Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood maltreatment has been discussed as a risk factor for the development and maintenance of depression. AIMS To examine the relationship between childhood maltreatment and adult depression with regard to depression incidence, severity, age at onset, course of illness and treatment response. METHOD We conducted meta-analyses of original articles reporting an association between childhood maltreatment and depression outcomes in adult populations. RESULTS In total, 184 studies met inclusion criteria. Nearly half of patients with depression reported a history of childhood maltreatment. Maltreated individuals were 2.66 (95% CI 2.38-2.98) to 3.73 (95% CI 2.88-4.83) times more likely to develop depression in adulthood, had an earlier depression onset and were twice as likely to develop chronic or treatment-resistant depression. Depression severity was most prominently linked to childhood emotional maltreatment. CONCLUSIONS Childhood maltreatment, especially emotional abuse and neglect, represents a risk factor for severe, early-onset, treatment-resistant depression with a chronic course.

Abstract
First-year students often become discouraged during introductory biology courses when repeated attempts to understand concepts nevertheless result in poor test scores. This challenge is exacerbated by traditional course structures that impose premature judgments on students' achievements. Repeated testing has been shown to benefit student ability to recognize and recall information, but an effective means to similarly facilitate skill with higher-order problems in introductory courses is needed. Here, we show that an innovative format that uses a creative grading scheme together with weekly formative midterm exams produced significant gains in student success with difficult items requiring analysis and interpretation. This format is designed to promote tenacity and avoid discouragement by providing multiple opportunities to attempt demanding problems on exams, detailed immediate feedback, and strong incentives to retain hope and improve. Analysis of individual performance trajectories with heat maps reveals the diversity of learning patterns and provides rational means for advising students.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Objective. To examine the cross-sectional prevalence of neurological symptoms and signs in a large cohort of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-seropositive men, and determine the relationship of the symptoms to disease stage, immunologic markers, and independent variables from neuropsychological (NP) testing and psychiatric interview. METHODS One hundred-nine controls and 386 HIV-infected volunteers enrolled in the HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center (HNRC) longitudinal study. The majority, without acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), were screened for alcohol/substance abuse; previous diagnosis of HIV-associated dementia; and HIV-unrelated developmental, neurological, medical, and neurobehavioral conditions which potentially impair cognition; and underwent a structured neurological interview and examination, standardized NP testing, and psychiatric interview as part of a more extensive battery. A large subset (N = 377) underwent lumbar puncture for cerebrospinal fluid (CFS) examination. We examined the relationship of sixteen select but independent variables, using stepwise multiple regressions, from demographic/staging, immunological, NP, and psychiatric domains to neurological symptoms in an effort to identify possible predictors of subclinical nervous systems involvement. Results. All categories of neurological symptoms were significantly more prevalent among medically asymptomatic (CDC stage A) subjects than controls, with a further rise in prevalence in those with more advanced stages of infection. The most marked rise was seen in cognitive and sensorimotor complaints. In contrast, significant findings on neurological examination were evident in only the sicker (stage C) subjects. Stage of illness, serum β2-microglobulin, psychiatric indices of depressed mood or anxiety, and NP "motor" performance were the most significant independent variables associated with the presence of neurological symptoms. CSF pleocytosis was seen early (CDC stage A), and may reflect the presence of HIV in the central nervous system (CNS) at the least stages of infection. We also confirmed the value of CSF β2m and neopterin as important markers of advancing disease stage. Whether they predict subclinical CNS involvement is to be determined by longitudinal observations. Conclusion. Neurological complains are common in medically asymptomatic HIV subjects whereas signs are not. The symptoms correlate with commonly determined independent measures of depression, anxiety, NP tests of fine motor speed and strength, as well as indices of disease worsening (CDC stage, serum β2m).

Abstract
X-linked intellectual disability (XLID) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorder. During the past two decades in excess of 100 X-chromosome ID genes have been identified. Yet, a large number of families mapping to the X-chromosome remained unresolved suggesting that more XLID genes or loci are yet to be identified. Here, we have investigated 405 unresolved families with XLID. We employed massively parallel sequencing of all X-chromosome exons in the index males. The majority of these males were previously tested negative for copy number variations and for mutations in a subset of known XLID genes by Sanger sequencing. In total, 745 X-chromosomal genes were screened. After stringent filtering, a total of 1297 non-recurrent exonic variants remained for prioritization. Co-segregation analysis of potential clinically relevant changes revealed that 80 families (20%) carried pathogenic variants in established XLID genes. In 19 families, we detected likely causative protein truncating and missense variants in 7 novel and validated XLID genes (CLCN4, CNKSR2, FRMPD4, KLHL15, LAS1L, RLIM and USP27X) and potentially deleterious variants in 2 novel candidate XLID genes (CDK16 and TAF1). We show that the CLCN4 and CNKSR2 variants impair protein functions as indicated by electrophysiological studies and altered differentiation of cultured primary neurons from Clcn4(-/-) mice or after mRNA knock-down. The newly identified and candidate XLID proteins belong to pathways and networks with established roles in cognitive function and intellectual disability in particular. We suggest that systematic sequencing of all X-chromosomal genes in a cohort of patients with genetic evidence for X-chromosome locus involvement may resolve up to 58% of Fragile X-negative cases.

Abstract
Abstract
While a variety of technologies exist to measure proteins, such as ELISA’s, Mass Spec, and 2D Gel’s, the most promising for screening multiple proteins are biochip or microarray based technologies. However, even with biochip devices, measuring specific interactions between multiple protein combinations remains problematic. Proteins are complex and fragile bio-molecules and often interact in complex and unpredictable ways with other proteins and/or protein analysis equipment, causing non-specific (false) signals. Furthermore, many proteins of interest to the life science industry are present in samples at very different concentrations, limiting which proteins can be screened in a single multiplex test and sample dilution.
To address these problems, Inanovate has developed a new multiplexed protein quantification technology called Longitudinal Assay Screening (LAS), combining high sensitivity confocal imaging and microfluidics alongside protein based microarrays. Inanovate has completed testing and benchmarking of the first platform integrating LAS technology across a range of demonstration assays. Instead of depending on a 96-well micro-titer plate, the new LAS platform utilizes a glass slide based protein microarray and microfluidics for dispensing and binding samples and detection antibodies. In its most basic form, the protein microarray is composed of capture antibodies for the proteins being measured, as well as positive and negative quality control features for ensuring sample to sample, run to run, lot to lot, and user to user consistency. Conceptually very similar to a real-time PCR reaction, the LAS platform iteratively flows small volumes of sample and labeled detection antibodies across the protein microarray (housed on Inanovate’s fluidic cartridges) and fluorescently measures the formation of the sandwich between capture antibody, analyte of interest, and detection antibody in real-time.
Due to the time-resolved nature of the assay, the resulting data is a rate of reaction, instead of a simple final fluorescent reading. This ‘rate of reaction’ based analysis helps deliver the following core advantages of LAS technology, each of which has been demonstrated through the development and validation of a five-plex assay consisting of CRP, IL-6, IL-1a, IL-8 and IL-1b.
1. Large detection range: LAS enables the accurate quantitation of protein concentrations across a 7 log range in a single multiplex test. This eliminates the need for serial dilutions, making multiplexing faster, cheaper and helping preserve precious samples.
2. Multiplexing flexibility: Due to its large detection range, LAS allows users to run virtually any assay of interest in one test, enabling the development of biologically relevant multiplexes.
3. Improved accuracy: LAS produces and analyses real-time kinetic data on protein interactions (rate of reaction data), improving identification and discrimination of background and nonspecific signals, delivering more accurate quantitation at low analyte concentrations.
LAS technology holds the potential to become to proteomics what PCR was to genomics. It offers a new approach to multiplexed protein screening that helps address many of the problems presently affecting the utility of biochips in protein biomarker discovery, validation and clinical screening applications. The Poster will both summarize the technical components of the new LAS based platform and present data from the five-plex demonstration work plus recent work on serology assays.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Intracranial hemorrhage is the most serious outcome for brain arteriovenous malformations. This study examines associations between venous characteristics of these lesions and intracranial hemorrhage. MATERIALS AND METHODS Statistical analysis was performed on a prospectively maintained data base of brain AVMs evaluated at an academic medical center. DSA, CT, and MR imaging studies were evaluated to classify lesion side, drainage pattern, venous stenosis, number of draining veins, venous ectasia, and venous reflux. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the association of these angiographic features with intracranial hemorrhage of any age at initial presentation. RESULTS Exclusively deep drainage (OR, 3.42; 95% CI, 1.87-6.26; P < .001) and a single draining vein (OR, 1.98; 95% CI, 1.26-3.08; P = .002) were associated with hemorrhage, whereas venous ectasia (OR, 0.52; 95% CI, 0.34-0.78; P = .002) was inversely associated with hemorrhage. CONCLUSIONS Analysis of venous characteristics of brain AVMs may help determine their prognosis and thereby identify lesions most appropriate for treatment.

Abstract
Resistance thermometers are common secondary thermometers in cryogenic applications. Bulk RuO2 thermometers are used in dilution refrigerators because of their low magnetoresistances in addition to their temperature sensitivity. Thermoelectric and thermomagnetic measurements require multiple thermometers to measure temperature differences. Here, we present a method to fabricate thin film RuO2 thermometers directly onto an experimental substrate. This enhances thermal contact between thermometers and films whose thermoelectric or thermomagnetic properties may be measured. Commercial thermometers have higher temperature sensitivities than the thermometers presented in this study, but commercial thermometers must be carefully heat sunk to the cryostat or sample to be useful. Thin film thermometers can be patterned with ultraviolet (UV) lithography. This allows both the size of the thermometer and its distance from the sample, when also patterned with UV lithography, to be on the order of micrometers. A universal calibration curve for these thin film thermometers has not been produced. The efficacy of these thermometers has been demonstrated through measurements of the Nernst effect in Nb. In this study, the thin film thermometers were calibrated using the cryostat thermometers.

Abstract
We report on an experiment performing channeling and volume reflection of a high-energy electron beam using a quasimosaic, bent silicon (111) crystal at the End Station A Test Beam at SLAC. The experiment uses beams of 3.35 and 6.3 GeV. In the channeling orientation, deflections of the beam of 400 μrad for both energies with about 22% efficiency are observed, while in the volume-reflection orientation, deflection of the beam by 120 μrad at 3.35 GeV and by 80 μrad at 6.3 GeV is observed with 86%-95% efficiency. Quantitative measurements of the channeling efficiency, surface transmission, and dechanneling length are taken. These are the first quantitative measurements of channeling and volume reflection using a primary beam of multi-GeV electrons.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia is an autosomal dominant disease that presents in 10%-20% of patients with various brain vascular malformations. We aimed to report the radiologic features (phenotype) and the genotype-phenotype correlations of brain vascular malformations in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia. MATERIALS AND METHODS Demographic, clinical, genotypic, and imaging information of 75 patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia with brain arteriovenous malformations enrolled in the Brain Vascular Malformation Consortium from 2010 to 2012 were reviewed. RESULTS Nonshunting, small, superficially located conglomerates of enhancing vessels without enlarged feeding arteries or draining veins called "capillary vascular malformations" were the most commonly observed lesion (46 of 75 patients; 61%), followed by shunting "nidus-type" brain AVMs that were typically located superficially with a low Spetzler-Martin Grade and a small size (32 of 75 patients; 43%). Direct high-flow fistulous arteriovenous shunts were present in 9 patients (12%). Other types of vascular malformations (dural AVF and developmental venous anomalies) were present in 1 patient each. Multiplicity of vascular malformations was seen in 33 cases (44%). No statistically significant correlation was observed between hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia gene mutation and lesion type or lesion multiplicity. CONCLUSIONS Depending on their imaging features, brain vascular malformations in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia can be subdivided into brain AVF, nidus-type AVM, and capillary vascular malformations, with the latter being the most common phenotype in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia. No genotype-phenotype correlation was observed among patients with this condition.

Abstract
When distinguishing whether a face displays a certain emotion, some regions of the face may contain more useful information than others. Here we ask whether people differentially attend to distinct regions of a face when judging different emotions. Experiment 1 measured eye movements while participants discriminated between emotional (joy, anger, fear, sadness, shame, and disgust) and neutral facial expressions. Participant eye movements primarily fell in five distinct regions (eyes, upper nose, lower nose, upper lip, nasion). Distinct fixation patterns emerged for each emotion, such as a focus on the lips for joyful faces and a focus on the eyes for sad faces. These patterns were strongest for emotional faces but were still present when viewers sought evidence of emotion within neutral faces, indicating a goal-driven influence on eye-gaze patterns. Experiment 2 verified that these fixation patterns tended to reflect attention to the most diagnostic regions of the face for each emotion. Eye movements appear to follow both stimulus-driven and goal-driven perceptual strategies when decoding emotional information from a face.

Abstract
In this study, we employ a thiol-functionalized polymer (P3HT-SH) as a leverage to tailor the nanomorphology and electronic coupling in polymer-nanocrystal composites for hybrid solar cells. The presence of the thiol functional group allows for a highly crystalline semiconducting polymer film at low thiol content and allows for improved nanomorphologies in hybrid organic-inorganic systems when employing non-toxic bismuth sulfide nanocrystals. The exciton dissociation efficiency and carrier dynamics at this hybrid heterojunction are investigated through photoluminescence quenching and transient absorption spectroscopy measurements, revealing a larger degree of polaron formation when P3HT-SH is employed, suggesting an increased electronic interaction between the metal chalcogenide nanocrystals and the thiol-functionalized P3HT. The fabricated photovoltaic devices show 15% higher power conversion efficiencies as a result of the improved nanomorphology and better charge transfer mechanism together with the higher open circuit voltages arising from the deeper energy levels of P3HT-SH.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Emergent care of the acute heart attack patient continues to be at the forefront of quality and cost reduction strategies throughout the healthcare industry. Although the average cardiac door-to-balloon (D2B) times have decreased substantially over the past few years, there are still vast disparities found in D2B times in populations that reside in rural areas. Such disparities are mostly related to prolonged travel time and subsequent delays in cardiac catherization lab team activation. Urban ambulance companies that are routinely staffed with paramedic level providers have been successful in the implementation of pre-hospital 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) protocols as a strategy to reduce D2B times. METHOD The authors sought to evaluate the evidence related to the risk and benefits associated with the replication of an ECG transmission protocol in a small rural emergency medical service. The latter is staffed with emergency medical technician-basics (EMT-B), emergency medical technician-advanced (EMT-A), and emergency medical technician-intermediate (EMT-I) level. RESULTS The evidence reviewed was limited to studies with relevant data regarding the challenges and complexities of the ECG transmission process, the difficulties associated with ECG transmission in rural settings, and ECG transmission outcomes by provider level. CONCLUSIONS The evidence supports additional research to further evaluate the feasibility of ECG transmission at the non-paramedic level. Multiple variables must be investigated including equipment cost, utilization, and rural transmission capabilities. Clearly, pre-hospital ECG transmission and early activation of the cardiac catheterization laboratory are critical components to successfully decreasing D2B times.

Abstract
Donor-derived Strongyloides stercoralis infections in transplant recipients are a rare but recognized complication. In this case series, we report donor-derived allograft transmission of Strongyloides in three solid organ transplant recipients. Following detection of infection in heart and kidney-pancreas recipients at two different transplant centers, a third recipient from the same donor was identified and diagnosed. S. stercoralis larvae were detected in duodenal aspirates, bronchial washings, cerebrospinal fluid, urine and stool specimens. Treatment with ivermectin and albendazole was successful in two of the three patients identified. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was contacted and performed an epidemiologic investigation. Donor serology was strongly positive for S. stercoralis antibodies on retrospective testing while all pretransplant recipient serum was negative. There should be a high index of suspicion for parasitic infection in transplant recipients and donors from endemic regions of the world. This case series underscores the need for expanded transplant screening protocols for Strongyloides. Positive serologic or stool tests should prompt early treatment or prophylaxis in donors and recipients as well as timely notification of organ procurement organizations and transplant centers.

Abstract
Solar cells based on conjugated polymer and fullerene blends have been developed as a low-cost alternative to silicon. For efficient solar cells, electron-hole pairs must separate into free mobile charges that can be extracted in high yield. We still lack good understanding of how, why and when carriers separate against the Coulomb attraction. Here we visualize the charge separation process in bulk heterojunction solar cells by directly measuring charge carrier drift in a polymer:fullerene blend with ultrafast time resolution. We show that initially only closely separated (<1 nm) charge pairs are created and they separate by several nanometres during the first several picoseconds. Charge pairs overcome Coulomb attraction and form free carriers on a subnanosecond time scale. Numerical simulations complementing the experimental data show that fast three-dimensional charge diffusion within an energetically disordered medium, increasing the entropy of the system, is sufficient to drive the charge separation process.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Investigate a role for calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in osteoarthritis (OA)-related pain. DESIGN Neutralizing antibodies to CGRP were generated de novo. One of these antibodies, LY2951742, was characterized in vitro and tested in pre-clinical in vivo models of OA pain. RESULTS LY2951742 exhibited high affinity to both human and rat CGRP (KD of 31 and 246 pM, respectively). The antibody neutralized CGRP-mediated induction of cAMP in SK-N-MC cells in vitro and capsaicin-induced dermal blood flow in the rat. Neutralization of CGRP significantly reduced pain behavior as measured by weight bearing differential in the rat monoiodoacetate model of OA pain in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, pain reduction with neutralization of CGRP occurred independently of prostaglandins, since LY2951742 and NSAIDs worked additively in the NSAID-responsive version of the model and CGRP neutralization remained effective in the NSAID non-responsive version of the model. Neutralization of CGRP also provided dose-dependent and prolonged (>60 days) pain reduction in the rat meniscal tear model of OA after only a single injection of LY2951742. CONCLUSIONS LY2951742 is a high affinity, neutralizing antibody to CGRP. Neutralization of CGRP is efficacious in several OA pain models and works independently of NSAID mechanisms of action. LY2951742 holds promise for the treatment of pain in OA patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The imaging characteristics and modes of presentation of brain AVMs may vary with patient age. Our aim was to determine whether clinical and angioarchitectural features of brain AVMs differ between children and adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS A prospectively collected institutional data base of all patients diagnosed with brain AVMs since 2001 was queried. Demographic, clinical, and angioarchitecture information was summarized and analyzed with univariable and multivariable models. RESULTS Results often differed when age was treated as a continuous variable as opposed to dividing subjects into children (18 years or younger; n = 203) versus adults (older than 18 years; n = 630). Children were more likely to present with AVM hemorrhage than adults (59% versus 41%, P < .001). Although AVMs with a larger nidus presented at younger ages (mean of 26.8 years for >6 cm compared with 37.1 years for <3 cm), this feature was not significantly different between children and adults (P = .069). Exclusively deep venous drainage was more common in younger subjects when age was treated continuously (P = .04) or dichotomized (P < .001). Venous ectasia was more common with increasing age (mean, 39.4 years with ectasia compared with 31.1 years without ectasia) and when adults were compared with children (52% versus 35%, P < .001). Patients with feeding artery aneurysms presented at a later average age (44.1 years) than those without such aneurysms (31.6 years); this observation persisted when comparing children with adults (13% versus 29%, P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Although children with brain AVMs were more likely to come to clinical attention due to hemorrhage than adults, venous ectasia and feeding artery aneurysms were under-represented in children, suggesting that these particular high-risk features take time to develop.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Low blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) have been associated with cardiometabolic disease but results are inconsistent. The objective of the study was to investigate the association of 25OHD with metabolic syndrome in a population at increased risk for diabetes. SUBJECTS/METHODS Using baseline data from the placebo and lifestyle intervention arms of the Diabetes Prevention Program (N=2000), multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds of prevalent metabolic syndrome and each of its individual components across 25OHD tertiles. Multivariable linear regression was used to estimate the adjusted mean difference of insulin secretion and sensitivity across the same 25OHD tertiles. In participants free of metabolic syndrome at baseline (N=546), incident metabolic syndrome in the first 2 years of follow-up was assessed using discrete-time proportional hazards regression to test its association with 25OHD concentration. RESULTS After multivariate adjustment, participants in the highest tertile of 25OHD had lower odds of prevalent metabolic syndrome (odds ratio=0.62; 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.45-0.84), smaller waist circumference, higher high-density lipoprotein and lower fasting plasma glucose compared with participants in the lowest tertile of 25OHD. Higher plasma 25OHD concentration was associated with greater insulin sensitivity and lower insulin secretion. After multivariate adjustment, there was a nonsignificant lower risk of metabolic syndrome in the highest tertile of 25OHD (hazard ratio=0.79; 95% CI=0.48-1.32) compared with the lowest tertile. CONCLUSIONS In a population at increased risk for diabetes, higher plasma 25OHD concentration was inversely associated with prevalent metabolic syndrome and nonsignificantly with incident metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
A novel scheme for the focusing of high-energy leptons in future linear colliders was proposed in 2001 [P. Raimondi and A. Seryi, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 3779 (2001)]. This scheme has many advantageous properties over previously studied focusing schemes, including being significantly shorter for a given energy and having a significantly better energy bandwidth. Experimental results from the ATF2 accelerator at KEK are presented that validate the operating principle of such a scheme by demonstrating the demagnification of a 1.3 GeV electron beam down to below 65 nm in height using an energy-scaled version of the compact focusing optics designed for the ILC collider.

Abstract
BACKGROUND GAMT deficiency is an autosomal recessive disorder of creatine biosynthesis resulting in severe neurological complications in untreated patients. Currently available treatment is only successful to stop disease progression, but is not sufficient to reverse neurological complications occurring prior to diagnosis. Normal neurodevelopmental outcome in a patient, treated in the newborn period, highlights the importance of early diagnosis. METHODS Targeted mutation analysis (c.59G>C and c.327G>A) in the GAMT gene by the QIAxcel system and GAA measurement by a novel two-tier method were performed in 3000 anonymized newborn blood dot spot cards. RESULTS None of the targeted mutations were detected in any newborn. Two novel heterozygous variants (c.283_285dupGTC; p.Val95dup and c.278_283delinsCTCGATGCAC; p.Asp93AlafsX35) were identified by coincidence. Carrier frequency for these insertion/deletion types of GAMT mutations was 1/1475 in this small cohort of newborns. GAA levels were at or above the 99th percentile (3.12 μmol/l) in 4 newborns. Second-tier testing showed normal results for 4 newborns revealing 0.1% false positive rate. No GAMT mutations were identified in 4 of the newborns with elevated GAA levels in the first tier testing. CONCLUSION This is the first two-tier study to investigate carrier frequency of GAMT deficiency in the small cohort of newborn population to establish evidence base for the first steps toward newborn screening for this treatable neurometabolic disorder.

Abstract
In a sample of 240 juvenile field voles 8% of the males and 22% of the females reached sexual maturity within their natal home range. Among individuals retrapped as adults, 58% of males and 23% of females had dispersed, i.e. had moved more than one home range diameter. The mean distance moved for males (58.5 m) exceeded that for females (28.6 m). Male movement distances were negatively associated with total density, and with density of adult females, but not with male density. Female movements were not related to population density. There were no relation between sex ratio and distance moved. The distribution of distances moved for both males and females fit a geometrical distribution, suggesting the importance of competitive processes.

Abstract
We report generation of density modulation at terahertz (THz) frequencies in a relativistic electron beam through laser modulation of the beam longitudinal phase space. We show that by modulating the energy distribution of the beam with two lasers, density modulation at the difference frequency of the two lasers can be generated after the beam passes through a chicane. In this experiment, density modulation around 10 THz was generated by down-converting the frequencies of an 800 nm laser and a 1550 nm laser. The central frequency of the density modulation can be tuned by varying the laser wavelengths, beam energy chirp, or momentum compaction of the chicane. This technique can be applied to accelerator-based light sources for generation of coherent THz radiation and marks a significant advance toward tunable narrow band THz sources.

Abstract
Saliva plays a major role in maintaining oral health. Patients afflicted with a decrease in saliva secretion (symptomatically, xerostomia) exhibit difficulty in chewing and swallowing foods, tooth decay, periodontal disease, and microbial infections. Despite recent improvements in treating xerostomia (e.g., saliva stimulants, saliva substitutes, and gene therapy), there is a need of more scientific advancements that can be clinically applied toward restoration of compromised salivary gland function. Here we provide a summary of the current salivary cell models that have been used to advance restorative treatments via development of an artificial salivary gland. These models represent initial steps toward clinical and translational research, to facilitate creation of clinically safe salivary glands. Further studies in salivary cell lines and primary cells are necessary to improve survival rates, cell differentiation, and secretory function. Additionally, the characterization of salivary progenitor and stem cell markers are necessary. Although these models are not fully characterized, their improvement may lead to the construction of an artificial salivary gland that is in high demand for improving the quality of life of many patients suffering from salivary secretory dysfunction.

Abstract
The evolution with thickness of the properties of quench-deposited homogeneous amorphous bismuth (a-Bi) thin films with a 14.67 Å amorphous antimony (a-Sb) underlayer has been studied. In contrast with the results of previous investigations on similar systems the transition between the insulating and superconducting regimes is not direct, but involves an intervening metallic regime over a range of thicknesses. For these metallic films the temperature dependencies of the resistances at temperatures above the metallic regime can be described by the Halperin-Nelson form suggesting the occurrence of a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition at lower temperatures. However, this transition never occurs as curves of R(T) flatten out as temperature is reduced. We suggest that this phenomenon is evidence of a crossover between a classical regime of thermal vortex unbinding at high temperatures and a regime of macroscopic quantum tunneling at low temperatures. The latter prevents the BKT transition from occurring.

Abstract
The occurrence of magnetic domain memory has been observed in ferromagnets, either induced by structural defects or by exchange couplings. Being able to quantify the amount of memory as a function of length scale, field and temperature is both of fundamental and technological importance. A technique has been refined to statistically quantify the magnetic domain memory in ferromagnetic thin films by using coherent soft-X-ray scattering metrology. This technique, based on cross-correlating magnetic speckle patterns, provides a unique way to map out the behavior of domain memory. Here, the details of our correlation method and the necessary treatment of the X-ray scattering images to extract spatial and field dependences in the memory information are reviewed. The resulting correlation maps, measured on [Co/Pd]IrMn multilayers, show how magnetic domain memory evolves at various spatial scales, as a function of the field magnitude throughout magnetization cycles, but also as a function of field cycling and of temperature. This technique can easily be applied to a wide variety of systems presenting memory effects, in soft and hard matter, and also to dynamical studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Substantial geographical clustering of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) outbreaks in hospitals in the USA have previously been demonstrated. AIM To test the hypothesis that hospital burden of CDI is associated with admission from and discharge to long-term care facilities (LTCFs). METHODS Hospital discharge data from 19 states in the USA were used to identify all patients discharged with a diagnosis of CDI from 1 January 2002 to 31 December 2004. For every hospital, the proportion of discharges with a diagnosis of CDI was calculated, and those above the 90th percentile were classified as 'high CDI' hospitals. We tested the association between this measure of hospital burden of CDI and the rates of admission from and discharges to LTCFs. We adjusted for other hospital level characteristics, case-complexity and local population characteristics. FINDINGS We identified 38,372,951 discharges during the three-year study period. Of all discharges, 274,311 (0.71%) had a primary or secondary diagnosis of CDI. Hospitals had a mean CDI burden of 7.8 cases per 1000 discharges. High CDI hospitals (N = 610; 10.0%) had a mean CDI burden of 34.8 cases per 1000 discharges. Compared to other hospitals, high CDI hospitals were more likely to have a high proportion of admissions from or discharges to LTCFs. This association persisted after adjustments for other hospital characteristics, case-complexity, and area population characteristics. CONCLUSION A high rate of admission from or discharge to LTCFs is associated with an increased hospital burden of CDI.
