Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterize the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene in Schistosoma japonicum (SjEGFR gene) and investigate the role of the EGFR gene in regulating the growth, reproductive system, maturation and fecundity of S. japonicum. METHODS Rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) was performed to obtain the full length of the SjEGFR gene, and the SjEGFR gene expression was quantified in different developmental stages of S. japonicum using a quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) assay. The tissue localization of the SjEGFR gene was detected in 22-day parasite using whole-mount in situ hybridization (WISH). Following RNA interference (RNAi)-induced knockdown of the SjEGFR gene, the worm length, pairing rate and worm burden of S. japonicum were measured, and the worm morphology was observed using optical microscopy and confocal microscopy. RESULTS The SjEGFR gene was identified with a conserved tyrosine-kinase active site, and the SjEGFR gene expression was detected at various developmental stages in male and female parasites. WISH showed that the transcript of the SjEGFR gene was localized on the tegument and in the digestive organs of S. japonicum. RNAi-induced SjEGFR knockdown resulted in marked suppression of the worm growth, smaller size of male testicles that contained more immature spermatocytes, and apparent impairment of ovary and vitelline gland development. In addition, no eggs were found in the uterus of SjEGFR knocked-down female parasites, indicating the interruption of egg production. CONCLUSIONS Inhibition of SjEGFR expression may remarkably suppress the growth and maturation of S. japonicum, and interrupt the egg production.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Pan-drug-resistant (PDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the three top-priority pathogens identified by the WHO, and bacteriophages have been investigated as an alternative therapy. However, knowledge on the pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) of phage therapy is sparse, limiting its clinical applications. This study aimed to evaluate the PK/PD of the antipseudomonal phage øPEV20 in vivo following intravenous administration. METHODS Healthy Sprague-Dawley rats were given øPEV20 as a single intravenous bolus of ~6, 9 and 11-log10PFU/rat. Arterial blood was sampled over 72 h. At 72 h, the animals were killed and multiple tissues were harvested for biodistribution studies. A PK model was developed using the importance sampling algorithm and deterministic simulations with a PD model were performed. RESULTS A three-compartment model with non-linear clearance described the exposure of øPEV20 in blood. Model evaluation indicated that the model was robust and parameter estimates were accurate. The median (standard error) values of model-predicted PK parameters for VC, VP1, VP2, Q1, Q2, Vm and Km were 111 mL/rat (8.5%), 128 mL/rat (4.97%), 180 mL/rat (4.59%), 30.4 mL/h/rat (19.2%), 538 mL/h/rat (4.97%), 4.39 × 1010 PFU/h/rat (10.2%) and 1.64 × 107 PFU/mL/rat (3.6%), respectively. The distribution of øPEV20 was not homogeneous; there was preferential accumulation in the liver and spleen. Deterministic simulations with a PD model confirmed the importance of the host immune system in facilitating phage-mediated bacterial elimination. CONCLUSIONS We developed a robust PK model to describe the disposition of phages in healthy rats. This model may have significant potential in facilitating future preclinical and clinical PK/PD investigations.

Abstract
Foot pad dermatitis (FPD) is a serious problem of the modern poultry industry, negatively affecting birds' welfare and health status, walking and feeding activity, growth performance, carcass quality, and economic performance of meat production. The gut microbiome in poultry with FPD has not been previously investigated. Therefore, we compared the cecal microbiomes of 8 breeding ducks with FPD to 8 control ducks (breeders with apparently healthy feet) by pyrosequencing the bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene. The results showed a significant β-diversity (P < 0.05) of cecal microbiota presented between healthy and FPD-affected breeder ducks. The plasma endotoxins, interleukin 1β (IL-1β), IL-17, IL-6, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor-α concentration, and the abundance of class Clostridia in FPD-affected ducks was markedly higher (P < 0.05), however, the abundance of genus Prevotella, Lactobacillus, Lachnospiraceae UCG-008, and the Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio in FPD-affected ducks was significantly lower (P < 0.05) when compared to healthy ducks. These findings suggest when duck breeders are affected with FPD, ducks show an increased inflammatory response and a difference of structure and composition of the cecal microbiome.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate to the effects of dietary CP levels and protease supplementation on growth performance, carcass traits, meat quality, nutrients utilization, and standardized ileal digestibility of amino acid in Pekin ducks fed a complex diet. A total of 960 14-day-old male ducks were weighed and randomly allotted to a 2 × 5 factorial arrangement of 10 treatments with 6 replicate pens per treatment and 16 ducks per pen fed to 49 D of age. Experimental factors included five dietary CP levels ranging from 13.5 to 17.5% and with or without protease (200 mg/kg) supplementation. Between day 28 to 34, the digestible and metabolizable trials were performed. Significant CP × protease interactions (P < 0.05) on breast meat yield, DM, energy and nitrogen utilization, as well as standardized ileal digestibility values of 7 amino acids were observed. Regardless of protease supplementation, ducks fed 13.5, 14.5, and 15.5% CP had a poorer (P < 0.05) growth performance and breast meat yield than ducks fed with 16.5 and 17.5% CP. Ducks fed 13.5% CP had a positive effect (P < 0.05) on meat quality, dietary DM, energy and nitrogen utilization as well as standardized ileal digestibility of amino acids. Protease supplementation increased (P < 0.05) DM and phosphorus retention and decreased (P < 0.05) shear force of breast meat, regardless of CP level; when CP = 14.5%, protease significantly increased (P < 0.05) breast muscle yield. The optimal CP requirement without or with protease supplementation for BWG and FI were 17.02 or 16.53% and 16.64 or 16.75%, respectively, based on linear broken-line regression.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the clinical value of capsule endoscopy (CE) in small intestinal diseases and to explore the correlation between the diagnosis and clinical characteristics. Methods: From June 2016 to April 2019, a total of 194 patients receiving CE were enrolled in the Department of Gastroenterology, Shanxi People's Hospital, including 68 patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, 104 with chronic abdominal pain and 22 with diarrhea. Results: The detection rate of small intestinal lesions by CE was 53.6%(104/194), of which gastrointestinal bleeding was 66.2% (45/68), chronic abdominal pain was 53.8%(56/104), and diarrhea was 13.6%(3/22). The first three positive diagnostic criteria of CE for gastrointestinal bleeding were non-specific inflammation, small intestinal ulcer and vascular malformation. CE findings in patients with abdominal pain were non-specific inflammation, small intestinal ulcer and Crohn's disease; while the major endoscopic presentations in patients with diarrhea were small intestinal ulcer and non-specific inflammation. Logistic regression analysis suggested that the clinical manifestations and gender were correlated with positive diagnosis by CE (P<0.05), and the positive diagnostic rate of CE in female patients was significantly lower than that in male patients [31.6%(25/79) vs. 51.3%(59/115), P<0.05]. The diagnostic rates of CE in patients with gastrointestinal bleeding and chronic abdominal pain were similar [55.9%(38/68) vs. 41.4%(43/104)], which was significantly higher than those with diarrhea [9.1%(2/22), P<0.05]. Conclusions: Capsule endoscopy has a high detection rate for small intestinal diseases, which could be the first choice in patients with unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding. Male patients and gastrointestinal bleeding are predictors of positive findings by CE.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that a high level of a vitamin premix would prevent the deleterious effects of rapeseed meal (RSM) when added to the diet of Pekin meat ducks. A total of 674 fifteen-day-old ducks were randomly allocated to 6 treatments with 7 cages of 16 ducks each. Three diets were formulated that contained 5, 10, or 20% RSM to compensate for reducing levels of soybean meal. Each RSM level diet was then supplemented with either a low level (low) or a high level (high) of a vitamin premix providing a total of 6 experimental diets. Ducks were fed one of the 6 experimental diets (N = 7 pens per diet) from days 15 to 35 at which time they were euthanized. Ducks were analyzed for antioxidant activity, liver biochemistry, thyroid hormone levels, and liver and thyroid histopathology. Addition of the high vitamin premixes to the 5 or 10% RSM diets improved BW (P < 0.05), BW gain (BWG; P < 0.05), and feed to gain ratio (F/G; P < 0.05) compared to the low vitamin premix; however, neither vitamin premix level had effects on production variables of ducks fed the 20% RSM diet. The high vitamin premix level also improved antioxidant capacity as evidenced by increased (P < 0.05) serum and liver superoxide dismutase activities over that of the low vitamin premix diets. Furthermore, the high level of vitamin premix prevented liver and thyroid pathologies in diets that contain RSM compared to diets with the low vitamin premix. These results suggested that high vitamin premix could prevent the negative effects of a 5 or 10% RSM diet in ducks by improving antioxidative capacities and alleviating liver and thyroid damage.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of rapeseed expeller cake (REC) derived from Brassica napus rapeseed with different concentrations of glucosinolate (Gls) and erucic acid (EA) on the egg-production performance, egg quality, apparent nutrient digestibility, and intestinal morphology in laying hens. At 33 wk of age, a total of 1,080 laying hens were randomly divided into 9 treatment groups in a completely randomized design involving a control treatment without REC (a corn–soybean diet) and a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement with 2 concentrations of REC (at 7 and 14%) from 4varieties of rapeseed varying in Gls and EA concentrations [DY6 REC: 22.67 μmol/g (Gls, relative to rapeseed meal), 0.7% (EA, relative to total fatty acids); MB1 REC: 43.23 μmol/g, 3.5%; DY5 REC: 74.66 μmol/g, 16.20%; XH3 REC: 132.83 μmol/g, 44.60%]. The trial lasted for 8 wk. Compared with the control group, REC addition decreased the ADFI, egg production, egg weight, and egg mass of laying hens during wk1 to wk4, wk5 to wk8, and wk1 to wk8 (P < 0.05), and REC did not affect FCR, mortality during wk1 to wk4, wk5 to wk8, and wk1 to wk8 (P > 0.05). The XH3 REC group had a trend to lower egg weight when compared with the DY6 REC group during wk1 to wk8 (P = 0.07).REC decreased AME and DM digestibility at wk8 (P < 0.01), and REC addition in diet did not affect apparent nitrogen digestibility (P = 0.6). REC decreased villi height (P < 0.01) and increased crypt depth (P < 0.01). The XH3 REC group had a lower crude fat digestibility than the DY6 REC group, and the crude fat digestibility of the DY5 and MB1 REC groups was lower than the XH3 REC group (P < 0.01). The DY6 REC group had a higher villi height than the DY5, MB1, and XH3 REC groups (P < 0.01). The XH3 REC group had a higher crypt depth than the DY6, DY5, and MB1 REC groups (P < 0.01). The DY6 REC group had a higher value of the ratio of villi height to crypt depth than the DY5 and MB1 REC groups, and the DY5 and MB1 REC groups had a higher value of the ratio of villi height to crypt depth than the XH3 REC group (P < 0.01).REC decreased albumen height and Haugh unit during wk1 to wk8 (P < 0.01 and P = 0.004), and increased yolk color during wk1 to wk8 (P < 0.01).The XH3, MB1, and DY5 REC groups had a lower albumen height than the DY6 REC group during wk1 to wk8 (P < 0.01), and the XH3 and DY5 REC groups had a lower Haugh unit than the DY6 REC group during wk1 to wk8 (P < 0.01). The DY6 REC group had the highest value of yolk color than other three varieties of REC (DY5, MB1, XH3) at wk6 and wk8 (P < 0.01 and P < 0.01). It can be concluded that the exposure of laying hens to REC with higher Gls and EA (DY5, MB1, XH3) led to a lower egg weight, nutrient digestibility, intestinal absorptive area, and egg internal quality than those with lower Gls and EA (DY6).

Abstract
Lonicera confusa (LC) and Astragali Radix (AR) extracts have been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities in human. To determine whether LC or/and AR extracts had similar functions to improve the egg production and egg quality, 1,440 (52-wk-old) Lohmann pink-shell hens were randomly distributed into 4 treatments with nine replicates of 40 hens. The hens were fed a basal diet (CON) or the basal diet supplemented with 0.1% LC extracts, 0.1% AR extracts, or 0.1% LC extracts plus 0.1% AR extracts (LC-AR) for 12 wk. The eggs were collected on week 6 and 12 for analysis, and the plasma and ovaries were collected at end of trial. Dietary treatment did not influence (P < 0.05) egg production, egg weight, and feed conversion ratio. However, LC-AR addition increased (P < 0.02) yolk color and sensory quality of hard-boiled eggs compared to other groups. The LC-AR supplementation increased (P = 0.02), and LC addition tended to increase (P = 0.08) Haugh unit of eggs on week 12 compared to CON. The LC-AR supplementation decreased (P < 0.001), and LC or AR individual addition tended to decrease (P < 0.10) plasma malondialdehyde concentration compared to CON. Conversely, LC supplementation increased (P = 0.02) total superoxide dismutase activity, and LC or/and AR supplementation increased the activities of manganese-containing superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) (P < 0.08) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) (P < 0.01) in plasma, and the mRNA abundance of MnSOD, GSH-Px1, and catalase in ovaries (P < 0.05) compared to CON. The LC or/and AR supplementation decreased the concentrations of interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in plasma (P < 0.05), and the mRNA abundance of IL-6 and TNF-α in ovaries (P < 0.04) compared to CON. These results suggested dietary inclusion of LC or/and AR improved the albumen quality, and a blend of LC and AR improved yolk color, which were associated with the enhancement of antioxidant capacity and the suppression of systemic inflammation in hens.

Abstract
Genetic progress and increasing nutrient density for greater body mass and meat yield in poultry has inadvertently led to an imbalance between pectorales mass and sternal development which may or may not be detrimental to productivity and welfare. Slowing weight gain while promoting bone mineralization could positively influence sternal health. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the effect of graded calcium (Ca) supplementation in low nutrient density (LND) diets on sternal mass and bone turnover in meat ducks. Male meat ducks (720, 15-day-old) were randomly assigned and fed a standard nutrient density positive control (PC) diet, and 4 LND diets with 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, and 1.1% Ca, respectively. Metabolic energy (ME) was reduced in the LND by 9.5 and 16.3% at 15-35 D and 36-56 D compared to PC diet, respectively, while maintaining proportionate essential nutrient proportions to energy similar as in the PC diet. Although the 0.9% Ca LND diet decreased body weight and sternal dimension, it increased the relative sternum weight, the trabecular bone volume/tissue volume (BV/TV) and Ca content of the sternum compared with PC diet. Feeding 0.7% or more Ca with the LND diet significantly increased the mineral content, bone density, BV/TV, and trabecular number of the sternum for 49-days-old ducks. Furthermore, the LND diet with 0.7% or more Ca-increased osteocyte-specific gene mRNA and osteoprotegerin (OPG) expression, and it blocked the expression of cathepsin K and decreased osteoclasts number per bone surface. Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining also revealed that the addition 0.7% or more Ca to the LND diet significantly decreased the number of osteoclasts compared with the 0.5% Ca LND diet. Meanwhile TRAP activity in serum was significantly decreased in 0.7% or more Ca-treated groups. We concluded that LND diet with 0.7% or more Ca may maintain optimal sternal mass through suppressing bone resorption for meat duck.

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine whether protein solubility (PS) of rapeseed meals (RSM) can affect standardized ileal amino acid digestibility (SIDAA) in meat ducks. A total of 1,168, 14-days-old ducks were randomly allotted to 23 treatments (6 cages per diet, 8 ducks per cage) and 1 nitrogen-free diet treatment (8 cages, 8 ducks per cage) based on body weight. The 23 experimental diets consisted of a corn–soybean meal basal diet, and 22 diets containing 15% RSM: 85% basal diet. Titanium dioxide (0.5%) was included in all diets as an indigestible marker. On day 18, all ducks were euthanized by carbon dioxide asphyxiation and digesta samples from the ileum. The contents of PS, ether extract (EE), glucosinolate, isothiocyanate, and oxazolidine were significantly different (P < 0.05) in the 22 RSM, with the CV being 52.62, 49.23, 86.84, 90.19, and 81.98%, respectively. The content of lysine (Lys) and methionine in the 22 RSM samples ranged from 1.03 to 2.71% (CV 24.19%) and from 0.33 to 0.65% (CV 15.17%), respectively. The SIDAA, except for leucine (Leu) and tyrosine, of the 22 RSM samples varied significantly (P < 0.05). A positive correlation was observed (P < 0.05) between PS and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of Lys, isoleucine, valine, phenylalanine, histidine, serine, cysteine, and tyrosine. The R2 value of multiple linear regression equations for predicting the SID of amino acids (AA) was best for Lys (R2 = 0.958 using dry matter, crude protein, EE, crude fiber, acid detergent fiber, and PS) and least significant for Leu (R2 = 0.348 using crude fiber and ash) with intermediate values for other AA (R2 = 0.359–0.837, P < 0.05). These results suggest that PS varying from 15.06 to 98.08%, also varied considerably in the proximate nutrient content, AA composition, and antinutritional factor content, which was reflected in considerable differences in the duck's SID of AA in RSM. Therefore, PS value can partly reflect the quality of RSM.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of dietary graded raw potato starch (RPS) levels on growth performance, plasma cytokines concentration, ileal barrier function, and cecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) concentration in meat ducks from 1 to 35 D of age. This study included 2 experiments. In experiment (Exp.) 1, sixteen 35-day-old meat ducks were used to evaluate the AME of RPS by orogastric administration. Results showed the AME value of RPS on ducks is 2.76 kcal/g. In Exp. 2, a total of 600 one-day-old ducklings were randomly assigned to 5 isonitrogenous and isoenergetic dietary treatments that included 0 (control), 6, 12, 18, and 24% RPS, respectively. Samples were collected at both of 14 and 35 D. Neither growth performance nor ileal parameters (length, weight, and pH) at both of 14 and 35 D was affected by dietary RPS. However, the mucosal thickness (14 D), villus height (except for 18% RPS at 14 D), and the villus height: crypt depth ratio (14 and 35 D) of the ileum were increased in the 12 and 18% RPS diets when compared to 0% RPS diet. Meanwhile, proinflammatory factors such as plasma interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6 (14 D) reduced in 12% RPS diet and tumor necrosis factor α decreased in 12% (except for 14 D) and 18% RPS groups. When compared with the control group, diets with 18% RPS significantly increased mucin 2 gene expression at 14 D, and 12% RPS elevated the mRNA expression of tight junction proteins including Zonula occludens-1 and Claudin 1 (except for 14 D) in the ileal mucosa of birds. Furthermore, ducks fed 12% RPS diet had higher concentrations of acetate, propionate, and butyrate in cecal digesta than other groups. These findings indicated that diets with 12 and/or 18% RPS increased the cecal SCFA concentration, which subsequently enhanced the barrier function and improved intestinal health in the ileum for 14 and 35-day-old meat ducks.

Abstract
The objective of this current study was to characterize the basic physiological data on morphological and mineralized properties of the tibia from 1 to 56 days, as well as the interrelationships of body weight (BW) and bone traits for meat ducks. A total of 176 1-d-old ducks was allocated into eight pens and fed with the same diet until the age of 56 d. Eight birds (1 ducks/pen) were randomly selected weekly for measuring BW and tibia characteristics. The BW of duck was increased with age throughout the whole study. Tibial length and width rapidly grew from 1 to 35 d, when it leveled off. The fat-free weight, ash, calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) content of tibia increased rapidly from 1 to 42 d and reached its plateau from 42 d onward. Tibial density and tibia-breaking strength increased in a regular manner with age until 42 d. Serum alkaline phosphatase activity was higher between 1 to 7 d in the duck. Regression and ontogenetic scaling analysis showed the age of maximal growth rate in tibia dimension and mineralization was earlier than that in BW; when compared with BW, tibial fat-free weight and tibia-breaking strength increased isometrically, tibia length displayed a negative allometry, and tibial width showed a positive allometric growth. Results indicate that the tibia displayed rapid bone growth (1 to 35 d) and mineralization (1 to 42 d), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) plays a critical role in the early stage of tibia mineralization of meat duck. Intensive selection for growth rate in ducks has resulted in tibial morphology changes, which represents an interesting compromise of adaptation for increasing BW.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the safety and efficacy of surgical treatment for chronic radiation intestinal injury. Methods: A descriptive cohort study was performed. Clinical data of 73 patients with definite radiation history and diagnosed clinically as chronic radiation intestinal injury, undergoing operation at Department of Colorectal Surgery, the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from January 1, 2012 to February 28, 2019, were reviewed and analyzed retrospectively. Patients did not undergo operation or only received adhesiolysis were excluded. All the patients had preoperative examination and overall evaluation of the disease. According to severity of intestinal obstruction and patients' diet, corresponding nutritional support and conservative treatment were given. Surgical methods: The one-stage bowel resection and anastomosis was the first choice for surgical treatment of chronic radiation intestinal injury. Patients with poor nutritional condition were given enterostomy and postoperative enteral nutrition and second-stage stoma closure and intestinal anastomosis if nutritional condition improved. For those who were unable to perform stoma closure, a permanent stoma should be performed. Patients with severe abdominal adhesion which was difficult to separate, enterostomy or bypass surgery after adhesiolysis would be the surgical choice. For patients with tumor metastasis or recurrence, enterostomy or bypass surgery should be selected. Observation parameters: the overall and major (Clavien-Dindo grades III to V) postoperative complication within 30 days after surgery or during hospitalization; mortality within postoperative 30 days; postoperative hospital stay; time to postoperative recovery of enteral nutrition; time to removal of drainage tube. Results: Of the 73 patients who had been enrolled in this study, 10 were male and 63 were female with median age of 54 (range, 34-80) years. Preoperative evaluation showed that 61 patients had intestinal stenosis, 63 had intestinal obstruction, 11 had intestinal perforation, 20 had intestinal fistula, 3 had intestinal bleeding, and 6 had abdominal abscess, of whom 64(87.7%) patients had multiple complications. Tumor recurrence or metastasis was found in 15 patients. A total of 65(89.0%) patients received preoperative nutritional support, of whom 35 received total parenteral nutrition and 30 received partial parenteral nutrition. The median preoperative nutritional support duration was 8.5 (range, 6.0-16.2) days. The rate of one-stage intestine resection was 69.9% (51/73), and one-stage enterostomy was 23.3% (17/73). In the 51 patients undergoing bowel resection, the average length of resected bowel was (50.3±49.1) cm. Among the 45 patients with intestinal anastomosis, 4 underwent manual anastomosis and 41 underwent stapled anastomosis; 36 underwent side-to-side anastomosis, 5 underwent end-to-side anastomosis, and 4 underwent end-to-end anastomosis. Eighty postoperative complications occurred in 39 patients and the overall postoperative complication rate was 53.4% (39/73), including 39 moderate to severe complications (Clavien-Dindo grade III-V) in 20 patients (27.4%, 20/73) and postoperative anastomotic leakage in 2 patients (2.7%, 2/73). The mortality within postoperative 30 days was 2.7% (2/73); both patients died of abdominal infection, septic shock, and multiple organ failure caused by anastomotic leakage. The median postoperative hospital stay was 13 (11, 23) days, the postoperative enteral nutrition time was (7.2±6.9) days and the postoperative drainage tube removal time was (6.3±4.2) days. Conclusions: Surgical treatment, especially one-stage anastomosis, is safe and feasible for chronic radiation intestine injury. Defining the extent of bowel resection, rational selection of the anatomic position of the anastomosis and perioperative nutritional support treatment are the key to reduce postoperative complications.

Abstract
AIMS The survival benefit of radiation therapy in gastric cancer patients who underwent curative resection remains contentious. MATERIALS AND METHODS Gastric cancer patients who underwent curative resection followed by adjuvant chemotherapy or chemoradiation therapy (CRT) between 2004 and 2014 were identified from the National Cancer Database. Survival analyses were carried out with the Kaplan-Meier method and the Cox regression model. RESULTS In total, 4347 patients were included in this study. Of these patients, 1185 patients received postoperative chemotherapy alone and 3162 patients received postoperative CRT. For all patients included in the analysis, patients who received CRT had significantly better overall survival than those who received chemotherapy alone (5-year overall survival: 54.8% versus 46.8%, P < 0.001). The survival benefit primarily occurred in patients with stage II (5-year overall survival: 58.7% versus 53.8%, P = 0.03), stage III (42.5% versus 30.3%, P < 0.001) and lymph node-positive (5-year overall survival: 52.2% versus 41.9%, P = 0.03) gastric cancer. Multivariable analysis confirmed the improvement in overall survival in patients who received postoperative CRT (hazard ratio = 0.78; 95% confidence interval, 0.661-0.926; P < 0.001) was independent of all known prognostic factors. For lymph node-positive patients with lymphovascular invasion (LVI), postoperative CRT significantly improved overall survival compared with chemotherapy alone (5-year overall survival: 49.0% versus 39.4%, P = 0.001). However, there was no survival difference between CRT and chemotherapy alone if lymph node-positive patients had no LVI (5-year overall survival: 54.5% versus 52.7%, P = 0.55). CONCLUSION The current study suggests that postoperative CRT provides a survival benefit in gastric cancer patients with concurrent lymph node-positive and LVI-positive disease. A randomised clinical trial may further evaluate the benefit of adjuvant CRT in this subgroup.

Abstract
The present study tested whether tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) supplementation could influence the growth performance, Salmonella Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) load, inflammasomes, cytokines, and chemokines in broilers. Treatments were a 2 × 2 factorial design, including negative control (NC), S. Typhimurium challenge (SC), and NC/SC + TMP (150 mg/kg of diet). The trial lasted for 28 D, and S. Typhimurium subclinical challenge was occurred on day 8. The results showed that S. Typhimurium challenge worsened (P < 0.05) growth performance, S. Typhimurium load in intestinal digesta and visceral tissues, intestinal inflammatory responses, and permeability compared to the NC treatment. TMP supplementation increased (P < 0.05) feed intake, weight gain, and feed efficiency by 4.3 to 12.0%, but decreased (P < 0.05) S. Typhimurium load by 5.4 to 45.8%, inflammasomes (caspase-1/3/9, gasdermin A/E, and nod-like receptor protein 3) by 25.0 to 59.0%, chemokines (C-C motif ligand 2 and C-X-C motif 10) by 40.2 to 47.2%, intestinal permeability by 28.2% compared to the SC treatment. The TMP also reduced inflammatory response by influencing tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin 1β/4/6. Factorial analysis indicated that TMP and SC were interactive (P < 0.05) on most parameters due to the more pronounced TMP effect in S. Typhimurium challenge groups. It is concluded that TMP can promote growth and mitigate S. Typhimurium infection by reducing the S. Typhimurium load and inflammatory response in broilers.

Abstract
As the understanding of the pathways involved in such effect are quite limited, we investigated the gene pathways that modulate lipid metabolism in layers and the fatty acid profiles of the yolk of layers that were challenged with dietary vanadium (V) and supplemented with epigallo-catechin-3-gallate (EGCG). For this purpose, a total of 120 hens were divided into four groups which were fed the following experimental diets for a period of 8 weeks: control (basal diet), V10 (control + 10 mg/kg V), EGCG130 (V10 + 130 mg/kg EGCG), and EGCG217 (V10 + 217 mg/kg EGCG). Blood total cholesterol, triglyceride, glucose, and very low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol concentration were lower in V10, EGCG130, and EGCG217 groups compared to the control group, while total cholesterol and triglyceride content in blood were lower in the EGCG217 group than in V10 group (P < 0.05). Hens consumed V10 diet had the highest triglyceride content in liver among treatments, whereas EGCG130 and EGCG217 groups had lower values when compared to those observed in the control group (P < 0.01). Dietary inclusion of V increased yolk polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) and total unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) content compared to the control group (P < 0.05), whereas the addition of either 130 or 217 mg/kg EGCG in V containing diet resulted in similar yolk PUFA and UFA contents with those observed in the control group. Treatment with V alone upregulated the expression of hepatic fatty acid synthase (FAS) and sterol-regulator element-binding protein 1 (SREBP1), while EGCG downregulated FAS and SREBP1 expressions in contrast to V10 treatments (P < 0.01). Liver gene expression peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) was lower in the V10 than in the control group while EGCG inclusion groups upregulated their expression (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the data gathered in this study indicate that dietary V and EGCG alter the layers' lipid metabolism and fat deposition pattern in egg yolk, which might be associated with their modulatory effect on lipogenesis-related gene (FAS, SREBP1, and PPARγ) expression.

A new menthane-type monoterpenoid, illigerate E (1), as well as two known ones, (1R*,3R*,4S*,6R*)-6,8-dihydroxymenthol (2) and cis-4-hydroxy-5-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-2-methyl-2-cyclohexene-1-one (3), were isolated from fermented Illigera aromatica with Clonostachys rogersoniana 828H2. Their structures were identified by HRESIMS and 1D/2D NMR spectra. Their inhibitory effects of NO production in RAW 264.7 macrophages were estimated.

Abstract
Alum sludge is the sludge discharged from a sedimentation tank in a drinking water treatment plant when polymerized with poly-aluminum chloride (PAC). In this paper, granular alum sludge adsorbent (GASA) was manufactured using powdery alum sludge (PAS) as the raw material and methods such as gluing and pore-forming. The effects of different binders, pore-forming agents, roasting temperatures, and roasting times on the formation of GASA and its dephosphorization performance were investigated. Results showed that the optimum binder was AlCl3 at a mass ratio of 8%, and the best pore-forming agent was starch at a 4% dosage ratio. Meanwhile, the optimum roasting temperature and time were 500 °C and 2 hours, respectively. The specific surface area of GASA was 23.124 m2/g. Scanning electron microscopy suggested that GASA's surface became rough, particles became tight, and average pore size increased, with additional pore channels. P adsorption by GASA reached 0.90 mg/g. The effluent phosphorus concentration of actual tail water decreased to 0.49 mg/L and the removal rate reached 73.5% when the GASA dosage was 20 g/L. The findings of this study are important for the further development of a low-cost adsorbent material for P removal in the future.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the influence of lifestyle intervention on long-term diabetes in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) returned to normal glucose tolerance (NGT) within 6 years. Methods: A total of 577 subjects (aged 25-74 years old) with IGT in Daqing were enrolled and randomly assigned to control, and diet, exercise and diet plus exercise groups in a six-year intervention trial in 1986. Subjects who were non-diabetic at the end of the intervention were followed up for additional 14 years. Results: Among all the subjects, 41.38% of them who had returned to NGT from IGT within 6 years maintained NGT status after 20 years, and had a lower incidence of diabetes than subjects maintained IGT status (46.55% vs. 75.25%). Of note, in the intervention group, the percentage of participants developed diabetes in the NGT subjects was significantly lower than that in the IGT group (43.71% vs. 76.25%) after 20 years. There was high long-term risk for diabetes in the IGT subjects after the adjustment of age, sex and baseline glucose (HR=1.81, 95%CI 1.27-2.58, P=0.001), whereas in the non-intervention group, no significant difference could be viewed in long-term diabetic risk between subjects maintained IGT status and those returned to NGT (71.43% vs. 65.22%) after adjusting of the same confounders (HR=1.03, 95%CI 0.45-2.35, P=0.94). Conclusions: IGT subjects who had returned to NGT in early years had lower risk for future diabetes than those who remained IGT. However, this beneficial effect could only be viewed in the intervention group, but not in the non-intervention group.

Abstract
This study was to determine the effects of rapeseed oil on production performance, egg quality, and serum parameters in laying hens. A total of 1,080 hens (33-wk-old) were randomly divided into a 1 plus 4 × 2 factorial design including four different rapeseed oil sources [high erucic acid of Mianyang city (MH); high erucic acid of Deyang city (DH); low erucic acid of Mianyang (ML); low erucic acid of Deyang (DL)] at two levels (2% and 4%) for 12 wk. The egg production and egg weight were decreased (P < 0.05) during 9 to 12 wk and 1 to 12 wk, while the average daily feed intake (ADFI) and feed conversion ratio were decreased (P < 0.01) in all phases compared to the control group. Adding ML as oil source had higher (P < 0.05) egg weight compared to DH in all periods in spite of levels. Meanwhile, layers fed 4% rapeseed oil decreased (P < 0.01) egg production compared with 2% in all phases except 1 to 4 wk. Regardless of rapeseed oil sources, hens fed 4% oil decreased (P < 0.05) egg weight in contrast to 2% during the whole experiment except 5 to 8 wk. The ADFI was lower (P < 0.01) in 4% oil inclusion groups compared with 2% during overall phase. Rapeseed oil decreased the yolk color (P < 0.01) and yolk ratio (P = 0.02) and increased (P < 0.01) the albumen height and Haugh unit at 12 wk. Dietary rapeseed oil supplementation resulted in a decreased total triglyceride (TG; P < 0.01) and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P = 0.02). Regardless of rapeseed oil levels, layers fed MH had higher TG (P < 0.01), TC (P < 0.05), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P < 0.05), alanine transaminase (P < 0.01) than those fed other sources. Taken together, the addition of rapeseed oil decreased laying performance, reduced TC and TG in the serum, and increased Haugh unit, with low erucic acid or 2% group showed more pronounced results among all treatments.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary energy concentration on growth performance, serum biochemical indices, and the mRNA expression of inflammatory cytokines in the liver of meat ducks challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). A total of 600 1-d-old Cherry Valley meat ducks were randomly assigned to 10 treatments with six replicate cages of 10 birds/pen. A 5 × 2 factorial arrangement in a complete randomized design experiment was used to study the effect of five concentrations of dietary metabolizable energy (ME, 2,800, 2,900, 3,000, 3,100, and 3,200 kcal/kg) with or without a challenge with LPS in meat ducks. All experimental ducks were intraperitoneally injected with either 0.5 mg/kg body weight (BW) LPS or an equivalent amount of sterile saline at 15, 17, and 19 d of age. The results showed that LPS challenge significantly decreased (P < 0.05) BW (d 21), body weight gain (d 15-21) and average daily feed intake (ADFI; d 15-21), and markedly increased (P < 0.05) relative spleen weight, serum total protein concentration, and the mRNA expression of interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin 10, transforming growth factor β (TGF-β), and Avian Beta Defensin 10 (AVBD-10) in the liver of meat ducks. Ducks fed 3,200 kcal/kg ME diet had the lowest (P < 0.05) ADFI than those fed with the other diets. Additionally, there were significantly LPS by diet interactions on IL-6, interferon-γ, TGF-β, AVBD-10, and inducible nitric oxide synthase mRNA expression (P < 0.05), wherein a more pronounced liver inflammatory response was observed in birds fed high-energy diets (3,100 and 3,200 kcal/kg ME) than birds fed low-energy diet (2,800 and 2,900 kcal/kg ME). The results indicated that 3,100 and 3,200 kcal/kg ME of diets increased hepatic inflammatory markers induced by LPS challenge in ducks but did not influence performance responsiveness during this challenge.

Abstract
Objective:To investigate the correlation between the types of unicate process (UP) superior attachment and the chronic frontal sinusitis without nasal polyps(CFSsNP).Method:The images of 240 sides of frontal recess were evaluated. The types of UP superior attachment was compared between the CFSsNP group and the control group. The correlation between UP the superior attachment and CFSsNP were analyzed. Result:Seven types of UP superior attachment were identified. The most common type in the two study groups was type 1(insertion into the lamina papyracea). The occurrence rate of type 1 of UP superior attachment in the CFSsNP group was significantly higher than that in the control group(59.8% and 36.4%,respectively P<0.01),but type 5(insertion into both the lamina papyracea and the skull base) was significantly less frequent in the CFSsNP group than in the control group(9.8%,28.8%,P<0.01). Logistic regression analysis revealed that the type 1 of UP superior attachment was an independent risk factor for CFSsNP(OR=1.181,P<0.05),and that type 5 of UP superior attachment was a protective factor for CFSsNP(OR=0.391,P<0.05). Conclusion:UP superior attachment varied significantly,with the most common type being type 1; This type is intimately related to CFSsNP.

Abstract
Objective:To investigate the value of image-guided system in identifying the frontal recess cells.Method:We collected 30 cases that underwent image-guided frontal sinus surgery from November 2014 to December 2015. These frontal recess cells were devided into 2 groups based upon their locations in the frontal sinus ostium. Group A consists of the agger nasi cells, type Ⅰfrontal cells, type Ⅱ frontal cells and suprabullar cells; group B consist of type Ⅲ frontal cells, type Ⅳ frontal cells, frontal bullar cells, interfrontal sinus septal cells and supraorbital ethmoid cells. Visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to evaluate the degree of demand of image guide system on the location of frontal recess cells, and then analyzed the value of image guided system on the frontal recess cells.Result:In all 30 patients the imageguided frontal sinus surgery was successfully completed.The demand degree of image-guided system on frontal recess cells by VAS was slight for the agger nasi cells, type Ⅰfrontal cells, type Ⅱ frontal cells and suprabullar cells; the demand degree was general for the frontal bullar cells and interfrontal sinus septal cells; the demand degree was obvious for type Ⅲ frontal cells, type Ⅳ frontal cells and supraorbital ethmoid cells. Frontal recess cells of group B were more depended on image guided system than those of group A, and the difference was signicant(P <0.01).Conclusion:Imageguided system is valuable in distinguishing for type Ⅲ frontal cells,type Ⅳ frontal cells supraorbital ethmoid cells and interfrontal sinus septal cells.Furthermore,it is significantly helpful for accurate removal of these frontal recess cells in endoscopic frontal sinus surgery.

Abstract
Objective: To study the mutational characteristics of KCNT1 and its clinical features in children with early-onset epileptic encephalopathy. Methods: Retrospective analysis of clinical data of 175 children with early onset epilepsy from the Department of Pediatrics at Peking University First Hospital from January 2012 to December 2017. Gene-based analysis was performed on children with targeted capture second-generation sequencing and the source of mutations was verified by PCR-Sanger. The clinical features of children with KCNT1 mutation were summarized. Results: In 175 infants with early-onset epileptic encephalopathy, 6 children were found to have KCNT1 mutations, all of which were new mutations with an overall mutation rate of 3.4% (6/175). All the mutations were missense mutations. The age of onset was from 2 days to 32 days. Five children were diagnosed with epilepsy of infancy with migrating focal seizure, one case was diagnosed with epilepsy, focal seizures, focal seizures with generalization. A total of 6 children were treated with multi-antiepileptic drugs. The disease in 4 patients were partially controlled, while in 2 patients, the disease was not significantly alleviated. One patient died of "severe pneumonia" at one year and 4 months of age. Then, four cases were treated with quinidine. The seizure frequency had no change in 3 cases, the frequency decreased and then relapsed in 1 case. The case once ketogenic diet and failed. Ketogenic diet treatment was applied to 5 cases, no significant effect was achieved. All the 6 patients had severe developmental delay. They could not sit alone, follow the light and objects and had no language. Conclusions: The mutation of KCNT1 gene is mainly de novo. The onset of the disease was early, and mostly occurs in neonate and early infancy. The main seizure type was epilepsy of infancy with migrating focal seizure. Patients usually had severe psychomotor developmental delay. Antiepileptic drugs are ineffective. The efficacy of quinidine was not significant. Though, it still need studies on a large sample.

Abstract
Background Malnutrition is a common and critical problem that influences outcome in cancer patients. Body composition reflects a patient's metabolic profile and physiologic reserves, which might be the true determinant of prognosis. In the present study, which aimed to identify valuable new prognostic indicators, we investigated the association between computed tomography-quantified body composition and short-term outcomes after gastrectomy for gastric cancer. Methods Skeletal muscle index, mean muscle attenuation, and ratio of visceral-to-subcutaneous adipose tissue area (vsr) were calculated from preoperative computed tomography images. Low skeletal muscle index, low mean muscle attenuation, and high vsr were respectively termed "sarcopenia," "myosteatosis," and "visceral obesity." The association of body composition with postoperative complications and serum markers of nutrition and inflammation after radical gastrectomy were analyzed. Results The overall complication rate was significantly higher in the sarcopenia (62.5% vs. 27.3%, p = 0.001) and myosteatosis groups (38.2% vs. 4%, p = 0.002). Patients with visceral obesity had a higher incidence of inflammatory complications (20.3% vs. 6.5%, p = 0.01). Multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that sarcopenia (p = 0.013), myosteatosis (p = 0.017), and low serum retinol-binding protein (p = 0.019) were independent risk factors for overall complications. Compared with control subjects, patients with sarcopenia had lower postoperative levels of serum retinol-binding protein (p = 0.007), and patients with visceral obesity had higher levels of C-reactive protein (p = 0.026). Conclusions Sarcopenia, myosteatosis, and visceral obesity were significantly associated with increased rates of postoperative complications and affected the postoperative nutrition and inflammation status of patients with gastric cancer.

Abstract
The study was conducted to distinguish the effect of dietary non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) levels on the community diversity and structure of the cecal microbiota in meat duck based on 16S rDNA high-throughput sequencing. In total, 525 1-d-old ducklings were fed diets (105 ducklings, 7 pens of 15 ducklings, on each diet) containing five levels of NPP (0.22, 0.34, 0.40, 0.46, and 0.58%) for 21 days. The results showed that dietary NPP levels linearly and quadratically increased (P < 0.05) 21 d body weight, 1 to 21 d feed intake and NPP intake, and contrarily, linearly decreased (P < 0.05) β-diversity of cecal microbial population in ducks. ß-diversity analyses showed that microbiota clustering based on dietary NPP levels occured, with 0.22% NPP groups distinctly different from the 0.46% and 0.58% NPP group samples. Moreover, dietary NPP levels could change the relative abundance of the phylum Proteobacteria (linear, P < 0.05), genera Eubacterium coprostanoligenes (quadratic, P < 0.05), Ruminococcaceae UCG-014 (quadratic, P < 0.05) and Subdoligrannulum (linear, P < 0.05), and Lachnospiraceae family (quadratic, P < 0.05) in cecal microbiota of ducks. Increasing the dietary NPP level influenced the cecal microbiota and positively affected the growth of meat ducks.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of cysteamine hydrochloride (CSH) supplementation on the growth performance, opportunistic bacteria and enterotoxic markers, visceral lesions, glutathione turnover, and inflammatory factors of broilers fed diets contaminated with aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). One-day-old Arbor Acres broilers (n = 480) were randomly allocated to 4 treatments with 6 replicates of 20 chicks each for a 2 × 2 design with CSH (0 or 200 mg/kg) and AFB1 (0 or 40 μg/kg). The trial lasted for 42 d. Results showed that AFB1 negatively affected (P < 0.05) growth performance, opportunistic bacteria and enterotoxic markers, intestinal lesions, glutathione turnover, and inflammatory factors. The CSH increased (P < 0.05) feed intake and body weight gain. The enterotoxic status was relieved in the CSH treatments by reducing (P < 0.05) the populations of gut Escherichia coli, Gram-negative bacteria, serum diamine oxidase, and intestinal lesions. The CSH also increased (P < 0.05) serum reduced glutathione, glutathione s-transferases, and glutathione reductase, and decreased (P < 0.05) the mRNA levels of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, and interleukin-1β. Significant interactions (P < 0.05) were found on Gram-negative bacteria, diamine oxidase, and glutathione s-transferases. The results suggest that the CSH can improve glutathione turnover and reduce the risk of enterotoxic disease induced by AFB1 in broilers.

Abstract
Essentials The pathogenesis of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) has not been fully clarified. We analyzed the role of anti-αvβ3 autoantibody in the pathogenesis of ITP in patients. Anti-αvβ3 autoantibody impeded megakaryocyte migration and adhesion to the vascular niche. Anti-αv β3 autoantibody potentially contributes to the pathogenesis of refractory ITP. SUMMARY Background The pathogenesis of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) has not been fully clarified. Anti-αvβ3 integrin autoantibody is detected in chronic ITP patients, but its contribution to ITP is still unclear. Objectives To clarify the potential role of anti-αvβ3 integrin autoantibody in chronic ITP and the related mechanism. Methods Relationship between levels of anti-αvβ3 autoantibody and platelets in chronic ITP patients was evaluated. The influence of anti-αvβ3 antibody on megakaryocyte (MK) survival, differentiation, migration and adhesion was assessed, and the associated signal pathways were investigated. Platelet recovery and MKs' distribution were observed in an ITP mouse model pretreated with different antibodies. Result In this study, we showed that the anti-αvβ3 autoantibody usually coexists with anti-αIIbβ3 autoantibody in chronic ITP patients, and patients with both autoantibodies have lower platelets. In in vitro studies, we showed that the anti-αvβ3 antibody had no significant effect on the survival and proliferation of MKs, whereas it decreased formations of proplatelet significantly. Anti-αvβ3 antibody impeded stromal cell derived facor-1 alpha (SDF-1α)- mediated migration and inhibited the phosphorylation of protein kinase B. Anti-αvβ3 antibody significantly inhibited MKs' adhesion to endothelial cells and Fibrogen. The phosphorylation of focal adhesion kinase and proto-oncogene tyrosine-protein kinase Src induced by adhesion was inhibited when MKs were pretreated with anti-αvβ3 antibody. In in vivo studies, we showed that injection with anti-αv antibody delayed platelet recovery in a mouse model of ITP. Conclusions These findings demonstrate that the autoantibody against integrin αv β3 may aggravate thrombocytopenia in ITP patients by impeding MK migration and adhesion to the vascular niche, which provides new insights into the pathogenesis of ITP.

Abstract
This study examined the prebiotic effects of xylooligosaccharides (XOS) on intestinal characteristics, gut microbiota, cecal short-chain fatty acids, plasma calcium metabolism, and immune parameters of laying hens. A total of 1,080 White Lohmann laying hens (28 wk of age) was assigned to 6 dietary treatments that included XOS at concentrations of 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, or 0.05% for 8 weeks. Each treatment had 6 replicates with 10 cages (3 birds/cage). Blood, intestinal tissues, and cecal digesta samples were collected from chickens at the end of the experiment. Villus height, crypt depth, the villus to crypt (VH: CD) ratio, and the relative length of different intestinal sections were evaluated. Additionally, the number of microorganisms and the content of short-chain fatty acids in cecal digesta samples were determined. Plasma concentrations of immunoglobulin A (IgA), immunoglobulin G, immunoglobulin M (IgM), interleukin 2 (IL-2), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), 1, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3), calcitonin (CT), and parathyroid hormone (PTH) were also determined. The results showed that villus height and the VH: CD ratio of the jejunum were increased (linear, P < 0.01) with the increase in dietary XOS concentration, and the relative length of the jejunum (P = 0.03) was increased significantly in XOS diets. Dietary supplementation of XOS significantly increased (linear, P < 0.01) the number of Bifidobacteria in the cecum; however, total bacteria count, Lactobacillus, and Escherichia coli in the cecum were not affected by XOS supplementation. In addition, inclusion of XOS increased (linear, P < 0.01) the content of butyrate in the cecum; and the content of acetic acid showed a linear increasing trend (P = 0.053) with increasing concentration of XOS in the diets. Supplementation with XOS increased (quadratic, P < 0.05) the content of 1,25(OH)2D3 in plasma. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in the content of CT and PTH among dietary treatments. Furthermore, dietary XOS increased contents of IgA (linear, P < 0.05), TNF-α (linear, P < 0.05), IgM (linear, P < 0.05; quadratic, P < 0.05), and IL-2 (quadratic, P < 0.05). Taken together, it was suggested that supplemental XOS can enhance the intestinal health and immune function of laying hens by positively influencing the intestinal characteristics, gut microbiota, cecal short-chain fatty acids, and immune parameters.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of yeast cell walls (YCW) on the growth performance, visceral lesions, intestinal integrity, enterotoxicity, and bacteria of broilers challenged with aflatoxin B1 (AF) and necrotic enteritis (NE) from 1 to 21 d of age. A total of 576 one-day-old broilers were assigned to a 2 × 2 × 2 design for diets containing AFB1 (0 or 40 μg/kg), NE (challenged or unchallenged), or YCW (0 or 500 mg/kg). The main effect analysis showed that AF depressed (P < 0.01) average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily body weight gain (ADG), the mRNA profiles of polymeric Ig receptor (pIgR), claudin-1, and occludin, but increased (P < 0.001) liver lesion scores, serum endotoxin, and diamine oxidase (DAO). The NE challenge depressed (P < 0.01) ADFI, ADG, secretory IgA (sIgA), pIgR, claudin-1, occludin, and the populations of Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria, but increased (P < 0.001) visceral lesions, endotoxins, and DAO. The main effect of YCW on growth performance, visceral lesions, and intestinal integrity was not significant, but decreased (P < 0.01) mortality, endotoxin, DAO, and C. perfringens, and increased (P < 0.05) the populations of Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria. There were 3-way interactions (P < 0.05) on growth performance, intestinal lesions, integrity, and gut bacteria. Compared with the treatment with the dual challenges, there were pronounced effects (P < 0.05) of YCW on ADFI, ADG, lesions, DAO, pIgR, and Bifidobacteria. The results suggest that with the concurrent challenges of AF and NE, the YCW can partially protect the growth performance and intestinal health of broilers.

Abstract
The sternum as an important part of the skeleton and not only provides a crucial attachment site for the pectoral muscles and protects internal organs such as the heart and lungs for meat duck, but may also be considered as the primary ventilator in the avian respiratory system. Therefore, this study focuses on the sternum growth and mineralization kinetics of ducks from 35 d to 63 d of age. A total of 72 one-d-old males and 72 females were chosen and fed with the same diet until the age of 9 weeks. The sternum and serum were harvested at 35 d, 42 d, 49 d, 56d, and 63 d of feeding. Results showed that the sternum width rapidly grew from 35 d to 42 d and the value changed little after 42 d, while the keel length and the sternum depth did not significantly change until 49 d age. The sternum defatted weight and density increased assumed to "S" with ducks' age and their plateau in the 56 d. The sternum ash content, calcium (Ca), and phosphate (P) levels increased with duck age, then all three reached a plateau in 49 days. Similarly, serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was higher in the ducks at both 35 and 42 days, followed by 49 days, and the value was lowered to a minimum on both days 56 and 63. Conversely, serum tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) activity substantially increased until 49 days irrespective of duck gender. Results indicate that the dimensions of the sternum were already at the maximum in 49-day-old ducks and the sternum of the ducks rapidly mineralized from 42 d to 49 d of age and achieved a plateau phase after 49-days resulting from the high activity of ALP at the sternum early mineralization.

Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and the glutathione (GSH) pathway are protective against aflatoxin, but information on the effect of LAB on aflatoxin metabolism and GSH activity in farm animals is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the effects of LAB and aflatoxin B (AFB) on growth performance, aflatoxin metabolism, and GSH pathway activity using 480 male Arbor Acres broiler chickens from d 1 to 35 of age. Diets were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial design, including AFB at 0 or 40 µg/kg of feed and LAB at 0 or 3 × 10 cfu/kg of feed, and the LAB was a mixture of equal amounts of , , and . The results showed that there were highly significant ( < 0.01) effects of AFB toxicity, LAB protection, and their interaction on ADFI, ADG, and G:F of broilers during d 1 to 35. Compared with the AFB diet, the LAB diet reduced ( < 0.05) the residues of AFB in the liver, kidney, serum, ileal digesta, and excreta on d 14 by 121.5, 80.6, 43.7, 47.0, and 26.5%, respectively, and on d 35 by 40.6, 60.2, 131.7, 37.9, and 32.9%, respectively, whereas the LAB diet increased ( < 0.05) the contents of aflatoxin M, a metabolite of AFB, in the liver, kidney, serum, and ileal digesta on d 14 by 98.2, 154.2, 168.6, 19.1, and 34.1%, respectively, and in the kidney and serum on d 35 by 32.6 and 142.2%, respectively. For the activity of the GSH pathway in the liver and duodenal mucosa, there were significant ( ≤ 0.01) effects of LAB and AFB on reduced GSH, glutathione S-transferases (GST), and glutathione reductase (GR) on d 14 and 35; compared with the control diet, the LAB diet increased ( < 0.05) GSH, GST, and GR by a range of 11.6 to 86.1%, and compared with the AFB diet, the LAB diet increased ( < 0.05) GSH, GST, and GR by a range of 24.1 to 146.9%. In the liver, there were interactions ( < 0.05) on GSH and GST on d 14 and on GSH on d 35; in the mucosa, interactions were significant ( ≤ 0.01) on GSH and GR on d 14 and on GST on d 35. It can be concluded that LAB is effective in the detoxification of AFB by modulating toxin metabolism and activating the GSH pathway in animals.

Abstract
This study was to investigate the deposition and elimination of glucosinolate metabolites including 5-vinyl-1,3-oxazolidine-2-thione (5-VOT) and thiocyanate ion (SCN-) derived from rapeseed meal (RSM) in hen eggs. During 12 weeks accumulation phase, the serum triiodothyronine, thyronine, blood urea nitrogen, kidney index, and thyroid index linearly increased with the RSM at week 12 (P < 0.05). The thyroid histopathology revealed a sign of hyperplastic goiter in hens fed with 17.64-29.40% RSM. The 5-VOT content of eggs (Y, ng/g) was correlated with 5-VOT intake (X2, μg/d·bird) and 5-VOT feeding time (X1, week): Y = 54.94X1 + 0.51X2 - 430.34 (P < 0.01, R2 = 0.80). The SCN- content of eggs (Y, mg/kg) was correlated with RSM intake (X2, μg/d·bird) and RSM feeding time (X1, week): Y = 0.095X1 + 0.302X2 - 0.4211 (P < 0.01, R2 = 0.70). After a 4-week withdrawal of RSM, the 5-VOT and SCN- did not show in eggs. Taken together, 5.88% RSM with dietary supplements of 23.55 mg/kg 5-VOT and 10.76 mg/kg SCN- had no effects on hens with regard to serum parameters, organ index, and thyroid histopathology, and more than 4 weeks withdrawal should be considered for human and hen health.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the tibial baseplate coverage with symmnetrical tibial prosthesis in primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Methods: From August 2014 to February 2015, 39 patients (39 knees) with varus knee osteoarthritis were retrospective reviewed in Department of Orthopaedics, Tianjin Xiqing Hospital. Nine males and 30 females; aged 50 to 78 years (67±6 year). 3D tibia models of the knee were built with Mimics 10.01 software, simulated TKA surgeries were performed. The morphology of the proximal tibia was measured, including the mediolateral (ML), anteroposterior (AP) and medial and lateral tibial plateau AP dimensions. 3D models of PFC Sigma tibial prosthesis were imported and the tibial coverage characters were analyzed. Results: The AP and ML dimensions of the tibial resection surface were (45.7± 3.4) mm, (71.7± 4.2) mm respectively, the plateau aspect ration ratio (AP/ML) was 63.8%±3.0%. The medial tibial plateau AP[(46.9± 3.3) mm]was significantly greater than the lateral side[(41.8±3.3) mm, P=0.000], the asymmetric ratio averaged 112.4%±6.9%. The medial tibial plateau, anteromedial, posteromedial, posterolateral unsatisfied coverage ratio were 33.3%, 76.9%, 20.5%, 33.3% respectively. There are 5 cases underhang and 3 cases overhang in the posteromedial side, whereas 1 case underhang and 12 cases overhang posterolateral, the overhang ratio was 30.8%. Posteromedial, posterolateral prosthesis coverage had linear positive correlation to the ipsilateral tibial plateau AP diameter. Conclusions: The medial AP diameter of tibial plateau is significantly lager than the lateral side in varus knee osteoarthritis patients. With symmetrical tibial baseplate placement in TKA, the prosthesis usually lead to medial tibial plateau anterior and posterior underhang and posterolateral overhang.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the clinical features and surgical treatment effect of patients with cardiac cavernous hemangioma. Methods: Clinical data of 9 patients (5 male, aged from 4 to 53 years old) with cardiac cavernous hemangioma, who underwent surgical treatment from November 2002 to March 2015 and the diagnosis of cardiac cavernous hemangioma was confirmed by postoperative histological examination, were retrospectively analyzed. Effects of surgical treatment were analyzed. Results: Four patients were asymptomatic (heart murmur presented in 3 patients during physical examination). Three patients presented with palpitation, chest distress, and short of breath. One patient presented with epigastric discomfort and another patient presented with intermittent fever for more than 10 months. ST and T wave changes of electrocardiogram were found in 2 patients, cardiac mass was detected in the right heart chamber in 5 patients by echocardiography, and no cardiac mass was detected the rest 4 patients. Cardiac masses were resected en bloc, then the adjacent tissues were repaired in 7 patients, and mass was partially resected due to the involvement with adjacent heart structure. No cardiac mass was found during operation in 1 case, impaired mitral valve structure was excised and postoperative pathologically confirmed as cardiac valve cavernous angioma on the excised mitral valve structure. No signs of recurrence or enlargement of cardiac cavernous hemangioma were found during the 11(10, 11)years follow up. Conclusions: There is no specific clinical feature for patients with cardiac cavernous hemangioma. It is difficult to detect the cardiac valve cavernous angioma by echocardiography before surgery. Individualized surgical treatment is associated with good clinical outcome in this patient cohort. However, the clinical features and surgical treatment effect of patients with cardiac cavernous hemangioma still need to investigate in large sample trial.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effect of irradiation to anastomosis from preoperative radiotherapy for patients with rectal cancer by studying the pathological changes. Methods: In this retrospective study, patients enrolled in the FOWARC study from January 2011 to July 2014 in the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University were included. In the FOWARC study, enrolled patients with local advanced rectal cancer were randomly assigned to receive either neoadjuvant chemo-radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Among these patients, 23 patients were selected as radiation proctitis (RP)group, who fulfilled these conditions: (1) received neoadjuvant chemo-radiotherapy followed by sphincter-preserving surgery; (2) developed radiation proctitis as confirmed by preoperative imaging diagnosis; (3) had intact clinical samples of surgical margins. Twenty-three patients who had received neoadjuvant chemo-radiotherapy but without development of radiation proctitis were selected as non-radiation proctitis (nRP) group. Meanwhile, 23 patients received neoadjuvant chemotherapy only were selected as neoadjuvant chemotherapy (CT) group. Both nRP and CT cases were selected by ensuring the basic characteristics such as sex, age, tumor site, lengths of proximal margin and distal margin all maximally matched to the RP group. Both proximal and distal margins were collected for further analysis for all selected cases. Microscopy slices were prepared for hematoxylin & eosin staining and Masson staining to show general pathological changes, and also for immunohistochemistry with anti-CD-34 as primary antibody to reveal the microvessel. Microvessel counting in submucosal layer and proportion of macrovessel with stenosis were used to evaluate the blood supply of the proximal and distal end of anastomosis. A modified semi-quantitative grading approach was used to evaluate the severity of radiation-induced injury. Either ANOVA analysis, Kruskal-Wallis rank-sum test or χ(2) test was used for comparison among three groups, and Mann-Whitney U test was used for comparison between two groups. Results: Compared to group of neoadjuvant chemotherapy only, patients receiving neoadjuvant chemo-radiotherapy had lower microvessel count in both proximal and distal margins (M(Q(R)): proximal, 25.5 (19.6) vs. 50.0 (25.0), Z=3.915, P=0.000; distal, 20.5 (17.5) vs. 49.0 (28.0), Z=3.558, P=0.000), higher proportions of macrovessel with stenosis (proximal, 9.5% (23.8%) vs. 0, Z=3.993, P=0.000; distal, 11.5%(37.3%) vs. 0 (2.0%), Z=2.893, P=0.004), higher histopathologic score (proximal, 4.0 (2.0) vs. 1.0 (2.0), Z=6.123, P=0.000; distal, 5.0 (3.0) vs. 2.0 (1.0), Z=4.849, P=0.000). In patients receiving neoadjuvant chemo-radiotherapy, compared to nRP group, RP group had lower microvessel count in both proximal and distal margins (proximal, 19.0 (23.0) vs. 30.4 (38.0), Z=2.845, P=0.004; distal, 19.0 (13.0) vs. 30.0(29.1), Z=2.022, P=0.043), higher proportions of macrovessel with stenosis (proximal, 23.0% (40.0%) vs. 0(11.0%), Z=3.248, P=0.001; distal, 27.0% (45.0%) vs. 3.0% (19.0%), Z=2.164, P=0.030). Rate of anastomotic leakage for CT, nRP and RP group were 8.7% (2/23), 30.4% (7/23), and 52.2% (12/23), and the differences among three groups were statistically significant (χ(2)=10.268, P=0.007). Conclusion: Radiation-induced injury existed on both margins of the resected rectal site after preoperative radiotherapy, and those diagnosed as radiation proctitis had more severe microvascular injury.

Abstract
We have designed and fabricated high-performance single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) by using 0.18-µm high-voltage CMOS technology. Without any technology customization, the SPADs have low dark-count rate, high photon-detection probability, low afterpulsing probability, and acceptable timing jitter and breakdown voltage. Our design provides a low-cost and high-performance SPAD for various applications.

Abstract
This experiment examined the egg quality of hens fed vanadium (V) and vitamin C (VC) during storage, as well as the V and VC withdrawal on egg quality and V residual in egg. A total of 360 laying hens (31 weeks old) were randomly allotted into a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement treatments (6 replicates and 10 chicks per replicate) with three levels of dietary V (0, 5, and 10 mg/kg) and two levels of VC (0 and 100 mg/kg) for 19 weeks (feeding V and VC 12 weeks, recovery 7 weeks). The V residual in eggs at 4, 8, and 12th weeks were increased (linear effect, P ≤ 0.01) as V levels increased and was not detected in albumen at 7th week after V withdrawal. Followed by 12-week feeding period, albumen height and Haugh unit of eggs during 2-week storage were decreased (linear and quadratic effect, P < 0.01) by dietary V supplementation. Lightness value was increased (linear effect, P < 0.01), whereas redness and yellowness value of the eggshell were lowered (linear effect, P < 0.01) in V-containing diet. During 7-week withdrawal period, eggs from groups pre-feeding 5 and 10 mg/kg V had lower (linear effect, P < 0.01) overall albumen height and Haugh unit. The reducing effect on albumen height and HU continued to be observed until the seventh week, whereas the bleaching effect on eggshell color disappeared after 1-week withdrawal. The results indicated that feeding 5 or 10 mg/kg V increases egg V residual and reduces egg albumen quality and bleached the shell color, and the impaired albumen quality induced by 10 mg/kg of V lasted at least 6 weeks after changing to no V supplementation diet. The addition of VC did not show to affect egg quality during storage or recovery phase.

Abstract
Objective: To identify human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DRB1, DQA1 and DQB1 susceptible alleles and genotypes in latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) patients of Chinese Han nationality. Methods: All subjects including 652 LADA patients and 1 181 healthy controls from 1999 to 2015 in Han nationality region of Hunan province were genotyped with high resolution at HLA-DRB1, DQA1 and DQB1 locus by PCR-sequence based typing (PCR-SBT). Frequencies of genotypes between patients and controls were compared by chi square test. Results: The DQA1 susceptible allele was DQA1*03 (OR=1.23, P(c)=0.028); the DQB1 susceptible alleles were DQB1*0201 (OR=2.24, P(c)<0.001), DQB1*0303 (OR=1.30, P(c)=0.030), DQB1*0304 (OR=10.23, P(c)=0.004) and DQB1*0401(OR=1.94, P(c)<0.001); and the DRB1 susceptible alleles were DRB1*0301 (OR=2.10, P(c)<0.001), DRB1*0405(OR=1.89, P(c)<0.001) and DRB1*0901(OR=1.36, P(c)=0.008), respectively in Chinese Han nationality LADA patients. The HLA-Ⅱ susceptible genotypes were DQA1*03/05 (OR=1.81, P(c)=0.007), DQB1*0201/0201(OR=5.74, P(c)<0.001), DQB1*0201/0303 (OR=2.58, P(c)=0.010), DRB1*0301/0901(OR=3.43, P(c)=0.028) and DRB1*0901/0901 (OR=1.82, P(c)=0.021), respectively in LADA patients. DQB1*0201 and DRB1*0301 were shared susceptible alleles for Chinese Han and Caucasian LADA patients, while DQA1*03, DQB1*0303, DQB1*0304, DQB1*0401, DRB1*0405 and DRB1*0901 were specific susceptible alleles for Chinese Han LADA patients. Interestingly, the DQB1*0303 allele was susceptible in Chinese while protective in Caucasian (OR: 1.30 vs 0.29). Conclusion: Susceptible alleles are DQA1*03, DQB1*0201, DQB1*0303, DQB1*0304, DQB1*0401, DRB1*0301, DRB1*0405 and DRB1*0901, and susceptible genotypes are DQA1*03/05, DQB1*0201/0201, DQB1*0201/0303, DRB1*0301/0901 and DRB1*0901/0901 in Chinese LADA patients.

Abstract
Based on high throughput sequencing and PCR detection technology, this study has found out that intestinal microbial diversity was impaired and the quantities of two main bacteria flora (Bacteroidetes and Clostridium) were significantly reduced in patients with diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (D-IBS). Meanwhile mucosal expression of toll-like receptor (TLR) 2 and TLR4 were significantly enhanced, which was inversely correlated with the reduction of Bacteroidetes and Clostridium. Thus, it suggests that D-IBS may be associated with TLR signal transduction triggered by the intestinal dysbacteriosis.

Abstract
Vanadium (V) is a trace element which can induce dysfunction of gastro-intestine and egg quality deterioration of laying hens. This study was conducted to determine the effect of tea polyphenols (TP) on intestinal morphology, microflora, and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) profile of laying hens fed vanadium containing diets. A total of 120 Lohman laying hens (67-week-old) were randomly divided into 4 groups with 6 replicates and 5 birds each for a 35-day feeding trial. The dietary treatments were as follows: (1) control (CON), fed a basal diet; (2) vanadium treatment (V10), CON +10 mg V/kg; (3) TP treatment 1 (TP1): V10 + 600 mg TP/kg; (4) TP treatment 2 (TP2): V10 + 1000 mg TP/kg. Fed 10 mg V/kg diets to laying hens did not affect the cecum flora diversity index (H), degree of homogeneity (EH), and richness (S), but hens fed TP2 diet decreased the H, EH, and S (P < 0.05). The cecum butyrate acid concentration was lower in V10 treatment and higher in TP2 treatment (P < 0.05). Addition of 10 mg/kg V resulted in an increased (P < 0.01) duodenal cell apoptosis rate, and 1000 mg/kg TP supplementation overcame (P < 0.01) this reduction effect induced by vanadium. The results indicated that supplementation of 10 mg/kg vanadium increased duodenal cell apoptosis and reduced cecum butyrate acid content. Addition of 1000 mg/kg TP increased the SCFA production to affect cecum flora ecology and protected the duodenal cell from excess apoptosis caused by vanadium.
