Abstract
In order to achieve a high-quality, i.e., monoenergetic, intense ion beam, we propose the use of a double-layer target. The first layer, at the target front, consists of high-Z atoms, while the second (rear) layer is a thin coating of low-Z atoms. The generation of high-quality proton beams from the double-layer target, irradiated by an ultraintense laser pulse, is demonstrated with three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations.

Abstract
Living creatures are under control of biological clocks with various periods near those of environmental cycles. Examples are circadian (about a day) and circannual (about a year) clocks. We may ask why their periods are not precisely one day or one year because adaptation to the environment should then be easier. Here, introducing a model of competitive population dynamics of biological species with clock dynamics incorporated, it is shown that periods equal or close to that of the environment do not always guarantee overwhelming superiority and can even lead to extinction. This result may provide a clue to solve the mystery.

Abstract
Angiotensin-II (A-II) induces proliferation of zona glomerulosa cells and stimulates expression of cytochrome P-450 aldosterone synthase. The genes activated during this adrenal remodeling are not well defined. To clarify this mechanism, we sought to identify the genes whose expression is stimulated by A-II in the H295R cell line. Using a subtractive hybridization technique, we identified one clone whose expression was stimulated by A-II. The sequence of this gene was homologous to the human interferon-inducible genes, 9-27, 1-8D and 1-8U. The 5' portion of the gene was identical to the 1-8D gene product and the 3' was identical to the 9-27 gene product, but the existence of a transcript was not demonstrated by RT-PCR. The expression of these three genes was stimulated by A-II, with the 9-27 gene being most abundant. Potassium and forskolin also stimulated the expression of the 9-27 gene in the H295R cells, but not as effectively as did A-II or interferon-gamma.

Abstract
A membrane-bound phospholipase D (PLD) has been identified and isolated in a soluble form from an actinomycete, Streptoverticillium cinnamoneum. The enzyme has a monomeric structure with a molecular size of about 37 kDa, being the smallest among the enzymes so far reported. The enzyme catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylserine as preferred substrates, but not the transphosphatidylation reaction of their phospholipid groups to ethanol. Together with the absence of immunochemical cross-reactivity, these enzymatic properties demonstrate that the membrane-bound enzyme is distinct from the extracellular enzyme recently characterized and cloned from the same bacterial strain [C. Ogino et al., J. Biochem. 125 (1999) 263-269] and is therefore regarded as a novel prokaryotic PLD.

Abstract
A 51-year-old woman with overt congestive heart failure with pleural and pericardial effusion was treated with furosemide and nifedipine, leading to improvement in her condition and a decrease in effusions. An echocardiography demonstrated mitral and aortic regurgitation with mitral valve prolapse, which caused the congestive heart failure. Since leukocytopenia and lymphocytopenia with arthralgia could be observed, serological investigations were performed. She was diagnosed as having systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with antiphospholipid syndrome, and started on a treatment of prednisolone and aspirin. Based on the treatment, the pleural and pericardial effusion went into complete remission, indicating that the serositis related to SLE had overlapped the heart failure. Since there was no evidence of any other diseases that could be responsible for the valvular lesions, we concluded that they were due to antiphospholipid syndrome. The administration of prednisolone had no significant effect on valvular morphology or function as demonstrated by echocardiography. When patients with valvular disease are seen, a valvulopathy related to antiphospholipid syndrome should be considered as part of the differential diagnosis.

Abstract
The mechanism(s) of the "aldosterone turn-off phenomenon", hypoaldosteronemia following chronic ACTH administration, remains unclear. Our previous observation that antioxidants prevented turn-off prompted us to evaluate the chronic effect of ACTH on the enzymatic antioxidant system as well as P450aldo activity and expression of CYP11B2 in adrenal zona glomerulosa. Male Wistar rats were administered ACTH-Z for 5 days with or without antioxidants, vitamin E or DMSO. Adrenal capsules were prepared for P450aldo activity measurement and mRNA content determination by competitive RT-PCR, and immunoreactivity of Mn-SOD in whole adrenals was evaluated. ACTH decreased the P450aldo activity and mRNA level of CYP11B2 in adrenal capsules, while co-administration of vitamin E or DMSO partially blocked this inhibition. ACTH increased Mn-SOD mRNA and immunoreactivity but decreased GPx mRNA. These results suggest that prolonged ACTH treatment increases oxidative stress in the zona glomerulosa and an imbalance in the ratio of Mn-SOD to GPx, possibly via corticosterone overproduction in the zona fasciculata, resulting in the downregulation of CYP11B2. Vitamin E and DMSO might thus protect CYP11B2 expression through their antioxidant actions.

Abstract

Lett. 68, 1073 (1992)], the behavior of globally and randomly coupled phase oscillators with distributed intrinsic frequencies. They claim that their simulation results do not confirm the power-law behavior of an order parameter found numerically by the author, attributing its cause to the poor precision of the author's integration scheme. Here demonstrated is that the power law survives even for a scheme better than SR's, provided that finite-size effects are properly taken into account, as was done in our previous work.

Abstract
Stokes pulses of high energy and high-average power were obtained by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) compression of long Nd:YAG laser pulses. The SBS medium used in the single-cell compressor was liquid ultrafiltered Fluorinert FC-75 fluorocarbon. An output pulse duration of 0.9 ns and a peak-power enhancement by 1 order of magnitude were observed for 10-ns, 0.57-J input pulses at a 10-Hz repetition rate. The compressor internal SBS efficiency reached a value of eta(SBS) = 94% and the overall device efficiency a value of eta(dev) = 87%; both values are the highest reported so far to the best of our knowledge. The simple single-cell SBS geometry provided excellent energy and pointing stability of the Stokes pulse. Its temporal shape turned out to be somewhat less stable. The SBS process also partially improved the laser beam quality. The Stokes pulses proved to be capable of generating radiation in the extreme-ultraviolet and soft-x-ray regions over a period of two months without any significant output deterioration.

Abstract
We report what we believe is the first observation of clear soft-x-ray lasing in Ni-like Ag, Te, La, Ce, and Pr and also in Nd covering the spectral range 14.3-7.9 nm. A curved slab target was irradiated with quadruple 1.053-microm laser pulses. The pulse-to-pulse separation for the first three pulses was 400 ps, and that between the third and the fourth pulses was 1.6 ns. The pulse duration and irradiance on the target were 100 ps and ~7 x 10(13) W/cm(2), respectively. For all the targets the most intense lasing was observed at the fourth pump pulse.

Abstract
Near- and far-field characteristics of a germanium soft x-ray laser at the wavelengths of 23.2-23.6 nm (J = 2-1 transitions) and 19.6 nm (J = 0-1 transition) are given for quantitative evaluation of the germanium laser for holographic applications. In-line Gabor holography of simple structured objects, such as thin opaque fibers and a standard electron microscope test specimen, is demonstrated. The holograms were recorded on PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) photoresists and llford Q-plates. The holograms recorded on PMMA were retrieved with an atomic force microscope. The object image was reconstructed by numerical reconstruction with phase retrieval algorithm, resulting in a clear, ghost-free image with sharp edges which infer sub-μm resolution. Future directions for x-ray laser holography are briefly discussed.

Abstract
We describe significant improvement in the efficiency and brightness of the J = 0-1 19.6-nm line of the neonlike germanium laser. A curved slab target was irradiated by two laser pulses of 100-ps duration separated by 300 ps with a total energy of 200-300 J on target. Compared with that obtained by 1-ns single-pulse pumping with 1.1 kJ of energy, the J = 0-1 line has a 12 times higher peak intensity, with a smaller beam divergence of 2 mrad, corresponding to a factor-of-25 improvement in brightness.

Abstract
Arthrobacter sp. strain MIS38 was transformed with a shuttle vector containing the kanamycin resistant gene kan (derived from Tn5) by an electroporation method. This shuttle vector is from Brevibacterium lactofermentum and Escherichia coli, pULRS8. The following optimal condition of electroporation was determined. A square wave pulse of 1 kV/cm electric field strength for 0.5 ms duration yielded 3 x 10(5) transformants/micrograms plasmid DNA. The number of transformants increased with the amount of DNA over the range 0.01-5 micrograms. This host-vector system was then used successfully to clone and express a lipase gene from Arthrobacter sp. strain MIS38 into both Arthrobacter sp. MIS38 and E. coli JM109.

Abstract
A biosurfactant termed arthrofactin produced by Arthrobacter species strain MIS38 was purified and chemically characterized as 3-hydroxydecanoyl-D-leucyl-D-asparagyl-D-threonyl-D- leucyl-D-leucyl-D-seryl-L-leucyl-D-seryl-L-isoleucyl-L-isoleucyl-L-as paragyl lactone. Surface activity of arthrofactin was examined, with surfactin as a control. Critical micelle concentration values of arthrofactin and surfactin were around 1.0 x 10(-5) M and 7.0 x 10(-5) M at 25 degrees C, respectively. Arthrofactin was found to be five to seven times more effective than surfactin. The minimum surface tension value of arthrofactin was 24 mN/m at a concentration higher than the critical micelle concentration. According to the oil displacement assay, arthrofactin was a better oil remover than synthetic surfactants, such as Triton X-100 and sodium dodecyl sulfate. Arthrofactin is one of the most effective lipopeptide biosurfactants.
