIAPIN1 high expression group showed a significant decrease in proliferation (p < 0.05). In addition, the colony-forming ability of cells with high expression of CIAPIN1 was decreased significantly (p < 0.01). Furthermore, the expressions of Cyclin D1 CDK2, CDK4, and Cyclin E in high expression group were significantly increased (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS CIAPIN1 played an important role in the proliferation of liver cancer cells through increasing the expressions of cell cycle related proteins Cyclin D1, CDK2, CDK4, and Cyclin E.

Abstract
Gene expression analysis of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) breast cancer data set show that miR-20a is upregulated in human breast cancer, especially in triple-negative subtype. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis suggests that miR-20a expression negatively correlates with the autophagy/lysosome pathway. We report here that miR-20a inhibits the basal and nutrient starvation-induced autophagic flux and lysosomal proteolytic activity, increases intracellular reactive oxygen species levels and DNA damage response by targeting several key regulators of autophagy, including BECN1, ATG16L1 and SQSTM1. Re-introduction of exogenous BECN1, ATG16L1 or SQSTM1 reverses the inhibitory effect of miR-20a on autophagy and decreases DNA damage. A negative correlation between miR-20a and its target genes is observed in breast cancer tissues. Lower levels of BECN1, ATG16L1 and SQSTM1 are more common in triple-negative cancers than in other subtypes. High levels of miR-20a also associate with higher frequency of copy-number alterations and DNA mutations in breast cancer patients. Further studies in a xenograft mouse model show that miR-20a promotes tumor initiation and tumor growth. Collectively, these findings suggest that miR-20a-mediated autophagy defect might be a new mechanism underlying the oncogenic function of miRNA during breast tumorigenesis.

Abstract
There are little data on the timing of initiating lamivudine therapy for preventing transmission of hepatitis B in highly viremic mothers. Between May 2008 and January 2015, we retrospectively enrolled mothers with HBV DNA >6 log10 copies/mL who received lamivudine during pregnancy, and we compared them to untreated mothers. The primary measurement was the vertical transmission rate. The secondary outcomes were the mothers' and infants' safety. Among 249 consecutive mothers enrolled, 66 and 94 received lamivudine during the second and third trimesters, respectively, and 89 were untreated. At delivery, maternal mean HBV DNA levels were significantly lower in mothers who received lamivudine (4.45 log10; vs 7.16 log10 copies/mL; P<.001). Lamivudine treatment was well tolerated. However, early treatment during the second trimester did not significantly increase the percentage of mothers achieving HBV DNA levels of <6 log10 copies/mL compared to those treated during the third trimester (98.5% vs 94.7%; P=.40). At the age of 28 weeks, the vertical transmission rates were significantly lower in the lamivudine-treated mothers vs in the untreated mothers (0% [0/160] vs 5.62% [5/89]; P<.001), but the rates were similar when comparing the two subgroups treated with lamivudine (0% [0/66] vs 0% [0/94], P>.05). The birth defect rates and mothers' and infants' adverse events were similar among the groups. Lamivudine treatment initiated in the second or third trimester for mothers with HBV DNA levels below 9 log10 copies/mL was equally safe and effective in preventing vertical transmission. Thus, lamivudine should be deferred until the third trimester to minimize foetal exposure and drug resistance.

Abstract
PURPOSE In China, most quality assessments (QAs) of the high-contrast resolution of medical computed tomography (CT) equipment is performed by subjective evaluation, which is simple but dependent on observer expertise. The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy and degree of dispersion of evaluation results from observers with different expertise and to develop an objective, easily understandable new approach to minimize the error caused by the subjective nature of observer evaluation. The accuracy and reproducibility of this new approach was validated and compared using both subjective and objective evaluation methods. METHODS This new objective evaluation method of high-contrast resolution was based on measurements of CT phantom images. The intensity profile of the aluminum line pairs' (LPs') images was extracted and quantified following the Rayleigh criterion. The interpolation method was employed to improve the consistency of the middle profile lines of each LP group for application of the Rayleigh criterion. With the introduction of a normalized margin, the accuracy of the results increased to the decimal level. Five junior observers and three QA professionals evaluated the high-contrast resolution of three different CT scanners using the subjective method, modulation transfer function (MTF) method, and the new objective method, and the results were compared statistically. RESULTS The experimental standard deviations ranged from 0.4 LP/cm to 0.55 LP/cm for subjective visual inspection. The uncertainty of the expert group's results was much lower than that of the volunteer group. The experimental standard deviations of the MTF evaluation, according to both the standard deviation (SD) and point spread function (PSF) methods, were within the intervals of (0.04-0.06) LP/cm and (0.08-0.16) LP/cm, whereas that of the proposed objective evaluation method was approximately 0.02 LP/cm. The experimental data indicated that the results of the new objective evaluation were in accordance with those of the expert group's subjective evaluation and the MTF evaluation. CONCLUSIONS In this study, the subjective evaluation results from experienced observers showed relatively less uncertainty and more accuracy than those from inexperienced observers. Furthermore, a new objective evaluation approach that is easily understood, accurate, and reproducible was developed in this study. Results acquired using this new method were comparable with those of expert groups' subjective evaluation and MTF evaluation. Specialized QA software that integrates the steps implemented in the new method is being developed to enhance the convenience of the approach and assist observers in obtaining accurate and replicable assessment results.

Abstract
Acinetobacter baumannii resistance to carbapenem antibiotics is a serious clinical challenge. As a newly developed technology, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) show some excellent characteristics compared to older treatments, and are a candidate for combating A. baumannii infection. However, its mechanism of action remains unclear. In this study, we combined AgNPs with antibiotics to treat carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii (aba1604). Our results showed that single AgNPs completely inhibited A. baumannii growth at 2.5 μg/mL. AgNP treatment also showed synergistic effects with the antibiotics polymixin B and rifampicin, and an additive effect with tigecyline. In vivo, we found that AgNPs-antibiotic combinations led to better survival ratios in A. baumannii-infected mouse peritonitis models than that by single drug treatment. Finally, we employed different antisense RNA-targeted Escherichia coli strains to elucidate the synergistic mechanism involved in bacterial responses to AgNPs and antibiotics.

Abstract
Cancer cells predominantly metabolize glucose by glycolysis to produce energy in order to meet their metabolic requirement, a phenomenon known as Warburg effect. Although Warburg effect is considered a peculiarity critical for survival and proliferation of cancer cells, the regulatory mechanisms behind this phenomenon remain incompletely understood. We report here that eukaryotic elongation factor-2 kinase (eEF-2K), a negative regulator of protein synthesis, has a critical role in promoting glycolysis in cancer cells. We showed that deficiency in eEF-2K significantly reduced the uptake of glucose and decreased the productions of lactate and adenosine triphosphate in tumor cells and in the Ras-transformed mouse embryonic fibroblasts. We further demonstrated that the promotive effect of eEF-2K on glycolysis resulted from the kinase-mediated restriction of synthesis of the protein phosphatase 2A-A (PP2A-A), a key factor that facilitates the ubiquitin-proteasomal degradation of c-Myc protein, as knockdown of eEF-2K expression led to a significant increase in PP2A-A protein synthesis and remarkable downregulation of c-Myc and pyruvate kinase M2 isoform, the key glycolytic enzyme transcriptionally activated by c-Myc. In addition, depletion of eEF-2K reduced the ability of the transformed cells to proliferate and enhanced the sensitivity of tumor cells to chemotherapy both in vitro and in vivo. These results, which uncover a role of the eEF-2K-mediated control of PP2A-A in tumor cell glycolysis, provide new insights into the regulation of the Warburg effect.

Abstract
Acute-on-chronic hepatitis B liver failure (ACHBLF) has a poor prognosis in patients with hepatitis B virus infection. The role of the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), which reflects the inflammatory status of the patient before treatment, has never been studied in this setting. To investigate the predictive value of NLR in patients with ACHBLF, a retrospective cohort with 216 patients and a prospective validation cohort with 73 patients were recruited. Multivariate analyses showed that total bilirubin (TBIL), NLR, age and model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score had prognostic significance for survival. Both NLR (0.781) and MELD score (0.744) had higher ROC curves, which differed significantly from those for age (0.615) and TBIL (0.691), but not from each other (P = 0.94). NLR ≤ 2.36 predicted lower mortality (with 91.6% sensitivity and 86.0% negative predictive value), and NLR >6.12 was a warning sign for higher mortality risk (with 90.1% specificity and 80.3% positive predictive value). These results demonstrated that pretreatment NLR was associated with the prognosis of patients with ACHBLF, and elevated NLR predicted poor outcome within 8 weeks. We suggest that NLR cut-offs of ≤ 2.36 and >6.12 are powerful markers for predicting mortality in ACHBLF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have investigated the biomechanical changes in the upper esophageal sphincter (UES) and pharyngeal function after successful dilatation therapy for dysphagia. Using high-resolution manometry (HRM), we examined the biomechanical properties of swallowing in brainstem stroke patients with dysphagia following modified balloon dilation therapy. METHODS 30 brainstem stroke patients with dysphagia were included. Patients in the experimental group received 3 weeks of modified balloon dilatation treatment and regular dysphagia therapy. Patients in the control group received 3 weeks of regular dysphagia therapy only. Efficacy of treatment was evaluated before and following intervention. Functional oral intake was measured using the Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS). Pharyngeal maximum pressures and duration, UES residual pressure and duration during swallowing were measured using HRM. KEY RESULTS In the experimental group, the feeding tube was able to be removed in 12 of 15 patients, vs 2 of 15 patients in the control group. The experimental group had 4-point median improvement, while control groups only had 1-point improvement in FOIS scores. In the experimental group, posttreatment UES relaxation and pharyngeal propulsion were both significantly improved for the three materials (p < 0.05) and UES resting pressure approximated normal. In the control group, pharyngeal propulsion was improved for water and thick liquids (p < 0.05) but not for paste material; there was no improvement in posttreatment UES relaxation for all three materials (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES Dysphagia therapy with modified dilatation improved UES relaxation, strengthened pharyngeal propulsion, restored UES resting pressure and improved functional oral intake to a greater extent than regular therapy alone.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore the expression of tumoral Gal-1 in association with clinical parameters and outcome in a large population with laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas (LSCCs). METHODS A total of 187 patients with LSCC were retrospectively enrolled. Immunohistochemistry was performed to evaluate the tumoral expression of Gal-1, apoptosis-related proteins and the density of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in tumor tissues before any intervene. Survival curves were estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method, and differences in survival between groups were determined using the log-rank test. Prognostic effects were evaluated by Cox regression analysis. RESULTS A total of 102 carcinomas (54.5 %) were identified as high Gal-1 expression, and 85 carcinomas (45.5 %) as low expression. Tumoral Gal-1 expression was not significantly related with clinical stage and histology differentiation. No correlation of Gal-1 expression with apoptosis-related protein was identified. Instead, Gal-1 status was correlated positively with the ratio of FOXP3(+)/CD8(+) TILs (P = 0.024). In multivariate regression analysis, advanced clinical stage and the presence of metastases were identified as the independent predictors for poor survival in entire cohort. Especially, the statistical correlation between the Gal-1 expression and prognosis was particularly due to the late-stage tumors (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Current results represent valuable advancements in Gal-1 research and provided further support for using Gal-1 as a diagnostic biomarker and immunotherapeutic target for LSCC.

Abstract
We demonstrate the fabrication of a novel platform based on Si nanowire arrays integrated with a programmable DNA-directed homogeneous-phase analyte-capture strategy for robust detection of bio-analytes. The nanofabrication process used, based on a combination of glancing-angle-deposition and metal-assisted-catalytic-etching, is capable of producing thousands of testing sites per chip, and the sites can be fabricated over entire wafers, with precise control of size and positioning, using conventional microelectronics technology. The analyte-capture strategy used eliminates the well-known interference of the heterogeneous-phase (substrate) with the capturing of analytes. We examine the effects of the nanoscale features of the substrates (nanowire porosity and clumping) on the coupling efficiency of analytes and show that the fabricated microarrays are robust, have high efficiency and capacity, and provide significantly enhanced signal-to-noise ratio detection.

Abstract
Accurate profiling of microRNAs (miRNAs) is an essential step for understanding the functional significance of these small RNAs in both physiological and pathological processes. Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) has gained acceptance as a robust and reliable transcriptomic method to profile subtle changes in miRNA levels and requires reference genes for accurate normalization of gene expression. 5S and snoU6 RNAs are commonly used as reference genes in microRNA quantification. It is currently unknown if these small RNAs are stably expressed during neuronal differentiation. Panels of miRNAs have been suggested as alternative reference genes to 5S and snoU6 in various physiological contexts. To test the hypothesis that miRNAs may serve as stable references during neuronal differentiation, the expressions of eight miRNAs, 5S and snoU6 RNAs in five differentiating neuronal cell types were analyzed using qPCR. The stabilities of the expressions were evaluated using two complementary statistical approaches (geNorm and Normfinder). Expressions of 5S and snoU6 RNAs were stable under some but not all conditions of neuronal differentiation and thus are not suitable reference genes. In contrast, a combination of three miRNAs (miR-103, miR-106b and miR-26b) allowed accurate expression normalization across different models of neuronal differentiation.

Abstract
Emerging evidence of the striking differences that can be induced in the behavior of biological cells through topographical modulation of physically and chemically patterned nanostructured surfaces provides a great impetus for developing novel cellular-scale and sub-cellular-scale nanopatterned substrates and for employing them for exciting new applications in life and medical sciences and biotechnology. However, the lack of availability of cost-effective, large-surface-area nanofabricated substrates of appropriate dimensions and features has proved to be a major impediment for research in this area. Here, we demonstrate a simple and cost-effective method based on interference lithography to produce spatially precise and wide-surface-coverage silicon- and polymer-based nanostructures to study how cells react to nanoscale structures or surfaces.

Abstract
Mammalian Delta(1)-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthase (P5CS) is a bifunctional ATP- and NAD(P)H-dependent mitochondrial enzyme that catalyzes the coupled phosphorylation and reduction-conversion of L: -glutamate to P5C, a pivotal step in the biosynthesis of L: -proline, L: -ornithine and L: -arginine. Previously, we reported cloning and characterization of two P5CS transcript variants generated by exon sliding that encode two protein isoforms differing only by a two amino acid-insert at the N-terminus of the gamma-glutamyl kinase active site. The short form (P5CS.short) is highly expressed in the gut and is inhibited by ornithine. In contrast, the long form (P5CS.long) is expressed ubiquitously and is insensitive to ornithine. Interestingly, we found that all the established human cell lines we have studied expressed P5CS.long but not P5CS.short. In addition, expression of P5CS.long can be modulated by hormones: downregulation by hydrocortisone and dexamethasone and upregulation by estradiol, for example. Using a quantitative proteomic approach, we showed that P5CS.long is upregulated by p53 in p53-induced apoptosis in DLD-1 colorectal cancer cells. Functional genomic analysis confirmed that there are two p53-binding consensus sequences in the promoter region and in the intron 1 of the human P5CS gene. Interestingly, overexpression of P5CS by adenoviruses harboring P5CS.long or P5CS.short in various cell types has no effect on cell growth or survival. It would be of importance to further investigate the role of P5CS as a p53 downstream effector and how P5CS.short expression is regulated by hormones and factors of alternative splicing in cells isolated from model animals.

Abstract
To search for the biochemical parameters involved in calcium and carbonate transport during crystal formation and biomineralisation in nacreous molluscs, the carbonic anhydrase activity, the levels of calciotropic hormones in hemolymph and in tissues and the circulating concentration of calcium were measured in pearl oysters (Pinctada margaritifera) during a phase of active growth. Activity of carbonic anhydrase in gill tissue increased linearly with age of the animals, while no age variation in activity was noted for the mantle. The circulating level of total calcium increased during the growth of the animals. Calciotropic hormones were radioimmunoassayed in gill, mantle and hemolymph. Only a calcitonin-gene related peptide (CGRP) could be detected and its concentration decreased as a function of growth, both in hemolymph and mantle. No variation in CGRP concentration with age was observed in gill tissue. Our data demonstrate that carbonic anhydrase and a molecule biologically and immunologically related to CGRP are involved during growth of the animals. In addition, this study shows the presence of three main calcium compartments, gill, hemolymph and mantle, involved in the biomineralisation process.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the effect of the Pyracantha fortuneana extract and its defferent polar fractions on blood coagulation. METHODS AND RESULTS The Pyracantha fortuneana extract could noticeably shorten the coagulation time of glass slide in mice (P < 0.05) after oral administration, and also shorten the recalcification time and prothrombin time in vitro (P < 0.01, P < 0.05), while in three polar fractions of the extract, the effects of the chloroform phase that could shorten the coagulation time of glass slide in mice(P < 0.01) after oral administration, and also shorten the recalcification time and prothrombin time in vitro (P < 0.01) are more noticeable than that of the acetic ether phase (P < 0.01, P < 0.05). The petroleum ether phase has no above-mentioned effect (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION The Pyracantha fortuneana extract can reduce the blood coagulation. Both the chloroform phase and the acetic ether phase of the extract have activity of blood coagulation, but the petroleum ether phase does not.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study apolipoprotein E gene polymorphism in children with steroid- resistant idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (SRINS). METHODS Sixty children with SRINS (including 9 children with focalsclerosing glomerulonephritis) were observed in comparison with 80 age-sex-matched healthy children. Seven lipoprote in metabolism parameters including serum total-cholesterol(TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein AI(apoAI), apolipoprotein B (apoB), lipoprotein (a)[Lp (a)] were detected by enzyme method, and single-strand conformation polymorphism(PCR-SSCP) was used to determine the apoE genotypes in the two groups. RESULTS Serum TC, TG, HDL-C, LDL-C, apoAI, apoB, Lp(a) in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the healthy controls (P<0.01). After 6 months, the levels of serum TC, TG, LDL-C,apoB,Lp(a) were 81.25%, 78.13%, 84.38%, 87.50% and 78.13% respectively in 32 SRINS cases of the observation group. The apo epsilon 2 allele gene frequence was higher in the observation group than in the controls (11.66% vs 5.00%, P<0.05). The apo apsilon 2 allele gene frequence in the cases of focalsclerosing glomerulonephritis was significantly higher than that in the controls (22.22% vs 5.00%, P<0.01). CONCLUSION The above results indicate the obvious and long term abnormalities of serum lipoprotein metabolism in the children with SRINS. The apo apsilon 2 allele gene frequence is higher in the children with SRINS. There are risk factors for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases in the children with SRINS. The antilipemic drugs should be considered in use for the children with SRINS.

Abstract
To investigate the combined effect of Ca and Fe on colon carcinogenesis, cell proliferation, apoptosis and fecal bile acids, male Wistar rats were fed the diet containing 5 g Ca/kg (normal Ca) or 15 g Ca/kg (excessive Ca) with 45 mg Fe/kg (normal Fe) or 500 mg Fe/kg (excessive Fe) for 32 days, and given an injection of 1,2-dimethylhydrazine on day 4. Supplemental Ca reduced colonic aberrant crypt foci (ACF), especially in excess Fe group. Excessive Fe elevated the ACF, especially in the normal Ca diet. When the Ca intake was high, excessive Fe caused no influence on the ACF. Alteration of colonic ACF was associated with those of liver and serum Fe concentration. Also, colonic cell proliferation and concentration of deoxycholic acid (DCA) in fecal water-soluble fraction were reduced by supplementation of dietary Ca, but unaffected by that of dietary Fe. Supplementation of Ca and/or Fe elevated colonic cell apoptosis. The results suggest that dietary Ca markedly suppresses colon ACF in the Fe-overloaded rats through altering Fe status, and that supplemental Ca lowers colonic cell proliferation and fecal DCA in the water-soluble fraction and elevates colonic cell apoptosis irrespective of Fe status.

Abstract
Lake water, pore water, and sediments were sampled in both polluted and unpolluted lakes from Southwestern (SW) China Plateau. The results show that although the mechanisms of nutrient regeneration were similar in the polluted and unpolluted lakes, the processes, however, were much stronger in the polluted lakes. Nitrogen regeneration was mainly of organic process. Phosphorus regeneration was essentially controlled by iron redox cycling near sediment/water interface. Nutrient upward fluxes were in the order SiO2 > NH4+ > PO4(3-). This study has significance for further investigating the response of nutrient biogeochemistry to the increasing nutrient levels in aquatic environments.

Abstract
This paper put forward a method of continuous flow transporting sample which was applied in quantitative analysis of main elements Ni, Fe in electroplating solution with X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. The method adopts a winding shaped plastic tube device which carries liquid sample. It is flexible, simple, and practical. Using the fluid itself flowing, we can mostly eliminate the errors that were caused by changing fluid because of long-time radiation by X-ray. Through accuracy and precision experiments, it was proved that the method is reliable, convenient, and quick. The results can meet completely the requirement of production and scientific research. A new method of analysis electroplating solution has been provided. The field of analysis by X-ray fluorescence spectrometer was opened up.

Abstract
Rats were examined for the effect of dietary level of fat (beef tallow or safflower oil) on colonic activity of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) which has been suggested to be associated with colon carcinogenesis. In experiment 1, feeding high fat diets (20%) for 3 weeks caused higher activity of the iNOS compared to feeding low fat diets (5%). In experiment 2, rats were fed 20% or 5% beef tallow diet for 11 or 32 days, and given an injection of a carcinogen, 1,2-dimethylhydrazine on day 4. The activity of colonic iNOS and the development of colonic aberrant crypt foci were enhanced by high fat diet.

Abstract
The effects were examined of the dietary level of fat on the activity of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in the liver of rats. In experiment 1, rats were fed on a diet containing 5% or 20% beef tallow or safflower oil for 32 d. The animals were given a subcutaneous injection of the carcinogen, 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH), on d 4. The activity of hepatic iNOS was significantly elevated by the high-fat diet, but was unaffected by the dietary source of the fat examined. In experiment 2, rats were fed on a 5% or 20% beef tallow diet for 11 d or 32 d with or without the DMH treatment. Feeding the high-fat diet and DMH treatment caused higher activity of hepatic iNOS. In experiment 3, the high-fat diet elevated hepatic iNOS activity and the amount of its protein in the lipopolysaccharide-treated rats. The results suggest that hepatic NO production is enhanced by a high-fat diet.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the role of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) in fetal growth and placental growth. METHODS Cord blood IGF-I was determined by radioimmunoassay (RIA) after serum samples were extracted with acid-ethanol. Linear correlation between variables was tested by calculating pearson's correlation coefficient. student's test was used to compare mean values between groups. RESULTS In 102 tested samples, the concentration of cord blood serum IGF-I was correlated with the gestational age, the birth weight of neonates and placental weight (r = 0.32, P < 0.001, r = 0.68, P < 0.001, r = 0.75, P < 0.001). The mean serum level of IGF-I in the small-for-gestational-age (SGA) neonates was significantly lower than that in average-for gestational-age (AGA) (t = 4.77, P < 0.001), But the serum concentration of IGF-I in the Large-for-gestational-aga (LGA) neonates was significantly higher than that of AGA neonates (t = 7.97, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Those results suggested that IGF-I is an important regulator for fetal and placental growth and development. It has the key role for macrosomia and IUGR forming.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the immunohistochemical localization of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) in human placenta and to evaluate the role of IGF-I in fetal growth and placental growth. METHODS In 72 tested samples, The cellular distribution of IGF-I in human placenta was determined by using immunohistochemistry. The relative area and mean absorbance were determined by using image analysis technique. Student's t-test was used to compare mean values between groups. RESULTS IGF-I immunostaining was found in syncytiotrophoblast, cytotrophoblast and Hoffbauer's cells of chorionic villi and chorion of fetal membranes. The strongest immunoreactivity was observed in the syncytiotrophoblast and cytotrophoblast. The relative area and absorbance in placenta of SGA group were significantly lower than those of AGA group respectively (t = 4.65, P < 0.001; t = 2.15, P < 0.05). But the relative arca and absorbance of LGA were significantly higher than those of AGA (t = 8.72, P < 0.001; t = 7.82, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION These results suggested that IGF-I in human placenta was principally synthsized and secreted by syncytiotrophoblast, cytotrophoblast, hoffbauer's cells of chorionic villi and chorion of fetal membranes. IGF-I is an improtant regulator of fetal and placental growth and development. It has the key role for macrosomia and IUGR forming.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To elucidate the transmission dynamic and epidemic trend of bancroftian filariasis occurred under the condition with no control measure taken 5 years after elimination of filariasis. METHODS A 10-year longitudinal observation (from 1984 to 1994) was made in Huayuan Village in Shengli Township of Tancheng County, which used to be a high bancroftian filariasis-endemic area in southern part of Shandong Province. RESULTS The microfilarial rate decreased from 0.56% before the study to 0.12% after the study and 8 out of the 9 previous microfilaria-positive cases became negative gradually. During the study period, 6 new microfilaremia cases were detected, 5 of which became negative naturally within 3 to 4 years. Eighty-eight point eight nine per cent of the detected patients with microfilaremia converted into IgG4-negative after 10 years. The natural infective rate of vectors decreased year by year and became zero by the tenth year of the study, the annual transmission potency decreased also from 3.47 to zero by the tenth year. CONCLUSIONS It showed that under the local natural environment the biting rate representing the vector density which was obtained by capture method was from 24.1 to 52.5 person/night among the residents who did not use mosquito nets, and 13.5 to 21 person/night among the residents who used mosquito nets. The microfilarial rate of 0.56% in population with the average microfilarial density of 6.6 to 20.7 capita/60 microliters ear blood of residual microfilaria-positive patients might be considered as the terminal threshold of transmission.

Abstract
Pericardiocentesis and drainage with a silicon rubber line were performed safely in 55 patients via the subxiphoid (80 times) or apical (1 time) approach at the bedside without echocardiographic guidance. The subxiphoid approach, which is close to the posterior of the sternum or the costal cartilage with a small acute-angle (15-30 degrees) to the parietal pericardium in front of the right ventricle, can avoid injuring the heart, liver and lungs. A line with sideholes near the distal end, which provides convenient drainage and has better histocompatibility, can be kept in place for a long period of time (1-82 days). It was also convenient to inject air, drugs or fluid through the line. There were no procedure-related serious complications or deaths. Emergency drainage with the Seldinger technique, especially for small to moderate effusions, is safe and simple.

Abstract
The hair taken from 40 rats with diabetic cataract and 20 normal controls was tested by using ESR. It was found that the 'g factor' of the hair of the rats with diabetic cataract is higher than that in normal controls. The intensity of ESR signals of the hair taken from rats with diabetic cataract is three times higher than that of ESR signals of the hair from the normal controls. The results have suggested a good reappearance and a remarkable increase in number of the free radicals and other particles of paramagnetic substances during the course of the development of the rats' diabetic cataract. The study provides new scientific data for the theory of free radicals damaging to the crystal in the process of the formation of diabetic cataract.
