Abstract
Biomarkers of infection were screened for their possible role as evaluators of antibiotic treatment in an aerosol infection model of porcine pneumonia caused by Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (Ap). Following infection of 12 pigs, clinical signs of pneumonia developed within 20 h, whereafter the animals received a single dose of either danofloxacin (2.5mg/kg) or tiamulin (10 mg/kg). To test the discriminative properties of the biomarkers, the dosage regimens were designed with an expected difference in therapeutic efficacy in favour of danofloxacin. Accordingly, the danofloxacin-treated pigs recovered clinically within 24h after treatment, whereas tiamulin-treated animals remained clinically ill until the end of the study, 48 h after treatment. A similar picture was seen for the biomarkers of infection. During the infection period, plasma C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 and haptoglobin increased, whereas plasma zinc, ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol decreased. In the danofloxacin-treated animals, CRP, interleukin-6, zinc, ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol reverted significantly towards normalisation within 24h of treatment. In contrast, signs of normalisation were absent (CRP, zinc and ascorbic acid) or less marked (interleukin-6 and alpha-tocopherol) in the tiamulin-treated animals. Plasma haptoglobin remained elevated throughout the study in both groups. This indicates that CRP, zinc, ascorbic acid and to a lesser extent interleukin-6 and alpha-tocopherol might be used to evaluate antibiotic treatment of acute Ap-infection in pigs. The present model provides a valuable tool in the evaluation of antibiotic treatments, offering the advantage of clinical and pathological examinations combined with the use of biochemical infection markers.

Abstract
Our aims were to evaluate the published literature concerning the effect of swine vaccination against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae on the average daily weight gain (ADWG). This was done by re-evaluating the influence of selected factors on ADWG by a meta-analysis of published studies from 1991 to 1999, fulfilling certain inclusion criteria. With ADWG as the outcome, an analysis of variance was performed for such variables as treatment, vaccination schedule, age during study, housing system and publication quality. Each clinical trial was considered as a random effect and the numbers of pigs in each trial were weightings. Of 63 published studies, 16 describing three commercial vaccines fulfilled the criteria for the meta-analysis. Due to few studies with one of the vaccines (n=3), only two vaccines were included. Vaccinated pigs gained an average of 592g (S.E.=15) with Stellamune and 590g (S.E.=15) with Suvaxyne compared to non-vaccinated pigs that gained an average of 569g (S.E.=14)(P<0.01) when adjusted for age during the study. Vaccine type, vaccination schedule, housing system and publication quality were not significantly associated with ADWG.

Abstract
A case-control study of 340 finishing pigs aged 10 to 25 weeks in 15 commercial Danish pig herds was carried out to investigate serum haptoglobin concentration as an objective marker of clinical signs of disease. Pigs with different clinical signs were matched to control pigs without clinical signs with respect to herd, pen, estimated weight and gender, and each pig was subjected to a standard clinical examination. In 86 of the case-control pairs, the rectal temperature was also recorded. There was a significantly higher mean haptoglobin concentration in the serum of lame pigs (P<0.0001), pigs with respiratory disease (P=0.0004), pigs with tail or ear bites (P=0.0004) and pigs with diarrhoea (P=0.02). Similarly, a higher mean rectal temperature was recorded in lame pigs (P<0.0001), pigs with respiratory disease (P=0.002) and pigs with tail or ear bites (P=0.0003). There was a significant but low correlation between rectal temperature and haptoglobin concentration in serum (P=0.003, r=0.20). The area under the receiver-operating-characteristic curve was between 0.67 and 0.78 for the different clinical signs. The maximum simultaneous levels of sensitivity (0.61 to 0.71) and specificity (0.61 to 0.77) of serum haptoglobin for the different clinical signs were obtained at a cut-off value of 1.1 mg/ml. At a cut-off value of 1.8 mg/ml, the sensitivity decreased to 0.31 to 0.60, and the specificity increased to 0.82 to 0.86. It was not possible to define a cut-off value which classified individual pigs according to their clinical signs.

Abstract
An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for quantification of haptoglobin in porcine serum was evaluated. The detection limit when expressed as the estimated concentration of a blank sample was 0.0003 mg/ml. The precision of the assay was acceptable with intra-assay coefficients of variation below 4% and inter-assay coefficient of variation below 5% for serum concentrations ranging from 1.0 mg/ml and above. For samples with a concentration below 0.8 mg/ml, the inter-assay coefficient of variation was above 10% The assay maintained linearity under dilution. Recovery was proportional. Haemolysis significantly decreased the measured concentration of haptoglobin in paired serum samples (one-sided t-test, P < 0.0001, degrees of freedom = 29). No significant effect on the concentration due to repeated freezing and thawing of serum was observed. The biological variation in individual pigs with no clinical signs of disease was estimated by nested analysis of variance. Between-pig variation was 86.0% within-pig variation was 13.3% and analytical variation was 0.7%. The one-sided critical difference was 12.3% and the two-sided critical difference was 14.6%. The index of individuality was 0.2. The maximum allowable analytical imprecision was 2.6% and the maximum analytical inaccuracy was 9.9%. The number of samples required to determine the true haptoglobin value in an individual pig when accounting for the day-to-day fluctuation was 5. In conclusion, the haptoglobin assay was found to be suitable for quantification of haptoglobin in non-haemolysed porcine serum samples with a haptoglobin concentration above 1.0 mg/ml. The analytical variance was found to be low. The haptoglobin concentration in serum was found to characterize individual animals. A large inter-animal variation in haptoglobin level was found.

Abstract
Our aim was to determine risk factors for subclinical Salmonella enterica infection in Danish finishing-pig herds. In this paper, the evaluation, combining and initial reduction of variables is presented, along with assessment of the hypotheses in the preliminary statistical testing. The first group of herds was selected at random with no former knowledge of S. enterica infection. Both the herd prevalence and the within-herd prevalence among these herds turned out to be low; hence, some additional herds were selected from The Danish Salmonella Control program, based on their high seroprevalence. This resulted in a hybrid case-"control" design of the study and therefore, five different methods of categorising the data were used to ensure that variables were not wrongfully excluded as a result of using an improper design. Our questionnaire focused on management, infection-limiting precautions and feed and feeding procedures. To establish the prevalence of S. enterica infection within herds at the time of the visit, 50 blood samples from each herd were collected and serologically examined. The reliability of each variable from the questionnaire was assessed and it was decided which variables should be selected, disregarded, combined with other variables and/or recoded. In the simple statistical testing (2x2 tables, cut-off: P=0.25) herds were defined as subclinically S. enterica infected if the within-herd proportion of individual pigs with OD%>10 was more than 20%. The results included questionnaires from 96 randomly selected and 39 high-seroprevalence herds and 6814 blood samples. The initial 95 variables originally included in the questionnaires were reduced to 21 by critical check, combination, recoding and preliminary screening. We failed to demonstrate "herd size" as a risk factor for subclinical S. enterica infection in pig herds.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution of amoxicillin in healthy and Salmonella Typhimurium-inoculated pigs. ANIMALS 12 healthy pigs and 12 S Typhimurium-inoculated pigs. PROCEDURE Concentration of amoxicillin in tissue was measured by use of high-performance liquid chromatography 4, 8, 12, and 24 hours after IM administration. Pharmacokinetic values of amoxicillin in plasma were assessed by use of a 1-compartment model with first-order absorption. RESULTS Inoculation caused diarrhea and increased rectal temperature and WBC count. Absorption half-life was shorter in inoculated pigs (0.26 hours) than in healthy pigs (0.71 hours), and inoculated pigs had longer elimination half-life. Distribution ratios in healthy pigs ranged from 0.31 to 0.56 and in inoculated pigs ranged from 0.14 to 0.48. Ratios for distribution to intestinal mucosa ranged from 0.34 to 1.16 in healthy pigs and from 0.22 to 0.36 in inoculated pigs. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Salmonella Typhimurium inoculation altered absorption of amoxicillin from the injection site and prolonged elimination half-life. However, distribution of amoxicillin to intestinal tract tissue was only affected to a minor degree.

Abstract
The genetic variability of a gene coding for an outer membrane lipoprotein (omlA) was used to develop a PCR typing system for Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae. Sequence differences in the middle region of the gene divided the A. pleuropneumoniae serotypes in five distinct groups. Group I included serotypes 1, 9, 11 and 12 (omlA l), Group II consisted of serotypes 2 and 8 (omlA II), Group III included serotypes 3, 6 and 7 (omlA III), Group IV (omlA IV) consisted of serotype 4 and Group V of serotypes 5a, 5b and 10 (omlA V). The sequence differences were utilized to construct PCR primers specific for each group, except of Group IV, as the amplicon of serotype 4 could be separated from Group III by size. Together with a PCR apx typing system, the omlA PCR typing system could discriminate the majority of A. pleuropneumoniae serotypes of biovar 1 except of serotypes 1, 9 and 11 and serotypes 2 and 8. The PCR typing system was tested on 102 field strains of A. pleuropneumoniae isolated from lungs of diseased pigs. The serotyping results of the investigated field strains were in agreement with the apx and omlA gene patterns found in the reference strains of the bacteria, with the exception of the omlA gene of five strains of serotype 8. To examine the apx and omlA gene pattern of tonsil isolates, the PCR typing system was tested on a total of 280 A. pleuropneumoniae field strains isolated from tonsils of pigs. Agreement between serotyping and DNA typing was found in 96% of the isolates using the apx gene patterns and in 89% of the isolates using the omlA gene. The same serotype specific apx/omlA gene pattern was thus found in the majority of the tonsil isolates and in isolates from diseased lungs. Most of the differences in the omlA gene were found in 18 tonsil isolates of serotype 12. The omlA/apx PCR typing system described in the present study makes it possible to determine the type specificity of the majority of A. pleuropneumoniae isolates by simple PCR technique and enables phenotype independent characterization of isolates non-typable by serotyping.

Abstract
Sixteen litters of seven pigs from each of nine Danish farrow-to-finish herds were followed to investigate the serological patterns caused by natural infection with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida toxin and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae serotypes 2, 5-7, 12. In seven of the herds, pigs were followed as two separate cohorts started 4 weeks apart, and in two herds only one cohort was followed.A total of 999 pigs were included in the study. The pigs were blood sampled at weaning and subsequently every fourth week until slaughter. All pigs were examined for antibodies against M. hyopneumoniae (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), P. multocida toxin (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) and A. pleuropneumoniae serotypes 2, 5-7, 12 (complement-fixation tests). The most-common pattern (28%) of seroconversion was that of pigs first seroconverting to A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 2, followed by seroconversion to M. hyopneumoniae. Each herd had a dominant serotype of A. pleuropneumoniae to which most pigs seroconverted. Seroconversion to the respiratory pathogens occurred mainly in the growing-to-finishing units (8-24 weeks). The risk of seroconversion to the P. multocida toxin was very low (<20%) and occurred late.None, four and seven herds tested seropositive to PRRS and to swine influenza virus subtypes H3N2 and H1N1, respectively, when testing 10 pigs per herd (selected randomly among the study pigs) at the age of 20 weeks.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to confirm a clinical suspicion that the frequency of this disease is in decline. A retrospective review of case notes of all children admitted and operated in all hospitals in Viborg County during the period of 1.1.1973 to 31.12.1997 was performed. The local survey was supplemented with a national survey. One hundred and forty-seven patients from Viborg County were operated for infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis during the period described. Divided into five year periods the number per 1000 living births was consecutively 1.6, 2.4, 2.0, 2.8 and 0.9. The same tendency was found nationally, Table 1. The decrease started in 1993 and has since strengthened. The reason is unknown, but there is a relation regarding to the timing of a change in recommendations concerning positioning of infants during sleep. However, a causal relation is unknown.

Abstract
In order to investigate an apparent decline in the incidence of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS), all cases of IHPS from 1973-1997 in the county of Viborg were studied retrospectively. One hundred and fourty-seven patients were found, with a significant decrease in incidence in the last five year period. Ninety-two percent were males, 14% had a family history of IHPS. Eleven percent had a birthweight < 2500 g, as opposed to 5-6% in the normal population. Pyloric stenosis presents in one to four weeks after birth in 70% and in 5-12 weeks in 28%. The diagnosis was reached solely through the the clinical picture in 105 cases. Twenty-three were examined with upper gastrointestinal radiography, six were false negative, abdominal ultrasound was performed in 21 cases and was false negative in four. Five patients were reoperated because of an inadequate first operation. Postoperative complications with wound infections were seen in eight patients. A high degree of accuracy of diagnosis can only be achieved through the clinical picture.

Abstract
The pharmacokinetics and penetration of danofloxacin into the gastrointestinal tract in healthy pigs and in pigs experimentally infected with Salmonella typhimurium were studied. In the infected pigs, a decrease in body clearance and an increase in mean elimination half-life was observed (P < 0.01). Moreover a significant reduction in the volume of the peripheral compartment was found. Danofloxacin distributed well to the gastrointestinal tract achieving high AUC / AUC(plasma)ratios in both groups of pigs. However, compared to the healthy pigs AUC / AUC(plasma)ratios decreased in the infected pigs. Salmonella infection led to an increase in mean residence time (MRT) in the small intestines and lymph nodes and a decrease in MRT in caecum and colon.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The study aimed to prove or disprove a clinical suspicion of a decreasing frequency of pyloric stenosis. METHOD Retrospective review of hospital records of all children operated for pyloric stenosis in the hospitals of the County of Viborg from 1 January 1973 to 31 December 1997. This regional review was supplemented by a nationwide study, in which the National Registry of Patients was searched for the diagnosis number and the operation code of pyloric stenosis during the period 1 January 1977 to 31 December 1997. RESULTS One hundred and forty-seven children were operated for infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis in Viborg County during the period in question. When calculated in five-year periods, the respective numbers per 1000 liveborn children were: 1.6, 2.4, 2.0, 2.8, and 0.9. Only one child was operated per year during 1996 and 1997, compared with an average of seven children annually during the preceding 20 years. The same tendency was found in the nationwide study. Until 1993 an average of 160 children were operated per year, i.e. 2.2 to 3.2 per 1000 liveborn children. From 1993-1997 inclusive the number decreased to 1.4. In 1996 and 1997, respectively, 75 and 76 children were operated, i.e. 1.1 per 1000 liveborn children. CONCLUSION There has been a significant decrease in the incidence of children with infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, both in the County of Viborg and in the whole of Denmark. The decrease, which started in 1993, has for unknown reasons continued to accelerate ever since. The decrease coincides with changing recommendations concerning the positioning of infants during sleep, but a causal connection is uncertain.

Abstract
Our aim was to determine the Salmonella enterica prevalence in 96 randomly selected Danish pig herds, based on serological examination of blood samples and bacteriological examination of faecal samples (collected simultaneously from the same pens). For comparison, 39 high-seroprevalence herds were included in the study. The representativeness of the selected herds was assessed, based on descriptive statistics of herd size and type. Totals of 1330 pen samples and 6814 blood samples were examined.The results from the meat-juice screening in the Danish S. enterica Control Programme were available for 3372 meat-juice samples from 91 of the 96 randomly selected herds and 1195 meat-juice samples from 37 of the 39 high-seroprevalence herds. Of the 96 randomly selected herds, 23 herds had no positive pen samples (out of 10), no positive blood samples (out of 50) and no positive meat-juice samples (out of approximately 30-40 samples in 6 months). Ten herds had one or more positive meat-juice samples but were otherwise negative. S. Typhimurium was isolated from 30 of the 39 high-seroprevalence herds. Our conclusions were: (1) The within-herd seroprevalence among the 96 randomly selected Danish pig herds was low (average within-herd seroprevalence=2%, maximum=32%). (2) Among the 39 high-seroprevalence herds (recently assigned level 3 in the S. enterica Control Programme), S. enterica was isolated from 77% of the herds when 10 pen samples were examined bacteriologically. (3) Seropositivity tended to be related to the presence of S. Typhimurium.

Abstract
The objective of this experimental study was to determine the effects of aerial ammonia on disease development and bacterial colonization in weaned pigs inoculated with toxigenic Pasteurella multocida and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. Two groups of 10 pigs each were continuously exposed to 50 and 100 p.p.m. ammonia, respectively, and compared to a non-exposed control group of 20 pigs. Following aerosol inoculation with M. hyopneumoniae at day 9, all pigs were aerosol-inoculated with toxigenic P. multocida type A at days 28, 42 and 56. At day 63 they were euthanized. Clinical signs including coughing and respiratory distress were present in all groups following inoculation. No significant differences could be established in the extent or frequency of pneumonia between ammonia-exposed pigs and controls, or in the extent of conchal atrophy, the frequency of isolation of toxigenic P. multocida from conchae, tonsils, lungs and kidneys, or the average daily weight gain. The recovery of toxigenic P. multocida from nasal swabs following inoculation was significantly greater in pigs exposed to 50 p.p.m. ammonia or more as compared to the control group. In conclusion, high levels of ammonia combined with inoculations with M. hyopneumoniae and toxigenic P. multocida had no significant effect on disease development, but may have enhanced colonization by toxigenic P. multocida on the nasal turbinates.

Abstract
The reference strains of the 12 serotypes of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae express one or two of three different RTX exotoxins designated Apx I, Apx II and Apx III. The toxins are important virulence factors. In the present study, ELISAs with purified Apx I, Apx II and Apx III, respectively, as antigen were evaluated as candidates for serological diagnosis of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae infection in pigs. The pigs were inoculated with biotype 1, serotypes 1-12, and biotype 2, serotype 14, respectively. A strong humoral antibody response was seen to all the three antigens in most pigs irrespective of the serotype used for inoculation. However, titers to the exotoxins secreted by the serotype used for inoculation were generally highest. The results show that toxin proteins of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae are antigenically related and that a correlation between serotype and secretion of exotoxin is not revealed serologically in the ELISA test.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate capsular-typing, plasmid-profiling, phage-typing and ribotyping for epidemiological studies of toxin-producing Pasteurella multocida ssp. multocida in Denmark. The evaluation of methods was based on 68 strains from nasal swabs and 14 strains from pneumonic lungs. Strains from lungs were all of capsular Type A, whereas strains from nasal swabs were of both capsular Types A and D. Only 9% of the strains contained plasmids, which could not be associated with antibiotic resistance. Phage-typing divided 61% of strains into 10 groups, while 39% were non-typable. CfoI ribotyping divided strains into four groups of which one type contained 94% of isolates. HindIII ribotyping divided strains into 18 types. A total of 18 strains from The Netherlands, UK and USA were subjected to HindIII ribotyping, resulting in 13 types of which six were identical to ribotypes of Danish strains. Phage-typing of isolates from an outbreak of atrophic rhinitis involving six herds in 1985 showed the existence of an epidemic strain. This type was recognised in the herd suspected of being the source of the infections and in four of the five infected herds. These findings were supported by HindIII ribotyping, as 85% of isolates from all herds were assigned to one ribotype. In conclusion, HindIII ribotyping seems to represent a useful tool for epidemiological studies of toxigenic P. multocida ssp. multocida.

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to present the results of the perinatal audit in Viborg County during the years 1994-1996. The perinatal deaths in Viborg County were classified according to commonly used classifications in perinatal audit evaluations, and mortality rates were calculated according to international definitions and compared with data from the Danish National Birth Register, 1995. During 1994-1996 the perinatal mortality rate decreased from 9.4/1000 deliveries to 6.5/1000 deliveries and the neonatal mortality rate decreased from 3.2/1000 deliveries to 2.4/1000 deliveries. The reductions were not statistically significant. No significant difference in mortality rates between Viborg County and overall national mortality rates in 1995 was shown.

Abstract
The objective of the experimental study was to examine whether aerial ammonia alone could predispose the respiratory system of pigs to infection with toxigenic Pasteurella multocida type A. Two groups of 5 pigs each were continuously exposed to 50 ppm ammonia and less than 5 ppm ammonia, respectively, for a 59-day period (from 37 kg to 90 kg bodyweight) followed by necropsy. In an aerosol chamber all pigs were exposed to an aerosol of toxigenic P. multocida type A (mean bacterial concentration in the aerosol-exposure chamber: 10(5) colony forming units/m3; exposure period: 25 min) at day 10, 21, 35 and 49 after the onset of ammonia exposure. During the experiment none of the pigs showed clinical signs of pneumonia nor did they develop visible distortion of the snout. None of the pigs had gross lesions in the lungs at necropsy and toxigenic P. multocida was not detected by culture from the lungs from any of the pigs. The chance of recovering toxigenic P. multocida from nasal swabs (collected during experiment) was 2-4 times greater in the test group compared to the control group. The average daily weight gain was lower for the ammonia exposed pigs compared to the control group. In conclusion the results from this study suggest that ammonia in concentrations of 50 ppm is unlikely to predispose growing pigs to pulmonary infection with toxigenic P. multocida.

Abstract
The pharmokinetic properties of amoxycillin, and its penetration into respiratory tract tissue, were determined in 18 Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae infected pigs, after a single i.v. dose of 8.6 mg amoxycillin kg(-1) bodyweight. Pleuropneumoniae was produced experimentally in pigs by an aerosol infection model. The infection created a homogeneous response, characterised by depression of breathing and increased body temperature. The clinical symptoms were accompanied by increased haptoglobin levels and circulating white blood cell counts. At necropsy the findings were characterised by a bilateral fibrinous pleuropneumonia. Twenty hours after infection, the pigs were administered amoxycillin i.v. The plasma concentration-time curve was described by a three compartment open model. The mean residence time and the elimination half-life were 1.5 and 3.4 hours, respectively. The steady-state volume of distribution was 0.67 litres kg(-1), and the clearance was 0.46 litres kg(-1) hour(-1). There were no significant differences between these values and those reported previously for healthy pigs. The concentration of amoxycillin in bronchial secretions, lung tissue and diseased lung tissue peaked two hours after intravenous drug administration, while amoxycillin concentration in pleural fluid, lymph nodes and tonsil tissue peaked at the first sampling point one hour after drug administration. The concentration of amoxycillin in secretions and tissue decreased by a slower rate than amoxycillin concentration in plasma, resulting in an increasing tissue-to-plasma concentration ratio. The distribution ratios (AUCtissue/AUCplasma) was 0.53 for bronchial secretions, 0.44 for pneumonic lung tissue, 0.42 for lung tissue, 1.04 for pleural fluid, 0.58 for lymph nodes and 0.37 for tonsil tissue. The distribution of amoxycillin to secretions was increased compared with that previously reported for healthy pigs, while only minor changes were observed in lung tissue.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate ribotyping as an epidemiological tool for Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae and apply the method in studies of A. pleuropneumoniae infections in Danish pig herds. The evaluation of ribotyping was based on the 13 international reference strains and 106 epidemiologically unrelated Danish field strains representing the nine serotypes of biotype 1 (1, 2, 5A/B, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, and K2:O7) and one serotype 14 of biotype 2. Enzymes CfoI and HindIII were chosen for generation of ribotype patterns. Ribotyping of the reference strains resulted in 10 CfoI types and 11 HindIII types. Ribotyping of the Danish strains resulted in 17 different CfoI ribotypes and 24 different HindIII ribotypes. Combining HindIII- and CfoI-ribotyping divided the Danish strains into 26 different types. The stability, reproducibility and typability of ribotype patterns were good, and the discriminatory power was between 0.85-0.89. The relatively low discriminatory power was caused by four predominant types, containing 61% of the isolates. The typing system was applied in studies of routes of infection of specific pathogen-free (SPF) pig herds and included 112 strains of A. pleuropneumoniae. Airborne transmission from neighboring conventional pig farms was investigated in 12 cases of infected SPF herds. Transmission via vehicles transporting pigs between SPF herds was investigated in nine cases while transmission by trading of pigs between SPF herds was investigated in two cases. Serotype 2 was isolated from all SPF herds included in this study, except one, emphasizing the high prevalence of this serotype in Denmark. By ribotyping, airborne transmission was indicated in five of 12 cases, transmission via pig transporting vehicle was indicated in six of nine cases, and transmission via trading was indicated in one of two cases. In many cases findings of predominant ribotypes made interpretations of suspected routes of transmission difficult. The relationship of strains based on ribotypes was calculated using Dices coefficient and clustered by UPGMA. HindIII ribotypes of serotype 2 strains were closely related, though only showing 43% similarity to HindIII ribotypes of remaining serotypes.

Abstract
In an experimental infection model mimicking acute Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (Ap) infection in swine (Sus scrofa) by aerosol inoculation, the development of a number of typical clinical signs was accompanied by a prototypic acute phase reaction encompassing fever and an acute phase protein response peaking at around 2 days after infection. Haptoglobin, C-reactive protein (CRP), and major acute phase protein (MAP) responded with large increases in serum levels, preceding the development of specific antibodies by 4-5 days. Serum amyloid A protein (SAA) was also strongly induced. The increase, kinetics of induction and normalization were different between these proteins. It is concluded that experimental Ap-infection by the aerosol route induces a typical acute phase reaction in the pig, and that pig Hp, CRP, MAP, and SAA are major acute phase reactants. These findings indicate the possibility of using one or more of these reactants for the nonspecific surveillance of pig health status.
