Abstract
A 5-year-old girl with a history of recurrent urinary tract infection since the age of 14 months was diagnosed as having a right duplicated urinary collecting system with the upper ureter ectopically opening in the urethra. She underwent retroperitoneoscopic heminephrectomy for a right dysplastic kidney and open ureterocelectomy and reimplantation of the refluxing lower ureter via Pfannenstiel incision. She survived the procedure without serious complications and resumed normal daily activities by day 6. To the best of our knowledge, this case is the 16th case of laparoscopic heminephrectomy for pediatric patients and the first case treated by the retroperitoneal approach in the English literature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS It is known that allelic variants of the gene encoding the vitamin-D receptor (VDR) detected by BsmI increase the risk of some advanced malignant tumors, suggesting that such variants may cause functional differences in 1,25(OH)(2) vitamin D(3). We examined the VDR genes of Japanese systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, to determine whether different genotypes are correlated with SLE or its criteria. METHODS VDR genotyping of 58 unrelated Japanese SLE patients was performed based on polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). Following amplification, products were digested with BsmI. The RFLPs were coded as Bb, where the uppercase letter signifies the absence of the digested site and the lowercase letter signifies the presence of the site. RESULTS The frequency of the VDR BB genotype was significantly higher in SLE patients (15.5%, n = 9/58, p < 0.0001) than in controls (5.7%, n = 5/87). Furthermore, a larger proportion of bb individuals was observed among patients with nephrotic syndrome (61.5%, n = 8/13) than among SLE patients without renal dysfunction (35.7%, n = 10/28). There was a significant tendency for the population of patients with the bb genotype to be correlated with that of patients with renal dysfunction (p = 0.0304). CONCLUSION These findings suggest that the BB genotype might trigger the development of SLE, and that the bb genotype is associated with lupus nephritis.

Abstract
We studied the changes in the serum creatinine level and the volume of the remaining kidney following nephrectomy using contrast-enhanced compounded tomogram (CT) scans. Twenty-five patients undergoing nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma without obvious disease in the remaining kidney were carefully followed for a period of at least two years at our hospital. Twelve patients received follow-up CT scans each year after nephrectomy. The ellipsoid volume of the kidney was calculated by measuring the 3-dimensional size on CT scans. The mean relative volume (%) of the remaining kidney increased up to year 3 postoperatively, and the final mean relative volume at varying periods from years 2 to 7 was 120%. Kidneys that were smaller prior to nephrectomy showed a tendency to have a larger final relative volume after nephrectomy, although there was no significant correlation between the kidney volume prior to nephrectomy and at final measurement. The mean serum creatinine level was significantly increased at one year after nephrectomy, but it decreased significantly over time. Therefore, both compensatory renal hypertrophy and improved renal function seemed to be established within several years after nephrectomy. However, the improvement of serum creatinine was delayed compared with the increase of kidney volume. That is, renal plasma flow might be increased early by compensatory renal hypertrophy, followed within a few years by an increase in glomerular filtration and a decrease of serum creatinine.

Abstract
We investigated the levels of various cytokines and soluble factors in ITP patients, in order to determine the influence of these factors on the pathogenesis of ITP. We found increases in IL-2, IL-6, IFN-gamma, and M-CSF levels in ITP patients compared with those in healthy individuals. On lymphocyte phenotype analysis, we found no clear difference in total T cell population (CD2+ CD19- cells) or cytotoxic T cell frequency (CD8+ CD11b- cells) between these two groups. The frequency of helper/inducer T cells (CD4+ CD8- cells) was decreased in ITP patients. There was a significant increase in activated T cells (CD3+ HLA-DR+ cells) in ITP patients. Furthermore, frequencies of NK cells of potent activity (CD16+ CD56+ cells) were significantly elevated in ITP patients. Seventeen of the 54 ITP patients (31.5%) had elevated levels of sFas, and 11 of the 54 patients (20.4%) of sFasL. In addition, a significant increase of sFasL was observed in sFas-positive ITP patients, and in these patients the sFasL level was correlated with that of sFas (r = 0.687, p < 0.01). We found significant increases in IL-2 and sIL-2R levels in sFas-positive ITP patients. For other factors examined, however, there were no differences in level between sFas-positive and -negative ITP patients. Percentages of activated T cells (CD3+ and HLA-DR+ cells) and NK cells (CD16+ and CD56+ cells) were significantly higher in sFas-positive ITP patients than in sFas-negative ITP patients. These findings suggests that the pathogenesis of ITP includes alteration of the Fas/FasL pathway.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was performed to evaluate the significance of sonographic fetal biometry in predicting low birth weight. METHOD Five hundred and sixty-eight single-term pregnancies were analyzed. They were stratified into seven subgroups by birth weight deviation (BWD). Among the 568 pregnancies, 115 were revealed to be small-for-gestational-age (SGA) (birth weight less than mean -1.5 S. D.). When IUGR was suspected by routine sonographic fetal biometry, 'IUGR work-up' was carried out. The diagnostic performance of our screening method for the detection of SGA pregnancies in the general population was calculated. RESULT The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and odds ratio of our screening method for the detection of SGA pregnancies in the general population were 73.0, 96.6, 83.2, 98.0% and 131.0, respectively. CONCLUSION These data suggest that sonographic biometry is useful for the prenatal detection of high-risk cases of fetal growth restriction.

Abstract
High-dose chemotherapy with peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT) has become an important method of treatment for hematological and solid tumors. We examined levels of interleukin(IL)-4, interferon (IFN)gamma, soluble (s) CD30, and sIL-2 receptor (R) before and after autologous PBSCT, and compared findings for PBSCT with those for bone marrow transplantation (BMT). We found significantly higher IL-4 levels 1 and 3 weeks after PBSCT than before PBSCT, while IFNgamma levels remained almost unchanged after PBSCT. IFNgamma levels were increased 3 weeks after BMT, although no increase in IL-4 level was observed. The serum sCD30 level was significantly higher 3 weeks after PBSCT, but not following BMT. For 34 samples on days 0 and 21 from 17 patients undergoing PBSCT, a strong correlation was observed between sCD30 and sIL-2R levels (r = 0.43, P < 0.01). However, no significant correlation between sCD30 and sIL-2R levels was found for BMT patients. These findings suggest that sCD30 is a useful marker for evaluating immunological activity following autologous PBSCT, and that the immunological conditions after autologous PBSCT may be associated with helper-T-cell-2-type immune responses.

Abstract
We examined some immunological parameters, particularly cytokines and soluble factors in collagen diseases complicated with essential hypertension. We also investigated the effects of Nilvadipine on immunological parameters after treatment with this drug for six months. The frequency of helper/inducer T cells (CD4+ CD8- cells, CD4+ CD45RA- cells) decreased in the peripheral blood on a 6 month treatment with nilvadipine. There was a significant decrease of suppressor/inducer T cells (CD4+ 45RA+ cells), and an insignificant decrease of activated T cells (CD3+ HLA-DR+ cells) and memory T cells (CD45RA- CD45RO+ cells) after treatment. Before treatment with Nilvadipine, interleukin-1beta, tumor necrosis factor-a, and interleukin-6 levels increased higher in the patients than in healthy volunteers. However, interleukin-1beta and interleukin-6 concentrations tended to decrease after treatment with Nilvadipine. Besides, tumor necrosis factor-alpha decreased significantly after treatment. The soluble interleukin-2 receptor concentrations also showed a decreased tendency after treatment, although high concentrations were found in the patients before treatment. In contrast, soluble human leukocyte antigen-1 and soluble thrombomodulin levels showed no significant change after treatment. These results suggest that Nilvadipine inhibits the generation of cytokines derived from activated T lymphocytes. Nilvadipine, calcium antagonist, may be useful for inhibition of vascular complication in collagen diseases.

Abstract
The in vitro effects of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and human insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) on the formation of oocyte-granulosa cell (heterologous) and granulosa cell-granulosa cell (homologous) gap junctions (GJ) were determined during the course of development of oocyte maturational competence (OMC) in ovarian follicles of red seabream. Incompetent, full-grown follicles were incubated in hCG (10 IU/ml), IGF-I (10 nM), or hormone-free medium for 0, 6, and 12 h and examined by electron microscopy. Qualitative analysis indicated that homologous and heterologous GJ were relatively rare in incompetent follicles and remained rare if they were maintained in control medium. However, both types of GJ were readily observed in follicles treated with hCG or IGF-I. For quantitative analysis, we measured changes in the combined numbers of both GJ types, since discrimination between the two was not always possible. The numbers of GJ along 125 micrometer of granulosa cell-zona radiata border were counted in three follicles/treatment. GJ markedly increased with time in the presence of hCG or IGF-I but not in control medium (Duncan's multiple range test; P < 0.05). Functional assays confirmed that the hormonal treatments also induced OMC. Naturally competent follicles sampled at the appropriate stage of the reproductive cycle contained high levels of both types of GJ suggesting that the OMC-associated increase in GJ is physiologically relevant. In view of similar, earlier results with the Atlantic croaker, the present results support the concept that an increase in homologous and heterologous GJ is a general developmental event associated with the acquisition of OMC in teleost ovarian follicles. Also, a novel finding of this study is that IGF-I can regulate heterologous and homologous GJ in intact ovarian follicles.

Abstract
We investigated the significance of platelet activation and platelet-derived microparticles (PMP) in 14 patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and hematological malignancies. In the phenotypic analysis of lymphocytes, there was a significant decrease of total and activated T cells after panipenem/betamipron (PAPM/BP) treatment (p<0.05). The percentages of helper/inducer T cells and suppressor/cytotoxic T cells were insignificantly decreased after PAPM/BP treatment. The number of natural killer (NK) cells of potent activity was significantly decreased after treatment (p<0.05). The levels of the cytokines interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-6, and IL-8 in the patients were increased before treatment. IL-1beta concentrations were not changed after treatment. In contrast, the IL-6 and IL-8 levels were significantly decreased (p<0.05) after treatment, while tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and interferon gamma remained almost normal. We found an increase of soluble IL-2 receptor (sIL-2R) and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1) levels in the patients before treatment. After treatment, the sIL-2R concentrations tended to be decreased and sVCAM-1 levels showed a significant decrease (p<0.01). In contrast, soluble thrombomodulin (sTM) level did not change. Regarding the platelet activation markers, CD62P, CD63, and PMP levels in the patients were increased before treatment. CD62P and CD63 tended to be decreased after treatment, whereas PMP levels were significantly reduced from 1,056+/-103 to 762+/-64/10(4) platelets (p<0.05). Furthermore, CD62P, CD63, and PMP correlated with the levels of IL-6 and IL-8. These results suggest that activated platelets and PMP may be predictive markers in pre-disseminated intravascular coagulation and hypercytokine conditions related to SIRS.

Abstract
We performed genetic analysis of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) and human platelet antigen (HPA) in 45 patients with cepharanthin-treated idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. HLA-typing was performed by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method, and HPA-typing by a polymerase chain reaction-sequence-specific primer method. There were 14 responders and 31 nonresponders. Responders included many patients who had already been treated with prednisolone. HLA-DRB1*0901 was significantly more common in responders than in nonresponders. In contrast, HLA-DRB1*0410 and DQB1*0401 were significantly more common in nonresponders. The a/b genotype of HPA-2a/2a (Ko(b)/Ko(b)) was significantly increased in responders. In contrast, HPA-2a/2b (Ko(b)/Ko(a)) and HPA-3a/3b (Bak(a)/Bak(b)) were significantly more common in nonresponders. These findings suggest that genetic studies of HLA and HPA can predict the response of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura to cepharanthin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Bladder neck hypermobility causes cystocele in middle to old elderly women. We developed an easy and useful surgical technique for cystocele. METHODS Thirteen patients with cystocele (grade 2-4) were operated by fornix of the vagina suspension. Patients were placed on lithotomy position under general or spinal anesthesia. Lower midline or lower abdominal transverse incision was made to open the peritoneum and denuded vesicouterine pouch. Several nylon sutures were placed on the lateral side of exposed fornix of the vagina. These sutures were suspended to anterior layer of the rectus sheath. Fornix of the vagina was fixed to the rectus muscle, so the prolapsed bladder wall was pulled up in normal position. RESULTS Operating time ranged from 15-110 minutes (average 73 minutes). Ten patients of thirteen were successful up to 2-43 months postoperatively. Cystocele recurred in three patients of thirteen. Two patients was re-operated by the same method, but one of them recurred. Two of three recurrent patients had grade 4 cystocele. CONCLUSION Fornix of the vagina suspension for cystocele seems useful and promising because of easy procedure without serious morbidity, especially in elderly high-risk patients.

Abstract
Renal transplantation for patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) remains controversial. We performed living-tissue related renal transplantation on a 45-year-old woman with SLE and an eight-month history of hemodialysis. We also did cadaveric renal transplantation on a 41-year-old man with SLE and a 12-year history of hemodialysis. Serological tests including tests for antinuclear antibodies and complements were negative prior to surgery and throughout the course in both cases. The latter patients survived herpes-zoster virus infection in month 6 and bacterial pneumonia in month 9 after transplantation. Neither patient experienced any rejection or relapse of lupus nephritis after the procedure, and both maintained good renal allograft functions. The recurrence of lupus nephritis is reportedly extremely rare, i.e., with a possibility rate of less than 1% in transplant patients with burnt-out SLE. To the best of our knowledge, these cases are the 27th and 28th case reports of renal transplantation for SLE patients in Japanese literature.

Abstract
To investigate whether placental factors are involved in the intermittent breathing movements in goat fetuses, we assessed electrocortical activity (ECoA) and tracheal pressure in 5 fetuses (124-135 days) separated from the placenta and connected for 48 h to an extrauterine fetal incubation system that provided umbilical arteriovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The fetal physiological condition on this system was almost the same as that in utero for at least 48 h after the preparation. All fetuses showed intermittent low-voltage ECoA and breathing movements. The breathing movements occurred almost exclusively during periods of low- voltage ECoA. The proportions of time spent in low-voltage ECoA and breathing movements were 48-57% and 46-56%, respectively. In conclusion, breathing movements of fetuses on the extrauterine incubation system were episodic, suggesting that intermittent breathing movements are intrinsic to fetuses, independent of placenta-derived factors.

Abstract
During the period from July 1995 to June 1996 we performed transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) on 824 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Among them, 13 were dementia patients between 74 and 96 years old; they presented with urinary hesitancy in 6, retention in 4, frequency in 2 and incontinence in 1 patient. Past history included stroke in 7, hypertension in 6, pulmonary tuberculosis in 4, diabetes in 3, asthma in 2, angina pectoris in 1, Parkinson's disease in 1, pneumonia in 1, and hepatitis in 1. Careful preoperative examination revealed that they were proper candidates for TURP. They underwent TURP under spinal anesthesia. The mean operative time was 34 min, ranging from 20 to 60 min. The adenoma resected weighed 24 g on the average, ranging from 7.5 to 48 g. During surgery, although hypotension was noted in 2 patients, there was no serious morbidity. Their mental condition was well controlled with ketamine and diazepam during and after surgery. Postoperative complications included acute myocardial infarction in 1, multiple gastric ulcer in 1, and decubitus in 1. None died within 3 months after TURP, 3 died there after, and 10 patients were alive at the mean follow-up period of 26 months. Six patients reported good urination, 3 reported some improvement in urination after surgery, although requiring intermittent catheterization and 1 developed mild incontinence. In conclusion, TURP appears to provide some benefit in selected patients with dementia and should not be considered to be a contraindication for such patients.

Abstract
Specific and sensitive radioimmunoassays (RIAs) were newly developed for two types of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), namely, seabream (sb) GnRH and chicken (c) GnRH-II. We employed these two RIAs together with a previously reported RIA for salmon (s) GnRH to study the presence and regional distribution of these three GnRHs in the brains and pituitaries of four perciform fishes (red seabream, Pagrus major; black seabream, Acanthopagrus schlegeli; striped knifejaw, Oplegnathus fasciatus; and Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus), as well as clarify seasonal changes in levels of these GnRHs in the brain and pituitary of red seabream. All three GnRHs were found in brains of all fishes examined, with regional distributions in the brains of the three GnRHs being rather similar. sbGnRH was abundant in telencephalon and hypothalamus. cGnRH-II was concentrated from the middle to posterior part of the brain and distributed throughout the brain. sGnRH was concentrated in the olfactory bulb and distributed all over the brain, as was cGnRH-II. The dominant form of GnRH in the pituitary was sbGnRH, with levels 500- to 2400-fold higher than those of sGnRH, while cGnRH-II was undetectable in all four species. In the brain and pituitary of female red seabream, levels of both brain and pituitary sbGnRH increased from October (immature phase) and reached a peak in April (spawning phase), reflecting the increase in gonadosomatic index and vitellogenesis. However, levels of sbGnRH remained high only in the pituitary of completely regressed fish in June. Levels of both sGnRH and cGnRH-II in the brain were higher in the regressed phase and remained lower during the spawning phase. From these and previous results, it appears that sbGnRH is physiologically the most important form of GnRH in reproduction in red seabream and, probably, in other perciforms also.

Abstract
Lysozyme was identified in the coelomic fluid including coelomocytes of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus intermedius, and its lytic activity and biochemical properties were examined in this study. The urchin lysozyme was electrophoretically fractionated to a single lytic band of about 14 kDa. No distinct difference in the lytic activity of this enzyme was found between urchins held at two temperatures, 11 degrees and 25 degrees C. The lysozyme of this species was purified through several procedures: salting out with ammonium sulfate, precipitation by ethanol saturation, gel filtration with a Biogel column, and an affinity chromatography with a heparin Sepharose column. The combination method of Biogel filtration and affinity chromatography resulted in the most purified lysozyme fraction, but we could not obtain a single protein band in SDS-PAGE. In addition, anti-hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) antibody was produced and confirmed to react specifically with the urchin lysozyme in this study. Therefore, the HEWL antibody may be available for examining the lytic activity of lysozyme at an individual level to determine the biodefense activity of sea urchins. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.

Abstract
We performed human leukocyte antigen (HLA) and human platelet antigen (HPA) in patients with Kami-kihi-to-responsive idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. The HLA-A2, A61 and Cw1 were significantly increased in responders compared with nonresponders, as were HLA DRB1 *0901, DRB1 *1502, and DPB1 *0501. In contrast, HLA DPB1 *0201 and DPB1 *0901 were significantly decreased in responders. The a/b genotype of HPA-2 and a/a genotype of HPA-3 were markedly increased in nonresponders, and anti-GPIb antibody was also increased. These results suggest that HLA, HPA, and anti-GP antibody studies may predict the response of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura to Kami-kihi-to.

Abstract
The effects of red seabream gonadotropins (PmGTH I and PmGTH II) on the induction in vitro of germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) and the development of maturational competence (responsiveness to maturation-inducing steroid) were examined in the oocytes of red seabream. PmGTH II was highly effective in inducing GVBD in both maturationally incompetent (45.6 +/- 3.2% GVBD at a concentration of 300 ng/ml) and competent oocytes (42.3 +/- 0.4% GVBD at a concentration of 300 ng/ml). 17,20beta-Dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP, 10 ng/ml) increased the frequency of GVBD induced by PmGTH II. PmGTH I (33, 100, 300, and 900 ng/ml) was unable to induce GVBD at any tested concentration in the presence or absence of DHP. Actinomycin D (1 microgram/ml) and cycloheximide (1 microgram/ml) totally inhibited the PmGTH II-induced GVBD in the presence and in the absence of DHP. Both PmGTH I and PmGTH II stimulated in vitro production of 11-ketotestosterone in sliced testes of red seabream in a similar potency. These results indicate that PmGTH II, but not PmGTH I, induces the final maturation of oocytes, as well as the development of the maturational competence of oocytes, in red seabream.

Abstract
We examined tissue factor expression on lipopolysaccharide-stimulated endothelial cells and their small vesicles by using specific antibodies and flow cytometry. Tissue factor functional activity was also assessed by activation of factor X. Endothelial cells were stimulated with 10 microg/ml of lipopolysaccharide in M-199/bovine serum albumin. Flow cytometry showed that expression of tissue factor on endothelial cells reached a maximum at 6 hours after stimulation, whereas that on small vesicles reached a maximum after 12 hours. Factor X activation mediated by factor VIIa and tissue factor was observed over a similar time course and was inhibited by the addition of antitissue factor antibody. Immunoelectron microscopy suggested that small vesicles with expression of some tissue factor were produced from the surface of endothelial cells. Our findings thus showed that tissue factor on endothelial cells produced by lipopolysaccharide stimulation was partly released to small vesicles. This may cause disseminated intravascular coagulation and related coagulation disorders.

Abstract
We evaluated the plasma concentrations of soluble adhesion molecules and platelet-derived microparticles (PMP) in patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and studied the effect of cilostazol on PMP generation. There were differences in the levels of soluble adhesion molecules between NIDDM patients (N = 43) and the control subjects (N = 30) (soluble thrombomodulin: 11.5+/-5.3 vs. 7.0+/-1.2 TU/ml, p<0.0001; soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1: 708+/-203 vs. 492+/-113 ng/dl, p<0.0001; soluble intercellular cell adhesion molecules- 1: 274+/-65 vs. 206+/-48 ng/dl, p<0.0001; soluble P-selectin: 194+/-85 vs. 125+/-43 ng/dl, p<0.0001). There were also differences in the levels of PMP and platelet activation markers between NIDDM patients and the controls (PMP: 943+/-504 vs. 488+/-219/10(4) plt, p<0.0001; platelet CD62P: 9.2+/-4.6 vs. 4.4+/-4.3%, p<0.001; platelet CD63: 10.2+/-4.5 vs. 4.5+/-3.3%, p<0.0001; platelet annexin V: 9.1+/-3.9 vs. 5.3+/-3.8%, p<0.001). To study the release of PMP into plasma, a modified cone-and-plate viscometer was used. Increased release of PMP from platelets was observed in diabetic plasma compared to normal plasma under high shear stress conditions (2,672+/-645 vs. 1,498+/-386/10(4) plt, p<0.05). Therefore, one cause of PMP elevation in NIDDM may be high shear stress. The levels of PMP, activated platelets, and soluble adhesion molecules all decreased significantly after treatment with cilostazol. These results suggest that cilostazol may be useful for the inhibition of both PMP-dependent and -independent vascular damage in NIDDM.

Abstract
A 22-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with fever, generalized lymphadenopathy, and pancytopenia in February 1995. She was diagnosed as having systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) based on positivity for anti-nuclear antibody, and polyarthritis among other findings. A diagnosis of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) was made based on the increase of FDP and other data (DIC score: 7). We also detected an anti-fibrinogen antibody. Lymph node biopsy revealed subacute necrotizing inflammation and there were on signs of the hemophagocytic phenomenon in bone marrow. The DIC score improved and the anti-fibrinogen antibody disappeared in association with the response of SLE to prednisolone therapy. The onset of SLE associated with DIC has never been reported before, as far as we could determine. The mechanism of DIC associated with SLE may be related to endothelial damage caused by immune complexes.

Abstract
We performed HLA-A, -B, and -C antigen and -DR DNA typing in 111 Japanese patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). DRB1*0410 was significantly increased in ITP patients compared with healthy controls (relative risk = 9.52, P < .05), but the other DRB1*04 alleles showed no significant differences. On HLA-DR serotyping, patients with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (VKH) had a high frequency of DR4, so we compared the frequencies of DRB1*04 suballeles between ITP and VKH. The high frequency of DRB1*04 was dependent on DRB1*0405 in VKH, but on DRB1*0410 in ITP. Plasma autoantibodies were studied in 111 patients using a microtiter well assay. Thirty-six patients had anti-GPIIb/IIIa autoantibodies, and antibody positivity was associated with HLA-DR4 (29 of 36, 80.6% v 28 of 75, 37.3%) but not with DRB1*0410. When HLA-DR4 and DRB1*0410 were compared between patients with a good or poor response to prednisolone, HLA-DR4 was decreased and DRB1*0410 was significantly decreased (chi2 = 11.455, P < .01) in patients with a good response. In conclusion, this study showed that genetically determined factors influence the course of ITP. However, our findings should be considered preliminary because of possible racial differences in HLA status between Japanese and other ITP patients.

Abstract
Immunocytochemical identification of GTH I and GTH II cells in the pituitary of the bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) was performed using antisera specific for the common alpha-subunit and the two distinct beta-subunits of tuna (Thunnus obesus) GTH I and GTH II. Cells of the dorsal part of the proximal pars distalis (PPD), in close association with somatotrophs, displayed immunoreactivity of GTHIbeta. GTH IIbeta immunoreactivity was present in cells of the central part of the PPD and the external border of the pars intermedia. Anti-GTHalpha immunostained both GTH Ibeta- and GTH IIbeta-immunoreactive cells and also thyrotrophs. Both GTH Ibeta- and GTH IIbeta-immunoreactive cells were observed in immature bluefin tuna, although there were greater numbers of GTH IIbeta immunoreactive cells. These results suggest that GTH I and GTH II are synthesized in separate cells in the pituitary of the bluefin tuna. The localization and appearance of the two distinct gonadotropic cells of the tuna are compared with the salmonid arrangement.

Abstract
The presence of behavioral states has been recognized in human fetuses. However, developmental process of fetal behavioral states remains to be clarified. In thirty-one normal pregnant women between 20 and 41 weeks' gestation, fetal movements were examined by using multiple ultrasonic machines. The entire period was divided into eye movement (EM), no eye movement (NEM), and unclassified periods according to the mode of appearance of rapid eye movements. We investigated changes in the ratio of EM and NEM periods and the incidence of various fetal movements in these periods. The ratio of EM periods increased stepwise between 20 and 32 weeks. The difference in the incidence of "startle" and jaw movements between EM and NEM periods was found at 24-27 and 32-35 weeks, respectively. We found a significant decrease in the incidence of total body movements exclusively in NEM periods at 36-39 weeks and a significant increase in the incidence of "rolling" in EM periods at 40-41 weeks. Eye opening was ultrasonographically recognized, providing evidence for awake state in the human fetus. This study revealed the characteristic appearance of fetal movements as related to the presence or absence of EM during the second half of pregnancy, and thereby pointed to differential development process of behavioral states of human fetuses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the changes in resistance indices of blood flow velocity waveforms of the umbilical artery (UmA-RIs) during variable decelerations (VDs) vs. early decelerations (EDs). METHODS UmA-RIs were measured before and during uterine contractions in 30 cases with VDs, nine cases with EDs and 20 cases without decelerations. In 12 out of 30 cases with VDs, UmA-RI was determined at the following five stages of a VD; before the deceleration, downward, bottom, upward and resumption stages. RESULTS UmA-RIs during VDs were significantly higher compared with those at preceding periods. UmA-RIs at downward and bottom stages of VDs were significantly higher than those at the upward stage, although no differences in heart rate were found between downward and upward stages. UmA-RIs during EDs or uterine contractions without decelerations did not differ from those preceding them. CONCLUSION UmA-RIs increased during VDs, particularly at downward and bottom stages during which the cord seemed to be actually compressed.

Abstract
Human platelet glycoprotein Ib/IX complex acts as a receptor for von Willebrand factor. It is widely accepted that glycoprotein Ib is the essential receptor component, but the role of glycoprotein IX is still unclear. We produced a new monoclonal anti-glycoprotein IX antibody (KMP-9) by the hybridoma technique using platelets from a patient with Glanzmann's thrombasthenia. The epitope of KMP-9 was localized to the C-terminal 8 kD fragment of glycoprotein IX using ELISA analysis of polyethylene-pin-synthesized peptides, as well as Western blot analysis of platelets after digestion with N-glycosidase and Staphylococcus aureus V8 protease. KMP-9 partially inhibited high shear stress-induced platelet aggregation, but had no effect on aggregation induced by ristocetin or low shear stress. Its inhibitory effect on high shear stress-induced aggregation was weaker than that of anti-glycoprotein Ib or anti-glycoprotein IIb/IIIa monoclonal antibodies. A 21-mer synthetic peptide (glycoprotein IX L110-G130) inhibited the binding of KMP-9 to platelets. It also competively inhibited the suppression of high shear stress-induced platelet aggregation by KMP-9, but had no direct effect on this aggregation. KMP-9 may be useful to clarify the physiological role of GPIX.

A 33-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of intermittent claudication and finger tip ulceration with a skin rash on the upper and lower extremities. He later developed a massive melena. Angiography revealed arterial occlusion in the hand and foot, skin biopsy showed vasculitis with eosinophilic infiltration, and biopsy of the colon showed mucosal vasculitis with thrombosis. A diagnosis of polyangiitis overlap syndrome was made, and all these symptoms improved after corticosteroid therapy.

Abstract
A 47-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of severe anemia and polyclonal gammopathy. She developed sicca syndrome after admission. Laboratory data revealed pancytopenia (white blood cells, 2,800/microliter; hemoglobin, 6.4 g/dl; platelets, 6.1 x 10(4)/microliter) and hyper gamma globulinemia (5.2 g/dl), and bone marrow was hypoplastic. Histology of the salivary gland showed infiltration of lymphocytes. We report a good response to immunosuppressive therapy in a rare case of aplastic anemia complicating Sjögren's syndrome.

Abstract
To characterize excitation-contraction coupling in Caenorhabditis elegans, we applied two approaches. First, we isolated a mutant having abnormal responses to ketamine, an anesthetic in vertebrates. The novel mutation unc-68(kh30) (isolated as kra-1(kh30)), exhibited strict ketamine-dependent convulsions followed by paralysis. Second, we cloned the C. elegans ryanodine receptor gene ryr-1 that is located near the center of chromosome V. ryr-1 consists of 46 exons, which encode a predicted protein of 5071 amino acid residues that is homologous to Drosophila and vertebrate ryanodine receptors. ryr-1 promoter/lacZ plasmids were expressed in body-wall and pharyngeal muscles. Non-muscle cell expression may be seen with a truncated promoter. In addition, we show that the unc-68/kra-1(kh30) mutation is a Ser1444 Asn substitution at a putative protein kinase C phosphorylation site in ryr-1, and that unc-68(e540) contains a splice acceptor mutation that creates a premature stop codon in the ryr-1 gene. We confirmed that unc-68(e540) is a mutation in ryr-1 by injecting the complete ryr-1 gene into unc-68(e540) animals and recovering wild-type progeny. Results presented here will be useful in studying the structure and function of ryanodine receptors in excitation-contraction coupling and in understanding the evolution of ryanodine receptor tissue specificity.

Abstract
An approach to mapping antigenic B cell epitopes within alpha-helical coiled coil proteins has been developed and applied to two proteins: Streptococcal M protein and C. elegans paramyosin protein UNC-15. Overlapping peptides derived from an alpha-helical coiled coil conformational epitope were embedded between helical flanking peptides derived from the completely unrelated GCN4 leucine zipper peptide. The resulting chimeric peptides exhibited helical propensity. Chimeric peptides were tested for antigenicity (recognition by antibody) or immunogenicity (production of appropriate antibody response). A conformational epitope within the Streptococcal M protein recognised by three mAbs spanned 12 residues. Analysis of chimeric peptides based on C. elegans UNC-15 has enabled fine mapping of the minimal B cell epitope recognised by monoclonal antibody NE1-6B2 to seven non-contiguous residues (spanning 15 residues); the footprint of contact residues involved in antibody recognition being restricted to the hydrophilic face of the helix and covering five helical turns. This chimeric peptide epitope when coupled to diphtheria toxoid was highly immunogenic in mice and antisera recognised the conformationally dependent native peptide epitope. This approach has the potential to map conformational epitopes and design minimal epitopes for use as vaccine candidates.

Abstract
To describe fetal body movements precisely and to clarify their developmental sequence in the second half of pregnancy, fetal body movements were observed in 31 normal fetuses between 20 and 41 weeks of pregnancy by using multiple ultrasonic machines. All movements of the whole trunk were able to be classified into six fundamental movements: flexion, stretch, rolling, startle, stepping, and writhing. Startle was always observed as a single movement, but others were more frequently observed as a part of combination rather than as a single movements. The incidence of flexion and stretch peaked at 28-31 weeks, whereas the incidence of startle and stepping lowered at the period. The incidence of rolling and upper half trunk movements increased at 40-41 weeks. Limb movements were frequent and did not exhibit characteristic change in the incidence. In conclusion, we classified fetal body movements into several fundamental movements instead of using the expression of "general movements" by focusing principally on movements of the trunk. In particular, some of the fundamental movements seem to appear in characteristic ways as related to gestational age. In view of that fetal behaviors are closely related to the neural activity, the present findings may contribute to an understanding of the developmental process of the central nervous system.

Abstract
NNKY5-5, an IgG monoclonal antibody directed against the von Willebrand factor-binding domain of glycoprotein (GP) Ib alpha, induced weak but irreversible aggregation (or association) of platelets in citrate-anticoagulated platelet-rich plasma. This phenomenon was defined as small aggregate formation (SAF). Platelets in hirudin-anticoagulated plasma or washed platelets showed little response to NNKY5-5 alone, but the antibody potentiated aggregation induced by low concentrations of adenosine diphosphate or platelet-activating factor. NNKY5-5 did not induce granule release or intracellular Ca2+ mobilization. However, NNKY5-5 caused tyrosine phosphorylation of a 64-kD protein and activation of a tyrosine kinase, p72syk. An anti-Fc gamma II receptor antibody had no effect on SAF, suggesting that NNKY5-5 activated platelets by interacting with glycoprotein Ib. Fab' fragments of NNKY5-5 did not induce SAF, but potentiated aggregation induced by other agonists. The Fab' fragment of NNKY5-5 induced the activation of p72syk, suggesting that such activation was independent of the Fc gamma II receptor. Cross-linking of the receptor-bound Fab' fragment of NNKY5-5 with a secondary antibody induced SAF. GRGDS peptide, chelation of extracellular Ca2+, and an anti-GPIIb/IIIa antibody inhibited NNKY5-5-induced SAF, but had no effect on 64-kD protein tyrosine phosphorylation or p72syk activations. Various inhibitors, including aspirin and protein kinase C, had no effect on SAF, protein tyrosine phosphorylation, or p72syk activation. In contrast, tyrphostin 47, a potent tyrosine kinase inhibitor, inhibited NNKY5-5-induced SAF as well as tyrosine phosphorylation and p72syk activation. Our findings suggest that binding of NNKY5-5 to GPIb potentiates platelet aggregation by facilitating the interaction between fibrinogen and GPIIb/IIIa through a mechanism associated with p72syk activation and tyrosine phosphorylation of a 64-kD protein.

Abstract
How does muscle gene mutation affect the muscle structure and function of an animal? Mutant animals of the tropomyosin and troponin C genes of Caenorhabditis elegans show Pat (paralyzed, arrested elongation at twofold) phenotypes together with abnormal muscle filament assembly. We present evidence that the mutation sites of lev-11 gene was in the tropomyosin gene, tmy-1 and that of pat-10 was in the troponin C gene, tnc-1, of the worm, respectively. The lev-11 (st557) mutation occurred at the splice donor site of exon 1 and results in translation termination. Although the gene product from heterozygous (+/st557) animal was not detected, our result could be the reason for the Pat phenotype of this mutation. The lev-11(x12) mutation, isolated as an allele of levamisole resistance, occurred in exon 7 and results in amino acid substitution at 234 from Glu to Lys. This substitution give a charge change from - to + at this point which is common in three isoforms. There may be functional importance of this region for molecular interaction of the tropomyosin. Mutation site of pat-10(st575) was Asp64 to Asn and Trp153 to termination in the troponin C. The first mutation site was in the second calcium binding site and the second mutation raised the deletion of H helix in the troponin C. Both might affect the calcium binding or the retaining of the conformation for its function. Results presented here will be useful to understand the interaction site between the tropomyosin and troponin complex.

Abstract
Previous studies have demonstrated that a high level of shear stress can produce platelet aggregation without the addition of any agonist. We investigated whether high shear stress could cause both platelet aggregation and shedding of microparticles from the platelet plasma membrane. A coneplate viscometer was used to apply shear stress and microparticle formation was measured by flow cytometry. It was found that microparticle formation increased as the duration of shear stress increased. Both microparticles and the remnant platelets showed the exposure of procoagulant activity on their surfaces. Investigation of the mechanisms involved in shear-dependent microparticle generation showed that binding of von Willebrand factor (vWF) to platelet glycoprotein lb, influx of extracellular calcium, and activation of platelet calpain were required to generate microparticles under high shear stress conditions. Activation of protein kinase C (PKC) promoted shear-dependent microparticle formation. Epinephrine did not influence microparticle formation, although it enhanced platelet aggregation by high shear stress. These findings suggest the possibility that local generation of microparticles in atherosclerotic arteries, the site that pathologically high shear stress could occur, may contribute to arterial thrombosis by providing and expanding a catalytic surface for the coagulation cascade.

Abstract
To study platelet-derived microparticle generation in diabetes mellitus, we injected alloxan into male Japanese white rabbits. Injection of alloxan induced diabetes, but did not cause any significant change in various biochemical and hematological parameters. However, diabetic rabbits showed a significant elevation of platelet-derived microparticles from 8 weeks after alloxan injection (week 0: 0.45 +/- 0.24%; week 8: 1.12 +/- 0.61%, p < 0.005). These microparticles are known to have prothrombinase activity, suggesting that they may promote vascular complications in diabetes and may be used as a marker of vascular disease.

He was successfully treated with "bypass therapy" using a prothrombin complex concentrate (PCC).

Abstract
We investigated the role of alpha IIb beta 3 in microparticle generation by normal and thrombasthenic platelets stimulated with collagen plus thrombin. Microparticle generation by normal platelets was scarcely inhibited by monoclonal antibodies for glycoprotein Ib and glycoprotein IX. Although one monoclonal anti-alpha IIb beta 3 antibody (NNKY1-32) partly inhibited microparticle generation, 3 other monoclonal anti-alpha IIb beta 3 antibodies had little effect. However, the combination of 4 monoclonal anti-alpha IIb beta 3 antibodies or treatment with a polyclonal anti-alpha IIb beta 3 antibody significantly inhibited microparticle generation (p < 0.05). Microparticle generation by thrombasthenic platelets also occurred after stimulation with collagen plus thrombin, although at a significantly lower level compared with normal platelets. Monoclonal antibodies for resting alpha IIb beta 3, P-selectin, activated alpha IIb beta 3 and beta 2-glycoprotein I bound to microparticles from healthy platelets. In contrast, only a monoclonal antibody for beta2-glycoprotein I bound to thrombasthenic microparticles. These results suggest that microparticle generation by collagen plus thrombin occurs via two different mechanisms which are dependent and independent of alpha IIb beta 3, respectively. The alpha IIb beta 3-dependent mechanism appears to require activation of alpha IIb beta 3.

Abstract
We employed flow cytometry and monoclonal antibodies (MoAb) to study the surface membrane protein of shed particles (small vesicles, SV) that were released from vascular endothelial cells (EC) by agonists such as a Ca ionophore (A23187) and thrombin. After stimulation of EC by A23187, CD9 antigens disappeared entirely from the EC surface in a time- and concentration-dependent manner; they subsequently moved onto the SV surface. Von Willebrand factor (vWF) and P-selectin from Weibel-Palade (W-P) bodies were expressed rapidly on the EC surface after thrombin stimulation, but not on the SV surface. P-selectin may have some effect on maintenance of hemostasis on the EC surface. We demonstrated that the surfaces of SV and EC significantly supported prothrombinase activity and confirmed that A23187-induced SV from EC express binding sites for factors IXa and Xa. These results suggest that the SV are an important factor in a novel controlling mechanism of the coagulation system on the EC surface.

Abstract
The complete tropomyosin gene, designated tmy-1, of Caenorhabditis elegans was recovered by genome walking from a fragment that was obtained by exon-expression cloning using specific cloning using specific anti-tropomyosin antiserum as a probe. The genome structure of the tmy-1 gene has been determined by combining the DNA sequences of cDNA clones with those of the genomic fragments. The single-copy gene spans approximately 13 kb and include 14 exons. Comparison of cDNA and genomic sequences demonstrates that three isoforms are encoded by the gene tmy-1. Homology of the 27 C-terminal amino acid residues to those of Drosophila and vertebrates suggest that these may be the body wall, pharyngeal and non-muscle types. Tissue-specific expression of the tmy-1 gene was determined by microinjection of a promoter/lacZ fusion gene and with immunohistochemistry by using affinity-purified tissue-specific anti-tropomyosins. The 5' end promoter common to CeTMI and CeTMII is expressed in the body wall muscles, vulva, anus muscles and male tail muscles. Control sequences of the 5' end promoter are located 660 to 800 bp upstream of the initial methionine codon. The third isoform, CeTMIII, encoding 256 amino acids residues was expressed in the pharyngeal muscles by the promoter in the third intron. The mRNA of CeTMIII was trans-spliced with SL1 and SL2. These results allow is to solve the question of what is common from this worm to vertebrates, and also what are the cross-species complexities and the tissue-specific differences of tropomyosins. The tmy-1 gene is located on the C. elegans genomic YAC grid near the right end of chromosome I, in the region on the lev-11 gene.

Abstract
There are many biochemical and molecular biological data indicating that IGF-I is present in teleost fish. The present study examines red seabream for the presence and cellular distribution of IGF-I in the ovarian follicles during oocyte growth and final maturation of oocytes by immunocytochemistry. Immunoreactivity appeared in the granulosa cells at the lipid stage. Immunoreactivity became strong at the primary yolk globule stage and diminished in intensity during development of maturational competence (responsiveness to maturation-inducing steroid) and final maturation of oocytes. Intense immunoreactivity was also localized in the outer layer of the zona radiata and the peripheral region of the ooplasm at the primary yolk globule stage. Postovulatory follicles had low immunoreactivity in the early phase of degeneration. These immunocytochemical observations show that the granulosa cell layer is the main site of IGF-I production. IGF-I may be involved in granulosa cell proliferation and differentiation.

Abstract
We investigated the association between low-density lipoprotein (LDL), triglycerides, and platelet activation in 18 patients with hypertension age 41-64 years and 18 with diabetes mellitus aged 43-70 years. Platelet P-selectin positivity and the microparticle level (indicators of activation) were both significantly higher in the diabetics than in healthy controls (P-selectin: 28.0% +/- 7.5% vs. 7.3% +/- 4.2%, P < 0.001; microparticles: 1900 +/- 966 vs. 526 +/- 158/10(4) platelets, P < 0.01). In contrast, there was no significant increase of either parameter in the patients with hypertension. Plasma microparticle levels were also significantly greater in the diabetics with high LDL levels than in those with low LDL levels (2375 +/- 949 vs. 1519 +/- 796/10(4) platelets, P < 0.05), and in those with high rather than low triglyceride levels (2188 +/- 845 vs. 1492 +/- 783/10(4) platelets, P < 0.05). However, platelet positivity for P-selectin was not significantly different between these two subgroups. Microparticle and P-selectin levels both showed no significant difference between the hypertensive patients with high and low LDL or triglyceride levels. These results suggest that platelet-derived microparticles may participate in the development or progression of atherosclerosis in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
We investigated the significance of cytokines (soluble interleukin-2 receptor, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, interleukin-6, and interferon-gamma) and CD68-positive microparticles in immune thrombocytopenic purpura. Cytokines were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and microparticles were detected by flow cytometry. CD68 expression by histiocytic U937 cells incubated with lipopolysaccharide or cytokines was also assessed in a control study. The level of CD68-positive microparticles was significantly higher in the patients with thrombocytopenia than in normal controls (p < 0.01). The soluble interleukin-2 receptor level was also significantly higher in patients than in controls (p < 0.01), but the other cytokines did not show a significant difference. However, patients with severe thrombocytopenia (platelet count > 20,000/microliters) had significantly higher levels of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor and interleukin-6 than the controls (p < 0.05). When opsonized platelets were incubated with activated U937 cells, lipopolysaccharide and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor caused an increase of CD68-positive microparticles in the supernatant. These results suggest that granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor is released by activated T cells in immune thrombocytopenic purpura and activates monocyte/macrophage phagocytosis, resulting in an increase of circulating CD68-positive microparticles and enhanced platelet destruction.

Abstract
Prior to the frequency doubling of a laser diode through a ring resonator, reflection loss on the surface of a novel organic second-order nonlinear optical crystal, 8-(4'-acetylphenyl)-1,4-dioxa-8-azaspiro[4.5]decane (APDA), was decreased. An optically flat crystal surface with a flatness of λ/10 (λ = 633 nm) and surface roughness of 1.5 nm rms was obtained when an ultraprecision diamond turning lathe was used to machine the crystal surface. After this surface was coated antireflectively with an amorphous fluorinated polymer, Teflon AF-2400, the transmittance at 810 nm was increased to 98%. A laser-diode-pumped ring resonator was built with this crystal, and a blue second-harmonic emission at 405.5 nm wassuccessfully generated.

Abstract
We measured soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2 R) in serum samples from 57 patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). The sIL-2 R level was significantly increased in the ITP patients (481.3 +/- 378.5 U/ml) compared with controls (176.2 +/- 66.9 U/ml) (p < 0.001), and was significantly higher in 8 patients positive for hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody positive (1,140.7 +/- 194.3 U/ml) than in 49 HCV-antibody negative patients (378.9 +/- 278.6 U/ml) (p < 0.0001). There was also a significant difference between the HCV-antibody negative ITP patients and the controls (p < 0.01). Elevated sIL-2 R levels correlated with the CD 4/8 ratio (p < 0.05), but not with the platelet count or the level of platelet-associated IgG. The increase of sIL-2 R in ITP may be related to the immunological abnormalities underlying this disease.

Abstract
We investigated the association of beta 2-glycoprotein I and P-selectin with platelet-derived microparticles in 48 patients with immune thrombocytopenic purpura and 20 normal controls using two-color flow cytometric analysis. In addition, anticardiolipin antibodies were detected by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Platelet microparticles from the patients showed a higher positivity for beta 2-glycoprotein I than those from the normal controls (23.1 +/- 15.4% vs. 5.3 +/- 3.1%, p < 0.01), but this positivity was not related to the presence of platelet-associated IgG or to the severity of thrombocytopenia. In the 18 patients with more than 20% P-selectin-positive microparticles, beta 2-glycoprotein I positivity was significantly higher than in the 30 patients with less than 20% P-selectin-positive microparticles (37.1 +/- 20.5% vs. 21.5 +/- 17.3%, p < 0.01). In addition, anticardiolipin antibodies were detected in eight patients, and they had a significantly higher level of beta 2-glycoprotein I-positive microparticles than the patients without such antibodies (42.0 +/- 22.9% vs. 22.6 +/- 18.9%, p < 0.05). Our results suggest that anticardiolipin antibodies activate platelets in immune thrombocytopenic purpura and cause the generation of microparticles rich in beta 2-glycoprotein I and P-selectin. These microparticles may then act to regulate coagulation abnormalities in patients with anticardiolipin antibodies.

Abstract
Complementary DNA fragments encoding the prepro-salmon gonadotropin-releasing hormone ([Trp7, Leu8]GnRH, sGnRH) of the red seabream Pagrus major were amplified from mRNA of the olfactory bulbs using a reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and the full-length cDNA was cloned from a cDNA library using the PCR-amplified cDNA as a probe. The cDNA consisted of 442 bp, including an open reading frame of 270 bp which encoded the prepro-sGnRH (90 amino acid residues). The prepro-sGnRH had the same architecture as that reported in other species. It was composed of a signal peptide, sGnRH and a GnRH-associated peptide (GAP), which was connected to sGnRH by a Gly-Lys-Arg sequence. The prepro-sGnRH of the red seabream had 90% amino acid identity to the prepro-sGnRH from an African cichlid Haplochromis burtoni which belongs to the same suborder as the red seabream; however, identity was lower to the prepro-sGnRH from Atlantic salmon Salmo salar (74%) and masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou (70%). The GnRH peptide itself and the Gly-Lys-Arg sequence in the prepro-GnRH are highly conserved among vertebrates. The red seabream GAP also shows significant amino acid identity to the GAPs of the African cichlid (89%), Atlantic salmon (74%), and masu salmon (67%), but exhibits no significant identity to chicken or mammalian GAP.
